Sunday Report

Today was the Third Sunday in Lent.

On Point
Someone asked, where do the quotes come from? The answer is from the people who uttered them. But, how did you find them? Oh, that. Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan. He always has some great ones to share. On to the On Point quotes –

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off. Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 128-130, with the Collect first:

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ This Collect is to be said every day in Lent, after the Collect appointed for the day, until Palm Sunday.

The Epistle for today comes from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, the Fifth Chapter, beginning at the First Verse. He echoes the advice of St. James in his general epistle to be Christians, not just claim to be followers of Christ, when James wrote, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

B
E ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

This morning’s Gospel comes from the Gospel of St. Luke, the Eleventh Chapter, beginning at the Fourteenth Verse.

J
ESUS was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: but when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Bishop Ogles’ Sermon
We are oft fortunate to get copies of Bishop Jerry’s sermon notes. Today is one of those Sundays. Today’s sermon starts off with the collect, and like always, it will give you a lot to consider in your heart.

The Holy Gospel
Luke 11:14-28

A
ND he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. 15 But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. 16 And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. 17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. 18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. 19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. 20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. 21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: 22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. 23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. 24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. 25 And when he cometh, he findeth itswept and garnished. 26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. 27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. 28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Let us take a look at two particular verses that are contained in the larger text, and as we read, keep these two verses uppermost in your minds:

21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: 22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

It is the nature of devils to possess us in obedience to their master, Satan. Demons do not always possess us in great alarm and demonstration, but often in quiet solitude.
Satan is not so much concerned with whether you go out and perform all manner of evil as much as he is concerned that you do not acknowledge Christ as your Sovereign Lord.

All of mankind have a sovereign. We are all born into the world as children of darkness. We are born ignorant of our condition and need of a Saviour from our rightful condemnation.

As we grow and learn, we begin to recognize that we are somehow incomplete. We cannot be the masters of our own fate and success or failure.

The opportunity of learning of Christ comes at the moments of greatest personal failure. When we are at the last knot in the rope which prevents our falling in the abyss, we then recognize, more than any other moment, that we need a power greater to, and outside of, ourselves to save us.

The Holy Spirit oftentimes warms our hearts to truth and knowledge, yet we are all too prone to reject those approaches over any long period. We offend the Holy Spirit finally when, after his appeals to us over and over are rejected, our ears become deadened to His constant beckoning. He still speaks, but our ears have drowned the Voice out. Thus we have placed our souls beyond the reach of the Holy Spirit and have become reprobate through our own habitual disregard.

This is the most tragic of all states.

Someone is standing by the Highway shouting “Bridge Out Ahead!” but we can no longer hear because we have been travelling too much through the playgrounds of the world and the noisy commotion of the world of sin has caused other sounds to seem muffled. We plunge ahead and perish in flames.

14 And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.

This was not a noisy devil, but a silent one. Yet, this devil possessed the man’s soul and heart. Had the dumb devil not been in possession of him, this man may have proclaimed wondrous words of truth to the world, but he could not. His heart was occupied by a devil!

Jesus worked a silent miracle that resulted in the gift of speech.

There are two ways to look at the miraculous works of God:

1. Wonder and Awe.
2. Jeers and accusations.

Some of the big name preachers of the day (Pharisees) claimed the power of Christ was the power of Beelzebub – Lord of the Flies. The larvae of flies on a dead carcass appeared to them to create a low form of life.

A third means is to tempt God to show a sign. The miracle is a sign unto itself.

In today’s churches, there is a clamour for signs and wonders, but listen to what Christ says:

38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. 39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Matthew 12 :39-40)

It is miracle enough that you have been born into the world, that you see the mighty works of God in Creation, and that Christ came and died a propitiatory death for you and me on the cross, and that he arose from the grave on the third day and ascended up into heaven in bodily form.

This is a matter of historical fact and not conjecture.

There are demons that wish to have possession of us. And those who have possession of the heart in strength, rest in peace for there is not challenge to their rule in your heart.

If you banish this devil from your heart under your own power, he will return to your swept and garnished heart with seven more and take illegal possession. We must invite a mighty King and a Warrior into our hearts over whom the demon will have no power, and there will be no place for him to come in.

21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: 22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. 24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. 25 And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. 26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

You may believe you occupy neutral ground in this battle between God and evil, but to do nothing is to stand on the side of evil: 23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth

Even our good intentions, uttered or performed without the truth and power of God are evil:

From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. 22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. 23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. (Matt 16:21-23)

Our best intentions, without God, are all hopeless. We may go to church, read the Bible occasionally, but we all fall short of the glory of God and we are all unrighteous.

6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him (Heb 6:11)

10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: (Romans 3:10)

The very moment we begin to feel that we are good and pleasing to God, this is the very moment we are not so. It is not our goodness that will gain the prize, but our humility and faith.

Place a strong and invincible presence in your heart and it will be safe. The only invincible power that exists is Christ. If we fill our hearts with Christ, full to the brim with His Holy Word (which He is), then will our hearts be safe from the invader who will place us into slavery.

Christ will free us. His is the perfect law of liberty whereby our goods will remain in peace. (James 1:25)

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)

If we would be free from the demons in our lives, let us take Jesus into our hearts, giving Him the fullness of every chamber, and then no enemy can take possession, and we will be free indeed.

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action
Church of the Faithful Centurion
Descanso, California
Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

Consider these words from the Collect:

… look upon the hearty desires of thy humble servants, and stretch forth the right hand of thy Majesty, to be our defence against all our enemies …

In the Collect, we ask God look in to our hearts, and see our desire to be His children and defend us against evil. That also means we are looking for His Help which comes in the form of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost will assist us in the process of changing of our hearts to actually have “hearty desires” to do His Will and to be “humble servants”, not our usual and customary self-centered selves. Quite a combination of thoughts in a small bit of verbiage! It is amazing how much we can put in a short sentence if we use words to their best advantage! If we will be follow Him, He will defend us in all assaults of our enemies. If we will not accept His Help, He will not force it on us. Back to that old, “Thy will be done.” The question arises once again, from whose mouth does it proceed, ours or God’s?

We need to desire God’s goodness to enter into our hearts, so we will be walking on the path towards God and not away from God. That means we need to become more like God as best we can and refrain from malicious, self-serving acts incongruent with Jesus’ message and need to instead embrace more Christ like behavior, and more loving our neighbors as ourselves. If that is indeed the backbone of the Law as Christ explained, then we should be focusing our energies on serving our neighbors and behaving in a Godly manner. While this seems like an impossible task, we do have heavenly help, that is the Holy Spirit.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel share the same theme. This theme is centered around action. In order to be a Christian, you have to act as a Christian and not just say we are. Saying we are Christians and actually being Christians are two different states of being. It is quite easy to say we are Christians, it is quite another to act like we are.

In his Epistle, Paul tells us in order to live out our faith, we need to make our actions match our stated desires, very much in line with the thought above. Actions! Not just Dictions, but Actions! There can be a distinct difference between the two. If you actually believe, you will act. If you just say you believe, you will not. There is a distinct difference between the two states, action and inaction. Faith requires action, unbelief is equal to the state of inaction.

There are too many people who claim to be Christian, yet do not actually act on the principles of Christ and follow His Instructions. They do not truly understand what it means to be a Christian. A Christian is called to a life of action and not just diction. To be Christian, we have to actually follow those said principles. The key word here is following or acting. Action is the central theme of the Christian faith, which was first shown with Christ’s death on the cross and resurrection. He came to act for us, not just to talk or meditate; His great plan involved action, though it was painful, it was His action which released us from the wages of sin. We have to follow His Example that He set for us and live our lives in a manner that reflects we believe the Gospel.

Think about the Gospel.

It is very important to be unified in our worship and maintain mutual support; a team always beats individuals. That is not to take away from individuality, but rather to note we need to remember whose side we are on and work together with our teammates. We have to remember that we need to utilize specific talents given to us by Our Lord to help further His Cause here on earth. In order to truly serve Him, we must be willing to put aside our old selves and truly accept the regeneration He offers us and become the New Man Paul talks about.

There are two phrases particularly worth remembering, “a house divided against a house falleth” and “He that is not with me is against me.” Middle ground exists, but it is quicksand. Eventually one has to choose a side. It is very clear to us what side we should choose. The only rational side to take is that of God, the side that will lead us to eternal life not that of eternal death.

And, we cannot keep with the opposition. It is the natural part of the history of the Bible and of life. We have to choose to follow God, as there is no other reasonable option, which will give us the result following God will result in. We must decide who we will follow. We do not have true faith if we do not act upon the words that our lips speak, of believing in Christ and His Father.

Christ himself came not to unite the world, but to divide it, father against son. In Matthew 10:32-34 He says “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.” He is saying here He has not come to unite the World, for the World is not on our side. But to clearly divide the world to show who is with God and who is against God. For as earlier explained, one man cannot serve two masters. And also the saying of where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. In this life by reading through Scripture we can easily tell who is for Him and who is against Him. It is simple, who holds to the principles of Scripture is for Him. They who do not hold to them are not with Him.

You must keep constant vigilance against backsliding, for a fallen Christian is in worse shape than one who was never exposed to The Word. In order to maintain the constant vigilance you have to always act upon your faith. The Epistle and Gospel both talk about the curious dichotomy; you are saved by faith, Jesus’s faith, and your faith alone saves you, not what you do; yet if you have faith, you must act on that faith.

To maintain your Christian course, you must truly turn a new leaf, and not slip back into the old man. This is one of the most difficult challenges as a Christian, but with the help of the Holy Ghost, we each can do it. You must receive the Word, hear it, and act upon it and spread it joyously to others, in order for your faith to have any meaning at all. Otherwise we will have been for the worse than if we never had heard the Good News. It is not a gift to selfishly lock up, but to share and give to others. That is the true joy of the Good News. It is most certainly more blessed to give than to receive in this case.

You must grasp your acceptance of Jesus Christ as your savior and your repentance is the beginning of your life as a New Man in Jesus.

Will you slip? Without doubt. But, when you do, will you again repent and continue to do your best to follow the Word of God, the Light and the Truth? All that matters is you get up and do your best not to do what you did to slip. Life is a continuous learning process. Indeed, if you are a Christian that is what you must do. We will always slip up in our lives, that is in our fallen nature. But we have to get up and get back on track, using the Holy Gospel to guide us like the instruments in an aircraft. We cannot trust our feeling, but only our instruments (God’s gift of Holy Scripture). You are called to believe and act on those beliefs to the best of your ability. If you do not, then prepared as you were for life, you will so be prepared for the pit. As you read Luke, remember the second half of the Book of Luke is The ACTS of the Apostles, not thoughts, wishes, prayers or meditations.

For, “blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.”

The Third Sunday in Lent.
The Collect.
W

E beseech thee, Almighty God, look upon the hearty desires of thy humble servants, and stretch forth the right hand of thy Majesty, to be our defence against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The first day of Lent, commonly called
Ash Wednesday.

A
LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ This Collect is to be said every day in Lent, after the Collect appointed for the day, until Palm Sunday.

Please take note of our three scripture selections for this third Sunday in Lent. They are all about light. Shining paths of light and righteousness, light and salvation, the light in the eye of a righteous person. What is so fascinating about light? It can penetrate all manner of darkness, it can bring great understanding during strange and perilous times. Light is what reveals the truth.

During this very confusing time of what appears to be cataclysmic events and chaos, the Light of the Gospel can and will dispel the darkness and evil that is being peddled as truth.

This message will be dated by the remarks and references made through out these words. There is a certain level of background hype and hysteria that is being pushed by the twenty-four hour news cycle. Every cable outlet, every major and for that matter minor news syndicate has only a certain amount of time to make money on the “bad” news that seems to ooze out of every possible “scientific” and “health” related source.

The truth is somewhere out there, we are just not getting all the facts about the truth.

1. Let us look at the truth of the Word of God. God is our light and salvation; whom shall I fear? As we re-read this 27th psalm we see over and over again where the Lord, the LORD, protects us against evil. Notice that it is both spiritual and physical. Yes there are issues of people being harmed and even dying from the current virus, but if you are in the house of the Lord, what does it matter? This world is not our home. Get it? This world is not our home, we are just passing through. Now mind you, that doesn’t mean we don’t reach out and help someone in need or distress, but we are not to pin all our hopes on this temporal world.

Do you not see that this is one of the main tenets of communism and socialism? “This is all there is, there is no heaven or hell, all is here, all that you get and will get is here”. It is this mantra that is used to stir up the ignorant and the faithless. They are told that there is no future, there is no life after death, that this is all you get….so you better rise up and get it. The way the Marxist can justify destructive revolution is to stir the masses into total anarchy and take down the system in place.

So stop putting your hope in this temporal world. It is doomed. One day it will be wiped away, replaced with a new heaven and earth, one that is perfect just like the Garden before sin entered it through Adam and Eve.

2. As David wrote so many generations ago, we are to seek the face of the Lord. We are to call unto, in fact cry unto Him for mercy and help. Are we?

He will not leave or forsake us. It is promised. Seek God while He may be found.

Do we turn off the news and constant babbling on tv, internet, or how ever we receive that news and see the Lord? It is time to turn from the world’s idea of peace and security and look to the Lord.

Now, as we have heard or read in Bishop Jerry’s letter to the churches, we don’t throw caution to the wind, but we also exercise some common sense.

Remember, these are the same news sources that tell us every year we are going to experience the worse winter weather in modern memory. What is said when that doesn’t happen? Crickets.

Hype gets ratings, hype sells copy, hype keeps people coming back for more bad news, every minute every day. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. So shouldn’t this be our response ? Turn the darkness away with the Light. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

And because He is our light…

And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD. Let us sing praises unto the LORD.

3. And even when it seems the whole world is against us and has what appears to be the answers to the chaos please remember the words of David: When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up. Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty. Do not be troubled: Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. And most importantly during this time of induced chaos and confusion remember these words: Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

And now a final word about light as it dispels darkness. Let us turn to the Gospel reading today from St. Luke:

N
O man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

Luke’s Gospel is today’s most important message. We are to be the Light for the world. We are to reflect and shine the light of truth, the light that has no dealing with darkness, the light that the world so desperately needs at this time, with a crisis or without a crisis, the world is going to hell because it doesn’t have the Light.

Are we being that Light? Let us ask the Lord to make us a light unto the world during this very confusing time. Let the peace of the Lord and the Light of the Word be a part of our life and that it would be revealed to this dying world today.

Let us pray:

O
ALMIGHTY God the Lord of life anti death, of health and sickness; Have pity upon us miserable sinners, now visited with great sickness [and mortality]. Withdraw from us this grievous affliction. Sanctify to us, we beseech thee, this thy fatherly correction. Enlarge our charity to relieve those who need our help. Bless the remedies applied to assist them. Give us prudence to see, and vigour to use, those means which thy providence affords, for preventing and alleviating such calamities. And, above all, teach us to know how frail and uncertain our condition is, and so to number our days, that we may seriously apply our hearts to that holy and heavenly wisdom, whilst we live here, which may in the end bring us to life everlasting; through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ, thine only Son our Lord. Amen.

O
GOD, merciful Father, that despisest not the sighing of a contrite heart, nor the desire of such as be sorrowful; Mercifully assist our prayers that we make before thee in all our troubles and adversities, whensoever they oppress us; and graciously hear us, that those evils, which the craft and subtilty of the devil or man worketh against us, be brought to nought; and by the providence of thy good ness they may be dispersed; that we thy servants, being hurt by no persecutions, may evermore give thanks unto thee in thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O
MOST mighty God, and merciful Father, who hast compassion upon all men, and hatest nothing that shod hast made; who wouldest not the death of a sinner, but that he should rather turn from his sin, and be saved; Mercifully forgive us our trespasses; receive and comfort us, who are grieved and wearied with the burden of our sins. Thy property is always to have mercy; to thee only it appertaineth to forgive sins. Spare us therefore, good Lord, spare thy people, whom thou hast redeemed; enter not into judgement with thy servants, who are vile earth, and miserable sinners; but so turn thine anger from us, who meekly acknowledge our vileness, and truly repent us of our faults and so make haste to help us in this world, that we may ever live with thee in the world to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

T
HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon
We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon. If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth. This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Third Sunday in Lent

In today’s Gospel, our Lord replied to woman who had said that his mother was blessed for having birthed him, Yea, rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it (St. Luke 11:27-28). Our faith in Christ is made manifest by our obedience to his word and commandment. It does no good to say, “I believe in God” or “I believe in Christ” and then do nothing in his service. We must not only hear the word of God, but we must keep it.

Consider now the words of our Lord who said, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. Which of you convinceth me of sin. And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God (John 8:42-47). He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life (John 5:24).

Do you see the distinction being drawn? There were two groups: the unregenerate masses who belong to our adversary, and a believing remnant who are of God. The unregenerate are the children of disobedience as noted in today’s epistle (Ephesians 5:6). They do not understand the words of Christ because they cannot hear them. As the apostle Paul explained, But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is image of God, should shine unto them (II Corinthians 4:3-4). The remnant, on the other hand, hear the words of Christ and accept them as truth, and they will seek to honor God through their obedience to his word and commandment. As St. John noted in his first epistle, … he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in [Christ] and [Christ] in him… hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us (3:24). Ergo, all who have been born again of the Holy Ghost will live in obedience to God’s will which excludes those behaviors that are identified in Scripture as the works of the flesh.

And what are the works of the flesh? The apostle Paul warned us to, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). Further on in the same chapter he described them in detail when he wrote: Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft [sorcery], hatred, variance [contentiousness], emulations [jealousy], wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like, of the which I tell you before, as I have told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21).

For some, the above passages are difficult to hear much less adhere to in their daily lives. The new bible versions soften some of the words used in the Authorized Version such as substituting a phrase “sexual immorality” for the word, fornication. As researcher G. A. Riplinger once observed concerning the swap, “In the battle between man’s mores and God’s laws, the new versions have opted for the ‘popular’ morals of the day. They have substituted the relativistic word ‘immorality’ for the word ‘fornication’. The word ‘immorality‘ carries with it no description of what is forbidden. Webster elaborates:’ Immorality: State or quality of being immoral. Immoral: Not moral. Fornication: Illicit sexual intercourse on the part of an unmarried person.’” I ask you: Which word supplies the clearer warning? Now God did not give us his word as a draft for our approval, so either one accepts God’s word written, or one will, by default, be in rejection of it. There are no exceptions.

St. Paul wrote extensively on the Christian ethos. He knew what it meant to join “the dark side” as he had once been an ignorant tool of the devil prior to his conversion (Acts 9:1-20). But after he accepted Christ as his Saviour and Lord, the apostle proved to be a passionate and successful minister of the gospel.

Sadly, an increasing number of those in leadership within the various denominations have sought to diminish St. Paul’s credibility as a messenger of our Lord, and these should “stand and deliver” by answering the following questions:

1) Who, pray tell, appeared to Saul of Tarsus on that dusty road to Damascus?
2) With whom did the apostle commune in the wilderness of Arabia for some three years?
3) If the apostle was truly called of our Lord on that dusty road so long ago, then how on earth can any so-called Christian disparage him without being labeled a false teacher or an apostate?

Consider the scope and detail of the apostle’s works. His epistles contain the rubrics for church order and worship. He was called to supply form to the substance— to flesh out the specifics of what it means to have a church. He was called to preach and be heard of the remnant that they might be saved by the effectual working of the Holy Ghost. Thus to deny the credentials of the last apostle is to in effect close one’s ears to the gospel of truth that he preached, and which was recorded for our edification in his epistles.
So what have those wayward churches and pastors gotten in exchange for their efforts? They have, in essence, traded away the true gospel for another gospel and a curse (Galatians 1:6-9). For in their acceptance of that which is false by every biblical standard, they have slain the concept of biblical inerrancy in the hearts and minds of their congregants. They have become cultists who gather around a figment of Christ, but not the only begotten Son of the Father. Such a belief has been labeled in Scripture as the spirit of antichrist which has been sown by Satan throughout the world since our Lord’s first advent (I St. John 2:18-23 and 4:1-6). And so it is on account of this evil spiritual presence that our Lord has been forced to stand outside their church doors knocking to enter not only their assemblies but their hearts (Revelation 3:20).

Bishop Ryle once wrote concerning these last days, “…that the world will never be completely converted to Christianity by any existing agency, before the end comes. In spite of all that can be done by ministers, churches, schools and missions, the wheat and the tares will grow together until the harvest; and when the end comes, it will find the earth in much the same state that it was when the flood came in the days of Noah (St. Matthew 13:24-30; 24:37-39)… [and] that the widespread unbelief, indifference, formalism and wickedness, which are to be seen throughout Christendom, are only what we are taught to expect in God’s Word. Troublous times, departures from the faith, evil men waxing worse and worse, love waxing cold, are things distinctly predicted.” Our Lord said of Noah’s time that, … as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be (St. Matthew 24:37-39).

Now look at the spiritual condition of humanity as described in Genesis 6:

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually (v.5). St. Paul noted in his second epistle to St. Timothy that, …in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves… unthankful, unholy… lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof… (vv.2-5). The apostle also forewarned that the church would experience apostasy prior to the return of our Lord. Consider his words in II Thessalonians 2: We beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, that ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be reveal, the son of perdition (vv.1-3). It will be that man of sin who will use a great deception to cloud the minds of the unregenerated so that they will not turn unto Christ and be saved (II Thessalonians 2:7-12).

The LORD informed the prophet Isaiah that his message to the people would not be received and believed (6:9-13). It was a message meant for those who would hear even though they were few. God is interested in proclaiming the truth to all, but he knows that only a small segment of those who will hear will believe and turn unto him. They are the remnant. To quote Bishop Ryle once more: “I believe the grand purpose of the present dispensation is to gather out of the world an elect people, and not convert all mankind. It does not surprise me at all to hear that the heathen are not all converted when missionaries preach, and that believers are but a little flock in any congregation in my own land… The gospel is to be preached as a witness, and then the end shall come. This is the dispensation of election, not universal conversion.”

And so it has been the solemn duty of every faithful Christian to be salt and light in this sin-darkened world regardless of whether or not the masses accept our witness. As St. Paul wrote, knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men (II Corinthians 5:11). In that vein, we should pray for God’s gift of faith to be spread abroad, and that God would bring a spirit of revival into the world in these last days. The power of praying Christians is infinite, for the Lord we serve is a mighty and sovereign God who cares for us and hears us. St. James tells us in his epistle that the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much (5:16).

St. Paul reminded young Timothy in his second epistle: And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will (2:25-26). Though many will perish, still we ought to pray for the unregenerate around us. Our duty is to give them the gospel of truth, to give it to them straight, and to keep giving it to them as God gives us the occasion so to do.

We close our worship of both Morning and Evening Prayer with A Prayer of St. Chrysostom which states in part, “Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them…” We may not always understand why God acts, or does not act in a particular matter for which we have petitioned him. Nevertheless, we can rest assured that in his love for us he will hear us. To that end, let us close with an excerpt from St. John 10:14, I am the good shepherd and know my sheep, and am known of mine. For the Remnant, those are most comfortable words indeed, so let us work to expand the Remnant as God gives us the leave to do in his service so that more will indeed hear and be obedient to God’s word and commandment.

Let us pray,

O
GOOD and gracious God, whose everlasting purpose has been to redeem thine elect saints from thy wrath to come, and to bring us into thy rest; assist us we pray, that by the power of the Holy Ghost, we would be made a people fit not only for our work here, as well as in thy coming kingdom; all of which we ask in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?
No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Birthdays
Amy Jamieson celebrated her 44th birthday on 22 February 2020.
Dru Arnold celebrated her 65th birthday on 2 February 2020, the day when she wakes up, goes outside and if she sees her shadow, six more weeks of winter. The bright blue completely clear skies provided a brilliant sharp shadow. Six more weeks of winter! On the other hand, given we are in Southern California, six more weeks of winter is not much of a threat.

Departed
Miguel Madera left this earth for home in the early morning hours of 8 March 2020. He was newly appointed as Bishop of Argentina and South America.

Bishop Madera was a strong man of God who was a staunch defender of the Reformation Faith and that “Gospel once delivered to the saints” a friend and brother. Our plans were large for his future labors in the Anglican Orthodox Communion, but God’s ways are not our ways, and His thoughts not our thoughts. Our Lord does all things well and we shall understand in the sweet by-and-by.

Our prayers are now for the comfort and consolation of the beloved family which Bishop Madera leaves behind. He loved them with the tender love that exemplifies every husband and father who recognizes his duty to God and family.

For Our Country
Our country has lost its way. Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take. Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them. Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down. Down, into the depths of the pit. Pray people will recognize there is:

• One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
• All religions are not equal;
• All ways of life are not equal;
• The Bible holds the Key to Life;
• All rights come from God, not the State;
• Good;
• Bad;
• Evil;
• Right;
• Wrong;
• Allah is the Devil;
• Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late. Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India. Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy. Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

Thanksgiving
Bryan Alford has been declared free of cancer at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas, even though he was Stage Four at beginning of treatment. He acknowledges all praise belongs to God and those who held him up in prayer.
