Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Trinity

Sunday Report

Today we celebrated the Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Trinity Sunday.

United States Presidential Election

We are coming up on the American Presidential Election.  No candidate will ever be perfect.  But, since Calvin Coolidge our presidents have not really been Democrat or Republican, they have truly represented the Government Party.  We are sliding downhill at a rapid pace.  I ask as you consider voting this prayer from a great patriot and friend of mine Colonel Rob Blissard, USAF Retired:

Be still, and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10)

Dear Beloved God in Heaven; Please give us a president who loves this country and everything it stands for.  Please give us a president who respects you as the one true God. Please give us a president who will, with your help, restore this nation to its former glory, the way you created her. Please give us a president who will not destroy our Churches. Please help us to respect what you have given to us and not take anything for granted ever again. Please God, weaken the evil and strengthen the good, both within and without. May our eyes be opened. All this we ask in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Amen

As never before in the history of this country has this plea been so necessary …. In God We Trust and we pray that GOD WILL BLESS AMERICA!!!!

– Rob Blissard

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

St. John 14:23

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and lips that they speak no guile: let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

I St. Peter 3:10-12

A “talebearer” carries all the stories he can pick up, true or false, from house to house, to make mischief and sow discord. He reveals secrets which he has been entrusted with, and so breaks the laws, and forfeits all the privileges of friendship and [citizenship].

Matthew Henry

17th and 18th century English pastor and author

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The propers for the Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Trinity can be found on Page 223-224:

The Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Trinity

The Collect.

O

 LORD, we beseech thee, absolve thy people from their offences; that through thy bountiful goodness we may all be delivered from the bands of those sins, which by our frailty we have committed. Grant this, O heavenly Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen.

The Epistle for today came from the First Chapter of Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians, beginning at the Third Verse.  Writing to the people of Colossus, Paul tells them that he is constantly praying for them and exhorts them to do their very best to actually fulfill the promises they have made to God, to Walk the Walk, not just Talk the Talk; to study hard the Word and use the strength they will get from God to act on the things they have learned and professed.

W

e give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard  of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, for the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: as ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ; who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and long-suffering with joyfulness; giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.

The Holy Gospel came from the Ninth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew beginning at the Eighteenth Verse.  While Jesus was talking to some of the disciples of John the Baptist, one of the local politicians whose daughter had just died came to Him with faith that He could return her to life.  As he was leaving His meeting with the disciples to follow the politician, a woman who had been ill for many years, reached out in faith to “touch His garment.”  She knew He was the key to her life, though she likely had no real understanding of just how.  She had faith in Jesus.  As she touched his garment, He turned saying, “Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole.”  She was instantly healed.  Like the Faithful Centurion[1]: Truth set her free, faith made her whole. Jesus continued on to the politician’s house and returned his daughter to the living.  Consider that in none of these cases did Jesus’ saving grace hinge on actions by the saved, but rather their faith that Jesus would save them, then acting in accordance with that faith.  It was not what they did, but what He did that saved them.  But, His actions were in accord with their faith.

W

hile Jesus spake these things unto John’s disciples, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples. And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: for she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, he said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose. And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.

The Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Trinity

The Collect.

            We may not have considered how we came to know God at the moment of our being born anew into that Royal and Heavenly family. Most of us probably believe that we, by our own meritorious dispositions, decided to turn to God and receive Him as our Lord. We may even believe that God was anxiously awaiting our decision, helpless to affect the outcome. Does this line up with the God described in today’s lesson? The text is about two people who came to Christ out of urgent need, and another who was unable even to consider His Name or Person. None were professed followers of Christ when they came to Him out of their abject need. Let us consider Jairus, the Woman with an Issue of Blood, and the precious little twelve-year-old girl who died while her father sought the Lord’s help; but first, let us review the terms of today’s Collect:

            According to today’s Scripture-based Collect, who alone absolves of sin; and who initiates the saving works needful for our souls? God alone absolves of sin through the benefits of the Redemption made available in His only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ. And who is the sinner? Every man and woman born into this life. While we are yet in our sins, we are as good as dead – and the dead know nothing at all. (see Ephesians 2) We were unable to help ourselves in any way. But when Christ called us forth from the dead, we heard His voice and could not help but respond to it just as did Lazarus. You will recall that Matthew knew nothing of the Lord as he sat at the table of customs; yet, when Jesus called him to “Follow me,” he immediately left his counting and followed Christ. 9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. (Matt 9:9)The same is true of the other disciples. Sometimes we make too much of a new convert’s lack of familiarity with the Bible and judge them to be of a lesser calling than we ourselves. But if they are called of Christ, it is He that shall teach them all things regarding the things of God.

The Epistle from Romans 6:

22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:22-23) The sinner, we must admit, can do nothing good in the eyes of God. But when the Holy Ghost places and Anchor in his heart, he cannot resist coming to follow Christ. The lost sinner is paying daily the wages of sin for he is already dead awaiting the summons to life of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Old Testament passage from Malachi echoes truths parallel to those of the Gospel Text:

16 Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. 17 And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. 18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.  (Mal 3:16-18)  1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. 2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. 3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts. (Mal 4:1-3)

            The same Lord who healed the woman with an issue of blood, and restored to life the little daughter of Jairus. He acted in His same nature as “the Sun of righteousness with Healing in His wings!” He heals not only the infirmities of the body, but the desolation and depravity of the soul.

The Gospel Text from Matthew 9:18-26 and Mark 5:21-43

The world may be divided into two distinct groups – those immense numbers who do not believe, and those very few who do believe, and believe unto salvation. The unbelievers provide no venue for God’s miracles. They separate themselves from the grace of God by their unbelief. Those who believe invite the Hand of God to work according to His will, even if that will supersedes the Natural Law (which the Maker of Natural Law is able to do). Many are conformed to that image of God that He intended for them by being called evn in their ignorance of Him.

Let us consider the man Jairus first from the text. He was a well-to-do fellow and a leader of the local synagogue. His loyalties were beholding to the Scribes, Pharisees, and Lawyers of the Temple. He was apparently from the Capernaum side of the Galilean Sea. He had a great dread and despondence arising out of the burden of a seriously ill daughter. (Matthew summarizes the occasion by stating the daughter was dead outright; but Mark 5 tells us that the girl was seriously ill – near death. Both were right for the girl was indeed dead when Christ finally arrived. No one can comprehend the grief and angst of a father whose daughter is at the point of death. Jairus did not go before the Scribes and Pharisees since he knew in his heart that they coulod do nothing to save his daughter. He was at the end of his spiritual rope. If his daughter would recover, it would necessarily be by means of a miracle beyond the ability of any religious leaders he knew. He had heard of this Jesus. The illness of his daughter gave him the meager measure of faith needed to seek the help of Jesus.

Great need and urgent occasions in men’s lives today is often necessary to drive them to the Altar of Mercy which Christ is! Jairus is the ruler of a synagogue. His political and religious world does not naturally include Jesus. Though Jairus has heard much of Christ, and seems to have surely believed that He was able to do the works of God, he was reluctant to break the bonds of political and peer pressure to come to Christ in fair weather. But now the beloved little daughter of Jairus has taken ill to the point of death. Extraordinary ordeal may lead to extraordinary faith – and this is the case with Jairus. When the die of death is cast before him of one most beloved, Jairus is forced to reach into the depth of his heart for the courage to do that which is expedient and right. He runs to the LORD, and is willing to accept the ridicule of the Pharisees in doing so.

What did Jairus do that resulted in his most amazing blessing? Well, first Jairus came to the very Fountain of Life that he believed would sustain his little daughter’s life. That is the first step of every sinner – COME TO CHRIST! That Fountain of Living Waters will grant life, not only in this world, but eternal life in the world to come. So, Jairus musters the courage and fortitude to come to Jesus.

Secondly, Jairus worshipped Christ. Mark 5:22 says that Jairus fell at the feet of Jesus. Though it is very true that every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess to Christ, timing is everything when it comes to salvation. Our great need is at the day and hour that worship of Christ will result in salvation – not after the curtain has fallen and it will be too late to acknowledge Him as Lord. Jairus acknowledged the Divine power of Christ to heal. His mind was upon the body of a precious little girl at the point of death, but that power Jairus acknowledged also extended to the healing of her precious soul.

Thirdly, Jairus not only came to the Fount of Life, but he also expressed his faith through prayer! How all-important is prayer in the life of a saint. Prayer is the steam upon which the engine is driven. His prayer was not a doubting, but a believing, prayer. “My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.” Yes, little did Jairus realize that his prayer was so full of truth! Even if the child was dead, she shall live if only Christ lays His hand on her! Christ does not view death in the same way we view it. It is not the end, but the very beginning. Christ calls that terror, SLEEP. “Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth.

Word came to Jairus as he was with Jesus that his little daughter had died. But just a little faith goes a long way with Christ. He would go a step farther than healing the girl – He would awaken her from the sleep of death! But, even so, Christ did not merely lay His Hand on her – He, instead, took her lovingly by the hand and, with a voice that penetrates centuries and the ears of death, said, “Talitha cumi!” This is a term of Chaldee origin meaning, “Young girl, arise!” What does one, even if dead, do at such a command from the portals of Heaven itself? Immediately, she awoke in the very Presence of Christ, and He was holding her hand! Every believer will have that privilege at the instant of death. Despite the ridicule and jest of the unbelievers without, she arose and walked, and was given food to eat at the command of Christ, for she was hungry! (Mark 5:42, 43) Death knows no hunger, but the truly living thirst for the Bread of Life!

            Miracles of heart always accompany miracles of body. As Jesus journeyed to the dying room of Jairus’s daughter, another miracle of faith had taken shape in the heart of a poor and desperate woman taken with a long-lasting (twelve years) issue of blood. The woman had spent all of her living on physicians who had not helped her in the least, but rather she had grown steadily worse. She had spent the lonely hours, days, months, and years in pain and a sure knowledge that her affliction led to a manmade grave of death. She was destitute of means of living as all her money had been spent on physicians, so-called. Then, her blessed and fortunate ears heard of Jesus! Hearing is not always enough. We must act on the hearing of Him, and this woman heard, believed, and sought Him out as an answer to the affliction in her body and the pain in her heart.

Hearing a commotion in the street, she came out and discovered that this man, Jesus, was approaching in a great throng of men. How could she approach Him? And, as well, how COULD she approach him being ‘unclean’ with an issue of blood as the Jewish Law ruled? I know her dread, for I was there – and so were you, if you believe! We all were that woman, and we were Jairus as well! There was a moment in time that we arose, like the woman, from our sick beds of the leprosy of sin, and sought solace in the healing Balm of Gilead. Like Jairus, facing the misery and despair of dying love, we sought the very Fountainhead of Life and Love…..and He answered!

There were so many people pressing around the Lord that the woman despaired of reaching Him. Quite often it is the very ones nearest the Lord that hoard His Presence and prevent others from coming to Him. But the faith of this woman would not be turned away. It was a fervent and persistent faith that would not admit of defeat! She dared not disturb His dignity out of a high reverence for His Person, so she contrived to innocent touch the hem of His garment without disturbing His Peace. …and she did! Not the slightest expression of faith goes unnoticed by our blessed Savior! He felt the touch of the woman from eternity past until the moment of its expression in time. Who touched my clothes?(Mark 5:30) This is a question framed by our Lord long before that encounter on the dusty streets of Capernaum – “Who touched me?” Have you dared touch Christ with the prayers of your heart?

Have you, friend, wept the bitter tears of Jairus for your living young ones who linger in the walk of death to which all sinners belong? Have you arisen from your sick beds of sin and went seeking Christ, the Healer and Preserver of Life? If not, why not? Why, He is passing on your street even now! He will journey to your house today to restore life to a precious child of your greatest love. But, your faith must invite the miracle of life! The greater miracle of Christ is not a restoration to temporary life, but to Life

            Now, there was a third little soul involved in this account which we have already touched upon – the twelve year old daughter of Jairus. Helpless in the sleep of death and devoid of any consciousness whatsoever, her lifeless little body awaited the Voice of Christ to arise. Lazarus had heard that Voice. The son of the Woman of Tyre had heard that Voice, and countless others. All who believe and sleep in the faith of Christ shall hear that Voice in due time.

            We see that all kinds and classes of people are called by Christ. The man who is a village preacher, the woman with a serious blood affliction, and the lifeless little girl child of Jairus all alike heard and responded to the Voice of our Lord. Have you?

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

Amen.

Consider these words from the Collect, … absolve thy people from their offences; that through thy bountiful goodness we may all be delivered from the bands of those sins, which by our frailty we have committed. …

The Collect asks God to pardon our offences, that is our wrongs, failures and failures to act as we should, where we have “erred and stray from His Way like lost sheep”, through His great mercy.   Note, through the mercy of God, not because we have been good, but because we cannot be good without Him in the form of the Holy Ghost.  Without His Light, we are darkness.  We need Him to deliver us from the multitudes of sins, by which our frail nature of ungodliness, we have committed.  Each day we find new ways to sin, or at least we think that until we find in fact there is no new thing under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 1:9)

Truly there is nothing new. The human heart is always as dark and depraved without the shining light of the Holy Spirit as it ever has been. People are always seeking ways to get around God and His Laws, but they truly cannot. Our only hope is to be in Him and be reborn in the Spirit. As Abraham Lincoln said in the famous Gettysburg address “That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom.”  Only under God, can be reborn a new, and as he said, our freedom will be reborn again.  We can only be reborn in the spirit and not the flesh as Nicodemus found out when he came to Jesus by night. In order to be re-born a new in the spirit, we first have to ask for our sins to be pardoned and be delivered from our sins by Jesus Christ Our Lord and Our Heavenly Father.

And once we ask for our sins to be pardoned, we have to go forth and persevere in our efforts not to sin again. Only then can we be truly re-born. Through a sense of godliness, we obtain that “new birth” of freedom. If everybody in this country followed that simple advice, just think of how great our country would be. Look at Abraham Lincoln for an example of a Godly man, one of the greatest Presidents ever elected, who by following God and His Word, helped preserve the Union of this wonderful nation, albeit at a great cost to our freedom and with a huge expansion of government[2].

In the Epistle, St. Paul tells the Colossians if we are to be reborn through Christ into a “new birth of freedom”, as Lincoln said, we must place our hope not on Earth, but in Our Heavenly Father and his abode above.

Unlike earth where moth and rust doth corrupt and thieves break through and steal, in heaven, we shall encounter none of that. We shall encounter none of the imperfections we see here on Earth daily. It is truly a wonderful place to be. We must always set our sights on our destination of heaven.  It is truly the only place where we can place any hope and not be disappointed. God will never fail us; we just need to not fail Him. We have to do our best to follow Him here on earth and do our best to spread to Word to the people around us. If we do this, the truth shall shine forth through in our work, at home, in our daily lives and people shall see Christ working through us for His purposes. If we follow what God asks, which is a very common theme in the Bible, as it is in my sermons, we prosper and do well.

Which brings us to the point of the Gospel, in which Christ heals a woman, who has such supreme faith in Christ healing her, that if she but touches his cloak, she knows she will be healed. She did not have any doubts about Christ’s power to heal her. She truly had a solid faith.  She depended not on the talisman of the cloak, but the power of Christ with which she expected to connect. She knew Christ had the power to heal her and believed He would heal her. Christ was impressed by the woman’s faith.  If we had the faith of this woman in Christ, imagine how we could impact the world around us. And, I might add, what is stopping us?  The ruler whose daughter had died also shared this amazing faith in Christ.  He had zero doubt whatsoever Christ would do these things.

Also, the faithful centurion and the man whose son was sick had this tremendous faith. The faith of all of these, in particular the ruler whose daughter had died was truly strong. Christ recognizes this man’s faith and rewards with the girl’s resurrection.  Quite a surprise for those who had just laughed and scorned him, basically telling him “That is impossible, you can’t raise the girl from the dead.”

He proved them wrong.  He gave a very practical demonstration that much is denied men, but though God all things are possible.  But, we need the faith of the woman, the faith of the ruler and the faith of the centurion.  We must follow Him and the plan that He lays out for us. We have to be willing to listen and be ready to follow Him.  In time, we shall too have an amazing reward, through our faith and we shall be in a “new birth of freedom” from otherwise certain death. We can do things thought impossible, if we put our trust in Him, as I have aforementioned.

This is what Jesus meant when he said we could move mountains with our faith. If we put our trust and faith in Him, nothing that we need to do is impossible for us to achieve. We must keep listening to His Guidance and to do our best to follow Him.

Works must follow faith however. We cannot have a full faith, unless we act to demonstrate the faith. Faith is demonstrated through our actions, and our Lord set this in His Example for us to follow.

Jesus’s miracles were all about actions, not just in word, but in deed. He did both, as we must also. If we only talk the talk, but do not walk our talk, then our words mean nothing.  If we walk the walk also, our words have weight, meaning, as we become men and women of the Word. I say of the Word and not like the old saying, he is a man of his word. For we want to become a Man/Woman of His Word, not our word! If we go by His Word, we can never go wrong. We always seem to go on our word and that is where we get into trouble. It is action not just diction which counts. The two can go together, but in the end, actions speak louder than words.

Following this theme of words and action, on preparing my sermon for the upcoming Veteran’s Day, I realized God has used godly men for our freedom to be kept, by laying down their lives for ours. No greater love could be found in the world, then those men who died in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War I, the Pacific and the European theatres of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, Desert 1 and 2, Afghanistan and countless dirty little wars where the freedom of our country and that others was threatened.

Through a sense of godliness, these men went to battle on our behalf, as Christ battled Satan on our behalf.  These men did not just go into battle with the godliness, they prayed hard for them, they prayed for each minute just to stay alive, especially in the hellholes of the Pacific and the European theaters.  The danger they faced were far more perilous than the ones we face today.  We overcame the enemy, not only because of our superior tactics, but we had men ready and willing to take the enemy on and do our best to prevail, and that followed God.

The Collect, Epistle and Gospel tie together, laying out, detailing and reinforcing the same message, ultimately.  We have to have faith in Christ and God, and be willing to accept the Holy Ghost into us, that through Him, we may do good works on Earth and that we will receive our just reward for doing what is right in the end.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Trinity

This month we remember the life of our communion’s founder, Bishop James Parker Dees. Fifty-three years ago, he departed from the Episcopal Church as it had loosed itself from the clear teaching of Scripture and was descending into apostasy. The Bible tells us that we must contend for the faith (St. Jude 3). That means we are to stand up for God’s word written against all else. So it follows that if a church body abandons God’s word, then it becomes the Christian’s duty to leave that body and find another where God’s word is respected and observed.

The words of St. Paul in his second epistle to the Corinthian church (6:17) are unmistakably clear: Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord and touch not the unclean thing and I will receive you. It was on account of his faithfulness to God’s word and his courage in the face of so much vitriol Bishop Dees left the dying body of the Episcopal Church he loved and established the Anglican Orthodox Church. Since that time over half a century ago, the AOC has remained an independent Anglican body, upholding only those doctrines that are firmly grounded upon the inerrant word of God.

To its credit, the Anglican Orthodox Church has consistently stood against ecumenism, or the acceptance of all faiths and denominations as valid regardless of their teachings. The old line denominations of Christendom have over the last quarter century fallen into Lucifer’s snare of Political Correctness. The PC movement’s principal goal has been more about silencing criticism, rather than preventing injustice. It is a placebo and not a solution. It has morphed many churches into a perverse form of Christianity via the unbiblical tenets of “everybody is good,” “everybody is saved,” “everybody can learn the basic skills,” (oops, that last one is a piece of Proto-PC educational jargon which is as false as the basic premises of ecumenism, but you get the point).

When one examines the current state of PC churches, we find that they advocate what I have termed their three great principles which are, “tolerance”, “inclusion” and “peace”.  These dovetail nicely for as they are tolerant, they are also “inclusive” or better yet, “permissive.” As a result, they have exchanged the exclusivity of the Christian faith for a watered down version of the same and all for the sake of unity and numbers. But unity for the sake of unity alone is bad theology. As the prophet Amos once noted, Can two walk together except they be agreed (3:3)? If the believer is yoked to any infidel within the church, the yoke will be unequal. And how can it be otherwise?

Think about it. Tolerance for sinful behaviors will by its very nature open the door to an inclusive understanding of salvation, which then requires that the church member accept the PC church’s understanding of the word “peace” with relation to God’s promises and doctrines as found in the Bible. But such an understanding will cost the true Christian dearly. For if the faithful wish to remain within that particular PC church for whatever reason— family, friends, business associates, memories of days gone by and the like— then such a one will be required to accept that body’s twisted understanding of the Bible.

On the other hand, the peace which our Lord gives us is a settled spirit in an unsettled world. We Christians have God’s peace which comes to us via the Holy Ghost the Comforter. The PC church’s peace is, for the unregenerate, a feeling of freedom from the indictment of sin even as they willfully sin against the God. But for the regenerated soul remaining within a PC church, they are to meekly harbor a spirit of acquiescence or acceptance for all that goes on within that church body. That is hardly something that would supply comfort as they witness all that theybelieve in— which has been stated plainly in Scripture— violated and rejected by those who are in opposition to God’s word written. If you think differently, then consider the words of the apostle Peter in his second epistle. He wrote that Lot was, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked; For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds (2:7-8).

Another aspect of apostasy within PC churches is theological liberalism which encompasses the denial of Scripture as inerrant truth, the denial of the virgin birth of our Lord, that there is neither an individual nor a hierarchal form of evil in the personage of the Devil and his hosts of fallen spirits, that hell does not exist, and it accepts as part of its inclusivity any number of sinful behaviors that have been plainly prohibited by Scripture.

These things did not come about overnight but were introduced gradually so as not to shake the unsuspecting congregants from the comfort of their pews. And only after some of the more controversial elements were introduced that there arose a hue and cry among the faithful. Unfortunately, by that time the process of change had so metastasized that there was little realistic hope of recovering that which was lost. It was gone, having mutated into another belief system that followed after another gospel and worshiped another Christ (see Galatians 1:6-9).

It was on account of the preceding point, that the acceptance of said heretical beliefs and practices by the various episcopal bodies has gone hand in hand with their relegation of the Anglican Articles of Religion to mere footnote status. The Thirty-Nine Articles had kept the Anglican Church and its various subdivisions in doctrinal purity. However, once these were abandoned, said churches were then loosed from their ecclesiastical moorings and have ever since been tossed to and fro by every wind of false doctrine and every evil way.

And last but certainly not least, the AOC has maintained the Authorized Version of Scripture as the Bible of choice for use within our churches. One can go online today and find Christian web sites where the King James Only churches are roundly condemned as cultist in nature. Also, anyone who dares to take issue with those who use the other questionable versions (those which came after 1881 beginning with the Revised Version right on up to the new NIV) are regularly subjected to what my grandfather used call, “a venting of the spleen” by those who cannot abide the Authorized Version for one reason or another.

And why all this hatred toward the King James? Because for many generations, countless believers have relied on it for comfort and for edification in their Christian walk. It is the word of God written in a very elegant and reverent form of the English language. If you use the other versions and compare them with the King James Version, you will find that they will have missing words, missing phrases and missing passages. It is well documented the NIV (which has become the most popular of the new versions) has some 64,000 plus words less than the Authorized Version.

I have often heard the comment the Authorized Version is an incomplete translation, or it is not “up-to-date” or it is hard to understand. Well, let’s consider a few points for clarity. The King James Version is based on the Textus Receptus: a Greek text of New Testament which was developed in the 16th century from a host of Byzantine manuscripts and fragments while the new versions are largely based on two Alexandrian texts that were the likely products of Origen, a noted Christian heretic from the 3rd century AD or several of his associates. These were later collated by two apostate Anglican scholars named Hort and Westcott who used them to develop their own Greek text from which the Revised Version of the Bible was created in 1881. Their corrupted Greek text has become the base for all of the new versions thanks to the work of modern scholarship. Now, why on earth would you accept a bible that has a base text developed by one heretic and formulated into another by two more? Such is a good example of spreading bad seed and the master of deception is behind it.

Bishop Dees set out to found an episcopal body that would remain faithful to God’s word written. He sought to educate young men in the fundamentals of sound doctrine and worship so that they too would be faithful ministers. He might be compared to the noble Epaphras of Colosse (Colossians 1:7-8) in that he was a learned and faithful minister of Christ being well-studied in the Scriptures. When he witnessed the error of the Episcopal Church, he raised his voice in favor of the truth of God’s word written, even when it was not popular to do so. And he was an able leader of our communion as he set up a worldwide ministry which continues to this day.

So when naysayers criticize us for being too small, or for meeting in private homes, or because our ministers do not wear superfluous ornaments and vestments, or because we hold to the foundational doctrines of Anglican Christianity via our use of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer and the King James Bible; we respond we are remaining faithful to the very words of the Scriptures. We believe we ought to keep our Lord’s commands, not compromise them for whatever plum the devil and his earthly puppets will dangle before us. Bishop Dees resisted such in 1963, and we are obliged to do the same today. As we remember his sacrifices and his trials, let us vow to keep our church firmly grounded on the Rock of Christ and his word written. May it please our heavenly Father to assist us in this quest as we continue to hold fast to the sound doctrines which we have been given till he comes again.

Let us pray:

D

ear LORD, who art the author of all sound doctrine; guide this our Anglican Orthodox Church into all truth; fill our ministers and members with thy most holy Spirit; that through our witness, we will bear fruit in thy name; for this we ask in the name of him who gave us the Great Commission, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

The Islamist group (ISIS) took over Quaragosh, the biggest Christian city in Iraq; 164 men, women and children were beheaded.  People ask where is God?  The real question is where are the people to enforce God’s will.  Pray the people of the world will see Allah for who he is, the Devil.  Pray for those who remain behind that they might find a way to safety.

[1] The centurion at Capernaum whose servant is ill:  Matthew Chapter 8 verses 5 to 13:

And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

See how this story matches that of the woman:

  • ·         His servant was sick;
  • ·         He knew Christ could help;
  • ·         He was prepared to ask Christ for help;
  • ·         He knew that Christ was in a position of power;
  • ·         He didn’t even have to be near the servant to help

The centurion wasn’t someone who went to get a doctor, or an itinerant herbalist. He went seeking a miracle, and that is what his faith got him.  This centurion had faith, greater faith than Christ had ever found. Yet who was he? He wasn’t a scribe or Hebrew scholar. He wasn’t a member of the local synagogue. He was a member of the hated, oppressing, occupying army.

[2]The American Civil War was fought not over slavery, but over States Rights.  Make no mistake, the right being disputed at the time was slavery.  Many will say the wrong side won, including the noted thinker Thomas Sowell.  Slavery was an institution whose time was long passed, it did not serve anyone, master or slave.  It was counter to the Word and should never have existed here.  Truly it was an instrument of the Devil and was used to harm our country.
