Sunday Report

Today was Septuagesima, the Third Sunday before Lent.  Want to know more about Septuagesima?  There is a nice explanation at the end of the report.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has a few great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

The mere belief of the facts and doctrines of Christianity will never save our souls. Such belief is no better than the belief of devils. They all believe and know that Jesus is the Christ. They believe that he will one day judge the world and cast them down into endless torment. It is a solemn and sorrowful thought that on these points some professing Christians have even less faith than the devil. There are some who doubt the reality of hell and the eternity of punishment. Such doubts as these find no place except in the hearts of self-willed men and women. There is no infidelity among devils.

The Christian religion is the religion of our country. From it are derived our prevalent notions of the character of God, the great moral governor of the universe. On its doctrines are founded the peculiarities of our free institutions.

Islamic violence is not a response to Western colonialism. Not only does it predate it… Muslim civil wars will continue even if the West never intervenes in them because their part of the world is fundamentally unstable. These conflicts will lead to the displacement of millions of people. But even without violence, economic opportunism alone will drive millions to the West. And those millions carry with them the dysfunction of their culture that will make them a burden and a threat. If Muslims can’t reconcile their conflicts at home, what makes us think that they will reconcile them in Europe? Instead of resolving their problems through migration, they only export them to new shores. The same outbursts of Islamic violence, xenophobia, economic malaise and unsustainable growth follow them across seas and oceans, across continents and countries. Distance is no answer. Travel is no cure. Solving Syria will solve nothing. The Muslim world is full of fault lines. It’s growing and it’s running out of room to grow. We can’t save Muslims from themselves. We can only save ourselves from their violence. The permanent Muslim refugee crisis will never stop being our crisis unless we close the door.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister or our Deacon Striker.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 118-120, with the Collect first:

The Sunday called Septuagesima, or the

third Sunday before Lent.

The Collect.

O

 LORD, we beseech thee favourably to hear the prayers of thy people; that we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Epistle for today came from the Ninth Chapter of the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians beginning at the  Twenty-Fourth Verse.  Paul tells us that we must strive for mastery over ourselves so that we can gain the crown of eternal life offered us at great cost by our Lord Jesus Christ.  We must each do our own personal best to control our own actions and behavior so we can follow God’s Plan for each of us.  We must be bold and certain in our actions.

K

NOW ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize?  So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: but I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection; lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

The Holy Gospel for today came from the Twentieth Chapter of the Gospel of Saint Matthewbeginning at the First Verse.  Often quoted, this is the very important parable of the vineyard.  While it appears to be principally directed towards Christians wanting to be “first” in importance and the like, it has a more direct meaning.  It is a fine lesson in “buyer’s remorse” or coveting of jobs or similar concepts.  If you got a good deal, it does not change because someone else got a “better” deal.  Take what you got, go forth and be happy.  Other meanings abound.  For a very direct application, what this means is “cradle” Christians are no more likely to go to heaven than this morning’s convert.  They just get to enjoy the Christian experience longer.  One note, if you wait until the last minute to join the gang, your time here might end before you get around to it.

Sometimes people act like being a Christian is an unpleasant experience that they will do when they get a round tuit.  It is not.  Christians aren’t perfect, they just have more fun being imperfect and imperfectly trying to improve!  Anyway, here is the Gospel according to Saint Matthew:

T

HE kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

We are oft fortunate to get copies of Bishop Jerry’s sermon notes.  Today is one of those Sundays.  Today’s sermon starts off with the collect, and like always, it will give you a lot to consider in your heart.

Sermon Notes

Septuagesima

12 February 2017, Anno Domini (in the Year of Our Lord)

The Sunday called Septuagesima, or the

third Sunday before Lent.

The Collect.

O

 LORD, we beseech thee favourably to hear the prayers of thy people; that we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

This Collect prepares our hearts for Grace and disavows any personal merit we may consider that we have. First, we pray that our prayer, offered out of a contrite heart, may be heard by the Lord. Secondly, our punishments regardless the severity are all deserved for we have all come short of the righteousness of God. Thirdly, not claiming any righteousness now on our own behalf, but that righteousness of Jesus Christ, we ask only for His mercy and His Glory.

1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: 2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

     3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. 10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

     13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.  (Matthew 5:1-16)

The multitudes always flocked to Christ but only for their own benefit. “And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him.” That is true today as well. The multitudes that flock to churches on Sunday are not truly seeking Christ, but social, political and financial advantage, or rather to satisfy a curiosity. Those who come truly seeking Him are the smaller remnant of the people – the true disciples.

             Jesus, when wearied, often went up to the mountain. It is a place where the world is less and heaven is nearer. There He may find solitude.

 “…when he was set” Unlike many moderns who love to make a show of jumping about in the pulpit, Jesus often sat down (as one having authority) to preach and teach. Wild gesticulations will not nurture faith, but Jesus spoke in calm and even words.

The multitudes will come readily on easy terrain, but they are less likely to go so far as to climb a mountain.

We see now a division between the reward of those who are blessed (and who they are) and the nature of those who are truly blessed of the Lord.

 “And he opened his mouth, and taught them,” In the military we would call this an Alert Order – Christ is about to speak words of surpassing importance:

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed arethe meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

There is one common thread running through all of the Blessed – they are humble and lacking undue pride. If they have pride, it is in Christ and not themselves.

11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.  Here we have a perfect example of the kind of persecution that takes place from the world, and often regrettably, the people of the Church itself. The prophets of old times were not persecuted by the world as much as by the rulers of Israel. The same is true today. If you question their extravagant spending plans, you will find yourself outside the gate, beaten and tortured by the tongues of men.

Who are the blessed of God in the final equation? Have you ever heard an honest and good man or woman described in this way: “That man is the salt of the earth!”?

 “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” What is the nature of salt and who made salt?

  •

  • All things were made by God. He made salt for our good. What are some benefits of salt?

  • Makes food taste better. The Christian makes those about him enjoy his company.

  • Preserves meats and vegetables so they can be stored for long periods. The witness of a Christian nation will preserve it in liberty and safety for long periods.

  • Valuable – salt was used to pay Roman soldiers at the time of Christ. The Roman name for salt is salarius – this is the origin of our term ‘salary.’ Salt necessary for life.

  • Salt is not found every place. It must be mined at hard labor and then transported to the source of need. God’s Word must be studied (mined) and transported to the source of need – a perishing world.

  • Salt creates thirst just as salty popcorn in a theater (to entice us to buy soft drinks). The Christian example of the Church should make people thirsty to come and know of our joy.

  • Salt is stored in shakers. If it is kept to long without being shaken, it will harden and not able to be used on food. The Christian is the same way. If we stay apart from the lives of others, or huddle in little cliques in church, we will get hardened and of no benefit to our fellow man.

  • Salt is essential to maintain life.

  • Salt is a Compound comprised of two atoms – which are they? Remember your junior high chemistry class? NaCl

    • Na = Sodium, a soft, yellowish, poisonous metal never found in pure form in nature. It will always be combined with some other element such as carbon, sulphur, or hydrogen.

    • CL = Chlorine, is an odorless, colorless gas which cannot be seen, but is so deadly that it was the first chemical used in chemical warfare in WWI. It kills without the victim being aware of its presence. The lost sinner dies not being aware of the presence of God.

    • But when these two poisons are combined, they create a compound essential for life!

    • If we allow sodium to represent man (a soft yellow medal) we see that man is lost in his natural state, always joined to the elements of the world.

    • If we allow chlorine to represent God as an invisible Spirit, we find that He is deadly to man if man is not joined to Him as in the case of NaCl. But when combined, the result is something essential for life.

  • If we place salt in a bag on the ground and leave it alone for a long while, it will begin to separate from the Chlorine and join with other elements of the world. How like a Christian who is overly close to the things of the world.

  • If we view common table salt under a microscope, we will find that the invisible chlorine gas, and soft yellow metal have formed perfect cubes of white. These cubes maintain a structural integrity that maintains their form even when beaten into small pieces. Should not the Christian maintain his integrity and form as well when subjected to persecution?

  •

We are, if we are committed to Christ, the salt of the earth.

Now let us turn to light. What is light?

Nobody knows, not even our NASA scientists.

Science can only describe the behavior and characteristics of Light, but cannot define exactly what Light is.

Light is invisible. Strange to you? You can only see light in the manner in which it reveals reality to us. We can see each other today because light has revealed our visage to each other. God is like Light – we cannot see Him, but we can see the Truth and Promise He has revealed to us. We know Him too because we know His Son, Jesus.

According to Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity, there is only one absolute known to man – the speed of Light. Christ tells us that He is the Light of the World! He is absolute and His Truth is unassailable!

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

The Sun is our great physical light without which there could be no life on earth. Christ, to us, is like the Sun. We must be blessed by His warm, life-giving rays daily.

If there is a lunar eclipse, we have allowed some physical object to come between us and our Sun of Righteousness. But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.  (Mal 4:2)

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. (John 8:12)

             Wait! Jesus says that WE are the Light of the World, and here He says HE is the Light of the World. How may we reconcile these seemingly conflicting statements?

Have you ever basked in the light of the moon on a warm summer evening? The moon is the brightest light in the sky at night, but it does not own its light, it borrows it from the Sun and reflects it down to us. We, too, are the only light is a darkened night of the world, but our light, too, is borrowed and reflected. We get our Light from the Sun of Righteousness and it is not ours – but His.

A hidden light is not light at all. We must be openly burning for Christ. If we are bright lights for Christ, our lights shall be seen at great distances across the Wilderness of the World. Are you a shining light for Christ, or is your light darkened?

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion

Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

 Consider these words from the Collect:

… we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness …

In the Collect, we ask God who knows we should be “…justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour …”  To get into heaven we need to be accounted as perfect.  Yet, we cannot be “cured” of sin nor “improved” to perfection. So how do we solve this irregularity? We are imperfect creatures with free will, the most confounding combination ever created for salvation.  We know we ourselves cannot solve our dilemma.  Who can?  There is a solution for us!  Consider the words of John Newton near the end of his life, “Although my memory’s fading, I remember two things very clearly: I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior!” The answer lies in the latter part of Newton’s quote. Our sins are justly punished by eternal damnation, yet there is hope in our Lord.

What Paul speaks of in his Epistle is the great reward we receive for holding steady to the course God has set for us. For eternal salvation is the delivery promised to each of us by Jesus.  This is the great reward for the race we run daily here on Earth. Make no mistake, like a marathon, this run requires frequent training in the Scriptures and acting upon the concepts in Scriptures. And like marathon runners, we receive a wonderful prize.  However, it is for a more valuable prize than any monetary or asset gift that one could receive here on Earth The prize is for the promise of an eternal, unending life, to be spent with our Lord and Savior Jesus. It is for the promise of a world unaffected by the tarnish of sin, unblackened by the sinful deeds of imperfect beings. It is an unshadowed world.  It shall be true happiness at last, to meet with our beloved family, our Christian heavenly family, friends and beloved pets.

Eternal salvation is a far more valuable prize than anything we could possibly acquire here on Earth.  It is in fact a priceless treasure, truly priceless, except for the death of our Saviour and resurrection. That is the only price involved with our eternal freedom.  As the saying goes, there is no free lunch. Eternal life does not come to us without cost. The cost was Jesus’ one time sacrifice for all time for all mankind. We have to keep this foremost in our thoughts as we continue to run the race set before us!  We need to bear in mind the reward for our race run is not one we have earned, but is a gift freely given by God’s grace, by His Love for us, He sent His Son to purchase eternal life for us by his death and resurrection.  Keep the eyes on the prize, as it were!  As my grandfather was fond of saying, “Keep your eye on the doughnut, not the hole.”  That means keeping the important things in sight at all times, excluding the unimportant.

Particularly when things get hard, we must keep our end goal fixed firmly in our mind’s eye in order to stay on the path. In order to stay focused on the path, we must always remember the end, the arrival in Heaven will outweigh all of the sacrifices, blood, sweat and tears we shed in this life. Paul assures us our efforts will give us a reward greater than even our pitiful minds can imagine, if we but stay the course.

Our eyes should be focused on the finish line, not our “competition.”  The only thing which counts is that we each cross the finish line.  Does the competition matter in the scheme of things? After all, each person needs only be concerned with doing God’s will and his eternal destination, not others destinations. For only you have an input in which area you will go. Not a final input, but an input none the less.

So how do we run the race?

With our eyes focused tightly on the finish line, not on those around us, wondering are they doing better than we are?  That is not a useful question.

The useful question is, “Am I doing the best I can?” And, remember this is a Team Effort. We have to want to win, and in order to win the race set before us; we have to perform actions. We need to act upon the Word of Scripture, the message, which is to promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ and preach it to all nations, as in the Great Commission. But we must first start with our neighbors and work our way outward. It must be a team effort, we cannot all do it alone.  It is not as the Army motto says “An Army of One”, but the Church is an “Army of Many.” Each person in God’s army has a specific talent and task assigned to them to complete their assigned mission here on Earth. We need support along the way, especially when things get tough, we need our Christian buddies to give us moral support and encouragement from the Word.   We want the Christian Team to win.  If an outsider joins, they join the team fully from then on.  We need to give each team member all the help we can.  A deathbed[1] conversion gains the same prize in the end as a life long Christian.  The life long Christian will have had the more rewarding life here on earth, but eternity is a long time after that. So, with that in mind, we must DO our best and not just say it, and we do that by acting upon the Word, not just reading it, but acting.

We are all so far from perfect that Holier than Thou is pretty damning praise.  Don’t even go there.  The best you can really do is not to be as evil as another, even that is pretty doubtful. But, we can do our best for our Lord and that is what really matters.

The Gospel for today, the very important parable of the vineyard, also gives us very good advice on the conduct of our daily lives and contains a crucial key to happiness.  There is the lesson that the deathbed conversion gains the same prize of eternal life as the lifelong follower, but there is a lot more in it for every day life. That a person that comes to Christ late in life, receives the same eternal benefits as a person who followed Christ from the age of reason.

It is a fine lesson in “buyer’s remorse” or coveting of jobs or similar concepts.  If you got a good deal, it does not change because someone else got a “better” deal.  Take what you got, go forth and be happy.  Don’t complain because somebody else got the same deal as you did sooner. Other meanings abound.  For a very direct application, what this means is “cradle” Christians are no more likely to go to heaven than this morning’s convert.  They just get to enjoy the Christian experience longer.  So, let us not begrudge those who are newly converted, but let us rejoice that they have been saved! As Christ said, we should rejoice that one sinner has repented of his ways!  One note, if you wait until the last minute to join the gang, your time here might end before you get around to it.   So, don’t wait until tomorrow to act, do it today while you still have time!

Sometimes people act like being a Christian is an unpleasant experience that they will do when they get a round TUIT.  It is not.  Christians aren’t perfect, they just have more fun being imperfect and imperfectly trying to improve!

Christ gave us eternal life.  But, we have to accept it.  Once you accept it, start living as if you will live forever.  You will and you will have to live with your actions for ever!  So, Act early and Act often!

There is but one way to heaven.

That easy to find, easy to follow, easy to hike path does not lead to the summit where eternal life in the real world awaits.  Open your heart to the Holy Ghost, use His Power to follow our Lord to God who awaits in heaven.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Septuagesima

Redeemed of the Lord

12 February 2017, Anno Domini

Psalm 1 and 125 • Ezekiel 3:4-11 • Matthew 5:1-16

The Sunday called Septuagesima, or the

third Sunday before Lent.

The Collect.

O

 LORD, we beseech thee favourably to hear the prayers of thy people; that we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

Why do bad things happen to “good” people?  How can God allow the evil to prevail in this world, horrible things done to women and children, to innocents in all nations?

First off, this question, coming from the father of lies, has confounded many a believer. They don’t seem to know why this is all happening.  Every so often, especially after a particularly heinous crime or event, the question comes forth, mostly from the secular press.

So why does God seem to allow evil to befall what the world considers “good” people?

 “…. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God…” Romans 3:23.

Now the good news is found in the next couple of verses of this Thirde Chapter of Paul’s letter to the Romans.

24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

If you continue this study of the sin nature of mankind, you will see that we inherited it by way of the First Adam, he introduced sin/evil into a perfect world that God had created at the beginning.   You ask why?   From our view point, God gives us the choice to flee from good or to follow Him through the perfect Sacrifice, His only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

Now we have to understand this conundrum, the secular world sees good as something defined by the construct of a secular world.  If you don’t hurt others while you pursue your way, if you do not harm the earth in this pursuit, if you do not harm any animals either, you get the idea.  It is a man-centered concept of the universe and visible world.  In other words, a man centered, man controlled world.  This is what drives the global climate change argument, it is all because of man’s over use of resources and a lack of understanding of “science”.   That argument is for another time.   Suffice it to say, man has had a problem with his Creator since the beginning. Because he sinned against the Perfect and Holy God, he has been finding a way to get around that inconvenient truth, he must be reconciled to his Creator, before anything will change.

Now mind you, just becoming a believer, a follower of Christ, does not take away the evil that is in this fallen world.  “The rain falls on the just and the unjust.”

Let us go back to the original theme, why do bad things happen to good people.  As believers, we must understand no one is good in their own right.  Once we have established that fact, based on Biblical evidence, now we can answer the question.  It isn’t a good world, it is a fallen world, many things are broken, corrupt, evil in their own right, so we must understand and expect that these things can and will happen.  That being things of evil to all of God’s creations.

Ok, so how do we deal with this fact?    Each one of our readings today address this in a slightly different way.  In the two psalms we see that one who walks with God will not be judged by those who are not with God.  We who trust in the Lord, will not be moved.

  What is our responsibility to the world?  As we read in the passage from Ezekiel, it is to spread the word of Truth to those who most desperately need it.  Those who’s hearts and minds are as hard as flint. Those who have turned away from God and become rebellious.  And yet, as Jonah was compelled to do, we are to take the hope that we have because we believe in a Risen Savior, to those who are perishing.   We are to do this even if they do not listen.  Notice the eleventh verse of this passage: “…And go, get thee to them of the captivity, unto the children of thy people, and speak unto them, and tell them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear.”

And now, just in case we don’t understand our duty, Jesus preaches the most famous sermon in the New Testament in which he ends with the following admonition:

 “…Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

We are to rejoice and be glad when we are rejected, reviled, persecuted, and unjustly accused of false things.  We do this because those who came before us suffered the same thing, and yet they persisted so that one day we too would be able to understand and accept the greatest gift, the Salvation of the Lord.

And in conclusion to this whole message, we must understand who we are.  We are salt.  We are light. We are the hope for the nations that they are not getting from their false ways.  Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life.  No one comes to the Father bus by Him.

Beloved, do you believe this?   Then let us go forth and spread the savory salt and shine the light before mankind to they can turn from their wickedness, repent and be Saved.

Let us pray:

O

 GOD the Father, Creator of heaven and earth;

            Have mercy upon us.

O God the Son, Redeemer of the world;

Have mercy upon us.

O God the Holy Ghost, Sanctifier of the faithful;

Have mercy upon us.

O holy, blessed, and glorious Trinity, one God;

 Have mercy upon us.

R

EMEMBER not, Lord, our offences, nor the offences of our forefathers; neither take thou vengeance of our sins: Spare us, good Lord, spare thy people, whom thou hast redeemed with thy most precious blood, and be not angry with us for ever.

Spare us, good Lord.

F

ROM all evil and mischief; from sin; from the crafts and assaults of the devil; from thy wrath, and from everlasting damnation,

Good Lord, deliver us.

From all blindness of heart; from pride, vainglory, and hypocrisy; from envy, hatred, and malice, and all uncharitableness,

Good Lord, deliver us.

From all inordinate and sinful affections; and from all the deceits of the world, the flesh, and the devil,

Good Lord, deliver us.

From lightning and tempest; from earthquake, fire, and flood; from plague, pestilence, and famine; from battle and murder, and from sudden death,

Good Lord, deliver us.

From all sedition, privy conspiracy, and rebellion; from all false doctrine, heresy, and schism; from hardness of heart, and contempt of thy Word and Commandment,

Good Lord, deliver us.

By the mystery of thy holy Incarnation; by thy holy Nativity and Circumcision; by thy Baptism, Fasting, and Temptation,

Good Lord, deliver us.

By thine Agony and Bloody Sweat; by thy Cross and Passion; by thy precious Death and Burial; by thy glorious Resurrection and Ascension, and by the Coming of the Holy Ghost,

Good Lord, deliver us.

In all time of our tribulation; in all time of our prosperity; in the hour of death, and in the day of judgment,

Good Lord, deliver us.

W

E humbly beseech thee, O Father, mercifully to look upon our infirmities; and, for the glory of thy Name, turn from us all those evils that we most justly have deserved; and grant, that in all our troubles we may put our whole trust and confidence in thy mercy, and evermore serve thee in holiness and pureness of living, to thy honour and glory; through our only Mediator and Advocate, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

The Sunday called Septuagesima, or the

third Sunday before Lent

Isaiah 5:1-7

N

ow will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:  2 And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.  3 And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.  4 What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?  5 And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:  6 And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.  7 For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

In Isaiah the LORD made known to the prophet his intention to punish the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem for their rebellion and rejection of him when he said, Now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down (v.5). Consider also the words of the prophet Ezekiel, Then he said unto me, Has thou seen this, O son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? for they have filled the land with violence, and have returned to provoke me to anger: and, lo, they put the branch to their nose. Therefore will I also deal in fury: mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: and though they cry in mine ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them (8:17-18). When God sets matters in his word as we have seen in the aforementioned passages, it is only a matter of time before he carries them out.

God has never accepted sin and wickedness and has never hedged those who did. Examine his message to the people of Judah and Jerusalem via the prophet Jeremiah when he questioned, Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not; and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations (7:10)? Hear also his judgment: And now because ye have done all these works, saith the LORD, and I spake to you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not (7:13)... I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim (7:15).

Some years later, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon besieged the city and did indeed cart the bulk of the people away into captivity on account of their unfaithfulness to God. Witness II Chronicles 36:15-16 which described that fateful occasion: And LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy. When God has had enough of bad behavior, he will act to punish and will not relent.

The typical response of modernists and progressives might be styled in this fashion: “Those are just the words of the angry God of the Old Testament, and not the loving and caring God of the New. Surely those passages do not apply to us today. We are expected to be tolerant, open, and accepting without judgment, you know, for that is what Jesus would want us to be.”

Oh? Since when did the nature of God change between testaments? How did they get past the words of the prophet Malachi, For I am the LORD, I change not(3:6)? Or as St. Paul noted in the book of Hebrews, Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever (13:8). God has been and ever will be the same God with the same unchanging message.

And like the modernists of our day, the theology of the Israelites had become tainted by paganism. Just a cursory examination history raises an interesting question: Why is it that all of the pagan deities from across the globe and across the ages share an eerie similarity? The apostle Paul provided us the answer when he observed, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God, and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils (I Corinthians 10:20). We cannot keep the commandments of God, in particular, I am the LORD thy God… Thou shalt have no other gods before me (Exodus 20:2-3), if we are involved in worshiping other things regardless of what they might be. We must remember that Satan has been encouraging mankind to violate God’s word and commandment since the beginning. His principal weapon has always been deception and through such he has whitewashed sin and given it an appeal which excites our flesh. He makes, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life appear to be good and acceptable by twisting the morals and ethics of human beings so that good becomes evil, and evil becomes good (Isaiah 5:20).

Thus it follows that when a people or a country turns from God, he will, as the prophet Isaiah noted, take away [their] hedge… and break down the wall thereof, and [they] shall be trodden down (5:7). Consider the following passages:

Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out… (Job 18:5). God has made it plain that he will put the dark light of every wicked soul in a place where it will never see his true light again (St. Matthew 25:30). When a people fall away from the prohibitions found in Scripture, they will draw ever closer to that day when their national existence will be extinguished.

…God is angry with the wicked every day (Psalm 7:11). God has no love for sin and no toleration of it. Those who have been redeemed know that God is love; but they also know that God is just and holy. He cannot go against his nature, and his nature is opposed to sin. If a people— and by extension a country— do not forsake their evil ways, then a righteous and holy God will reveal his wrath against them and their land much as he did to Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:24-25).

…the seed of the wicked shall be cut off (Psalm 37:28). God will not spare even the descendants of those who have sinned, if they will not turn from the wicked ways of their fathers. With the removal of God’s hedge of protection, any cataclysm, any pandemic, any war could spell the end for a nation or country that had embraced evil ways and practices, as well as mark the end for many souls.

…the desire of the wicked shall perish (Psalm 112:10). God has called for a day of wrath and judgment upon those who love their sins and who would cling to them rather than turn unto his Messiah and repent. And any country whose people are for the most part mired in wickedness and degradation; who have set into law and observance those things which he has specifically identified as being abominable, will indeed fall under his wrath.

…the name of the wicked shall rot (Proverbs 10:7). There is no state of nature into which evildoers will ultimately reach that is more foul than that of the grave. For it is there that their human form will waste away and will not be restored. But such is not the end of the matter. The name of the wicked shall also decay and be as refuse fit only to be cast out. Any person or country which does not honor and serve the God of heaven and earth, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, will have their names blotted out of his book of life. And because they were deemed foul to God, just the very mention of that land’s name will cause all who hear it to become disgusted. What a despicable end that would be for such a people.

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD(Proverbs 15:8). Those who claim to be Christians and attempt worship God without being obedient to his expressed will as found within the Holy Bible will one day find that their offerings and prayers were but a waste of time, and their future abode meet for their lack of faith. The false doctrine of ecumenism with its all-inclusive religion does not have any standing with God because it goes against all that God has stated in his word written.

A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it... (St. Matthew 16:4). There is no sign or demonstration from God that will change the mind of unregenerate except they see him coming in the clouds with power and great glory. In that moment, every atheist, every agnostic, every adulterer, every murderer, every worker of iniquity shall see before them the Lord of Glory whom they had rejected. And after their judgment before the Great White Throne they will be cast into the burning cauldron of the lake of fire that will be their eternal abode for rejecting his prescriptions for living.

Judgment is coming. It is as sure and certain as this breath you are taking, and this moment you are living. God will have his word and commandment judge us if we will not embrace Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord. For it was Christ who came to free us from sin and death so that we will not have to face an eternity of separation from all that is good and holy. The Bible is God’s record of what he expects and we should be about trying to please him and not simply satisfying ourselves contrary his expressed will. There is only one way, one truth and one life which can be found in only one name which is above every name, even Jesus Christ. In that light, I implore each of you to commit yourselves to Christ. Accept the free gift of salvation in his name and turn away from the wicked ways of this world so that you might be made fit for the life of the world to come. Make that  choice while you still can. Remember, tomorrow is promised to no one so choose now to serve him who died that you might live forever within the hedge of his eternal kingdom.

Let us pray,

H

oly Father, who has given us the light of truth within the pages of Scripture; give us hearts and minds agreeable to thy word; and help us to read and inwardly digest the same; for this we ask in the name of him who is our only Redeemer and Advocate, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

What is Septuagesima?

Septuagesima Sunday is the name given to the third Sunday before Lent. The term is sometimes applied to the period of the liturgical year which begins on this day and lasts through Shrove Tuesday (with the following day being Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins). This period is also known as the Pre-Lenten season or Shrovetide. The next two Sundays are labelled Sexagesima and Quinquagesima, the latter sometimes also called Shrove Sunday. The earliest Septuagesima Sunday can occur is January 18 (Easter falling on March 22 in nonleap year) and the latest is February 22 (Easter falling on April 25 in leap year).

Septuagesima comes from the Latin word for “seventieth,” with Sexagesima and Quinquagesima equalling “sixtieth” and “fiftieth” respectively. They are patterned after the Latin word for the season of Lent, Quadragesima, which means “fortieth” because Lent is forty days long (not counting the Sundays, which are all considered little Easters).  Because a week is only seven days long, not ten, and since even then only six of those days might be counted if the pattern of Quadragesima is followed, Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima, don’t literally correspond to the periods of time they imply. It is interesting, however, that just about 70 days (68 actually) is the minimum number of days between the octave day of the Epiphany on January 14 and Easter, implying that a season just about 70 days long can always fit between the two.

The 17-day period beginning on Septuagesima Sunday was intended to be observed as a preparation for the season of Lent, which is itself a period of spiritual preparation (for Easter). In many countries, however, Septuagesima Sunday still marks the start of the carnival season, culminating on Shrove Tuesday, more commonly known as Mardi Gras. The Gospel reading for Septuagesima week is the parable of the Workers in the Vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16).

[1]Of course, you must consider that overshooting a deathbed conversion will result in no conversion, thus no eternal life.  Convert earlier than needed rather than later than needed.  My dad talks of a bombing range in England, Cowden, on the edge of a cliff.  If you dropped short, you got a score.  If you dropped long, you missed the whole country.  Same idea here.
