Sunday Report

Today was the Fifth Sunday after Sunday in the Endless Green Season.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Dread of the Future

You have a disagreeable duty to do at twelve oclock?  Do not blacken nine and ten and all between with the color of twelve. Do the work of each, and reap your reward in peace. So when the dreaded moment in the future becomes the present you shall meet it walking in the light, and that light shall overcome its darkness.

George MacDonald

A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

Proverbs 11:1

Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

 St. Mark 10:18

In my Fathers house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

St. John 14:2-3

He that is blessed with a good wife is as happy as if he were [a ruler] upon a throne. A bad wife is no better than an incurable disease, besides that she makes [her husband] ashamed.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 195-196, with the Collect first:

G

The Collect.

RANT, O Lord, we beseech thee, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by thy governance, that thy Church may joyfully serve thee in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle came from the Third Chapter of the First Epistle of Saint Peter beginning at the Eighth Verse. Peter tells to be of one mind, have compassion and pity for each other, to be courteous, to give good to all our brethren, to return good for evil, to seek peace, to do good, not just talk good.  Peter tells us to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk.  To put ourselves in othersplaces, understand when they fall short and make good things happen.

B

E ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? But and if ye suffer for righteousnesssake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts.

Today’s Holy Gospel started in the Fifth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Luke beginning at the First Verse. This is one of the classic stories of Jesus in the Bible.  Jesus had gone down to Lake Gennesaret to pray and then speak to the people.  As they pressed in on him, he asked Simon Peter to use his boat as a speaking platform.  Speaking from a small boat near the beach is almost like speaking in an amphitheatre.  When he finished talking to the people, he told Simon Peter to go out and set his nets.  Simon pointed out they had fished all night with no result, but at His word, he would set his net.  The net gathered an incredible catch that Simon Peter and his friends could not board.  At that point, it was clear to Simon Peter he was in the presence of one far greater than himself.  He fell to his knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”  Then Jesus said, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.”  From then on Simon Peter followed Jesus.

Do not misunderstand, every day Jesus speaks to you telling you what to do.  It is your choice, you can listen like Simon Peter, or you can ignore Jesus.  He has the pony for the lottery.  He wants to give it to you, all you have to do is accept.  While He is a bit more subtle than a Drill Instructor, the question is the same, Can you hear me?

There are none so deaf as those who will not hear.

I

T came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, and saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simons, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: and so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

St. Luke 5:1-11

A

nd it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. 4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. 6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: 10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. 11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

     Jesus is once again by the shores of Galilee (Gennesaret). As usual, people of all stripes are pressing around Him, either for the sake of healing and hearing, or for a glimpse at a popular figure. Many today are no different from this latter crowd. They enjoy the popularity of Christ and being calledChristian.  Have you ever asked yourself what it is about Christ that most appeals to your own heart? Is it itching ears you have to hear a sensational new word, or is it the Word of Truth that you truly seek?

     We observe in todays Gospel text the third call of Peter, James, Andrew and John - this time to Apostleship. There were two previous calls of increasing import -John 1:35-42 & Matt 4:18-22. This third is the chief call. It is much like our level of ministry in Holy Orders.

      2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their netsThe ships of fishermen usually dock in the morning after a long and weary night of fishing. Night is the best time to fish for fish, and it is the best time to fish for men. Those who walk in darkness have great need of Light, and this Light we present to them so that The people who sat in darkness have seen a great Lightand that Light is Christ!  Fish are easily caught at night due to the dangers of limited vision. Those who walk in darkness as well fall prey to the snares of the devil.

     The two ships are notable.  The one into which Jesus steps are much like the Jewish nation to which He came first. The second is like unto the Gentile nations. In the end, both who follow Him are filled to capacity with great blessing.

     3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

     The multitudes are great and press closely on Christ. He can hardly move an elbow for the press. He enters Simons ship and asked him to cast out some short distance from the shore. This vantage point will separate Him from the crowd and its worldly concerns of His popular appeal. They represent the world, and He sits apart from the world and preaches to those who stand in it. It is often necessary for a minister to separate himself from the petty politics of the parish and get a deep-seated stand on the Word of God that he may preach with power and conviction, unmoved by public opinion.

     Jesus, unlike many modern Jumping Jacks of the Pulpit”, often sat down to preach and teach. He spoke in even and calm accents. He sat as one having authority and not needing to scream to awaken heaven and hell to His Person.

     Jesus now gives a command that would seem ridiculous to a seasoned fisherman of little or no faith: 4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. It might seem at first strange that so common a teacher as Jesus could command the immediate obedience of rough men of the sea, but Jesus was no common teacher, and His disciples would be, no more, rough men of the sea. Christ, through the disciplesknowledge of Him gleaned from past observation, commanded respect, obedience, and action.  He has full authority over the lives of those who consider themselves His disciples that includes you and me.

     The bright morning sun would preclude a reasonable possibility of catching fish; yet, these fishermen knew that whatever Christ commanded was reasonable even if a miracle were required to bring about the result.

     Of course, obedience to Christ will always result in munificent reward.

     Do not simply launch out”, but also let down your nets,and not simplylet down your nets”, but let them down for a draught of fish! Even if Gods commands may seem unreasonable to us, we obey to the letter and wait for the miracle.

     We might prefer to fish for bait fish along the near shore, but Christ commands us to launch out far into the deep that is where the large catches are made Africa, India, Asia, America, the darkly lit streets of New York!

     So what response do we expect from a faithful disciple?

     5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. The labors of the hands of men profit nothing apart from the hand of the Lord working in, and through, him. Working all the long night will avail no riches in heaven unless it is in obedience to Gods Word.

     Even though the disciple has labored all night, at the opportune time for fishing, and achieved nothing at all, yet, the Lords commands are not empty of meaning. Peter acknowledges that he has failed in his own strength to catch any fish, but, at Thy WordPeter will let down the net. We can fish for men all we like under our own power, but we will change no hearts, nor save any souls. It is the Holy Ghost working in the hearts to draw them to the NET that counts.

     6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. Even when we begin with faith, we are overcome in amazement at the surprising power of God to bring victory from hopelessness.  It is unlikely that these men had ever caught so many fish that their nets began to break, but at the most inopportune time of day for fishing, this is the very thing that happened. Obedience to God ALWAYS pays dividends.

     The laborer may look at his pitiful seven loaves of bread and wonder how can this ever provide sufficiency to feed a family, or a household with guests, but he then remembers the One who fed on one occasion four thousand, and on another, seven thousand, with such little provision of bread. That increase, which God gives, though seemingly small, will always be sufficient to meet the needs.

      7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. Instead of constantly struggling for the greatest mansion of a building, or for pride and prestige, the churches should be working for the greater need – the salvation of souls and propagation of the Gospel. Instead of playing petty politics with sex and sin, they should be manning the rescue boats for the saving of souls.  And they must labor together and not at odds with each other or the Word of God in doing so. The number of boats will never be sufficient to land the haul of souls caught in the net of the Gospel if we are obedient to God.

      8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken

     Are you astonished at the work of Christ in your own life and that of others? If not, perhaps you need to be more diligent in prayer and study.  Do you believe that Simon Peter really desired Christ to depart from him? Not at all! He could not suppress his humility and gratitude that such a Majestic Lord would bend ear to him. Though Peter had come to expect the unexpected, he was nevertheless surprised at the Grace and Power of God evidenced by Jesus.

     We note, first, the awakening of conscience in Peter. When he observed the righteousness and glory of Christ in comparison to his own poverty stricken soul, he was ashamed of his own sins. Have you been?

     Following the awareness of our sins comes the cry of fear and contrition! How can Christ receive poor Peter in view of his past sins? How can Christ receive you and me in view of our past sins? But He does!

     10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. If Christ abides with you, FEAR NOT! Yes, you have been heavy laden with sins, but He will remove that unbecoming yoke from your shoulders and place His own yoke upon you that does not bear down, but rather lifts up. Your earthly nets may break with sin, but Christ will make you fishers of men and that NET will never give out for abundance. In the two previous Gospel accounts of fishing, Christ had told them that He would make them fishers of men. Now, they are told that they SHALL catch men.

     11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him. The disciples had abandoned all to follow Christ on previous occasions: And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. (Matt 4:20) And following the Crucifixion, they did so again: Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. (John 21:3) Following this event when Christ again commanded them to drop their nets, Peter and the others never returned to their secular professions. They left the life of fishers of sea creatures, and took up the full mantle of fishers of men according to Christs command to them and to us! Are you?

Sermon Reverend Jack Arnold - Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion - Descanso, California

Todays sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

Consider these words from the Collect:

the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by thy governance, that thy Church may joyfully serve thee in all godly quietness

In the Collect, we ask the events of this world might follow Gods governance or will.  Why?  Because in those places where it does, we find happiness and joy.  And good things will happen when we do follow Gods will. The collect is expressing that not just we Christians should attempt follow Gods governance but that also of the whole wide world. Think about it, if the world would do what God ask, think of how much better it would be. It is that simple, it means more, reflect on that.  After all, amazing is it not?  Since the Garden, it has always been one of the two same choices:

  1. We follow God’s Will for us, we do what is good for us, individually and as a people or a country.  It is hard work, but easier than we imagined; we prosper when all goes well.  It was all our doing, we are happy because we were so smart.

  1. We ignore God’s instructions, doing what we want to do, not what we are supposed to do.  It turns out to be way harder than we thought possible, in the end everything turns to weasel spit.  It was not our fault, it was God’s fault, He is punishing us.

As long as we are human, imperfect creatures with free will, it will never change for humanity.  But, we individually can change, and with enough individuals changing, humanity will change. The key is an individual changing. A snowball of these individuals changing can eventually in time cause an avalanche of individuals changing.  Of course, as we all know this is not an easy task to accomplish. To accomplish it, we must give up our base desires and wants and look to what God wants for us to do in this world.  We must focus on an aspect we need to change and work on changing that, day by day, year by year. It is a constant process we will undergo throughout the rest of our days on Earth.

We can learn from the past and live for the future in Him who gave His Life we might be free eternally. This is a very similar theme to last Sundays sermon, with very good reason. It applies to almost every single lesson in the Bible, which is to do Gods will, above what you want to do. Every time we do what we want to do instead of what God wants us to do, we fail. But when we do what God wants us to do, we succeed! Even though we want to do what we do, rather than what God wants us to do, it is better for us in the end to do what God wants us to do.  Doing what God Asks = Happiness, Not doing what God Asks = Unhappiness, to put it into mathematical terms!

So, how do we make our little part of this world follow Gods will? Peter tells to be of one mind, have compassion and pity for each other, to be courteous, to give good to all our brethren, to return good for evil, to seek peace, to do good, not just talk good.   He is saying that we need to BE good and it needs to show in our actions. We need to put away our evil thoughts and words and replace them with words of kindness and healing.

Peter tells us to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. When Peter speaks of being of one mind, he is speaking of the one mind we will have when we follow the instructions of the Holy Ghost. He is saying we need to have one mindedness with Christ, to act as Christ would act. This is a hard concept to put into action in our lives. We are always having to work on overcoming our natural sinful tendencies and letting the Holy Ghost into our hearts to transform us into Children of God. That means putting away our old selfish minds and putting on the new one mind of Christ. The Holy Ghost will help us to have this one mind.

We have to start first with ourselves and allow the Holy Ghost into our hearts to transform us. After we are transformed by the Holy Ghost, only then can we truly be able to help others. Then we can truly act with the one mind Peter speaks about. It will not happen right away, but it is a steady and continuous process, in fact taking most of our lifetime here on earth. But while we are being transformed, we can do our best to help others. But we must realize that it is only through God we can help others, and not to us only. To put ourselves in othersplaces, understand when they fall short and make good things happen. The key word is walk”, to act upon the teachings of Christ, and not just utter them and not do them. All of us, including myself, struggle with this; but as long as we are DOING our best, and not just saying it, then that is all He asks of us.  We cannot do more than our best. We must be doing our best and not just faking doing our best. There is a significant difference between the two. If you are sincere, people will know it. If you are not sincere, people will also know it too. As they say, actions speak louder than words. And to paraphrase Scripture, where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. To understand where a persons heart is, look at their actions and not just their words. Words do not mean much unless they are backed up by actions. We need to perform good actions, with the help of the Holy Ghost, to show that we truly believe.

So, just how do we make good things happen?  Fairly simple, do what God asks! Follow the Summary of the Law and all shall be well in ones life. Every moral law hangs off of the Summary of the Law Love your God with all your heart soul and your mind, and Love thy Neighbor as thyself.” These two commandments are all where the Ten Commandments originate and thus from which all the moral laws of the universe originate. They are the ultimate benchmark for us, which we should try and do our best to meet. They are truly what we should be judging our own actions against. This is an extremely common theme again! Doing what God asks is the answer to all of our problems if you think about it! Dont figure out ways to seem to do what He asks, while doing what you want.  Dont be a Pharisee! Consider when Jesus told Simon Peter to go out and set his nets.  Simon was tired, he was hungry, he had fished all night with no result.  After making excuses, he decided to do what he was told! There is a lesson there, instead of making excuses why things are the way they are, why not be quiet and do Gods will instead? It will have a lot better results that is for sure, like Simon Peter and his nets!  The net gathered an incredible catch Simon Peter and his friends could not board.

That is what happened to Simon Peter; that is what will happen to you, if you will but listen. Listening and then acting are the key principles of this Gospel, we must listen to what He says, and then ACT upon it.

Do not misunderstand, every day Jesus speaks to you, telling you what to do.  It is your choice, you can listen like Simon Peter or you can ignore Jesus.  He has the pony for the lottery.  He wants to give it to you, all you have to do is accept.  While He is a bit more subtle than a Drill Instructor, the question is the same, Can you hear me? The problem with us is that we just do not want to hear. That is why we need the Holy Ghost to open up our ears, that we might hear and obey.

There are none so deaf as those who will not hear.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Psalms 62 & 63

Ecclesiastes 2:1-11, 18-23 • Matthew 19:16-30

The Fifth Sunday after Trinity.

G

The Collect.

RANT, O Lord, we beseech thee, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by thy governance, that thy Church may joyfully serve thee in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Psalm 62

T

ruly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.

He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.

3 How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence.

4 They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.

5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defense; I shall not be moved.

7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

18: WAITING

Faced with intense opposition, David claims God is his rock, salvation and defence. He instructs his soul to wait for God. He encourages others to trust in Him and pour out their hearts before God who is their refuge. As David encourages us to trust in Him we should also reach others with the same good news. Waiting upon the Lord can at times be very frustrating, but by far it is the best recourse to some of the worst times we face from time to time.

9 Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

9: WEIGHING

God knows the true weight of ungodly men. They are lighter than vapour and have no righteousness that registers on the scales. Want to test this concept, try to keep ALL the commandments. No man can.

10 Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

10: WORLDLINESS

Not only oppression and robbery must be rejected, but so must worldly and materialistic dependence upon increased riches. They can never meet man’s spiritual needs.

11 God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.

12 Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work.

1112: WORD

Mercy, power, and justice are in Davids mind after God has spoken to him. Gods word is crucially important. Notice the idea, God spoke it once, twice, if not more than Gods word is crucially important. Notice the idea, God spoke it once, twice, if not more than that David heard the crucial message: that power belongs to God. And equally important, mercy belongs to the Lord. And that mercy is rendered or given to every man according to his work. The needs of each is met by the outpouring of mercy, each in their own line of work.

Psalm 63

O

 God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

1: LONGING DAVID

Everything about David underlines the fact that He longs to be with God. He is like a thirsty man in a parched wilderness looking for water. David knows the fact that there is no blessing outside of the realm of the Lord. He knows that only in the sanctuary of the Lord will he find his spiritual thirst slaked. The very loving-kindness from the Lord is far more to be desired than life itself. Interesting point David makes. Then to make us understand the significance of it, he writes of his soul being satisfied and that in that satisfaction he offers praise to the Lord.

2 To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.

3 Because thy loving-kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.

4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.

5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:

25: LOVING DEVOTION

Davids response of prayer and joyful praise are because he knows that the loving-kindness of the Lord satisfies and is better than life.

6 When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.

7 Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.

8 My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.

68: LYING DOWN

Even when he is lying on his bed at night, David will remember and meditate on God. Upheld by Him, he wants to follow Him closely.

9 But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.

10 They shall fall by the sword: they shall be a portion for foxes.

910: LIVES DESTROYED

David knows that those who seek to destroy his life will, one day, reap destruction in their own lives. As we have studied before, vengeance is mine saith the Lord’. It is in Gods time, not ours, that the wicked will get their reward.

11 But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

11: LIARSDESTINY

Those who speak lies will one day be stopped, while those rejoicing in God will continue to praise and glorify Him. David knows that this eternal pleasure awaits him, too.

In our daily walk with the Lord let us ever be mindful of the great responsibility we have to praise God. We are to worship Him in beauty and holiness. Let us seek to praise God this week in all that we do and say, at work, at home, in the market, where ever we are, let us praise God from whom all blessings flow. Amen.

Let us Pray:

GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that the words which we have heard this day with our outward ears, may, through thy grace, be so grafted inwardly in our hearts, that they may bring forth in us the fruit of good living, to the honour and praise of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, who art always more ready to hear than we to pray, and art wont to give more than either we desire or deserve; Pour down upon us the abundance of Thy mercy; forgiving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord. Amen. DIRECT us, O Lord, in all our doings, with thy most gracious favour, and further us with thy continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy Name, and finally, by thy mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ALMIGHTY God, the fountain of all wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask, and our ignorance in asking; We beseech thee to have compassion upon our infirmities; and those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, vouchsafe to give us, for the worthiness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Fifth Sunday after Trinity

In todays Epistle Peter admonished his readers to, Be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contraiwise blessing... As regenerated believers in Jesus Christ, you are aware of our daily battle with the devil and his minions. They may attack us from any direction and they have the power to assume any number of forms. That is why we must be on our guard, because the devil can use even ourselves against ourselves.

Think for a moment concerning that last statement. My grandmother used to say that, We are our own worst enemies. When I first heard her say that, it did not dawn on me just how true that saying was. Later in life, I came to understand what she meant. In our Constitution, we have the Fifth Amendment. It guarantees us the right to a grand jury hearing before being tried for a criminal offense, the right to just compensation should the government take our property, the right to due process of law and the right to be free from forced confessions that could be used as evidence against us. From that last point comes our Miranda rights which the police must read to any suspect before they question them about their alleged participation in any criminal act. And so if the suspect talks to the authorities afterwards, anything that person says can and will be used against them in court. Every American should know their Miranda rights by heart - You have a right to remain silentAnything that you say can and will be used against you in a court of law - You have a right to an attorney - If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for by the court - and - Do you understand these rights?

So then, what is the crux of the issue? To answer that question, let us pose another: What do each of us possess within ourselves that can cut, lash and skewer both friend and foe alike, as well as incriminate and condemn ourselves? The answer, as you may have guessed, is the tongue.

St. James admonished his readers that, ...the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be (St. James 3:8-10).

There is a line out of a western movie which illustrates this point. In a particular scene, one of the characters had just finished a cursed-filled diatribe to which one of the other characters responded, “You kiss your momma with that mouth?How often do we hear those around us venting their spleenswith vile and bitter language? Some do so without much thought; while for others it is a conscious act of verbal violence meant to demean and degrade.

In Psalm 32:9, we are instructed to be, ...not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle... which means that we ought to exercise self-control in all that we do. The fact that one can revile others with language that is not the least bit conducive to edifying reveals that persons level of self-restraint, or as the limbo dancers are asked, How low can you go?

Probably the most used epithets are those which contain the name of God. But to do so violates the Third Commandment which reads, Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain... (Exodus 20:7). This sin is now so much a part of our conversation that many will utter his holy name with no regard for whom they are defaming. God gave us that commandment to remind all humanity that he is the Almighty God, the LORD of hosts, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and all that in them is (Acts 4:24). We have been made in his image and after his likeness, but we are finite and he is infinite. He is pure, holy and perfect. The Bible tells us to be sincere when we call upon him, and not to do so if we are not ready to truly address ourselves to him. Ergo, to flippantly throw his name out to others as an exclamation is demeaning to his glory, and to use his holy name in an epithet is blasphemy.

Nevertheless, have you ever noticed how people are so quick to treat our heavenly Father with disrespect? Why cant they use the name of some pagan deity? I remember in an old tv series from the 1950's, one of the principal characters used the exclamatory phrase of jumping Jupiter,” or the like, to express his level of either approval or disapproval of a particular action. But in todays worldacross every field of endeavoryou will hear not only vile and vulgar language being used in ordinary conversation, but you will also hear the LORDs name as part of such profane speaking.

Let me pose another worthwhile question: How does Gods name vainly uttered aid the user? In point of fact, it does not. The wicked are notoriously shortsighted and forgetful, but God is not. On that terrible day of judgment before the Great White Throne, they will be judged for every idle word that came forth from their mouths. What agony there will be on that day. There will be no escape, no appeal, and no advocate to stand beside them in their defense. God will hold them accountable for every vile jest, every filthy word, and every blasphemous remark.

I have heard it said that the unregenerate excuse the use of their verbal barbs and wicked language with the offhand comment of, Oh theyre just words.” Really? Such persons are being disingenuous at best and lying at worst as only the grossly unintelligent would not know that taking the LORDs name in vainespecially when it has been hurled at another in a barrage of insults— is forbidden. Such people know what they intended in their use of such language, and throwing Gods name into the mix adds weight and garners attention. Such language is meant to not only shock the victim, but diminish them as well. How tragic that the name of God has become a tool to reduce another human being both mentally and emotionally. That is, after all, what cursing another was meant to do otherwise the speaker would not do it.

The apostle Paul reminded us we should, ...put off all... anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth (Colossians 3:8). Yes, the unregenerate of the world will, under the influence of evil, seek to have us lose control over ourselves releasing, as it were, those things in our minds that were once part of our old nature. Nevertheless, we must not permit it. The apostle urged us to exercise self-control that we might avoid opening the door to sin. When we vilify others in ways meant to harm them, then we are acting beyond the pale of biblical authority. God did not tell us to use bad language in our Christian witness. To rebuke, to chastize, or to admonish does not give us the right to use the devils tools in Gods service.

Now, you might say, Reverend, what can I do as a born-again Christian to overcome my past use of such words?Well, the answer is: You have to keep watch over your own self much as a soldier keeps his watch over his encampment. And being watchful means being vigilant. You cannot expect Satans minions to give you a moments peace in their campaign against you. You have to stand your watch over all your faculties for that is your godly duty. And you cannot be an effective Christian without exercising self-restraint.

If you were once given to harsh language prior to your regeneration in Christ Jesus, then you must strive all the more to rid yourself of such by learning new ways to express your feelings without resorting to vulgar comments. You should also seek Gods pardon for these and other errors. Our great and loving God has promised to forgive and to forget any sin which you bring before his throne of grace through the blood of his only begotten Son. But it is not enough to ask for forgiveness, one must then live in obedience to his will and commandment ever after. For only through a life devoted to God will you reflect your true state of liberty from the bondage of sin, more particularly, the sin of a loose and cursing tongue. Our heavenly Father loves us and wants us to live eternally with him in his kingdom. The reviler, the blasphemer, the mean-spirited curser, or the like, cannot enter therein. So, let your words be seasoned with salt and keep your tongue under control for that is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.

Let us pray,

O

 holy Father, who has not cursed us, but has blessed us with the free gift of salvation; grant that by the indwelling of the Holy Ghost, we would reject the language and customs of this world and embrace thy wholesome language which is from above; for this we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

People in our Prayers - http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack -

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
or Dru - dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Sara asks that you pray for guidance for her as she deals with the stresses of her family and life.  Pray that she can separate those things which she can affect from those things which she cannot and give her grace to accept that she cannot do everything and can only change those things within her control.  She asks for God’s help for her business so that she might remain gainfully employed while keeping up with the needs of her mother and husband and healing her own problems.

Jacquie to open her heart to God and accept His Love and Grace.

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.
