Third Sunday after the Epiphany
Sunday Report
Today was the Third Sunday after the Epiphany.
On Point
Someone asked, where do the quotes come from? The answer is from the people who uttered them. But, how did you find them? Oh, that. Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan. He always has some great ones to share. On to the On Point quotes –
Screwtape on Moderation
Make him doubt whether the first days of his Christianity were not, perhaps, a little excessive. Talk to him about ‘moderation in all things’. If you can once get him to the point of thinking that ‘religion is all very well up to a point’, you can feel quite happy about his soul. A moderated religion is as good for us as no religion at all—and more amusing.
Jack Lewis
The Screwtape Letters
If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
John 15:10
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
I Corinthians 10:23
Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.
The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.
The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off. Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.
The Propers for today are found on Page 112-113, with the Collect first:

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle for today came from the Twelfth Chapter of Paul’s letter to the Romans beginning at the Sixteenth Verse. The Epistle shows the way to Christian action in life. Paul lays out a hard path, but one that goes where we want to be in the end.
B
E not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
The Holy Gospel for today came from the Second Chapter of the Gospel of Saint John beginning at the First Verse.

ND the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: and both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six water-pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the water-pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, and saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
Bishop Ogles’ Sermon
We are oft fortunate to get copies of Bishop Jerry’s sermon notes. Today is one of those Sundays. Today’s sermon starts off with the collect, and like always, it will give you a lot to consider in your heart.

The purpose of the sermon is to open the hearts and minds of the hearers to the beauty and truth of God’s Holy Word; and to point out the direct meaning to us today – without change.
Our Gospel text opens with the phrase, “And the third day….” This was the third day from the calling of the first disciples, among them Nathaniel was the last. Jesus revealed to Nathaniel His foreknowledge of Nathaniel even while he was yet a baby. This private revelation convinced Nathaniel, beyond any doubt, that our Lord Jesus Christ was the Messiah. Our Lord still opens the eyes of the sinner to private callings though never in conflict with Holy Scripture. The silent urgings of the Holy Ghost in the heart the chosen vessel is overwhelming evidence of God’s calling and election. But there are other signs and miracles that are designed to show a broader evidence in general of the Lord’s power and identity. That is the purpose of the first miracle which our Lord wrought at Cana of Galilee. It is designed to punctuate the high regard and esteem in which God the Father holds His first Institution which He made in Eden between one man and one woman. God regards the marriage bond in the same sense as the bond existing between His only Begotten son and the Church. It is for this reason that biblical marriage between one man and one woman is of such profound importance in the eyes of God.
It is noteworthy Jesus and His disciples were invited to the Marriage Feast as the starting point of His earthly ministry. It is, as well, worth noting this is His first miracle in the eyes of men. The mother of Jesus, Mary, was also present. But I stress – if Jesus is not invited as the central party of any marriage, it is merely a manmade arrangement. A government issued license does not constitute a biblical marriage – it must be God-centered.
In the eastern countries, and in Asia today, the marriage ceremony is viewed as a measure of the quality and character of the two families engaged in the union. All things must be made as perfect as possible to avoid derision and even bad report. Food must be plentiful, attire must be formal and suitable, and the libations must be abundant. Else, the wedding arrangement begins on a bad footing almost superstitious for future promise.
This wedding took place not very far from Nazareth at Cana – perhaps five to seven miles distance. Like most caring mothers, Mary was worried at the prospect of the wine running out. In fact, the wine had already expired and Mary made our Lord aware of the deficiency. “They have no wine!” Note that Mary did not suggest any manner of satisfying the need. She knew her Son well enough to know that He would be able to remedy the want of wine whether by some common method or by the power of His might. When we plead in our prayers for the remedy of our problems we should simply state our great need to the Lord and not the means whereby we want Him to satisfy that need.
What was our Lord’s response to Mary’s entreaty? It was respectful and firm. “Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.” The term ‘woman’ as we all know was an honorific in those days. Jesus responded with parental respect; however, honoring our parents does not necessitate complete obedience forever, especially when God has called us to a High calling. Jesus was making clear to His mother that His time of raising and subjection under her roof must take a backseat to His obedience to His Father in Heaven. It is true of every son or daughter today, as well.
Mary did not even respond to the Independence of her Son but simply told the servant staff, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” She had perfect confidence Jesus would not allow the friends and neighbors of the Marriage Feast to be humiliated.
There were, on hand at the residence, six jars which were used for ritual cleansing of the Jews. These each could contain up to seven gallons of water. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the waterpots with water.” He commanded that they be FILLED. Why? So that all present could see that there was no possibility of the jars containing a full measure, or any measure, of wine before the miracle. The servants, amazingly, did not question His motive in filling the jars – they simply obeyed without delay. This is one of the greatest problems of Christians today and of all times – unquestioning obedience to God. “And they filled them up to the brim.” No room for doubt.
One point: this was not grape juice the Lord was transforming from water, but germinated fruit of the vine. “Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.” Once more, immediate obedience. The servants are often privy to greater knowledge and understanding than the honored guests and masters of ceremonies. In this case, they saw and knew what Jesus had done, but the master of ceremonies was in the blind of the event.
In the Bible, fermented wine is a symbol of joy. It warms the heart and makes merry when consumed in moderation. “When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.” It is true that the world serves an apparition of the best wine first, and then, with poisoned taste to detect the difference, the worse wine of life is served up. I my case, God has saved the best wine of my life for last. I can truly say that I am happier now than I have ever before been with Christ as my Rock and Fortress. Beethoven’s most memorable symphony was his last and at a time when his health had completely broken and he had lost his hearing – a great tragedy for a musician. But his 9th Symphony, most famous for the 5th movement (Ode to Joy) was Beethoven’s very best. God saved the best wine of Beethoven’s life for last. He will do so for all of faith.
Please consider the import of today’s text and miracle. “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.” Jesus made this His first miracle with amazing intention. In Genesis 1, God created the Heavens and the earth and all that in them is – in Genesis 2, God established Marriage =between the man and the woman (Adam & Eve) as His first institution. That institution prefigured the second which was the marriage existing between Christ and His Church. The first is supposed to reflect, in earthly character, the second. Any corruption of that institution of marriage is a perversion which God calls an ‘ABOMINATION.” (see Leviticus 18:22 & Romans 1:24-32, et al)
This first miracle was a seal of identity of our Lord Jesus Christ as the Bridegroom of His Bride – the Church. It was a manifestation of His power over the physical laws of Nature and His glory above all others.
There is coming another Marriage Feast to which the elect are invited beyond the Gates of Splendor. All provision has been made of the nature needful for the most opulent feast ever at the great cost of the Divine blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. As is the eastern custom, He has also purchased a marriage garment for us – the White Robe of Righteousness – which He sealed at Calvary. It covers our filth and nakedness just as the father’s best robe covered that of his prodigal son. Be sure you are not made ashamed by appearing without that wedding garment and being cast out at the last moment.
Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action
Church of the Faithful Centurion, Descanso, California
Today’s sermon ties together the propers, that is to say the prayer and readings for this week. Consider these words from the Collect:
… mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us …
In the Collect, we are asking God to set aside our failures and protect and aid us in all we do with His strong hand. God is perfect, thus so is His counsel. When we acknowledge our imperfection and ask Him for help, we should look to the written record of His Son, our Savior; the ultimate example of perfection and we should be doing do our best to follow Him, by being honest, hard working, peaceful and helpful. When we do this, we will prosper; not only in this world, but in our hearts. And not only our hearts, but doing these things will make things better for those around us, too. When we pray for His Help, we need to listen for the answer, then act on it, not ignore it because it is not the answer we wanted. This is a very common theme throughout the collects and by extension, the Bible. As we have always the same problems, we have the same need, which is to turn to God for help!
Why are we always emphasizing action? There is a simple reason for this. In the space of time where we exist, where we are, is Today. Where God’s finger touches the line of time. Not tomorrow nor the past, but today. We can’t go back in the past or go forward to the future and act there, our actions have to be done in the present. Actions are how we live out our faith. That is why worrying does nothing productive. We should focus on what we can do in the present, rather in the past we cannot change nor the future which is unknown. Acting in the present is far more productive than worrying about places we cannot act in like the past or unknown like the future.
Our God is a God of Action. No less is His Son one of action. All throughout the Bible, you find Jesus doing things, not just talking about them. His faith, shown in the action of His giving His Life that we might live, speaks through His actions. His whole ministry can be summed up in one word, action. This is why we emphasize action. To truly follow Christ requires us to be like Him within the best our abilities and with the Help of the Holy Ghost, perform actions. He has also commanded us to action through the Great Commission to spread the Word to all nations. No matter where you turn reading the Bible, what you find is Action, not Diction. Recall the second half of the Book of Luke. It is known as the Acts of the Apostles, not thoughts, not prayers, not meditations, not wishes or anything else; The ACTS. He expects us to act in our lives, not just talk. If we want to follow Christ, then we need to strive to be like Him and perform actions to live out our faith. Talking is nice, but acting shows people where your heart clearly lies.
The Gospel provides a great example of how our God is a God of Action. In the Gospel we see Jesus performing His first documented earthly miracle, turning water into wine at Cana. He was at first apparently reluctant to perform it, telling his earthly mother that it was not the right time for Him to perform miracles. Mary chose to ignore this and instead placed great faith in her son by instructing the servants, “Whatsoever he saith to you do it.”
She had great faith in Him in that He would perform a miraculous action. Mary truly had the faith Jesus talked about which could “move mountains.” When He referred to this, He was not talking about literally moving mountains, but obstacles which get in our way in life. That is the faith we need to have in Him and God. We need to have faith that He will help us overcome those mountainous obstacles, we just have to let him into our hearts.
His actions created a wine so good, it caused the governor to remark they usually set out the best wine first, then when the partygoers get more drunk they bring out the worst wine. But the wine Jesus created was so good, he said in effect, “You have saved the best for last.”
The whole point behind the Gospel is that Jesus, and God, is a person of action not just diction. Jesus could have chosen not to do anything or tell the servants anything. But He chose to honor His mother’s request and perform a miracle that set off His earthly ministry. When faced with the opportunity to act, He always acted. This was the first of those times when He was faced with a decision point. You will note in all of his miracles He chose to act.
This shows that if we are to become like Christ, we are also to be men and women of action and not just diction. There are too many in this world who to paraphrase President Trumps’ inaugural address “They talk the good talk and sit around on their hands and do nothing.” It is all too easy to say the right words at the right time; however, it is harder to perform the right actions at the right time.
Actions truly show our character more than words ever could. How should we act to show the best of our character? To the extent you are able, attempt to do good to all. Always do the right thing when you are faced with a choice. Sometimes that choice is harder than others to be made, but it must be made all the same. It is possible if we have the Holy Ghost in our hearts to do the right thing. We are not Christ, but if we do our best emulate His earthly actions, we do well. If you treat your enemies with respect and kindness, you oft make them your friends. Like many other things Jesus taught, it is easy to say and hard to do.
Like Jesus at the well, we must remember that our purpose is to help bring people to salvation. We are not called to any action that would push people always from salvation, but rather to lead them by example towards that salvation. We are called to be like Christ as much as possible. So, with that in mind, we must strive to influence the people around us for good. A good reason to think before you open your mouth. Think is what I am about to say going to lead this person to or from Christ. If it will lead them away, think of how you can phrase it so it will lead them to Christ. Any step you take today may have future consequence. Your witness, your testimony, your actions can bring people to the point they accept the Holy Spirit or not. Your interface may only be one small step; but do your best to make it a step towards God, not away. Therefore, let us think about our actions and the possible consequences they could have for people turning to or away from Him.
Error is error, wrong is not right. But, a person’s final destination is up to God, not us. Fortunate for each of us, it should be considered. During the journey of life through the time space continuum, we need to do our best to keep ourselves and those around us moving towards God, not away from Him. The direction is always clear, sometimes we just do not want to read the signs. That is why we need the Holy Ghost’s help to read those signs and keep on moving in the consistent direction towards heaven.
If we understand we are less than perfect, actually far less than imperfect, we have a good start. We know we need God in our lives to give us direction. We need His guidance to direct our ACTION.
The common theme through the Collect, Epistle and Gospel is that if we have hope and trust in God, we must dread naught, and carry on, empowered through our daily lives here on Earth until we are called to our heavenly home. These are actions we must take not mere thoughts or words, actual actions!
Read the Bible, find out what He wants you to do, then Do It. What can you do today to carry out His Will? There are a multitude of things you can DO to carry out His Will, but the question is, “Will you?”
Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail. The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.
The time is now, not tomorrow. The time has come, indeed. How will you ACT?
It is by our actions we are known.

O
GOD, who, through the preaching of the blessed Apostle Saint Paul, hast caused the light of the Gospel to shine throughout the world; Grant, we beseech thee, that we, having his wonderful conversion in remembrance, may show forth our thankfulness unto thee for the same, by following the holy doctrine which he taught; through Jesus Christ our Lord. LMIGHTY and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Biographies are sometimes one of the best ways to tell a story. When you begin to read of an individual, and how he or she began in certain circumstances and over time, with positive and negative experiences, became the person most remembered by history, try to remember this. Amazing lessons can be had. In a short sense the experiences and influences around them shaped them to become the final person we remember them for today. We can benefit greatly from good biographies.
Let us look at a brief biography of the man from Tarsus, a certain Saul, who would over time go from one of the most feared men in the early church to one of the most respected. What happened to this fellow to cause such a change?
Saul would be born into the most advantageous social situations in the Roman Empire. His father was Roman, which automatically gave Saul the rights and privileges of a Roman citizen. He was at the top of the social order of the time. His mother was Jewish, which by that tradition made him a Jew. He was raised in Jewish society, given the best education and was a rising star in the segment of the Jewish religious community. He was a Pharisee, not just a Pharisee, but one who had studied under Gamaiel, one of the most respected rabbis of the time.
Now after the establishment of the early church in Jerusalem, Saul began to attack the new converts. They presented a danger to the order of the system in place. They were close, in belief with the Jews, one god, etc., but they believed the Messiah had come, a fellow named Jesus.
This was dangerous and heretical stuff to those who did not understand who Jesus was. Saul began to systematically try to destroy this off-shoot of Judaism. He was witness at the first public death (martyrdom) of this new sect. A young man named Stephen, who had been set aside by the Disciples as a deacon, to minister to the orphan and widows, was arrested ,tried and convicted of heresy. He was sentenced to be stoned to death. Saul was present at this execution. He watched as the crowd killed this young believer, in a manner that was proscribed by Mosaic law for heresy or unbelief.
Apparently this emboldened Saul and he began a campaign to eradicate the Faith where ever he could find it. He was doing a good job in Jerusalem and now set his sights on Damascus, where a sizeable population of Jewish/Christian converts lived.
Acts 9:1-20 This is most of the account of Saul’s conversion. Later Saul now known as Paul would write letters to various groups and churches around the eastern Mediterranean area giving more detail to his conversion and subsequent work for the Kingdom.
Something that must give a non-believer pause is the 180 degree shift in Saul/Paul’s life.
Here is an individual who has everything, social privilege, social stature, wealth and a name known all over as someone to respect. And yet in spite of all of this, Saul/Paul will give this all up, walk away from it, and begin a life of uncertainty as a follower of an obscure carpenter from the back country. Why?
This very change should get a non-believer thinking, why would Paul do this? He gave up all for a belief. That testimony in itself should get one to question and study why this happened. There was no material gain for Paul, he certainly wasn’t received by the believers 100%. He will in fact spend a number of years establishing his authority to do what he was doing, with the open opposition from other believers most of his ministry.
The obvious reason, to a believer, for this 180 degree change in direction is that Saul/Paul was converted. He was called out by Christ Jesus to be his outreach to the Gentile, he was selected by Christ to reach the educated and more privileged society of the time. And yet he did not ignore the poor, the day to day labor, merchants and regular folk. Paul’s ministry would reach across all spectrums of society at the time. “rich or poor, slave or free, male or female.”
In 2 Corinthians Chapter 12 verses 1-9 Paul gives an account of what must have happened after he was struck from his horse on the road to Damascus. All the pharisaical education he had from the time he was 12 until he was considered an elder at 30 would pale in comparison to what he learned those days, weeks and months in Damascus and in the wilderness beyond. He would learn an eternity of faith during that time and yet with all this education at the ‘feet’ of the Holy Spirit, he would still have the day to day issues of faith to deal with the rest of his life. This gives us an example of how we should always study and seek the Lord daily.
If we are to learn anything from Paul’s life after his conversion maybe it is this. No matter how prepared, smart, intelligent we are, we still must rely upon Jesus for our day to day walk in faith. In the many letters that Paul wrote to the churches during his ministry you will find instruction, inspiration, correction and many other aspects of a daily walking in faith; all of which is set forth as an edifying of the faithful. And most especially, maybe to the chagrin of those who don’t believe, Paul did this all for no gain of his own. He did not enrich himself, he did not seek fame, he did not seek undue influence. Now let us read what Paul wrote about this very idea.
O
F such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities. 6 For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me. 7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. 8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. 9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Reading biographies, especially carefully researched and as true can be written, are one of the best teaching methods still in place. In the modern concept of education most biographies, unless they push a fringe agenda or extremist view, are ignored. Young and old alike can learn a lot from the lives of those who have gone before. In some cases biographies may teach what you should not do with your life choices. In other cases, choices that may be explored for the betterment of an individual can be found in the pages of a good biography.
The biographies of the Holy Bible give us a glimpse at what should be or in some cases shouldn’t be the life of a believer. Think of Samuel, Moses, Saul the king, David, Solomon, Samson, Gideon, and all the major and minor prophets of the Old Testament, all leaving us life lessons to learn from whether good or bad.
On this day we commemorate the life of the first great missionary of the early church. Let us read about the heroes and heroines of the Old and New Testament, seeking to emulate the good and avoiding the mistakes of the bad examples found in the Scripture.
Let us pray:
O
GOD of all sanctification, Almighty Sovereign, whose goodness is felt to be infinite; who art present throughout all things at once, in heaven and earth, keeping Thy mercy for Thy people who walk before the presence of Thy glory; Hear the prayers of Thy servants, that Thine eyes may be open upon this house clay and night; graciously accept this church, set apart by holy rites in honor of St. Paul, mercifully illumine and brighten it with Thine own glory. Favorably accept every one who comes to worship in this place; graciously be pleased to look down, and for the sake of Thy great Name, and high arm, readily protect, hear, and everlastingly keep and defend, those who make their prayer in this habitation; that they being always happy, and always rejoicing in, Thy true religion, may constantly persevere in the Universal Faith of the Holy Trinity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O
GOD who hast prepared for those who love Thee such good things as pass man’s understanding; Pour into our hearts such love toward Thee, that we, loving Thee above all things, may obtain Thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O
GOD, who hast made all those that are born again in Christ to be a royal and priestly race; Grant us both the will and the power to do what Thou commandest; that all Thy people may have the same faith in their hearts, and the same piety in their actions; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A
LMIGHTY and everlasting God, the Comfort of the sad, the Strength of sufferers, let the prayers of those that cry out of any tribulation come unto Thee; that all may rejoice to find that Thy mercy is present with them in their afflictions; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
T
HE of Lord bless us, and keep us. The Lord make His face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up His countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and evermore. Amen.
T
HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon
We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon. If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth. This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.
The Third Sunday after The Epiphany
In today’s Epistle (Romans 12:16-21) Paul tells us to Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men (v.17). Consider the last part of that verse. What does it mean? Rev Matthew Henry once penned the following regarding the use of that expression in II Corinthians 8:21, … it is the duty of all Christians to provide for things honest, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men; that is, to act so prudently as to prevent… all unjust suspicions concerning us, and all occasions of scandalous imputations.
Even the worldly and ungodly have from time to time utilized such wisdom to carry forth their various plans and devices. Hear now the words of Niccolo Machiavelli from his work The Prince:
A Prince should therefore be very careful that nothing ever escapes his lips which is not replete with the five qualities [of mercy, good faith, integrity, humanity, and religion] so that to see and hear him, one would think him the embodiment [of the same]. And there is no virtue which it is more necessary for him to seem to possess than the last; because men in general judge rather by the eye than by the hand, for every one can see but few can touch. Every one sees what you seem, but few know what you are, and these few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many who have the majesty of the State to back them up.
Needless to say, it is hypocrisy to mimic being a child of God when you are not, but then the wicked aren’t concerned about the matters of faith and practice except to use them to further whatever agenda they have in mind.
Nevertheless, God has seen through them. God has read their hearts and knows well their intentions and purposes.
And God knows us as well. That is why he put the message of our lesson today within the scriptures. Remember, All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. (II Timothy 3:16-17)
Our good and gracious heavenly Father wants us to keep the Devil at bay and to do that we need to avoid the things which will open ourselves up to his influence. Rev EM Bounds once noted, If the spirit of forgiveness is always maintained and constantly exercised, it is a supreme defense against the attacks of Satan. An unforgiving spirit is not only Satan’s widest door into our hearts, but also his strongest invitation and warmest welcome.
When we are providing things honest in the sight of God and men, we are showing forth the truth of God’s word written. We are honoring our Lord and we are revealing the honest nature within us. We are not mere actors playing a role as Christians. We are Christians! The true and faithful Christian will not act against his nature because he is about pleasing God and not simply himself.
Rev Bounds also observed, The mighty new-birth experience makes a man watchful like a sentinel at his post. When the Enemy in power is massed… the believer is like a watchman. He stands on the walls of the beleaguered city like a guard over a royal prisoner. This keeping and guarding himself is safety against Satan’s inflaming touch. The faithful and vigilant Christian keeps himself pure, and Satan comes and finds nothing in him (see John 14:30). Every vantage point is barred and sleeplessly watched. ‘Keeping ourselves’ is the surest pledge that Satan will not keep us.
Oh, how true. The regenerated soul has the power to say No to sin and make it stick for as the Apostle Paul wrote in I Corinthians 10:13, There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
When you are providing what is honest in the sight of men and of God, it is good to know that we can successfully resist temptation because it is a tool of the evil one who will seek to overthrow our faith and make us all castaways. God did not seal us as believers to have us removed from his hand. Consider also an earlier passage from I Corinthians: What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s (6:19-20).
I pray each of you will daily live in God’s perfect will; that you will cleave to his word written and stand firm in the doctrines found therein. We can know what God’s perfect will for us is if we are willing to be obedient to his word and commandment.
The unregenerate say that they cannot understand the word of God and so they listen to false teachers and ministers who tell them what they want to hear. This is not a new tale at all, for as the apostle Peter wrote in his second epistle, But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction (2:1).
They do not understand because as our Lord once warned, Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word (John 8:43). They are, as the apostle Paul described them, Natural men” who, receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto [them], because they are spiritually discerned (I Corinthians 2:14). That is why an unregenerate person cannot serve God because he or she cannot truly understand what God’s expectations are for his people as they are not of his fold.
It is our job as Christians to reach out to our unregenerated fellow citizens as God gives us leave to do so that they will have a witness which might, and I emphasize might, have a spiritual therapeutic effect upon them. And who knows, maybe some of them might turn and be saved. But we have to put forth a honest and godly message and only by the power of the Holy Ghost will that be possible if we are truly in Christ and not just acting as if we are in Christ.
Let us pray,
O
LORD our God, give us the words to say to turn the hearts of the unregenerate to you; and bless our efforts in these last days as we serve in your harvest; and these things we ask in the name of him who is our only Saviour and the King of kings and Lord of lords, even Jesus Christ. Amen.
Have a blessed week, Bryan+
People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.
The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.
Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?
No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.
What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.
How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.
What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.
Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!
Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.
Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country
Our country has lost its way. Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take. Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them. Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God. Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down. Down, into the depths of the pit. Pray people will recognize there is:
• One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
• All religions are not equal;
• All ways of life are not equal;
• The Bible holds the Key to Life;
• All rights come from God, not the State;
• Good;
• Bad;
• Evil;
• Right;
• Wrong;
• Allah is the Devil;
• Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.
Pray this recognition will not come too late. Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.
