Sunday Report

Today was Septuagesima, the Third Sunday before Lent. Want to know more about Septuagesima? There is a nice explanation at the end of the report.

On Point
Someone asked, where do the quotes come from? The answer is from the people who uttered them. But, how did you find them? Oh, that. Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places but overall mostly from Bryan. He always has a few great ones to share. On to the On Point quotes –

State of the Union
When small men cast long shadows, then it is very late in the day.
The AntiYuppie

Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
Luke 6:26

The Holy Bible is our compass rose at which we fine-tune our consciences by reading, study, prayer, and application. Depending on God’s True North to see us through the shoals and billows of life will bring us always, to safe harbor and rest.

There is just one political party, and it is a government party. Any belief that there is any significant difference between Democrats and Republicans is pure fantasy. All supposed differences are merely Kabuki theater designed to keep the people distracted from the behind-the-scenes machinations of the elites. This is aided and abetted by a compliant mainstream media, which functions as a propaganda arm of the government and its parties.

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister or our Deacon Striker.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off. Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 118-120, with the Collect first:

The Sunday called Septuagesima, or the
third Sunday before Lent.

The Collect.

O
LORD, we beseech thee favourably to hear the prayers of thy people; that we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Epistle for today came from the Ninth Chapter of the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians beginning at the Twenty-Fourth Verse. Paul tells us that we must strive for mastery over ourselves so that we can gain the crown of eternal life offered us at great cost by our Lord Jesus Christ. We must each do our own personal best to control our own actions and behavior so we can follow God’s Plan for each of us. We must be bold and certain in our actions.

K
NOW ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: but I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection; lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

The Holy Gospel for today came from the Twentieth Chapter of the Gospel of Saint Matthew beginning at the First Verse. Often quoted, this is the very important parable of the vineyard. While it appears to be principally directed towards Christians wanting to be “first” in importance and the like, it has a more direct meaning. It is a fine lesson in “buyer’s remorse” or coveting of jobs or similar concepts. If you got a good deal, it does not change because someone else got a “better” deal. Take what you got, go forth and be happy. Other meanings abound. For a very direct application, what this means is “cradle” Christians are no more likely to go to heaven than this morning’s convert. They just get to enjoy the Christian experience longer. One note, if you wait until the last minute to join the gang, your time here might end before you get around to it.

Sometimes people act like being a Christian is an unpleasant experience that they will do when they get a round tuit. It is not. Christians aren’t perfect, they just have more fun being imperfect and imperfectly trying to improve! Anyway, here is the Gospel according to Saint Matthew:

T
HE kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action
Church of the Faithful Centurion, Descanso, California
Today’s sermon ties together the propers, that is to say the prayer and readings for this week. Consider these words from the Collect:

… we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness …

In the Collect, we ask God who knows we should be “…justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour …” To get into heaven we need to be accounted as perfect. Yet, we cannot be “cured” of sin nor “improved” to perfection. So how do we solve this irregularity? We are imperfect creatures with free will, the most confounding combination ever created for salvation. We know we ourselves cannot solve our dilemma. Who can? There is a solution for us! Consider the words of John Newton near the end of his life, “Although my memory’s fading, I remember two things very clearly: I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior!” The answer lies in the latter part of Newton’s quote. Our sins are justly punished by eternal damnation, yet there is hope in our Lord.

What Paul speaks of in his Epistle is the great reward we receive for holding steady to the course God has set for us. For eternal salvation is the delivery promised to each of us by Jesus. This is the great reward for the race we run daily here on Earth. Make no mistake, like a marathon, this run requires frequent training in the Scriptures and acting upon the concepts in Scriptures. And like marathon runners, we receive a wonderful prize. However, it is a prize that has value beyond anything on Earth. The prize is for the promise of an eternal, unending life, to be spent with our Lord and Savior Jesus. It is for the promise of a world unaffected by the tarnish of sin, unblackened by the sinful deeds of imperfect beings. It is an unshadowed world. It shall be true happiness at last, to meet with our beloved family, our Christian heavenly family, friends and beloved pets.

Eternal salvation is a far more valuable prize than anything we could possibly acquire here on Earth. It is in fact a priceless treasure, truly priceless, except for the death of our Saviour and resurrection. That is the only price involved with our eternal freedom. As the saying goes, there is no free lunch. Eternal life does not come to us without cost. The cost was Jesus’ one time sacrifice for all time for all mankind. Keep the eyes on the prize, as it were! And realize that that prize does not come free. We have to run the race set before us and follow Jesus in order to receive our prize of eternal life. We have to be constantly focusing on this fact.

When times get really hard, and it is tempting to give up sometimes; that is when we must redouble our efforts and focus our end goal, remaining on the path towards Heaven.. In order to stay focused on the path, we must always remember the end, the arrival in Heaven will outweigh all of the sacrifices, blood, sweat and tears we shed in this life. If we but stay the course, our time after this will be something wonderful.

Our eyes should be focused on the finish line, not our “competition.” The only thing which counts is that we each cross the finish line. It does not matter who our competition is, as we are not competing with anyone for our destination. We only have to concern ourselves with God’s will and focusing on getting ourselves towards the right destination. For only you have an input in which area you will go. Not the final input, but an input none the less.

So how do we run the race?

With our eyes focused tightly on the finish line, not on those around us, wondering are they doing better than we are? That is not a useful question.

The useful question is, “Am I doing the best I can?” And we have to answer that question; if we are not doing our best, then we need to change it. And, remember this is a Team Effort. We have to want to win, and in order to win the race set before us; we have to perform actions. We need to act upon the Word of Scripture, the message, which is to promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ and preach it to all nations as Christ commanded. We must first start with our neighbors and work our way outward. It must be a team effort, we cannot all do it alone. Each person in God’s Army has a specific talent and task assigned to them to complete their assigned mission here on Earth. We need support along the way, especially when things get tough, we need our Christian buddies to give us moral support and encouragement from the Word. We want the Christian Team to win. We need to give each team member all the help we can. And we need to be welcoming to each outsider who join the team, and treat them like the lifelong members of the Team. So, with that in mind, we must DO our best and not just say it, and we do that by acting upon the Word, not just reading it, but acting.

We are all so far from perfect that Holier than Thou is pretty damning praise. Don’t even go there. The best you can really do is not to be as evil as another, even that is pretty doubtful. But, we can do our best for our Lord and that is what really matters.

The Gospel for today, the very important parable of the vineyard, also gives us very good advice on the conduct of our daily lives and contains a crucial key to happiness. There is the lesson that the deathbed conversion gains the same prize of eternal life as the lifelong follower, but there is a lot more in it for everyday life. A person who comes to Christ late in life receives the same eternal benefits as a person who followed Christ from the age of reason.

It is a fine lesson in “buyer’s remorse” or coveting of jobs or similar concepts. If you got a good deal, it does not change because someone else got a “better” deal. Take what you got, go forth and be happy. Don’t complain because somebody else got the same deal as you did sooner. One meaning of this parable is that “cradle” Christians are no more likely to go to heaven than this morning’s convert. They just get to enjoy the Christian experience longer. However, you should not wait until the last minute to join the gang, your time here might end before you get around to it. So, don’t wait until tomorrow to act, do it today while you still have time!

Sometimes people act like being a Christian is an unpleasant experience that they will do when they get a round TUIT. It is not. Christians aren’t perfect, they just have more fun being imperfect and imperfectly trying to improve!

Christ gave us eternal life. But, we have to accept it. Once you accept it, start living as if you will live forever. You will and you will have to live with your actions forever! So, Act early and Act often!

There is but one way to heaven.

That easy to find, easy to follow, easy to hike path does not lead to the summit where eternal life in the real world awaits. Open your heart to the Holy Ghost, use His Power to follow our Lord to God who awaits in heaven.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail. The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow. The time has come, indeed. How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Septuagesima
Chariots and Horses will Fail
28 January 2018, Anno Domini
Psalm 20 • Joshua 1:1-9 • 2 Timothy 2:1-13

The Sunday called Septuagesima, or the
third Sunday before Lent.

The Collect.

O
LORD, we beseech thee favourably to hear the prayers of thy people; that we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

This Sunday begins the countdown to Easter. We are 70 days, not counting Sundays, from Easter Sunday. As we prepare to start the season of Lent there are several themes in today’s scripture.

1. Salvation
2. Faithfulness and Courage
3. Reliance on God

In the psalter we read of the Lord God of Jacob sending his help and strength to defend his own.

We should only trust in the Lord, not the strength of men. Chariots and horses will fail, but only the Lord will save.

Really a simple message. Let us examine this message in detail.

Salvation
Psalm 20:6 Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. (2 Tim 2:10b). …that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: In each example verse we read of God’s salvation of man. He saves him who He calls, elects. (2 Tim 2:10) Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes. Notice the same theme in the sixth verse of Psalm 20, saveth his anointed. And a further benefit bestowed upon those who are saved, the salvation is eternal as we read in the second part of 2 Timothy 2:10. I would like you to reflect on how the Word of God will bring to light certain truths and that this is done over a millennium stretching from the Garden to the Garden Tomb. The primary message is God’s love toward us, those whom He has chosen, He saves.

Faith and Courage
Here is the history of Israel’s passing into the land of Canaan, conquering and dividing it, under the command of Joshua, and their history until his death. The power and truth of God in fulfilling his promises to Israel, and in executing his justly threatened vengeance on the Canaanites, are wonderfully displayed. This should teach us to regard the tremendous curses denounced in the word of God against impenitent sinners, and to seek refuge in Christ Jesus. The Lord appoints Joshua to succeed Moses. (1-4) God promises to assist Joshua. (5-9) Preparation to pass over Jordan. (10-15) The people promise to obey Joshua. (16-18)1-4 Joshua had attended upon Moses. He who was called to honour, had been long used to business. Our Lord Jesus took upon him the form of a servant. Joshua was trained up under command. Those are fittest to rule, who have learned to obey. The removal of useful men should quicken survivors to be the more diligent in doing good. Arise, go over Jordan. At this place and at this time the banks were overflowed. Joshua had no bridge or boats, and yet he must believe that God, having ordered the people over, would open a way.

5-9 Joshua is to make the law of God his rule. He is charged to meditate therein day and night, that he might understand it. Whatever affairs of this world we have to mind, we must not neglect the one thing needful. All his orders to the people, and his judgments, must be according to the law of God. Joshua must himself be under command; no man’s dignity or dominion sets him above the law of God. He is to encourage himself with the promise and presence of God. Let not the sense of thine own infirmities dishearten thee; God is all-sufficient. I have commanded, called, and commissioned thee to do it, and will be sure to bear thee out in it. When we are in the way of duty, we have reason to be strong and very bold. Our Lord Jesus, as Joshua here, was borne up under his sufferings by a regard to the will of God, and the commandment from his Father.

Reliance on God, not man, for our ultimate defense and salvation
This psalm is a prayer for the kings of Israel, but with relation to Christ.

Even the greatest of men may be much in trouble. Neither the crown on the king’s head, nor the grace in his heart, would make him free from trouble. Even the greatest of men must be much in prayer. Let none expect benefit by the prayers of the church, or their friends, who are capable of praying for themselves, yet neglect it. Pray that God would protect his person, and preserve his life. That God would enable him to go on in his undertakings for the public good. We may know that God accepts our spiritual sacrifices, if by his Spirit he kindles in our souls a holy fire of piety and love to God. Also, that the Lord would crown his enterprises with success. Our first step to victory in spiritual warfare is to trust only in the mercy and grace of God; all who trust in themselves will soon be cast down. Believers triumph in God, and his revelation of himself to them, by which they distinguish themselves from those that live without God in the world. Those who make God and his name their praise, may make God and his name their trust. This was the case when the pride and power of Jewish unbelief, and pagan idolatry, fell before the sermons and lives of the humble believers in Jesus. This is the case in every conflict with our spiritual enemies, when we engage them in the name, the spirit, and the power of Christ; and this will be the case at the last day, when the world, with the prince of it, shall be brought down and fall; but believers, risen-from the dead, through the resurrection of the Lord, shall stand, and sing his praises in heaven. In Christ’s salvation let us rejoice; and set up our banners in the name of the Lord our God, assured that by the saving strength of his right hand we shall be conquerors over every enemy. Notes from Matthew Henry

In our final passage for today, the second letter to Timothy, Paul admonishes Timothy to be strong. Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, then he lays out the reason to seek this strength. It is because of Jesus and of Paul’s sound reputation among many witnesses. Then notice the next step, Timothy was to teach others this same commitment, to undergo the hardening that comes from enduring much. Now, talk about laser focus: as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. Because, beloved, we are in a war. The war of our very spiritual lives. The prince of the power of the air is seeking to devour us, he is seeking to neutralize us, keep us from being effective soldiers of Christ.

Paul concludes his charge to Timothy, and in a sense us, this following concept:

…Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. 8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:…” Paul comes back to the fact that Jesus is the Messiah, by his very heritage AND that being Messiah, Jesus will save us. He conquered death and the grave, he rose again on that glorious Easter Day, he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

We too must abide faithfully in Him. May Jesus be your Rock, your Strength, your Salvation.

Let us pray:

O
GRACIOUS heavenly Father, since it is of thy mercy, that another day is added to our lives; We here dedicate both our souls and our bodies to thee and thy service, in a sober, righteous, and godly life: in which resolution, do thou, O merciful God, confirm and strengthen us; that, as we grow in age, we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

O
GOD, the King eternal, who dividest the day from the darkness, and turnest the shadow of death into the morning; Drive far off from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep thy law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that having done thy will with cheerfulness while it was day, we may, when the night cometh, rejoice to give thee thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

T
HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon
We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon. If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth. This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Septuagesima

In today’s Gospel, our Lord presented a parable of a vineyard owner who went out to hire laborers. Some he called in the morning, some at mid-day and some in the afternoon. All agreed to work for a penny, or a denarius. For us, a penny has minimal value, while a denarius contained more than a 1/10th an ounce of silver. In ancient times, it was considered to be a day’s wage. O that our penny was worth so much.

Notice that every man hired got the same wage which might be regarded by some as unfair to those who had borne the heat of the day as opposed to those who had been hired later. Leaving aside the obvious issues of property rights and free association of labor, what this parable presents to us is God’s concept of salvation. Whether one comes to Christ early in life, in mid-life, or at its end, the amount and nature of salvation remains constant.

Those who would complain about the distribution of God’s wherewithal ought to pause and reflect on what the Scriptures have to say about this matter. Paul instructed his readers in Romans (12:2-6, 16) saying, …prove what is that acceptable will of God…For I say through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office…Having gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us…Be not wise in your own conceits… God gives his grace in the measures which he desires to those whom he wills and we had best not allow ourselves to become puffed up should we perceive that we have been gifted with more than others. God has called us to do different things and so we possess gifts sufficient to accomplish those tasks. To look down on a brother or sister in Christ because they have not done what we have done, or worked as long as we have is to invite God’s chastisement for our pridefulness.

In today’s epistle (I Corinthians 9:24), the apostle spoke of running a race to obtain a prize. Now generally, races are a zero/sum gain that is, there is only a single winner and the remainder are losers. But the race which St. Paul wrote about is not a zero/sum gain because every participant who has been called of God and who diligently seeks his kingdom through Christ, will reach the finish line as a winner. This is not to say that there won’t be any losers. One cannot run the race, or work in the vineyard on his or her own terms. There are, of course, rules which govern the conduct of runners as well as workers. In this case we must follow God’s commandments. But the willful and hypocritical, should they remain in their unchanged states, cannot receive God’s gift of salvation (see John 3:18).

there is another aspect to the apostle’s message which we ought to consider. The race spoken of refers to this life, and the contenders being our fleshly nature versus our spiritual nature. In using this metaphor, the apostle was speaking of his personal struggle to keep his flesh under subjection so that his spiritual, or godly nature, would win. For our fleshly natures desire to do those things which satisfy our lust, while our spiritual natures seek to please God by means of the Holy Spirit. This is a real time exercise that runs congruently with the description our Lord gave us in our gospel lesson for today. Every day, we go forth to our labor using the gifts which he has given us. It does not matter which shift we are on. All that matters is that we show up and that we labor for him who received our wage of sin and death , and who, by virtue of his atoning work, has made it possible for us to receive the wage of salvation, which to St. Paul was a prize worth the effort.

But at this juncture, a caveat is in order. We should not infer from this, or any other biblical teaching, that our Lord has called us to salvation by means of our works. We work because we have his promise of redemption which we shall receive at the end of this life. We work because we have been accepted in the beloved. We work because we have been saved (see Ephesians 2:8-10).

And so, the workers are called. And they that are called then labor. And those who come last will receive the same as those who came first. The wage of salvation is the same for all who are called of God and, in the mystery of election, heed that calling. That being said, does that mean that there are not awards over and above salvation? Yes there are. They are the various crowns which the righteous shall receive based upon their service. But the awards for service should not be in any way confused with God’s gift of grace to his elect in Jesus Christ.

In closing there are four points our Lord affirmed in this parable of the vineyard.

First
He affirmed the notion that salvation comes to those who are called and who respond to that calling by showing up for work.

Second
God’s free grace is his to give to whom he pleases. Our Lord has set the parameters for salvation and not every soul that says they ought to receive such, does in fact receive it. God’s saving grace is given conditionally by faith in Christ, and not universally, because… (insert whatever excuse you might offer for not following God’s word and commandments).

Third
We are not to grumble at those who come to Christ after us, rather, we are to rejoice that they too have been saved.

Fourth
Our work should always be done in humility and in love for him who first loved us and gave himself for us: an offering and sacrifice acceptable to God. Humble acceptance of our place in God’s plan is part of his ordering of things. God expects us to be happy workers rejoicing in the strength of his salvation. We did not choose our work, he did. So, let us be content to serve in the capacities he has ordained for us to perform and give him thanks and praise for his gift to us of eternal life in his heavenly kingdom. What a prize!

Let us pray,

F
ATHER, help us as we struggle against our fleshly natures; and assist us as we encourage those within the church to daily fight the good fight and to witness the same in this sin-darkened world. And this we ask in the name of him who came that we might receive the wage of salvation, even Jesus Christ our Saviour and Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?
No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Immediate Prayer Please
Herb McCormick (86) is seriously ill with a kidney ailment and doctors want to operate, but it is unlikely that he would survive that procedure due to weakened condition. and of advanced age (86 years). He is retired Army and a man of strong faith (step-father to Jieun and Sungeun) and a great friend of Bishop Jerry. Please pray for the medical team treating Herb that they might be open to God’s guidance, pay attention and do their very best. Pray that Herb might make the right choices for treatment and that if it is his time that he might leave this world for heaven from his home in peace.

Evelyn, an 88 year young woman recently experienced a TIA affecting her sight, speech and walking. Please pray for God to guide those treating her and for her to let God carry her worry.

Tricia broke her left arm and it does not seem to be healing. Please pray God will enter in to her, help her to immobilize her arm and knit the bones together. Time is critical on this, if it does not start to heal in the next week or so, she will require surgery. She would appreciate your prayers for healing and patience.

Chelsea Brown has need of God’s strength and guidance for her, her daughter Lauren and those around her. Her life has been in turmoil for the past two years. Chelsea was in an accident which left her without the use of her right arm for almost two years, though after two surgeries it is back, her daughter has had three sets of lung blood clots, dropped out of college and lost her job and car due to another accident. For Our Country
Our country has lost its way. Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take. Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them. Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God. Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down. Down, into the depths of the pit. Pray people will recognize there is:

• One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
• All religions are not equal;
• All ways of life are not equal;
• The Bible holds the Key to Life;
• All rights come from God, not the State;
• Good;
• Bad;
• Evil;
• Right;
• Wrong;
• Allah is the Devil;
• Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late. Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

What is Septuagesima?
Septuagesima Sunday is the name given to the third Sunday before Lent. The term is sometimes applied to the period of the liturgical year which begins on this day and lasts through Shrove Tuesday (with the following day being Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins). This period is also known as the Pre-Lenten season or Shrovetide. The next two Sundays are labelled Sexagesima and Quinquagesima, the latter sometimes also called Shrove Sunday. The earliest Septuagesima Sunday can occur is January 18 (Easter falling on March 22 in nonleap year) and the latest is February 22 (Easter falling on April 25 in leap year).

Septuagesima comes from the Latin word for “seventieth,” with Sexagesima and Quinquagesima equalling “sixtieth” and “fiftieth” respectively. They are patterned after the Latin word for the season of Lent, Quadragesima, which means “fortieth” because Lent is forty days long (not counting the Sundays, which are all considered little Easters). Because a week is only seven days long, not ten, and since even then only six of those days might be counted if the pattern of Quadragesima is followed, Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima, don’t literally correspond to the periods of time they imply. It is interesting, however, that just about 70 days (68 actually) is the minimum number of days between the octave day of the Epiphany on January 14 and Easter, implying that a season just about 70 days long can always fit between the two.

The 17-day period beginning on Septuagesima Sunday was intended to be observed as a preparation for the season of Lent, which is itself a period of spiritual preparation (for Easter). In many countries, however, Septuagesima Sunday still marks the start of the carnival season, culminating on Shrove Tuesday, more commonly known as Mardi Gras. The Gospel reading for Septuagesima week is the parable of the Workers in the Vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16).
