Sunday Report

Today we celebrated the Tenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Forgiveness

When it comes to a question of our forgiving other people, it is partly the same and partly different. It is the same because, here also, forgiving does not mean excusing. Many people seem to think it does. They think that if you ask them to forgive someone who has cheated or bullied them you are trying to make out that there was really no cheating or no bullying. But if that were so, there would be nothing to forgive. They keep on replying, “But I tell you the man broke a most solemn promise. ” Exactly: that is precisely what you have to forgive. (This doesn’t mean that you must necessarily believe his next promise. It does mean that you must make every effort to kill every taste of resentment in your own heart—every wish to humiliate or hurt him or to pay him out.) The difference between this situation and the one in which you are asking God’s forgiveness is this. In our own case we accept excuses too easily; in other people’s we do not accept them easily enough.

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

Psalm 32:1

Make a chain: for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence. Wherefore I will bring the worst of the heathen, and they shall possess their houses: I will also make the pomp of the strong to cease; and their holy places shall be defiled. Destruction cometh; and they shall seek peace, and there shall be none.

Ezekiel 7:23-25

For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.

St. Matthew 24:7-8

The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

St. John 4:25-26

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine.

St. Titus 2:1

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 203-204, with the Collect first:

The Collect.

L

ET thy merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of thy humble servants; and, that they may obtain their petitions, make them to ask such things as shall please thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle came from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, the Twelfth Chapter beginning at the First Verse. Paul starts off by telling us that no man who “speaketh by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.”  He goes on to say, “Now there are diversities of gifts, but by the same Spirit.” “…it is the same God which worketh all in all.”  Every one is gifted in one manner or another by God, the question really is not do you have a gift from God, but will you use it?  Our gifts are so different in their character that we sometimes fail to recognize them for what they are, gifts from God, meant to be used, not ignored.

C

oncerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.  Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: but all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

Ttoday’s Holy Gospel started in the Nineteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the Forty-First Verse.

The Gospel tell of Jesus’ time in the temple wherein he sees the people selling their wares having made the temple a den of thieves rather than a house of prayer and cast them out.  He also predicts the fall of the temple saying it shall be laid “even with the ground, … they shall not leave one stone upon another,” because the people of the temple had rejected Jesus.  The message to those who accept Jesus and his teaching is clear, their temple shall not fall.  The message to those who will not hear his message will never be heard, let alone clear, their first indication of a problem will be when their temple falls.

Often people take this Gospel to preclude jumble sales at church.  It does not preclude that.  It does literally preclude cheating people at those jumble sales!  You must understand that the “perfect” sacrificial offerings to God the temple hawkers were selling were perfectly defective “sacrificial lambs” which would be recycled over and over.  Those buying were likely for the most part honest in their attempt to offer unto God that due Him, yet their effort was being diverted and redirected by those “in charge”, the priests and hawkers.  In their very successful effort to make money they were defrauding the people and insulting God in His own House.  It should also be pointed out that a church should be a place of worship.  It may be a Prophet Center, but not a Profit Center[1].  If the building needs constant commercial enterprise, then perhaps the emphasis is on the wrong center.  A church should be funded for its needs by its members and its wants should come much later, if not in fact unheeded.  A church is about Him, not about IT.

A

nd when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves. And he taught daily in the temple.

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon tied the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together.

Consider the words from the Collect, wherein we ask God to give us … be open to the prayers of thy humble servants; and, that they may obtain their petitions, make them to ask such things as shall please thee …

Once again, this Collect is kind of a follow-on to last week’s Collect.  First, we ask God to hear our prayers, this is funny in that He always listens intently to us when we pray and we very seldom listen to Him when He answers.  It is an odd paradox, He listens but we never seem to listen.  It seems as if at times we should pray that we should listen not Him, as He always listens! Nonetheless, we ask His help to ask for those things we need, not those things we want and are bad for us.  We need to be humble when we ask.

What does that word mean?

According to the dictionary, to be HUMBLE means to be:

  • Modest

  • Respectful

  • Lowly

Modest – unassuming in attitude and behavior

Respectful – feeling or showing respect and deference toward other people

Lowly – relatively low in rank and without pretensions

These are three characteristics that we do not possess in our natural, sinful state. We however can obtain these through asking the Holy Ghost to bring these attitudes into our hearts, souls and minds.  And not just asking, but we have to be willing to listen to what He says we should change within our lives. We cannot change what is our station in life, but we can change our attitude towards God.  He is God, we are not.  We are His creatures, imperfect with free will.  We must recognize that when we ask for His Help.  We badly need the guidance from the Holy Ghost so we can ask for what we need, instead of what we want.  NEED and WANT are two four letter words that are used too oft interchangeably that do not mean the same thing. People often use these four letter words erroneously, thinking they mean the same thing. They do not and cannot. Needs are vital for our spiritual health as well as physical health. Wants are nice things to have, but they are not vital for us to survive. When we think we “NEED” something, we have to ask if it fits the above definition “Is this vital for our ministry/life here on earth, or is it something just nice to have, but not a critical item?” We have to see if what we need is something we truly need, or just a want. Too many people do not perform this need analysis and as a result suffer for it physically and spiritually.

While our needs must be fulfilled, there is nothing wrong with wanting, just so long as you want things that are good for you. And as long as your want does not turn into coveting or wanting people’s stuff without being willing to work for it. We have to carefully monitor our wants and make sure that they are good for us and that we are wanting to work for whatever it is that we want.  Once again, we are asking God to help us to want the right things that will be good for us and help us develop in our Christian lives. Paul reminds us though each believer is different, throughout all the believing peoples of the Church the same God, the same Spirit, the same Christ works all in all and through all His work is done and accomplished. When we are setting off to do work for the church, we have to keep in mind that those believers we serve and help believe in the same God we do, and they are filled with the same spirit.

Paul reminds us we each have differing talents, but if we use them to the Glory of God, without concern for who gets the credit, all will be well. I can think of no finer example of this than the Marines serving on Peleliu with Eugene Sledge, in the 3rd Batallion/5th Marines.  I was reading his memoir, With the Old Breed, when I realized in my reading, none of the Marines he served with cared a bit who got a credit, all they cared about was helping their fellow Marines accomplish the objective. They didn’t do what they felt like, at least not the good ones. They did what was right without thought as to who would get the credit. Their main thoughts were to work as a team to defeat the Japanese. We must work in the same manner with our fellow Christians, using each of our talents to further His work and to defeat the forces of Satan. God has given us all each unique talents to be used to further His Mission. Together, our talents can help us as the Body of Christ serve and glorify Him on Earth.

Do what you can, not what you feel like. Ignore what you feel like doing and do what God wants you to do. We will profit from doing what God wants more than if we did what we just felt like doing. This is hard for us to grasp, but it will help us in the long term if we do what He asks, instead of doing what we want. What we feel like doing often does not align with what God wants for us, which can result in negative consequences for us. However, if we do what He wants for us, there will be positive consequences. It is a simple message, yet one that can be hard to swallow sometimes, but it is a message that must be swallowed all the same.

If you will but read the Bible, what God wants you to do will be clear.  If you do your best to do His Will all will be well with you.  Death is a pretty hollow threat if you do your duty. If you have done your best, that is at the end of the day, you have done your best to follow Him, then truly you have nothing to fear. The people of Jerusalem would not have been in the pickle they got in when 70AD came along, had they only done what God wanted.  But, it was too hard for them.  These were of course the descendants of the people who defied God in the wilderness for 40 years, they were a stubborn and stiff-necked people. They were blinded by their stubbornness to change. They could not see what God wanted for them or now for us.  In 70AD, what had been so hard seemed pretty easy compared to the fix they were in, but by then it was too late.  By that time they were left with only “There are none so poor as cannot purchase a noble death.”  But, for most of them by that time they had no will.  It left when they failed to follow God’s Will.

It is an object lesson for us, to do what we can in the here and now and not worry about tomorrow. And also we shouldn’t complain if it is too hard for us, because being on God’s side, nothing is too hard for us. We should ignore these thoughts and turn our attentions to what God wants for us. We must learn from the past mistakes of our spiritual forebears and resolve not to repeat those same mistakes. If we are ignorant of our spiritual past, we are doomed to make those very same mistakes.

When Luke wrote of the sales in the temple, he had a point.  The point was not to preclude jumble sales at church.  He was not abhorring the sales, but the cheating in the name of God.   This Gospel does literally preclude cheating people at those jumble sales!  You must understand the temple hawkers were selling perfect defective “sacrificial lambs” which would be recycled over and over[2].  In their very successful effort to make money they were defrauding the people and insulting God in His own House.  It should also be pointed out that a church should be a place of worship.  It may be a Prophet Center, but not a Profit Center[3].  Similar sounding words, but a totally different meaning for the church.  If the building needs constant commercial enterprise, then perhaps the emphasis is on the wrong center. All of these churches that emphasize quantity over quality should be suspect. It does not matter the quantity, as long as you have a base of quality believers that serve the One Triune God. We need to be concerned more about the spreading of His Word, the constant truth, then focusing on how many people we can attract, and how the message can be changed to suit them. These are both problems with the modern churches today. A church should be funded for its needs by its members and its wants should come much later, if not in fact unheeded.  A church is about Him, not about IT. It should not be a self-licking ice cream cone, but a center to help the believers walk in Christ, not focusing on physical and material plant on earth, but on helping us on our own “Pilgrim’s Progress” towards heaven. If it focuses on anything but that, it is a stumbling block to believers.  We are not called to be a stumbling block, but to be guides, to be lanterns shining in the darkness, to be as a light cloud amidst the darkness of this world.

Do what you are supposed to do when you are supposed to do it.  That is duty.  It does not matter how you “feel” about black or white.  Black is black; White is white.  Do your duty. Work as hard as you can, do the best you can, trust in the Lord.  By the way, cheat no one.  If you follow that, you won’t need to be told, “Particularly in God’s House.”

Action counts.  For by their actions ye shall know them.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

The Tenth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

L

ET thy merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of thy humble servants; and, that they may obtain their petitions, make them to ask such things as shall please thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A

nd when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him, And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.

In today’s gospel there are three distinct issues.  In these eight short verses Jesus not only foretells the immediate future of Jerusalem, he also sets the stage for the implementation of the final phase of his earthly mission.  That is really quite a lot for such a short passage of scripture.

First

In the first four verses of this selection, Jesus weeps for the coming pain and destruction of the city and her peoples. He warns those living there that the time is coming that will bring total destruction up to the point of leveling the very temple he was set to visit.  In an interesting note when the Siege of Jerusalem occurs some forty years after Christ’s ascension a majority of Christian residents of the city will flee to safety. These folk will have remembered to words of Christ about this coming disaster.  You need to read Matthew 24:1-20, in this passage Jesus gives stunning details about the coming destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple.

Second

When Jesus enters into the outer courtyard of the Temple he sees the money-changers booths and tables. This system was set up to keep the Temple holy and clean.  Everyday money was a mixed bag of various coins of copper, silver and gold.  Most coins were minted by whatever power or government in charge at the time. Many coins bore the images of pagan symbols, gods, or even rulers or emperors.  Since all of this money was in all manner of trade and commerce there could be no guarantee it had not been used for ill repute or bad things.

So in order to make sure any offering or money placed in the Temple coffers was “clean” there was an exchange system set up.  A worshiper brought money to the money-changers who would change the “dirty” money for Temple coins, at a “slight” fee, then the worshiper could place the Temple money into the offering box without fear of making the Temple unclean.    Jesus was angry about fees charged to change the money. Because what should have been an exact exchange of pagan coin for temple coin was in fact becoming a crooked business.  Travelers and annual worshipers were being cheated out of their fair exchange by being charged higher fees.  That is why Jesus said “it is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.”   It is obvious Jesus knew what the money-changers were doing.  So in a sweeping indictment, Jesus condemns the money-changers, but also by imputation, the temple workers too. They knew what the money-changers were doing and in fact may have been getting some kickbacks from the fees also.  Over and over again, Jesus points out the rot and corruption that had seeped into the Temple system.  There were a few faithful, but most were only there for the goods they could procure for themselves.  Remember this is nothing new.  Remember the High Priest Eli?  His two sons were corrupt.  It would take the adopted son Samuel to bring reform to the priestly system at the time of King Saul and King David.

Third

The final part of this brief passage concerns the eventual arrest, trial and execution of Jesus by the corrupt authorities of the Temple system.   Daily Jesus taught the regular folk in the temple.  He was finishing up his earthly mission, filling in the gaps that the folk in the city of Jerusalem may not have had opportunity to hear when Jesus was journeying through the land.

The corrupt folk of the temple system wanted to destroy him, he was ruining their economic means and was also challenging their authority, especially in the spiritual realm.  Jesus teachings were simple and direct. He was reaching all levels of society with the Word. The hierarchy was looking for a way to take him out, but couldn’t do it during the daily teachings. There were too many people listening.  As the scripture says “for all the people were very attentive to hear him.”

It would take a betrayal, a late night arrest and the cover of darkness to do the deed. Very apropos to say the least. Evil exists in darkness, evil avoids the brightness of Truth and the light, it must operate in shadow and subterfuge.

The simple truth to our passage of scripture from Luke 19 is Jesus is in control. He knows the future, he knows the truth and reveals it. It is he and he alone who is our Savior. He is our Truth, He is our Future.  All we need to do is heed his warning, pour over and read his Word, daily.  Notice the teachings were daily. We too must daily seek the Lord where he may be found. Where is that?  Why it is in this very Word of God we know as the Bible.  Folks we need to come back to the Word and learn the simple truth of God. He loves us, He gave us His only Begotten Son to die in our place upon the Cross. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father but by Him, Jesus Christ the Lord.  Is He your Lord and Savior?  Ask Him today to be your Savior.

Let us pray:

O

 gracious Father, it is of thy great mercy, that another day is added to our lives; We here dedicate both our souls and our bodies to thee and thy service, in a sober, righteous, and godly life: in which resolution, do thou, O merciful God, confirm and strengthen us; that, as we grow in age, we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.   Amen.

O

 God, who knowest the weakness and corruption of our nature, and the manifold temptations which we daily meet with; We humbly beseech thee to have compassion on our infirmities, and to give us the constant assistance of thy Holy Spirit; that we may be effectually restrained from sin, and incited to our duty. Imprint upon our hearts such a dread of thy judgments, and such a grateful sense of thy goodness to us, as may make us both afraid and ashamed to offend thee. And, above all, keep in our minds a lively remembrance of that great day, in which we must give a strict account of our thoughts, words, and actions to him whom thou hast appointed the Judge of quick and dead, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

A

lmighty God, we beseech thee to continue thy gracious protection to us this coming night. Defend us from all dangers and mischiefs, and from the fear of them; that we may enjoy such refreshing sleep as may fit us for the duties of the coming day. And grant us grace always to live in such a state that we may never be afraid to die; so that, living and dying, we may be thine, through the merits and satisfaction of thy Son Christ Jesus, in whose Name we offer up these our imperfect prayers.    Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Tenth Sunday after Trinity

I Corinthians 12:1-11

In today’s epistle Paul spoke of the various gifts of the Spirit given exclusively to those who have been born again in Christ Jesus, and which also includes a particular vocation or life’s work (I Corinthians 7:20-22; Ephesians 4:1). And as part of our labors, our Lord expects us to live quiet lives within our communities and refrain from behaviors provoking or instigating troubles (see I Thessalonians 4:11; I St. Timothy 2:2). The apostle Peter noted in his first epistle (2:11-17) Christians ought to be mindful of their civic behavior because that is God’s will for them. So it follows if we are to carry out our specific gifts and talents, we must daily examine ourselves and then ask God to assist us in our Christian walk.

Throughout his earthly ministry, our Lord taught and preached the truth of God’s word to the house of Israel. He had been sent to seek and save the lost. He came to serve rather than to be served. He knew that he had a limited time to carry out his task and as an old educator would say, “he used his time wisely.” And the same is true for all who are called of God as we have only a limited time in which to work in this life. But working in any occupation requires a skill or talent which, as we have learned from our epistle lesson, we may not all possess. Also, it would be unrealistic for God to expect from us what we do not have the capacity to perform in his service. And so it is incumbent on each of us to know what spiritual gifts we possess, and to exercise them in a thoughtful manner.

Now comes the “Sixty-Four Thousand Dollar Question”: “What is my particular God-given gift and vocation?” This question can be, at first blush, rather perplexing because God’s gifts and callings are not instinctively known. While there are exceptions to this rule, nevertheless most people will have to undergo a period of spiritual discernment; beseeching God through prayer to enlighten them as to their particular gifts and callings.

For instance, some years back, I served as an adjunct professor of History for several community colleges. I knew my job was temporary as those institutions would eventually replace me with someone who possessed a doctorate in my field. And sure enough, a few years later I was replaced with a person who possessed a higher credential. Nevertheless, I was disappointed I had not been selected to serve as a full-time instructor as that had been my dream occupation well before I ever entered college. Eventually, I came to understand why God had closed that door and it was through prayerful discernment that I became aware of his purposeful will for me. I had to submit to his regime before I could be amenable to his will. I had to be stripped of my will and my desires in order that I might better serve him instead of serving myself. To paraphrase one of my former professors: “God will open the doors he wants you to enter, and he will likewise close the ones that would take you from hi s plan and purpose for your life.”

Our Lord was well aware of his calling in God’s service. He knew that he must first preach and minister to the children of Israel. He knew that his ultimate service was to suffer and die for the sins of the whole world. He also knew that he had been called to rise from death to life eternal and to ascend to right hand of the Father and serve as our intercessor. And he knew that in the future he would return to this world as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

So how can we know what God has in mind for us? St. Paul gave us that answer in his epistle to the Romans (8:16). The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. And in another portion of that epistle (Romans 12:2) he wrote, And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. To the Ephesian church (4:1-12) he advised, I… beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called… but unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ… And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.

Many in the church today do not realize that God has called believers into specific areas of service. If we are his, we will endeavor to discern his will via our prayerful petitions to his throne of grace. We will ask him to guide us into those paths which he has foreordained we should walk in (Ephesians 2:10).

And do not think for one moment as a regenerate person in Christ you can ignore His calling to service. Take the story of Jonah for instance. Jonah received a commission to preach in the capital of the Assyrian Empire. Instead, Jonah headed west on a ship bound for a Phoenician port on the shores of either Cyprus or Spain. The prophet was well aware of the nature of the Assyrians. In his time (circa 800 B.C.), they were in the early stages of conquering much of the Middle East. They were well known for their brutality and their merciless treatment of those whom they had conquered. So when the word of the LORD came to Jonah that he should go and preach repentance to the Assyrians, he did what most people in his time would likely have done apart from a divine calling. He went the other way.

Running away from God is a proverbial “lost cause” as God is sovereign over his creation, and his words become reality the moment he speaks them. Jonah thought he could run away and that God would simply call someone else. He was wrong. And God taught the prophet an important lesson about his nature. He made it clear that when he calls an individual to a particular purpose, he expects obedience to that calling (see Exodus 23:21, 22; Deuteronomy 11:26, 27; 13:4; 30:1-10; Romans 6:11-17). And we know from Scripture that after three days and nights in the belly of that fish, Jonah prayed for deliverance and was then spit out on some unnamed beach. Once again on dry land, the Bible tell us, the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time saying Arise, go unto Nineveh and Jonah did as the LORD commanded.

Are there Ninevehs in your life? Are there places you would rather not go and people you would rather not see? God calls his own to serve him, and he will provide them with those talents which will bear fruit in his service. Jonah’s ministry to Nineveh resulted in repentance and acceptance of God. And God wants as many as will listen to hear his word regardless of whether they are in Nineveh or else where. So when God calls, we need to be ever mindful that his grace is all sufficient and his reasons are paramount (II Corinthians 3:5). It should be a comforting thought for us that unlike Jonah our Lord did not run away in the face of adversity. While he prayed that the cup of trouble might be taken from him, he went forth to Calvary with these words which he prayed unto the Father: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done(St. Luke 22: 42). As God had predestined Christ to his calling, so he has a plan and purpose for every regenerate person.

God has left it for us to properly discern the specifics of our calling in this life. Let us seek the Lord and learn from the Holy Ghost just what we have been called to perform in his service. And afterwards, let us also abide in our respective callings and go to wherever the Spirit leads us rather than suffering under God’s discipline by spending time in the belly of trouble because we thought that God would get someone else. We should ever seek to be like Isaiah and Samuel in our responses to God’s calling, Here am I; send me, and Speak; for thy servant heareth (see Isaiah 6:8; I Samuel 3:10).

Let us pray,

F

ather forgive us and cleanse us of our willful and prideful natures; and give us hearts which are inclined to serve thee and not ourselves; that we might live our lives in agreement with thy word and commandment, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; for these things we ask in the name of him who came into this world agreeable to thy will even thine only begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

[1]A fine set of very apropos terms I first heard from Bishop Dennis Campbell in 2011.

[2]The concept of being truthful in the efforts we make to spread The Word is not a separate subject by any means, but would take more time to talk about than we have time for here.  Suffice it to say that we must take every care to spread The Truth and not what our audience, whoever that may be, would like to hear.  When we bring our “sacrifice” to the “temple” we need make certain it is in fact as perfect as we can make it.  This is so hard that one of the recurring themes of the Collects is asking for guidance to ask for the right things.

[3]A term I first heard from Bishop Dennis Campbell in 2011.  It was a great thought then and a great thought now!

[4]GHQ – General Headquarters – In this case, the facility which serves as the central coordination point for the Anglican Orthodox Church Worldwide Communion as well as is populated by Saint Peter’s Parish, a parish of the AOC.  This is where the support staff work and the only full time people in the United States.  We use whatever funds we get for God’s work, not ours.
