Sunday Report

Today was the feast of Saint Luke the Evangelist superseding the Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity as the Endless Green Season is interrupted by a feast!!

On Point
Someone asked, where do the quotes come from? The answer is from the people who uttered them. But, how did you find them? Oh, that. Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan. He always has some great ones to share. On to the On Point quotes –

To Mary Willis Shelburne: On how to rehearse for death and how to diminish fear.

17 June 1963

Pain is terrible, but surely you need not have fear as well? Can you not see death as the friend and deliverer? It means stripping off that body which is tormenting you: like taking off a hair- shirt or getting out of a dungeon. What is there to be afraid of? You have long attempted (and none of us does more) a Christian life. Your sins are confessed and absolved. Has this world been so kind to you that you should leave it with regret? There are better things ahead than any we leave behind.

Remember, though we struggle against things because we are afraid of them, it is often the other way round—we get afraid be- cause we struggle. Are you struggling, resisting? Don’t you think Our Lord says to you ‘Peace, child, peace. Relax. Let go. Underneath are the everlasting arms. Let go, I will catch you. Do you trust me so little?’

Of course, this may not be the end. Then make it a good rehearsal.

Yours (and like you a tired traveller near the journey’s end) Jack

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off. Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 253-254, with the Collect first:

ATCH thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: for Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works: of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words.

HE Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire.

Saint Luke the Evangelist. [October 18.]
The Collect.

A
LMIGHTY God, who didst inspire thy servant Saint Luke the Physician, to set forth in the Gospel the love and healing power of thy Son; Manifest in thy Church the like power and love, to the healing of our bodies and our souls; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect.

Due to his particular calling as a physician, the Lord inspired Luke to accent the whole healing benefits available in Christ. The only healing that will suffice for the soul is offered in the Gospel of Christ that Luke so skillfully presents. Luke advocates the same role of the church of healing the whole body and soul of its adherents in Christ. All power vested in the Church remains that delegated authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Luke is known as the Beloved Physician for that was his practice. It is true that Luke is beloved of all Christians, and it is true that Luke was a physician administering the healing arts; but more important than these characteristics stands the claim of Christian professor. All of the other pursuits of Luke’s life was directed toward the propagation of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, and Luke shared his writings in such a manner as to emphasize the compassion and healing power of His Lord. Being a physician by trade, he was able to capture the absolute and miraculous healing power of our Lord. Not only could the Lord heal from every disease and even call back the dead to life, but He could heal the greatest affliction of all mankind in the forgiveness of sin.
Owing to his practiced understanding of medicine, Luke is very precise in his descriptive writings of diseases healed by our Lord, but that precision of terms spills over into all of Luke’s other writings. Luke wrote more in the New Testament than any other (including Peter). He also authored the Book of Acts. Luke recorded that latter historical book of the New Testament with the same attention to detail as he paid to all his writings of the miracles of Christ.

The Collect.

O
GOD, forasmuch as without thee we are not able to please thee; Mercifully grant that thy Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect for the Day
This Gelasian Collect was translated by Archbishop Cranmer to say “grant us thy grace to avoid the temptations of the world, etc” but the learned revisers of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer made the seemingly small change to read: “grant us they grace to withstand the temptations of the world, etc”. Though the change of a single word may seem trivial, it is not, for we shall certainly encounter the temptations of the world. They cannot be avoided and are often allowed by the Lord for our preparation as courageous people of God.

How do we “withstand the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil?” How do we withstand the several diseases of the physical world? First, and most desirable, is that we are inoculated to be immune from those diseases that threaten our physical health. Secondly, there are some diseases for which there is no vaccine and for which we must receive prompt attention. The temptations of the world to our souls are of a similar nature. The Devil seeks to infect us with the disease of sin. If he is successful, a diseased sinner becomes one who carries his contagion into the presence of all with whom he associates. Sin, like wild weeds, spreads across the landscape without cultivation or tillage. It is not the weeds, but the good grass, vegetables and fruits that need careful watering, fertilization, and tillage.

Is it possible to be immune to some of the Devil’s temptations? By all means, it is possible! The best immunity is the avoidance of diseased environments. If we restrain from close familiarity with those who are constantly driven to lust and sinful inclinations, we shall avoid those direct temptations foisted upon those who do so associate with the friends of the world and of the Devil. But there are temptations that lie dormant deep in the heart of man that will emerge from time to time in spite of Godly love and zeal. How are these temptations confronted and defeated? By watchfulness in guarding the soul, and in constant prayerfulness, we may withstand those strong and ungodly temptations that arise in the heart of every Christian: And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. (Mark 14:37-38)

If we are strong in prayer, and watchful against that old Adversary of our souls, he will elect to bring his greater temptations to bear elsewhere. When Christ is the sole owner of our hearts, no other shall dare to invade those sacred chambers of the Temple of God. We shall be stronger than the Devil and all of his cunning traps if we have the One in our hearts who has handily defeated that old Dragon. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. (Luke 11:21-22)

“ . . . with pure hearts and minds to follow thee, the only God; through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Sin is dirty. It changes our countenance of purity into a grimy image of filth. It makes us sick and we lose the energy to perform good service to God and man; and we gain a greater desire to go to the saloon of Satan for more of the “hair from the dog that bit us.” We track our filth everywhere we go. One little ‘white’ lie about a friend (or even a stranger) may circulate among the multitudes until that person’s character and reputation are savaged. One promiscuous encounter can ruin a marriage and the lives of children. An aged parent, dishonored, carries that testimony directly to the face of Christ when he departs this life. Sin has consequences that are often irreparable.

Satan is not omniscient, but he does have a mind and the means of observation. He has learned the weaknesses in our defenses. He has watched intently as we have prepared our lines. He knows where the walls of our souls are weak and unprotected. It is at these points that he concentrates his forces and makes his assaults. If he is able to penetrate our defenses, even at the weak points, he gains command of the battlefield in rendering even our strong defense impotent. He has outmaneuvered our flanks and gained a tactical access to our innermost deployments of battle. When our lines are overrun, we have only the option to call upon our reserves – hidden and unseen to the enemy. If that reserve is God Almighty, He will expeditiously rout the unwelcome enemy from our ranks, strengthen our interior lines, and restore order on our outward defenses.

What one vaccine has the greatest effect in dispelling the sinful nature? With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. (Psalm 119:10-11) We defeat the wiles of the Devil by seeking the Lord with our WHOLE HEART, then there remains no faculties free to contemplate sin. We hide God’s Whole Counsel in our hearts which is a defense and a fortress against sin. A casual piety will not do – it is the whole being that must belong to God – the Heart, the Mind, the Soul! Is your faith a casual faith, or does God own your soul – lock, stock, and barrel, Friend? If Christ is the SOVEREIGN of your heart, no enemy can take possession of it.

Is He?

The Gospel.
St. Luke x. 1.

T

In today’s text for the observance of St. Luke the Evangelist, we see the first part of a bipartite nature of the Gospel. Christ sends his disciples out in two’s: “Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.” Is the Christian required to go among wolves in such a way throughout his calling? Why did the Lord send these men out in such manner? The Lord Himself answers that question: “The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.” The Harvest is already ripened and ready to take. The ground has been prepared and the wheat grains are heavy. So Christ sends forth these to prepare for His reception on His coming to them: “THE Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place,whither he himself would come.”

“And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire.” This is not the manner of performing our mission work today in hostile lands. God desires that we have courage to go forth wherever He sends, and in such manner as He sends us, but we are not facing the same Providential circumstances as that to which our Lord makes reference in this lesson text. It would be foolish for the Christian missionary to go among ISIS – known demonic servants of the devil, to attempt conversions. He does not desire we waste our lives foolishly. But in the case presented here, the fields were ripe for Harvest and need laborers there.

We must remember that it was the same Luke who scribed the caution our Lord gave His on the night of His betrayal: “31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. 33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. 34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. 35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. 36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.”

I hope you will have noted the contrasts in these two circumstances: the first was to lay the foundation for the reception of the Gospel; the second was to preserve His disciples from danger of death. He would be taken for crucifixion this very night. He did not desire his disciples as well to suffer death. The swords were not for protection of Christ for He must be offered up. They were for the protection of the disciples.

That night, the brash Peter drew a sword and severed the ear of one of the soldiers. Peter was trying to protect Christ from danger, but that was not the Lord’s intention. Observe the great courage of Peter in the near Presence of the Lord; but also observe his cowardice in the face of the accusations made that he was a follower of Christ when he was separated from the Lord. “50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. 51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.”

Jesus intended that the offense against Himself was to be allowed, but the disciples were to only protect THEMSELVES. “Suffer ye THUS FAR!”

But, being separated from His Lord, see how Peter’s courage failed him: “54 ¶ Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off. 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. 57 And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. 58 And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. 59 And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilæan. 60 And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. 61 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. 62 And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.”

We are in the time of the Church Militant. We are not to do as the Muslims do, that is, advance the faith of Christ at the point of the sword, but our Lord has given us the right and responsibility to defend ourselves against a malicious enemy. A dead Christian can no longer be of benefit to the lost. We owe an obligation to defend our families, our church, and our nation.

Jesus commanded his disciples at the last minute before His being taken in the Garden to buy a sword if they did not have a sword. He declared that command, not to defend Himself, but His disciples on that night of danger. We should feel the responsibility and obligation as well. Any man who would allow his child, wife, home, or nation to be abused by an evil and wicked invader is neither man nor Christian.

Sermon – Rev Jack Arnold
Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California
Today’s sermon tied the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and talked, as is oft the case, of the need for action, not simply diction.

Consider the words of the Collect, “… inspire thy servant Saint Luke the Physician, to set forth in the Gospel the love and healing power of thy Son; Manifest in thy Church the like power and love, to the healing of our bodies and our souls …”

The Collect asks God to inspire us, that is His “Church”, through the intervention and help of the Holy Ghost, to accept the love and healing power of His Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that like Luke and those he touched, we might have our broken bodies and souls made whole.

This is such a familiar theme, asking God to help us come to know Him and His Help, the Holy Ghost. Without His guidance, we really can do nothing in the end that is right. What seems right to us always ends up in the swamp. We need to recognize the need before we can benefit from the help He can give us. We need to ask for help, then when it is delivered to recognize and accept it. The healing that comes from Christ can only happen if we are willing and able to listen to Him and to let Him into our hearts and minds. He does not come in to those who do not want to receive Him. We have to make it our desire to let Him in.

Paul is truly our ultimate example of God’s Power and Grace. Paul, Chief Persecutor of the early Church, “saw the light” on the “Road to Damascus.” God chose Paul from amongst all the men walking the earth at the time to use his talents to further God’s purpose on earth. An interesting paradox is that the closer you come to God, the more you appreciate how much separates you from His Godly Perfection, the more you realize your shortcomings. In time you will find that your life will have a purpose to it that cannot be defeated, for in the end, you are on the winning side, that of God’s eternal light. If you do your very best for Him on this earth, with your life, you will have a wonderful eternal reward for Him. It is a pretty powerful motivator that we need to remind ourselves of, more often.

So, when Paul writes to his beloved assistant, helper and fellow minister of the Gospel, Timothy, near the end of Paul’s time here on earth, he is trying to help him with earthly things and motivate Timothy to continue his work in the event they join not again here on earth . He tells Timothy to spread the Word of God, to be prepared to endure persecution and affliction for the sake of the Word. He notes that of all his followers or close companions only Luke remains with him. Thus, when we despair of low numbers in our churches, we should remember Paul. If Paul, arguably the greatest mind of all those who put God’s Word to pen, could not keep everyone in God’s Word, why should we expect such a differing result. The big thing for Paul, and us, is don’t give up . You cannot win if you give up and you cannot lose the war if you do not give up.

At times, it does not seem easy to not give up, with what seems like depressing news at every turn, but we cannot lose that hope eternal, that Christ gives us. We have to look to the Holy Spirit and His Word to strengthen us and encourage us, to enable us to fight the good fight with all that we have. We have to remember that as long as we do not give up, in the end God’s Side, and thus our side, wins the battle.

Not everything in life went smoothly for Paul, why would we expect it to be different for us? Life is not always smooth sailing, there will be times when we encounter severe turbulence in our life. But with God’s help we will and must ride out the turbulence. Like real turbulence, it is only temporary. Once we get passed it, it will smooth out. But there will be periods that are quite turbulent. We just have to remember to ask for God’s help to get through those turbulent times. When we pray for help from God via the Holy Ghost, we pray for understanding, comfort, strength, patience, perseverance. We are like iron, forged under fire, our character in faith is built with the hammering blows of life that are dealt upon us, to make us stronger people of God.

If you think everything is against us, you are not right, but a lot is. There are many Alexander the Coppersmiths these days. We must strive not to be Alexanders, but to be more like Timothys. There are plenty of bad examples to go around, let us strive to be good examples, as much as we have it in us to be, and with the help of the Holy Ghost.

When Luke tells us of the Lord sending his representatives throughout the area which He Himself would travel, he is writing not only of ordained clergy or ministers, but of each of us. We, each and every one of us, have a mission here on earth to Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God (Isaiah 40:3b), for truly, we are The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness (Isaiah 40:3a). Yet, we cannot save people by bringing them to God, only He can do that. But, we can tell them of Him and pray for the Holy Ghost to act on their hearts. We seldom know what effect our work has, yet we must do it.

When we bring the Word of God to people, it is not often accepted these days, for the forces of this world are very, very strong on people’s hearts. The riches of this world blind people to their true poverty. If the Word is not accepted, we merely move on. Luke also tells us ministers of God should be supported by their congregations to the extent of their needs.

This has a two fold purpose:

1. If people do not pay for something, they oft have little regard for its value. You can see the result of that in public housing.
2. To the extent ministers of the Gospel devote their time to the Word, they do not have the ability to otherwise earn their living. Balanced against this is the fact that the hire the laborer was worthy of was to meet their needs, nothing more.

In the Anglican Orthodox Church of the United States, we have no paid ministers. This is because we are small, we have experienced ministers who have planned their lives to allow them to serve the Lord on their own dime, so to speak. We must guard against this world entering our Church. We are to be in the world, not of the world. It is a very fine line, that at times is difficult to see, but it must be seen and not crossed into the of the world, but yet remain in the world and engaged in the fight under our Lord’s banner.

Yet, this is more than just about “ordained ministers of the Gospel”, each of us must prepare the way for the Lord. We are truly in a wilderness today. The cares and riches of this world, for we live in the richest (in earthly terms) time ever, drag us away from the Word of God. Each Christian must live their life as Christ taught, acting as a Beacon of Light, shining His Light into the world that others might see that Light and be drawn to it.

Thus the Collect, Epistle and Gospel tie together, laying out, detailing and reinforcing the same message ultimately. We have to ready and willing to listen to God, and walk in God, and act with the Holy Spirit in us, in order to enter into the kingdom of heaven and bring those around us with us. We cannot point people to God, we must lead them .

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail. The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow. The time has come, indeed. How will you ACT?

The time to act is NOW. Will you act? For whom will you act? Will you count the cost before you act?

Action, not diction, is what counts. It is by your actions you are known.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

The Collect.

O
GOD, forasmuch as without thee we are not able to please thee; Mercifully grant that thy Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A good biography can be an excellent source of inspiration and motivation. When one is able to read about the challenges and obstacles that an individual overcame to become the person they eventually would be; it gives the reader a sense of hope and even a possible guideline to the future. A good biography can do that. With this in mind what do we know about Luke, the Evangelist? It seems that there is scant complete information about Luke, with a few glimpses of a man from Antioch. Luke is mentioned as a missionary traveling with Paul, he is referred to as “a or the beloved physician”. But other than a few other comments made about who was possibly Luke or Saint Luke, there isn’t much else. Several later early church fathers mention Luke as having done some writing and performed some miraculous healing, but again, scant information.

So, let us look at the record as we understand it, the writings ascribed to Luke, the Evangelist.

The third gospel and the Book of Acts of the Apostles both were authored by Luke. The style, the correct Greek grammar, the attention to detail, all marks of a well educated man, seem to give rise to this authorship. As a trained physician, Luke would have had extensive training on looking for detail, clues to an illness, noticing many small facts or such that would indicate an illness or malady.

This attention to detail is noted in the detailed writing of the Gospel of Luke and in the Acts of the Apostles. Several modern scholars have noted that the geographic and social details written down, especially in Acts, are of the highest caliber of historic record.

The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

As we just heard, the first part of chapter one of Acts, where there is so much attention to detail and also a direct charge to the believers in Jerusalem and to us too. They {we} are to be a witness of Christ Jesus and who He is, to the uttermost parts of the earth. This is quite a responsibility. Now this is both a home and abroad responsibility, Jerusalem {home} and uttermost parts {abroad}, meaning that the message of the Gospel is universal. It is to be shared everywhere.

As we reflect on Luke’s life, we should see if there is a way for us to model our lives on his oh so many centuries ago. Please understand, that we are not trying to be the super heros of the New Testament. No, we should just try to use the example of those who came before us in our day to day lives, using their lives as an example of how to live our lives to the honor and glory of our God. The point of a good biography.

In many ways, we too, can be an example to those who will follow after our time. We should be a good biography for young believers coming up through the ages.

Now let us read what the prophet Isaiah wrote about those who bring the good tidings {Gospel} to the world.

OW beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! 8Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion. 9 Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. 10 The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

In Verse Ten we again see the universal sharing of the message of God’s salvation. In Isaiah chapter 6:8 we read: Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

Are we willing, are we able, are we ready, are we doing all we can to further the Kingdom of God?

Let us pray:

O
GOD, who providest for thy people by thy power, and rulest over them in love; Vouchsafe so to bless thy servant our president, that under him this nation may be wisely governed, and thy Church may serve thee in all godly quietness; and grant that he, being devoted to thee with his whole heart, and persevering in good works unto the end, may, by thy guidance, come to thine everlasting kingdom; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever one God, world without end. Amen.

A
LMIGHTY God, the fountain of all wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask, and our ignorance in asking; We beseech thee to have compassion upon our infirmities; and those things, which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot, ask, vouchsafe to give us, for the worthiness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O
ALMIGHTY God, and heavenly Father, we glorify thee that thou hast again fulfilled to us thy gracious promise, that, while the earth remaineth, seed-time and harvest shall not fail. We bless thee for the kindly fruits of the earth, which thou hast given to our use. Teach us, we beseech thee, to remember that it is not by bread alone that man doth live; and grant us evermore to feed on him who is the true Bread from heaven, Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

T
HE blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon
We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon. If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth. This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity

In his epistle to the people of Ephesus, the apostle Paul called on the brethren to put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness (Ephesians 4:22-24). If we truly love the Lord, we will seek daily to become that new being of which the apostle spoke.

And in that vein, let us examine our Lord’s comment to Nicodemus: Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3). After which the older man questioned, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born ( St. John 3:4)? Our Lord explained that being born again was not to be understood in a literal sense, but rather in a figurative one. It is a spiritual rebirth accomplished in Christ Jesus by means of a person’s belief in him as God’s only begotten Son (John 3:16). The first thing that must be done to begin this process of Christian renewal would be to embrace Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.

Consider the question of the Philippian jailer to Paul and Silas, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? (Acts 16:30) To which they replied, Believe on the Lord Jesus , and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. (Acts 16:31) The jailer was fearful on account of the earthquake which had damaged the jail as well as the thought that his prisoners might have escaped. Had he taken into account his sinful nature? The Bible tells us nothing about that, but it tells us of his fervent desire to be saved.

In an earlier chapter in Ephesians (1:13-14), Paul explained the process of our coming to embrace Christ and be received of him. First came the hearing of the word of truth in which the members of the church at Ephesus had placed their trust. They were willing to hear and to receive the gospel of salvation after which they believed and were sealed with the holy Spirit of promise which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession. Paul noted earlier God has predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself… (1:5), and on that account we have received redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace (v.7) All of this has been part of God’s intention that in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ… (v.10) For it is in Christ Jesus that we have obtained an inheritance… (v.11), and that inheritance is eternal life in his kingdom.

The Bible tells us once we have accepted Christ as our Lord and Saviour we cannot fall out of the Master’s hand. Still, there is no shortage of individuals who claim to know our Lord but have not accepted him into their lives. The parable of “The Sower” described people as being like four types of soil into which the seed of the word is cast. Sadly, for those in the first three types, they never bore any fruit in his service. And when faced with trial or tribulation, such persons abandoned their profession of faith and returned to their old ways of living (Matthew 13:20-22). Our Lord regards these superficial Christians— Christians in name only— as unsaved persons. For if they had possessed a saving faith in our Lord, they would not have fallen away from him. The true children of God will avoid entangling themselves again with the things of the world, the flesh, and the Devil because they have renounced them. The wonderful hymn by Mrs. Cecil F. Alexander entitled “Jesus Calls Us O’er the Tumult” has a verse which is apropos: “Jesus calls from the worship of the vain world’s golden store; from each idol that would keep us, saying, ‘Christian, love me more.’”

There is no room for duplicity. We cannot keep to our former corrupted states and hold onto Christ. For in such a spiritual condition, we would be unable to take hold of his hand without slipping out precisely on account of our sinfulness. Ridding ourselves of our old natures is imperative if we are serious about being received into God’s family. Our Lord said, No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (Matthew 6:24)

In the Ministration of Holy Baptism concerning adults, I will ask the person seeking this sacrament the following question: “Dost thou renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all covetous desires of the same, and the sinful desires of the flesh, so that thou wilt not follow, nor be led by them?” The candidate’s answer is: “I renounce them all; and by God’s help, will endeavour not to follow, nor be led by them.” So it follows that believers ought to be renewed in the spirit of their minds.

In sum, what have we learned about ourselves as born-again Christians?

Firstly, that our new man is born again— born from above— and is not of the flesh but of the Spirit. We also learned that as believers we are cognizant of the sins of our old life and as a result, we will seek to avoid them in the future. We understand that our old life ended via the baptism of the Spirit, and from that moment we became new creatures in Christ Jesus. We further understand that our new man does not change physically so much as we change spiritually. That is the real change— the change which will keep us on the strait and narrow way. As the apostle Paul has written concerning this new state of being, But God who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) and hath raised us up together, and made us to sit in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:4-6).We have been quickened, that is, made alive, in the spirit and bearing the promise that we will one day be made alive eternally in a new body which will be like that of our Lord and Saviour.

It is therefore of the greatest importance for every Christian to embrace a biblical understanding of our salvation in Christ. For only through a true and abiding faith in him as the only begotten Son of God can such be obtained. For only in his name and under his blood do we receive his free gift of grace. And only by the confession of our sins to God the Father in his name do we receive forgiveness of them.

I pray each of you will seek to be made right with God today through his free gift of grace in Christ our Lord. And, that if you have not done so, that you will turn from your sinful life of the old man and put on the new man in Jesus Christ. Do not wait for tomorrow as it is promised to no one. Come to Christ today.

Let us pray,

O
LORD, we pray that in these last days you will impress upon the hearts of all who are as yet outside of your hedge of protection, the need to be regenerated— born again of thy most holy Spirit— and that they will indeed turn unto thee and be saved; for this we ask in the name of thy dear Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?
No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Corona Virus
With most of the world on some form of restriction, we ask you pray for the governments be guided into appropriate reaction and scientists find cures and vaccines and that the virus pass each of us by.

Down, into the depths of the pit. Pray people will recognize there is:

• One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
• All religions are not equal;
• All ways of life are not equal;
• The Bible holds the Key to Life;
• All rights come from God, not the State;
• Good;
• Bad;
• Evil;
• Right;
• Wrong;
• Allah is the Devil;
• Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late. Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.
