Sunday Report

Today we celebrated the Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Celebrate Diversity or Unity?

If we move in mass, be it ever so circuitously, we shall attain our object; but if we break into squads, everyone pursuing the path he thinks most direct, we become an easy conquest to those who can now barely hold us in check.

Talking

Speak seldom, but to important subjects, except such as particularly relate to your constituents, and, in the former case, make yourself perfectly master of the subject.

Death

Death opens a door out of a little, dark room into a great, real place where the true sun shines & we shall meet.

Heaven

“Further up and further in!” roared the Unicorn, and no one held back. They charged straight at the foot of the hill and then found themselves running up it almost as water from a broken wave runs up a rock out at the point of some bay. Though the slope was nearly as steep as the roof of a house and the grass was smooth as a bowling green, no one slipped. Only when they had reached the very top did they slow up; that was because they found themselves facing great golden gates. And for a moment none of them was bold enough to try if the gates would open. They all felt just as they had felt about the fruit—“Dare we? Is it right? Can it be meant for us?”

But while they were standing thus a great horn, wonderfully loud and sweet, blew from somewhere inside that walled garden and the gates swung open.

Many today will believe what men write and say about the Bible, before they will believe the Bible itself… the political and religious tyranny of the Dark Ages was only possible as long as the scriptures were interpreted for the people by a priest class of language scholars, who burned vernacular versions when they could. Cults characterized by the fact that, while recognizing the Bible as a noble book, they move its authority on to something else… It is invariably something or someone that purports to reveal what the Bible really means. What better way to deceive people than to tell them that they can not read the actual word of God for themselves.

Those who are fond of telling us in modern times that kindness and love are sufficient to regenerate man and keep man good, are always forgetting the mighty lesson that is taught us by the history of the Jews. The corruption of man is a far worse disease than your modern philosophers suppose. Israel was surrounded by mercies and loving kindness: yet Israel fell. Let that never be forgotten.

When the Crusaders were victorious and established kingdoms and principalities in the Middle East, they generally let the Muslims in their domains live in peace, practice their religion freely, build new mosques and schools, and maintain their own religious tribunals… The Spanish Muslim Ibn Jubayr (1145-1217) who traversed the Mediterranean on his way to Mecca in the early 1180’s, found that Muslims had it better in the lands controlled by the Crusaders than they did in Islamic lands. Those lands were more orderly and better managed than those under Muslim rule, so that even Muslims preferred to live in the Crusader realms.

The Republican Party tells conservatives what they want to hear while taking its marching orders from an infrastructure of advisers, experts and consultants who urge it to implement the same old bad ideas while lying to the public. That is how we got here in more ways than one. Republican politicians want to win elections without changing anything. They want to do the ‘sensible’ thing which means keeping up the status quo and not rocking the boat. The only way to do that is by lying a lot.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 212-213, with the Collect first:

The Collect.

O

 LORD, we beseech thee, let thy continual pity cleanse and defend thy Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without thy succour, preserve it evermore by thy help and goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Today’s Epistle came from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, the Third Chapter beginning at the Thirteenth Verse. Paul, writing to the church in Ephesus, prays that the people might “be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.”   More simply put, Paul asks that we open our hearts to God and to Christ, that they might work in our hearts the miracle of love.

I

 DESIRE that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory. For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Today’s Holy Gospel started in the Seventh Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the Eleventh Verse.  Jesus was going into the city of Nain with his disciples and many followers.  “When he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.”  In those days, a widow with only one son had little, a widow with no son was in deep trouble.  Taking compassion on her and also the opportunity to make His power evident, He came to the bier, and touch it said, “Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.”  The young man arose and began to speak; whereupon Jesus brought him to his mother.  Not surprisingly, news of this event was spread “forth throughout all Judæa, and throughout all the region round about.”  Like the young man, we are dead to eternity until we hear the command “… Arise.”  If we hear and act on that command, we have eternal life, just like the young man, it starts right then!

A

ND it came to pass the day after, that Jesus went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judæa, and throughout all the region round about.

The Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

O

 LORD, we beseech thee, let thy continual pity cleanse and defend thy Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without thy succour, preserve it evermore by thy help and goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

11 And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. 12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. 13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. 14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. 15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. 16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. 17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about. 18 And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things. (Luke 7:11-18)

Death has forever been a veil to mortal eyes beyond which we cannot see, but must, sooner or later, go. There are two degrees of death – one spiritual, the other physical. It is possible to be spiritually alive but physically dead; and it is also possible to be physically alive and spiritually dead. It would be the greatest tragedy in any person’s life to be both spiritually AND physically dead since there is no remedy for spiritual death after the physical body has deceased. Christ had the divine power to heal and make alive on BOTH sides of death. Jesus has just come out from Capernaum where He healed the Centurion’s servant from what seemed probable death, and He did so at a distance. Now He comes near to Nain and is confronted once more with death that is not imminent but rather ‘post mortem.’

You will recall three instances of Jesus raising persons from the dead at various stages of time.

  1. Your attention is invited to the precious little twelve-year-old daughter of Jairus, the ruler of the
synagogue. She died and was restored to life on her deathbed. My heart melts with love for that little girl and the Great Savior who restored her to her grieving parents each time I read the narrative from Luke 8.

  1. On the present occasion of His trip to Nain, the Lord meets a funeral procession of one who is no longer on his deathbed, but on a bier being transported to the grave in procession with his grieving mother and friends and neighbors.

  1. On a future occasion, on His Way to Jerusalem to offer Himself up for our sins, Jesus restored
to life an older gentleman who had already been buried for four days, Lazarus, the brother of Martha, at Bethany.

The above examples should comfort us to know the element of time and deterioration of the physical body is not an impediment to Christ in resurrecting His own. Whether these mortal bodies lie in the grave four days, or ten thousand years, He is able to raise us up at the appointed time and restore our bodies to a perfect state.

Who are the dead?   &  Who are the living? 11 “And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. 12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.”

The Dead

Those who reject Christ as Lord and Savior. Those who have no forgiveness for their sins…those for whom there has been no redemption for sins. That includes all the world which dwells in utter darkness.

ALL were dead in trespasses and sins before being made alive in Christ by the Holy Spirit: “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.” (Eph 2:1-2)

The dead hear not. Who stopped their ears? Not God. Not even Satan. They themselves have chosen to be dumb to the reality of God.

The Living

This son of the widow is dead, but death cannot exist in the presence of the Fountain of Life.

Jesus knows the importance of a son or daughter to a widow. The boy is all his mother has.

The widow made no audible request of Christ, but Christ knew her abject sorrow and took compassion on her as He always does with those who face calamity.
 13 “And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.”

Jesus never desires our sorrow, but our joy in life.  He neither wants us to ‘fear’ or to ‘weep’. “Fear not, I am with thee always, even unto the end of the world.” Or “Hagar, why weepest thou?”

The desire of Christ is always for our extreme joy in Him. And Christ knows there is no real joy, or life, apart from that which He offers.

He sends no one to Hell. The lost, due to their rejection of Him, send themselves to Hell.
 14 “And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. When God is at work, we had best stand still and see the marvelous works that His hands perform. Stillness is a vanishing quality in a world bent on technology and pragmaticism.  As God said to Job in Job 37:14 “Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God”

 Or Psalms 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

So those who bore the body remained motionless while God  worked.

“And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.”

Though the ears of the Rabbi’s maiden were closed in the lock of death, the young girl heard the voice of Christ. Though Lazarus lay long dead in a stone cold tomb, the voice of Christ, his friend, penetrated the bars of death and were heard in newness of life. So with this young man.

“And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.”

Was dead!

No longer dead because he had heard and responded to the voice of Christ. He sat up and began to speak. Once you have heard the voice of Christ whisper in your ear a personal message, you cannot fail to speak out. You do not keep it a secret.

Have you heard that voice?

Has your dead ears responded in life?

When were you dead, and have you been called to life?

Have you listened?

Did you respond by unashamedly speaking out?

We were ALL dead prior to responding in faith to the grace of Christ. All lost. All dead.

Howe many are righteous?
  10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (
Romans 3:23)

ALL?

Does that include you and me?

Yes, ALL!

What is the condemnation to those who sin, such as you and I have?
 20 “For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. 22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. What remedy is there for all of us who are born under the condemnation  of sin?Rom10: 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed(Romans 6)

Christ is the great Creator and Giver of Life. Death will not exist in His presence. So we must insure our salvation that we may be present with him.

How?

Know the wages of sin is death
.

Admit we are dreadful sinners and cannot save ourselves through any good works
.

Repent of our sins and turn away from the desires of the flesh.

Receive Christ as you Lord and Savior – not simply Savior, but Lord of your life as well.

How many of us present today have taken a ‘dry’ shower, or a ‘dry’ swim, or walked in a ‘dry’ rain?

Is it possible to get into the water, or to come into contact with a fountain of water, and remain dry?

There is a River of Life which makes all alive who bathe therein and drink from its fountain:

John 4: 13 “Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

 When we are IN Christ, all our sins are covered by His blood. When we are IN the River of Life, we are wet with that water of life all over. We are baptized in newness of life.

Your eternal destiny depends upon which choice you make at the crossroads of life – will you be fearful and unbelieving? Or will you partake of the Tree of Life and Fountain of Living Waters?
Rev 21: 5 ”And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Simple decision – John 3:15 “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
Have you, too, believed unto salvation?

For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.  (2 Cor 6:2)

Sermon Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Todays sermon tied the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and talked, as is oft the case, of the need for action, not simply diction.

Consider the words of the Collect, “…let thy continual pity cleanse and defend thy Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without thy succour, preserve it evermore by thy help and goodness …”

When the Collect talks about the church, just like last week, it is not talking about buildings; it is talking about us.   Each of us; all of us and together.  We need Gods help (pity) to keep the group of us together following His Will, for without His Help (Holy Ghost) we are doomed to utter failure.  We can see this in the church today.  Many churches are leaving the Bible used for over 2,000 years and adopting newfangled translations which mangle His Word.  When they leave the theology Christ gave to us, they soon find they are on a broad easy path paved with smooth talking New Age pagan theology.  The problem is that Heaven is at the end of a hard and narrow uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.  That seemingly easy way leads to the Pit. The way of the easy to read Bibles with their corrupt non Received Text manuscripts is not the way to go. This proves the truth of this collect, that without His help, we are doomed. With His Help, we are set for success for evermore.  He offers, do we accept?

That leads us to Saint Pauls point:  If we will open our hearts to God, He will send the Holy Ghost to fill our hearts with Love, Courage, Inspiration, Tenacity and Confidence, to mention just a few helpful additions to our portfolio. In short, all of the things that will help our character development. Once the Holy Ghost enters into us, we will know the full dimensions of Christ, the height, width and depth of His love for us, and this fullness will fill us to our content, and we will want to spread that Good News and Love of Him to others.  This is what the truly the Good News is all about, His love for us. His love that He died that we might have eternal life, a happier life here and a happier life after our life here. He offers all of these things for our benefit, so that we will be successful for Him. We have to accept this offer by opening our hearts to Him.  One of my favorite cartoon strips Calvin and Hobbes, oft has great moral lessons.   Calvins dad so very often reminds Calvin that doing ones duty in the face of adversity builds character.  It also strengths the soul building trust in God.  If we will open our hearts to Him, our ears will hear the command “… Arise.  When we rise, we rise with the confidence of immortals and can conquer any obstacle. We will have died in our  old sinful ways and are resurrected like our Lord in a new spirit and a new birth of everlasting freedom. But, without an open heart, our ears will never hear the command directed to our soul, “… Arise.  We will be dead to eternity. There are none so deaf as those who will not hear.

Open your heart to our Lord and arise.  Arise; go forth with Love, Courage, Inspiration, Tenacity and Confidence to fight the battle our Lord leads us into.

All Jesus asks is that we follow Him.  That is all follow Him.  But, words mean something.  The word follow is very important.

I have heard my dad say many times in the military fighter world the strongest acceptance and recognition of excellence that can be given is, “You lead; I’ll follow.”  For to do so is to put your life in the other’s hands.  Literally, completely and without question.  It is a matter of putting the light on the star and hanging in there.   It is said by few to an even smaller number.  When you break out of the cloud after an hour of GE-28 Volt burning in your retina and see the runway or pop over the ridge after a half hour of dodging trees and triple A and the target is right there in the reticle, or gunsight, it is all okay.  Sometimes in between, it does not seem like it will turn out that way.  What makes you keep the light on the star is trust.  Just like the Marines in World War II had to put their trust in their squad/platoon/company leader that they would be able to outfight the Japanese for example. Even through the hell of battle, they surely must have felt relief when they were able to finally push the Japanese out of the islands. Like them, we have to trust God to get us through whatever hell the enemy can throw at us. I see this as another aspect of that truth.  The numbers are different in the case of God.  We all (unlikely to happen) need to put our lives in the hands of a small number (that would be ONE).

We need recognize who has the ability, the power, the perfection in leadership and have that trust to say, “You lead; I’ll follow.” I believe that is what Jesus expects from us in regard to our entire life. We may get out of position or even go lost wingman on the odd occasion, but he expects us to Our very best to follow His lead and stay in position.  Hard to do if your eye is not padlocked on Him.

I might add, as ministers of our Lord, we have a similar responsibility to those who would follow us here on earth.  And we have to work even harder, for created by a perfect God, we are imperfect creatures with free will.  A problematic combination.  We must strive for a correct attitude, heading, stability and predictability in our path so that we can be followed towards that final destination that marks a successful mission. We must always be checking our navigational instruments of the Holy Scriptures and our navigator the Holy Ghost, to ensure that we are following on the right heading. We have to be willing to do actions for Him to show that we truly do have faith and not just say that we have faith. It is a lot easier to say than do, that is for sure.  It is easy to get wrapped up in little words and over analyze each word of Scripture rather than just taking the whole with the faith of a Child and taking the big picture in, rather than a shred of tapestry close in.

When Saint Luke relates the story of the Widow of Nain, it is more than just a simple miracle.

In those days, a widow with only one son had little, a widow with no son was in deep trouble.  Jesus took compassion on her and also took the opportunity to make His power evident.  He came to the bier, and touched it saying, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.  The young man arose and began to speak; whereupon Jesus brought him to his mother.  Not surprisingly, news of this event was spread forth throughout all Judæa, and throughout all the region round about.  Like the young man, we are dead to eternity until we hear the command “… Arise.  If we hear and act on that command, we have eternal life, just like the young man, it starts right then! Eternal life doesn’t start when you take your last breath, it starts when you take your first breath! Think through your life like it will be eternity and plan your actions accordingly.

Also, please take note Jesus ACTED.  He did not just tell the widow He was sorry, so very sorry; He actually did what He could to help her.  He can do more than we can, but we can do more than we do and we can certainly do more than just talk.  Words are very nice, but do not mean a whole lot unless they are backed by words.

If we truly have faith, then we will have good actions that will follow with that faith. If we only speak with our lips and do not have good actions, then we do not have any faith. However, if we do truly have faith, then we will speak the right things and do the right things.

Action, not diction, is what counts in the end.

Heaven is at the end of a hard and narrow uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

Bishop Dennis is a brilliant speaker.  He is able to take biblical precepts and make them perfectly understandable, even to me.  Oft he provides the text of his sermons and I take the utmost pleasure in passing them on:

Blood Moon – Part Two

Joel 2:31

Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity

September 20, 2015

The hype has been started and perpetuated primarily by three men, all of whom are adherents of a relatively new brand of theology called dispensationalism. The flagship doctrine of dispensationalism is the “rapture.” We’ve all heard about this. It is the idea that the Church is an interruption of God’s plan for the Jews.  But the Christians will be physically taken to Heaven in the rapture, then God’s plan for the Jews will continue to its fulfilment. Dispensationalists are always looking for signs that the rapture is near. With the Matthew 24 in one hand, and the newspaper in the other, they often pronounce current events as the fulfilment of prophecy and decisive signs that the rapture is near. One major problem with this is Matthew 24 is not about signs of the Second Coming of the Lord. In fact the Lord Himself says the wars and earthquakes and false prophets are not signs of anything (Mt. 24:6).  They are just the normal events of life in a fallen world[1].  A second problem with this view is Matthew 24 is not even about the Second Coming or the “rapture.” Matthew 24 is about the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, which happened in 70 AD So there is a problem with these men’s theology right at the beginning. Just for your own information, much of the book of Revelation also deals with the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Also just for your information, the New Testament Church is not an interruption of God’s plan for the Jews; it is the fulfilment of that plan. We are in the era of fulfilment, when the promises of God to and through Israel are being fulfilled through and in the Church by the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

The coming lunar eclipse is the last of four consecutive total eclipses. The idea popularised by these men is that when the fourth consecutive total eclipse occurs on a Jewish holiday, it signifies a world changing event, centering around the Jewish people. As proof of this, one man has looked through history at the last three times there have been four consecutive total lunar eclipses. He has also found significant events that have occurred in conjunction with these eclipses, which he calls, “blood moons.” The first one, he says, happened in 1492. In that year the Inquisition was happening in Spain, and there was a concerted attempt to force all Jews out of the country. The blood moon, according to this man, was a warning and a sign that this was about to happen to the Jews.

Next, he looks at May 14 1948, which is the day Israel formally organised into a nation. This happened in conjunction with a fourth consecutive blood moon. The third  event happened on June 5, 1967. The Event is known as the Six Days War, in which Israel captured Jerusalem, and made it part of their new nation. The lunar eclipses, then, according to these men, were prophetic signs that these things were about to happen.

There is a problem with the calculation of these men’s timing of the events and the eclipses. Two of these events happened before the eclipses, not after.  In the first one, the Jews were expelled from Spain on July 30, 1492, but the eclipse did not happen until September 25, 1493. That’s thirteen months after the expulsion.  There was an eclipse on April 2,  1493, but it did not occur on an Old Testament festival, so these men don’t count it, and even it was eleven months late.

In the second one, Israel was formally organised as a nation on May 14, 1948. The eclipse did not happen until April 13 1949. That’s 11 months after the event.

The third event, the Six Day War, began on June 5, 1967. But the blood moon happened on April 24, 1967.  This one did happen before the event.  It happened 41 days before the war began. So if these blood moons are signs from God that something significant is about to happen, God only got one out of three right. Only one of the three events happened after the blood moon. The other two events happened a year before the eclipses.

There are two possible conclusions we can make based on these facts.  First, we can conclude that these men are right, but God’s timing was wrong.  The men had the right idea, but God was late with the signs.  Second, we can conclude that the men are wrong about the eclipses. The blood moons are just eclipses, not signs.  Since I don’t think God miscalculated, I have to conclude that the men are wrong, and these particular lunar eclipses were not prophetic signs from God.  From this, I am forced to another conclusion.  If those moons were not signs, I have to conclude the coming eclipse is also not a sign.  I could state it this way, if those men were wrong about the past eclipses, I have to conclude they are probably wrong about this one too.

There is something else that is very significant about the selection of the “blood moons” and  events; namely, what makes these events so special they needed a sign?  There are many other very significant events in the history of Israel that went without signs. Six million Jews died in the “holocaust,” Why was there no sign?  Hundreds of thousands of Jews died in the Babylon Captivity.  Jerusalem was burned, and even the Temple was destroyed. Why was no sign given?.  Prophets were sent, like Jeremiah, but there was no sign.  In about 922 B.C. the nation of Israel divided into two separate countries.  This was a momentous event in Jewish history.  It divided Israel politically, geographically, and theologically.  It turned Israel into a house divided against itself, and made it easy for the surrounding nations to oppress and conquer it.  Yet no sign was given.  No “blood moon” occurred.  The point I am trying to make is that the selection of these events, and their coordination with the total lunar eclipses, is completely arbitrary on the part of the three men who have popularised this blood moon theory.  They started with the idea that the four consecutive total lunar eclipses are signs from God, then they arbitrarily chose events, and claimed they are the events the eclipses warned about.  You can do the same with any date.  Choose any date you want, and, if you look hard enough, you can find a significant event that happened on that date, because significant events happen every day.

So, will something important happen on or around the coming lunar eclipse?  Of course.  Important things happen every day, and they won’t stop, or start , because of this eclipse.  Will some of these events affect Israel?  Of course.  Every important event affects everyone.  John Donne was correct in For whom the Bell Tolls.  If one grain of sand is washed away from a beach in England, the whole island is diminished.  If one man dies, everyone is affected.  So every event affects us all.  But is the coming lunar eclipse a sign from God?  No.

I’ll tell you what is a sign from God.  It’s called the Bible.  It has many commandments that show us the principles and values that make life worth living and enable us to live together on planet earth.  It has many promises to those of us who fail to fully live according to the commandments; promises about forgiveness and restoration to God through the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  And it has many warnings about the results of disobedience and sin.  That is the real sign.

Therefore, as the Collect for the Second Sunday in Advent teaches, let us hear them, read, learn, and inwardly digest the Scriptures, that by patience and comfort of God’s holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life’ which He hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity

20 September 2015, AD

Psalm 116 • Isaiah 12 • John 11:21-44

God is my Salvation

The Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

O

 LORD, we beseech thee, let thy continual pity cleanse and defend thy Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without thy succour, preserve it evermore by thy help and goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Isaiah 12

A

nd in that day thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.

2 Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.

3 Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

4 And in that day shall ye say, Praise the Lord, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.

5 Sing unto the Lord; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth.

6 Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.

      There really is no such thing as coincidence.   Non-believers may look at the Fates, karma, kismet or some other ideas of chance, for the most part it isn’t so with the believer.  When a follower of Christ sees or experiences things that all seem to fit together, they know that all things work together to them who are called according to his purpose.

This week has been one of multiple experiences that all have fit together.  I was able to work with a group of local high school history teachers, a number of elected officials, the local community college and the American Legion which resulted in a day long event for some 80 high school students.  This group of dedicated folk helped to present to the government classes of the county high schools, a series of meetings and talks aimed at familiarizing the young people with civic service.  The Randolph County Government Day is an annual event that has been sponsored by the local American Legion for at least 20 years. I was able to be a part of that, to see the future of our nation experience, at the local level, elected government in action.  This action is a direct result of at least two centuries of dedicated labor of faith based men and women; who by service, by design, by authoring documents based on the Judeo-Christian principles that made this nation great.   These founding fathers, these principled men and women did not come together by chance. No I believe that they were all part of a divine plan to offer the world a place of difference. A place where God given freedoms were allowed to grow, flourish and produce great institutions, ideas and our great nation.

I would like you to read that very short chapter of Isaiah, the 12th one, and notice a parallel with the very foundational element of our nation.

The idea of the Lord turning his anger from us, because we praise him. We trust in him and do not fear, we know that our salvation is in God, he is our strength, he is our song (that cheers us when we are down).

This past Thursday, I believe I saw Verse Five being manifest. ‘…sing unto the Lord; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth…’   The United States is a blessed nation, we are known throughout the world as such. He, God, has done an excellent thing and it is known in all the earth…’   I am not trying to make crazy prophetic utterances.  No I am trying to show how the Lord has blessed us, we as adults need to share that blessing to our young people, letting them see that this nation is by design, an exceptional nation, like none other in the history of the world.  I think that we tried to share that message with our youth this past week, on the very day set aside for the honoring of that great document, the U.S. Constitution.

On this past Saturday, the 19th,  Janet and I had to privilege of going to a series of events that were organized to recognize the sacrifice of a young sailor, a SEAL, who died in the line of duty in Afghanistan.  Adam O. Smith was not even thirty years old when he lost his life in a helicopter accident when his SEAL team was going out on a mission.  At almost every level of the commemorations of this young sailor there was an acknowledgment of the divine. This was most evident by the actions and behavior of his immediate family, the honor guard, Patriot Guard and a fellow SEAL.  Almost to the person, they describe the faith of the fallen sailor, they had words of praise to God the Creator, his Son Jesus Christ, and the great things that the Lord had done in the lives of those left behind.

Janet and I witnessed the very words of Isaiah, this fourth verse of chapter 12….

And in that day shall ye say, Praise the Lord, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.

I conclude this brief message with a re-reading of our psalm for the day, the 116th.  Listen to all the words of this writing of the psalmist. See how his writing is a direct reference to the foundational elements of our United States AND an understanding of great sacrifice that this young sailor made for his nation. Note verse 15.  Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

Psalm 116

I

 love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.

Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.

3   The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.

4   Then called I upon the name of the Lord; O Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.

5    Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.

6    The Lord preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me.

7    Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.

8   For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

9   I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

10 I believed, therefore have I spoken: I was greatly afflicted:

11 I said in my haste, All men are liars.

12 What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me?

13 I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord.

14 I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people.

15 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

16 O Lord, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.

17 I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord.

18 I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people.

19 In the courts of the Lord’s house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the Lord.

Let us pray:

O

 ETERNAL Lord God, who alone spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea; Vouchsafe to take into thy almighty and most gracious protection our country’s Navy, and all who serve therein. Preserve them from the dangers of the sea, and from the violence of the enemy; that they may be a safeguard unto the United States of America, and a security for such as pass on the seas upon their lawful occasions; that the inhabitants of our land may in peace and quietness serve thee our God, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A

LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, in whose hands are the living and the dead; We give thee thanks for all those thy servants who have laid down their lives in the service of our country. Grant to them thy mercy and the light of thy presence, that the good work which thou hast begun in them may be perfected; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord. Amen.

O

 gracious Father, since it is of thy mercy that another day is added to our lives; We here dedicate both our souls and our bodies to thee and thy service, in a sober, righteous, and godly life: in which resolution, do thou, O merciful God, confirm and strengthen us; that, as we grow in age, we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

M

OST merciful God, we beseech thee to continue thy gracious protection to us this coming night. Defend us from all dangers and mischiefs, and from the fear of them; that we may enjoy such refreshing sleep as may fit us for the duties of the following day. Make us ever mindful of the time when we shall lie down in the dust; and grant us grace always to live in such a state, that we may never be afraid to die: so that, living and dying, we may be thine, through the merits and satisfaction of thy Son Jesus Christ, in whose Name we offer up these our imperfect prayers. Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity

In our epistle today we heard the hopeful words of the apostle Paul: …that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with the fulness of God (Ephesians 3:17-18). And afterwards, he penned the following: Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen (Ephesians 3:20-21). The Rev. Matthew Henry said that, “There is an inexhaustible fullness of grace and mercy in God which the prayers of all the saints can never draw dry. Whatever we may ask or think, still God is able to do more, abundantly more. We should encourage our faith by a consideration of his all-sufficiency and almighty power.”

In another place, the apostle Paul advised Christians to … put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof (Romans 13:14). In our reliance upon God, we ought avoid making frivolous requests as he knows all too well what the consequences would be should he give them to us. If we are asking amiss then we cannot expect such requests to be answered in the affirmative (St. James 4:1-4).

There is also the attendant matter regarding the personage of God. If we expect him to fulfil our requests, then it is incumbent on each of us to accept him as he is— the one, true and living God. In his first epistle, St. John wrote: Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God… (4:2) He also noted that, Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God (4:15).

Now one might think that every person who claims to be a Christian would be in agreement with these passages regarding the fundamental truths contained therein. No doubt some s do, but there are a fair number of folks who do not. These infidels— as their predecessors— have worked their way into the several denominations of today where they are peddling every sort of false doctrine and false teaching which cloud men’s minds and keeps them from discerning the true doctrines of the Christian faith. These false teachers and ministers have taught others to deny our Lord’s virgin birth, his resurrection, and his ascension. They also have taught others to deny his second coming in which he will judge the wicked and establish his never-ending kingdom wherein righteousness will dwell. They denigrate Scripture by saying it is a compilation of myths, sagas or legends. While they believe that the gospel writers spoke of a man called Jesus— a good teacher who was executed by the Romans— they do not believe him to be the living Lord who rose again from death to life that Easter morn so long ago[2]. As a result, they do not teach a saving faith in Christ because they do not accept him as their Saviour.

Sometime back, the Barna Group conducted a survey where they asked the participants if they agreed with the following six statements:

  1. Absolute moral truth exists;

  2. The Bible is completely accurate in all of the principles it teaches;

  3. Satan is a real being;

  4. A person cannot earn their way into Heaven by trying to be good or by doing good works;

  5. Jesus Christ lived a sinless life on earth;

  6. God is the all-knowing, all powerful creator of the world who still rules the universe today.

Barna found less than one percent of the participants agreed with all six statements.

That is disheartening to say the least because nearly every point mentioned by Barna was once an established teaching of the Christian Church nearly a century ago.

But Barna has not been the first to highlight the growing lack of faith in orthodox Christian teaching.  In 1965, John Stormer warned about the growth of apostasy within the churches in his book entitled None Dare Call It Treason (pp. 131-132) wherein he noted that, “Redbook Magazine, in its August 1961 issue, published an article… based on interviews with 100 students at eight seminaries [which] found, ‘that 56% of… ministerial students do not believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ… that 11% [denied] the divinity of Jesus… that many of the 89% who [affirmed the divinity of Jesus] wanted to define divinity to suit themselves. Belief in the immortality of man ranked as a major belief of only 2% and only 1% were convinced there will be a Second Coming of Christ… Only 29% believe in a real heaven and hell, 46% believe that Jesus ascended physically into heaven as described in [the gospel accounts].’” Rev. Stormer noted parenthetically that the last point revealed a contradiction in that “twice as many reported believing in the Ascension into heaven as believe in heaven.” He then went on to credit “Modernist theologians” for their role in the furtherance of apostasy via their denial of the Bible’s supernatural origins.

Rev. EM Bounds once observed , “The church is distinctly, preeminently, and absolutely a spiritual institution… Her ministers and doctrines have appeal, relevance, and power only when they are channels of the Holy Spirit. It is his indwelling and inspiration that give the church its divine character and accomplish its divine purposes.” And what are those purposes has it been called to carry forth? Bounds supplied the answer: “Its purpose is to regenerate and sanctify the individual, to prepare him by purifying and training him for the high pursuits of eternal life. The church is like a net cast into the sea. The purpose is not to change the sea but to catch the fish… What if fishermen spent all their energies trying by some chemical process to change the essential elements of the sea, vainly hoping to improve the stock of fish? They would never catch any fish! If the church used this method, personal holiness would be impossible, and heaven would be stricken from our creed, life and hope. To attempt to save the world while ignoring the individual is not only Utopian but also destructive in every way.”

Too many so-to-speak Christians have been taken in by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life. They, in essence, love the world and the pleasures found therein. They have rejected St. John’s admonition from his first epistle to, Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever (2:15-17), in favor of a redacted Bible which speaks of an amended Christ, a more inclusive doctrine of salvation, and a universalist understanding of heaven. The truth is that modern Laodicean Christianity practices a meaningless religion fit only to be cast out. Such churches are powerless to successfully proclaim the gospel without the permission of the Holy Ghost who will not assist them in their futile efforts.

Why are so many young people leaving the Laodicean churches of today? Because they have rendered the Christian faith to be nothing but a fruitless exercise. As the apostle Paul noted in his first epistle to the Corinthians, …if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: and if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain (15:14)… And if Christ be not raised (15:17)… then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable (15:18-19). Why then should they follow the dead Christ of myth and legend as taught by the Laodiceans of our day? From the Redbook and Barna Group surveys, we can clearly see that the path of apostasy— as taught by infidels within the church— has indeed led to the wholesale rejection of Biblical Christianity, and this has in turn opened the door to a whole host of pagan cults and practices from man’s ancient past. The early twentieth century writer, G. K. Chesterton once noted that, “When a man ceases to believe in God, he does not believe in nothing. He believes in anything.” And so with the rejection of God comes the worship of all sorts of things and none of them will do the worshiper any good.

If one would have the benefits of the Christian religion, one must recognize that the true Christ of faith is the same as the Christ of history. One does not cancel out the other. To have Christ dwell in one’s heart, one must accept Jesus Christ as the risen Lord— the only begotten Son of God— and then seek God’s pardon for sin in his name. God expects us to come to him in faith believing, not in the faithlessness of unbelief.

Time is short, my friends, and there is no guarantee of success in winning back those who have willingly given themselves over to the service of evil. If we are to have any success, we must present to the lost a clear and consistent gospel message that says what it means and means what it says. But such will not be devoid of difficulty. The Devil and his minions have done much to prepare the ground of their hearts for the bad seed of the world as opposed to the good seed of the Word. They have labored to spread tares among the wheat, bad fish among the good, apostates among the saints, and ravening wolves versus the true pastors and shepherds of our Lord. They have won victory after victory within the various denominations and are now poised to sweep away the last vestiges of sound doctrine within the very near future.

Nevertheless, we must not lose hope. Our Lord proclaimed that the gates of hell shall not prevail against the one true Church. In spite of the seeming triumph of our adversary, we ought to have confidence that our Lord will defeat the forces of darkness. God foresaw the rise of evil; has judged it, and will call an end to it in his time. Our duty is to occupy until he comes for us.

The wretched figment of the modernist church is but the synagogue of Satan. It has no real power to save, and has only the power to destroy those of its membership. God’s wrath will fall upon it much as he poured out his fury on Sodom and Gomorrah. Our job is to call out to the righteous who, like Lot, have had their souls vexed by the things they have witnessed within those churches.

If Christ dwells in us, then we must preach the word: be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables (II St. Timothy 4:2-4).

Without a doubt we are in such times as the apostle Paul has described. If we love the Lord, we will follow his word and commandment. Seek therefore then to be a beacon for the gospel. Spread the true message of Christ to those around you and live as becomes the name “Christian” proving that Jesus Christ does indeed dwell within your heart.

Let us pray,

H

oly and gracious God, grant to us the courage and the wherewithal to spread the truth of the gospel of Christ to those who are as yet in darkness and the shadow of death; that they being so informed might turn unto thee and give thee thanks for the free gift of salvation in that name which is above every name, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

The Islamist group (ISIS) took over Quaragosh, the biggest Christian city in Iraq; 164 men, women and children were beheaded.  People ask where is God?  The real question is where are the people to enforce God’s will.  Pray the people of the world will see Allah for who he is, the Devil.  Pray for those who remain behind that they might find a way to safety.

[1]Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them(Jeremiah 10.2)

[2]The Trilemma of Jack Lewis in Mere Christianity – I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.
