Second Sunday after Christmas

Sunday Report

Today was the Second Sunday after Christmas.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Who is Christmas about?

I am the bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness and are dead. This the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

St. John 6:48-51

To him that overcometh I will give a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it(Revelation 2:17). What can be more a man’s own than this new name which even in eternity remains a secret between God and him? And what shall we take this secrecy to mean? Surely, that each of the redeemed shall forever know and praise some one aspect of the Divine beauty better than any other creature can. Why else were individuals created, but that God, loving all infinitely, should love each differently? And this difference, so far from impairing, floods with meaning the love of all blessed creatures for one another, the communion of the saints. If all experienced God in the same way and returned Him an identical worship, the song of the Church triumphant would have no symphony, it would be like an orchestra in which all the instruments played the same note.

The Problem of Pain

Finding God

When you come to knowing God, the initiative lies on His side. If He does not show Himself, nothing you can do will enable you to find Him. And, in fact, He shows much more of Himself to some people than to others—not because He has favourites, but because it is impossible for Him to show Himself to a man whose whole mind and character are in the wrong condition. Just as sunlight, though it has no favourites, cannot be reflected in a dusty mirror as clearly as in a clean one.

You can put this another way by saying that while in other sciences the instruments you use are things external to yourself (things like microscopes and telescopes), the instrument through which you see God is your whole self. And if a man’s self is not kept clean and bright, his glimpse of God will be blurred—like the Moon seen through a dirty telescope. That is why horrible nations have horrible religions: they have been looking at God through a dirty lens.

Mere Christianity

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

Psalm 4:8

A good man obtaineth favour of the LORD: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.

Proverbs 12:2

Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

Isaiah 5:21

The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.

Ezekiel 22:29

I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

St. John 10:11

To a good man God gives not only wisdom and knowledge, but joy; he is satisfied in himself with the testimony of his conscience and the assurances of God’s favor.

Matthew Henry

17th and 18th century English pastor and author

Let us beware of any doctrine which interferes with the priesthood of Christ. Any system of religion which teaches that we need other mediators besides Jesus… What greater folly can be conceived than… to put our souls in the hands of [others both living and deceased] when we have such a priest as Jesus Christ in heaven?

The merit of our Lord becomes ours by faith. Through him all that believe are justified… Faith is, therefore, the acknowledgment of our own inability and the admission of our need of another’s ability. Faith links us to Christ and is the means of our appropriation of his merit. The full meaning of faith in the New Testament is trust.

If men believe that God is “dead” and that they do not owe their Creator supreme love and loyalty, there is no deterrent to keep them from dabbling in the occult, which is the natural expression of a lawless spirit… Spiritual lawlessness, in which occultism and false religionism flourish, goes hand in hand with moral lawlessness… Occult revival starts and prospers in a morally and spiritually sick society.

Power and law are not synonymous. In truth they are frequently in opposition and irreconcilable. There is God’s Law from which all Equitable laws of man emerge and by which men must live if they are not to die in oppression, chaos and despair. Divorced from God’s eternal and immutable Law, established before the founding of the suns, man’s power is evil no matter the noble words with which it is employed or the motives urged when enforcing it. Men of good will, mindful therefore of the Law laid down by God, will oppose governments whose rule is by men, and if they wish to survive as a nation they will destroy the government which attempts to adjudicate by the whim of venal judges.

Al Qaeda and ISIS are not “negative” protest movements formed in response to our foreign policy. That’s a foolish self-centered idea held by foolish self-centered Westerners. Al Qaeda and ISIS are “positive” movements that seek to achieve larger religious goals entirely apart from us. Islamic terrorists are not responding to us. They are responding to the Koran and to over a thousand years of history… ISIS can’t defeat us with terror attacks. The only hope for an enduring Islamic victory over America is through the rise of domestic groups that pledge allegiance to the Caliphate. ISIS can’t invade America. It has to be invited in. That’s what our immigration policy does… Islamic terrorists can’t defeat us no matter how many planes they fly into buildings. But they can and will defeat us if they continue landing planes at JFK and disembarking thousands and tens of thousands of settlers who will serve as a base population for their war against America. Muslim immigration is the Islamic State’s only hope for victory over America.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The propers for today are found on Page 106-107, with the Collect first:

The Second Sunday after Christmas Day.

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY God, who hast poured upon us the new light of thine incarnate Word; Grant that the same light enkindled in our hearts may shine forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The reading for the Epistle comes from the Book of Isaiah, the Sixty-First Chapter beginning at the First Verse:

T

HE Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

The Holy Gospel came from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, the Second Chapter beginning at the Nineteenth Verse:

W

HEN Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life. And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judæa in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: and he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

We are oft fortunate to get copies of Bishop Jerry’s sermon notes.  Today is one of those Sundays.  Today’s sermon starts off with the collect, and like always, it will give you a lot to consider in your heart.

The Gospel

St. Matthew ii. 19.

            Just as all mortals born of woman are destined for the grave and good as dead at birth, there is a second death of far greater consequence; that death is unto eternal damnation. This is the death suffered by King Herod (the Great) after his horrific murders of the innocents at Bethlehem. Herod was a vain and pompous politician who murdered even his own son out of coveted jealousy. The Jewish historian, Josephus states, “many slaughters followed the prediction of a new king“; and is more manifestly referred to by Macrobins, a Heathen author, who reports, that “when Augustus heard, that among the children under two years of age, whom Herod king of the Jews ordered to be slain in Syria, that his son was also killed, said, it was better to be Herod’s hog than his son.”

            Based on traditional computations, it appears most likely to me that Herod died when our Lord Jesus Christ (sojourning in Egypt) was about three years of age. Herod died a horrible death, not in God’s vengeance for the murder of the innocents in Bethlehem, but as a sign of terror to any who would be as evil as Herod. There will be ample torture in the first five minutes of Hell to atone for his cruel murder of the innocents. His death was unusually gross as was that of his son later mentioned in Acts. Josephus says that King Herod died of an extreme condition (probably kidney failure) which caused his whole flesh to burn and itch interminable, and Josephus further states that his “private parts were eaten by maggots.” The text simply says that Herod, and those who sought the death of baby Jesus, were dead. Herod’s son Antipater was complicit with his father in the carnage at Bethlehem and even Antipater was killed by his father five days before Herod’s death. At the final moments of his cursed life, Herod changed his will to allow his younger son, Archelaus to take power in Judea. He, too, was unmatched for wickedness.

            The death of Herod is profoundly informative to those who would live an evil and wicked life. Though all who are born into this world are subject to the first death, woe to those who are destined to die TWICE. As Jude says: trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots. (Jude 1:12) Being plucked up by the roots means there is no further source for life and all hope is forlorn. We read, as well in Hebrews: And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment. (Heb 9:27) Some men go to their graves with the second judgment a foregone conclusion – such was Herod. Those who persevere in Christ to the end have no need of worry of that second death: He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. (Rev 2:11)

            Egypt, prophetically speaking, represents the land of sin. We all are born in Egypt (sin) and need to be brought out by the strong, outstretched arm of the Lord. Like Joseph, Jesus was taken into Egypt to escape the treachery of the rulers in Judea. Joseph, son of Jacob, too, was carried into Egypt for the sake of being the savior of his brothers who had sold him into bondage. Jesus was kept secure in Egypt for a time in order to save all who will believe and persevere. But we are never to make our permanent home in bondage to sin (Egypt). We must be liberated by that precious blood of Christ!

            There is a wonderfully powerful painting entitled on exhibit at the Louvre in Paris entitled, Rest on the Flight into Egypt, by Orazio Gentileschi, (1628) that depicts the Virgin Mary seated at the feet of the Sphinx. In the distance behind are the shadowed pyramids, and before the scene are Joseph and his donkey resting beside the only fire light. The light is reflecting from before the Sphinx and around the Holy Family; but to the rear of the scene and behind the Sphinx, the wilderness recedes in darkness. I take the meaning to portray the only Light of the World resting amid the sins of the world (Egypt), and all of the darkness of the past receding from His presence. I was only a child when my father took me to see this great work of art, but its memory is emblazoned on my soul.

            We should never get comfortable in our sins, but feel an undying urge to leave them behind by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. In due time, and Angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph to direct him to leave Egypt and return to Israel. Later, he would direct Joseph to avoid Judea due to the evil Archelaus ruling in the stead of his deceased father. Both were equally evil and Herod Archelaus would suffer a fate no less gruesome than that of his father. (Acts 12:21-23).

            So Joseph circumvented the area of danger and proceeded to Nazareth. Nazareth means ‘guarded.’ It is situated in a pristine little valley surrounded by hills. It appears as a rose nestled among the rugged hills of Galilee. Nazareth was a secluded little hamlet that was looked down upon by the more ‘sophisticated’ urban dwellers of Jerusalem. That which the world rejects most often is precisely what the Lord approves. And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. (Verse 23) Nazarene means ‘separated one, or anointed.’ Our Lord was certainly separated from the sinful world for the purpose of our salvation, and He was anointed for the task by His Heavenly Father. Christ was not the separated, or anointed, one because He dwelt in Nazareth. He was anointed and separated to be our Redeemer before the foundations of the world.

            Our constant hope and assurance is in God to bring about good for us from the most reviling of evil hearts. Though we may suffer a short time of immeasurable hurt from the world, our Lord offers a love and joy that surpasses all understanding for a period of all eternity. And never mind our desires to exact vengeance on those who persecute and despitefully use us – that remains the realm and domain of a Holy God.

            I tremble at the thought of the price that God will exact on those demons of the Islamic faith who are beheading innocents today in the same country as Herod before them! Let not our souls be soiled with the imaginations of such evil. Trust in God, and that will be sufficient.

Sermon – Rev Jack Arnold

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon ties together the propers, that is to say the prayer and readings for this week.  Due to calendar considerations, we do not oft get to celebrate the Second Sunday after Christmas as there are only 12 days in Christmastide, but this is one of those years!

Consider these words from the Collect, “…God, who hast poured upon us the new light of thine incarnate Word; Grant that the same light enkindled in our hearts may shine forth in our lives…”

First, note God has given us the New Light of Jesus Christ in the world and in our lives as the Word Incarnate, or the Word in the Flesh.  We did not earn it He gave it to us!  Gave, as in we did nothing to deserve it. It is a gift of God’s wonderful Grace!  However once we have it, that is if we really have it and not just say we have it, we must do something with the Word, hence the second part that His Word might shine in our lives.  We ask the light of the Word will take root in our hearts and shine forth as action in our lives.  That is to say that our lives will act as a window to the Word, not a closed door. We want the window to show our lives have been renewed by Christ’s presence to encourage others to follow Him as well. In order for that to be so, we have to act upon the Scriptures and Christ’s teachings, and do our very best, and not just say it, to follow Him.

The reading used for the Epistle is not an Epistle as such, but a portion of the Book of Isaiah, one of the Old Testament books filled with New Testament ideas and thoughts.  Without the freedom that Jesus brings us, we are prisoners of the darkest prison, our heart separated from God.  If we embrace His Gift of freedom, we are free, truly free, with eternal life starting as soon as we accept it.   In the reading, Isaiah says what we should all be saying, The Lord has selected us to pass on His Good Tidings to all, to tell the world the Good News of the Lord Jesus!  To comfort those in need, to bring happiness where there is heaviness, to talk of the Glory of God!  Good News indeed! Jesus will be proclaiming liberty to us, the former captives of the sin that would bring us to a final death. Instead of death, He proclaims light and light to all the hearts who accept Him. This is absolutely terrific news indeed!

On the surface, in the Gospel, Matthew is just relating the historical fact of Joseph being told to go back into Israel with Mary and Jesus, that all was safe for the time being.  Yet, there is more.  The verses also recall the threat to Jesus’ life from Herod and sends Joseph and his family to take up residence in Nazareth in fulfillment of the prophecy that the King of Kings would be called a Nazarene.

So what of us?  How do we fit in to all this?

We are to spread the light unto the world, to be beacons, directing the people of the World to follow Christ and not the World. We are the lamp bearers, the torch bearers, bringing the light of Scripture unto the darkest places. We are like the light of Galadriel, which was given to Frodo in Lord of the Rings, that it might be a light “unto the darkest places.” Indeed this world is dark, a lot like the world of Mordor, also from Lord of the Rings. Even when we despair and all seems hopeless, with Christ and the Holy Ghost in our hearts, we can ride out amidst the darkness of the world and triumph over what seems like overwhelming odds, when the evil folk outnumber the good folk. With this rallying to our King, we can defeat anything that evil throws at us. We know in the end our side wins for all eternity. We have the Holy Spirit to comfort and guide us in difficult times and the wonderful guide of Scripture to guide us.

So too shall Scripture be a light for us and others in the darkest times and places on this planet. Christ is the great guiding star, like the North Star for sailors of old to navigate by. So too shall we navigate by Christ as our great guiding star. If we hold the light up, we shall never fall and stumble. But if we do not hold it up, we will fall and stumble. So the obvious solution to our problems when we are troubled is to turn back and hold up the light to light our way.

That is to say, to return to the Scriptures and His Word and consult Him for guidance and not look for true guidance from the heart of man. Christ will show us the way.  But, for us to find The Way, we must not only look for it, but listen when He delivers and see when He points.  For that to happen, we must let His Word take root in our hearts, and to fully take root, we must act upon the Scriptures daily.

In order to have it take root, we must be opened to His Word and not shut and deaf to Him.   He cannot come in if we will not let him, so we must open our hearts and minds to Him.  That is the mission of the Holy Ghost, to enter into our hearts to give us understanding, to make our hearts receptive to His Will, to inspire us to do His Will in a manner which will be effective.  Our Lord will free us from ourselves if we open the door, so we must be willing and ready to accept Him. We have to be ready, willing and able to receive Him and to spread His Word, to have a true solid, Christian faith.

In order to be of help to others who would come to Christ, we must walk the walk besides talking the talk; we must not be as hypocrites, saying one thing but doing another. We do not want to be like the Pharisees of old, with their lavish prayers and gestures in the public. But we must be like the publican who would not so much as lift His eyes up onto the heavens. We must have a humble, hearty and contrite spirit, to spread the Word of the Lord to those who need to hear it most.

The time has come to show the light unto the world. The time has come to choose God or Satan. The choice is like those in the Lord of the Rings[1]. Do we choose the Light, like the Men of the West and Aragorn of Gondor, or do we choose the forces of Darkness, of Mordor and their allies? Who shall we choose? Our actions shall show our hearts. “For where your heart is, there shall your treasure be also.”

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

Second Sunday after Christmas

3 January 2016

The Second Sunday after Christmas Day.

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY God, who hast poured upon us the new light of thine incarnate Word; Grant that the same light enkindled in our hearts may shine forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle
Isaiah lxi. 1.

Sometimes we don’t realize that the manifestation of Jesus Christ was not at the beginning of his earthly ministry.  Sure, we have the time period from his birth to the Epiphany where we read of prophecies specific to his first Advent being fulfilled.  We really don’t read much about Christ’s early life, other than the encounter in the temple when he was twelve.

Our Gospel reading gives us another couple of prophesy fulfilled.  Mary, Joseph, and the Christ child leave Bethlehem to flee the homicidal wrath of Herod. Herod tries to murder the Savior by having all male children under the age of two killed in the area around Bethlehem. {Jer. 31:15}

They go to Egypt. Another set of prophecies fulfilled.  “Out of Egypt have I called my son.” {Hosea 11:1}.  The final prophecy in our brief Gospel passage concerns the name ‘Nazarene’.

In this is said to be fulfilled what was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. This term or phrase may be looked upon, (1.) As a man of honor and dignity, though primarily it signifies no more than a man of Nazareth; there is an allusion or mystery in speaking it, speaking Christ to be, [1.] The Man, the Branch, spoken of, Isa. 11:1. The word there is Netzar, which signifies either a branch, or the city of Nazareth; in being denoted from that city, he is declared to be that Branch.  When we read Branch then we can find reference to a stem, branch or root as written in several of the Old Testament prophetical books. We can also reference ‘branch’ as something to which the Gentile would be grafted into, the Branch is Jesus, His adopted sons and daughters {the Gentiles} would be grafted into this Branch to become sons and daughters of God.  What a wonderful promise!

The Gospel St. Matthew ii. 19.

In a brief couple of passages from the Bible this day we can mine a whole set of sermons. We can read of the revealing of the Christ child to the Gentiles [us]. That event is marked by the Epiphany, observed on the 6th of January, exactly twelve days of Christmas. From this time forward we begin to count down to the forty days of Lent which culminate in the death, burial, and glorious resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at Easter time.

I remember as a child growing up in an evangelical church that did not follow any form of a church calendar how confusing it was to go from Christmas to Easter in only four or five months.

We went from a little baby to an adult dying on a rude and rough cross, but what happened in between?

When a church follows a church calendar there is so much more thought and lessons given to the mission and ministry of Christ. We understand from the season of Advent the unfolding of the prophecies of the ages. Then to the season of Christmastide and that Gift given by our God and Creator, the once and sufficient sacrifice for our sins, Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Then we begin the period of Epiphany and the Sundays following as the scripture gives us a picture of the universal or catholic nature of God’s plan for His creations’ salvation.

Now a solemn period of Lent, forty days of reflection on the real meaning of the Advent. Finally the greatest act of sacrifice, God gives His Son for our redemption.  He becomes the Lamb of God, but God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

In the Anglican Orthodox Church we observe a monthly communion service. This helps us to hold a more special regard to the Holy Supper, rather than it become so common as to lose all of the rich meaning and message.  We find in a less frequent observation of the Holy Supper gives a time to reflect on the true Gift of God, the WORD, the BREAD of LIFE.  We do not worship the elements, the creatures of bread and wine, no we worship the King they represent. We worship the once and for all sacrifice, once given, for the salvation of many.

Every Sunday is a new beginning. Every Sunday is a “mini” resurrection. Every Sunday should be looked upon as a way to face the onslaught of the world, flesh and the devil. We need to feed upon the Word, we need to refresh ourselves at the Fount of Living Water. We need to know that because He lives we can face tomorrow.

God gives us a gift of life every day, as some say that is why it is called ‘the present’.   Let us endeavor to do the Lord’s work, let us worship Him with our labor, let us bring our gifts to His Kingdom, which has no end.   Amen.

Let us pray:

F

ather, Lord God Almighty, we ask that you endue us with your Holy Spirit. Give us a thirst and a desire to do thy will here at this present. Give us the strength, knowledge and right mind to be aware of any opportunity to further the Kingdom. This we ask in the Name of your Son our Savior, the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.     Amen.

L

IGHTEN our darkness, we beseech Thee, O Lord; and by Thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night season; for the love of Thy only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

G

IVE us light in the night season, we beseech Thee, O Lord, and grant that our rest may be without sin, and our waking to Thy service; that we may come in peace and safety to the waking of the great day; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Second Sunday after Christmas

In Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthian he writes, But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them (II Corinthians 4:3-4). We also have his witness from his first epistle to that same church wherein he wrote: For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent… hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? (1:18-20) All of which was in harmony with our Lord’s offering of thanks to the Father when he said: I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes (St. Matthew 11:25).

The Bible tells us in other places that God’s truth has been hidden from the worldly and profane. In the Book of Daniel we read … and none of the wicked shall understand (12:10b). In Colossians, the apostle Paul noted that the mystery of God; and of the Father, and of Christ was hidden in Christ (2:2-3) for as Matthew Henry noted, “The treasures of wisdom are hidden not from us, but for us, in Christ.”

Nevertheless, the unregenerate have time and again sought to form an attachment to our Lord but not for their redemption. No, their purpose is entirely sinister in nature. The Bible has warned us that since the beginning of the Church, the wicked have sought to use their membership within the body of Christ to bring in all sorts of false teachings (St. Matthew 24:4-5, 11). In our modern world, they have been peddling the false doctrine of inclusivity, or that all persons regardless of their faith in Christ will be accepted of God at the last. But such is a fatal assumption that does not measure up to God’s standard. The inclusive nature of salvation is limited to those who have embraced God’s only begotten Son in agreement with Scripture which explicitly states, …for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved and that name is Jesus Christ (Acts 4:10-12). The Bible clearly teaches that without Christ Jesus, God considers the unregenerate dead already even though they are as yet vertical and breathing in the flesh.

Consider the words of St. Paul who wrote, For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive (I Corinthians 15:22); And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins: wherein in time past ye walked according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh… and were by nature the children of wrath… (Ephesians 2:1-3). In sum, those who are merely Christian in name only possess no capacity to do works that are pleasing to God because they do not have the Spirit of God within them. As the apostle Paul noted in Romans 8:8-9, So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Hear again those words from Romans 8:9, Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. I hear from time to time the nonsense that, “God loves everyone and will not cast any ‘good’ person into Hell.” Yet such begs the question: “If that be true, then why did God offer up his only begotten Son on that rude cross?” Those who are born again of the Holy Ghost understand that our Lord came to save sinners, not those who consider themselves good apart from his atoning work. The reference to an unbeliever as being “good” is nowhere found within the pages of Scripture; and even our Lord said that there is none good, save one, that is, God (St. Luke 18:19).

Thus, the notion that a profane person may be thought of as “good” falls to pieces when viewed through the lens of Scripture because such is based on a subjective appraisal which the profane and the unregenerate have applied to themselves and their associates. Satan has deluded them, and in turn he hopes that they too will delude others within the Church.

As born-again believers in Jesus Christ, we recognize that only God sets the standards for morality. When we say something is good, we say so based not upon our understanding, but upon the word of God. Hell is full of those who did what was right in their own eyes (Judges 21:25): who viewed themselves as being righteous, good and holy by their own efforts (Revelation 3:17). We may safely refer to such behavior as the way of Cain and is so-called because Cain— and others like him— rejected God’s standards and set them aside for those of his own choosing (St. Jude 3-19).

The wise, the prudent, the scribe, the Pharisee, the Sadducee, and the Herodian are all fit examples of those who would use their knowledge and wisdom to further themselves rather than to advance the word of God. Our Lord harshly rebuked those who lived in the towns of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum as they had failed to embrace him based upon his mighty works. While they were willing to accept his gifts, they were not willing to accept them as the sign that he was, and remains, God’s Messiah, the Saviour foretold by the prophets (St. Matthew 11:20-24).

Today, the wise can be found within the body of Christ serving in various capacities. They might be seminary doctors, bishops, priests, deacons or lay people. And like those of Lord’s earthly ministry, they too are his enemies through their rejection of him as the Christ, the only begotten of the Father. They have also rejected his gospel of salvation because they are enamored with “another Jesus”— which is Antichrist— and “another gospel”— which is the false gospel of perdition (see Galatians 1:6-9). They will not communicate the truth about our Lord because such will run counter to their ecumenical predilections. Satan has been quite successful in his use of ecumenism to lure the unsuspecting into his fold. His agents employ words like “compromise” or “dialogue” which have the appearance of wisdom, piety and open-mindedness. As the Rev. Douglas Wilson once observed, “Christians who ‘dialogue’ with those of other faiths are using their faith as a branch upon which to perch lightly while they survey and appreciate all the other options… governed by this approach, Christianity is a prospective; it is not truth.”

Satan has never missed an opportunity to deceive humanity, especially when there is a chance of upsetting the faith of those who have been regenerated in Christ Jesus. In more recent times, Satan has employed the unequal yoke of ecumenical associations as a weapon of mass deception. Through these seemingly harmless enterprises, he has won over many weak or carnal Christians by convincing them through his agents within the mainline churches that it is God’s will for them to “compromise” and “dialogue” with those outside the body of Christ apart from a sound Christian witness. But compromise by its nature will require at least one party to give up something in the supposed hope of gaining something else. And what are the usual and expected items to be sacrificed by Christians in any compromise with the infidel? In every case they are the tenets of sound Christian doctrine.

Lucifer desires “compromise” and “dialogue” because he wants to replace the unity of all under our Lord Jesus Christ with a unity of all under his rule and authority (see II Corinthians 6:14-18 and Revelation 13:1-18). Eventually, all who reject the one true Christ of Scripture will worship the Dragon and the Beast (Revelation 13:1-7).

Folks, biblical doctrines matter, for it is through them that our relationship with the Godhead and our fellowship as Christians is affirmed and sealed. Sound biblical doctrines have been paid for not only in the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, but in the blood of countless Christian martyrs who stood up for the truth of God’s word in the face of all sorts of persecutions. If we have any understanding of the truth of Jesus Christ, we ought to be filled with thanks to God for the sacrifice of those who went before us in the faith. In that light, should we not exercise great care in preserving what has been handed down to us? Should we not resist the Devil and his pernicious followers who are merely wolves in sheep’s clothing peddling their false gospel of inclusion? (St. Matthew 7:15) Absolutely!

It is important for each of us as born-again believers to resist the temptation to follow after those whose earthly credentials have given them a figment of godly wisdom, but whose hearts are the same as those of the scribes and Pharisees of our Lord’s day. Just as those evil men hid behind their monikers of piety and religion, so do their contemporaries within the Christian Church. The modernists are ashamed of the risen Lord whose name they bear because his true nature does not fit within their jaded and compromised definition of the Christian faith. We must ever be watchful and on our guard against their offers of “compromise” and “dialogue”. You can count on their master sending them to us, and so we must be ready at all times having donned our spiritual armor.

We need to know what is in our bibles and not what is in the latest book by “Rev./Mr. or Ms. So-in-So.” We need to keep our hearts focused on the truth of God’s word written and not on the pronouncements of “Bishop This-or-That.” We need to hear the truth of God’s word from a believing minister and not sit Sunday after Sunday in a church where God’s word is twisted and tortured by “Rev./Pastor Mr. or Ms. Such-in-Such” who would not know the living Christ if he suddenly appeared before him (or her).

It is my hope that each of you will seek to develop a lively faith in Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord. That you will devote time out of your day to Bible study and prayer. That you will seek to live in obedience to God’s will as found within the pages of Scripture. And if you have not found a Bible-believing church, that you will do so and soon. “Tomorrow is promised to no one” as the old saying goes. Our Lord could return at any time.

And in light of that, I admonish each of you to be prepared so that you are not caught unawares. Avoid the web of lies that has been spun by Satan’s wise men and scribes. Keep to God’s word written and steer clear of all who will not follow it. And may the God of Peace bless and keep you all in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Let us pray,

A

lmighty and most merciful Father, who has given the free gift of salvation to all who believe on thine only begotten Son; keep us from all deception, and give us hearts to resist until the end; so that at the last, we need not be ashamed to stand before thy Son and give an account of our lives in thy service; for this we ask in the name of Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

The Islamist group (ISIS) took over Quaragosh, the biggest Christian city in Iraq; 164 men, women and children were beheaded.  People ask where is God?  The real question is where are the people to enforce God’s will.  Pray the people of the world will see Allah for who he is, the Devil.  Pray for those who remain behind that they might find a way to safety.

Pray their basic needs will be met and God will be close to them in this time of need.

We ask that you pray, please ask God that the Holy Ghost might give you insight into how you might make the lives of your friends and family better.  Remember helping others is not just those who you don’t know!

[1]No so surprising a comparison as you might think if you knew little of literature. The great fantasy and children’s writers, John Ronald Reuel (JRR) Tolkien, Clive Stapleton (CS) Lewis and Gilbert Keith (GK) Chesterton were all friends and more importantly, devoted well educated Christians.   While they are famous for their apparently secular fantasy writings, there is a Christian theme woven through each of their works.
