Today was the Second Sunday in Lent.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has a few great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Tolerance

Evil preaches tolerance until it is dominant, then it tries to silence good.

The place of Religion

Let us with caution indulge supposition that morality can be maintained without religion.

19 We love him, because he first loved us. 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.  (1 John 4:19-21)

For whom the bell tolls

Our critical day is not the very day of our death, but the whole course of our life: I thank him, that prays for me when my bell tolls; but I thank him much more, that catechizes (teaches) me, or preaches to me, or instructs me how to live.

For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.

St. Luke 9:56

Over a half century ago, while I was still a child, I recall hearing a number of old people offer the following explanation for the great disasters that had befallen Russia: Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened. … Since then I have spent well-nigh 50 years working on the history of our revolution; in the process I have read hundreds of books, collected hundreds of personal testimonies. … But if I were asked today to formulate as concisely as possible the main cause of the ruinous revolution that swallowed up some 60 million of our people, I could not put it more accurately than to repeat: Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened.

Man can live and satisfy his wants only by ceaseless labor; by the ceaseless application of his faculties to natural resources. This process is the origin of property. But it is also true that a man may live and satisfy his wants by seizing and consuming the products of the labor of others. This process is the origin of plunder. Now since man is naturally inclined to avoid pain — and since labor is pain in itself —it follows that men will resort to plunder whenever plunder is easier than work. … When they can, they wish to live and prosper at the expense of others. This is no rash accusation. Nor does it come from a gloomy and uncharitable spirit. The annals of history bear witness to the truth of it. There are too many ‘great’ men in the world — legislators, organizers, do-gooders, leaders of the people, fathers of nations, and so on, and so on. Too many persons place themselves above mankind; they make a career of organizing it, patronizing it, and ruling it.

Frederic Bastiat

19th century French economist and author

An American Dream of universal prosperity has been pitted against the left’s dream of a benevolent feudal system in which the few will be very well paid to oversee the income equality of the many… The left’s social collectivism however is no replacement for what is being lost… Like Islam, it provides something for people to believe in, but the thing it provides is the compulsion to find meaning by forcibly remaking other people’s lives in a perpetual revolution which becomes its own purpose. The left can’t replace family or religion. Its social solutions are alien and artificial. They fix nothing and damage everything. Their appeal is to those who are arrogant and starved for meaning, who want religion without religion and family without family only to discover that they are not enough.

Daniel Greenfield

21st century American commentator

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 127-128, with the Collect first:

LMIGHTY God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves; Keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

And due to the rubric, the Collect for the Day is followed by the Collect for Ash Wednesday, which is found on Page 124:

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ This Collect is to be said every day in Lent, after the Collect appointed for the day, until Palm Sunday.

The Epistle for today comes from Paul’s First letter to the Thessalonians, the Fourth Chapter, beginning at the First Verse.  Apparently the Corinthians were not the only church founded in a Red Light District.  In this letter Paul is telling the people to refrain from random sex and get married.  Paul is starting into the beginning of his New Man concept.  We are called to be as God wants us to be, not as we would be without His guidance and help.  God does this, not that we would miss fun, but rather that we would enjoy happiness.

W

E beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: that no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his Holy Spirit.

This morning’s Gospel comes from the Gospel of Saint Matthew, the Fifteenth Chapter,beginning at the Twenty-First Verse.

J

ESUS went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

This story surfaces again in the Book of Common Prayer in the Prayer of Humble Access, in the Book of Common Prayer, Page 82:

W

E do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Bishop Ogles’ Sermon

We are oft fortunate to get copies of Bishop Jerry’s sermon notes.  Today is one of those Sundays.  Today’s sermon starts off with the collect, and like always, it will give you a lot to consider in your heart.

)

             I have delivered sermons on this Gospel text many times, but I believe several hundred sermons could be preached on this text with each being unique for the gems upon which they could be based. I will attempt to address only a small sampling of these gems without duplicating points I have derived in the past from the text. Amazingly, with each reading of the lectionary texts, we can gain greater and deeper insight than ever before. God’s Word is the richest of mines from which we gleam precious gems and ores, and there are new veins always to be discovered and followed.

            The first impression with which one is blessed at the reading of this, and every Word of God, is it profound beauty couched in simple and plain language. Perhaps the reason for this simplistic beauty is that the Author and Finisher of the Word became flesh like unto us for the benefit of showing us His Person on terms we could understand. We often miss the beauty of it by failing to look beyond the petty prejudices we harbor of God’s nature. Jesus never was unkind to a poor sinner, and approached them always with kindness. There is no shadow of offense or disparagement in the words of Christ to the woman of Canaan. He knew her metal, for He made her from the beginning just as He made you and me. He tried her metal knowing that the dross, if there was such, would float to the surface – but though ignorant and not as learned as those in company with Jesus, she was made of a better and purer form of metallic faith than any of them as is brought out in this text.

            After confronting the arrogant and petty Scribes and Pharisees of Galilee’s shorelines, He departed for a sojourn on the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. It was not some haphazard decision, but one made long before the worlds were made. Like the Woman who waited all the days of her life daily at the Well of Jacob for an appointment with the Savior – an appointment of which she was not aware, but God was – the Woman of Tyre and Sidon was full of pain and hurt for her daughter. Little did she know that God had already heard her tears before she ever had shed them, and our beloved Lord Jesus was on His way to keep an appointment of eternal dimensions.

            So I will open this beautiful narrative with some – not by any means all – of the salient points that literally flash as gleaming pearls from the page as we read.

First, let us observe the power of a mother’s love. The woman, like you and I, had a grievous burden on her heart. Our grievous burden was sin – hers was a precious little daughter grievously vexed by a devil. Many of our youth in America today are vexed by devils – sexual immorality, irreverent and ungodly music, drugs, rebellion, etc. Though a poor heathen woman had no right to approach the King of Israel with her petition (and neither do we), she was emboldened by her love. If we are emboldened by love we can approach Christ wherever we find Him. “And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.” The woman sought mercy for herself knowing that if the Lord had mercy on her, He would heal her daughter which was her most cherished possession.

Second, observe the unholy attitude of those closest to our Lord revealed here. How did our Lord respond? Remember, his disciples have no use for those heathen peoples outside what THEY considered the boundaries of God’s people. Herein, they were mistaken and grossly so. “But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.” Just as they had done with blind Bartemeus, those closest to our Lord tried to shush the woman away. How presumptuous, they thought, that an unclean heathen woman should attempt to approach the Lord. How presumptuous, indeed, for any of us with unwashen hands, and more importantly, unwashen hearts, to approach the Lord. But such are the ones He seeks, for the well have no need of a Physician.

Third, we are often tried and proven – not to test our metal – but as a testimony to the world and those around us. Thus, our Lord tries the woman’s faith to reveal a mystery to the disciples. Please remember that gold or silver, being tried in a furnace, loses none of its essence. All that it may lose is the dross of impurities.

At my grandmother’s funeral in a small rural Methodist Church, the first line of a Gospel song was sung which my eight year old mind never forgot. “Tempted and tried, we’re all made to wonder; why it should be thus all the day along.” Yes, we are tempted and tried, but the hidden mysteries of God are often revealed thereby. “But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”It is likely that the disciples missed the point of our Lord’s comment, for right to their fore stood a woman of the lost sheep of Israel. She was a child of the Promise made to Abraham, and she would prove it by her faith. This seeming rebuke of Christ would have discouraged an unbeliever, but not this woman. Christ intended to reveal her great faith as a lesson to the proud disciples with Him.

Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.” The woman had never heard with her ear the promise made by Christ in Matthew 21:22, but she had heard that promise in her heart. “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” Another point that jumps forth in brilliance is this: It is far better to bow the knee to our Lord while He may be found, then to do so at the last day as a sinner who is found by the Lord in his sin. If we die with deadly sin ruling our members, we die to hope of Heaven.

It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.” Our Lord loved this woman now, and long before she had ever seen His face. This response of Christ is a tender and precious expression of love. The term used for dog here is puppy dog – a family pet that begs beneath the table of the master for scraps. There is probably few living creatures with less sin than a puppy dog for all creatures, except human beings, are without sin – not having the Law of God written on Tables of Stone for their understanding and obedience. With these words, Christ is not rebuking the woman, but rather the disciples. They consider themselves children of the household of God, yet they would deprive this faithful woman of even the scraps from the table of the Master.

The woman had a ready response – perhaps more informed by the Holy Ghost than by her own imagination: “And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.” Luke 12:11-12 (KJV) The woman responded: “And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” It is at this point that the eyes and ears of the disciples are opened to a great truth they had not taken into account in the words of our Lord: “Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt.” Her faith exceeded that of those who presumed to be very holy and on the very best terms with the Lord! The church today is filled, pillar to post, with presumptuous hypocrites; but we need not remain hypocrites for neither did the disciples.

Fourth, what was the result of the Woman’s faith? Precisely what Christ has promised each of us – And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.”

Our Lord preached a memorable sermon to the disciples that day on the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, and He did so without addressing a single word to them. The sermon was in His demeanor and actions toward the Woman. The greatest sermon we preach is in our daily lives and actions.

There is a great truth revealed to us also in this dynamic and living sermon of Christ: “The lesson of perseverance in prayer. The narrative history gives us a picture of a person misled by appearances—(1) from want of knowing enough of Christ, and (2) from not yet having risen to that intensity of earnestness and full stretch of faith of which our nature is really capable. There is in Christ the stern goodness of a man of powerful insight; not the softness which, without doing any good, lavishes blessings before they are appreciated, but that paternal sternness which will have us brace ourselves up for a resolute, sustained effort. The prodigal son has a father’s welcome, but he must come home; he must come all the way. Like this woman, we may hear the words, “Be it unto thee even as thou wilt,” but not till we have deserved the earlier words, “Great is thy faith.” Archbishop Benson, Wellington College.

Another point that lies hidden in many trails of biblical texts – the terror and consequence of sin. All illness, vexation, and hurt arise from sin – either latent or active. The world is full of sin, and the innocent young daughter suffered for the sins that are common to the world – either Adam’s sin, or those of the world around her. Our sin has consequences, but there is shelter, forgiveness, and restitution in Christ our Savior!

Sermon – Rev Jack Arnold

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

Consider these words from the Collect:

… we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves; Keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul …

In the Collect, we acknowledge to God that we cannot direct our own lives, if we listen to our “inner self” we are without guidance.  Consider the airplane flying, it orders its movements according to Polaris, the Pole Star of True North.  If a pilot flies guided by his “inner self” he soon knows only where he is: at the controls, and little else.  Like the pilot who needs to know where the True North is so he can orient himself, we need God’s guidance to move towards our goal of eternal life with Him. I had the experience of flying our Ercoupe N7543C a while back. I had to maintain altitude, heading and airspeed all at the same time. I then looked outside and re-checked my instruments. As I was flying along, I thought about how these principles of flying could be applied to being a Christian. The Holy Scriptures are our instruments and we re-check our progress in the world by the instruments of His Word to make sure we are on the right heading and not stagnating in our progress as pilgrims. God is also our infallible co-pilot, always making sure that we stay on course. If we are good pilots of our future, then we shall listen to God and His Holy Word so that we might be on course.

 It should also be noted that our life here will be a lot more pleasant if we stay on course.  Recently, I read something which said at the end of our lives, the words will be “Thy will be done.”  The question is will it be us saying it or God?  We need to listen to God and do His Will.  His guidance will bring us on a path to success in our lives, if we listen to His guidance. We have to initiate the contact/relationship with Him. He does not do it on His own. He waits for an opening into our hearts. We have to let him into our hearts in order to let him guide us. If we do not do this, then how can we expect to have Him guide us, if we are not open and ready to receive Him and His Guidance? We have to be willing and ready in order to receive His Guidance, than we have to act upon the information His Guidance gives us.

Thus, when Paul tell us to keep our bodies under control of our minds and our minds to be guided by God only, he helps move us on course.  We are to be true and honest in all our dealings, both physical and fiscal and to live our faith.  His Epistle ties in well with the theme of the collect to keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls. This is keeping us within the faith of Christ, by the help of the Holy Spirit, may we remain in faith of Him in our hearts, souls and minds. It means that we need the help of the Holy Spirit to stay on track on this life, so that we may stay the course and fight the good fight and make it to see our beloved Lord in heaven.  Being honest with others and especially ourselves is one of the most important things we can do. If we are not honest with ourselves to start, how can we be honest with others?  For only by living our faith can we demonstrate that we in fact have faith.  For professed faith with no actions when you are able to act is not real.  You must actualize what you claim to believe. One must convert their stated beliefs into their actions, in order for their belief/faith to have any reasonable meaning. Without actions, the faith that one believes is not truly real, if it is not acted upon. If you claim to believe one way and act another, you are by definition a hypocrite. We are called to be as God wants us to be, not as we would be without His guidance and help.  God does this, not that we would miss fun, but rather that we would enjoy happiness.

Keeping evil thoughts under control can be a difficult task, but we do not have to face it alone, we have the Holy Ghost in our lives and other Christians and friends that support us and guide us, that can help us battle evil thoughts. We have to remain in control of our good sides. We are in a sense like the character Gollum from Lord of the Rings, who had a good personality and a bad one. Unfortunately for him, he let his evil side possess him and it won out. Unlike him, we need to make sure our good side is winning.  We need to be willing to talk to our good friends within the Church about our problems and evil thoughts and listen to their advice, and more importantly to the Holy Ghost’s advice to combat these evil thoughts and drive away the temptations of the devil. To do that we must turn to God and the Holy Ghost and Christ for help. All of them will help us win our battles, but we first have to listen to what They say. We must truly be guided by the faith in our Lord.

Matthew gives us a fine example of faith that demonstrates how we must be guided by our faith in our Lord.  The woman who cries unto Jesus is a Gentile, just like us.  Just like us she longs for His Mercy.  In her case, she asks only for the mercy rejected by others, the crumbs of the Master’s Table[1].  This is the essence of our faith, we are not worth to dine at His Table, no more than dogs are meet to dine at our table.  Yet, what is left over is more than enough for us.  And we are content with that, knowing what miserable creatures we are.  And, even more important, even knowing what miserable creatures we are, Jesus offers to share His Table with us.  He is not content for us to grovel for His crumbs. If he offers his love for us, surely we should love Him back, by acting upon our faith? If we do not act for Him, then we do not truly believe in Him. In order to truly believe, you must act upon the faith that you have. Acting is the key principle, the key cornerstone of the faith of Christians, and Christ set this example of our faith by doing it, by sacrificing Himself for our sins on the cross. This was an example of action not just diction. Action is far more important than diction only. Diction is nice, but it needs to be paired with Action in order for it to have any sort of meaning.

It is also important to understand that if one loves God, He still has the exact same amount of love available for any other person or group.  His love is infinite, even if it wasn’t, love multiplies in use!

Recognize how poorly you do with your guidance, accept His Guidance, stay on course and accept the fruits of that action.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

Psalm 32 • Ezekial 18:1-4, 25-32 • Matthew 5: 27-37

The Second Sunday in Lent.

Amen.

As we read and heard today’s psalm and lessons we may have noticed a prevailing theme throughout the Word, that theme is sin.

Sin.  This is probably the most politically incorrect term or word in many churches today.  We are not suppose to focus on the negative, but only on the positive.  We are not to point out flaws, but to accentuate the good in all mankind.   After all the world is so full of hate and mean things, hate speech and intolerance that we need to balance it out with happy thoughts, warm fuzzy bunny feelings, pleasant, bright thoughts.  Down with the minuses, up with the pluses.

Now there are only a few problems with this stream of thought.    Mostly, sin is not something you paint over, sin is not something you hide under the carpet, or out in the shed.  No, sin is only taken care of by being forgiven and then it is forgotten.  But the key to this is it must be confessed to God and then we must ask God to forgive us of the sin.

As the psalmist wrote, ‘blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit.’

B

lessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

3 When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.

4 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

Selah.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Second Sunday in Lent

In today’s gospel (St. Matthew 15:21-28), our Lord was approached by a Syrophenician woman whose daughter was possessed of an evil spirit. Her faith in him was such that even when told by our Lord that he was come to the lost sheep of the house of Israel and It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and cast it to the dogs, she persisted with the comment: Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. Our Lord’s response was clear: O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And the apostle then noted, And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

In an earlier chapter of today’s gospel, our Lord healed a woman who had an issue of blood. He recognized her faith when he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole (v.22). The woman truly believed that by merely grasping his clothing she would be healed of her infirmity, and she was.

Another example of our Lord’s healing power was when he heard a group of ten lepers calling out to him for mercy (St. Luke 17:11-19). He did not touch them and said nothing more than to Go shew yourselves unto the priests (v.14a). Of the ten, only one returned to give thanks and he was a Samaritan. To this man he said, Arise and go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole (v.19).These events in our Lord’s earthly ministry continue to provide a message of hope for all true believers as they set forth the power of God to do good to all who hold a true and abiding faith in Jesus Christ.

Throughout the history of mankind, the devil and his servants have worked indefatigably against those who held a godly faith. Lucifer has sought to keep as many as he can from reaching out to God through Christ. How many others who were standing nearby that hemorrhaging woman, or the Syrophenician woman, or the ten lepers, could have been healed but were not because they had not faith enough to reach out for him?

And such remains true today. There are actually persons who claim to be Christians all the while possessing no real faith in Jesus Christ as God’s only begotten Son. They may look upon him as a good teacher, or they may refer to him as “a son of God,” but not the only begotten Son of the Father. It seems so strange such persons would even seek membership within a church. They refuse to accept the truth about Jesus of Nazareth as being the Christ, the Saviour, the King of kings and Lord of lords. They cannot envision him as such because they have been blinded by the affairs of this world, the carnal desires of the flesh, and most assuredly by the crafts and assaults of the devil. Satan has taken the word out of their hearts leaving them with naught but an empty space wherein he has dumped a horrendous amount of skepticism and doubt concerning the things of God.

But there was no skepticism or doubt on the part of those aforementioned persons. The woman with the issue of blood had reached the end of the line with the medical practices of her day, and it was only through the power of the Holy Ghost that she at last came to touch the garment of Christ and be healed. Our Lord knew the moment she touched his clothing for he asked Who touched me? of his disciples. They were puzzled by his question because of the crowd. The woman’s faith in the person of our Lord was enough to heal her of her malady. She came forward and confessed all before him and he comforted her and sent her away in peace (St. Luke 8:43-48). And so it was for the Samaritan leper. His faith in our Lord had made him whole as well. And the Syrophenician woman who turned to him was also touched of the Spirit to come and seek our Lord’s mercy for her daughter.

God’s word has made it plain what he desires of us: that we too would come forward and confess our sins to him in the name of Jesus Christ, and be healed so that we can go on with our lives, freed from their ill effects. You see sin— just like the disease which caused that poor woman to suffer for twelve years— makes us ill spiritually and may even affect us physically. We know that when we are physically ill we ought to seek some sort of prompt relief. We will try all the conventional remedies available to us; but if they do not work, then we may even have to call on a physician for more advanced treatments.

With sin sickness, we need to go to the throne of God’s grace. Frederick W. Faber once penned these lines in a hymn (#304, 1940 Hymnal):

“There is no place where earth’s sorrows, are more felt than up in heav’n; there is no place where earth’s failings have such kindly judgment giv’n. There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the Head.”

God loves his own and is ready to forgive and forget our sins and trespasses if we would but confess them in the name of our Lord and Saviour. And we ought to lay before him our petitions and trust in him to answer them as he sees fit. God knows what we truly need. As regenerated persons, we should understand that there is a reason behind everything that God does, and does not do. We ought to pray for understanding concerning God’s plans and purposes for each of us.

The woman with the issue of blood trusted in our Lord’s power to heal her if she but touched his garment. How often do we pray, “O if I could but touch thy garment O Lord and be healed of my sins, my illnesses, my failings and faults? O wouldest thou forgive me and cleanse me, O God, in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ?”

As we have seen in our gospel lesson, the Holy Ghost moved the woman whose daughter was possessed by a devil to approach our Lord on account of her extremity. I have often heard it said, “that when we are at our wit’s end, that is where the regenerate person will find God waiting.” He is patiently waiting for us to come to him when all other options in our chest of knowledge have failed us. And when he delivers us, if we have any courage at all, we will confess to him our foolishness of not coming to him in the first place.

So the moral of our lesson today is this: Go to God with your cares and concerns, with your triumphs and your tragedies, with your sorrows and sufferings, and surely, with your praises and thanksgivings for all that he has done for you in Christ Jesus. Therefore go and seek him as if you wished to touch his garment, trusting that in that moment he will do for you more than you could ever possibly imagine. And then be sure to give him the glory and praise with heart-felt thanks.

Let us pray,

F

ather, we call upon thee to fill us with thy most holy Spirit; that under his influence we would seek thee daily via our prayers and praises, and that you would, in turn, touch our lives and make of us fit servants of thy kingdom; and this we beg in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·       One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·       All religions are not equal
  • ·       All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·       The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·       All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·       Good;
  • ·       Bad;
  • ·       Evil;
  • ·       Right;
  • ·       Wrong;
  • ·       Allah is the Devil;
  • ·       Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

The Islamist group (ISIS) took over Quaragosh, the biggest Christian city in Iraq; 164 men, women and children were beheaded.  People ask where is God?  The real question is where are the people to enforce God’s will.  Pray the people of the world will see Allah for who he is, the Devil.  Pray for those who remain behind that they might find a way to safety.

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of “Separation of Church and State” in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

Education

Aaron is trying out a new job area as an intern and asks that you pray he might decide if this is a career field and way of life he might enjoy.  Please pray he might open his heart to God’s guidance and see what he needs to do to fulfill his potential and live his life in a manner which will bring true happiness to him.

Thomas Dabney is attending Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, to finish his Bachelor’s Degree.  Please pray for Thomas to focus on education and do his very best at school.

Various Special Requests

This is a horrible time for the people of India, Christians in particular; they are having problems with Hunger, Bank Closings, Transportation and Schools not functioning.  Pray for the Leaders and Members of our Church in Eluru Andhra Pradesh. Pray their basic needs will be met and God will be close to them in this time of need.

We ask that you pray, please ask God that the Holy Ghost might give you insight into how you might make the lives of your friends and family better.  Remember helping others is not just those who you don’t know!
