Sunday Report

Today we celebrated the Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

To Mary Willis Shelburne: On how to rehearse for death and how to diminish fear.

17 June 1963

Pain is terrible, but surely you need not have fear as well? Can you not see death as the friend and deliverer? It means stripping off that body which is tormenting you: like taking off a hair- shirt or getting out of a dungeon. What is there to be afraid of? You have long attempted (and none of us does more) a Christian life. Your sins are confessed and absolved. Has this world been so kind to you that you should leave it with regret? There are better things ahead than any we leave behind.

Remember, though we struggle against things because we are afraid of them, it is often the other way round—we get afraid be- cause we struggle. Are you struggling, resisting? Don’t you think Our Lord says to you ‘Peace, child, peace. Relax. Let go. Underneath are the everlasting arms. Let go, I will catch you. Do you trust me so little?

Of course, this may not be the end. Then make it a good rehearsal.

Yours (and like you a tired traveller near the journey’s end) Jack

There are many called by Christ’s name who are enemies to Christ’s cross and the design and intention of it. Their walk is a surer evidence of what they are than their profession. By their fruits you shall know them.

The meanest room where a few penitent believers assemble in the name of Jesus is a consecrated and most holy place in the sight of God. They that worship God in spirit and truth never draw near to him in vain. Often they go home from such meetings warmed, cheered, stablished, strengthened, comforted, and refreshed. And what is the secret of their feelings? They have had with them the great Master of assemblies even Christ himself.

Death is… a return from exile, a going home to the many mansions where the loved ones already dwell. Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 214-215, with the Collect first:

L

ORD, we beseech thee, grant thy people grace to withstand the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil; and with pure hearts and minds to follow thee, the only God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle for today came from Saint Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians beginning at the Fourth Verse of the First Chapter.   Paul tells the people of Corinth he thanks God they have been the beneficiaries of His Grace, that through Jesus they might have salvation, that through Jesus their sins would in the end be forgiven.  He also pointed out that if they would follow Christ in both their words and deeds, as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in them, through their actions, they would be “In every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge…”  For by acting on Christ’s words, we not only gain entry in to heaven, but are far more likely to prosper here on earth.  This prosperity is not the mega wealth sometimes associated with “prospering”, but rather the surplus of resources over our worldly desires and the true happiness that comes from loving and helping others.

I

 thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; that in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: so that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Today’s Holy Gospel came from the Twenty-Second Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew beginning at the Thirty-Fourth Verse.  Pharisees who had heard how Jesus confounded the Sadducees, feeling they were superior to the Sadducees, came together to confound Him.  An expert in the law, of which Pharisees were very fond, asked Him a question, trying to trick Him, “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?”  Jesus answered, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Thus, He provided the Summary of the Law we hear every Sunday.  The Pharisees made their earthly living by providing guidance on how to get around the 613 Mosaic Laws with as little inconvenience as possible.  They were astounded when Jesus boiled the intent of those laws down to two sentences.  They were much more comfortable getting around laws than complying with ones that might inconvenience them.

Apparently tiring of the game with the Pharisees and wishing to confound them instead, Jesus asked them, saying, “What think ye of Christ? Whose son is He?” They say unto him, “The son of David.”  For the scripture is clear that He should be of the House of David.  As God, Jesus has been from the beginning, so he queried them, “How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?”  Not grasping the concept that God was, is and always will be, they could not answer and “from that day forth” no one would “ask him any more questions.”

W

hen the Pharisees had heard that Jesus had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.  Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David. He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

hen the Pharisees had heard that Jesus had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.(Matt 22:34-46)

The Pharisees did not argue the merits of Christ’s victory in the exchange with the Sadducees for they cared not for the righteousness of His cause, only they sought a means by which they might destroy Him. Though they may have neglected assembling for the purpose of worship, they certainly gathered themselves together for the sake of conspiracy against the God whom they presumed to serve. They, and their representatives, asked what they hoped would be a hard question for Christ, but when He answered with Scriptural Truth, Jesus asked them a question which baffled them and they were vanquished from the field of debate by One they loathed and considered a mere carpenter. Their view was the greatest miscalculation of their lives.

But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. They gathered, not as eagles which never congregate in groups but soar individually, but as buzzards which instinctively gather where they believe death will provide a meal.

Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying. The lawyer is not so in the sense of one who litigates civil or criminal suits, but a teacher of the Law of Moses. This lawyer is even more malicious than those who chase ambulances on our modern scene. He proposes a question which is not out of curiosity to know the truth but out of malicious intent to tempt and entangle Christ in His words. Master, which is the great commandment in the law? The answer to this inquiry is not a single, canned answer. The Law of Moses is based upon obedience and constraint, but the Commandments – all of them – of God are rooted in love. Even those indiscretions which violate the law may be covered by a sufficiency of love in the heart. ……love covereth all sins. (Pro 10:12b)Men love laws and rules, but God loves the things of the heart.

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There are those of the heretical antinomian party who advance these two commandments as proof that the Ten Commandments of God are ancillary to obedience to God in this first great Commandment, but they are not. The Ten Commandments facilitate obedience to these two great Commandments repeated by Christ. Christ does not institute a new Commandment here, but re-emphasizes those already given: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. (Deut 6:5) The second part of the great Commandment is also recorded in Old Testament law: Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. (Lev 19:18) Here we have the purpose and intent of the Law – love! The Law was written on tables of stone at Sinai, but in the fullness of time, God has written them in the hearts of His people. But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. (Jer 31:33) The Law was never intended as a burden, but as a blessing to us. We have made the constraints of the Law of God a burden. We have made perfect obedience a precondition to salvation itself, and we have erred gravely thereby. There is no sin that is beyond the reach of God to forgive. It is by grace whereby we are saved, and never by the works of the Law! For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Eph 2:8-10) It was through the reading of this passage, and many others that opened the eyes of the great Reformer, Martin Luther, to the blessed truths of the Gospel and to the errors of Rome.

In the Gospel of Saint Luke, we learn more about this exchange: And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. (Mark 12:32-34)

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them. Christ employs an excellent military rule here: while the targets are in one field, and in close formation, economy of fire will save much time and expense. While He has these culprits together in one space, He will return the favor of their question. What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? The whole effort of the Pharisees has been to expose Christ in the eyes of the people as someone less than whom He claims to be. So He will return the fire and see if they can stand the heat. This question is one which they did not expect, and one which they would prefer not to answer. In attempting to cause Christ to answer wrongly, and having been disappointed in the effort, they now face an embarrassment which will reveal their own dishonest and treacherous hearts before the people. They wanted to pick the field of battle, but Christ has outmaneuvered them and now brings the battle to their own front door! They say unto him, The Son of David. Always preferring law over grace and mercy, these scoundrels are consistent in answering, even rightly, according to the law, for Christ is truly considered under the law of generations to have been the Son of David. No Jew today can trace his genealogical record back more than three or four generations, but at Christ’s coming, God used even the secular power to reveal the generations of Christ through the line of David on both the royal and the priestly side. This is the ‘legal’ record of Christ’s descent, but the descent of Christ is through no earthly father, but of God the Father.

He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. (Psalm 110:1) This prophetic utterance of David was issued through the inspiration of God. It cannot be understood by a heart that is darkened by hate and devoid of inspiration. These Pharisees, therefore, could not discern either a spiritual, or a politically acceptable, answer to this question.

And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions. So Christ, with the simple weapon of Truth, has vanquished His four different sets of enemies in one sitting whose weapons are intrigue, deceit, and treachery – the Pharisees, the Herodians, the Sadducees, and the Scribes. The world hates innocence and truth because it is a conflict and a challenge to all that the world adores. But truth ALWAYS wins out in the long run. No one remembers the Roman pontiff who disputed with Luther, but all remember Luther. No one remembers the Archbishop who sent Cranmer and others to the stake, but all remember Cranmer, Latimer, and Ridley. We may not recall the names of the men who sat on the Sanhedrin in condemnation of Christ, but we remember Christ and His Apostles. True silver is silver all the way through. If silver-plated, the spoon will wear through in time to expose the cheaper metal beneath, but a sterling spoon will always prove to be silver. Are you a sterling Christian, or do you wear the plating and covering of a Christian and are an imposter underneath?

Sermon Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Todays sermon tied the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and talked, as is oft the case, of the need for action, not simply diction.

Consider the words of the Collect, “…grant thy people grace to withstand the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil; and with pure hearts and minds to follow thee, the only God …”

When you hear the word GRACE, what do you think of?

  • Help;

  • Heavenly dispensation;

  • A gift freely granted;

  • The free and unmerited favor of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings.

    The word can be any of these, it comes from Middle English: via Old French from Latin gratia, from gratus ‘pleasing, thankful’ and is related to grateful.

    In this case we are asking God’s help, for which He charges nothing, except our faith and loyalty to Him, to withstand the temptations of this world.  We ask for help to withstand what?  Actually, what we are looking for is help to not follow our own devices and desires.  We are asking for help to withstand temptations that not only come from external sources, but also from internal sources, namely our hearts and minds. This seems like an odd request, until one considers the fact that our own devices and desires are the root of all of our troubles. We are naturally inclined to the sinful things which separate us from Our Lord. We are simply requesting help in combating the evil desires of our heart that would separate us for all eternity if they were left unchecked. We are simply asking for help to make His Will our will.  To help us to do what will make us happy and not just what we think fun, but to be permanently happy, which boils down to following His Word. For we know that we ourselves will not do what His Will is on our own volition, but rather we must ask that God plant the seed of His Will on our hearts so that we will do it.

    Paradoxically, we are asking for help to do not what we want, but what is best for us. There is a difference between what we want, and what is best for us, as there is a difference between the words want and need. What we want and what is best for us are not necessarily interchangeable. We often confuse wanting something with needing something, when that something we want is not something we truly need and or is good for us.  We are asking God’s Help to make us want to do what He wants us to do, so that not only will we have “fun”, but be happy!  We are also asking His help to discern what is good and needed for us, to help us clarify the difference between things that are needed and those we want, and to see what is bad and not helpful.

    We are in short asking for His guidance to guide us to the path of being truly happy and not just having a fun time.  For, being happy is far more important and helps our spiritual lives more than the temporary state of fun. Fun will only last a few moments, happiness will last forever. There is a distinct difference between the two states of being. Fun is short lived while happiness can carry on through periods of time be it days, months or years.  On the surface, it does not really seem all that reasonable, but here we are imperfect creatures with free will! The free will sometimes, or rather most of the time, seems more like a curse than a blessing, at least to me.

    Using it properly to follow God’s will is what free will was intended by God to lead us to. He intended for us to follow Him willingly without any coercion whatsoever. He wants each and every one of us to come to His throne willingly and with all of our heart souls and mind for Him. He will give us the tool of the Holy Spirit, His guidance to withstand all the trials and temptations this world throws our way. We have to have confidence in Him and be able and willing to listen to that guidance to help us through these periods of temptation and difficulty in our lives.

    So, when Paul writes the people of Corinth, it is not just them, but us for whom he thanks God we have been the beneficiaries of His Grace, that through Jesus we might have salvation, that through Jesus our sins would in the end be forgiven.  We are not made perfect by Jesus.  That is a common misconception among non-Christians.  It would be convenient if we were made perfect.  This is an issue which sorely needs addressing in today’s church, to combat the misperceptions of the non-Christians. The common complaint most non-Christians have of Christians is that we have a holier than thou attitude. There may be some indeed that have this attitude.

    People who have the misconception that Christians are made perfect are shocked when Christians act less than perfectly, so they just presume the faith is false. But this is not so. They fail to realize Christians are no more perfect than non-believers, as we are all human and all are sinful creatures. They fail to consider although we are not perfect, our faith is in the One who is perfect and we seek guidance from Him. We may fail from time to time, but as long as we keep returning to Him, it will be all right. They fail to realize we are just trying to be perfect the best we can, but we won’t be perfect, but that does not mean we can’t give up. They are blinded by not having the Holy Ghost’s guidance in their heart.

    The world confuses our righteous judgment of the world’s behavior with a holier than thou attitude. But they do not see we realize we are not perfect, but we are striving for perfection.  And there would be no point behind Christianity if that we had been made perfect. Would we have to have a “New Testament” if we were molded into cookie cutter perfection? If this was so, then there would be no need for the letters of Saints Paul, James, Peter and John to the early church, for they as us, would have no need of them. If we were made perfect, then there would be no strife in the word today I believe; thus no reason to even have any of the parables that Jesus gave.  This is simply not so! While we are accounted as perfect before God in the final judgment, we are not perfect at all.  If anything, we are more conscious of our imperfection.

    As a side point, none of us is perfect, none of us is better than others; however, some of us are clearly worse than others. We certainly know more than those who do not believe that we are fallen far short of the goal that He expects from us, being in our fallen state, and we know how far we have to go to as get close to perfection as we possibly can.  We need the help of the Almighty to travel on this path!

    Which takes us to Paul’s next point; if we follow Christ in both out words and deeds, as the testimony of Christ is confirmed in them, through our actions, we will be “In every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge…” For by acting on Christ’s words, we not only gain eternal salvation, but are far more likely to prosper here on earth.  This prosperity is not the mega wealth sometimes associated with “prospering”, but rather the surplus of resources over our worldly desires and the true happiness that comes from loving and helping others.  It will make us far more happy than say for instance people like Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, etc, who have far more money than even they know what to do with, and money cannot provide true happiness. Only God and Jesus can step in and fill that role, if we let him into our hearts.

    But, not everyone is content to take Jesus at His Word.  After the Sadducees lost their round with Jesus, the Pharisees, feeling they were superior to the Sadducees, came together to trip Him up. However, as we know ourselves, one cannot trick God, and if you try, you will come out looking the fool. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Thus, He provided the Summary of the Law we hear every Holy Communion.

    The Pharisees made their earthly living by providing guidance on how to get around the 613 Mosaic Laws with as little inconvenience as possible.  They were astounded when Jesus boiled the intent of those laws down to two sentences.  They were much more comfortable getting around laws than complying with ones which might inconvenience them. They could be closely compared to lawyers today as a matter of fact, in the striking amount of dishonesty that is in their profession (no offense to the good lawyers!).

    Boiling down the intent of the laws into those two sentences, gave the Pharisees a hard fast law that for once, they could not find a loophole in. There is no way to get around the basic intent of the Summary of the Law, Love God, and love your neighbor as yourself. The Pharisees would much rather follow the complicated system of the 613 laws than the simple, basic Summary of the Law. They could or would not see that it was far better to follow the Summary of the Law than try to get around all 613 laws.

If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?”  Not grasping the concept that God was, is and always will be, they could not answer and “from that day forth” no one would “ask him any more questions.” Like I mentioned earlier, the result of their attempt to trick the Son of God made them look like absolute fools.

    There have always been and always will be people who want to pick nits with the intent of avoiding doing what should be done, thus making it seems acceptable to do what they want to do.  You can see people every day who fill the shoes of the Pharisees, insisting on complying with arcane and useless rules and regulations while studiously avoiding doing what God so clearly asks, that is to be a Christian and do as Christ asks us to do.  People are always going to avoid doing what God wants us to do, that is in our nature. You can see this as the government attempts to replace the Rule of God with the rule of man. When a group of men believe that they have the right to control other humans with the rule of man and disregard the rule of God, you know that a society is in trouble. Ask Sodom, Gomorrah, Rome, Nazi Germany, and Imperial Japan how that worked out for them in the end. No country has ever fared well when it replaces God with the rule of Man. We are to be Christians, not “good”, to do what God asks, not Go with the Flow!  When you think about being a Christian, think a bit about these quotes from GK Chesterton:

  • Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried.

  • The word good has many meanings. For example, if a man were to shoot his grandmother at a range of five hundred yards, I should call him a good shot, but not necessarily a good man.

  • The Bible tells us to love our neighbors, and also to love our enemies; probably because generally they are the same people.

  • Tolerance is the virtue of the man without convictions.

  • A dead thing can go with the stream, but only a living thing can go against it.

 G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936)

We are called to a new and different life, we ask the Lord, in His Grace, to lead us and follow us, to keep us always.  Our goal is to do the Lord’s will, not to avoid 613 laws or to replace Him altogether.  To do what is right, no matter how hard that may be and be humble. This is the summary of what the Christian life should be all about.

Action, not diction, is what counts.  It is by your actions you are known.

The Gospel according to Saint John

7:37-51

And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.  38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? 39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.  41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messiah, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.  42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jonah: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.  43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.  44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.  45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.  46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.  47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.  50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

Do you take the time to stop and look around you?  Not only in the physical, but also in the spiritual sense, do you stop and look?   David, in this sixty-third psalm, stops and takes notice; he thinks back to times of quiet, in the night watch, when he was spiritually thirsty, when he longed for God in dry and thirsty lands: then he sought God.  He saw the works, power, and glory of God, he remembered the help when others sought to harm him, even to the point of destroying his soul, but he knew he’d rejoice in God, in spite of all the chaos that surrounded him.  Think about that, a shepherd/king, one who came from the fields filled with sheep, to the splendor of a palace made by the hands of man, and yet he knew it was all about who was his God.

Now compare, if you would, this certainty David had about his God, his understanding built upon what he saw and experienced throughout his life with the encounter by a group of hard working tradesmen with Jesus the Son of God, as recorded in John’s gospel.  Note the shift in observational skills. This shift is not so much about perspective, more of anticipation.  David knew of his God, he witnessed the works and glory of his God, the simple fishermen were anticipating the coming One, he who was promised arrival would bring redemption to Israel.  They didn’t know it yet, but they would be involved in the full covenant promised to Father Abraham, the redemption of the world too.  “…through you all nations will be blessed…”.   A paraphrase of the promise and covenant God had with Abraham that his descendants would be the means of salvation to the whole world.

This salvation, this redemption, is what Andrew, Peter, Nathaniel, John, Philip, and later the full thirteen would begin to see unfold.  At first they only understood Jesus as the national Messiah; the Christ, the ONE whom Moses and the prophets did write, it would be later they understood him as the Redeemer of all mankind.  “…he who was sent to save that which was lost…”.

Now comes a serious question: “What do you see?”   Each one of these men followed a series of events, they heard the message of John the baptizer in the wilderness, they knew what they had heard in synagogue about the coming One, now they must have asked each other that question.  What do you see?   John preached repentance, he baptized those who repented, he preached that One was coming, soon, of whose sandals he was not worthy of untying, now He was here.

Would we have been so astute to know this Jesus, the son of Joseph (as they understood that relationship), was the promised Messiah?  Would we have put two and two together to understand that this Jesus was the One written about in Moses books and spoken about by the prophets?

Would have been able to discern who Jesus was, do we still have it?

Yes, if you listen to the still quiet voice of the Holy Spirit, he calls you to Jesus, he draws you to your Savior, you must listen.

Now we will read of the many aspects of Jesus three and a half year ministry, as recorded by those first who were called that fateful day some two thousand years ago. We have the full record of all those events, full in the sense of what is necessary to fill out the details of Jesus ministry, and yet even with this many still do not believe.

Those simple men believed based on what they heard and saw, they believed what they had been told time and time in their synagogue meetings; what is the excuse of modern man?

Some social scientists, both secular and of the faith community, believe the problem is overload. We have too much information, too much stimulation of the eye, ear, mind and such, thus causing a short circuiting of our processes.  We either can’t or won’t filter out the “chaff” to see what the real message is as presented to us by the Word and the Creation. {Romans 1,2, 3}

What is the solution to this problem?   Be still and know that I am God[1].  We must take the time to stop and see what is there before us, we must stop being busy to be busy, and possible, most likely, saving our souls.

Look around you beloved, see what God has done[2].   Take the time to be still and know that he is God.  That the time to spend some daily feeding upon his Word, the Bible.   Pray that the Holy Spirit give you spiritual sight in what you are reading.  Do you eat at least once or twice a day?  Do you drink water to hydrate yourself a couple of times a day?  Then you should at least feed upon the Word once a day, whether it be in the quiet of the morning or the still of the evening, you need to do it.   It is then that you will be able to see who Jesus is, you will be able to answer the question; ‘what do you see?’

Beloved, go and do this simple thing, you are otherwise starving yourself by not doing so.

Let us pray:

O

 GRACIOUS Father, we humbly beseech thee for thy holy Catholic Church; that thou wouldst be pleased to fill it with all truth, in all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in anything it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, establish it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of him who died and rose again, and ever liveth to make intercession for us, Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord. Amen.

O

 LORD Jesus Christ, who saidst unto thine Apostles, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; Regard not our sins, but the faith of thy Church; and grant to it that peace and unity which is according to thy will, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

A

LMIGHTY God, the fountain of all wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask, and our ignorance in asking; We beseech thee to have compassion upon our infirmities; and those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, vouchsafe to give us, for the worthiness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity

Exodus 14:5-14

A

nd it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?  6 And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him:  7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.  8 And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high hand.  9 But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon.  10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the Lord.  11 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?  12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.  13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.  14 The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

In Exodus we learn Pharaoh was inflamed by a spirit of violence to pursue the people of God who had left the precincts of Egypt on their journey to the promised land of Canaan. One might wonder why, after all the devastation which God had wrought in his kingdom, Pharaoh would seek to do with his army what he could not do with his own gods. The force he faced was supernatural not natural. Pharaoh’s mighty strike force was more than a match for any other army of that time, but against the LORD of Hosts, it stood no chance.

As for the Israelites, one might assume after witnessing the awesome display of God’s sovereign might against the land of Egypt, they would have possessed a more abiding faith in him. They, of course, did not. They were murmurers from the beginning: always complaining at every turn and never giving God a chance to take action on their behalf. The bottom line was that they did not trust the LORD their God, and they were quick to turn against both him and his servant Moses. God had led the Israelites to the shores of the Red Sea, but with no boats to aid their crossing and with the added element of Pharaoh’s army bearing down upon them, they howled, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore has thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us … than that we should die in the wilderness.

This should have been a time of trustful prayer to the LORD. Instead we are presented with a despicable display of unfaithfulness and unbelief. How quickly they had forgotten what they had witnessed since the return of Moses from Sinai to lead them out of bondage. Let’s see, there were the ten plagues which devastated the land of Egypt and not one of them affected the Israelites. Were they blind to those things which had resulted in their deliverance: the plagues of frogs, boils, lice, hail mingled with fire (in a country that rarely ever saw rain), darkness that could be felt, the river turned to blood, and the death of the first born? Then there was the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night.  Were these so easily forgotten?

It would seem on the shores of the Red Sea, all the aforementioned signs and wonders should have been enough to convince even the most callous skeptic among the people that their God was the only God, but alas they were not. They were ungrateful to God for their deliverance from bondage, and they demonstrated their lack of thankfulness via their murmurings and their fearmongering. And so their ingratitude, along with their stiff-necked attitude and their faithlessness became the defining characteristics of the children of Israel throughout their history.

But they have not been alone in their lack of faith as noted in the Scriptures. Even the disciples of our Lord prior to his resurrection suffered a season of doubt and denial. St. Thomas would not believe the resurrection accounts of his fellows and has been dubbed through the millennia as “Doubting Thomas.” Even noble and stalwart St. Peter waffled on several occasions, even denying for a moment that he knew the Lord.

Now there is a difference between the disciples and the children of Israel in Moses’ time. After witnessing the risen Lord, the disciples went forth in faith believing on him unto death; while the children of Israel — who had experienced a continual stream of events where God acted on their behalf — could not muster enough faith and trust in him for their deliverance from Pharaoh; or the giants in the land of Canaan; or in the commandment of God to secure all the land of Canaan during the time of Joshua. And further, in their desire to be like every other kingdom around them, they rejected God’s rule over them as their king in their quest to have an earthly one. They also rejected the prophets of God who had been sent to communicate his plan and purpose for them. And they conveniently set aside in their minds those miracles which God had wrought in their sight such as their deliverance from the Assyrian king Sennacherib, and the works of the prophets beforehand such as Elijah. Finally, they refused to recognize the first coming of the Messiah Prince who came to deliver them from their sins.

Witness the words of Saint Stephen in Acts 7:51-53 wherein he leveled this charge: Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. Needless to say, St. Stephen’s comments marked him for death at their hands as well.

Sadly, many at this present are not immune from the temptation to look at the pressures and problems that the Devil sends our way as being too hard for God, or are at a minimum, of no real interest to him. Let me say this in all candor, THERE IS NOTHING TOO HARD FOR GOD!!! Write that down and keep it ever in your mind. If you need justification for it then turn to the very first chapter of Genesis and read the very first verse; and afterward, tell me that anything in this created universe is too hard for God.

He made it. He designed it. He spoke it into existence. And we, who are made in his image and have a conscious awareness of his presence as regenerated people, ought to recognize the truth of God for he has given such to us in his word written.

Therefore, the birth of Isaac to a woman well passed her child-bearing years; the protection of Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, who had been cast into the fiery furnace of King Nebuchadnezzar for refusing to worship his golden statue; the empowering of Elijah to raise the widow of Zarephath’s son from the dead, the various acts of the apostles wherein they raised the dead, healed the sick and were brought through various trials which in the ordinary course of things would have resulted in their own deaths; are all classed as miracles which defy our understanding because they are supernatural.

Paul reminds us in his first epistle to the Corinthians (2:1-16), he came not preaching human wisdom, but that of God. He came not knowing anything but, Jesus Christ, and him crucified. He was given to write those words so that the faith of the believers in Corinth — as well as ours— should rest on nothing but the power of God. As he noted further, But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. The unregenerate cannot know the things of God by their own will and understanding. It is impossible for them without the coming of the Holy Ghost, to empower and enliven them, to see the truth in God’s word written. The apostle then finished the chapter with these words: But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

All those men and women who have been mentioned in scripture as being of the true faith, possessed a God-consciousness, which for us, as regenerated beings, refers to the mind of Christ. The Christ-centered mind seeks to honor the will of God by keeping his word and commandments. We trust him implicitly and we believe that he will fulfil the promises he made to the apostles and saints of old.

So when we read the miraculous accounts as recorded within the pages of Scripture such as the crossing of the Red Sea, we find that Moses’ words still ring true because they offer us an eternal encouragement to trust in God’s power as opposed to what those who possess so-to-speak rational minds will tell us is quite frankly impossible. And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD. We should do so as well.

Let us pray,

F

ather, make of us a people who are bold in our faith and who trust in thy word; and help us daily to be obedient to thy will; to possess a heart to live as we proclaim; and to watch for the glorious appearing of thy dear Son, Jesus Christ; for these things we ask in his most precious name. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.
