The Fourth Sunday afterEaster

Sunday Report

This is the Fourth Sunday after Easter; the Easter season is five Sundays, the last of which, the Fifth Sunday after Easter, is commonly called Rogation Sunday.  Like every day, today we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, “Christ the Lord IS Risen today!

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

On Heaven

Tirian had thought—or he would have thought if he had time to think at all—that they were inside a little thatched stable, about twelve feet long and six feet wide. In reality they stood on grass, the deep blue sky was overhead, and the air which blew gently on their faces was that of a day in early summer. Not far away from them rose a grove of trees, thickly leaved, but under every leaf there peeped out the gold or faint yellow or purple or glowing red of fruits such as no one has seen in our world. The fruit made Tirian feel that it must be autumn but there was something in the feel of the air that told him it could not be later than June. They all moved towards the trees.

Everyone raised his hand to pick the fruit he best liked the look of, and then everyone paused for a second. This fruit was so beautiful that each felt “It can’t be meant for me . . . surely we’re not allowed to pluck it.”

“It’s all right,” said Peter. “I know what we’re all thinking. But I’m sure, quite sure, we needn’t. I’ve a feeling we’ve got to the country where everything is allowed.”

“Here goes, then!” said Eustace. And they all began to eat.

What was the fruit like? Unfortunately no one can describe a taste. All I can say is that, compared with those fruits, the freshest grapefruit you’ve ever eaten was dull, and the juiciest orange was dry, and the most melting pear was hard and woody, and the sweetest wild strawberry was sour. And there were no seeds or stones, and no wasps. If you had once eaten that fruit, all the nicest things in this world would taste like medicines after it. But I can’t describe it. You can’t find out what it is like unless you can get to that country and taste it for yourself.

The Last Battle

In the Morning

The real problem of the Christian life comes where people do not usually look for it. It comes the very moment you wake up each morning. All your wishes and hopes for the day rush at you like wild animals. And the first job each morning consists simply in shoving them all back; in listening to that other voice, taking that other point of view, letting that other larger, stronger, quieter life come flowing in. And so on, all day. Standing back from all your natural fussings and frettings; coming in out of the wind.

We can only do it for moments at first. But from those moments the new sort of life will be spreading through our system: because now we are letting Him work at the right part of us. It is the difference between paint, which is merely laid on the surface, and a dye or stain which soaks right through. He never talked vague, idealistic gas. When He said, ‘Be perfect,’ He meant it. He meant that we must go in for the full treatment. It is hard; but the sort of compromise we are all hankering after is harder—in fact, it is impossible. It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.

Mere Christianity

Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them. For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

Proverbs 24:1-2

And I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity. Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

Ecclesiastes 8:10-11

Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you…

Amos 5:15

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: who when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

St. Matthew 13:45-46

Let it never surprise us if we are tempted of the devil. Let us rather expect it as a matter of course if we are living members of Christ. The Master’s lot will be the lot of his disciples. That mighty spirit who did not fear to attack Jesus himself is still going about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. That murderer and liar who vexed Job and overthrew David and Peter still lives and is not yet bound (Job 1:12; 2:6; 1 Chr. 21:1; Luke 22:31-32). If he cannot rob us of heaven, he will at any rate make our journey thither painful. If he cannot destroy our souls, he will at least bruise our heels (Gen. 3:15). Let us beware of despising him, or thinking lightly of his power. Let us rather put on the whole armor of God and cry to the strong for strength (James 4:7). Let us all watch and pray daily against his devices. There is no enemy worse than an enemy who is never seen and never dies, who is near to us wherever we live, and goes with us wherever we go.

Fear is the true currency of the decadent civilization. A corrupted fear that is used to expand a vast bureaucracy that claims to manage risk… Groups are stampeded into accepting new tiers of fear government and fear authority based on the risk that something might happen. And yet the source of the fear is never dealt with. A vigorous civilization rushes out to deal with threats. A decadent civilization imprisons itself out of fear.

Among the many lessons of empires is one shared by virtually every empire: once the privileged few limit the rise of those from humble origins (i.e. social mobility), the empire is doomed to rising instability and collapse… The greater the concentration of wealth and power, the lower the social mobility; the lower the social mobility, the greater the odds that the system will collapse when faced with a crisis that it would have easily handled in more egalitarian times. When the economy is expanding faster than the population and the tide is lifting all ships large and small, the majority of people feel their chances of getting ahead are positive (even if the actual chances remain low). But when the economy is stagnating, and they see those at the apex of the pyramid still amassing monumental gains, the majority realizes their chances of securing a better life are declining. The natural result is frustration, anger and a disavowal of the corrupt status quo: in other words, precisely what the US is experiencing in this election cycle.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister or our Deacon Striker.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 174-175, with the Collect first:

The Fourth Sunday after Easter.

The Collect.

O

 ALMIGHTYGod, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

This week’s Epistle came from the First Chapter of the Epistle of Saint James beginning at the Seventeenth Verse. James tells us we are the pinnacle of God’s creation, destined to be the stewards of His world.  This position has its privileges, but even more important it has its responsibilities.  Most of the time, we seem to concentrate on what we like, the privileges, and forget about those responsibilities which require work, putting off instant gratification, persistence and sometimes courage.  As Saint Paul so often tells us, we must become new people, putting aside our old ways, considerate of what we should do and let ourselves become open to His Word:

E

VERY good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

This week’s Holy Gospel came from the Sixteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the Fifth Verse.

You must recognize we are imperfect creatures with free will.  For us to do God’s Will, not ours, we need help.  We need that bit of good leaven, which will let our hearts rise to the occasion.  We need the Holy Ghost in our hearts and souls.  Listen as John tells us:

J

ESUS said unto his disciples, Now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

We are in the Easter Season which consists of Easter and the following four Sundays, until we get to Rogation Sunday.  This is a time we should work on centering our lives on the central figure in our religion, Jesus Christ.

Consider these words from the Collect:

who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found

The very first phrase is critical to understanding our relationship with the world.  We want to follow our own hearts and they will lead us down the path to Donkey Island and eventually the pit.  This explains the “unruly wills and affections of sinful men.”  Our natural wills and affections are towards sinful things and not that of God. God’s commandments to us are to re-shape our affections from things of mammon, to things of eternity. It requires tweaking our perspective on what is best for us to match with what God knows is the best for us. He knows us far better than we do, and knows what is actually best for us. We have one hope; that we will listen to the instruction God freely offers us.  If we will just do what He asks we will find true joy.

We have to internalize His commands into our hearts through listening and then through repetition, action, this is the only way we can follow His Commandments and show the World we follow Him. It is not enough to hear the Word only, we need to live the Word. Showing others that we are dedicated to following the Lord, and not just saying that we are following the Lord is how we can truly follow Him. .  Our life will be better when we follow His directions and if we will allow God to rule us and desire His help, we will be able to attain the state of happiness we will then deserve. He knows what is right and what is wrong for us. He does not want us to lead Puritanical lives with no fun allowed whatsoever, but we must have fun the right way and not the wrong way. The right way can lead to a lifetime of happiness, whereas the wrong way can lead to a life time of misery. Many people think that God forbids things for us, because He does not want us to have fun. Nothing can be further from the truth. He forbids things that are harmful for our spiritual well being, and allows us to have clean spiritual, joyous things in our life that will develop our spiritual well being.

We need God’s help (this is one of the places the Holy Ghost comes in) to be able to want for ourselves that which He Wants for us.  If we can desire what He Wants, our ability to follow His Instructions will be much enhanced.

We are God’s creatures, first among all His Creation with all the privileges (which we like) and all the responsibility (which we are not so keen on) which come with that status.  All good comes from God, who is always with us; always the same; a true bearing in world in a constant state of flux. While the world may change, the Word will never change, no matter what happens in the world today. His Word is refreshing constant, in this world where things are changing every few years it seems, but His Word will never change. It’s meaning never changes, as God never changes. As God is truth, which by its nature cannot change, so should we never change in our beliefs towards Him. It is refreshing to have Him in our lives as a constant that we can always cling to when we get in trouble. Whenever it is a simple problem, such as a computer program malfunctioning, or a complex problem, we can turn to Him in our day of trial and find ourselves comforted.  We need to listen to not only Him, but those around us, think before we speak, think more before we act in haste.  We must put ourselves to good and separate ourselves from evil and superfluity of naughtiness so we can hear His Word, which will save our souls.

So, how can we hear?

When Jesus got ready to leave this world for His, He told the disciples that He would send them the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, to keep them in Him and to help them understand what they had so far been unable to truly grasp.  Unless we allow the Holy Ghost to enter into our hearts, we will never truly understand that which is from God.  This is an important concept with messages that are not from God being bombarded across the world through principalities and powers of this world. Only the Holy Ghost can help us remain grounded within the truth. We need the Holy Ghost to enter into us that we might be able to hear the Word of God, and more important than just hearing the Word, we need the Holy Ghost to be able to act upon the Word. We must allow the Holy Ghost to enter in to our hearts and souls so we can understand what God has for us.  It is that simple.  Open your heart, pray for God to send Him into that open heart.

For with the Holy Ghost’s help, you can hear, understand and act on The Word.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

Fourth Sunday after Easter

Surety; as in an eternal insurance

24 April 2016

Psalm 116 • Job 19:21-27 • John 12:44-50

 James 1:17-21  •  Gospel John 16:5-15

The Fourth Sunday after Easter.

The Collect.

O

 ALMIGHTYGod, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

I would like you to listen once again to the Word of God as we have heard it today.  In the three passages of scripture found in the lectionary for the Fourth Sunday after Easter we read of a concept that can be best described as ‘eternal insurance’.  What do I mean by that?

Let me break it down, starting with the Psalm for the day, continuing with the Old Testament lesson and concluding with the New Testament lesson.

David, a prophet, proclaims his love for the Lord, because the Lord hears his voice and more importantly, his supplications. Even though the sorrows of death surround him and the fearful pains of hell are upon his psyche, he calls upon the Lord.   David knows the Lord is merciful, that the Lord will hear him and more importantly he will deliver his soul from these afore mentioned pains and sorrows.  Notice what David writes. ‘…thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling…. I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living…’    David writes of his assurance in the Lord.  This is what I mean by eternal insurance.  And at the end of the psalm David tells us ‘…precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints…’   Here we find the comfort that the Lord does care for us and he cares about us.  Sometimes we feel as if we are abandoned by the Lord. Rest assured beloved, God never abandons his own!  Never!

Now adding to this eternal insurance or surety (a bond of trust and safety) we now look to the suffering saint, Job and his wonderful declaration about the Lord.

 ‘…for I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: and though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another, though my reins be consumed within me…’    Wow!   Job is prophesying about the coming Savior, the Redeemer, Christ the Lord.

Interesting, the oldest book of the Old Testament, we find an ancient saint pointing down through the ages, many centuries later, to a latter day, when his (our) Redeemer will stand upon the earth.  Talk about eternal.  ‘…my redeemer liveth (present tense) …and he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth (future tense).  And even more remarkable about this passage, Job knows he will see the Redeemer, even though his flesh will have become food for worms, he, Job will be there in his flesh to see his God.

Do you understand the prophetic concept of these words?   Job is writing about Resurrection, about a future time of reconciliation with his Lord and most importantly he will be there in the flesh to see it all take place.

What a message of hope.  What a message of assurance (insurance) of eternal life.  He writes that his eyes, not someone else’s, shall behold his Redeemer.

Isn’t this what the message of the Great Resurrection is all about?  We shall not see eternal Death.  We shall be raised up, even after being consumed away by the decay of this fallen world, and we will witness our Redeemer as He stands upon the earth in that latter day.  Alleluia.

If we understand the setting of the first day of the week as a day of worship, the new covenant, not the old, we can then see what Job and others have written and proclaimed over the ages.

Each Sunday is a ‘mini’ resurrection. Each Sunday should remind us of the great change that took place on the First Day, that Glorious Resurrection; old things have passed away, behold a new covenant is now in place.  Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine.  He is my redeemer.

In conclusion, let us just read and reflect upon the passage found in the Gospel of John, Chapter 12 Verses 44 through 50.

J

esus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.

45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.

46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

Eternal life, eternal assurance, eternal insurance from hell and eternal damnation, all found here in our scripture verses for this Fourth Sunday after Easter.

May God bless and keep you in this coming week.  May He bless you in your spiritual journey, giving you the peace that passes understanding.

Let us pray:

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being; We, thy needy creatures, render thee our humble praises, for thy preservation of us from the beginning of our lives to this day, and especially for having delivered us from the dangers of the past night. For these thy mercies, we bless and magnify thy glorious Name; humbly beseeching thee to accept this our morning sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; for his sake who lay down in the grave, and rose again for us, thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

O

 Lord Heavenly Father, to our prayers, we join our unfeigned thanks for all thy mercies; for our being, our reason, and all other endowments and faculties of soul and body; for our health, friends, food, and raiment, and all the other comforts and conveniences of life. Above all, we adore thy mercy in sending thy only Son into the world, to redeem us from sin and eternal death, and in giving us the knowledge and sense of our duty towards thee. We bless thee for thy patience with us, notwithstanding our many and great provocations; for all the directions, assistances, and comforts of thy Holy Spirit; for thy continual care and watchful providence over us through the whole course of our lives; and particularly for the mercies and benefits of the past day; beseeching thee to continue these thy blessings to us, and to give us grace to show our thankfulness in a sincere obedience to his laws, through whose merits and inter-cession we received them all, thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Fourth Sunday after Easter

13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

(1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

At the outset of his earthly ministry, our Lord called on all to Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (St. Matthew 4:17). He later reminded his disciples that in this life they would face tribulation (St. John 16:33) but afterward, they would receive eternal life in his coming kingdom (St. John 10:27-28; 11:25-26). He advised them not put their trust in the riches of this world, but instead to lay up for themselves treasure in heaven (St. Matthew 6:19-20). He forewarned them that they would suffer persecution and death at the hands of those who believed themselves to be righteous (St. John 16:2-3). He also reminded them that through him, they would be resurrected just as he had risen that first Easter morning (St. Luke 24:36-43; St. John 6:44-51).

Our Lord spoke of two resurrections: one unto life and the other unto judgment (St. John 5:28-29). God has made plain that whosoever will believe on the name of the Lord Jesus, the same shall have eternal life— saved from this body of sin and death (St. John 3:16; Romans 7:24-25).

In the beginning, God created man in his image and after his likeness. He also gave to him the breath of his own Spirit. As a result, mankind possessed not only knowledge of the world around him, he also possessed a knowledge of the existence of God (Genesis 1:26-27; 2:7). And even after their fall in the Garden God still desired fellowship with his creatures. The whole of the Old Testament speaks of God’s plan to reclaim his lost creation. And man needs reclaiming because as long as man resides in a mortal body, sin and death will remain a part of his being affording him no hope of redemption by his own efforts. It was apparent to God, given the aforementioned circumstances, that we needed a Saviour: one who could atone for our sins and save us from his righteous judgment on account of those sins (Revelation 1:5-8, 17-18). Paul deals with a very important aspect of God’s plan of redemption and reclamation (I Thessalonians 4:13-18).

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope(v.13). The apostle had spent the earlier portion of the chapter setting forth the paradigm for our Christian walk, and at this point, he connected such to that great reward which our Lord established via his resurrection. In his first epistle to the Corinthians, the apostle penned the following, All flesh is not the same flesh… There are celestial bodies and bodies terrestrial… So also is the resurrection of the dead, It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: it is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: it is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body (15:35-44). The return of our Lord who will then raise up our dead bodies is that blessed hope of which the apostle wrote (St. Titus 2:13- 14); and such is available to all who love the Lord Jesus as the Christ: who will, by the power of his shed blood, free believers from the sting of death (I Corinthians 15:54-57).

Still, there will be those who for whatever reason will not come to a saving knowledge of our Lord. They are described in our scripture lesson as others which have no hope (v.13). They have no hope because they are under a sentence of condemnation (St. John 3:18-19). There is no universalism in biblical Christianity as one is either saved or unsaved. If one dies without accepting Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord, such a one will be forever separated from God’s coming kingdom.

For if we believe that Jesus Christ died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him (v.14). In this verse, the apostle informs us that on the day of his coming, our Lord will bring with him the souls of his departed saints. They were never apart from him, or in a state of limbo, but have been present with him since their deaths (see II Corinthians 5:8).

For this we say unto by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep (v.15). We are thus informed by the apostle that should our Lord come prior to the death of our physical bodies, we who are alive at that moment will not prevent, that is, go before those who have preceded us in death in receiving a new and gloried body which God intends to give every regenerated person at his coming.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: (v.16). Christ will call forth the remains of all those who have died in the faith for the purpose of clothing them in a new and incorruptible body. In the gospel accounts, our Lord was seen in a new body, but one that was recognizable to his disciples and this was in agreement with accounts from the books of Job (19:25-27) and Isaiah (26:19). Clearly, our good and gracious God long ago announced his plan for a resurrection to everlasting life, and so we need only trust in his word and believe.

Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord(v.17). Our Lord will step into the clouds and call the dead in him to rise followed by those of the faith who are alive in the flesh at that particular moment. This is in agreement with I Corinthians 15:51-53 wherein the apostle Paul explained, Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. The words caught up speak of being “snatched up” or “snatched away” much as a bird of prey will carry off its catch. This “snatching up” is known as “the rapture” on account of its rendering from the Latin in the old Vulgate, or “the translation” being understood in the same sense as the Greek word “harpazo” and applies only to believers. The translation of Enoch (Genesis 5:24) and of Elijah (II Kings 2:11) are illustrative of this concept. This passage when combined with I Corinthians 15:51-53, indicates that it will be a sudden event with no warning other than a trumpet sounding. What an amazing moment— to hear that sound and afterwards to be instantly ushered into the presence of our Lord. Then, there is the added bonus of being reunited with our godly relatives and friends there in the clouds. And afterward, our Lord will then lead us all home.

Wherefore comfort one another with these words (v.18). The apostle was given to pen this final verse because our Lord wanted us to know these things so that we might continue in our assignments here on earth, that is, to occupy till he comes for us (St. Luke 19:13), and not lose heart. God has a plan and purpose, and we need only trust in him and abide in the Lord Jesus until that wonderful moment arrives.

It is my prayer each of you will be ready to meet the Lord whenever he comes to call us home. It may be many years hence; or it could be tomorrow; or even today. Nevertheless, if we are in Christ Jesus, we have been guaranteed a place among the saints of God both old and new. May our Lord touch your hearts to pray for his coming and to love his appearing when he comes.

Let us pray,

F

ather, we trust in thy word written and find comfort in its messages to us; and so assist us, we pray, to keep our minds and hearts focused on thee, seeking in this life to do those things which you have gifted us to do in thy service, as well as to watch and pray for the coming of thy dear Son to bring us home; for these things we ask in the name of him whose coming we are watching for, even Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.
