The Transfiguration of Christ superseding the Ninth Sunday after Trinity Sunday Report

Today we celebrated the Transfiguration of Christ, the celebration of which superseded the Ninth Sunday after Trinity in the Endless Green Season.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has a few great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Many today will believe what men write and say about the Bible, before they will believe the Bible itself… the political and religious tyranny of the Dark Ages was only possible as long as the scriptures were interpreted for the people by a priest class of language scholars, who burned vernacular versions when they could. Cults characterized by the fact that, while recognizing the Bible as a noble book, they move its authority on to something else… It is invariably something or someone that purports to reveal what the Bible really means. What better way to deceive people than to tell them that they can not read the actual word of God for themselves.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 247-249, with the Collect first:

The Collect.

O

 GOD, who on the mount didst reveal to chosen witnesses thine only-begotten Son wonderfully transfigured, in raiment white and glistering; Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may be permitted to behold the King in his beauty, who with thee, O Father, and thee, O Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth, one God, world without end. Amen.

And the Collect for the superseded Sunday:

The Collect.

G

RANT to us, Lord, we beseech thee, the spirit to think and do always such things as are right; that we, who cannot do any thing that is good without thee, may by thee be enabled to live according to thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle for today comes from Saint Peter’s Second General Epistle, the First Chapter, beginning at the Thirteenth Verse:

I

 THINK it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me. Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance. For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

This morning’s Gospel comes from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, the Ninth Chapter beginning at the Twenty-Eighth Verse:

A

ND it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

The Transfiguration of Christ.

[August 6.]

O

And the Collect for the superseded Sunday:

The Ninth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

G

RANT to us, Lord, we beseech thee, the spirit to think and do always such things as are right; that we, who cannot do any thing that is good without thee, may by thee be enabled to live according to thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect

A blessed truth illuminates the heart and soul of the Christian in the event of the Transfiguration. It is so full of great promises the spirit is overwhelmed in its contemplation.

First of all, it was the full revelation of the only Begotten Son of God to the three disciples present – and to us. They literally witnessed the coming of the Kingdom of God in all its splendor. It revealed His heavenly beauty contrasted against His earthly form.

Secondly, the Transfiguration of Christ is a revelation of the glorified bodies of the saints in the Kingdom to come. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.  (1 Corinthians 15:51-53)

The Christian may behold the glorified Christ in all His wonder within the Temple of a humble and devout heart – the seat of the soul in which our Lord resides for all true believers.

The glorified Transfiguration of Jesus, along with Moses and Elijah, demonstrates the fulfillment of both the Law (Moses) and the Prophets (Elijah). When the cloud once again descended on the three, there was only our Lord left alone of the three. This demonstrates the fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets of the Old Testament in Christ Himself.

The revelation was given to His chosen witnesses. The world cannot behold Him in its present condition; but the day will come when all the world will behold Him either in joy, or in terror and great remorse. Which shall it be for you?

A

ND after six days Jesus taketh with Him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and He was transfigured before them. 3. And His raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. 4. And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus. 5. And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us makethree tabernacles; one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 6. For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid. 7. And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is My beloved Son: hear Him. 8. And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves. 9. And as they came down from the mountain, He charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of Man were risen from the dead. 10. And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean. 11. And they asked Him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come? 12. And He answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of Man, that He must suffer many things, and be set at nought. 13. But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.’. (Mark 9:2-13)

This event follows a stern warning by Christ to Peter after Jesus announces His coming crucifixion

A

ND he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. (Mark 8)

The Sermon

To begin, I would point out an old illustration revealing the beauty of the Transfiguration:

Transfigured Water

A drop of water lay one day in a gutter, stained, soiled, polluted. Looking up into the blue of the sky, it began to wish for purity, to long to be cleansed, and made crystalline. Its sigh was heard, and it was quickly lifted up by the sun’s gentle fingers—up out of the foul gutter, into the sweet air. Then higher and higher; at length the gentle winds caught it and bore it away, away, and by and by it rested on a distant mountaintop, a flake of pure, white, beautiful snow. This is a little parable of what the grace of God does for every sinful life that longs and cries for purity.

JR Miller, DD

We observe a change in Jesus’ demeanor as He approaches His moment of suffering. His seeking the seclusion of the hills, attended only by the innermost group of the faithful three, is a touching token of the strain to which that week had subjected Him.

Look at how Peter’s heart must have filled with thankfulness, notwithstanding the stern rebuke, he was taken with the other two!

There are three stages we can observe in the complex incident which we call the Transfiguration, the:

  1. Change in Jesus’ appearance,
  2. Colloquy[1] with Moses and Elijah,
  3. Voice from the cloud.

Luke, who has frequent references to Jesus’ prayers, tells us that the change in our Lord’s countenance and raiment took place ‘as He prayed’ Luke 9:29 – And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

So far as we know, this was the only time when mortal eyes saw Him absorbed in communion with the Father.

It was only after witnessing this great event wrought by prayer did the Apostles ask Him to teach them to pray at Luke 11:1

And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples

Jesus was transformed and glowing with the Glory of God. Perhaps the glory hidden deep in His soul was made to come to the surface during His earnest prayer and Communion with the Father.

This manifestation was made to appear as a testimony of strength to the apostles, and to us. Faith requires some spiritual evidence in truth, else how could we know and believe?

The two men with whom Jesus taught are noteworthy:

Moses

Who died on Mount Nebo of Pisgah and who was the founder of the Hebrew nation and Law.

Elijah

Who never died but was translated by a chariot of fire and was the restorer of the Hebrew Law.

These two were now gathered about the whole object of their purpose and being, the fulfillment of all the Law and the prophets, the Person of Jesus Christ.

He communed with these two great Old Testament prophets, just as He communes with us in our studies.

Remember Moses was not allowed to enter the Promised Land because of his anger. He saw it from Mount Nebo, but could not cross over Jordan waters.

But just look at the greater land of promise to which Moses went!

It is also noteworthy that three glorious appearances occurred on the Mt of Transfiguration, and that there were three on earth to witness this appearance – James, Peter, and John.

It reminds us of the reference in 1st John 5:

F

OR there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

I believe there is a great mystery buried in this passage of 1 John that escapes our complete understanding at present.

But what was taught by this appearing of the three together?

A

ND Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 6. For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid. 7. And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is My beloved Son: hear Him.

Trust no man but God – no preacher, no deacon, no best friend – only God for the salvation of your precious souls.

The third observance was also meant for the disciples and for us.

This third part of the incident, the appearance of the cloud and the voice from it, was for the disciples. Luke tells us that it was a ‘bright’ cloud, and yet it ‘ overshadowed them.’ That sets us on the right track and indicates that we are to think of the cloud of glory,

This was the cloud that protected the children of Israel from Pharoah’s army, and followed them as a pillar of cloud by day, and fire by night

A

ND the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: 22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, frombefore the people. (Exodus 13:21-22)

We are to think of the cloud of glory, which was the visible token of the divine presence, the cloud which shone lambent between the cherubim, the cloud which at last’ received Him out of their sight.’

Remember, Christ was received into a cloud at His ascending up into heaven, and He shall return in a great cloud of glory:

At His going up into Heaven –

W

HEN they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. (Acts 1:6-11)

A

ND And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; 26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. 27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. (Luke 21:25)

And So Will You!  Amen!

Sermon Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion

Descanso, California

Rev Jack brings the Propers together today.    His sermon can be viewed on video HERE -> https://youtu.be/jsnC100D6mU

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

This Transfiguration is in many ways a strange event, certainly the like of which the world had never seen before and would not see again.  Certainly an exception to Ecclesiastes 1:9’s The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.  For this truly was something new with the Son!

Consider the words from the Collect, wherein we ask God who … grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may be permitted to behold the King in his beauty …

The Collect does not take us where I, at least, would think it would.  We are asking to have our souls be able to withdraw from the noise, clamor and evil of the world which Bishop Cranmer summarizes as the disquietude of this world.  To withdraw means to separate, more on that later.  But to where?  To where we might let our souls behold the King in his beauty.  To behold the King in his beauty is to know the Peace of God.  That Peace which replaces the disquietude with quietude.  To be at peace and rest, something we long for and can only achieve with God’s help via the Holy Ghost.

That leads us into Peter’s words as he nears the end of his time here on earth.  He is at peace with what counts and separated in many respects from the disquietude of the world, set aside, or in another word, holy.  He tells those who have depended on him for guidance he will soon be leaving them for home; they must carry on with the initial guidance he and his companions have given them.  He reminds them they have been given the truth and the light of our Lord Jesus Christ, not a bunch of what he calls cunningly devised fables which were designed to keep them subject to the ways of this world.  We follow the truth Himself our Lord and Saviour Jesus Chris who does not want us to be tied to the ways of this world, but keep our spiritual eyes heavenward to follow that narrow uphill trail towards heaven. He reminds them, and us, this Lord Jesus Christ whom we follow was called My Beloved Son out loud by God Himself at His baptism and again on the Mount at the Transfiguration when we were specifically commanded to listen to him and by inference follow him.  For what good is listening only?

This, of course, leads to Luke’s account of the Transfiguration.  Luke the Physician is often Luke the Historian and this is one of those cases.  Jesus went up to a mountain; interesting he did not go to the temple, is it not?  He took Peter and John and James, those to whom he was closest, and went up to pray.  He knew where he was going, He always did.  While He prayed, His appearance and clothing changed.  This is the outward transfiguration.  You can be sure when He left for the mountain, his clothing was not white and glistering, for in those days nothing was.  There he met with Moses and Elias, not dead but alive.  They talked of the upcoming crucifixion, but once again Peter’s presence was slipping away as he fell asleep, much like he would at Gethsemane.  When Peter awoke, he suggested making three tabernacles or monuments to Jesus, Moses and Elias.  That must have amused Jesus to no end.  Then came the Cloud of God and the VOICE!   This is my beloved Son: hear him. Then, there was just Jesus and his band.

So, what to make of this?

This was a very special and one time event that Peter, John and James were very privileged to be able to attend. The point of this event is that Jesus is who He says He is, the Son of God and the Creator of Earth. Jesus already knew before this event of His upcoming crucifixion, death and resurrection. I believe Moses and Elias spake of these events for the benefit of the apostles attending, as they would have also known Jesus also knew of the upcoming death and resurrection. Peter fell asleep because of his human nature of weakness, something that all of us who are not Jesus share. But we can fight against the human nature with the Help of the Holy Ghost.

And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

Action counts.  For by their actions ye shall know them.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Ninth Sunday after Trinity

Examples

6 August 2023

1 Corinthians 10:1–13 • Luke 15:11–32

The Ninth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

G

RANT to us, Lord, we beseech thee, the spirit to think and do always such things as are right; that we, who cannot do any thing that is good without thee, may by thee be enabled to live according to thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

How is it we learn from examples?

We can and do learn from bad experiences; a bad taste, a burnt finger, a bad smell.  So how do we learn from examples?

In our passage from the first letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul is admonishing a rather randy group of believers to shape up and learn from other’s experiences.  Paul gives the people of Corinth several examples of bad behavior as modeled by the ancestors of these believers, those who left Egypt with Moses.

The city of Corinth was located on the isthmus that would one day have a small canal built across it. This area was a thriving seaport with ALL the sport, vice, corruption, and resident evil humans could put together in one area.  Corinth was well known for its’ vices.

So when Paul was writing to a group of Jewish believers who had settled in that city, he used examples from their past, he pointed to the forefathers and what mistakes they had done; and then just to make it clear, Paul also wrote about the consequences of this behavior.

Remember Jesus gave us many examples during his three and a half years on earth, we know them as parables.   There are stories filled with examples, what to do right, how to avoid the pitfalls of life, and more especially, how to live a Christian life.

Paul gives us three specific examples of those in the desert, three examples that we should also avoid.

Idolatry

Today that can also mean putting too much affection into something or someone that can keep you from your primary affection, worship of the Lord.   Jobs, hobbies, sports, friends, parties, all things that can get in the way and take your eyes off of Jesus.  The above mentions activities are ok, as long as they do not become the central focus of your life, don’t let them come between you and your God.

Sexual Immorality

“Well some things are no longer considered immoral today as they were 50 years ago.” Ah yes, the age of relativity, the beginning of post modern thought.  Civil law can make things legal or illegal, it cannot make things moral or immoral.  If it is prohibited by both the Old and New Testament, it is immoral.   If we leave the social, psychology, and humanist ideals on the shelf, they are not the determinants for what the Bible says is still considered immoral.     Remember, at one time in the Old Testament, throwing your first born child into a fiery furnace to appease Molech was considered the norm by societies that surrounded the Hebrew people. Thanks to Judeo-Christian influence we have gotten away from child sacrifices.  Today we have too many people who think that maybe rules about marriage are passe and all sexual activities outside of marriage is ok, no holds barred.  The only problem is God’s Word tells us to not go that way. We are to either be chaste in our singleness or faithful to one spouse. That one spouse is supposed to be of the opposite gender.  Remember, when God instituted the family in the Garden, it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.

Grumbling

Yikes, that covers a large group of us.  I know that when something isn’t happening fast enough for me, I tend to grumble.  Why do you suppose grumbling was singled out?   For one thing, it calls into question God’s ability to provide for us, IN HIS TIME, NOT OURS.  Also, we show our ingratitude towards our Creator, by not accepting what he has given us, He knows what we need and don’t need.   And I think probably the most important reason grumbling was included in the list of examples…..it causes others to stumble.  When we hear someone grumble about things, especially about God’s work, it can cause us to lose hope.  It can cause us to be downhearted, it isn’t a good thing, sort of a slow poison, that causes others to stop enjoying the blessings of the Lord.

But just in case you were totally discouraged by the three examples, Paul leaves us with a wonderful promise, There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Wow, what a wonderful promise.    Now when we pray together the Lord’s Prayer, let us take to heart the phrase ’…lead us not into temptation….but deliver us from evil.’

Let us take this message to heart, let us avoid evil in any form, let us cling to the Lord, let us put our trust in Him, He that is able to keep us from harm and lifts us up from temptation.

Let us pray,

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being; We, thy needy creatures, render thee our humble praises, for thy preservation of us from the beginning of our lives to this day, and especially for having delivered us from the dangers of the past night. For these thy mercies, we bless and magnify thy glorious Name; humbly beseeching thee to accept this our morning sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; for his sake who lay down in the grave, and rose again for us, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

O

 GOD, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light riseth up in darkness for the godly; Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what thou wouldest have us to do, that the Spirit of Wisdom may save us from all false choices, and that in thy light we may see light, and in thy straight path may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore.   Amen.

Ninth Sunday after Trinity

In II Corinthians 9 the apostle Paul observed that, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver (vv. 6-7). God has called on each of us to give of our substance and wherewithal to provide for our church bodies and to take care of those that are in need particularly those of the household of faith (Galatians 6:10).

In Verse 24 of Proverbs 11 we find godly generosity described as, There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. True and faithful Christians— whether they have been blessed with a lot or a little— will give of their substance because they desire to please God. On the other hand, if an unrighteous person withholds when he or she possesses the ability to give, their lack of charity will result in a curse rather than a blessing. Notice the qualifying expression: more than is meet. What this means is that one is keeping back from God what he could contribute without material injury to himself and his family. In a word, he is being “stingy.”

In the parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:16-21) our Lord warned of just such an estate. The man was described as being rich as he possessed more than enough goods to live on comfortably, but he still desired even more. He did not consider that God had made it possible for him to possess all that he had. And indeed, God does give people the ability to acquire and accumulate wealth. The problem comes when those who have been so blessed will not attribute to God his due. They will not thank him, neither will they recognize their duty to open their hand to others who are in need. They will withhold their gains simply to ingratiate themselves before men. What pridefulness. What arrogance. Notice in verses 20 and 21 how Jesus closed the parable of the rich fool: But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

Returning to Proverbs 11, we find in verse 25 the curious use of the word liberal. The passage states that, the liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered himself. The use of this word in Scripture refers to any person who has within himself a generous nature and readily gives of his own substance to assist those in need. In the Old Testament sense, it referred to providing assistance to a fellow Israelite. In the New Testament, it refers to helping anyone who is in need, but more particularly one who is a fellow in Christ. And God sees our giving and rewards us with his understanding of sufficiency on our behalf. When you do for others, God will do for you. It is not a proverbial tit for tat. Still, it opens the door to God’s “showers of blessings” if one will from the heart give to those of his servants who are in need. While we may not always recognize the things that God is doing on our behalf the refrain of an old hymn will point us in the right direction: “Count your blessings, Name them one by one. Count your many blessings see what God has done.” God calls on us to give out of love for him and for our fellows. He calls on us to give willingly as he is willing to give when we ask of him to satisfy our needs.

And God is interested in our commercial affairs as well. Returning to Proverbs 11 we read in Verse 26: He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it. To assist us with this verse, let us turn to Amos 8:4-7. The prophet was given to pen these words against the wicked of that day who, swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail, saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances of deceit? That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat? The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works. Clearly, God will call into account those who as merchants are guilty of overcharging for their goods and services and who hope to receive a bonus by fraud. Long ago God commanded the Israelites to, do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure. Just balances, just weights… shall ye have… (Leviticus 19:35-36). When people, businesses or governments engage in greedy, malicious and fraudulent behaviors, God will judge those responsible and call them into account for such actions. Revolutions have been fomented on precisely such grounds. The people’s curse can be very harsh when they come to themselves and see just how much they have lost to those who masked their predations with hypocrisy and deception.

And that brings us to another verse from Proverbs 11. Verse 27 states, he that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him. When men seek after God, they will find him ready to receive, redeem and reward them. God has loved mankind with an everlasting love. Why did he go to all the trouble to reach out to humanity across the ages if he did not love us? Why would he go to the lengths that he has done as recorded in both testaments of the Bible? But if we will not diligently seek after him, then we will fall into the Devil’s camp and be lost. The misery of our rejection will be upon our own heads should we turn from his gracious offering which he has made in Christ Jesus to save us from our sins. Part of our diligent seeking after God requires us to avoid trusting in our wealth or in things more than trusting in God. In I St. Timothy 6:17-19, the apostle Paul called on the youthful Timothy to, Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in the uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy: that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. And we find support again in Proverbs 11, for in verse 28 we read, he that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch. The Bible in several places reminds us that the righteous man will flourish. Those who are godly and possess wealth reveal who they are by their fruits. They will willing give as God puts it upon their hearts to do so. And they will rejoice in their giving to help others because they know that God will not leave them if they were to fall.

So then let us also seek godly wisdom and bear fruit of the same in our daily lives. Every thing we do ought be governed by the expression, “Will what I wish to do be acceptable to my heavenly Father? God says that, Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner (Proverbs 11:31). God remembers our thoughts, our words and our deeds. Don’t keep anything back as if you were hiding such from him because you cannot. We will err from time to time as that is part of our nature. But when we err, we ought to confess it to God the Father in the name of his only begotten Son and be forgiven of that error. In that light, if you have erred in withholding, ask God for guidance that you might give to assist your church or those of the faith that are in need. And give not because you feel compelled, but out of gratitude to him who loved us before we ever loved him. Give because God will bless you now and ever after. From the time my son was a small child, my wife and I have given him gifts at Christmastime, his birthday and at other times as well. We did so not because he gave us anything of tangible value but because he was our child and we loved him and he us. God looks on each of us as his children and every day that we have life, food, raiment, shelter, jobs, you name it, he has given to us pressed down and overflowing. We cannot give him anything that approximates what he has done for us. And all God really wants from us is our love for our Lord once said, If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

Do you love God? Do you love his Christ? Are you willing to receive his most holy Spirit? God’s love is ready and waiting. All we must do is accept it by accepting Jesus Christ and then live as he has commanded. Giving to God involves more than money, it involves our whole being. Commit yourselves to Christ’s will today, and be not bound by the lusts of the world, the flesh and the devil.

Let us pray,

O

 MOST holy God, who has loved us more than we could ever in this life understand, give us hearts that will bend to your will and love the things that you love while avoiding those things that you hate; for this we ask in the name of your Son and our Lord and Saviour, even Jesus Christ. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  Wed like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells

While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.

They kept me from going down.   After all the tests were done the Nurse practitioner reviewed over the results. I had one valve replaced about 6 months ago.  But now the other 3 are leaking,    there is not much they can do for me.

We are generally doing good, except that all boundary checkpoint out were tightened again due to the DELTA VARIANT entered the city. On the other side, our members in Tulodan are now experiencing famine due to the effect of the recent continues heavy rains during the month of July to early August which completely destroyed their vegetable plantation.

Diocese of Virginia

Saint Joseph of Arimathea Anglican Orthodox Church is under a lot of stress.  We all are, but they need even more prayer.  Rev Roger Jessup, their wonderful minister, had to retire as he was so pressed by the duties of a primary care giver, in addition to all the worries of this world.  Pray for trust in God for each member of the parish and for them to find economic relief.

Columbiq

I am writing to request your prayers for Colombia, my country. At this moment frightful things are happening, a great diabolical shadow is cast over this nation.

  1. The Constitutional Court in a tyrannical way has decriminalized the crime of abortion in Colombia, even up to six months. This is an illegitimate process, the court is legislating, something that is not within the competence of the judges, on the other hand the issue of abortion was a cause judged in 2006, which is why it should not be judged again in 2022. But socialist groups, international elites, social engineers and feminist groups have not given up on the issue. They want to traffic in death.

  1. The candidate of the extreme left Gustavo Petro is close to become the president of Colombia, this is a man who in his youth was a guerrilla criminal, a vile and despicable man who has always served the interests of drug trafficking, he was an advisor to Chavez who implanted Communism in Venezuela, his second home is Communist Cuba.

  1. The same court approved the movement of Gustavo Petro called: la Colombia Humana, it gave him the status of a political party, with this, he has the possibility of getting to introduce at least 15 congressmen, basically he is close to kidnapping all the powers, he already has the judicial power in his pocket, he only lacks the executive and the legislative. We are close to the precipice, we trust in a miracle of God.

We hope you support us with your prayers, I will ask the brothers to pray unceasingly so that in his mercy we will be saved from these perverse men. God bless you and keep you in all things.

Your servant in Christ,

Bishop José Antonio Rios

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.
