Sunday Report

Today we celebrated All Saints’s Day which superseded the Twenty-Second Sunday after Trinity Sunday.

All Saints’ Day

First notice the word is plural, a great number of saints, all in fact, are remembered today.

In other traditions, All Saints’ Day is known as All Hallows, Day of All the Saints, Solemnity of All Saints, or Feast of All Saints.  It is a fixed day, celebrated on 1 November every year, except not surprisingly by our Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox brethren who celebrate the even on the first Sunday after Pentecost.

Roman Catholics and our Eastern Orthodox friends are talking about people who have attained the beatific vision in Heaven[1].   In the Reformed Church and Anglican Orthodox Church in particular, we regard all true Christian believers as saints[2] and observe All Saints Day to remember all Christians both past and present.

Today we suggest you consider the content of Hymn 243, it will tell you who those saints really are/

I sing a song of the saints of God

I sing a song of the saints of God,

Patient and brave and true,

Who toiled and fought and lived and died

For the Lord they loved and knew.

And one was a doctor, and one was a queen,

And one was a shepherdess on the green;

They were all of them saints of God, and I mean,

God helping, to be one too.

They loved their Lord so dear, so dear,

And his love made them strong;

And they followed the right for Jesus’ sake

The whole of their good lives long.

And one was a soldier, and one was a beast,

And one was slain by a fierce wild priest;

And there’s not any reason, no, not the least,

Why I shouldn’t be one too.

They lived not only in ages past,

There are hundreds of thousands still.

The world is bright with the joyous saints

Who love to do Jesus’ will.

You can meet them in school, or in planes, or at sea,

In church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea;

For the saints of God are just folk like me,

And I mean to be one too.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Foregiveness

The real trouble about the duty of forgiveness is that you do it with all your might on Monday and then find on Wednesday that it hasn’t stayed put and all has to be done over again.

Jack Lewis

The Collected Letters of CS Lewis, Volume III

For the Love of God

Some writers use the word charity to describe not only Christian love between human beings, but also God’s love for man and man’s love for God. About the second of these two, people are often worried. They are told they ought to love God. They cannot find any such feeling in themselves. What are they to do? The answer is the same as before. Act as if you did. Do not sit trying to manufacture feelings. Ask your- self, ‘If I were sure that I loved God, what would I do?’ When you have found the answer, go and do it.

On the whole, God’s love for us is a much safer subject to think about than our love for Him. Nobody can always have devout feelings: and even if we could, feelings are not what God principally cares about. Christian Love, either towards God or towards man, is an affair of the will. If we are trying to do His will we are obeying the commandment, ‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God.’ He will give us feelings of love if He pleases. We cannot create them for ourselves, and we must not demand them as a right. But the great thing to remember is that, though our feelings come and go, His love for us does not. It is not wearied by our sins, or our indifference; and, therefore, it is quite relentless in its determination that we shall be cured of those sins, at whatever cost to us, at whatever cost to Him.

Liberty

I fear the liberties of our country will be buried in the tomb of a great nation.

I have considered the preservation of the constitutional power of the General Government to be the foundation of our peace and safety at home and abroad. I yet believe that the maintenance of the rights and authority reserved to the states and to the people, not only essential to the adjustment and balance of the general system, but the safeguard to the continuance of a free government. I consider it as the chief source of stability to our political system, whereas the consolidation of the states into one vast republic, sure to be aggressive abroad and despotic at home, will be the certain precursor of that ruin which has overwhelmed all those that have preceded it.

If a man will but fast from his sins, he may eat what he pleases.

General Robert E. Lee

Liberty must at all hazards be supported. We have a right to it, derived from our Maker. But if we had not, our fathers have earned and bought it for us, at the expense of their ease, their estates, their pleasure, and their blood.

John Adams

1765

How we interface

Though Christian charity sounds a very cold thing to people whose heads are full of sentimentality, and though it is quite distinct from affection, yet it leads to affection. The difference between a Christian and a worldly man is not that the worldly man has only affections or ‘likings’ and the Christian has only ‘charity’. The worldly man treats certain people kindly because he ‘likes’ them: the Christian, trying to treat every one kindly, finds himself liking more and more people as he goes on—including people he could not even have imagined him- self liking at the beginning.

This same spiritual law works terribly in the opposite direction. The Germans, perhaps, at first ill-treated the Jews because they hated them: afterwards they hated them much more because they had ill-treated them. The more cruel you are, the more you will hate; and the more you hate, the more cruel you will become — and so on in a vicious circle for ever.

Good and evil both increase at compound interest. That is why the little decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance. The smallest good act today is the capture of a strategic point from which, a few months later, you may be able to go on to victories you never dreamed of. An apparently trivial indulgence in lust or anger today is the loss of a ridge or railway line or bridgehead from which the enemy may launch an attack otherwise impossible.

Mere Christianity

Very often what God first helps us towards is not the virtue itself but just this power of always trying again

Jack Lewis

Grace does not run in families. It needs something more than good examples and good advice to make us children of God. They that are born again are not born of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:13). Praying parents should pray night and day that their children may be born of the Spirit.

Refugees or Invasion?

Why should 23-year-old Mohammed work for four decades so that Hans or Fritz across the way can retire at 61 and lie on a beach … Europeans expect Mohammed to become a Swede or a German as if he were some child they had adopted from an exotic country and raised as their own… Muslim migrants are meant to be the retirement plan for an aging Europe. They’re supposed to keep its ramshackle collection of economic policies, its welfare states and social programs rolling along. But they’re more like a final solution. Mohammed is Fritz’s retirement plan. But Mohammed has a very different type of plan. Fritz is counting on Mohammed to work while he relaxes. Mohammed relaxes and expects Fritz to work. Fritz is not related to him and therefore Mohammed sees no reason why he should work to support him. European social democracy reduces society to a giant insurance plan in which money is pooled together. But insurance is forbidden in Islam which considers it to be gambling. European social democracy expects him to bail it out, but to Mohammed, European values are a crime against Islam. Mohammed’s imam will tell him to work off the books because paying into the system is gambling. However taking money out of the system is just Jizya: the money non-Muslims are obligated to pay to Muslims. Under Islamic law, it’s better for Mohammed to sell drugs than to pay taxes. That’s why drug dealing and petty crime are such popular occupations for Salafis in Europe.

It’s preferable to steal from infidels than to participate in the great gamble of the European welfare state.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 256-257, with the Collect first:

ORD we beseech thee to keep thy household the Church in continual godliness; that through thy protection it may be free from all adversities, and devoutly given to serve thee in good works, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Scripture serving as today’s Epistle comes from Revelation of Saint John the Divine, the Seventh Chapter beginning at the Second Verse:

A

ND I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and peoples, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; and cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four living creatures, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

The Holy Gospel for this morning comes from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, the Fifth Chapter, beginning at the First Verse.

J

ESUS seeing the multitudes, went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: and he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their’s is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peace-makers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for their’s is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

L

ORD we beseech thee to keep thy household the Church in continual godliness; that through thy protection it may be free from all adversities, and devoutly given to serve thee in good works, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. 10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (Rev 20:7-10)

            In the early decade of the 1990’s, Jean Raspail, a French journalist, wrote a controversial book entitled, “The Camp of the Saints.” The book was a novel of prophetic dimensions. It quite well articulated historical policies of the French government and people for the post-war years, and drew a wise and accurate prophecy of where those policies would soon lead.  He emphasized the liberal immigration policies of the French government in the last few decades, and then, he drew an amazingly perceptive conclusion as to where these would lead. The French people would be inundated from their own land, their culture (what was left of it) destroyed, and their religion declared ‘verboten’ by Muslim and Near Eastern hordes who flocked, unabated, into France. The French Federal Court banned Mr. Raspail’s book in France – they had not gained a great deal of expertise in ‘political correctness’ at this point so resorted to brute force. But the consequences of keeping one’s culture and religious society pure and undefiled was a lesson that applies to all nations.

            Yesterday was Reformation Day. It signaled a return to Holy Scripture as the sole rule of life for the Christian Church. Today is All Saint’s Day. It had its beginning last evening (at sunset) as All Hollows Eve. Both holi(HOLY)days represent the duties and responsibilities of the saints of God to protect their faith and their culture from ungodly movements such as that of Islam.

            It is distressing to note the compromising attitudes of formerly godly churches surrendering to sins of the flesh such as homosexuality in the wake of the decision of five ungodly judges who happen to be political appointments on the US Supreme Court. Which law takes precedence – God’s or man’s? And listen to the resounding plurality of pulpit voices proclaiming that the Christian Church and Islam “worship the same God after all.” There are a few characteristics of the satanic Allah that do not measure up to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – of you and me. Allah is by no means a god of mercy. He demands total justice with no hope of redemption – and that justice he demands is twisted by a thirst for blood and torture. Allah has no Holy Ghost. He broods alone over the darkness of Hades and the underworld. There is no Holy Ghost to guide and direct the understanding of the Muslim, he, therefore, is left to his own devices, and the deceit of mullahs and imams, to discover the truth of his wretched book.

            Allah has no Son and is, admittedly, incapable of visitation of his presumed creation on earth. It seems, according to the wicked Quran, that Allah began his creation with a clot of blood. Where this blood came from, and what was its DNA, no one knows. But blood has been on Allah’s mind from the beginning and he sheds the blood of innocent and defenseless women and children as a ‘bonus’ of war. Rape and slavery are also a mainstay of this brooding satanic idol. The Quran has the temerity to claim that Christ never died on the cross – that God the Father had someone else (who looked like Jesus) die there in His stead. What a stretch of wicked imagination – that one man should die in the place of Christ when Christ only could have died for all men!

            The sands of the Levant of Syria and Iraq, and a hundred other venues, are turned to crimson from the shed blood of Christian innocents, and countless others – even little children and babies – by a religion where men lack courage to stand against a standing army in the field. A Christian cannot deny his faith, but a Muslim can lie outright to save his skin. So many young children are beheaded because they will not renounce their faith. Satan is a genius, and he has hit upon a religion that comports perfectly with his evil plan to destroy every vestige of God and His Creation on earth. The media and political culture of America make Islam into a sacred cow. You may curse the Christian faith, destroy its Book, and cast all manner of ungodly aspersions against the Lord Jesus Christ, but do not dare to serve bacon in our restaurants, or forbid Muslim prayers in our schools.

            Why do you believe the political forces of America are so solidly behind exalting Islam? It is not because they honor Allah (intentionally), or believe a single Sura of the Quran! It is because Islam is totalitarian and Fascistic. It can be used as a tool for world leaders to finally, they believe, destroy the Church and her Christ! Our Lord Jesus Christ keeps getting in the way of dictatorships around the world. In their struggle to unite into a one world government – compromising its own economic monopolies, religion, and social contract – Jesus is the Stumbling Block. Our Lord asserts an exclusive religion. “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life!” All of the others are willing to compromise on that point, but not Christ! And wherever Christ is, there is the Word of God that seems to overrule, constantly, the schemes of evil men who wish to dominate all others and exalt themselves as gods (like Kim Jong Un of North Korea).

            If you examine carefully the text from Rev 20:7-10, you will learn a very important point. God has always preserved His remnant among the people – even among evil, wicked nations who have forsaken the Lord of their blessings. The remnant is not a large host of souls. In fact, a remnant is the trimmed cloth cut away from a pattern and cast into the dustbin. We see in the end time that the saints of God will amount to no more than a simple CAMP. A Camp is a temporary and remote habitation usually found in wilderness places, and the army would not even consider it a fortress. It is small and not naturally well defended. There will be ONE such camp at the end of time – the Camp of the Saints. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.   Please note that the combined armies of all of the earth are gathered against this small enclave of saints. But with what result?   . . . . fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

            The Army of God is not dependent upon superior materiel and resources, or mighty armaments, or stratagems that are brilliantly conceived, or immaculately arrayed millions standing at arms – the Army of God has One Word sufficient to conquer, and we all know it. The whole Creation was formed by that Word, and the whole Creation shall be consumed with fervent heat by that Word – except those who have accepted the Promise made to Abraham and fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ.

            By the way, reading further in Revelations 20:11, we see that, after the devil that deceived those armies (verse 10) and was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone for ever and ever, then comes the White Throne Judgment! And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.  (Rev 20:11) The Adversary of your soul (and prosecuting attorney) will not be found at that Judgment to bring charges as he did against poor Job!

            God will not place new wine in old bottles, so He takes His new Creation of the elect and places them in a new Heaven and Earth!  1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. (Rev 21:1-4) The Tree of Life will be restored to that Edenic Paradise, and there will be no sorrow, pain, or death for these are passed away with the miseries brought upon Creation by the disobedience of Adam.

            We need not worry about Muslim butchers in that Land, for all that defiles will be shut out.  22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. 23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. 24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. 25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. 26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. 27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.  (Rev 21:22-27) Even mothers who have senselessly aborted their little babies, and found forgiveness in God, shall feel the tender little hand of their child grasping at theirs.

            Here is the most beautiful part of all:  1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: 4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. 5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever(Rev 22:1-5) See the miraculous appearance again of the Tree of Life? That Tree of Life surrounds the River of Life and the streets of the City. Our Lord Jesus Christ is that Tree rejected by Adam! His Word is the River! See, we shall still love and know God’s Word beyond this veil of unknowing.

            Another important point I wish to point out to the saints hearing or reading this sermon: Where is the Holy Name of our Lord found with the saints? It is important to know this for allusions to it are made in other parts of Scripture.   . . . . and his name shall be in their foreheads.  Where is His Name – is it ON the forehead or is it IN the forehead; the frontal lobes of the brain is the portion in which decisions and judgments are made. Simply smearing a name ON our forehead, of having a mark forcibly branded on our foreheads does not change our hearts and minds one bit; but that which we consciously love and accept is inside our souls – not external to them. In actuality, if you are a saint, that blessed Name is already IN your forehead.

            The wicked receive a mark IN their foreheads – not some vile word written on the surface, or a UPC code – but a MARK of decision to follow after evil and to reject the good.  If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb.  (Rev 14:9-10) The sin nature is not forced upon us, but a volition of the mind.

            The Saints of God receive, not a mark, but a seal. Only a King is able to seal a matter, and our King of Kings seals us to Himself. He places His Law in our hearts and His Word in our Minds. Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. (Rev 7:3-4)

            There is a current commercial aired on TV in which the gentleman at the end asks, “What’s in YOUR Wallet?” By the same token, I address the saints who hear or read this message, “What is in your thoughts, mind and heart, friend?”

Sermon – Rev Hap Arnold

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Todays sermon tied the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and talked, as is oft the case, of the need for action, not simply diction.

Before we discuss the propers, I would like to talk a bit about today, All Saints Day.

Roman Catholics and our Eastern Orthodox friends are talking about people who have attained the beatific vision in Heaven[3].   In the Reformed Church and Anglican Orthodox Church in particular, we regard all true Christian believers as saints[4] and observe All Saints Day to remember all Christians both past and present.

So let us consider these words from the Collect:

… knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship, in the mystical body of thy Son Christ our Lord; Grant us grace so to follow thy blessed Saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those unspeakable joys which thou hast prepared for those who unfeignedly love thee…

We acknowledge God has brought us together as one in Him through His Son Jesus Christ, who if we are together is indeed our Lord.  We ask God to give us His Help to follow those who have gone before us in following His Will in the manner in which we live our lives, that we might in the end benefit from His Grace and come to heavenly happiness in eternity with them in His Love.

This seem like a tall order that we might follow a very hard steep and winding trail for a reward we don’t get until we die.  But, that is really the whole point of gaining eternal life; it starts as soon as you accept it.  You don’t wait until you die, you get it now.  So, if you are going to be eternal, you need to start living eternally.  That does not mean you are bullet proof, it means you are evil proof and, equally important – you are accountable for your actions for all eternity.  Like Christ in the Wilderness, if you understand what the Devil is offering, you find it far easier to reject his temptations.  Why?  Because you realize what he offers is of no real value.

Then, we think about real meaning of coming together in one fellowship and communion.  This is a point often misunderstood by those whose Scriptural knowledge is a bit short and whose priorities are out of sync with Scripture and the Word of God.  God calls us to rally around His Colors, His Standard, not ours.  We are not to join others, but to join Him.  Thus, if we join Him, we will be with others who have also joined Him.  We cannot be in fellowship and communion with those who are not following His Colors.

Again, the Collect calls for us to live (that is an action) in a virtuous and godly manner, not to talk about living thusly, but to actually do so, to act in the manner which God wants.

This brings us right into the reading serving as today’s Epistle, the Seventh Chapter of the Revelation of Saint John the Divine.  When all have passed through this veil of tears that need come, the world will be rolled up and discarded.  Precisely how is not our concern, precisely when is not for us to know.  For 285,000 people today is the end of their earth.  But, the earth will stay until all have passed through.  Of the tribe of Israel, 144,000.  Is this a real number or a figure?  It really matters not.  It is a big number, who will be in it?  Then, it may be a small number; still, who will be amongst them?  Yet there are more, enough that no man could number, before God of all nations, and kindreds, and peoples, and tongues standing before the Lamb of God, our Lord and Savior.  Each of these is clothed in white robes having been made white in the blood of the Lamb.  These shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; … the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.  Heaven is a pretty nice place!

While this may or may not be a literal picture of heaven, the only guarantee is you won’t be disappointed.

More than that, our sadness will be gone, our memory of the pain from this veil of tears will be gone.  Our bodies will be perfected.  All will be well with our souls.

That brings us to Matthew’s description of Jesus’ words to his disciples.  Put the important things first.  Jesus’ kingdom is not of this world and if we are truly of Him, then neither is ours. Truly nothing here matters except doing your duty, do what you are supposed to do and all will be well with your soul.  If all is well with your soul, all is truly well.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

The time to act is NOW.  Will you act?  For whom will you act?  Will you count the cost before you act?

Action, not diction, is what counts.  It is by your actions you are known.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

All Saints’ Sunday

superseding the

Twenty-Second Sunday after Trinity

Today we celebrate the feast of All Saints honoring the memory of those whose works advanced the gospel message throughout all the world. Now some may ask, ”Who can be rightly called a saint?” Our answer should be clear and straightforward: “Anyone who loves the Godhead and is obedient to his will is a saint.” In light of that response, it should be apparent that the saints of God also come in a variety of packages— young and old, rich and poor— and can be found in every corner of the world where the light of the gospel has been proclaimed and accepted.

With that in mind, let us turn in our bibles to Chapter 7 of Revelation where the apostle John saw a multitude standing before the throne of God dressed in white robes and bearing palm branches. While the apostle was informed that such were those who had come out of the great tribulation, we know from our reading of Scripture that all who are born-again of the Holy Ghost will likewise be vested in the same before God (7:9-17). Ergo, all so described are properly called saints of the most high God (Daniel 7:18, 27).

Now one might assume that the simple bible way of explaining the specifics of this issue would suffice. But such would be a mistake because there are churches that have a longstanding set of rubrics governing the topic of sainthood. In spite of human tradition, it ought to behoove each of us to examine the basic biblical characteristics of a saint.

To begin with, fervent praying is a characteristic of sainthood. Our Lord Jesus Christ gave us some specific instructions about praying (see St. Matthew 6:5-15). Rev. EM Bounds pointed out faith and prayer are supremely important to the believing Christian as he associated true faith with an active prayer life. He once wrote that, “When we pray, give us this day our daily bread, we are…shutting tomorrow out of our prayer. We do not live in tomorrow but in today. We do not seek tomorrow’s grace or tomorrow’s bread. They thrive best, and get the most out of life, who live in the living present…Victory today is the assurance of victory tomorrow. Our prayers need to be focused on today.”

Bounds identified the two principal foes of our faith as being doubt and fear because they will interrupt our prayer life and limit the power of God to work therein owing to our lack of faith. According to Bounds, “A simple, confiding faith, living day by day and casting its burden on the Lord each hour of the day will dissipate fear, drive away misgiving and deliver from doubt… Faith grows by reading and meditating upon the Word of God. Most, and best of all, faith thrives in an atmosphere of prayer.”

Bounds also urged us as Christians to trust in God for his provision; to earnestly desire of him that he provide for a particular need or want which is within his will for us; to show fervency or strength in praying; to be persistent in our praying; to understand that our praying affects our conduct and character; to be obedient to the will of God; to be vigilant in prayer; and to read the Scriptures because in them we have a record of the prayer life and successes of those notable mentioned personalities whom God called as his followers. As he noted in his famous book on Prayer, “The Word of God is made effectual and operative by the process and practice of prayer;” for, “When prayer is a stranger [in God’s house], then it ceases to be God’s house at all.”

Secondly, it should apparent to all that a saint is a person who trusts in the atoning work of our Lord Jesus Christ. A faithful and true Christian has accepted without equivocation the sacrifice of our Lord on the cross, and has confessed his or her sins to God the Father in the name of Jesus Christ. That acceptance of his undeserved favor, or grace, sets such a person apart from those who believe that they have to earn their salvation through works (see Ephesians 2:1-22).

Thirdly, a saint is one who is sealed of God. Consider the following passages:

Now he which stablished us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

II Corinthians 1:21-22

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world… In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.

Ephesians 1:3-4, 13

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Ephesians 4:30

God has sealed all who are his via the workings of the Holy Spirit. As a result, they have been set apart as his saints and are co-heirs with Christ in his kingdom. In the future, the Antichrist will mark those who come into his fold, but there will be a terrible penalty for all who accept such. For to receive the mark of the Beast is to receive an everlasting sentence of damnation which cannot be undone. Therefore a godly saint will avoid all marks of the world, the flesh and the devil, keeping himself, or herself, solely unto the Lord who bought him (see I Corinthians 6:19, 20; I Thessalonians 5:22).

Fourthly, a saint will minister to others as part of his or her Christian witness (see Hebrews 6:10). An important part of ministry and witness will require us to do several things such as keeping God’s word (see St. Jude 3); seeking after God’s perfect will (see Romans 12:2); judging righteously those who are within the body of Christ via our exercise of godly discernment (see I Corinthians 6:1-2); and by seeking the whole counsel of God via our reading of the Scriptures just as the Bereans did (Acts 17:11). In these and other ways, a godly saint will be able to effectively minister to those around him.

Finally, a saint will trust in God’s provision as he has promised not to forsake us in this life (see Psalm 37:28). In providing for his own, God will gather us and keep us because he counts us as precious to him (see Psalm 50:5; I Samuel 2:9; Psalm 116:15). Our Lord Jesus Christ will continue to intercede for us (Romans 8:27-30) until that day when he comes to bring us to our eternal home in the kingdom which he has prepared for all his saints (St. Matthew 25:34).

And so there can be little doubt that every person who has been so called and so empowered by God may safely be called a saint. You do not need a certificate from some earthly body to affirm your bona fides with the Lord for such would be merely a confirmation of an already known fact. God has inscribed the names of his saints in his Book of Life. And the Bible tells us that he knew us before the foundations of the world were laid, and has endowed each of us with gifts and duties on his behalf. And because God’s love for us has been manifested to us in the atoning work of Jesus Christ, let us therefore live in obedience to his will, and purpose in our hearts to daily keep our eyes fixed upon him, awaiting his appearing when our citizenship in his kingdom will be made manifest.

Thus in answer to our initial question regarding who is a saint? We should understand that every regenerated person in Christ Jesus today is just as much a saint as any from antiquity, and you have God’s word written which confirms it (see Ephesians 1:3-14).

Let us pray,

F

ather, we beseech thee to bless us, thy saints, in this mortal life; that through our witness, those who are as yet unsaved might come to a saving knowledge of thy dear Son, Jesus Christ; for this we ask in his most precious name. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

The forces of evil are strong in Pakistan.  The force of God stronger.  Pray for our Christian family there.

Ernest Jacob

Presiding Bishop Pakistan

Serbia

Rev. Igor Djurcik leader of Anglican Orthodox Church in Serbia asks us to pray for his students. He has excellent young people in Belgrade who are having services and classes on the Bible.

Atlanta

Bishop Jerry was in Atlanta, preaching at a church who has in attendance many members of another church founded in 1887 that has closed.  Many of those are older, in their late 70s and early 80s.  Please pray they will see this is a parish where they can be one with other believers.  Please pray the Holy Ghost might enter more fully into their hearts so that they might see their way to come together.

Diocese of Virginia

Saint Joseph of Arimathea Anglican Orthodox Church is under a lot of stress.  We all are, but they need even more prayer.  Rev Roger Jessup, their wonderful minister, had to retire as he was so pressed by the duties of a primary care giver, in addition to all the worries of this world.  Pray for trust in God for each member of the parish and for them to find economic relief.

Armed Forces & Contractors

Dustin (Middle East), Kristyna Thomas (Army – Fort Lewis, Washington), Airman Donny Patton (USAF – Hulbert Field, Florida), Jordan Brown (USMC – Fleet Marine Force – Pacific), Trevor Jennings (USAF – KC-10 Boom Operator – New Jersey), Trevor Di Marco (USN – Whidbey Island, EF-18 Pilot), Kurt Thomas (USN – Camp Foster, Okinawa), Ethan (US Army Airborne – Southwest Asia)

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

The Islamist group (ISIS) took over Quaragosh, the biggest Christian city in Iraq; 164 men, women and children were beheaded.  People ask where is God?  The real question is where are the people to enforce God’s will.  Pray the people of the world will see Allah for who he is, the Devil.  Pray for those who remain behind that they might find a way to safety.

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of “Separation of Church and State” in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

Education

Thomas Dabney is attending Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, to finish his Bachelor’s Degree.  Please pray for Thomas to focus on education and do his very best at school.

Various Special Requests

This is a horrible time for the people of India, Christians in particular; they are having problems with Hunger, Bank Closings, Transportation and Schools not functioning.  Pray for the Leaders and Members of our Church in Eluru Andhra Pradesh. Pray their basic needs will be met and God will be close to them in this time of need.

We ask that you pray, please ask God that the Holy Ghost might give you insight into how you might make the lives of your friends and family better.  Remember helping others is not just those who you don’t know!

[1]In Roman and Orthodox theology, the beatific vision (Latin: visio beatifica) is the ultimate direct self communication of God to the individual person. A person possessing the beatific vision reaches, as a member of redeemed humanity in the communion of saints, perfect salvation in its entirety, i.e. heaven. The notion of vision stresses the intellectual component of salvation, though it encompasses the whole of human experience of joy, happiness coming from seeing God finally face to face and not imperfectly through faith. (1 Cor 13:11–12) – This last little part in italics is the only portion of the concept that is actually in Scripture.

It is related to the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox belief in theosis, and is seen as the reward for Christians in the afterlife.  All concepts not found in Scripture.
