Sunday Report

Today we celebrated the Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

The Future

When we are planning for posterity, we ought to remember that virtue is not hereditary.

Thomas Paine

Common Sense, 1776

Government

I think we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious.

Thomas Jefferson

On how to rehearse for death and how to diminish fear.

17 June 1963

Pain is terrible, but surely you need not have fear as well? Can you not see death as the friend and deliverer? It means stripping off that body which is tormenting you: like taking off a hair- shirt or getting out of a dungeon. What is there to be afraid of? You have long attempted (and none of us does more) a Christian life. Your sins are confessed and absolved. Has this world been so kind to you that you should leave it with regret? There are better things ahead than any we leave behind.

Remember, though we struggle against things because we are afraid of them, it is often the other way round—we get afraid be- cause we struggle. Are you struggling, resisting? Don’t you think Our Lord says to you ‘Peace, child, peace. Relax. Let go. Underneath are the everlasting arms. Let go, I will catch you. Do you trust me so little?’

Of course, this may not be the end. Then make it a good rehearsal.

Yours (and like you a tired traveller near the journey’s end)

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.

Psalm 23:1

Ye are bought with a price, be not ye the servants of men.

I Corinthians 7:23

Those who are fond of telling us in modern times that kindness and love are sufficient to regenerate man and keep man good, are always forgetting the mighty lesson that is taught us by the history of the Jews. The corruption of man is a far worse disease than your modern philosophers suppose. Israel was surrounded by mercies and loving kindness: yet Israel fell. Let that never be forgotten.

Many today will believe what men write and say about the Bible, before they will believe the Bible itself… the political and religious tyranny of the Dark Ages was only possible as long as the scriptures were interpreted for the people by a priest class of language scholars, who burned vernacular versions when they could. Cults characterized by the fact that, while recognizing the Bible as a noble book, they move its authority on to something else… It is invariably something or someone that purports to reveal what the Bible really means. What better way to deceive people than to tell them that they can not read the actual word of God for themselves.

It appears we have appointed our worst generals to command forces, and our most gifted and brilliant to edit newspapers. In fact, I discovered by reading newspapers that these editor geniuses plainly saw all my strategic defects from the start, yet failed to inform me until it was too late. Accordingly, I’m readily willing to yield my command to these obviously superior intellects, and I’ll, in turn, do my best for the cause by writing editorials, after the fact.

We live in a culture of betrayal. Ethics do not matter – only the law does. And the rule of law… has replaced the rule of truth, justice and ethics… A small- time criminal acts against the law. A medium criminal evades the law, while a big- time criminal commits his crime by means of the law…

The turn will come when we entrust the conduct of our affairs to the men who understand that their first duty as public officials is to divest themselves of the power that they have been given. It will come when Americans, in hundreds of communities throughout the nation, decide to put the man in office who is pledged to enforce the Constitution and restore the Republic. Who will proclaim in a campaign speech: ‘I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel the old ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is needed before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents’ interests, I shall reply that I was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am doing the very best I can.’

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 210-211, with the Collect first:

The Collect.

K

EEP, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy Church with thy perpetual mercy; and, because the frailty of man without thee cannot but fall, keep us ever by thy help from all things hurtful, and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Epistle came from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, the Sixth Chapter, beginning at the Eleventh Verse. Paul continues to warn us of the conflict in our lives between the things valued here on earth and those valued by the forces of heaven (God).  Writing to the Gentiles in Galatia, using to the rite of circumcision as a symbol for all of The Law, he warns, “As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.”  Those who are every eager to have you follow “The Law” themselves fail to follow its intent.  Paul goes on to say that Jesus’ new covenant transcends The Law and The Law no longer has hold over man.  For in Jesus there is salvation, may “the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.”

Y

E see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand. As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

Today’s Holy Gospel was written in the Sixth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning at the Twenty-Fourth Verse. Jesus tells us, “No man can serve two masters …Ye cannot serve God and mammon[1].”  There is only one first place, only one can be in that place.  We either place God in first place or we put something else there.  If we wish riches in this world as the most important thing in our life, we place the things of this world in first place.  If we follow our Lord Jesus and His instruction, we place God in that first place.  But, what of this world?  “Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment? Behold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much more value than they?”  Jesus tells us not to worry, for worry is of no positive value.  When faced with a problem, we must do our best, not merely claim to do our best, and trust in God.  For, “which of you by being anxious can add one cubit unto the measure of his life?” God knows we have need of the things of this world while we are in it, he knows we worry about, “What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?”  If we first seek “His kingdom, and His righteousness” He will take care of all our necessities.  But we must do as He asks, not merely say we are doing so.  If you follow God’s directions, you will be wealthy beyond description.  While you will never be “Bill Gates” rich, you will never lack what you need on this earth or in the world to come.

Jesus tells us, “Be not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”  We are not to worry, but to our best and let the morrow come as it will.  We are to do our best, not merely say we are doing our best.  For if we truly do our best, then that is all that can be done and there is no point in worrying.

Using an earlier phrase, Trust in God and Dread Naught.

N

O man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment? Behold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit unto the measure of his life? And why are ye anxious concerning raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Be not therefore anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? For after all these things do the Gentiles seek; for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Be not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Matthew 6:24-34

We see throughout the Holy Bible that we are presented a choice between two realities:

There are but two families upon the earth:

1)      the family God

2)      the family of the damned

There were Two Trees in the Garden:

1)      the Tree of Life representing Jesus Christ

2)      the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil representing The Law which cannot save us

There are but two paths, one of which we all shall travel:

  1. The straight and narrow Matt 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

  2. Broad Way filled with people and going down to destruction Matt 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait1 gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

And now, the Lord has pointed out two Masters, only one of which we can claim as our own:

  1.

  2. God whose yoke is light and easy to be born Matt 11:28 -30  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you,1 and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

And the way of Mammon (worldly riches): Matt 13:22 –

  1. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

  2.

We ask ourselves, in moments of greed and weakness: “Could I not claim this bit of unearned wealth and still be gracious unto God?” The answer of course is always no. Any thing ill-gotten cannot satisfy a Holy God.

But we must go into the matter still further than that: Anything gotten outside the will of God cannot please Him – honestly acquired or otherwise.

The determinate principle is our motive in the getting and using of our possessions, and the manner with which we view them.

Let us examine verses 25-32 with a view of gleaning the deeper meaning our Lord conveys therein:

Christ is telling us that there are two ways with which to view the future.

    1. He certainly does not mean we should not exercise due foresight in providing for our families, our professions, our education, our food, etc.

    2. Foresight aids us in our daily walk with the Lord.

    3. We have our Bible study plans,

    4. our General Conventions,

    5. our Morning/Evening Worship,

    6. Our Holy Communion Service,

    7. Our family budgets –

All these things are results of careful planning and foresight. They free our minds of worry and undue concern so that we can concentrate our thoughts on Christ – morning, noonday, and evening.

But neither does He mean that we should view the future in fear and foreboding.

Foresight and foreboding are two very different things. Each opposed to the other:

  1. The more a man looks forward in the exercise of foresight, the less he does so in the exercise of foreboding.

  1. And the more he is tortured by anxious thoughts about a possible future, the less clear vision has he of a likely future, and the less power to influence it.

When Christ here, therefore, enjoins the abstinence from thought for our life and for the future, it is not for the sake of getting away from the pressure of a very unpleasant command that we say, He does not mean to prevent the exercise of wise and provident foresight and preparation for what is to come.

John 10:10 The idea is, therefore, that here it is forbidden for a Christian,

  1. not the careful preparation for what is likely to come,

  2. not the foresight of the storm and taking in sail while yet there is time, but we are herein counseled against the constant occupation and distraction of the heart with gazing forward,

  3. and fearing and being weakened thereby;

  4. or to come back to words already used, foresight is commanded, and, therefore, foreboding is forbidden.

Why does Christ tell us these things regarding our love for Mammon?

Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?’ (v 25)

LIFE! The object of our faith in Christ is not the material riches He will bestow upon us, but LIFE itself – and that eternal.

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly(John 10:10)

When we are born into this world, we must depend upon our mothers and fathers to provide our every need. In fact, they gave us life as ministers of the Creator God.

As children of our parents, we inherit all that our parents have – a nice home, good and fresh meals, clothes to cover our nakedness, careful protection – all come- not through our labors, but as a result of to whom we belong as children.

Without our parents to love and care for us when we are young, what prospect would we have for the future? The worries of all our necessities do not belong to the child, but the parent.

So likewise with the Christian. He allows God to do his worrying and accepts the life offered through the Redeeming Blood of Christ. That is our means to life, and our assurance of the future life in Eternity.

Seek first to be born into the Kingdom of God (just as you were all born into loving, caring families here on earth) and all your necessities will be provided – ALL!

Just as your good parents know what things you have need of, so does the Heavenly Father know your needs and desires.

No one in this church has parents that will not provide food and clothing to them. Because of the bond of love a parent has for his/her children, just so much more love does the Father in Heaven have for you.

Not only does the Father love you with an unending Love, but He is one who is able to enforce that Love through the gifts of His Heart to you who love Him.

And why do we love Him?

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us(1 John 4:18-19)

Who is your God? Mammon or God the Father?

Do you love the things of this world: parties, fashions, money, romance ……… anything … more than you Father in Heaven?

Do you spend more time thinking on the vain and material than you do about the one who created you?

Serious questions for a serious matter……..

Be sober;  be vigilant;  because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion,walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast1 in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect,1 stablish, strengthen, settle you.  (1 Peter 5:8-10)

He will promise you the world, but in the end, destroy your soul.

Turn to God each waking moment, for it is who is able  Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost1 that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.  (Hebrews 7:25)

Mammon or God? Which is it in your life?

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon tied the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and talked, as is oft the case, of the need for action, not simply diction.

Consider the words of the Collect, “… Keep … thy Church with thy perpetual mercy; and … keep us ever by thy help from all things hurtful, and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation …”

When the Collect talks about the church, it is not talking about buildings; it is talking about us.  Each of us; all of us.  We need God’s Mercy and Grace to keep us from desiring those things that are bad for us and help us to see we really want those things that are good for us.

Speaking of things, just like the Jewish based Christians of Paul’s time, it often seems like everyone has secret rituals, handshakes or hoops they want you to jump through to be really IN.  Paul reminds us that all fall short, and special fancy diets, days or outfits do not change us.  God does not require any sort of fancy diet, days or outfits to be IN with Him. All He asks that we believe on Him and His Son Jesus and do our best to follow Him.  None of these fancy rituals that churches have are keys to salvation. It is only by the Grace of God through our Lord Jesus that we find real salvation.  Our salvation is not based on the ritual, the handshake or even the slice of the circumcision scalpel.  It is based on Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection that we might have eternal life, not some rituals. He is the key to our salvation. He does not require for us to have any fancy garb or rituals, only to remember His death and passion that we might be partakers of His Heavenly Kingdom. He does not ask for much, only this simple thing, we believe on Him, which is the key to getting into heaven. His Faith saves us, and we have to have faith in Him that He did those things, and act upon that faith.

Our salvation comes one way, by the Grace of God through our Lord Jesus.  He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Nobody comes to the Father but by Him. He is our salvation. His faith has saved us and made us whole, not our faith. But we need to act for Him to show that we have faith in Him. It is not through us to decide the salvation, but by God through His Son, who died for our sins. This is what the whole Gospel is based upon. This is the solid foundation, as Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of our faith. We are not Cranmerians, nor are we Calvinists or Lutherans, but we are Christians primarily, who like the ideas of Cranmer, et al. We should never be identified as followers of man but of Christ and God. When one becomes a follower of man, he ends up following the devil in a fashion; for if we serve ourselves, or follow ourselves, we tend up to end up in death.  But if we follow Him, we have the gift of life as St. Paul explains “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23 KJV)

The problem with the folks that identify themselves as something other than Christian, is they start to believe on more of the ideas of the person they are following, than the ideas of Jesus Christ and God, whom they are supposed to be following. They get lost in the theological rabbit hole and wander so far back, they’ve gone past where they were supposed to be, and got lost off the narrow uphill trail towards heaven, and on the wide downhill trail towards hell instead. It is so easy to get lost in the ideas of the various theologians, even in that of John Calvin and Zwingli, that you forget that they were doing their best to be known as followers of Christ. They would frown upon those who identify themselves as Calvinists or Zwinglians, and not primarily Christians.

It does not matter whose theology you like the best, but what does matter is that you follow Scripture and God and Jesus Christ. In the end that is what will matter, not whose ideas you liked the best. Calvin’s ideas nor Luther’s ideas can save, only Christ and God’s actions and words can save us and heal our souls. We must be dependent on God and not man for our earthly guidance.

We alone cannot enter into heaven without His help. We are imperfect creatures with free will, with a tendency to choose the wrong thing at the wrong time. We really need His help to get into heaven, and His help here on earth as well. We also need the help of the third God guy, the Holy Ghost. But, in order to have their help, we have to be dedicated to serving God, and not Man. If we focus on serving Man and not God, we do not have the Holy Ghost within us.

For the Holy Ghost would never have us listen to the ideas of man and not God. So we must take care and review what the leaders of the church say, for there are many who are not listening to God, but only care to please Men to get them to come into their churches. These men are the false prophets Christ has spoken of who disguise themselves as sheep to infiltrate the Church. As the times march on, there will be more of these false Prophets. In the end, people will have to choose who they want to serve, God or Man.

That brings us to Saint Matthew’s point, one cannot serve two masters.  Like that bad pun, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”  You cannot travel both paths.  We must choose who we will serve: God or the world.  If we chose God, that does not mean we turn our back on the world around us, but rather we interface with the world using the Rules of Engagement given to us by our Lord.  We prioritize our actions with Him first.  Our family motto; God • Honor • Country • Family is an example of this prioritization.  First things first.  Build from the inside out and the bottom up.  Do not mistake this motto for perfection, we have erred and strayed from our ways like every lost sheep, probably farther than most.  But we know which way is The Way and keep correcting back on course.

Prioritization can be as a simple as coming home early on Saturday night so that you get a good night’s sleep and are ready for the Sunday church service.  It can be as complex as leaving a job that interferes with your honoring God, Country or Family.  First things first. God can help you make that decision; but you have to make it, He can’t make it for you.  He will not force use to make that decision, you on your own free will, will have to make that conscious decision and effort. The Holy Ghost will give you guidance on that front, but you will have to listen and it will be your responsibility to listen and then act upon that guidance.

Throughout the Bible we are exhorted to respect God, be honorable, work hard and take care of our families.  If we do these things, following God’s Will, our fiscal standing here on earth will be sound.  Follow these precepts, you will never be lacking, but you will never be inordinately wealthy, “Bill Gates rich” so to speak.  For to do that requires reprioritization to wealth in the first place.  Replacing allegiance to God with allegiance to wealth is a one way ticket to a destination you don’t want. Allegiance to God is a more precious and valuable thing to have, for with it comes a priceless gift, eternal life. Eternal life is a gift that mankind has been seeking for the ages, but has not found.  But Jesus Christ offers that gift to us, as long as we follow Him to the best of our ability.

The last part of this reading is the one we often have the most trouble with.   We are far too ready to borrow trouble from tomorrow.  Every day, I pray at least twice for help with this.  It is getting better; I am confident on one thoughtful level no good comes of worry, yet I have such a hard time acting on that thought. It is a very difficult thing not to worry, but it is something that needs to be done nonetheless. I find as I trust God more and act upon His will more, I worry less. There is a correlation there I believe. It is a very hard thing to do, but it must be done, to ensure our success in spreading the Gospel and being an effective minister of God. Plus, worrying less will provide other benefits as well, and help us to lead happier lives. When we do what God asks, doing our best and not just saying it, there is not a lot to worry about. Even if there is, we can relax, knowing God has everything under control and He will always give us guidance on how to proceed.

God wants you to be happy; He knows what will make you happy.  God does not mind if you have fun along the way, but never pursue fun confusing it with happiness.  In the end, you won’t find either.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

The Gospel

Matthew 6: 24-34

Today we reflect on two seemingly divergent texts.  St. Paul was writing about what seemed to be an ongoing issue, the need to fall into line with the prevailing thought or theology.  The only problem was the misunderstanding of the foreshadowing aspect of Old Testament ceremony and prophecy and the inception of the New Covenant {testament}.  The majority of believers at this early stage of the church were converted Jews. They were coming into this new life offered by the once and for all sacrifice of the Only begotten Son of God; in doing so they were bringing many practices and beliefs from the Old Covenant.  Paul, later Peter and others began to write to the effect that these “judizing” practices were no longer valid since the One who was prophesied and shown in foreshadowing ceremony and tabernacle/temple models had come.  Jesus Christ, by uttering his last words on the Cross, “it is finished”, closed the Old Testament and opened the New.   Animal blood sacrifice was no longer needed and no longer valid, the separation of the Holy of Holies from man was no longer valid, all of this was swept away by the once and for all sacrifice of God’s Only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, upon the Cross.   Finished, complete, over, it was time to stop doing that which fell short of satisfaction of sin, because He satisfied once and for all that sin on the Cross.

St. Paul very clearly writes about this new way.  He chides those who are trying to turn back to the old way of doing things, not because they are old, but because they are no longer valid.  Now before we go down that road, we are talking about the message and meaning of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, not changing the meaning of the Word of God.  Sin is still sin, that does not go away, it is just how we are justified in our sin, now that Christ has done this great work.

Revisionist and post-modern thinkers will try and slip into the tent and say that since the Old Testament ways were swept away, then should the mores and societal concepts also be removed.

Jesus never taught that, Paul, Peter, John, never taught that.  The concept of family was never re-engineered, the aspect of sin against oneself or others was never put aside, none of this happened.

In fact, the early Christians championed the family, they lived the life of one husband and one wife, children to be cared for by family, orphans and widows were to cared for and protected.  None of this suggested a redefined family unit.

In Paul’s letter to the church at Galacia, he is only writing about the change that has come about in the Cross of Christ.  He was definitely writing against the idea of “keeping up appearances” in the sense that you had to maintain that which was no longer valid.  Period.

When Jesus addressed the idea of faith as it pertained to trying to keep up with what the world considered important, he uses Creation to teach us a vital lesson.

The key to this lesson is not trying to serve two masters.  There will always be conflict. You can’t serve one without hating the other, you can’t love one without despising the other.

The two masters?  God and mammon {earthly cares and worries}

Jesus gently points out to us that we really can’t do anything to add to our physical nature, we can’t wish ourselves more height.  The faith aspect of this of course deals with our daily needs. Food, clothing, shelter, Jesus uses Solomon as an example. He had everything, finest of clothes, best food, and yet he wasn’t dressed out in the colors and hues of a simple field lily. The lily Jesus was referring to was common in the land, and yet it was beautiful compared to what Solomon had worn.

Birds don’t farm, they don’t reap the fields they tend, they don’t store up food in silos or granaries, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Don’t worry about your next meal, don’t fret about what to wear, “…shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith…?”

Jesus is really speaking to our spiritual needs.  He is teaching us to stop being like the Gentiles, who seek and obsess about food, clothing, and over all appearances, what the World thinks of them.  Jesus tells us to stop this foolish quest, instead he tell us to “…seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you…”

Now mind you Jesus is talking about needs not wants.  That is where the “prosperity gospel” folk go off in the wrong direction.  They treat God and Jesus as cosmic bellhops or take out service, ask your desires, God will deliver.  Wrong, wrong, wrong.  We must seek FIRST the kingdom of God and his righteousness….then all these things shall be added unto you.

Beloved are we sometimes guilty of asking God for things or situations that we want instead of waiting upon the Lord for things we need?   Examine yourself and see if this may be true. Bear in mind there is nothing we can do to add to our stature, how much hair on our heads or add some extra hours to our day, all of this is set, in fact predestined.  David wrote about how God knew him before he was conceived, he knew him as he was developing in his mother’s womb, he knew David beforehand; that sounds like predestined knowledge.   God knows what we need. Wait upon the Lord.  Notice the post script Jesus leaves us with: Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Let us wait upon the Lord.  It is in his time not ours.  We need to stop worrying about keeping up appearances, stop worrying what the world thinks, just serve the Lord and be at peace.

Let us pray:

O

 GRACIOUS Father, we humbly beseech thee for thy holy Catholic Church; that thou wouldst be pleased to fill it with all truth, in all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in anything it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, establish it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of him who died and rose again, and ever liveth to make intercession for us, Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord.   Amen.

A

LMIGHTY God, our Heavenly Father, who hast committed to thy Holy Church the care and nurture of thy children; Enlighten with thy wisdom those who teach and those who learn; that, rejoicing in the knowledge of thy truth, they may worship thee and serve thee from generation to generation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A

LMIGHTY God, the fountain of all wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask, and our ignorance in asking; We beseech thee to have compassion upon our infirmities; and those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, vouchsafe to give us, for the worthiness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity

In todays gospel our Lord say, No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.  At first glance our Lord is talking about wealth, but anything which takes the place of the Godhead in our lives is a potential master seeking to dethrone the true Master of our souls. In St. Paul’s time there were those unregenerate amongst the Jews who tried to impose an unnecessary adherence to Judaism upon the newly- formed community of Galatian Christians. In response to what he had been told of the matter, he penned the following (3:21-29) … the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under the schoolmaster… For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ… And if ye be Christ’s then are ye Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise. The apostle concluded his epistle with these words: And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them and mercy and upon the Israel of God.

Matthew Henry once noted the apostle was pronouncing a blessing upon both Gentile and Jew who adhered to the doctrine of the gospel and were thus spiritual heirs of Abraham. It ought to be clearly understood from our reading of Scripture that God has created through Jesus Christ only one path to salvation. We should disabuse ourselves of the notion that there are, as the New Agers claim, many paths to God. Do not be tricked into believing that line of hokum for it was just such a warning which St. Paul sent to the Galatians. The requirements of the law have been fulfilled by the one Rabbi, Master and Saviour who came to free us from this body of sin and death.

Nevertheless, Satan has created other masters that are meant to lure us from the straight and narrow path of our Christian walk. It should be understood at the outset that, in the time of this mortal life, you can expect to be troubled by the devil and his minions. We are daily faced with his inventive and insidious lures, particularly those twin menaces of doubt and worry. The devil uses these to elevate our troubles and accentuate our fears. If the devil can get us to think that our problems are too big for God, then such will impair our communion with the Godhead and will keep us from realizing our true calling in his service. Examine the words of our Lord in our gospel lesson when he said, Take no thought of your life…for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you… Doubt by its very nature causes us to hold our hands up and keep God at a distance. We look at what his word says and then the devil provides us with editorial comments such as, “Oh, that is not what it really means;” or, “Do you really believe that?” or, “That is impossible;” or , “God does not care about you.”

Worry masters us, particularly if we hold the notion of our sovereign ability as captains of our lives. The devil encourages us to adopt this attitude so he can load us down with the cares and concerns of this life, and foolishly we assume them in the mistaken belief that we are in control. If you are a regenerate person, you should know that God is sovereign over all aspects of your life. If he is not, and you think that you have control, you will have worries “to beat the band” as the old folks would say.

Most of us were been brought up to be independent, career-oriented persons. We were taught to be diligent in our particular occupations in order provide for ourselves and our families. That is the natural and normative understanding of maturity. But many have not been taught to understand God is the sovereign ruler of the whole of Creation. And if he is LORD over all things, that includes our lives as well. There is an old joke about a man who was busy trying to find a parking place in a large city. He had driven around the block a number of times and then in his frustration, he called out to God to help him. Just then, a parking spot opened up right in front of the place he wanted to enter. He then lifted his eyes up to heaven and said, “Thanks, LORD, but I already found one myself.” Clearly, that man had called on God for help, but when it came, he would not give God the credit. He must not have thought that God was really listening to him, or that he had just gotten a lucky break as it were; but it certainly was not of God. Or, have you ever done something good for another and he or she took credit for it themselves? The devil enjoys seeing human beings elevating their own efforts over that of God.

Our challenge as born-again believers is to reject the notion that we are sovereign and live in accordance with God’s word and commandment. In Christ Jesus we have died to this world and are reborn as new people. Our bodies are therefore vessels of the Holy Spirit. We understand that we have been bought with a price and that we no longer belong to ourselves. Consider the Lord’s Prayer which many often recite without much thought: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven… Think on that last phrase for it is pregnant with the Christian ethos. We do not say our will be done but his will. And, we do not say our kingdom come but his kingdom that we seek. If we are not living for him and him alone then we have not been born again of the Holy Ghost. If he is Lord, he is Lord over all our life and not just an hour or so on Sunday or on Wednesday evening.

Those who would not have the Godhead as their sovereign LORD and Master will have Satan as their default ruler. There are no shades of gray in God’s way of thinking. Either you are saved, or you are not. If you are saved, God is your LORD and Master. The New Age, All-Inclusive, Laodicean versions of the Christian faith have been fabricated by our adversary for the purpose of leading humanity away from the truth of God’s word written. Do not become a casualty in this great spiritual war which is raging all around us. Put your faith in God and in his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, who died on that rude cross so that all who believe on him might live with him forever. Lean on his breast as the beloved apostle John did at the Last Supper and was comforted beyond measure. Rely on his word and commandment as opposed to relying on your own understanding. And trust in him, as the 23rd Psalm so states, to lead you through the valley of the shadow of death into green pastures and by the still waters. . God will do those things for us, and so much more, if we will follow his word written and be born again by means of the Holy Ghost in full acceptance of Jesus Christ as the only way, truth and life. Anything less will avail us nothing of God’s blessings nor of his kingdom.

Let us pray,

F

ather, make of us a people who, being born again of the Holy Ghost, will

seek after thee and accept thy sovereign will over all aspects of our lives; for this we ask in the name of our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.
