Remembrance of Saint Mark superseding the Third Sunday after Easter AOC Sunday Report
This is the Remembrance of Saint Mark, superseding the third Sunday after Easter; the Easter season is five Sundays, the last of which, the Fifth Sunday after Easter, is commonly called Rogation Sunday. Like every day, today we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, Christ the Lord IS Risen today!
On Point
Someone asked, where do the quotes come from? The answer is from the people who uttered them. But, how did you find them? Oh, that. Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan. He always has a few great ones to share. On to the On Point quotes –
Perfection
When He said, ‘Be perfect,’ He meant it. He meant that we must go in for the full treatment. It is hard; but the sort of compromise we are all hankering after is harder—in fact, it is impossible. It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.
The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.
The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off. Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.
The Propers for today are found on Page 237-238, with the Collect first:
Saint Mark the Evangelist. [April 25.]
The Collect.
O |
ALMIGHTY God, who hast instructed thy holy Church with the heavenly doctrine of thy Evangelist Saint Mark; Give us grace that, being not like children carried away with every blast of vain doctrine, we may be established in the truth of thy holy Gospel; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LMIGHTY God, who showest to them that are in error the light of thy truth, to the intent that they may return into the way of righteousness; Grant unto all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s Religion, that they may avoid those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
The Epistle for today came from Saint Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, the Fourth Chapter, beginning at the Seventh Verse.

NTO every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: from whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Today’s Gospel came from the Gospel according to Saint John, the Fifteenth Chapter, beginning at the First Verse.

AM The true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
Bishop Ogles’ Sermon
We are oft fortunate to get copies of Bishop Jerry’s sermon notes. Today is one of those Sundays. Today’s sermon starts off with the collect, and like always, it will give you a lot to consider in your heart.

OR whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. 5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: 6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God. 8 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: 9 And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. 10 And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. 11 And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people. 12 And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust. 13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. (Romans 15:4-13)
We honor Saint Mark the Evangelist today, the traditional memorial date for his remembrance. He was Bishop of Alexandria and first brought the Gospel to Africa. He was martyred in 68 AD by being dragged through the streets by a rope around his neck. It is important we remember strong and devout Christians of the past as examples to our own lives.
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Were one to read the last book of the Bible (Revelations) so thoroughly and often that he could recite the whole from memory, he would yet have only a cursory and partial understanding of God and His Word. How can one know the profundity of the title, Lamb of God, if he has not read thoroughly the account of the first Passover in Egypt? The Bible is a great narrative from beginning to end. It is comprised of many smaller narratives building upon the greater one of God and His People. We have our hope and comfort through the patient reading (and understanding) of Holy Scripture. When we see our own treachery in the face of David, who committed both adultery and murder, we are reminded that, like David, God can restore us from those depths of our sin. When we see the courageous Peter wither in fear and deny Christ three times in one night, we are made to understand that we, too, have denied through our words and deeds before others. When we see our own depravity in that of the woman taken in adultery, we see the Grace and Mercy of God to forgive and restore. The strength of our understanding Scripture is Hope in how God can take a broken heart and amend it to Joy, or even turn the grievous misfortunes of our lives into good for those who believe!
Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus. Christ has taught us more times than once that He and the Father are One – One in Mind, One in Spirit, and One in Purpose. His great craving is that we, too, will be one with Him and, if one with Him, then one also with the Father. Believers cannot be one with Christ and not one with each other. Regardless of their claims to the contrary, every church has creeds upon which they stake their faith and doctrine. Even if no written down, such creeds are repeated oft in conversation. The Apostles and Nicene Creeds are summaries of proven Scriptural doctrine upon which we must all agree in order to be in sound Communion with each other and with God. We recite, in every one of our services, one or the other of the Creeds which bring us together in one Mind with each other and with Christ. The Lord’s Prayer, as well, unites us as one in Christ. It is a Communal prayer for it begins with Our Father not MY Father. A correct understanding of God’s Holy Word will remove all division and bring us into one Body and one Mind – that of our Lord Jesus Christ! That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God. And how did Christ receive us? He received us by unmerited Grace! We were not required to pass some sort of ‘righteousness’ test before He called and chose us. We were unworthy and broken, yet He saw something in us that generated the kind of love that made Him willing to die in our stead in redemption of our many sins. We will never meet a perfect Christian, but we will see in his features the perfect Christ. We cannot achieve the level of righteousness by which we can earn heaven, but we can enjoy that perfect, imputed righteousness of Christ that He has bestowed upon us by His Grace and Love. When we look upon another of our brothers and sisters in Christ, we should not view them as to how far short of God’s glory that may have fallen or come, we should view them for all that they may BECOME through the Grace of God. That, thankfully, is how Christ views us – not for what we presently ARE, but what we may BECOME in Him!
Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers. Christ fulfilled all requirements of the Law. He did not abrogate or change that Law, or even lessen it. He actually made it more all-encompassing! Wherein in times past, the Law was written on Tables of Stone at Sinai, now He has written them in the tender chambers of our hearts – written in love and not stone! Love cannot deny itself. If we truly love, we cannot offend. He has become the Ark of salvation to the people of God – both believing Jew and Gentile. (vv 9-12).
Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. The White Nile (joy and peace), at its origin on the heights of Kilimanjaro, begins as a trickling stream. But it gathers force as the melting snows feed into its current. It is cold and clear. The Blue Nile (hope) is dark and comprised of many rich minerals it extracts from the soil. These two merge into one Great Nile River. It cascades down from the heights of Africa to the plains below in Egypt some four thousand miles distant. On the way, it gathers more and more soil-enriching nutrients which it deposits on those plains as it overflows its bed in abundance. That is very like the abundant power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It may take a trickle and turn it into a flood – and it does! It takes two different natures and joins them to create a miraculous new life. It always points and reminds of Christ. When sad and despairing, I have often taken to singing some of the great old songs of the hymnal. Before I know it, the sorrow is past and joy fills my heart. That is the kind of joy and peace that abounds in hope. Are you filled with all the hope and joy that the Holy Spirit offers? Look to the Word and be lifted!
The River of God is composed on many spiritual tributaries that flow into, and become One with, that Mighty River of God. What a blessing that our souls can be part of such a glorious destiny.

HERE is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. (Psalm 46:4-5)

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.
We are in the Easter Season which consists of Easter and the following four Sundays, through Rogation Sunday. This is a time we should work on centering our lives on the central figure in our religion, Jesus Christ.
Consider these words from the Collect:
… who hast instructed thy holy Church with the heavenly doctrine of thy Evangelist Saint Mark; Give us grace that, being not like children carried away with every blast of vain doctrine, we may be established in the truth of thy holy Gospel; through Jesus Christ our Lord…
Today’s Collect is a bit different than usual, it starts with the statement the Church was left clear and correct doctrine by Saint Mark, and by inference the other apostles, on the doctrine of Christianity as laid down for them by God himself in the form of Jesus. We are cautioned not to fall prey to those who would spread false, unique and appealing doctrine. The various books of the Bible differ in minor details from each other, but on a macro or global level they are congruent or consistent. We are not to chase our wake, but rather to follow a steady course making small and conservative corrections consistent with Scripture. No ‘interpretation’ can override the clear and simple meaning of Scripture. For, once you start down that rabbit hole, there is no telling where you will end up. There is no hidden meaning in Scripture which conflicts with the clear and simple meaning.
When Paul writes to the people of Ephesus[1], he continues his familiar instruction that God has a purpose[2] for each of us according to our God given talents. None of us stands higher in His eyes than another, as each block in the arch is necessary to hold it fast. He points out the one who has assigned these abilities is Jesus Christ Himself. He says we must no longer be as children but mature individuals capable of setting a steady course. I liken this to flying. You set the aircraft in a particular attitude, wait and see what happens. You make corrections to the attitude and power based on deviation from that which is desired, that is to say you check your performance against a standard and make appropriate corrections. This is like our lives and Scripture. No wild changes, no chasing our wake.
John records Jesus’ comparison of Himself to a grape vine, with each of us being branches, without Him, we cannot bear fruit, that is to say do good things. If we fail to bring forth the fruit of His making, then the Father will prune us. If we do well, then we will be rewarded; if not here, then in the real world.
As long as we stay close to Christ and feed our souls on Him, we will bring for that needed fruit.
Bearing fruit requires more than mere mouthing, for it is Action, not Diction, that counts.
When Jesus got ready to leave this world for His, He told the disciples that He would send them the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, to keep them in Him and to help them understand what they had so far been unable to truly grasp. Unless we allow the Holy Ghost to enter into our hearts, we will never understand that which is from God. This is an important concept with messages that are not from God being bombarded across the world through principalities and powers of this world. Only the Holy Ghost can help us remain grounded within the truth. We need the Holy Ghost to enter into us that we might be able to hear the Word of God, and more important than just hearing the Word, we need the Holy Ghost to be able to act upon the Word. We must allow the Holy Ghost to enter in to our hearts and souls so we can understand what God has for us. It is that simple. Open your heart, pray for God to send Him into that open heart.
For with the Holy Ghost’s help, you can hear, understand and act on The Word.
Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail. The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.
The time is now, not tomorrow. The time has come, indeed. How will you ACT?
It is by our actions we are known!

Third Sunday after Easter
Peter certifies Jesus as both Lord and Christ
25 April 2021, AD
Psalm 124 • 1 Samuel 2: 1b-10 • Acts 2:22-36
The Third Sunday after Easter.
The Collect.
A |
LMIGHTY God, who showest to them that are in error the light of thy truth, to the intent that they may return into the way of righteousness; Grant unto all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s Religion, that they may avoid those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
Today let us witness the work of the Holy Spirit. Peter was the last of Christ’s disciples to abandon him before he was tried and convicted of trumped up charges. Acts 2:22-36 takes place only a few weeks after Peter had denied Christ three times. After Christ’s resurrection Jesus will meet again with his disciples and he will restore Peter as a follower of Christ Jesus. Now we are a week out from the Ascension of Christ into heaven, after 40 days of instruction and final fellowship this side of heaven with his disciples and followers; here is Peter speaking to a large crowd in Jerusalem.
The occasion is the Feast of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit has descended on the disciples and they begin to speak in the various languages of the people who have come for the feast. Everyone there understood what the disciples were saying, because they were speaking the languages of the Jewish people who lived around the Mediterranean and other parts of the Roman Empire. These faithful Jews would try to come back to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover or Pentecost at least once a year, if they could. These Jews spoke the languages of the places they lived around the Empire.
First Certification
The fulfillment of Christ’s promise to send a Comforter. When the Holy Spirit came, his manifestation at this time, was the ability of the disciples to speak in recognized foreign tongues.
Y |
E men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
Second Certification
The next certification was the witness of Christ’s resurrection as prophesied by David. He writes of Christ not seeing corruption in the grave. In other words, He will rise again to newness of life. He will not be bound or held by the pains of death, He will overcome death.
Peter explains David could not possibly be writing about himself, since he was dead and his grave was there in Jerusalem for anyone to see. [vv. 25-29]
H |
IM, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: 24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. 25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: 26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: 27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. 29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
As Peter preaches this message you must understand that he is giving both a history lesson and a lesson on heritage to those assembled Jews there that Pentecost Day. Peter is able to preach this message because he is now filled with the Holy Spirit. He gave Peter the words to say. The whole message was the Gospel, it may have been the last chance these assembled Jews ever got to hear the True message of God. That being that …whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved…. Peter then finishes this message with what many there had witnessed, that being the death, burial of Christ.
Some of them may not have been aware of Christ’s resurrection. Peter explains this in the next couple of verses. And makes the bold statement that many in the crowd were witness to Jesus being raised from the dead.
Third Certification
Why does Peter need to certify Jesus as Lord and Christ? Throughout the Old Testament we find the title of Lord used. The determination is Lord God, Lord of the Universe, Lord of Creation. So when Peter certifies Jesus as Lord and Christ, he is explaining to those Jews from far off lands, that the Messiah has come. His name is Jesus of Nazareth.
The witness of Jesus, Lord and Christ, was accompanied by signs, wonders and miracles, by the wondrous Resurrection of Christ from the dead. The evidence of this resurrection was witness by up to 500 people those forty days before Christ the Lord ascended into heaven.
T |
HEREFORE being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. 32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. 34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
Peter concludes the sermon with this admonition in Verse 36.
36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Those who listened to Peter’s sermon were convicted of their sins. They asked Peter what they needed to do. He told them to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and he promised them the gift of the Holy Ghost.
This is the beginning of what will be the model for evangelizing the whole world.
- You must repent of your sins.
- Be baptized as a new believer in Christ Jesus the Lord.
- Begin to multiply. In other words, you need to tell others the Good News of Jesus Christ the Lord.
Not all of you are preachers, teachers, or evangelists, and yet there is a place for every believer.
Each one of us can reach those around us by living as close a life in Christ as possible. By sharing our faith with others, determining every day to make a difference in each life we touch throughout each day.
Let us pray:
O |
LORD Jesus Christ, who didst say to thine Apostles, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; Regard not our sins, but the faith of thy Church, and grant it that peace and unity which is agreeable to thy will; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.
O |
GOD, our heavenly Father, who didst manifest thy love by sending thine only-begotten Son into the world, that all might live through him; Pour thy Spirit upon thy Church, that it may fulfil his command to preach the Gospel to every creature; send forth, we beseech thee, labourers into thine harvest; defend them in all dangers and temptations; and hasten the time when the fulness of the Gentiles shall be gathered in, and all Israel shall be saved through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
R |
EMEMBER, O Lord, that which thou hast wrought in us, and not what we deserve; and as thou hast called us to thy service, make us worth of our calling; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
HE IS RISEN ! HE IS RISEN INDEED !
T |
HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon
We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon. If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth. This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.
Third Sunday after Easter

ET not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. 4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. 5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. 8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father? 10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake. 12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. 13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. 15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. 20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. 21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me. 25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. 26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. 30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence. (John 14)
Let us return to John 14 and hear again the words of our Saviour: I am the way the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (v.6). Our Lord sought to comfort and assure the disciples. He wanted to prepare them for the things that would transpire over the next few days. One would have thought that they would not need such especially since they had witnessed so many wonderful events more particularly the raising of Lazarus from his grave. Still, our Lord knew that their faith was in a more or less formative stage. True enough, they had heard his words and seen his miraculous works; but the best was yet to be. For in less than a week, they would see the risen Lord standing before them clothed in his resurrection body. At that moment they would behold with their own eyes the truth behind what our Lord had communicated to them prior to his arrest. For that event marked the turning point for them and it was that witness which enabled their witness to Jew and Gentile alike as it was a message for all people in this dispensation (Ephesians 1:10). It is proof of what Peter noted God is not willing that any should perish but that all come to repentance (II Peter 3:9). Our heavenly Father has provided a sacrifice that will effectually remove our sins and trespasses, making our citizenship in his kingdom possible if we would but believe on the Lord Jesus and accept him as our Saviour. As the apostle Paul once noted, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation (Romans 10:9).
I often hear from unregenerate that the Christian faith is too narrow. In response, I have found it best to supply them with the testimony of our Lord who said, Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it (Matthew 7:13-14). Unfortunately, the unregenerate are so bound to their ecumenical understanding of salvation that they will for the most part reject our Lord’s message. Nevertheless, they still look for our Lord to just overlook their sins and trespasses so that they might enter whatever heaven there might be. But consider this: no right-thinking person would demand a portion of the estate of another with whom he did not share a close familial connection and who was not so named as an heir by the testator in his will. So it begs the question: why then should God open his kingdom to those who are not of his chosen elect? Our Lord answered that question when he said, Not every one that saith unto to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name?… And then I will profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity (Matthew 7:21-23).
Seriously, how can one spend a lifetime of degradation apart from Christ and expect to receive God’s blessed hope of a joyous and eternal life with him? St. Paul noted in his first epistle to the Thessalonians that he would not have us to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope (4:13). The people who have no hope are not asleep in the Lord but are dead to the Godhead and their souls are in the fires of perdition. They are eternally separated from the love of God by their own choice. The apostle Paul noted in his epistle to the Romans that, the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened (1:18-21).
The Christian alone has that hope which is firmly grounded in Jesus Christ. Why would God offer him up as a sacrifice for sin if no sacrifice was necessary? No, my friends, God the Father sent his only begotten Son into the world to redeem us from the wrath come. He came that through the shedding of his blood we might find redemption and release from our sins and be made citizens of his kingdom. It is, therefore, a fantasy indeed to believe that God is going to just overlook the sins of those who claimed no kinship with Jesus Christ and yet wish to spend an eternity enjoying the benefits of his sacrifice— a sacrifice which by their own admission they have rejected through their perpetual refusal to embrace him as their Saviour and Lord.
And God desires us to have not only a relationship with him but to have fellowship with him. Relationships can be distant, and irregular. Fellowship is face to face, and heart to heart. Fellowship speaks of personal contact and familiarity. There is love and friendship within the bonds of fellowship, and God wants that with us. Nevertheless, such a relationship must be on his terms and not ours and that is where the Holy Bible comes in; for within its pages we are given that one important name through which we can establish our relationship with the Godhead, and that name is Jesus Christ.
And it should be further understood that we cannot offer up to God our prayers and petitions and have them answered in any meaningful way if we will not follow his prescriptions for life and worship. If we are to have fellowship with the LORD, we must come before him with reverence and holiness. Psalm 66:3 states, Say unto God, How terrible art thou in thy works. And in Psalm 96:9 we read, O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth. Rev Matthew Henry once noted that, “All… acts of worship must be performed with a holy awe and reverence.” Our Lord admonished us to, Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea I say unto you, Fear him (Luke 12:5). So then we ought to come before his presence with song, and with praise, as well as with reverence, holiness, meekness and in self-control.
Sadly, too many Christians have permitted their houses of worship to become places of spectacle more akin to a circus than a house of prayer. As Bible scholar SD de Hart once observed, “It is not uncommon for modern houses of prayer… to be designed in a ‘sanctinasium’ style… A stage… designed for the performers… spot lights with various colors and special effects obtrude into the line of vision, and a plexi-glass pulpit stands in front and central… The modern church has unfortunately provided the most well prepared soil for growing the forbidden fruit of pride…What is missing is the beauty of the garden, a tree of life, a green pasture, and a Good Shepherd!” Still I have heard the proponents of such religious venues say in all earnestness that their worship is acceptable to God and it makes them feel good. Nevertheless, we must be cautious as sincerity of purpose is not enough to please God. We cannot offer God what we think he ought to have and keep from him that which he expects. God expects reverence— putting him first, giving him the glory— not taking it for ourselves. Think of it this way: God’s house is a house of prayer. It is a place dedicated to his worship and not a platform to bring glory and praise to anyone else. How can we honor the Lord when we are busy drawing attention to ourselves? It would seem that those who embrace such practices are more desirous of God coming to them rather than the other way around. Again, hear the words of our Saviour, I am the way the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
One thing further, our worship ought to include a proper presentation of God’s word written by godly men who have been called to that purpose, and who possess a firm belief in the truth of Scripture. Therefore every minister, pastor, priest, bishop and deacon, as well as every Sunday school teacher, ought to be a fundamentalist with regard to the truth of the Scriptures. In order for our worship of God to be accepted by him, we must have faith in his word written as the truth. Our Lord prayed to the Father concerning all who would come to him, They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth (John 17:16-17).
And remember, we are not working to serve ourselves as laborers in God’s harvest. We are soldiers in his army. We are ministers and priests in his church. We are to communicate the good news of Jesus Christ to others so that they might come to accept him as their Saviour and Lord. We do this that they too will be preserved— assured of salvation— having their names inscribed in God’s Book of Life. May it please our gracious and loving God that through our lives and service more souls will come to know the truth about our Lord Jesus Christ and accept him as their Saviour. Make that your prayer as well.
Let us pray,
O |
GRACIOUS heavenly Father, send down to us the Holy Ghost the Comforter to assist our witness on your behalf; and this we ask in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Have a blessed week, Bryan+
People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.
The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.
Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?
No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.
What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.
How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.
What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.
Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!
Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.
Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells

For Our Country

Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down. Down, into the depths of the pit. Pray people will recognize there is:
- One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
- All religions are not equal;
- All ways of life are not equal;
- The Bible holds the Key to Life;
- All rights come from God, not the State;
- Good;
- Bad;
- Evil;
- Right;
- Wrong;
- Allah is the Devil;
- Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.
Pray this recognition will not come too late. Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.
