Fifty-Fifth Anniversary of the Anglican Orthodox Church – 16 November 2018, Anno Domini
Fifty-five years ago today on 16 November 1963, James Parker Dees, a courageous man of God, withdrew from the Protestant Episcopal Church over issues of that Church over infidelity to Holy Writ, to the Thirty Nine Articles of Religion, a declining reverence in worship practices, and a low regard for the Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. He did so consistent with the biblical admonition:
B |
e ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. (2 Corinthians 6:14-18)
At that time, the Anglican Orthodox Church was founded by Bishop James Parker Dees. Many other clergy came out with Bishop Dees at that time, but later fell by the wayside under the heat of social persecution. Following his withdrawal from PECUSA, bands of PECUSA clergy marched around Bishop Dees’ home night and day for three days, and all manner of slander was rumored about him by those who bore much influence in the PECUSA and the local press. But Bishop Dees never looked back once he took up his cross to follow our Lord, and continued his Godly march until his death on Christmas Day 1990. There have been many saints of God who lent their hands and hearts to the support of the Anglican Orthodox Church founded by Bishop Dees.
One who stands out in stark relief is Mrs. Betty Hoffman – our National Secretary for fifty years until her departing to be with her Lord on 6 May 2017, after 84 years her on earth. She never lagged in her energy and dedication to the work begun by the blessed Bishop Dees.
May God bless the Anglican Orthodox Church with a continued source of dedicated and committed Clergy and Laity to continue the missionary work of this Church around the world.
Let us pray:
O |
God our Father, Father of Lights, and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, We know no Sovereign but thee. We praise your Holy Name, and continually seek your face in favor of our efforts to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ at home and abroad among all nations, tribes, and tongues. We seek your Guidance and Counsel in all that we do, and we beseech thee to continually send to us men and women who thirst after thee and who will follow thee in all avenues of life whether in sorrow or glorious triumph. Keep us ever humble in pursuit of truth and the preaching thereof; cause our steps not to slip in the day of trouble; imbue us with a heart of compassion and love for our fellows, especially those of your Church, and lead us ever onward to share in your Holy Presence at the end of our days; for we ask all in the Holy Name above every other name – our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

On Point
Someone asked, where do the quotes come from? The answer is from the people who uttered them. But, how did you find them? Oh, that. Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan. He always has some great ones to share. On to the On Point quotes –
Wealth is not evil. We wouldn’t remember the Good Samaritan if he didn’t have money to help someone else. Just keep it in perspective.

Among the natural rights of the Colonists are these: First, a right to life; Secondly, to liberty; Thirdly, to property; together with the right to support and defend them in the best manner they can. These are evident branches of, rather than deductions from, the duty of self-preservation, commonly called the first law of nature.

We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee.
Jeremiah 14:20
Empires have risen and fallen in rapid succession. Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Tyre, Carthage, Rome, Greece, Venice. Where are all these now? They were creations of man’s hand, and have passed away. But the true church of Christ lives on. The mightiest cities have become heaps of ruins. The broad walls of Babylon have sunk to the ground. The palaces of Nineveh are covered with mounds of dust. The hundred gates of Thebes are only matters of history. Tyre is a place where fishermen hang their nets. Carthage is a desolation. Yet all this time the true church stands. The gates of hell do not prevail against it. The earliest visible churches have in many cases decayed and perished. Where is the church of Ephesus… Antioch… Alexandria and…Constantinople? Where are the Corinthian… Philippian, and Thessalonian churches? … They departed from the Word of God. They were proud of their bishops… synods… ceremonies… learning, and antiquity. They did not glory in the true cross of Christ. They did not hold fast the gospel. They did not give the Lord Jesus his rightful office, or faith its rightful place. They are now among the things that have been. Their candlestick has been taken away. But the true church has lived on.

If God exists, everything is possible; if there is no God, everything is permitted.

Our salvation comes one way, by the Grace of God through our Lord Jesus. It is not through us to decide the salvation, but by God through His Son, who died for our sins. This is what the whole Gospel is based upon. This is the solid foundation, as Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of our faith. We are not Cramerians, nor are we Calvinists or Lutherans, but we are Christians primarily, who like the ideas of Cramner, et al. We should never be identified as followers of man but of Christ and God. When one becomes a follower of man, he ends up following the devil in a fashion, for if we serve ourselves, or follow ourselves, we tend up to end up in death, but if we follow Him, we have the gift of life as St. Paul explains “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23 KJV) The problem with the folks that identify themselves as something other than Christian, is that they start to believe on more of the ideas of the person they are following, than the ideas of Jesus Christ and God, whom they are supposed to be following. They get lost in the theological rabbit hole and wander so far back, they’ve gone past where they were supposed to be, and got lost off the narrow uphill trail towards heaven, and on the
wide downhill trail towards hell instead.

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.
The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.
The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off. Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.
The propers for the Twenty-Fifth Sunday after Trinity, which are actually the propers for the Sixth Sunday after Epiphany[1] can be found on Page 117-118:

OD, whose blessed Son was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil, and make us the sons of God, and heirs of eternal life; Grant us, we beseech thee, that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves, even as he is pure; that, when he shall appear again with power and great glory, we may be made like unto him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where with thee, O Father, and thee, O Holy Ghost, he liveth and reigneth ever, one God, world without end. Amen.
The Epistle for today came from the First General Epistle of Saint John, the Third Chapter, beginning at the First Verse:
B |
EHOLD, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
The Holy Gospel comes from the Gospel according to St. Matthew, the Twenty-Fourth Chapter, beginning at the Twenty-Third Verse:
T |
HEN if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. Immediately af- ter the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Twenty-Fifth Sunday after Trinity
18 November 2018, Anno Domini
The Lectionary for the Twenty-Fifth Sunday after Trinity, the Collect, Epistle, and Gospel are taken from the Sixth Sunday after Epiphany as indicated by the Book of Common Prayer rubric:
¶ If in any year there be twenty-six Sundays after Trinity, the service for the Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany shall be used on the Twenty-fifth Sunday. If there be twenty-seven, the service for the Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany shall be used on the Twenty-sixth, and the service for the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany on the Twenty-fifth. If there be fewer than twenty-five Sundays, the overplus shall be omitted.

There are those special Sundays on which the Collect, Epistle, and Gospel fit together so perfectly that it would seem negligent not to shine the bright light of understanding upon that union of meaning and purpose so brilliantly expressed. The Collect for today is one of the most inspiring, and inspired, of the Prayer Book; and it suites the sense and meaning of the Epistle and Gospel text of the day to an extraordinary degree.
We should acknowledge the truths of today’s Collect. The works of the devil are ancient – from even before Adam’s Fall in the Garden at Eden. He had rebelled against God and the very powers of Heaven and was cast down. Full of despoiled pride and vengeance, he set out to mar and destroy the beauty of God’s Creation, and most significantly, the man whom God had made as His crowning glory of Creation. As the Collect reminds us, our Lord Jesus Christ was foreordained to destroy the works of the devil and save His Elect from the curse of sin brought about from the temptations emanating from the Ill-Winded Tree. There is an allusion here to the sons (and daughters) of God who stand separate and distinct from the sons of mammon (the world). In this fact we must admit of only two generations of families upon God’s green earth – those of God, and those of the devil. In the purification of our souls, God refines us through the fires of tribulation and rejection of the world. The greater the fires, the purer the soul – just as silver being purified seven times in the Refiners Fire. Each refinement brings dross to the surface which is gathered by His Dipper and cast aside. After the seventh refinement, the silver is so smooth and pure as to reflect the image of the Refiner. Now we are altogether the sanctified vessels in the Household of God for service and for our soon glorification in Him. Sanctification is the process of BECOMING MORE AND MORE like Him in this mortal coil; but glorification is that transient moment in time when the scroll of our earthly life ends, and we are gathered to be with Him eternally and are LIKE HIM:
B |
ehold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” (1 Cor 15:51-55)
It may escape our daily awareness we are too often given to impersonating the devil as much as we do our Lord. Our careless actions often betray an unsettled sinfulness of which there needs to be repentance. Do you realize that careless ignorance is also sin. We are to study to show ourselves approved of God: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. (2 Tim 2:15-16) Have we done this as zealous for understanding, or have we sat lazily to hear the Word preached but never devoutly studied? Do you recall the admonition of the Lord to Peter when that apostle attempted to dissuade Jesus (out of ignorance) from offering Himself up? Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. (Matt 16:22-23) In his ignorance, Peter became the voice of Satan. Pride of ignorance can get a Christian into trouble with the Lord. In this case, a man who knew Christ well completely lacked understanding in saying words that were fed him directly by the devil. When we try to speak God’s Word in ignorance, we personify that evil one.
Our Epistle for today defines clearly what sin is! Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. So, do you ignorantly suppose that the Law has been done away? Perish the thought! We could not know righteousness were it not for the Law, and we could neither know sin were it not for the compelling manifestation of the Law. In fact, we were saved under the provision of the Law which Christ satisfied – but DID NOT ANNUL! Sin is still sin, and the Law condemns it. The elect are accounted righteous, not by their own works, but by the meritorious, imputed righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ! Our measure of faith will result in good works which give evidence of that faith.
The operative word in the opening line of this text is ‘IF’. There are no if’s, and’s, or but’s about it – our Lord has declared that there will truly be false prophets among us in these latter days, not a FEW, but MANY! Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And MANY FALSE PROPHETS shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. (Matt 24:4-13)
Now, my friends, which part of the Lord’s counsel above does not exist in our day? Have you noticed how Christians are viewed with almost uniform disgust around the world while those who, in the name of Allah, rape and behead little children, and these latter are viewed with greater respect? Has the world gone mad? Yes, in fact, it has always been so. The world can never comprehend the beauty of God’s Word, or even make sense of it.. It is the Holy Ghost, our Guide and Counsellor, who imparts wisdom in our hearts and minds.
Here is a wonderful thought to consider in relations the above textural reference in Matthew 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Traditionally, all Christians are buried with their graves oriented to the east. The purpose of that is to allow them the soonest opportunity to behold our Lord when He appears as the sunrise – from the east. Even the Temple at Jerusalem was so oriented that the very rays of the sun entered directly through the eastern gate to the Holy of Holies. Also consider that we shall behold Christ coming in the clouds. Do you remember that Pillar of Cloud by Day and fire by Night that both led, and followed, the Children of Israel in the Wilderness? And do you remember the Cloud that descended on the Mount of Transfiguration and revealed a glorified Christ? And, finally, do you remember the cloud that received Christ up into Heaven at His Ascension? Does this thought cause you to simply adore clouds. We never know which shall bear our Lord back to us just as He ascended.
Of course, let us not miss the point of the manner in which He returns: and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. He will not return as He first came – as a baby born in a humble barnyard; but as a conquering Savior bringing judgment to the wicked and salvation to the elect.
Then, consider the sound of the trumpet – an instrument of military distinction. In old Israel a custom of wedding significance was the sounding of the Trumpet. Just as the trumpet was sounded (often at the unsuspected midnight hour) to signal the approach of the bridegroom for his betrothed; so, does the Trumpet sound for the gathering of our Lord’s Bride, the Church. It will be best for us if we are wearing the proper wedding apparel (Uniform) purchased by our Lord – the Robe of Righteousness purchased by His blood at Calvary. Keep your lamps burning and be sure to be found in that proper apparel. He comes in Power!
T |
hen shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. (Matt 25:1-13)

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together because as is always the case there is a unifying message in the Scripture for this Sunday. In this case, there is a different take on the same Scripture used earlier in the year.

Amen.
The Collect reminds us Jesus was sent to destroy the works of the devil in us so we might be accounted as perfect at the final tally point allowing us, with the Holy Ghost’s help, make ourselves act more like Him, less like we want. This collect reveals His Purpose, to redeem us so we could have everlasting life and spend our eternity with our Creator in eternal light.
The Epistle reminds us we have to choose a side and so does the Gospel, if we choose the way of sin, we are on the Devil’s side. It is reminding us that we cannot serve two masters. We are either on God’s side or on Satan’s side. There are only two sides in this matter and there is no in between ground that we can stay in. The Epistle also says that you can tell who a man serves by his actions. A righteous man will perform righteous actions and is on God’s side. A sinful man will commit sinful actions and is on Satan’s side. It follows the Scripture verse where a man’s treasure is there will his heart be also. If our treasure is in heaven, our heart will lead us there. If our treasure is mammonly things, then our heart will lead us towards the pit.
For us, the choice is pretty clear. It is to follow God and His Word to the best of our abilities and to spread it through ought the whole wide world. For the other way is clearly an unpleasant alternative, permanent separation from God. Whereas following God will bring us closer to our Creator for all eternity, which is the most pleasant existence after death one can imagine. In fact, due to our feeble minds and bodies, we cannot comprehend how wonderful it will be to spend eternity with God and our fellow believers.
The Gospel and the Epistle both tell us those who follow God to the best of their abilities, which manifests itself in good works, are on God’s side, while those who follow themselves and fall into temptation are on Satan’s side. Clearly it is an easy choice to see who we should follow. It is harder in practice to remain on the course; but with God and the Holy Spirit guiding us, we should be able to remain on a constant path towards eternal life.
We cannot be on the side of the Devil, if we want eternal life. So, what path should we take if we wish to inherit eternal life? We read the Word of God, and take it as a whole to our life, not just one really nice verse we like, but we must take it as a whole. It is all about the big picture and not just the little itty bitty part of Scripture that we pick up on. Otherwise we become like many so called “theologians”, debating the meaning of one verse and how it applies to their “theology.” When the only theology we should be concerned about is reading Scripture and following Christ and his principles and applying it to our lives. Too many people subscribe to various theological theories such as Calvinism, Zwigiliism, etc., and lose sight of the fact those men ultimately would choose to be known as “Christians” or followers of Christ and not Calvinists, Cramnarians, etc. If they were known as those then, then they would be followers of the Devil and not of God. So, let us be careful when we read Scripture we are taking in as a whole and not just a part.
Saint John points out in his Epistle that Christ was brought down here to take away the stain of our sin which prevents us from entering into heaven. He points out to actually turn over a new leaf, we need to do as Christ counsels and do our best to go forth and sin no more. We need to perform the actions that align with our stated belief. If we say we are a Christian; that means we have to hold fast to Christ’s principles. But if we say we are a Christian and go out and rob a bank or be thoughtlessly cruel to our neighbor, then John points out we cannot really be a Christian, for we are not holding to Christ’s principles. We would be in fact rejecting Him by our actions. As I often say in my sermons, actions speak louder than words. So, we need to do our best to align our actions with what Christ teaches in Scripture.
The unifying theme of the Gospel, Collect and Epistle is there are two sides in this spiritual conflict and the right light side will defeat the dark evil side in the end. Which side do you want to be on, eternal life or that of eternal death? The side of good is eternal life and the side of evil and Satan of eternal death. There may not be as many short term gain in Good, but if we perform a cost-benefit analysis, the CBA suggests the side of God, of goodness, of light is the best in the long term, which is what the Bible is all about, planning for the long term.
If we focus on the short term, doing what is easy, rather than righteous, we shall find ourselves shorted, in a loss, rather than a profit. Our liabilities will be more than our assets. But, if we choose the side of righteousness, then, we shall be able to have more assets then liabilities and be profitable, not in a financial sense, but rather in the spiritual sense.
So, to sum up the lessons we have learned; we are pitifully weak creatures, with free will. There may well be a form of predestination; but the key is, we are free to choose God or Satan. It lies upon us to choose the fork in the road. One will lead to goodness, like cherry pie, and the other will lead to coal. Which do we want to choose?
Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail. The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.
The time is now, not tomorrow. The time has come, indeed. How will you ACT?
It is by our actions we are known.
Be of God – Live of God – Act of God
Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon
We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon. If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth. This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.
Twenty-Fifth Sunday after Trinity
In Matthew’s gospel (24:23-31), our Lord warned the faithful regarding the rise of false messiahs in the time before his return. As born again believers, we understand that we are living in a world dominated by the forces of darkness. We also know that these forces are well-led and have great power to carry out all sorts of nefarious activities. The Bible tells us that these wicked powers will have sway here until our Lord returns to break their dominance and crush their rebellion at his second advent.
Scriptures also tell us until his coming to gather us to himself, we will face trials and tribulations of such degrees as God has seen fit for us to pass through as part of our earthly pilgrimage. This will likely include our exposure to false Christs and false prophets who will come in their pretentious hope that they might deceive the very elect of God (Matthew 24:24).
As regenerate souls in Christ, we derive much comfort from the words of God as found in the Holy Bible. And in particular, we find that blessed assurance in our Lord’s remarks concerning his church that not even the gates of hell shall prevail against it. That said, we should not infer from them that Satan and his minions (both natural and supernatural) are powerless to tempt us into violating God’s word by thought, word and deed; neither are they lax in their efforts to overthrow our faith through our acceptance of some man-made construct or idea which conflicts with God’s word written. These minions of evil will also attempt to render our witness of no effect through any questionable feelings we harbor, any grudges we bear, and any personal faults which we have not confessed to God. They will also prey on those Christians who possess only a rudimentary understanding of scripture in hopes of undermining their Christian walk and witness.
If the devil were ever to overthrow our faith (as is true for the unregenerate), the next step for him will be to provide us with some alternative idea or personage in which to place our faith. Satan desires our worship. He does not want us becoming atheists. He desires a simple faith which rejects the one, true and living God in favor of worship of himself. He might start out with a seemingly harmless concept such as “God is in all things,” or “You can decide your own destiny.” Once you have accepted those tenets, then he can offer you something a bit stronger such as: “God is working through this or that good person. It does not matter that he or she is not following the doctrinal tenets of Holy Scripture because he or she is all about searching for the truth of God in everything,” or “There are many ways to God.” And last but not least, he will offer us that same old snare he used on Eve in the Garden of Eden: “You can be as gods.”
Earlier in Matthew 24, our Lord warned the faithful to take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name saying I am Christ; and shall deceive many (Matthew 24:4-5). This warning was necessary because even the devout Christian can be influenced to buy into the devil’s regime if their hearts are not right with God. Nevertheless, as regenerate people in Christ, we have a distinct advantage over the unregenerate in that we are indwelt by the Holy Ghost. Yet even we have the unfortunate ability to quench the Spirit of God. And on that account, the devil and his minions will encourage us to act in ways which will impair our fellowship with the Godhead. And the devil will inject us with pride so that we will not confess our ills before God’s throne of grace and be healed. God will then send us troubles to discipline us and bring us back into line. For if we are truly his own, he will not let us slip out of his hands; but O what troubles may come to turn our hearts back to him if we remain stubborn and stiff- necked.
We know that only through true and heart-felt confession to God, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, will our sins and trespasses be forgiven and forgotten. It is therefore our duty to maintain our fellowship with the Godhead through daily self-judgment, prayer and Bible reading. We cannot hope to win the victory as true and faithful servants otherwise. The Bible says, My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge… (Hosea 4: 6) which makes it rather clear that our gracious and loving God prefers biblical literates to the inverse. The old saying of knowledge is power certainly holds true for us as regenerate beings in Christ.
So, what is the end game for all this deception? Bible believing Christians know it involves Rejection, Rebellion and Ruin of the faith once delivered to the saints. The false Christs and the false prophets will take advantage of ambivalent Christians precisely because they have no firm foundation on which to rest their faith. They are tossed about by every wind of doctrine and sleight of hand which the evil one can conjure up to capsize them. St. Paul knew what it was like to be shipwrecked and a castaway. He weathered such only by trusting in the power of him who had sent him on his way as a witness on behalf of the gospel. He knew the truth as he had received it from our Lord himself. If you have such faith confirmed in your heart, even though the devil will attempt to shake your faith, you will not be moved because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world (I John 4:4).
The snares which the devil and his minions have set are masterfully hidden from mortal eyes. They are uniformly presented as good and useful purposes and ideals. They are hidden amongst a myriad of smooth and sugary words. And they are hidden within our hearts in the form of hatred, malice and greedy designs which the devil has coaxed us to daub over with the untempered morter of our own rationalizations as to their true nature. So, in light of all those aforementioned points, we ought to be ever vigilant.
As soldiers of the cross, we are expected to don the whole armour of God. God will one day give us permission to remove it in his heavenly kingdom where it will be superfluous to our new natures and our new bodies. But until that day when we receive our crowns of awards from the Master himself, we had better keep our armour on and ever maintain its effectiveness.
The false deceivers of this world will be temporarily successful. They will grow as the true Christian faith declines. Nevertheless, we should remember that God has forewarned us of their plans so we who are born-again in Christ Jesus will avoid their snares via the work and power of the Holy Spirit. God does not intend for his own to fall into enemy hands. Make that your prayer to him as well and live the victory which has been made available to us through his atoning sacrifice.
Let us pray,
O |
Father, help us in this time of our earthly pilgrimage to be faithful soldiers of the cross; and give us grace sufficient for our tasks, that we might be effective witnesses for thee; and these things we ask in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Have a blessed week, Bryan+
People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.
The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.
Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?
No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.
What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.
How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.
What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.
Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!
Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.
Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country
Our country has lost its way. Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take. Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them. Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God. Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down. Down, into the depths of the pit. Pray people will recognize there is:
- One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
- All religions are not equal;
- All ways of life are not equal;
- The Bible holds the Key to Life;
- All rights come from God, not the State;
- Good;
- Bad;
- Evil;
- Right;
- Wrong;
- Allah is the Devil;
- Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.
Pray this recognition will not come too late. Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.
