The Fourth Sunday afterEaster

Sunday Report

This is the Fourth Sunday after Easter; the Easter season is five Sundays, the last of which, the Fifth Sunday after Easter, is commonly called Rogation Sunday.  Like every day, today we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, “Christ the Lord IS Risen today!”  By the way, it is also the first anniversary of the AOC Sunday Report!

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

The Purpose of the Church

This is the whole of Christianity. There is nothing else. It is so easy to get muddled about that. It is easy to think that the Church has a lot of different objects—education, building, missions, holding services. Just as it is easy to think the State has a lot of different objects—military, political, economic, and what not. But in a way things are much simpler than that. The State exists simply to promote and to protect the ordinary happiness of human beings in this life. A husband and wife chatting over a fire, a couple of friends having a game of darts in a pub, a man reading a book in his own room or digging in his own garden— that is what the State is there for. And unless they are helping to increase and prolong and protect such moments, all the laws, parliaments, armies, courts, police, economics, etc., are simply a waste of time. In the same way the Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became Man for no other purpose. It is even doubtful, you know, whether the whole universe was created for any other purpose.

On Kindness

Love is something more stern and splendid than mere kindness. For about a hundred years we have so concentrated on one of the virtues—“kindness” or mercy—that most of us do not feel anything except kindness to be really good or anything but cruelty to be really bad. Such lopsided ethical developments are not uncommon, and other ages too have had their pet virtues and curious insensibilities. And if one virtue must be cultivated at the expense of all the rest, none has a higher claim than mercy. . . . The real trouble is that “kindness” is a quality fatally easy to attribute to ourselves on quite inadequate grounds. Everyone feels benevolent if nothing happens to be annoying him at the moment. Thus a man easily comes to console himself for all his other vices by a conviction that “his heart’s in the right place” and “he wouldn’t hurt a fly,” though in fact he has never made the slightest sacrifice for a fellow creature. We think we are kind when we are only happy: it is not so easy, on the same grounds, to imagine oneself temperate, chaste, or humble. You cannot be kind unless you have all the other virtues. If, being cowardly, conceited and slothful, you have never yet done a fellow creature great mischief, that is only because your neighbour’s welfare has not yet happened to conflict with your safety, self-approval, or ease. Every vice leads to cruelty.

The Problem of Pain

He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that hearth reproof getteth understanding.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

St. Matthew 5:6

He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

St. Luke 11:23

What shall we then say to these things? If God be fore us, who can be against us?

Romans 8:31

Let it never surprise us if we are tempted of the devil. Let us rather expect it as a matter of course if we are living members of Christ. The Master’s lot will be the lot of his disciples. That mighty spirit who did not fear to attack Jesus himself is still going about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. That murderer and liar who vexed Job and overthrew David and Peter still lives and is not yet bound (Job 1:12; 2:6; 1 Chr. 21:1; Luke 22:31-32). If he cannot rob us of heaven, he will at any rate make our journey thither painful. If he cannot destroy our souls, he will at least bruise our heels (Gen. 3:15). Let us beware of despising him, or thinking lightly of his power. Let us rather put on the whole armor of God and cry to the strong for strength (James 4:7). Let us all watch and pray daily against his devices. There is no enemy worse than an enemy who is never seen and never dies, who is near to us wherever we live, and goes with us wherever we go.

On Hell

There is no doctrine which I would more willingly remove from Christianity than this, if it lay in my power. But it has the full support of Scripture and, specially, of Our Lord’s own words; it has always been held by Christendom; and it has the support of reason. If a game is played, it must be possible to lose it. If the happiness of a creature lies in self-surrender, no one can make that surrender but himself (though many can help him to make it) and he may refuse. I would pay any price to be able to say truthfully “All will be saved.” But my reason retorts, “Without their will, or with it?” If I say “Without their will” I at once perceive a contra- diction; how can the supreme voluntary act of self-surrender be involuntary? If I say “With their will,” my reason replies “How if they will not give in?”. . .

The doors of Hell are locked on the inside. I do not mean that the ghosts may not wish to come out of Hell, in the vague fashion wherein an envious man “wishes” to be happy: but they certainly do not will even the first preliminary stages of that self-abandonment through which alone the soul can reach any good. They enjoy forever the horrible freedom they have demanded, and are therefore self-enslaved: just as the blessed, forever submitting to obedience, become through all eternity more and more free.

The Problem of Pain

I consider the government of the United States as interdicted by the Constitution from intermeddling with religious institutions, their doctrines, discipline, or exercises. This results not only from the provision that no law shall be made respecting the establishment or free exercise of religion, but from that also which reserves to the States the powers not delegated to the United States.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 174-175, with the Collect first:

The Fourth Sunday after Easter.

The Collect.

O

 ALMIGHTYGod, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

This week’s Epistle came from the First Chapter of the Epistle of Saint James beginning at the Seventeenth Verse. James tells us we are the pinnacle of God’s creation, destined to be the stewards of His world.  This position has its privileges, but even more important it has its responsibilities.  Most of the time, we seem to concentrate on what we like, the privileges, and forget about those responsibilities which require work, putting off instant gratification, persistence and sometimes courage.  As Saint Paul so often tells us, we must become new people, putting aside our old ways, considerate of what we should do and let ourselves become open to His Word:

E

VERY good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

This week’s Holy Gospel came from the Sixteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the Fifth Verse.

You must recognize we are imperfect creatures with free will.  For us to do God’s Will, not ours, we need help.  We need that bit of good leaven, which will let our hearts rise to the occasion.  We need the Holy Ghost in our hearts and souls.  Listen as John tells us:

J

ESUS said unto his disciples, Now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Fourth Sunday after Easter

From Atlanta, Georgia

The Fourth Sunday after Easter.

The Collect.

O

 ALMIGHTYGod, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? 6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. (John 16:5-15)

But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? The Lord had told them often that He must leave them. The reaction of the disciples had been one of casual inquiry as to where He would go, but never a serious, heartfelt persistence in learning the answer (John 13:36 & 14:5). A casual inquiry into the Will of God in prayer will generally lead to no prompt response to that prayer. The Lord would have us make our petitions in earnest and serious persistence. The manner in which we pray will determine the manner in which we receive an answer. While Christ was with the disciples, the full brunt of hate would be directed towards Him. When He would depart, that hatred would descend upon His disciples – and upon us!

But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. Why the immoderate grief at the loss of a loved one by Christian people? If we know and believe that our loved ones ascend to the Strong Embrace of our Loving Lord, why the grief? We place too great an affection upon this present world and on all of it which we enjoy. The grief may more appropriately result from our own lot in remaining behind and missing the present company of our loved one. It is likely that the disciples, at this point, had believed only with a superficial understanding what Christ had meant about His returning to the Father. Rather than looking to the glorious resurrection and ascension, their foresight ended, where it had always ended in this mortal life, at the Tomb!

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. Christ came to us in human form. A human body lacks the versatility of movement that a spirit possesses – that is, to be at all places at once. It was expedient that Christ fulfill all of the requirements of the law for our redemption, and to return to the Father so that the compassionate and loving Holy Spirit would come to us! We have already observed how faithless the disciples were when physically parted from Christ – the disciples on the stormy seas, the men on the road to Emmaus, and Peter the night preceding the crucifixion! The Holy Spirit (or Comforter) would ALWAYS be with them and strengthen in the hour of trial and weakness. I need not remind you of the amazing courage and faith demonstrated by these same disciples once the Holy Spirit descended. Do we have that courage and conviction today? Do we, perchance, offend the Holy Spirit? Through the agency of the Holy Spirit, Christ is with us forever in our Emmaus walks.

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. A profoundly meaningful discourse here. Christ describes herein the ministry of the Holy Spirit in His operation toward the individual as well as the larger masses, the believer as well as the unbeliever. Not only will the Holy Spirit reveal righteousness to the Christian believer, but He will also CONVICT of sin the unbeliever and remove all doubt or excuse from His lips at the Judgment. He will accomplish this conviction through the power of the Word, for it is a two edged sword either to convince, or condemn! Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. That seals up the whole! Satan has already been judged and his fate sealed!

I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. It is likely that Christ has much more to say to each of us in due course, but we cannot receive it at once. Just as the disciples could not believe that Christ would raise Lazarus, or rise again on the third day, Himself, as prophesied prior to the crucifixion, we, likewise, cannot be mature enough at all points of our walk with God to have all things suddenly revealed to our unprepared ears. The knowledge of God requires consuming the Bread and Water of Heaven to build strong spiritual bones and muscles. Such bones and muscles do not appear overnight. “Line upon line, precept upon precept!”

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. I do love this passage! How shall He reveal that which is written about Christ if we have not yet taken the trouble to read and study the Word? He is our Guide, but we, too, must at least walk and follow. The Holy Spirit will not speak of Himself! In many churches today, we hear that they are a Holy Spirit Church. When such a claim is made, we can be sure that they are NOT a Holy Spirit Church for He will not speak of His own, but point, invariably, to Christ! He shall show us precious treasures and beauties from the Word concerning Christ alone! All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. The Holy Spirit will teach us ALL of Christ! And not only of Christ, the Son, but the Father as well, for They are ONE with the Spirit! The Church belongs to Christ for He purchased it with His own blood. So our Church is a Christian Church if we heed these truths, AMEN!

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

We are in the Easter Season which consists of Easter and the following four Sundays, until we get to Rogation Sunday.  This is a time we should work on centering our lives on the central figure in our religion, Jesus Christ.

Consider these words from the Collect:

who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found

The very first phrase is critical to understanding our relationship with the world.  We want to follow our own hearts and they will lead us down the path to Donkey Island and eventually the pit.  This explains the “unruly wills and affections of sinful men.”  Our natural wills and affections are towards sinful things and not that of God. God’s commandments to us are to re-shape our affections from things of mammon, to things of eternity. It requires tweaking our perspective on what is best for us to match with what God knows is the best for us. He knows us far better than we do, and knows what is actually best for us. We have one hope; that we will listen to the instruction God freely offers us.  If we will just do what He asks we will find true joy.

We have to make ourselves listen and not only listen, but follow His Commandments. It is not enough to hear the Word, we need to act it, to live out the meaning of His Word. We need to show others that we are dedicated to following the Lord, and not just say that we are following the Lord.  Our life will be better when we follow His directions and if we will allow God to rule us and desire His help, we will be able to attain the state of happiness we will then deserve. He knows what is right and what is wrong for us. He does not want us to lead Puritanical lives with no fun allowed whatsoever, but we must have fun the right way and not the wrong way. The right way can lead to a lifetime of happiness, whereas the wrong way can lead to a life time of misery. Many people think that God forbids things for us, because He does not want us to have fun. Nothing can be further from the truth. He forbids things that are harmful for our spiritual well being, and allows us to have clean spiritual, joyous things in our life that will develop our spiritual well being.

We need God’s help (this is one of the places the Holy Ghost comes in) to be able to want for ourselves that which He Wants for us.  If we can desire what He Wants, our ability to follow His Instructions will be much enhanced.

We are God’s creatures, first among all His Creation with all the privileges (which we like) and all the responsibility (which we are not so keen on) which come with that status.  All good comes from God, who is always with us; always the same; a true bearing in world in a constant state of flux. While the world may change, the Word will never change, no matter what happens in the world today. His Word is refreshing constant, in this world where things are changing every few years it seems, but His Word will never change. It’s meaning never changes, as God never changes. As God is truth, which by its nature cannot change, so should we never change in our beliefs towards Him. We need to listen to not only Him, but those around us, think before we speak, think more before we act in haste.  We must put ourselves to good and separate ourselves from evil and superfluity of naughtiness so we can hear His Word, which will save our souls.

So, how can we hear?

When Jesus got ready to leave this world for His, He told the disciples that He would send them the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, to keep them in Him and to help them understand what they had so far been unable to truly grasp.  Unless we allow the Holy Ghost to enter into our hearts, we will never truly understand that which is from God.  This is an important concept with messages that are not from God being bombarded across the world through principalities and powers of this world. Only the Holy Ghost can help us remain grounded within the truth. We need the Holy Ghost to enter into us that we might be able to hear the Word of God, and more important than just hearing the Word, we need the Holy Ghost to be able to act upon the Word. We must allow the Holy Ghost to enter in to our hearts and souls so we can understand what God has for us.  It is that simple.  Open your heart, pray for God to send Him into that open heart.

For with the Holy Ghost’s help, you can hear, understand and act on The Word.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Fourth Sunday after Epiphany

3 May 2015

Epistle  James 1:17-21  •  Gospel John 16:5-15

The Collect.

O

 ALMIGHTYGod, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Do you believe in coincidence or do you believe that God is in control?  I would like you to ponder something today.  Meditate on the Word of God that we find selected for this particular Sunday, the Fourth Sunday after Easter.  At first glance you see a familiar theme. God has sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Salvation. He has sent him to bring us back to God the Father.

Nothing that isn’t provable by the Old and New Testament proclamations about the first and second Advent of Christ the Redeemer.

Now I would like you to reflect on these two passages in light of the most recent events that have happened here in the United States in the last six to eight months.  Civil disobedience is a Constitutional right, the right to redress, peaceful assembly, righting wrongs in a civil and lawful manner, not I repeat not in the manner that has unfolded in the last few months.

What is the difference you ask?   Truth. “…of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.”   What would be the description of these first fruit creatures?   They would be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.  Why was this important?  “For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.”

The total lack of Christian ethics, morality and witness is evident in the civil disobedience that has swept the nation lately.  There has been no personal responsibility taken for the destruction and chaos that has been promulgated in the name of some vague reading of the Constitution.  Destruction and confusion was not the intent of the writers of that document, a right to redress, a right to seek correction to wrongs, but not to destroy in the name of stated rights.     “Two wrongs don’t make a right.”

In our Epistle and Gospel readings today we find the answer to why this chaos is happening today.

The Problem

First, the faith once delivered has been side-tracked, watered down or not taught any more, this has been most detrimental to believer and non-believer, because it causes uncertainty and unrest.  This problem can be laid directly at the feet of the modern church. Or should we call it the post-modern church?  Because that church doesn’t want to offend, it doesn’t want to drive away potential monies given by the membership, there is no hard preaching done any more.

Second, the concept of sin and its destructive nature to humans is no longer being preached in many of our churches today; the average church member has no idea why there is so much evil going on in the world around them.  Many books and articles have been penned that try to address the reason for “bad things happening to good people”, and yet they have for the most part missed the mark.   “All have sinned and come short of the Glory of God.”  We all have the stain of Adam, the sin that the first couple introduced into the world; we are all under that curse. But unless we are taught that this is so, we will go about our lives in total ignorance of what is wrong in our lives.

The promised Holy Spirit, the Comforter that Christ Jesus told his followers was coming after Christ ascended into heaven, would be the guiding force to teach us right from wrong.

Ok, so why isn’t it working?  This teaching of right from wrong is not being done in our churches today.  BECAUSE the churches have left the Truth and have gone after the World; abandoning the faith once given to it so many centuries ago.  The church has sought popularity and acceptance as a badge of success and in doing so the church has allowed the world to go to Hell and in many cases faithful members sitting in those pews week after week.  They are not being told the Truth.

Great stuff!   Ok, what do we do as a faithful remnant?

The Solution

First and foremost we must come back to God. We must confess our sins and seek forgiveness for the same. We must stop living like the world. We must stop trying to win popularity contests with the world.  The prize is worthless. It is dung. It will only keep the unbeliever from knowing the way to Salvation.

Second. We must recognize that God has given us all the tools in the ‘tool box of life’  to show the world who is the Only Way to God the Father; that of course being Jesus Christ the Lord.

We have the whole Word of God revealed to us; it is in that great resource, the Bible.  And so we must read, digest and inwardly apply the Word to our lives and our souls.  God’s Word will not return void.  He has given us this great resource; we still have the liberty in this nation to study and use the Bible in our daily walk with Him.

Third.  Pray.  Yes we must pray for those who have asked for prayer; whether it is for healing, solace, comfort or any other spiritual and even physical need, we must pray.

We must pray for each other. Ask God to guide and direct our lives. And we pray for those who may not ask us to pray for them, but who need the Savior and his gift of Salvation.

We must pray for those in authority, {St. Paul admonished us to do so} at all levels, local, state and national; all need our prayers to govern and do their duty as proscribed by the Judeo-Christian legal system that we currently live under.

Do you want confirmation on this topic that I have addressed today?  Reread the two passages of scripture, the one from St. James and the one from St. John.

Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in discernment and understanding, ask for guidance and most especially ask for strength to help you in this very massive struggle that is gripping the nation.  The struggle is for the very soul of our great nation.

We are very close to seeing all of our freedoms taken from us in the name of civil defense.  Pray that God will shed His light on these United States and that the nation will repent and turn from her wicked ways and come back to God.    May God have mercy on our Nation.

Let us pray:

O

 GOD we have heard with our ears, and our fathers have declared unto us, the noble works that thou didst in their days and in the old time before them.

O Lord, arise, help us, and deliver us for thine honor.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

From our enemies defend us O Christ.

Graciously look upon our afflictions.

With pity behold the sorrows of our hearts.

Mercifully forgive the sins of thy people.

Favorably with mercy hear our prayers.

O Son of David have mercy upon us.

Both now and ever vouchsafe to hear us O Christ.

Graciously hear us O Christ; graciously hear us, O Lord Christ.

Minister, O Lord, let thy mercy be showed upon us;

As we do put our trust in thee.                  Amen

W

E humbly beseech thee, O Father, mercifully to look upon our infirmities; and, for the glory of thy Name, turn from us all those evils that we most justly have deserved; and grant, that in all our troubles we may put our whole trust and confidence in thy mercy, and evermore serve thee in holiness and pureness of living, to thy honor and glory; through our only Mediator and Advocate, Jesus Christ our Lord.                    Amen.

May God be with you this coming week in all thing you do and say; that it may be for the honor and glory of His Name.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore.  Beloved go in Peace.        Amen.

Bishop Dennis is a brilliant speaker.  He is able to take biblical precepts and make them perfectly understandable, even to me.  Oft he provides the text of his sermons and I take the utmost pleasure in passing them on:

When Our Joy Is Complete: Part Two

Fourth Sunday after Easter

May 3, 2015

Last Sunday I spoke about the Christian’s joy.  I tried to emphasise the point that our real joy is not in this world.  Yes, there is much joy in this world, but that joy is mingled with much sorrow.  Sorrow comes from nature, storms and droughts and sickness and death.  It also comes from other people; war, crime, oppression, and all the “isms” that divide us.  Someone said all our isms ought to be wasms so we could get down to the real business of being Christians.  That’s good advice, but it is seldom followed.  Every now and then we see a revival of Christian belief and practice, but it is short lived, and even the very best of our cultures and institutions tend to disappoint us as they fall away from their charters and join the world’s politically confused ways.

I am not saying there is no joy in this world.  By God’s grace we have the love of families and friends.  We enjoy the fruits of our labours, and live in comfortable houses and eat nutritious and good tasting foods.  More importantly, we enjoy the forgiveness of sins, the Bible, the Church, prayer, and all the spiritual blessings God gives to those He has called into the faith and fellowship of Christ.  But the material blessings can, and will be taken from us some day.  And, even while we have them, they are in a continuing process of decay.  Just think of what would become of our houses if we were to stop the rounds of maintenance and repair.

Therefore, the Christian is always a stranger in this world, always a resident alien whose real home is in another place, in Heaven.  Our treasure is also in Heaven, along with our hearts.  And we know that only when we reach its eternal shores will our joy be complete.  Only then will we rejoice with a joy which “no man taketh from you.”

But it is hard to put all of your hope in Heaven isn’t it?  Who among us hasn’t thought, “What if there isn’t any Heaven?  What if Heaven and hell are here on earth?  What if this life is all I get, and the only happiness I’ll ever get is here and now?”  This fear, this lack of faith leads Christians into at least two errors.  First, it leads us to try to hedge our Heavenly bets by pursuing as much earthly happiness as we can get.  Second, it leads us to want signs and wonders.

When I say it leads us to seek as much happiness as we can get here on earth, I am not talking about the legitimate pursuit and enjoyment of material blessings.  I believe God wants us to enjoy His creation.  I believe He wants us to live comfortably.  We should enjoy a comfortable home, and good car,  good food, even an occasional holiday.  I am talking about a lifestyle and life-view that makes things and pleasures so important to us that they overshadow our hope of Heaven and our loyalty to Christ.

These pleasures aren’t always found in things.  They are often found in activities.  I know many people who call themselves Christians, whose real life-identity is found in a hobby, club, or community organisation.  In fact, they go to their hobbies and organisation’ activities instead of Church.  And these can be good things.  You may remember that my father was a Southern Baptist minister.  I remember him and one of his closest minister friends talking about such an organisation.  It was the local volunteer fire department, in which the friend served as a volunteer chaplain.  And he said something like this: “The problem with the firehouse is that it becomes their religion.  They go to the firehouse instead of going home to be fathers to their children and husbands to their wives, and they go to the firehouse instead of to Church.”  I think he was right, and I still see it happening today.

So the fear that this world might be all there is leads us to seek our happiness here instead of in Heaven.  It also leads us into a desire for signs and wonders.  The desire for signs and wonders has always been a part of human nature.  Christ noted it many times when He walked on the earth, and He always noted it as a problem.  It still is.  Signs and wonders can take many forms.  They can be healing miracles, financial prosperity, visions, prophecies, speaking in tongues, or just getting a good, emotional feeling at church. Knowing our natural desire for signs and wonders, many organisations, they wrongly call themselves churches, and many salesmen, they wrongly call themselves pastors or ministers, are in the business of providing them.  One of the most prevalent heresies of our time is the health and wealth gospel, which says that if you give money, or pray properly, or have the right faith, God is bound to give you health and wealth in this life.  If you  ask correctly and have enough faith, they say, your errant child will come to church.  You will get that promotion, and that new yacht, because your current one is obviously too small.  You will be healed of your disease.  You will live happily ever after.  Others specialise in “worship” that focuses on what previous generations called “animal excitements.”  We have all seen these churches on TV.  Maybe you have even been to one.  They have very stimulating music, emotional stories and testimonies, and enthusiastic messages by very dynamic speakers.  They use these things to manipulate people’s emotions so they get an emotional “high,” very similar to what they would get at a rock concert or sporting event.  And they say that experience is the result of the Holy Spirit working in the people’s lives.  And the people believe it because they feel good.  In other words, they judge the experience by their feelings rather than the Bible.  The feeling validates the service, in their minds.

The feeling also validates their faith.  It is their “proof” that their faith is correct.  It proves to them that God is real and they are going to Heaven.  I said a few minutes ago that all of us wonder if Heaven is real or not.  We all have doubts and fears.  So, if you sometimes doubt, you are not alone.  Everyone does.  And we would all love to have solid proof that what we believe is the absolute truth.  Who wouldn’t love to see people raised from the dead, or hear God speak from Heaven as He spoke to Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration?

And yet, even these would not dispel all doubts.  People saw them in Christ’s day, yet they remained in sin and unbelief.  What is the evidence, then, of the reality and truth of our hope of joy in Heaven that no man taketh from us?  The answer is given in Hebrews 11:1.  “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”  This tiny, weak, trembling, doubting, fear-filled trust in God, which we call faith, is our evidence.  Not feelings.  Not religious experiences.  Not speaking in tongues, or seeing visions, or hearing prophesies, or getting money, or being healed.  Not the applause of the world. Not pleasing activities and pastimes.  None of these things can ever replace good, old-fashioned faith that takes God at His word, and does what He wants.  There is an old Gospel song that puts it this way,

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way

To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

We try so many other things.  We fill our lives with toys and activities.  We look for experiences and feelings and miracles to prove God and make us happy.  We try to buy happiness with money, or drown sorrow with experiences, to include drugs and alcohol.  But the reality is, they don’t really work.  They cannot remove the sorrows of life.  They cannot give us the strength to continue on in spite of the sorrows.  They cannot give us the hope of a better place, where the only thing that dies is sorrow.  Only God can do these things,  And we have God by faith.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Fourth Sunday after Easter

Sermon text for the Fourth Sunday after Easter:
In today’s gospel, our Lord promised the disciples that He would send the Holy Ghost the Comforter to reprove the world of sin (v.8). To reprove a thing means to call attention to it in the form of a rebuke. It means identifying sin as anything— thought, word, or deed— that is objectionable to God. Sin cannot hide from the light of God’s Spirit as he will make it manifest and open— shed of its disguise— for all to see.

The Holy Ghost also directs us in the use of God’s word written. For within its sacred pages, we have been supplied with examples for our edification (v.13). Consider the following passages for they reveal both the error as well as the consequence for sin:

In Numbers 25:1-9, the Hebrews turned away from the Lord God to worship the Moabite gods at Peor and were punished with a plague.

In Judges 2:11-15, it is noted that following the death of Joshua, the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD and served the gods of the Canaanites, Ammonites and Moabites. Because of this, God gave them over to those people to punish them until such time as they repented and called again upon his name.

In I Kings 16:28-33 and 17:1, we find Ahab, king of Israel, worshiping and serving Baal and Astarte which resulted in a curse on his kingdom as well as upon himself and his entire dynasty.

In II Kings 21:13, 15, Manasseh, king of Judah, rebuilt the high places where foreign deities were worshiped and built altars for all the hosts of heaven in the house of the LORD. Because of this, the Lord God promised: I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down…because they have done that which was evil in my sight and have provoked me to anger, since the day their fathers came forth out of Egypt, even unto this day.

Several of the prophets spoke against the idolatry of the children of Israel. In Isaiah 44:9-20, the prophet penned a scathing piece concerning the utter futility of idol worship. He detailed how a man fashioned a deity from the trunk of a tree. The prophet— in a clearly mocking tone— observed how an idolater used part of the wood to warm his home and cook his food, while with the other portion he made a god to bow before. Isaiah saw, first hand, how the people of Judah had been redeemed from the hand of the Assyrians by the LORD under King Hezekiah, as well has how quickly they turned their backs on him. He called the people to return to a proper worship of the LORD, but his pronouncements fell on deaf ears; just as the LORD told him (Isaiah 6:9-13).

The prophet Jeremiah also saw the evil of the children of Israel. Speaking under the influence of the Holy Ghost he said, I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands (1:16).

These are, of course, only a few of the numerous examples found within the pages of Scripture. But lest you think “that was then, this is now”, beware! The Christian Church also has a checkered past of heresies and intermural squabbles. Within the New Testament we find the following:

  • St. Paul (in Acts 20:28-31), warned the Ephesians elders to: Take heed therefore unto yourselves and to all the flock, over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers…for I know this, that after my departing, shall grievous wolves enter among you…also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

  • Again the apostle warned (Galatians 1:6-9): I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him who called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel, which is not another; but there be some that trouble you and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed… if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

  • He also advised the Colossians (2:8), Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the traditions of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

  • And to the youthful Timothy (II St. Timothy 4:2-4) he wrote: Preach the word! Be instant in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

  • St. Peter noted in his second epistle (2:1): But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them…

Several years ago, I read a position paper by one benighted soul who wrote, “God is like an ocean who washes up on different shores in different forms.” If that were even remotely true, then God would have not commanded the children of Israel to avoid the religious practices of the various nations surrounding them. Remember, the Holy Ghost guides us into all truth, so such an idea did not come from on high, but from our adversary who had succeeded in leading that poor soul away from God.

God’s works are apparent to all who would but open their eyes to behold them. Some are easily understood while others are amazingly complex and mysterious. As he informed Isaiah (55:8), his ways are not like ours, neither are his thoughts like our thoughts. Yet, God would not have us ignorant as he has given us his word written to serve as a light unto our path and a lamp unto our feet. Within its pages, the truth about God and ourselves is clearly set forth. Ergo, all who are of his elect and beloved, as St. John noted in his first epistle (2:3), will heed the words of Scripture.

God revealed himself to the Hebrews in the wilderness via the works of Moses and Joshua. He gave his promise of redemption through the prophets, and he confirmed said promises through the miracles and teachings of his only begotten Son. Needless to say, the world was not satisfied. Truth be known, the world will never be satisfied because its master will not permit such, and therein lies the rub. Consider the following questions: Are you a child of God, or are you a child of the god of this world? Do you hear and heed the gospel message, or do you turn to pagan teachings and practices for relief? Do you believe God has sent the Comforter into the world to reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment? or, Do you deny the judgment of God in favor of a more inclusive approach to salvation?

All who are of God will heed the urging of Holy Ghost and will turn from their wickedness and live. God’s Spirit is not to be taken lightly, and neither should his work and standing as a principal figure in the Godhead be diminished. We should bear in mind that true Christians are Trinitarian in their belief. A true Christian accepts the mystery of the triune nature of God. True Christians understand that the workings of the Holy Ghost are for their edification. They will not quench the Spirit of God but will keep their vessels— their bodies— as clean and swept as they can for they know who resides within them.

We have been called of God to embrace the Saviour. We have been summoned to the marriage feast of the Lamb. Our attendance at that long-called for gathering of the saints can only be realized through our acceptance of him who is our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ. He has called us to obedience, and in that obedience we have come to worship the Godhead looking for and praying for the coming of that day when he returns. May God grant you his peace and blessing as we await the return of the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Let us pray,

F

ather, help us at all times to love those things which thou lovest and to seek those things which are above where you sit; for this we ask in the name of him who now sits at your right hand interceding for us, even our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

The Islamist group (ISIS) just took over Quaragosh, the biggest Christian city in Iraq; 164 men, women and children were beheaded.  People ask where is God?  The real question is where are the people to enforce God’s will.  Pray the people of the world will see Allah for who he is, the Devil.  Pray for those who remain behind that they might find a way to safety.
