Today was the Seventh Sunday after Trinity in the Endless Green Season.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

On the Present Moment

Never, in peace or war, commit your virtue or your happiness to the future. Happy work is best done by the man who takes his long-term plans somewhat lightly and works from moment to moment “as to the Lord.” It is only our daily bread that we are encouraged to ask for. The present is the only time in which any duty can be done or any grace received.

Heresy in the Cathedral

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

Matthew23:27-28

A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

Mark 6:4

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard.  It is quite interesting the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States.  Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church.  Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of the nation.

The Propers for today are found on Page 198-199, with the Collect first:

L

ORD of all power and might, who art the author and giver of all good things; Graft in our hearts the love of thy Name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of thy great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle came from the Sixth Chapter of Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans beginning at the Nineteenth Verse. Paul reminds us when we strive above all else for the things of this world, we gain nothing we can take with us to the next.  “For, when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.”  Conversely, if we will be servants of God (righteousness) we can be free from the devil sin).  “… the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.  If we will follow God, we will live, not only forever in the next world, but better in this world.  We must put aside what we did and do what He would have us do.  Actions are the key to everything.  Talk is nice.  Action is what counts.

I

SPEAK after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Today Holy Gospel was written in the Eighth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Mark beginning at the First Verse. Jesus had been in the wilderness teaching a multitude, some four thousand in number.  In those pre-restaurant on every corner days, the people had been without food and were hungry.  Jesus was concerned and inventoried their supplies, seven loaves and a few small fishes.  He gave thanks to God, and commanded the food to be set out before the people.  When they had eaten their fill, the scraps gathered up from the seven loaves filled seven baskets.

Many speculated over the years as to just how He did it.  The answer is simple, He did it.  He did not talk about feeding the multitude and sit down to His own meal.  He acted and they were fed.  Does this story recall the words from the Last Supper used in Holy Communion at the Consecration? “he took Bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you; Do this in remembrance of me.”  Those few words produced The Word, which has satisfied so many over millenniums.

I

N those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: and if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far. And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people. And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.

Sermon and Collect Notes

Seventh Sunday after Trinity

Sympathy of Christ

Saint Andrew’s Anglican Orthodox Church

18 July 21, Anno Domini (In the Year of our Lord)

Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. (Psalm 112:6-7)

The Seventh Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

L

ORD of all power and might, who art the author and giver of all good things; Graft in our hearts the love of thy Name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of thy great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The opening of the Collect (using Gelasius translation) formerly used the honorific: “O Lord of Host” as its introductory opening; however, Archbishop Thomas Cranmer referenced the Lord as described in James 1:17 – “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

This Collect asks four things of God which we are incapable of doing ourselves:

  1. Graft in our hearts the love of thy Name
  2. Increase in us true religion
  3. Nourish us with all goodness
  4. Keep us

We can neither receive, nor retain, the love of God’s name without the efficacious working of the Holy Spirit therein. We are helpless to supply a thing of which we can claim no ownership. The love that permeates our hearts is from the overflowing Fountain and Source of Love which is in God through Jesus Christ. Like our bodies, we cannot add a single inch to the stature of our spirits and souls. All of the increase we enjoy in knowledge, wisdom, and understanding comes from that same Source from which the Love of God overflows. Our nourishment is forever from God if it is wholesome and good. We daily partake of the Bread of Heaven given by that Giver of all good things found in the Word of God which is preserved for us as a gift to all who believe. Who is our Keeper? Why, it is the Lord Himself. He is our Good Shepherd to keep us in the good way. He is the Rock of our Salvation to keep us from drifting. He is the Ark into which we flee for salvation in the day of ruin. And He is much more…so much more that we cannot mention all in the scope of a short devotion. Since He is the Word in total, He is also the Author and Giver of Life itself, and the Preserver of Life in Love.

6 Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. The righteous of the Lord are steady as a well-steered ocean vessel on the seas of life. The Captain knows well the course, and His Compass is true to the North Throne of God. Those who are everlastingly ‘remembered’ by God cannot be moved from that faith and grace which has saved them, and preserved them.

He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. The immovable North Star has long been used by seafaring vessels as a constant reference and guide across the vast oceans. The navigation of the vessel is based on clear vision and physical sight; but there is a means by which the soul of the Christian may be guided in both light and darkness by means of an indwelling compass of the heart. That compass is the Holy Ghost. Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. (Isaiah 26:3)

I hope you will remember the immortal lines of a poem by Minnie Louise Haskins, titled God Knows:

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:

“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”

And he replied:

“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.

That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”

So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night.

And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.

As an illustration of the unseen change in the character of the heart of a Christian when they have received Christ as Lord, I took a metal rod of 36 inch length and oriented it to magnetic north. I also deviated the point to align with the magnetic axis of the earth at the 30 degree parallel. I struck the rod sharply with a hammer. The rod became sufficiently magnetized to attract the needle of the compass to a far greater extent than previous to being so stricken. The object was to demonstrate that there is a fundamental change in the nature of the heart when God comes in through faith and the grace of Christ. Though it is composed of the same cell tissue, it has a different nature following such an experience. I also took metals of various elements and scattered on a table. Those made of iron were attracted immediately to a strong magnet I swung over the table. Those metals of copper and lead remained unmoved. God recognizes His own nature in the natures of the hearts that have been ‘magnetized’ by His Love.

A sailing vessel may be many hundreds of tons. It may carry a large cargo and take on a great draught of water. Its sails are extremely important for they provide the vessel with the means of movement based on prevailing winds. When errors in navigation are discovered, the sails, like our motivations, can be adjusted to correct to a right course. The ship’s structure is also vitally important. It must be made of sturdy materials and its design commensurate to cutting through the blasts and billows of the storm.

But there is one device on the ship that is of far greater importance than the quality of canvas comprising the sails, or the species of timber defining its hull. That device is the magnetic compass. Though the captain of the vessel may use a sextant under clear skies for navigation, it is worthless under a cloudy sky. But the magnetic compass performs under every condition of weather or light. It may temporarily deviate when attracted by a large mass of metal on a passing ship, or by the electrifying impulses of the lightning from a storm, but it will always move back to magnetic north. That magnetic compass is so very similar to our Conscience, guided by the Holy Spirit, with which God has equipped us. It may be attracted temporarily to the passing things of this world; or it may deviate from true course briefly in the storms of life; but it will always return to its true reading and point the way to safe harbor of the soul.

When our hearts are fixed and trusting in the Lord, we may waver at moments of temptation. But that will only be a rare and temporary deviation.  Our hearts, as did David’s and Peter’s, return to the true course of our love and safety in Christ. A heart whose foundation is that Rock of Christ is stayed and immovable. It may shake with the blast of ill winds against its walls, but it is fixed in place and cannot be moved. Do you have such a heart, reader?

Sermon

Please pray that the Holy Spirit will give deep insight unto these Words:

(Mark 8:1-9)

The text today has greater reach than a cursory reading will admit. It is about the graces and benefits that accrue to the believer who is the Maker and Benefactor of all things to His Creation.

Christ had no beginnings for He was with the Father from Eternity Past before the

Though He benefits His people with Bread and Manna, that Bread which we eat is not that Bread that comes down from Heaven, for He is that Bread of Heaven;

J

ESUS said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. 34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. 35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. (John 6:32-35)

He is both the Water of Life  and the Bread of Life. He satisfies both our Hunger AND our Thirst. Just as the Samaritan Woman at the noonday hour came for the perishable water beneath the streets of Sheckham, who received the heavenly water from Christ, so may we.

I

 SPEAK as to wise men; judge ye what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. (1 Cor 10:15-17)

When we partake of the Bread of Communion, Bishop Cranmer reminds us the bread is composed of many, even thousands, of crushed grains of wheat. All of these grains added together comprise the one loaf or Body of Christ. We die daily by being crushed and maligned for Christ and His people.

Look at today’s text and read with understanding – a deeper understanding:

1 In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them, 2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: 3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.

Christ has always had compassion for the multitude, but what is Compassion?

Com: latin, together, or jointly, and, passion: strong feeling of sympathy

Compassion: such depth of sympathy that moves one to act (as the Good Samaritan)

These multitudes had followed Christ for three days. They probably brought rations for one day believing that would be their time with Him. But they hungered more for His Word than for food. This was the True Bread from Heaven. The last days, they fasted from earthly bread.

These unlearned disciples still lack the fullness of understanding of their Lord.

And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?

They had with them the Maker and Creator of the worlds, but where could they get bread in the wilderness?

And he asked them, How many loaves have ye?

God will not satisfy our needs unless we bring our all to the table.  If have nothing, that is enough; but if we have seven loaves, that too is enough.

And they said, Seven

And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.

He commanded the people be seated to receive the bread. When we come before God, we do not stand on our own feet and feed ourselves. Our works cannot suffice. We must be fed by Him and His ordained disciples.

Our Cup runneth over……..plenty for all!

And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. We must ask the blessings of God and return thanks for the morsels that we eat.

Christ fed 5,000 at the beginning of His ministry, and now the 4,000 at the ending of it. He feeds with both meat and bread (fish).

So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.

Just as twelve baskets were left over in the first case, we now have seven left over in this case. The remains of such a small beginning with God.

But Christ will have no waste. Take up what is left and feed others who are hungry in the way.

9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.

We cannot always remain in such close presence of the blessings of Christ. The time will come when He must send us away – not from Himself, but out in the world to act as witnesses for him.  If we begin at the feet of Jesus as did Mary of Bethany, the time must come for us to arise and enter the kitchen as did Martha. We cannot simply exhaust ALL of our time in learning. There needs to be a balance between learning and service. This is why Christ will send us out after teaching great promises.

The mother eagle, the Bible tells us, stirs up her nest so that the young eagles will feel uncomfortable and will venture forth to learn how to be an eagle.  So, the Lord does with His people.

Are you still a baby eagle cowering in your nest, or do you soar to the heights of heaven in search of provender?

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

Consider the words from the Collect,  … author and giver of all good things; Graft in our hearts the love of thy Name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of thy great mercy keep us in the same (that is to say keep us in goodness)…

To get anywhere, we must acknowledge in our hearts all good is of and comes from God.  Once we acknowledge this, we are in a position to ask God to put in to our hearts love of Him and all that is His.  We are asking Him to have His Love in our hearts so that we can do good for Him. With His Love in our hearts there is very little we cannot accomplish; without it, we can accomplish nothing good. We have to recognize this and pray continually for God’s love to enter into our hearts and stay in our hearts.

Because of our human nature, there will be plenty of times when we fail, but if we turn back to Him, then we shall succeed. We just have to listen to what He says and then not just listen but act on what He says. This holds true not just for myself, but all of us who follow Christ’s banner.

The clear message in today’s collect, Epistle and Gospel is that we need to be in God and have His Love acting within us. For without His Love within us we can do no good thing and we cannot be regenerated or be “born again” without the help of the Holy Spirit. Being a part of this world and being of God is impossible. As Jesus said, one man cannot serve two masters. We are in this world but we are not called to be of this world but of God.  Before we are of God, we are of this world.  Our life is here, our end is here.  However, once we are transformed via the Holy Ghost, then we are merely sojourners here; our life is not really here and certainly does not end here. We are merely passing through this world as a portal to our new unending life with God.  The only way to be of God is through God, that is His Son, our Lord. I am the way, the truth, the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)  Jesus himself clearly says the only way to be of God is through Him. Nobody comes unto God but by Christ. What does that mean for those of other faiths? Nobody knows but Christ. The only sure way to get into heaven is to follow Christ to the best of ouor ability.

So, recognizing we cannot be a part of this world, we need to be holy, that is, set apart from the world in our thoughts, deeds and actions. Thus, when Paul wrote to the people of Rome, he was writing to all of us; for truly nothing is new in the world. There is truth to Solomon’s saying there is nothing new under the sun[1]. For there is no new sin in the world that has not existed since the time of Adam. It may take different forms over the eons, but all sins are still the same since the dawn of man[2]. Up until the time of Christ, we were still bound in our chains to Satan. We could not pass into the kingdom of heaven, even the Law of Moses could not redeem us, because, on our own we cannot be redeemed. It was only with the coming of Christ we could be redeemed.

He redeemed us through His Death on the Cross and His Resurrection. All three components of God, The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are necessary for our salvation and four our faith. The Father as the one who created us, the Son who died for us, and the Holy Ghost who breaths God’s love and truth and the Word into our hearts.  All three elements of God are active in our ongoing salvation. It is an infinite loop of sorts. God the Father passes His Will to us through the Holy Spirit. The Son, Jesus Christ is our mediator and advocate before the Father. While we do not know exactly each of their functions, we do know all three work together and Jesus is our mediator and advocate to the Father and the Holy Ghost breathes God’s Knowledge into us and believing and acting on what God asks and by what we get from the Holy Ghost brings us to be of God.

Moving on to today’s Gospel, the clear message of the feeding of the multitude is action, and the whys and hows behind all of it does not matter as much as the simple message that He did it. It is all too easy to get wrapped around in fine details, when it is the bigger picture that matters. The clear moral of this story is that He acted, not just talked, but He actually acted and fed the people. It lines up with the collect and the epistle in that if we are to be Christians we need to follow the example that Jesus said, and act on our beliefs and not just say we believe.

That is a model we should follow; not just talk, but act as well.  It serves as a template for our ministries here on Earth, to follow this plan of action and not just diction. Our love for God will be demonstrated through our actions, if we act for Him. Does this story recall the words from the Last Supper used in Holy Communion at the Consecration? He took Bread; and when he had given thanks, He brake it, and gave it to His disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you; Do this in remembrance of me.  Those few words produced The Word, which has satisfied so many over millenniums.  It does not take a lot of words to satisfy us, but they have to be the right ones, which come from Our Lord.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

L

ORD of all power and might, who art the author and giver of all good things; Graft in our hearts the love of thy Name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of thy great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O

 ISRAEL, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.  2 Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips.  3 Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.  4 I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.  5 I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.  6 His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon.  7 They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.  8 Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found.  9 Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.  (Hosea 14)

Our Old and New Testament readings are so much like a back to back instruction manual; a problem-solution formula. In many ways this formula if you would, is what can help a New Testament Christian understand the importance of the Old Testament.  Much of the New Testament passages, especially the letters of Paul and the four Gospels, are direct quotes from Old Testament records, mostly in the fulfillment of prophecy of the coming Savior.

As you read the passage from Hosea you see the promise of the Lord to those who repent. You see a sweet reward to those who turn from their wickedness and live.

In the first verse Hosea beseeches the reader to return to the Lord thy God. And he even explains why, you have fallen by thine iniquity.  How plain is that?

The next two verses Hosea explains how the Lord will heal the iniquity of them who turn to Him and also explains the futility of looking to manmade concepts that will not save them.  Horses, foreign powers or works of their hands will not save us.

Hosea ties this idea up all the blessings that come from being healed of backsliding or turning back to God.  This is very much a visual and scent driven idea.  The shadows that provide cool shade, the life giving corn, the refreshing wine and the fresh smell of cedar or fir trees.  Almost reminds you of that quip; ‘…as fresh as a Carolina pine forest..’   There is something refreshing and cleansing that comes from the scent of pine or fir or cedar.

Then Hosea wraps this whole healing process up with a word to the wise. Who is wise and he shall understand these things? (He who is) prudent and he shall know them. For the ways of the Lord are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.

He writes of all the blessings of coming back to the Lord and then as a final warning he lets us know what happens to those who transgress the Lord. They shall fall.

Look at the other side of this equation: the need to yield oneself to the Lord, in mind, body, and soul…in other words; everything must be given to the Lord.  Because we are His and should always desire to do good.  He became sin for us and by doing that very act on the Cross he made us fit to be alive from the dead and our bodies to be instruments of righteousness unto God.  Wow, what a wonderful idea.

L

ET not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.  13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.  14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.  15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.  16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?  17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.  18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.   (Romans 6:12-18)

As Paul writes this letter we can see that he is looking down through the ages to a time when there will be decisions to be made.  ‘Do I follow God or do I follow the World?’  He frames that concept this way. …know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness…

He doesn’t pull any punches, you either are for God or not, no in between. And no doubt of the consequences of obedience to sin: DEATH.   If you look back at Verse 13 you see that we are delivered from death (the dead). That of course because of the work on the Cross by the death, burial, and resurrection unto LIFE by Christ Jesus.

Paul gives us a positive boost in the last two verses of this passage.

17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.  18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

In conclusion we see what happens when we turn from our wickedness and live as depicted by Hosea’s writings. Then we read what St. Paul wrote as to the promise of following God, not yielding to sin, being alive in Christ and being instruments of righteousness unto God; we are left with a positive note.  Follow God and live.

We understand daily we are to ask God to forgive us of our sins and daily we are to walk in righteousness; because He has forgiven us of those very sins.  This will make us servants of righteousness. The very thing that we are to do as followers of Christ the Lord.

Let us pray:

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that Thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of Thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, the Comfort of the sad, the Strength of sufferers, let the prayers of those that cry out of any tribulation come unto Thee; that all may rejoice to find that Thy mercy is present with them in their afflictions; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

T

HE Lord bless us, and keep us. The Lord make His face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up His countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Seventh Sunday after Trinity

The Bible teaches us that God has called all men to receive his free gift of grace (see John 3:16). And we also understand that those who choose to reject his gift of grace are, …condemned already because [they] hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God (John 3:18). And further, we are aware that while God is love (I John 4:8), he is also holy, just and righteous. And because he is these things, he expects humanity to be likewise. When God told Abraham, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect (Genesis 17:1), he set forth the standard by which all would be judged of him. Yet being perfect is not something that mankind has the capacity to do under the best of conditions unaided by the Holy Ghost. So, we should not be surprised that there is absolutely no hope of pleasing God without a new nature— without being born again of the Spirit. And that new nature can only be obtained in one way. If one is to receive God’s free gift of salvation, then one must believe on the name of Jesus Christ as their Saviour and afterwards, to live in accordance with his word and commandment. If we reject God’s offer of grace and continue living in disobedience then we will suffer his wrath.

The apostle Paul warned of God’s wrath in several of his letters. In our epistle lesson, he noted that, the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness. Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them (Romans 1:18-19). To the church at Ephesus he wrote: (3:5-6).

Scripture makes it abundantly clear that God will pour out his wrath upon those who continue in their sinful ways. But for the faithful Christian, God has other plans. In his first epistle to the Thessalonians, the apostle Paul penned the following words of comfort: For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ (5:9).

Look again at those passages from Romans Chapter 1. God intends to punish the wicked on account of their knowledge of him and not for their ignorance of him. Nevertheless, when you talk to an unregenerated, or a carnal Christian, they love to cite the notion of ignorance as a defense against the coming wrath of God because— as some will say— ‘God will not punish those who did not know about him.’ In their minds it appears to be a valid point, but is that a true statement based upon the Word of God? To answer that question, let us have a look at the issue of ignorance. Upon what is this so-called ‘ignorance’ of God based? The Bible identifies its source. It is of course Satan himself and his jolly band of miscreants who have sought over the millennia to deceive as many souls as they can by fostering within them a state of denial concerning the truth of God’s word written. In the Old Testament, the Devil convinced the majority of people in Israel to reject the word of the patriarchs and prophets. While in the New Testament, he managed to turn many of the Jews against the words and works of our Lord at his first advent, as well as the ministry of the Word since his ascension.

One of Satan’s principal victories can be seen in the growing number of counterfeit bible versions. It has been all too easy for the workers of iniquity who have re-interpreted Scripture via their redactions and amendments to the sacred text. And in the process, they have sown confusion and uncertainty within the church which as destroyed the faith of many. Yet in spite of all that the wicked have done to the Scriptures, no man can truly plead ignorance of God’s presence. As the apostle Paul has written, For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse (Romans1:20). God says that by virtue of his creation, humanity can see his handiwork which has been affirmed by the variety and complexity of the things which are before them. As the noted British scientist, Lord Kelvin once opined, ‘Mathematics and dynamics fail us when we contemplate the earth, fitted for life but lifeless, and try to imagine the commencement of life upon it. This certainly did not take place by any action of chemistry, or electricity, or crystalline grouping of molecules under the influence of force, or by any possible kind of fortuitous concourse of atoms. We must pause, face to face with the mystery and miracle of creation of living creatures.’

Every sinner would rather not think about the existence of God especially when he or she is living in disobedience to his expressed word and commandment. Given what we learned thus far, we should not be surprised at the lengths to which the wicked will go in their denial of the one true and living God. They will embrace every false notion of God, and bow before every image or idol that comes along. And on account of those behaviors, God will darken their hearts in agreement with their choice to reject him as the God of all creation and the Saviour of their souls (Romans 1:21-23). They will then be open to worshiping and serving, the creature more than the Creator (Romans 1:25). That creature— that created being— is the Devil. Over the ages, he has sought to redirect to himself all the worship and glory which mankind was supposed to render to the Godhead. And that, dear friends, has been and remains the basis for all idolatry.

Luke’s gospel account of the temptation of our Lord in the wilderness supplies us with Satan’s testimony: All this power [speaking of the kingdoms of the world] will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore, wilt worship me, all shall be thine (4:6). And the apostle Paul also confirmed the same when identified the forces behind idolatry: What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God… (I Corinthians 10:19-20). All of which is in line with the First and Second Commandments of the Law state, I am the LORD thy God… Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image… Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them… (Exodus 20:2-6).

We ought to disabuse ourselves of the false notion that humanity has somehow changed from the time of the apostles— or from the time of the expulsion from the Garden. Mass man— or the bulk of unregenerated humanity— worships all sorts of things. You name it, and it can become an idol. But when human beings fall into idolatry, God takes away his hand and the evil one comes and infuses his wicked nature into those who have fallen under his spell. And wickedness knows no limits. Consider also the words of the apostle Paul in Romans 1:24-27. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves… For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections… Long ago, God established boundaries regarding the relations between men and women (see portions of Leviticus 18-21). So, when people choose to act in ways that are beyond God’s laws for life— idolatry, whoremongering, inordinate desires of the flesh, etc.— they are, in essence, replacing the will of God with their own. At that moment they have become as gods (Genesis 3:5), and in so doing they will suffer God’s wrath.

It is vitally important Christ’s ministers teach the whole counsel of God to their congregations, as the apostle Paul proclaimed, For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth: to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith (Romans 1:16-17). Unfortunately, a growing number of preachers will not mention the judgmental aspects of God’s word. They are thus content to preach the false gospel of universal acceptance which appeals to the unregenerate who attempt to salve their souls with such. They have been so deceived by the evil one, and so hardened against God’s word written, that they have stopped their ears concerning his warnings regarding their particular lifestyle choices. And on that account, they do not want to hear about that fiery eternity which awaits them if they do not repent and turn unto to Christ.

Friends, I ask you to recall that moment when you came to accept the Lord Jesus as your Saviour. You came to see your old life as God saw it. You had to admit that you had become a minion of the evil one and that you were dead to God. But when you came to know the Lord Jesus as the Saviour of your souls, everything changed. You were transformed. You were made whole in the eyes of God. You were born again of the Holy Ghost. You became citizens of God’s coming kingdom and your names were inscribed in his Book of Life (Revelation 21:27). Paul tells us as much in his first epistle to the Corinthian church: Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived… And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God (6:9-11). And in his epistle to the Romans we are comforted with the following, There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit (8:1).

As born-again Christians, we have been called to proclaim the “good news” of Jesus Christ to all, that they might come out from among the wicked and be made clean by the blood of Christ. We also have been called to remind those of our fellowship that a new life in Christ excludes a continued participation in wickedness. God has called us to make a new beginning— a fresh start— so if we have been born again, we will abstain from all appearances of evil (I Thessalonians 5:22).We have been called to proclaim the Word of God as truth. We have been given a gift of inestimable value in Christ, and we are expected to receive him into our hearts and believe on him as our Lord and Master. Only then can we avoid the wrath which is to come: that all-consuming fire of our righteous and holy God.

Let us pray,

H

OLY Father, comfort and fill us with thy blessed Spirit; and aid us in our daily efforts to communicate the good news of salvation to others, that they too might also escape thy wrath to come; for these things we beg in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Have a blessed week,

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  Wed like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Employment

Much of our country is out of work, please pray the governments will be guided to intelligent action, not reaction.  Pray in particular for Matt Jamieson to find a suitable position after just having found one only to be shut out due to recent events.

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

Thanksgiving

Ditta Cooper was in hospital for AFIB but has recovered and is home.  Please give thanks!

[1] 9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 1:9)

[2] In some respects, this is a key to the Bible. Regardless of our own self-centered thoughts, we are the same people since Adam and will be until the end of time. Thus he who writes the Romans just as well writes to us. We would like to think we are better, but we are not. We are the same. But, on the other hand, that is convenient for what worked for them will work for us.

[3] The average 5-year survival rate for women with non-metastatic invasive breast cancer is 91%. The average 10-year survival rate for women with invasive breast cancer is 84%. If the invasive cancer is located only in the breast, the 5-year survival rate of women with breast cancer is 99%
