Third Sunday in Advent
Sunday Report

Today was the Third Sunday in Advent the period including the four Sundays before Christmas; the first Sunday of which is always the nearest Sunday to the feast of St. Andrew (30 November). Advent is a season of preparation and penitence. We prepare ourselves to celebrate the coming of Jesus at Christmas, but we also look forward to his second coming. The liturgical color for this season is purple reminding us of the Kingship of Jesus and that Advent is also a season of penitential preparation. Rose-color may be used on the third Sunday of Advent, signifying for us a lightening up of the penitential nature of the season as we draw closer to Christmas.

On Point
Someone asked, where do the quotes come from? The answer is from the people who uttered them. But, how did you find them? Oh, that. Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan. He always has some great ones to share. On to the On Point quotes –

On the Gospels
The first fact in the history of Christendom is a number of people who say they have seen the Resurrection. If they had died without making anyone else believe this ‘gospel’ no gospels would ever have been written.

On the Incarnation
The Second Person in God, the Son, became human Himself: was born into the world as an actual man—a real man of a particular height, with hair of a particular colour, speaking a particular language, weighing so many stone. The Eternal Being, who knows everything and who created the whole universe, became not only a man but (before that) a baby, and before that a foetus inside a Woman’s body. If you want to get the hang of it, think how you would like to become a slug or a crab.

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off. Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers are found on Page 93-94, with the Collect first:

LMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal, through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, now and ever. Amen.

¶ This Collect is to be repeated every day, after the other Collects in Advent, until Christmas Day.

The Epistle for today came from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, the Fourth Chapter beginning at the First Verse.

Paul calls on those who would be the ministers of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God to be good and faithful stewards leading their flock rather than commanding from the rear. He tells them not to be fearful of the judgment of man. In fact, he tells he is not concerned of the judgment of men, or even that of himself, but rather that of God. God knows our hearts and when He judges, He “will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.”

Let it be fully understood that when Paul writes of ministers and stewards, he is talking of each of us, not just those who are “ordained ministers.” We each must be good and faithful stewards of the gifts God has entrusted to each of us. We each must help those around us benefit from the gifts which are freely given.

L
ET a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man’s judgment: yea, I judge not mine own self. For I know nothing against myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord. Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

The Gospel for today came from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, the Eleventh Chapter, beginning at the Second Verse. Now when John the Baptist “had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, and said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?” John was Jesus’ cousin and the one who baptized Him and heard God say, THIS IS MY SON IN WHOM I AM WELL PLEASED.” Yet, he and the rest of the Jews of the time expected the Messiah to come into Jerusalem in triumph, sit in the temple and rule, commanding, nay compelling the Romans to leave. No doubt marveling at the question, for it was asked of Him who had performed countless genuine miracles, healing the blind, the deaf the lame, “Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.” As John’s disciples parted, Jesus talked to those about him. He asked them concerning John, “What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet?” He was counseling them, trying to help them fully understand the implications of what was around them. He was there! So, he explained that John was not “just” a prophet, but the messenger of God, the man with the flag running before the locomotive. He went on, “For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.” Because Jesus came into this world, not to be the King of the Present, but rather the King of that to Come.

A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

The Third Sunday in Advent
The Collect.

O
LORD Jesus Christ, who at thy first coming didst send thy messenger to prepare thy way before thee; Grant that the ministers and stewards of thy mysteries may likewise so prepare and make ready thy way, by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, that at thy second coming to judge the world we may be found an acceptable people in thy sight, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

My dear Brethren in Christ, this week we observe the ember days of Advent, the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday wherein the Church exhorts us to pray for those who are preparing to undertake the ordained ministry of Word and Sacrament. This being said, today’s Gospel text shows us how all Christians may strengthen their faith in the midst of doubt and temptation, so that they may serve as tools whereby the Holy Ghost brings poor and destitute sinners to the promise of eternal life found in Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Gospel
Matthew 11.2

N
OW when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, and said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? …

A lively faith in Our Lord Jesus Christ is essential for a truly Christian life. However, many people think that having a lively faith in Christ implies that Christians never suffer from doubt or temptation. But remember, John knew Our Lord for a long time prior to his imprisonment, and was a faithful minister of God’s Word. He knew Our Lord from his mother’s womb, and preached of Him boldly in the desert, witnessing that Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. However, now he is shut up in prison for preaching against the immoralities of the King. In his gloomy cell, John is assailed with doubts over whether Christ is indeed the promised Messiah and Savior foretold by the prophets since the world began. We learn from this that even holy men are subject to the trying of their faith through temporary doubts and temptations, and need the reassurance of God’s Word to sustain them through these tribulations. He, therefore, sends two of his disciples to enquire of Our Lord, that his faltering faith might be strengthened and confirmed by the words of Jesus Christ.

As you proceed through the Christian life, do you ever feel like John? Upon seeing and experiencing the wickedness of the world around you, are you ever tempted to doubt Jesus Christ and the promise of His Kingdom? Do you ever look upon the carnage of our once Christian civilization, and doubt whether Christ can save it? Do you say with the prophet Ezekiel,“Can these bones live? (Ez. 37:3) Fear not, for God through His Apostles warns us that the pathway to eternal life with God is one of temptation and suffering, that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. (Acts 14:22) Therefore, let us not give in to temptation or doubting, but rather let us trust that God will see us through to the end. Let us take comfort in the words of God spoken to David, a man who suffered from doubt and temptations in his own troublesome times, Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. (Psalm 46:10) The Devil will assault you with many doubts and temptations in the Christian life. When this happens, follow John’s example by going to the Lord and seeking comfort and edification from His Holy Word. When you face temptation, pray that God may give you the grace to repent of your sins, to seek after the Truth of His Word in your Bibles and in the quiet prayer of your hearts. Trust that the Holy Ghost will bring you to Jesus Christ, that He will make Christ known to you as your Lord and Savior.

Although the flame of your faith may burn dimly at times, yet know that if you but cling to the promises of Jesus Christ, then the Holy Ghost will fan your dim faith into a flaming fire whereby the light of Christ shall be made known among men.

Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. Indeed, and what answer do we hear from the words of the Lord? If you wish to strengthen your faith in the midst of suffering and doubt, then look to your bibles and see how Christ continues to fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament in the present day. ccontinues to fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament in the present day.

Christ makes the lame to walk, the blind to see, the deaf to hear, the lepers to be clean, and the dead to be resurrected. Take your own selves for instance. By yourselves, you are poor and destitute sinners, deaf to God’s Word, blind to the beauties of His grace, dead in your trespasses and sins, contaminated by the spiritual leprosy of original sin so that your whole nature is totally depraved and merits only eternal damnation. However, Christ comes to you, and opens your ears so that you may hear the Gospel. You had no part in accomplishing this, and in all probability you actively resisted Him, but yet His purpose stands. Christians, He has preordained you to eternal life from before the foundation of the world. He opens a way into your hearts, He washes you in His own Blood, He heals your wounds by the Holy Ghost, and He turns your poverty into riches by reckoning His righteousness to your account, and making His Word take root in your souls. Therefore, be strengthened in your faith, for the grace of Christ has done all these things, and will continue to work for good to them that love Him and are called according to His purpose, through all the sufferings of this life, unto the world’s end. Do not take offense at the Gospel of Christ, but earnestly believe in Christ, knowing that He will lead you through the temptations of this life, healing you of your sins, and sanctifying you by His Spirit unto everlasting life. Go to Jesus Christ with all your heart, and His Word will strengthen your faith in the midst of suffering and doubt and temptation, and will enable you to persevere unto the end.

And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Christians, Christ not only restores you to health and confirms your faith in Him, but also calls you to labor for the spreading of His saving health to all nations. Of course, not everyone is called to stand in a pulpit or take upon himself a pastorate, but every Christian is called to faithfully walk in the way of Christ, and thereby witness to Him, for Our Lord says to you, Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Matt. 11:28) Don’t waste your time on the trivial things of this fallen world, but dedicate yourselves to those things which are eternal and lead to your everlasting happiness! Prepare the way of the Lord by repenting of your sins and seeking the Holy Ghost to restore you to the life of Christ. By His grace, diligently study God’s Word, seek God’s glory, and proclaim the Gospel by word and deed to every creature. Have faith in the love and work of Christ which saves you from your sins. Love God and make much of His Law. Earnestly pray for the Holy Ghost to bind God’s Law of love to your hearts and the hearts of your children. Work for His Word to be the center of your lives and households. Undertake your daily occupations honestly and to the best of your ability, as in the sight of God, for in this way you can be a witness to Him among men. Fear not when the Devil puts doubts or temptations into your hearts, but trust that the Lord’s strength is perfected in your weaknesses. Know that if He has saved you from your sins and reconciled you to God, then He will also sustain you in the Christian life through all doubts and temptations unto the end, for, If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. You are freed Christian men, saved by the Blood of Christ. Therefore boldly speak His Word and faithfully bear witness to Him with your lips and your lives in all that you do. In this way you will be used by Christ as His servants to open spiritual pathways whereby the Holy Ghost enters the souls of your sin-sick neighbors and restores them to health. This is the true Christian calling, this is the only life worth living, and I pray that you and I may walk it until our dying day, when we will receive the reward and perfection of our faith, even eternal life with God and with all His saints through Jesus Christ Our Lord. For to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Amen.

¶ This Collect is to be repeated every day, after the other Collects in Advent, until Christmas Day.

In the Collect for the Third Sunday in Advent, we are referred to as the ministers and stewards (caretakers) of the mysteries of God: the Scriptures and His Word. We ask for help in getting the hearts of the disobedient, which is us, by the wisdom of the just, which is God and the Holy Spirit, to turn and look to the Kingdom of God for answers and not this world. We are in a way like John the Baptist who prepared the way for Christ’s coming by preaching and preparing the path for Christ to begin his ministry. By preaching the Word, we are likewise preparing the World for His Return, by getting their hearts ready by being guided by the Holy Spirit and spreading the Good News across the globe.

The collect gets to the heart of the matter directly. It says that in order for us to follow God, we need our disobedient hearts to shift focus to that of being just, in order to be ready to follow Him. This world will not help us follow Him nor will their solutions help us to follow him. When we look to the world for solutions, we find the solutions of this world. This world, ruled by the Prince of this world, the Prince of Air, the devil himself! But Only His Solutions will help us to follow Him. We will only prosper if we follow His Solutions, that is God’s solutions. What will people think when we reject worldly solutions to worldly problems. There is an answer for that, conveniently following the Collect.

In the Epistle, Paul tells us not fear what others think of us, but rather be concerned about what God thinks of what we are doing and what direction in which He wants us to go. Rather than spend the mental energy on being concerned with what others think, let us use that same mental energy to do our best for God, our family and our country. We can get a lot more done for God this way and it will be better for our hearts, souls and minds if we think this way. Worry does not solve any problems; but it can create problems if we let it. So, let us not worry about the opinions of man, but of God instead. We will profit spiritually this way.

This is a very hard concept for many people to act on, including myself. However, it is something that each and every one of us should be working towards. What God thinks of us is a more important standard to hold ourselves to than what the people in this world think of us. We are to look to heaven for the answers to our worldly problems, not to this world. The world’s solutions have been tried and found wanting, but heaven’s solutions are never wanting. The only failure is that of their implementation which is on us and not on God. We just need to have the willpower, which can get from the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, to implement these solutions around us.

Rather than fear man, we must fear God, and do what He wants us to do. We must concern ourselves with God’s opinion rather than Man’s opinion. Then perhaps maybe, some in this world will see what we are doing for Him and come to know Him and join Him. We will never know how much and impact we have on others around us. That is why we must be mindful of how we act around others. It is on us to be good ambassadors of Christ and to make good and lasting positive impressions on everyone we encounter. It is very much like how we are to act when traveling for work. We are called to be good representatives of the company and our conduct reflects very much on the company we work for, or in this case, God. So, let us be the best representatives of God we can be. Some people will not be receptive of course, so we must shake the dust off our boots and leave. Some will be receptive and even those that aren’t, in time, might be open to hearing God’s message. We aren’t called to force God’s message on others, but to offer it if they wish to hear it. Otherwise, we must do our part to be polite and kind to others, believers and other sorts of believers/non-believers, be it at work, school or home. Following God’s ways, we will be a much happier people.

We will never get anywhere if we follow the ways of this world. As in John 1:11-13 He came unto His own and His Own received him not. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the power to become the Sons of God, even to them that believe on His name. Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor the will of man, but of God.

If we are born of God, then it is Him to whom we must return and not man. As the verse from John points out, even Jesus came to us and we refused him; how can we expect any better treatment from man, than that given God Himself, who came down for us? We should not be surprised when our fellow men treat us like dirt. We know ourselves how depraved we can be without the guiding light of the Holy Spirit in us.

But the next part of the verse tells us what we will get if we join with him. He gave us the power to become the Sons of God, as we are His adopted children. He is giving us our eternal inheritance, if we will but follow Him. We are going to get an absolutely wonderful reward, if we do our very best to follow Him. There is a distinct difference between saying you are doing your best and actually doing your best.

The treatment we receive in this world will pale in comparison to the treatment God will give us in the next world if we but do our very best to follow Him. He has given us the power to become the Sons of God; we are God’s adopted children. This is a power greater than any in this world not of God’s Hands. This is a power that cannot be taken from us, as we are tightly in God’s Hand. The enemy cannot pluck us out of God’s grasp, once we have willingly joined ourselves to God through the help of the Holy Ghost. We need the unifying spirit of the Holy Ghost to help us understand the concepts of Scripture; not only to understand them, but to follow them. With the help of the Holy Ghost, we can understand what we are to do; more than that, we will be able to apply the concepts we learn from Scripture to our everyday lives.

In the Gospel, Christ asks the crowd of what they expected to see? Some great big flashy sign He was going to overthrow the Romans and unite the Jews to conquer the world? That was what they expected, but not what He came for! He says more than a prophet and that is true. Jesus is more than a prophet, He is the Son of God who came to die for our sins that we might not perish but have everlasting life. He did not come to rule the world, for it would be only a temporal state. He came for far more than that; to prepare our hearts for eternity and change us from unjust to just creatures, worthy of God’s creation and His Hands. As John the Baptist came to prepare the way for Christ’s preaching, Christ came to prepare our way to join our Father in Heaven. Without this preparation, we would not have the wonderful gift of eternal life.

His sacrifice was the physical and spiritual action which paved the road for our ascent to heaven. He came to mold and to shape us from being roughly made to something very valuable. He came to transform us from death to being truly alive.

Life is a continual process of learning in every aspect of our lives, not least of these aspects is our spiritual growth and development. The Japanese have a word for this, introduced into their industry by the American engineer W. Edwards Deming, Kaizen (改善), that is to say continuous improvement. Never perfect, but always endeavoring to improve. Day by day. Our goal is to make the next day better than the last. This is how we must continually develop as Christians.

To care for the mysteries of God properly, we must continue to learn in our spiritual lives; if we do this, we will keep growing more and more every day. Reading Scripture is one way to further our spiritual development, as well as helping others without thought for ourselves. We have to undergo our spiritual rebirth before we can help to transform others and to serve others. To accomplish this, we need to have the mental state that only the Holy Ghost can give us. We must keep trying our best to improve and learn from the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit and to trust in God and dread naught.

As He came to change us for the better, Paul and the Collect remind us to do the same for others. We have to keep trying to do our best to help our friends and family to be better, all the while doing our best to be the best Christians and humans we can be. All the while shining the light of Christ into the darkness of this world as His ambassadors. We know not what seeds we plant when we perform such actions and in a future time they may bear fruit. We must not try and rush the work of the Holy Spirit, who works on God’s time and not that of our own time. All good things will happen in due course. If we do our part by planting the seed, the Holy Ghost will nurture and develop this seed to bear fruit. We must put our hearts and minds together and think about what God wants us to do in the end, rather than what we want to do. Put God first and all will be well, is what can be taken from today’s collects and lessons, ultimately. We must be willing do to this; then we can be properly caring for the mysteries of God.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail. The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow. The time has come, indeed. How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Amen.

As we reflect on these passages of the Word of God that we have heard selected for this the third Sunday in Advent.. we should think fulfillment. The Word was fulfilled in the birth of Jesus those long years ago, time and again we have been pointed to this event in history through the many prophecies in the Old Testament; now it is done.

One of the interesting things that happened during this first coming, the birth of Christ; some people were aware of the event, others went about their day to day lives without any clue to the happenings. The Holy Spirit illumined at least six people that year or so before that the birth of John the baptizer was announce, and he cousin Jesus Christ birth was announced . Let’s check the record. After John was born, “…And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

B
LESSED be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. (Luke 1:67-79)

In this prophesy of Zacharias we find many passages that were penned by the psalmist, Isaiah, Malachi, among others. In each case with these passages brought to mind, Zacharias is pointing out the 100% accuracy of God’s prophets. This verification of the Word is most important. Our understanding of the prophets and the prophesy of God there was a most important component. They were and will always be fulfilled 100 percent. Not half, not two-thirds, not 99%, but 100%. So as Zacharias

After Mary was told she was going to be a mother of the Messiah, she burst into a song of praise. The famous Magnificat:

M
Y soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me; and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel; as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever.

Then later, when Jesus was taken to the temple in Jerusalem to be presented to the priest as was the custom for a first born male. A very elderly man approach Mary and Joseph as they were taking baby Jesus to the temple. Let’s go to the record and see what happened:

A
ND, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, LORD, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

And then there was Anna, an elderly widow who has dedicated her life to prayer and service at the temple since the time of her husband’s death. And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. (Luke 2:36-38)

In each one of these events we find the work of the Holy Spirit in showing the fulfillment of prophesies from the Old Testament. In one way we see the four hundred silent years finally shattered. There have not been any prophesies or open preaching of the coming of Messiah since the last of the minor prophets writings. And yet, there were some who knew that the Messiah’s coming was near. Notice that it was the simple unpretentious who were aware of something happening in the world around them. John the baptizer’s special birth, Jesus Christ miraculous birth, straight forward truth being told by perfect strangers; all this ties into the wonderful mystery of the birth of Christ.

Here in the third Sunday in Advent, the pink candle of the Advent wreath representing HOPE that lies in the birth of our Salvation, we bring that whole concept into mind. This is the coming of the Lord … For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Look at Psalm 85, verses 8 – 13

I
WILL hear what God the Lord will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.
9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land.
10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 Yea, the Lord shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase.
13 Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.

Notice the key phrases, peace and salvation; Love and faithfulness; Righteousness and peace, Faithfulness and righteousness

In this verse as well as in Malachi both refer to John the baptizer, the cousin of Jesus. Else where we can read passages that speak of preparing the way of the Lord.

Ironically, a group of pagans well East of Bethlehem will pour over all types of sacred script to see what might be revealed in an astronomical happening. I speak of the Magi. They had been watching the heavens as they generally did when they noticed a new light, a new star, so they try to figure out what it means and are able to surmise that it was announcing the birth of a king. Interestingly enough, God didn’t always use His word, there were signs and wonders, “…the Heavens declared the Glory of God…” as the 19th psalm begins.

But the people of the book, the Hebrews should not have been ignorant, unless someone wasn’t teaching them!

We can see that there were people in Jesus early life who did understand who he was, they did understand why he was here. But you also notice that the Spirit of God was upon them, they didn’t do this on their own. They did need the illumination of the Holy Spirit to allow them to see what was before them.

So how do we reveal Christ to others? In today’s world there are many silent and non-invasive ways to let others know that Jesus Christ is in control of your life. You can live a life to the best of your ability or you can ask God to use you to the best of the talents that He gave you; the latter would be by far the better way. This being that Christ living through us is far more powerful than anything we can do, in thought, word, or deed. We can share God’s love with others without having to beat anyone over the head with a Bible. We can show others that God is in us by example, by trying to be the person that God would have us to be, and most especially asking God to forgive us and renew us DAILY in the likeness of His Son, Jesus Christ.

It isn’t easy. There are plenty of things, events, people, and others issues that can make us angry, discouraged, depressed, or just down right unchristlike. It is so much easier to give in to our self and not try to behave or be Christ like. We must pray daily for a renewed spirit of faithfulness and a renewed sense of our total inability to do it ourselves, we need His help to do the job.

Let us pray:

F
ATHER God please help us to relate and understand your Word and to translate it in this season of hyper busyness, let us try to pause and reflect on the great Gift that You sent us, the perfect, once and for all sacrifice for our sins, the only begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ our Lord and Redeemer. We ask that you be with all those who are lonely, afraid, cold, hungry, and without salvation, bringing them the Light of the World, most especially at this time of the year. Help us to be the bearers of Good News, to be a small light in the great darkness that surrounds us, to make us salt and light to the world. These things we ask in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

O
GOD, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

T
HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon
We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon. If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth. This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Third Sunday in Advent

1 Thessalonians 5:12-24

A
ND we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; 13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves. 14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. 15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. 16 Rejoice evermore. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 19 Quench not the Spirit. 20 Despise not prophesyings. 21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. 23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

In his first letter to the people of Thessalonica, Paul exhorts them to be proactive in the faith. In verses 12 and 13, he reminded the faithful to esteem their clergy for their work among them. Ministers may have a difficult time overseeing their church bodies as they will find the devil busy making their tasks even more burdensome. If congregants will assist their ministers in bearing their loads, it can be rewarding for all. Even if it’s a kind word of encouragement, every little bit helps. Being helpful includes serving on vestries or church boards, teaching Sunday school, and the like. Remember, every Christian’s primary function has always been to witness and to work in the harvest of our Lord utilizing the spiritual gifts they have received as set forth in Scripture. It is also fitting that Christians be at peace among yourselves. Helping with the duties of worship, teaching and various other activities in the life of the church requires patience and a settled and peaceable nature. We do not need to be overbearing, rude or impatient with our fellows in the faith. Godly harmony is the product of a love of one another in Christ. Work for peaceful relations within the church body and avoid divisiveness and heretical matters that do engender strife. Nevertheless, do not compromise with those who would divide the church on matters clearly outside the boundaries of Scripture.

In verses 14 and 15 the apostle Paul instructed the brethren to, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. Why should we leave the weak and frail of faith to languish among us as Christians? The whole reason for the coming of the Holy Ghost was to enlighten and enrich the faith of all who would come to Christ. If we are born again of the Spirit then we have been called to proclaim God’s word to others as witnesses on his behalf. Those who are lacking can be filled if they are encouraged by their fellows and the Holy Ghost urges them. God draws us to himself and we who have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit are to assist others as we can. Yes, we are to admonish, rebuke and chide, reminding those who are new to the Christian walk that submitting to earthly lusts and sinful habits will impair their fellowship with the Godhead. God’s Son came to free us from such things not enable us to continue in them.

Verses 16 through 22 are pretty much self-explanatory. We are to rejoice evermore (v.16). God has given us a gift of inestimable value and such is reason enough for possessing a cheerful nature. We are also to pray without ceasing (v.17). Our heavenly Father wants to hear from us and prayer is the way we communicate with him. Fellowship with God is but a bowed head and a reverent setting forth of our words and thoughts to him. Time and place does not matter. You don’t have to make a show of your faith in order to talk with the LORD of hosts. He is ever-present and ever-ready to hear us when we truly call upon him in humble prayer. With that in mind then, shouldn’t we be more attentive to him and seek his will for us upon every occasion? We are often real quick to call on him to help us in the day of trouble; but what about the times where we are at peace with others, or enjoying our friends and family? God is present, so invite him in.

Further, we are to in every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you (v.18). Offering up to our gracious LORD prayers of thanksgiving is a sure sign that we love God and are grateful for his gifts and blessings which he sends our way. When people do things for us, we are expected as an act of courtesy to reply to their giving with a word of thanks. Those who are possess a spirit of gratitude are happier people for it, and are more likely to receive further blessings on that account. It is not merely a proverbial “tit for tat” but a spirit— a mind set— that recognizes the giver as well as the gift. God has given to us the greatest of all gifts— eternal life in his coming kingdom through the offices of his only begotten Son. Should we not be in eternal praise and thanksgiving for that?

The next several verses are more or less “do nots.” The first is quench not the Spirit (v.19). The Holy Ghost is what we have been baptized with. The fire of God in the Spirit animates and enlivens us. The Holy Ghost guides us into all truth and teaches us those things which the Father would have us to know in our goings forth each day. To quench his Spirit is to diminish our Christian character. If we are without it, then we are in darkness and subject to the workings of the evil one. Remember the children’s song, This Little Light of Mine? Well then let it shine and don’t let Satan put it out.

We are to despise not prophesyings (v.20). To paraphrase Rev Matthew Henry concerning this passage “ by prophesying [we mean] the preaching of the word as well as its interpretation and application in light of scriptural truth.” Also, “We must not despise preaching. It is useful and many times needful to have our minds stirred up, our affections and resolutions excited to those things that we knew before to be our interest and our duty.” This no way means that we are to buy into any so-called prophecy that someone might present to us as the word of God on their own accord. Such prophesying ought to be weighed against the scriptures themselves (see Acts 17:11). Paul tells us in I Corinthians 14:31-33, For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted (v.31). And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets (v.32). For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints (v.33). Verse 32 makes it clear that prophecy is subject to the truth of the prophets of old and to the revelation of scripture by the apostles who wrote or dictated the words they received from on high. No new revelation has been made nor will be because everything needed for the completion of the end of all things has been supplied. We are not to trust man’s word but God’s, and God has set forth his intentions from ancient times. We are, therefore, not to accept some new-comer with a vision that bears little or no relation to those things set down in Holy Writ. And with that in mind, we are to prove all things; hold fast that which is good (v.21). We can only do this by being discerning in our faith.
Finally, we are to abstain from all appearances of evil (v.22). Ergo, if it looks bad, or feels bad, don’t do it. Don’t accept it. The scriptures have prohibitions enumerated in them so there is no excuse for seeking “gray areas” governing our behaviors, habits, and exceptions where God has provided none (see I Corinthians 6:9-10; Philippians 3:18-19; II Timothy 3:1-5). And the apostle supplies us with comfort from above when he concluded his remarks by stating, And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body by preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (v.23). Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it (v.24). So trust then in God’s holy Word and embrace his blessed Spirit who will guide you into all truth. Judge a reported truth with the truth and in prayer and supplication give God space to answer you in his word.

Let us pray,

G
RACIOUS heavenly Father, hear our prayers and answer them as you see fit; and also fill us with thy Spirit, that we might be made meet partakers with thy Son and our Saviour in his coming kingdom; for we ask them in his blessed name. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?
No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country
Our country has lost its way. Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take. Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them. Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God. Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down. Down, into the depths of the pit. Pray people will recognize there is:

• One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
• All religions are not equal;
• All ways of life are not equal;
• The Bible holds the Key to Life;
• All rights come from God, not the State;
• Good;
• Bad;
• Evil;
• Right;
• Wrong;
• Allah is the Devil;
• Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late. Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India. Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy. Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.
