Fourth of July

Celebration of the Independence of

The United States of America

                    from Great Britain

Sunday Report

Tomorrow in the United States we will celebrate Independence Day, 4 July 2016, Anno Domini which marks 240 years since the establishment of this country on the solid foundation of Divine Providence.  That would be God.

There is a marked tendency to think of the Fourth of July as just another holiday, perhaps special because of the fireworks.  It is not.  This day marks the establishment of the only successful Republic the world has ever seen.  It is a special country with special relationship with God.  It is not that God is on our side, but rather we are on God’s side.  If we lose that relationship, we lose the special nature of our country.

It is also a day to recall the cost of freedom.

We trust you and your families had the very best Independence Day.  While you were enjoying the day, we hope you took the time remember the terrible cost of our freedom and those who paid it for us.

One Nation, Under God will result in Liberty and Justice for all

When this country was founded, it drew its authority from God, that is our Creator, and acknowledged that the rights of citizens come from their creator, not from the government.  Our nation was unique, the most educated and successful men in the Colonies were the ones who began the independence movement; dedicated godly men who were well conversant with the history of the world.  They knew the frailty of man and his propensity for both ease and evil.  They knew the need for God’s guidance for the country and provided for freedom of religion.  Contrary to the current state of affairs in this country, they did not provide for freedom from religion.  They knew an ungodly country would quickly devolve into a democracy, nothing more than mob rule, which of course is actually a dictatorship of that incredibly small minority to rule the mob.

Since the late 1800s, forces have been at active work attempting to promote government as the solution to everything so that it might rule rather than facilitate.  The evolution movement was the first manifestation of that phenomena.  Government cannot be the final authority if God exists, so He must be denied.  Thus, a “theory” for which there is literally no evidence and which runs contrary to all other rules of science has been adopted as “settled science.”[1]  Note that both communism and national socialism deny the existence of God and base all their authority on force and legality.  It is a requirement for them to remove God from the world.  Likewise note both systems remove the authority and legitimacy of the nuclear family.  What they leave as a family no longer has the authority to raise children, women become instruments of the State turning out useful units to do the bidding of the State.  The  elderly, the ill, the mentally deficient, the lame are disposed of along with any who disagree.  And it is all legal, and thus for the State moral.

This is what happens when we have no longer the Rule of Law[2], but the Rule of Man[3].

Note – Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Adolf Hitler, Joesph Stalin, Mao Tse-Tung, Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh, all atheists, were all responsible for the murder of tens of millions of people.  Nothing any of them did was illegal, for their government under the Rule of Man legitimized their actions.  Just like Dred Scott, legal and moral are not the same when you follow God not.

Consider carefully the Prayer for our Country found on page 36 of the Book of Common Prayer.  Ask yourself if this is what we should be doing as a country and how close are we to such?

For Our Country.

A

LMIGHTY God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favour and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honourable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogancy, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Anglican Orthodox Church and the Country

The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard.  It is quite interesting that the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States.  Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church.  Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of the nation.

If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8:36) and And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)

Today (July 4th) is the day in America on which we celebrate Independence Day! But what did that Independence, gained from Great Britain, entail for the people of America? It provided a free and open society in which her citizens could enjoy those unalienable rights granted by God of life (even to a child in its mother’s womb), liberty (the freedom to worship as we please, say what we please, and do what we please as long as we do not harm others), and the pursuit of happiness (to plan for and provide for our families, or our own careers, in whatever way we deem suitable for us). These are not rights granted by the American government, or any other government “these are rights granted by God Almighty; Any government that attempts to curtail these rights, or adjudicate them into privileges, are acting out of any legitimate authority.

We should never forget that this country was founded upon Christian and Biblical principles (notwithstanding the recent words of a President who wishes to deny that America is still a Christian nation). An old friend of mine, Rev. James Flanagan of Philadelphia [4], sent to my church for posting a beautiful copy of George Washington’s Prayer at Valley Forge which we have been honored to display at St Andrews:

Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United states at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen ~ George Washington

I recently discovered a report released in May by Harvard University entitled, Shaping the Nation: Estimating the Impact of Fourth of July Using a Natural Experiment, which finds Republicans benefit more from Fourth of July parades and activities than do Democrats. The study reveals that young people below the age of eighteen who attended at least one patriotic celebration on the 4th of July are more likely to vote and support the Republican Party. I will leave the reader to draw the proper conclusion to this report whose aim is likely to discourage patriotic celebrations as threatening to the socialist agenda. Perhaps the display of Nativity Scenes and Easter Crosses might have a similar detrimental impact on the atheist faith as well.

It is the job of no President to denigrate our Christian heritage or the values that have made our nation great. Unless America is a Christian nation in the hearts of her people, and not the lips of a President, we may not be so. But as long as we hold dear those truths in our hearts to be self-evident that underpinned our founding as a nation, we shall ever remain strong and free.

It appears we have ventured far from those principles for which our forefathers fought and died to establish us as a Nation. The answer to our apostasy is not in whom we send to Washington to represent us “it lies in the hearts of the American people themselves to reaffirm. If America returns to God who gave us liberty, we shall find those to represent us in Washington whose values are likewise based on biblical and Constitutional principles. My prayer is that God will once again shed His Light on Thee, America!

Propers

We hold our Independence Day dear to our hearts and it is one of our religious feasts or holidays.  A proper Red Letter Day!

The Collect.

O

 ETERNALGod, through whose mighty power our fathers won their liberties of old; Grant, we beseech thee, that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain these liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen.

The Epistle comes from the Tenth Chapter of the Book of Deuteronomy beginning at the Seventeenth Verse:

T

HE LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward: he doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment. Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name. He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen..

Today’s Gospel started in the Fifth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Matthew beginning at the Forty-Third Verse:

J

ESUS said, Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

… Most ignorance is vincible ignorance. We don’t know because we don’t want to know. It is our will that decides how and upon what subjects we shall use our intelligence. . . . We objected to the morality because it interfered with our sexual freedom.

I don’t believe in God, so He does not exist?

Those Divine demands which sound to our natural ears most like those of a despot and least like those of a lover, in fact marshal us where we should want to go if we knew what we wanted. He demands our worship, our obedience, our prostration. Do we suppose that they can do Him any good, or fear, like the chorus in Milton, that human irreverence can bring about ‘His glory’s diminution’? A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell. But God wills our good, and our good is to love Him (with that responsive love proper to creatures) and to love Him we must know Him: and if we know Him, we shall in fact fall on our faces. If we do not, that only shows that what we are trying to love is not yet God— though it may be the nearest approximation to God which our thought and fantasy can attain. Yet the call is not only to prostration and awe; it is to a reflection of the Divine life, a creaturely participation in the Divine attributes which is far beyond our present desires. We are bidden to ‘put on Christ’, to become like God. That is, whether we like it or not, God intends to give us what we need, not what we now think we want. Once more, we are embarrassed by the intolerable compliment, by too much love, not too little.

Death

What sort of a lover am I to think so much about my affliction and so much less about hers? Even the insane call, ‘Come back,’ is all for my own sake. I never even raised the question whether such a return, if it were possible, would be good for her. I want her back as an ingredient in the restoration of my past. Could I have wished her anything worse? Having got once through death, to come back and then, at some later date, have all her dying to do over again? They call Stephen the first martyr. Hadn’t Lazarus the rawer deal?

Those nations whose faith and institutions are centered on God shall never suffer the ravages of war and desolation. How shall our own nation fare as we cast aside, day by day, every vestige of that abiding faith that made us a most cherished nation among the nations of the earth? If America can be saved, that salvation shall not occur through political measures. It is the common heart of America that must be turned back to her God and Benefactor. If America can now be retrieved from sure ruin, it must happen one heart at a time.

The Church of England has passed through the looking glass. It has moved into an unpredictable, unstable situation. The doctrines of faith are no longer ring-fenced as many people thought. Anything can, in principle, be changed by lobbying and political manoevering. It has been done and it will be done again. The Church of England is now in crisis because it has now been destablised. It has set itself over the Word of God instead of under it. It is no longer, [as] Article XX … puts it, ‘a witness and a keeper of Holy Writ’, but it has now assumed the role of judge and arbiter of its doctrines. This is a position it ought not to occupy, nor can it occupy, without drawing down upon itself the judgement of God.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 197-198, with the Collect first:

The Sixth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

O

 GOD, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man’s understanding; Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

As is oft the case, the Collect asks for help from the Holy Ghost to enter into our hearts that we might love God and, thus obtain His most excellent Gifts.  As imperfect creatures with free will, if we ask God for something, it tends to be what we want, not what we need.  He knows.  Thus, we need His Help in the form of the Holy Ghost.

The Epistle came from Paul’s letter to the Romans, beginning at the First Verse of the Sixth Chapter. Paul tells us that as we were baptized unto Jesus in life, so we are baptized unto his death.  We share His death on the Cross for our sins and by His death, our sin is dead; then as He was raised up, so are we.  It is intended the death we die unto sin is to be permanent and that we go forth and sin no more.  Yet, as long as we live here on earth, we sin.  Yet, as long as we live in Christ, we live.  Thus, we reckon ourselves “to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

K

NOW ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Today’s Holy Gospel started in the Fifth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning at the Twentieth Verse. Jesus tells his disciples, “Except your righteousness exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.”  Very worrisome indeed!  Scribes and Pharisees spent their entire lives acting the epitome of righteousness.  There is no way mere mortals could exceed their righteousness, or so it would seem.  Jesus goes on to tell us that not only would we not go to heaven if we commit murder, but we are in danger of the same judgment of we are angry without just cause.  If that were not worrisome enough, we are in danger of hell-fire if we call one another a fool!  Let not the night fall on discord with your family and friends, your neighbors in the Christian sense of The Word.  The text following asks us to do our best to follow Jesus and in return, his sacrifice will serve to set aside the just judgment and we shall be accounted as righteous before God.

J

ESUS said unto his disciples, Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt do no murder; and whosoever murdereth shall be in danger of the judgment: but I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell-fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly  contained in the forewords above.

Consider the words from the Collect,  … who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man’s understanding; Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire …

We acknowledge God will give those who love Him more good than they can imagine, let alone ask for.  But, first you have to love Him.  So what should we ask for?  The Holy Ghost to enter in to our hearts that we might truly love Him.  If we do, more good will come to us than we can even imagine or hope for. The Holy Ghost is a key element of love, without Him we cannot even love Him. If we cannot love others, how can we love Him who we have not seen? He gives us far more love than we possibly deserve.

That is the great and wonderful news about following our Lord. He has love for the entire world, if they would turn from their sinful ways and follow Him. This is the message that we are bringing to the world. That God loved us so much that He was willing to sacrifice His Son on the cross to die for us, that we and all who believe on Him might have everlasting life.  This is truly the Good News, for we were once condemned to hellfire, but now through our Lord’s sacrifice are going to be allowed to enter into heaven, though we are imperfect creatures.

We are imperfect creatures, created with free will by a Perfect Being.  To get into heaven’s gate, we need be accounted as perfect before the Judge.  That requires a bit of an accounting irregularity, to get imperfection accounted as perfection.  And that is exactly what Jesus’ death on the cross did for us. It has made us imperfect creatures accounted as perfect before the great Judge, Our Father in heaven.

So what does the Collect counsel, ask for the Holy Ghost to enter into our hearts that we might get more than we can desire!  Jesus!  Jesus is that accounting irregularity. He can give us his guidance and grace via the Holy Ghost, to make us better men and women of the Lord. By His Sacrifice, made one time, for all mankind, for all time, we are accounted as perfect by His Faith and Action.  Thus, through His Faith and His Action, we attain life everlasting. This is truly the greatest miracle that Christ performed for us, those of us who believe will get eternal life. And it doesn’t start when you die either! Starting today, you don’t have to wait until you die to benefit from your immortality.

In fact, God would prefer you to start acting like you will live forever right now.  Thus, decisions you make, actions you take will be with the long term view of eternity!  Versus our rather usual shortsighted short term view, we must think in the terms of the big picture, not the tiny speck in the picture. Think of the clear vision of the big picture and not just the small, close in picture.

Zoom out and see the big picture around you! And think of how your actions will impact you, your family and others down the road, before acting.  The Holy Ghost can provide the inspiration and guidance we need to think through our actions. We just need to listen to Him at the moment when we need to act and remind ourselves that our future will be better if we listen to the Holy Ghost rather than ourselves. If we try and figure out the best action to take without listening to the Holy Ghost, we will be sure to set ourselves on a course for ruin. We need to always keep the bigger picture in mind. The problem with some of these theologians and manuscript critics today, is they ignore how Scripture fits in the bigger picture and choose small, insignificant details to focus on and nit-pick. They do not see how the Gospel and the Old Testament fit in the big picture. We have to think of ourselves as a part of God’s much bigger and larger picture, and act to the best of our abilities and with the guidance of the Holy Ghost as a positive aspect of that larger picture.

In today’s Epistle, St. Paul says that as Jesus Christ died and rose again, so too should we die to our sins and rise again in a better state. He uses this metaphor to describe both our life here on earth, renewed through the death of the old man to the new, and to describe our life in heaven from here on Earth. When we die here on Earth, we will be resurrected in heaven with our Lord, free from our mortal and corruptible body, to our new and immortal state.

And as he says, as death has no dominion over Jesus Christ, so too shall it have no more dominion over us. For by his death and resurrection, he has paid our wages for our sin, which as St. Paul says in Romans is death. His death has paid for our sins, that we might be accounted as perfect to get into heaven. We are not worthy on our own to get into heaven, but for the Grace of God, sending his Son Jesus to die for our sins, we will be able to get into heaven. This is the greatest miracle of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The resurrection truly is the greatest miracle that Jesus performed. Because before He came and died for our sins, we could not get into heaven on our own and in fact still cannot. It is by God’s Grace, that He sent his only begotten son, that we should not perish, but have everlasting life. This is truly an amazing miracle, and I find myself still amazed every time I think of it. How we poor sinful creatures that could not make it to heaven on our own, have had our wages of sin paid by our Lord’s death upon the cross.

As imperfect creatures, immortal or not, we make mistakes.  One to avoid is being “mad” at one’s fellow creatures, particularly family and friends.  We pick the most illogical reasons to be mad, the word chosen rather than angry.  Looked at logically, as God does, we need to solve the issue, kiss and make up, and do it before the sun sets on our anger.  Never part in anger.  One of you may not come back.  We put aside our often foolish and angry thoughts and not act upon them, but rather have Christly thoughts and act upon those. Remember that before you are “angry” at a friend, relative, acquaintance, or stranger. We must not let the anger and other irrational emotions such as fear get the best of us, but rather think calmly and figure out the best way to handle whatever situation we are in without losing control of our emotions. It can be a rather hard thing at times, but it must be done nevertheless. But through the Holy Ghost it can be done. So, the solution is to pray to God and ask for His Help in bridling our tongue and have it be a reasonable tool rather than a tool of anger and deceit!

When Jesus gave His Life for us, He did it knowing we would fail to follow in perfection, but fully aware some would follow to the best of their ability. We must get back up after we make our mistakes and continue on trying the best we can to follow Him. That is all He asks, do your best.  Even Saint Paul had trouble following our Lord, but he kept trying and doing his real best not to make the same mistake again.  Doing your best is not the same as saying you are doing your best.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Sixth Sunday after Trinity

In the Sixth Chapter of Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans we read, Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God (Romans 6:9-10). Consider also the following passage taken from the Book of Hebrews (9:24-28), For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true: but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest enterth into the holy place every year with blood of others; for then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

In Old Testament times, the Israelites were under a covenant obligation to make certain offerings and sacrifices to God for their sins and trespasses. Original sin had brought death— both physical and spiritual— to mankind. God gave to his chosen people a temporary means of being freed from their sins through his prescriptions as set forth in the Law of Moses. But these offerings and sacrifices only covered their immediate sins and did not impute to the individual petitioner everlasting salvation. And so, from year to year, the faithful were required to journey to Jerusalem that they might offer up those sacrifices and offerings which the LORD required. St. Paul likened this to being under the tutelage of a pedagogue or teacher (see Galatians 3:23-25).

But God’s remedy for original sin involved sending his only begotten Son into the world to free all who would believe on him from the bondage of the Law (Romans 7:15-8:4). In response to our Lord’s free gift to us, Saint Paul counseled believers to, Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage (Galatians 5:1).

And the apostle clarified the issue of the sacrifices when he wrote in Hebrews 10, For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins (vv.1-2)… For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins (v.4)But this man [Christ Jesus], after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God (v.12)for by one offering, he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified (v.14)Now where remission of [sin] is, there is no more offering for sin (v. 18).

Given these verses, a proper understanding of the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper would be that it is a memorial of his sacrifice on Calvary’s cross. In our prayer book on Page 80 are the words of institution given us by our Lord: do this in remembrance of me, and, this is my body, and this is my blood. Admittedly, without a proper bible understanding of this sacrament, one might come to see it as something other than our Lord intended. The Medieval Church’s practice of re-sacrificing our Lord as part of their Communion service[5] was initially proposed by a Benedictine monk named Radbertus in the 9th century, but was not formally approved until the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215. Nevertheless, ever since, it continues to offer up our Lord— sacrificing him again and again, as it were, “on cue”— in opposition to the expressed word of God as found in the Book of Hebrews (9:24-28).

While this and other errant practices— such as the use of icons, statuary, relics and monstrances— were viewed as instructional tools to educate the illiterate and the unlearned among the laity; all of the aforementioned items were and remain beyond the precincts of Scripture. Consider God’s second commandment, Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them(Exodus 20:4-5a). God has spoken and it is not subject to change by his creatures.

It is one thing to have God amend his word as noted in Acts 15:1-21 wherein we read that St. James then said, Men and brethren, hearken unto me: Simeon hath declared how God at first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: that the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world. Wherefore my sentence is that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: but that we write unto them that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. But it is something else entirely for men to amend God by their tradition (St. Matthew 15:1-11).

At first blush, it does seem strange indeed the Medieval Church would simply ignore the expressed will of God as noted Hebrews 10 concerning the nature of the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. But if one examines church history, one will discover that by 13th century, it had become the doorkeeper for interpreting the Holy Bible throughout much of Europe. There was no private interpretation of the scriptures by the laity, or even the lesser clergy. Every interpretation had to pass muster via the church hierarchy, and even then it was likely to be changed to conform to some new pope, or church council’s point of view. Ergo, the sound doctrine of one day could become the next’s new heresy. As Saint John wrote concerning the church at Pergamos in the Book of Revelation (2:14), Thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols… that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate. The Nicolaitanes were the precursors of the formal priesthood that lorded over the people. It was the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes which heralded the coming of the papacy. Therefore that which, in the church at Ephesus was more or less an administrative evil (2:6), had now become, in Pergamos, an accepted doctrine (2:15).

The doctrine of Balaam hearkens us back to the Book of Numbers (25:1-18) wherein the hireling prophet induced the Israelites to engage in idol worship and fornication, which angered God and resulted in not only the prophet’s death, but that of several thousand Israelites who had participated in his false worship. As one commentator put it, “The doctrine of Balaam was his teaching Balak to corrupt the people who could not be cursed by tempting them to marry women of Moab, defile their separation and abandon their pilgrim character. It is that union of the world and church which is spiritual unchastity.”

Given what we know about the history of the Medieval Church— particularly in its adoption of extra-biblical forms and practices— we can better understand why it had become like the scribes and Pharisees whom our Lord rebuked saying, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition… This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men (St. Matthew 15:3-8). Traditions within the Medieval Church, such as transubstantiation, originated in a time well apart from our own and that is what makes them so hard to root out. Also, it has not been slack in its teaching of these errors to every generation of its congregants since the time of their acceptance. And such explains why those erroneous doctrines and practices possess an aura of credibility. Finally, they are supported by the testimonies of men who possessed great learning and were reputed experts in the field of theology and bible languages. Who then can rightly question them today? What credibility will the critics of these traditions have against such a cadre of respected and learned scholars? Well, folks, you cannot make right what God in his word has said is wrong no matter how many letters you have following your last name, or what prefix you have before your first name. The words and numbers that matter are the chapter number and verse of a named canonical book of Scripture. That should be the measure of truth and nothing else.

It is important for us as born-again believers to follow the precepts of the written word of God. Both the early church and the Reformation church attempted to carry that message forward, and it is vitally important for all true and faithful Christians, regardless of their denominational brands, to be obedient to the expressed will of God. If we are engaging in false worship based upon false doctrines, then we are no different than Cain, or Korah or Nadab and Abihu. Will worship is not God worship. It is after all God who is sovereign. He has not left us without proper instruction. It would behoove us all to follow those things that are found within the Holy Bible, and not offer up to God those things which will impair our fellowship and endanger the salvation of others who might see our errors and embrace them as truth.

Let us pray,

F

ather, keep us from all false worship and idolatry, and guide us into the paths of righteous; for this we ask in the name of him who made one offering of himself for sin, and will come again in glory to rule as our King, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Saint Joseph of Arimathea Anglican Orthodox Church is under a lot of stress.  We all are, but they need even more prayer.  Rev Roger Jessup, their wonderful minister, had to retire as he was so pressed by the duties of a primary care giver, in addition to all the worries of this world.  Pray for trust in God for each member of the parish and for them to find economic relief.

Armed Forces & Contractors

Dustin (USAF – Stateside), Kristyna and Luis Aviles (Army – Fort Lewis, Washington), Airman Donny Patton (USAF – Hulbert Field, Florida), Jordan Brown (USMC – Fleet Marine Force – Pacific), Trevor Jennings (USAF – KC-10 Boom Operator – New Jersey), Trevor Di Marco (USN – Whidbey Island, EF-18 Pilot), Kurt Thomas (USN – Camp Foster, Okinawa), Ethan (US Army Airborne – Southwest Asia)

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

The Islamist group (ISIS) took over Quaragosh, the biggest Christian city in Iraq; 164 men, women and children were beheaded.  People ask where is God?  The real question is where are the people to enforce God’s will.  Pray the people of the world will see Allah for who he is, the Devil.  Pray for those who remain behind that they might find a way to safety.

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of “Separation of Church and State” in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

Education

Aaron is in need of God’s guidance to see what he needs to do to fulfill his potential and live his life in a manner which will bring true happiness to him.

Thomas Dabney is attending Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, to finish his Bachelor’s Degree.  Please pray for Thomas to focus on education and do his very best at school.

Various Special Requests

This is a horrible time for the people of India, Christians in particular; they are having problems with Hunger, Bank Closings, Transportation and Schools not functioning.  Pray for the Leaders and Members of our Church in Eluru Andhra Pradesh. Pray their basic needs will be met and God will be close to them in this time of need.

We ask that you pray, God that the Holy Ghost might give you insight into how you might make the lives of your friends and family better.  Remember helping others is not just those who you don’t know!

Thanksgiving

Frank Correia gives thanks for safe travel to Nepal where he was teaching various subjects to Christian ministers in that country.  The country is a 81 percent Hindu, 9 percent Buddist, 4 percent Muslim, 3 percent Kirata and a growing 1.4 percent Christian.

[1] Settled Science is a term used by people who have no idea as to any form of science and should be regarded as a preface or suffix to a lie.

[2] Drawing authority from God and following His Laws.

[3]Whose heart is ruled at best by whimsy and self interest, more likely from greed and the Prince of this World.

[4]James is a staunch patriot and lover of the American Way, and has spent much time and treasure in sharing artifacts and documents of our founding as a nation.
