Today we celebrated the Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

The earliest visible churches have in many cases decayed and perished. Where is the church at Ephesus and the church of Antioch? Where is the church of Alexandria and the church of Constantinople? …They departed from the Word of God. They were proud of their bishops, and synods, and ceremonies, and learning, and antiquity. They did not glory in the true cross of Christ. They did not hold fast the gospel. They did not give the Lord Jesus his rightful office, or faith its rightful place. They are now among the things that have been. Their candlestick has been taken away. But all this time the true church has lived on… Its persecutors have died and gone… but the Word of God has lived and grown, and multiplied…it is an anvil which has broken many a hammer in times past, and perhaps will break many more before the end.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 215-217, with the Collect first:

The Collect.

O

 GOD, forasmuch as without thee we are not able to please thee; Mercifully grant that thy Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle for today came from Saint Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, the Fourth Chapter, beginning at the Seventeenth Verse.  Typical of Paul, he uses a spiral argument with a seemingly confusing structure to further instruct the people on how to become the New Man.  Our nature is not good, but rather straying from good.  We have to work at good, by ourselves good is not attainable, but through Christ, we can attain good.  Paul asks us to lie no more, particularly to ourselves, but rather to “speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.”  If we are angry, we must “let not the sun go down upon our wrath.”  We should not live off others, but rather, “labour, working with our hands the thing which is good, that we may have to give to him that needeth.”  Speak good, speak that others might learn.  Put away ill feeling, give in to God and be “kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”  God wants us to be happy, to be good and to enjoy life.  If you find this no other place, listen to Paul’s words.

T

HIS I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ; if so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: that ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: and be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Today’s Holy Gospel came from the Fourth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew beginning at the First Verse.  Jesus came upon “a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus, seeing their faith, said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.”  Present were scribes of the temple.  They thought to themselves., “This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house.  Sometimes we are tempted to view the troubles of this world as the only issues we have to confront.  Surely the trouble we have here pales to that we have if we make the wrong choices here and end up in the pit.  Many can heal the palsy; only through Jesus can our sins be forgiven.  In this case, the sins were forgiven and the problems of this earth resolved.  The power of Jesus was again made manifest.

J

esus entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus, seeing their faith, said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house. But when the multitudes saw it, they marveled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.

The Gospel

Matt 9:1-8

1 And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. 2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. 3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. 4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. 7 And he arose, and departed to his house. 8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.

            There may appear a seeming impasse for imperfect children of God in this prayer, but it is only apparent and not real. How can those imperfect professors of Christ please God in their imperfections when God cannot look upon the slightest sin and wickedness, especially in view of this fact: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) If we had continued reading in Romans 3, we would have read that it is righteousness by Faith in Jesus Christ by which we are all justified. God the Father views us in light of the imputed righteousness of His Son, Jesus Christ! It is our faith, dictated by God’s elective grace, that brings us into that covering of Grace for all our sins.

            O GOD, forasmuch as without thee we are not able to please thee So, apart from Christ, there can be no salvation. Without Christ, there is no reconciliation of the sinner to the terms of justification and salvation to God. We must have that nature and mind that was in Christ imparted to our own natures and minds. Even the will to do good cannot exist in a heart that does not belong to God. An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin. (Proverbs 21:4) Though our pride and vanity are our ancient stumbling blocks to keep us from righteousness, even the small things of life that seem good are not so with God. Now, I am sure you will agree, the plowing of a field seems to be commendable labor. It certainly is so in the eyes of men, but to God, even that seeming good thing is sin when performed by those who are not of the household of God and who harbor wickedness in their hearts.

            Doubt not! All who are depending upon their own righteousness are wicked. Every heart born into the world needs a purifying and cleansing purge. That purge is Christ and His shed blood! So the Collect opens with a profound truth upon which the petition that follows in good order is contingent – we are not good without the goodness of God. Our good works are not our own, but His who died for us and MADE us into the sons and daughters of God.

            Mercifully grant that thy Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts Even our rudimentary petitions must start, not with our own worth, but MERCY – and that mercy is of God to us. The very services that we perform out of love to God and man are not ours, but result from that MERCY of God through the efficacious workings of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. Why is this so? Because even that love we demonstrate to others  is borrowed and not our own – it comes from God in His Mercy. Remember those Tables of Law written in Stone? Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; (2 Corinthians 3:3-5) This is, indeed, good news to the saved. We are not perfect in our ways, and we KNOW it! But God has imputed a love of righteousness in our hearts that causes us to obey His Law of Love. We know that our righteousness falls far short of God’s standard, but our love of God, and His Son Jesus, will bring us to obedience in the things of the law. Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins. (Proverbs 10:12) How many sins will love cover? All sins!

            Now you may smugly satisfy your ego that you have such an abundance of love that your sins are all covered, right? Wrong, it is not your own love that covers all of your sins, but the Love of Christ that has covered all sins – and He broadcasts that Love into the hearts of those who know Him as Lord and Savior. Does this truth make the Law of none effect? Not at all, but it makes it a greater joy to please and obey God out of our gift of Love than from the uncompromising restraint of Law written on Tables of Stone.

            We see in the latter part of the petition of this Collect an acknowledgment that our obedience and goodness are not native to the human heart, but directed by the Holy Spirit that rules in every heart born of God.

            Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Were our petitions of imputed righteousness based on any name other than that of the One who paid our sin-debt, our prayer would fall on the bleak ground of our own helplessness. It was Christ who bought us, and it is in Christ’s name by which we ask the blessing. Are you good? “There is none good but God!”

            The Gospel for the day echoes the grace represented in our Sunday Collects. The man afflicted with the palsy was unable to come to Christ just as many in the dark and far-flung lands of wilderness countries. They must be brought by other caring souls to Him. Bringing others to Christ is not a private matter, but a function of the mission of the Church. Carrying a litter, as these men of today’s  Gospel did, bearing a disabled friend, requires a coordinated effort. All who carry a litter must bear the equal weight of the four corners of the litter. If one relaxes his grip, the victim falls to the ground. Like so with the Church and her missions. One must prepare and train the missionary, another must share the burden of costs, and the other must do the travel. Many hands are involved in the delivery of the Gospel to those who sit in darkness on foreign shores.

            Another cardinal point of today’s Gospel is the fact Jesus knows the innermost thoughts of our souls – sometimes even before WE know them. He has the authority to forgive sins, and He has power to heal the bodies that He has made for us. And when He commands any to arise, that person cannot resist that irresistible grace of His command and Voice. If you are a disciple of Christ, and Andrew must have brought you to Him at some point. Perhaps it was your parents, a friend, or a caring stranger. As it is written:

13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! (Romans 10:13-15)

How?

Sermon Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Todays sermon tied the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and talked, as is oft the case, of the need for action, not simply diction.

Consider the words of the Collect, “…without thee we are not able to please thee; Mercifully grant that thy Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts …”

The collect continues on the theme from last week, that without God’s mighty help through the Holy Spirit, we are not able to understand what we need to do to be one with God, to follow His Will; we need Him, through the Holy Ghost, to direct us in our endeavors, beliefs and understanding.

This theme is continued and amplified in the Epistle, where Paul writes to the Ephesians, Chapter 4, Verse 17. Yet henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened and alienated from the life of the God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.

Paul basically is saying we should not do as the world does and look into ourselves for guidance for our spiritual lives. If you look into your inner self, you will find blood, guts and bodily fluids.  Looking there for guidance is a bad idea; we would find this out when we die and wake up from our death to find we are not only physically dead but have died a spiritual death, a permanent separation from God, as we are on the other side of that “fixed gulf.” There is a reason that Jesus illustrated this concept of the parable of the rich man and Lazarus showing without God’s help and guidance, we will be separated from Him for all eternity. Make no mistake, that fixed gulf is very real. There is a way to avoid this fixed gulf, and that is to accept His spiritual help and guidance and to let the Holy Ghost into our lives.

To do that, we must openly accept Him into our hearts and let Him guide our thoughts and actions. This begins by allowing His guidance to enter into our actions and to make His Way our way, so that we are in alignment with what He wants us to do here on Earth. Saint Paul tells us we must begin to live our lives anew, to leave off the old sinful ways and thoughts of our old lives, to reboot as it were, and to start afresh by being honest, not prone to anger, work hard, and think, speak and act kindness and to forgive as you would have God forgive you.  The saying of Do unto others as you would have them do unto you comes in mind here. We must work to clean our slate, and the Holy Ghost can help with that, then we can begin to minister effectively to others.

In short, we are to act on His Instructions and our lives will change as the natural result of doing what we are supposed to be doing.  Simply saying you believe changes nothing.  Change your actions and your heart must in the end follow, with the help of the Holy Ghost.  Your heart will be renewed through the entrance of the Holy Ghost.  This will show up a little later on, but it is an important message which bears repeating. It is the same with many changes you will need to make in your life, you have to make them, not just say you are going to make them. In other words, to perform the action and not just say you are going to. Many people never get past the stage of saying they will perform the action, but we need to go farther than that and actually do the action. To be a better person, to grow in the Spirit, you have to perform actions that are consistent and that the Holy Spirit guides you to do.

To be successful, Paul says we need to fix ourselves upon the waypoint of Christ and God and not use ourselves for a moral compass. For if we use our sense of direction, we shall not get far and indeed we will be in much distress, though we would not think it otherwise due to our easily corruptible minds. However, if we rely on Christ as our navigator, He shall never fail us in His directions, if we will but listen to him. He, unlike us, will never let us down or withhold anything that we need to know, but the catch is that we have to be willing to listen to him. We have to know He truly knows the way, and that without following His guidance, we cannot have any hope of finding the way on our own. We have to be willing and able to listen to Him; then willing and able to act on His Direction.

Paul also gives very practical and simple, though hard to follow, directions on living our lives:

  • Be honest;

  • Avoid anger;

  • Do not let anger linger over night;

  • Follow not the guidance of the devil;

  • Quit stealing;

  • Work hard;

  • Think kindness;

  • Speak kindness;

  • Act kindness;

  • Forgive as you would have God forgive you, which He hath done in Jesus Christ!

These are all fairly common sense concepts that when applied are the recipe for a successful and wonderful life here. While there may be hardships here, if we but hold fast to these prinicples which Saint Paul gives, we will find they not only benefit ourselves, but they will help the people around us. And that is what the Gospel is about, spreading the Good News and helping the people around us to become better people and followers of God.

We move on to the Gospel, where Jesus, attending to a sick man, picks up on the evil thoughts of the temple scribes, who think to themselves Jesus blasphemed. However, if they realized who truly the Son of God was, Jesus, they would be shocked if they realized they had just accused God of being a liar and blasphemer. However, the darkness in their hearts, like the vanity of the Gentiles minds Paul talked about, prevents them from seeing the truth of the person of Christ.  Then He asks them, which is easier, to forgive the sins or to have the man “Arise and walk”?

As always, Jesus’ words are important, but only as His actions always match those words. Jesus doesn’t just talk to hear himself talk, unlike some of the more modern “Christian” televised preachers who do.  He talks to make a point and acts in accordance with the point He makes. If we believe His commandments, we will keep them, which means our behavior, our actions, will match His Words.  The book Acts of the Apostles, isn’t “Meditations”, “Philosophies” of the Apostles, but Acts.  Jesus puts forth emphasis on “Actions speak louder than words” through his actions. Actions truly show where a person’s heart is set. He may profess to be a member of Our Lord’s church, but if his actions do not match his profession then we shall clearly know he is not truly our Christian brother. We must make sure our actions match our claimed beliefs in Scripture. If our actions do not match the Scriptures, we are not truly following Christ. We will all struggle with this from time to time, but as long as we return to Christ with true repentant hearts, all will be fine with our souls.

If we profess to be Christians, then we need to act like Christians, not just say that we are Christians.  The ending sentence at the end of the sermons I have given thus far goes, “Be of God”, “Live of God” and finally, last but especially not least “Act of God.” We have to Be of God, and Live of God, to live our lives in a Godly and Christian way, which means as Paul said “Henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk”, so should we not walk in the ways of the world but that of God and His Heavenly Kingdom. Our actions which make up our lives need to be in alignment with the principles of Scripture and it needs to be clearly seen. If our lives are not in alignment with Scripture, then we are not living the faith as God has called us to do.  Though originally, the term Gentile meant non-Jews (Ephesus was an early Gentile Christian church), nowadays Gentiles are those who conform to the world’s philosophies, including Christians who are Christians in name only whose deed or actions do not follow “Be of God, Live of God and Act of God.”

To Act of God, we must follow the commandments of Christ and act according to them, loving our neighbor as we love ourselves. If we do the three step process “Be of God”, “Act of God” and “Live of God”, we will find ourselves in a much better position than walking in the ways of the World.

The time to act is NOW.  Will you act?  For whom will you act?  Will you count the cost before you act?

Action, not diction, is what counts.  It is by your actions you are known.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity

The Vanity of the Mind

2 October 2016, AD

Ephesians 4:17-32 • Matthew 9:1-8

The Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

O

 GOD, forasmuch as without thee we are not able to please thee; Mercifully grant that thy Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

When St. Paul was writing this letter to the church at Ephesus he was focusing on the mostly Gentile church body.   The region around the ancient city of Ephesus was vibrant with commerce, culture, and religion.  There was a great industry of silver smithing, driven by the sale of votive images of the Greek goddess Diana.  This industry would be threatened by the truth and the Gospel that Paul preached in the area earlier in his mission journeys.  Hence there was a great battle between darkness paganism and the Light of the Gospel.  This is the main theme of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians.

Paul lists many past sins and practices that the now regenerate Gentiles of the Ephesian church once practiced.  He wasn’t reminding them to ridicule them, he was showing them from whence they came.  Those who “been taught by him, heard him and are in the truth {that} is Jesus”, should not behave as the blinded Gentile of the region.

Paul explains one needs to put off the former conversation {of} the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;…put away lying, do not give place to the devil, do not steal any more, all behaviors of a person who is not regenerate.

All of these chaotic and angry behaviors should be put to death, they should be set aside, should be avoided, because they bring only alienation from God, uncleanness with greed, in fact as we see in verse 31: “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:”.

Interwoven among the evils and wrongful ways of life, Paul places nuggets of light, bits of hope, treasures of faith, that all believers should aspire to, he especially focuses on that behavior and belief that was the very fabric of life in pagan Ephesus.

Now in unpacking the positive or right behavior aspect of Paul’s letter to the Ephesian church let us re-read the collect for the day.

O

 GOD, forasmuch as without thee we are not able to please thee; Mercifully grant that thy Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord, we cannot please thee, in our human frailty, we plead for aid from the Holy Spirit, to direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  First and foremost we must admit we cannot do this on our own.  You can read earlier in this letter where Paul admonishes believers to not accept the “man-centered” idea of salvation: “…for by grace are ye saved though faith; and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast…”   This concept was very important.  Paul wanted the believer, all believers, to understand that their salvation was dependant on God, through his Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ.   The people of Ephesus were very familiar with the Temple of Diana, where by works, people bringing gifts, small votive offerings {silver images of the goddess} to the temple, they could affect their final destination. In other words by their works they would be saved.  Paul is emphatic in his message to these people and down through the centuries, to us, it is not our works that save us.  Look as what Paul writes in the 10th verse of the second chapter: “…for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Please take this next week to read the whole letter to the Ephesians.  It is a great instruction manual in reference to daily Christian living.  Even though it was written over 2000 years ago, the Truth is unchanging.  We must understand that cardinal compass point about the Word of God.  It is unchanging, period.   We are to be transformed by the Word, not the other way around.  Too many churches today have abandoned the “faith once delivered” and have gone the way of the pagan world, the results is chaos, fear, uncertainty, and a moral abyss that we are as a people tittering on the brink.  Preacher, as long as you have breath, proclaim the truth.

Let us conclude this brief study of this passage from Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus.

As was his custom, Paul left his readers with a note of faith, a point of positive aspiration, a bit of golden truth, let us see what he wrote at the end of this passage.

 …Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:  32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Wow, what a contrast to what the world has to offer.  Look at the anger, chaos, mean-spirited, caustic voicing that is filling the land in recent time.  There is no tenderheartedness, there is no forgiving one another,{at least from mostly one side of the argument}; instead there is bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, evil speaking and malice towards most, wow what a mess.

As believers we need to show that there is another way. We need to show the world that there is only ONE way to salvation. One way to peace, one way to kindness, we need to live our lives as the Gospel directs us to, to show the God has forgiven us for Christ’s sake.  Our Creator has forgiven us because of what His Son did for us.  He died on the Cross for our sins, He was buried, rose again, and now sits on the right hand of God the Father as our Advocate, as our once and for all sacrifice.  Praise God from whom all blessings flow…  Amen and amen.

Let us pray:

O

 ALMIGHTY God, look mercifully upon the world which thou hast redeemed by the blood of thy dear Son, and incline the hearts of many to dedicate themselves to the sacred ministry of thy Church; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O

 LORD our heavenly Father, whose blessed Son came not to be ministered unto, but to minister; We beseech thee to bless all who, following in his steps, give themselves to the service of their fellow men. Endue them with wisdom, patience, and courage, that they may strengthen the weak and raise up those who fall; and, being inspired by thy love, may worthily minister in thy Name to the suffering, the friendless, and the needy; for the sake of him who laid down his life for us, the same thy Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

G

RANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that the words which we have heard this day with our outward ears, may, through thy grace, be so grafted inwardly in our hearts, that they may bring forth in us the fruit of good living, to the honour and praise of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Epistle

Ephesians 4:17-32

Gospel

Matthew 9:1-8

J

esus entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city.

Bishop Dennis is a brilliant speaker.  He is able to take biblical precepts and make them perfectly understandable, even to me.  Oft he provides the text of his sermons and I take the utmost pleasure in passing them on:

Putting Off and Putting On: Part One

Ephesians 4:17-32

Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity

October 2, 2016

Our Epistle for this morning is Ephesians 4:17-32.  In the previous chapters of Ephesians, Paul has said the Church is the People called into existence by God Himself, for the purpose of  being His people and glorifying Him by living holy and righteous lives.  God gives the Church the ultimate gift; the privilege of living forever in such closeness, fellowship, and love with Him, it can only be described as being perpetually filled with the fullness (greatness and presence) of God.  This fullness will ultimately only be realised in Heaven, but we can know some of it here and now by the indwelling Spirit of God, the fellowship of the Church, and the means of grace.

In chapter four, Paul turns to what being part of God’s Church, means to us in everyday life.  His point is that it means everything.   If we are a part of the Church we are to live our lives in conformity with the will and nature of Christ.  We, as Ephesians 4:1 says, “”walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called.”  Being the people who live for and in the glory of God is every Christian’s vocation. It is your life’s work.

Paul goes on to say those who are gathered into Christ as members of His Body and Church, are gathered into a new identity and way of life.  They no longer live according to the patterns and values of the godless peoples and cultures around them (17).  Nor do they live and act merely on the basis of their own desires and ideas, which have been corrupted by human pride, greed, and a general inclination to go our own way instead of God’s.  Instead, they put off their own ways, called the old man in verse 22, and put on the new man of righteousness and holiness, which is created in them by God (23, 24).  The rest of chapter four shows what they have put off and what they have put on.  The verses give a word picture of discarding a wardrobe of rags (our sin) and putting on a new wardrobe, given by God, and consisting of righteousness and of the character of God Himself.

Verses 17-19 give a very unflattering picture of humanity apart from God.  Vanity, in verse 17 refers to the kind of pride that clings to our own ideas and values and refuses to hear and live by God’s.  It is the kind of pride described in Proverbs 16:18, which, “goeth before destruction,” and in Proverbs 29:23 as that which brings men low.  It can be pictured as puny and silly man shaking his fist at God and shouting, “my will be done.” Vanity also carries the meaning of emptiness.  This is what Solomon meant when he wrote the famous words, “vanity of vanities; all is vanity.”  He was saying the passing pleasure and trinkets of the world, with their promises of happiness and peace, are empty illusions. Like mist and rainbows, their promises are without substance, and can never be fully possessed.

Still speaking of humanity apart from God, Paul says their understanding is darkened (18).  He means their minds are like people lost in a cave without a light.  Their hearts are blind, meaning unable to understand the Great Being who created and upholds the physical realm.  They are past feeling, meaning they are calloused to the working and calling of God.  The Gospel goes out to them.  They know the story of Christ; they hear the Holy Spirit  urging them to come to Christ, pleading with them to repent and be saved, inviting them to let God love them.  But they have become as calloused to the Gospel as a farmer’s hands on the plow.

The result is that they give themselves over to lasciviousness and uncleanness (19).  They give themselves over to every kind of sinful self-indulgence they can think of.  They devote themselves to the very vanities Solomon wrote about, with the same results of abject despair about everything.

Verses 20-24 are the pivotal verses in this chapter, and in the book of Ephesians.  Their point is that the true Christian has put away the corrupt things of verses 17-19.  Paul says those things were part of the old man, the pre-Christian man, the Before Christ man.  But the Anno Domini person, the new man, has put off, like a filthy and vermin infested garment, the old man, which was corrupted and lived by them (22).  And we have put on something new.   We have put on a new man, “which after God,” meaning, in the likeness or image of God, “is created in righteousness and true holiness” (24).  Righteousness was one of the most important meanings of being created in the image of God.  Thus, after creating Man, male and female, God looked over all He had created and, “behold, it was very good” (Gen. 1:31).  He didn’t say it was pleasant, or pretty.  He said it was good, meaning the perfect goodness of God was part of its being, especially in man.  That goodness  was destroyed in the Fall of humanity.  We lost our goodness.  We became vain.  Our mind, or, understanding was darkened.  We were alienated from God.  We lost the knowledge of God. Our hearts became blind to His will and His Word.  We became calloused to His teaching about goodness and truth, and to His loving call to return to Him.  But in Christ, the image of God is being restored in us.  We are becoming like God again through His work in us.

Therefore, let us not quench the work of the Holy Spirit in us.  Let us gladly open ourselves to His influence.  Let us inconvenience ourselves, and even discomfort ourselves to put ourselves under His influence.  Let us adopt the attitude of Paul, who, realising that his great need in life and eternity is God, was determined to let nothing prevent him from growing closer to God.  His attitude is expressed well in Philippians 3, verses 8 and 14 I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, and, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

But who is able to do this?  Mere human beings cannot do it by our own strength.  Our natural tendency is to fall back into those things we are called to put away from us.  We need God’s help.  We need Him to enable and direct us into His good things.  Thus we pray as the Collect for this Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity leads us:

O

 God, forasmuch as without thee we are not able to please thee; Mercifully grant that thy Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity

Titus

Chapter 2

B

ut speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; 10 Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. 11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. 15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Consider, if you will, the message of St. Paul in our epistle lesson to St. Titus: But speak thou the thing which become sound doctrine (2:1). The apostle also admonished young Timothy to, Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us (II St. Timothy 1:13-14). It would seem that every minister who has been called of the Lord ought to be in harmony with those doctrines which have been set down within the pages of Scripture. They should have no doubts and no reservations about it. And as they have been called of God via the Holy Ghost to preach the word to others, so too are they have they become the deposit of the word by the in- filling by the same Spirit.

In another epistle, the apostle noted that, But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (I Corinthians 12:7). Matthew Henry noted that, “Whatever gifts God confers on any man, he confers them that he may do good with them… The outward gifts of his bounty are to be used for his glory and employed in doing good to others. No man has them merely for himself. They are a trust put into his hands to profit all; and the more he profits others with them, the more abundantly will they turn to his account in the end. [These] gifts are bestowed not for show; but for service… not to magnify those who have them, but to edify others.”

Consider the life of Moses. He was given spiritual gifts to lead the children of Israel from bondage in Egypt to liberty in the Promised Land. Consider also the life and leadership of Joshua. He too was filled with the Spirit as he led Israelites across the Jordan River to victory after victory over the numerically superior forces of the Canaanites .

Look at the life of Ruth, whose tribal roots were set aside via the love she possessed for her mother-in-law Naomi. Her own words confirm her faith when she said, for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God (Ruth 1:16). Ruth embraced the LORD and found favor in his eyes. She later became the wife of Boaz and their descendant was King David, son of Jesse.

Think on the life of Daniel. He and his friends faced many challenges as members of Nebuchadnezzar’s court. Yet in spite of those things, he survived and prospered via the power of the Holy Ghost and all because he was faithful to God’s word written.

Finally consider the lives of the apostles who proclaimed the good news of our Lord across the known world and they did so with harvests that have continued to this day. As a result of their teaching and preaching, they made it possible for us to have that saving knowledge of the gospel of truth.

Across the millennia, God has called out saints to carry out the terms of the Great Commission. All of the aforementioned biblical figures sought to follow God’s commandments and as a result became blessings to future generations. And the same is true for our time as well and every faithful gospel minister ought to do likewise for that is what our Lord expects.

That said, it should be woefully apparent that an ever-increasing number of ministers today have abandoned the sound words and doctrines of our Lord and Saviour. These false shepherds possess an image of our Lord which is the antithesis of what is found in Scripture. Should it then be surprising that they preach a false gospel and a de-natured Christ? Oh, they will say Jesus was a good teacher whose words we ought follow as a philosopher, but not as the only begotten Son of God[1]. They are unable to preach a convincing sermon on the resurrection of our Lord because many do not believe that such was a real event and hence, there will be no resurrection of the dead in Christ. (Truth be told, a road-kill sermon is likely the only one you could get them to honestly preach regarding the resurrection. Not much spiritual comfort there.) If there is divinity in their understanding of Jesus, it will be confined solely to his words and deeds of caring and compassion, but not to those things of the supernatural such as his coming kingdom and, goodness no, not about judgment, hell and everlasting damnation for those who have rejected his offering of free grace. They have embraced the false notion that God will show his love to all persons unconditionally, regardless of their belief or behavior. And with that in mind, they will not preach or teach anything that would encourage a wayward soul to turn from his or her wickedness and live.

But this is, after all, academic as the sound words— sound doctrines— of Scripture do not support their jaded views regarding the doctrines and words of our Lord and Master. They may worm and squirm around the passages that call them out as frauds, but they cannot confront them directly without being crushed by them. That is why they will avoid them if they can, or brush them off as irrelevant if they must consider them at all.

The regenerated person in Christ understands that true gospel preaching must include the love of God for all through his free gift of salvation in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. They know that by extension it must include the need for confession as well as obedience God’s word written. And further, it must also include the admonition that God’s wrath will fall upon all who would resist his word and commandment. Those who have been born again of the Spirt realize that sound words are found in the presentation of God’s law because it convicts us in our hearts, and humbles us before a righteous and holy God. At that point the apostle asked, O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death (Romans 7:24)? He then supplied the answer: I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 7:25). There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:1-2). We have hope in our Lord Jesus Christ that as he has overcome death and is at the right hand of the Father, so too will we also overcome death and rise to life eternal in his kingdom. Sound words become for us who are in Christ comforting words.

But for those who reject the gospel message, there can be no admission into God’s kingdom. If a person passes the precincts of this life without accepting the free grace which God has supplied via his only begotten Son, then they are doomed. And acceptance of our Lord must be more than a mere belief in God, or in some philosophical understanding of Jesus as a good teacher. It means accepting him for who he is as God’s only begotten Son. It means accepting his virgin birth, his miracles, his commandments, his suffering and death on the cross, his descent into the earth, his glorious resurrection and ascension, and his coming again to establish his kingdom which will have no end.

The New Ager, the errant, the deviant, the mocker, the doubter, and the patent refusenik of the gospel message has no capacity to accept Christ Jesus. They are natural rather than holy. They are infidels rather than of the true faith. They are lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. They are covetous, boasters, blasphemers, without natural affection, possessing a form of godliness but denying its power (II St. Timothy 3:1-5).

On the other hand, those who would hold fast to the form of sound words will do as God has commanded. They will receive with joy the gospel of our Lord. They will be justified and sanctified in the faith. They will love God with all their hearts and souls. They will seek to become more Christ-like every day. They will seek to add to the kingdom such as will come in and be saved via their witnessing on behalf of Christ. Clearly, the true minister of the gospel will not hesitate to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ before others. May our most gracious heavenly Father bless each of you with true repentance, amendment of life and the grace and consolation of his most holy Spirit. That with his indwelling, you will go from strength to strength, working in that field of endeavor which he has called you.

Let us pray,

F

ather, assist us as we hold fast to that which you have given us in thy word written and help us to administer the same to others; for this we ask in the name of thy dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

[1]The Trilemma of Jack Lewis in Mere Christianity – I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.
