Eleventh Sunday after Trinity Sunday Report
Today was the Eleventh Sunday after Trinity Sunday as the Endless Green Season marches on!
On Point
Someone asked, where do the quotes come from? The answer is from the people who uttered them. But, how did you find them? Oh, that. Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan. He always has a few great ones to share. On to the On Point quotes –

On Love
I will never laugh at anyone for grieving over a loved beast. I think God wants us to love Him more, not to love creatures (even animals) less. We love everything in one way too much (i.e., at the expense of our love for Him), but in another way we love every- thing too little.
No person, animal, flower, or even pebble has ever been loved too much—i.e., more than every one of God’s works deserves.

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.
The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard. It is quite interesting the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States. Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church. Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of the nation.
The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by the minister or in the case of Morning or Evening Prayer without a minister by the senior member present.
The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off. Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.
The Propers for today are found on Page 204-205, with the Collect first:

GOD, who declarest thy almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity; Mercifully grant unto us such a measure of thy grace, that we, running the way of thy commandments, may obtain thy gracious promises, and be made partakers of thy heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle came from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, the Fifteenth Chapter beginning at the First Verse. Paul tells us he is delivering the message he received, the Good News of the Saving Grace of God through Jesus. He points out that if he, who had been Saul the Persecutor of Christ’s Church here on earth could be saved by the Grace of God, then salvation was open to all who would act on their wishes. Thus all who believe on the Name of the Lord Jesus will be saved, if they do not depart from that course.
He recounts the death and resurrection of Jesus; noting the various witnesses to the resurrection, including himself. He goes on to say, if he, who he categorizes as the least of the apostles, not even meet to be called an apostle due to his persecution of the Church of God, can be forgiven and work the Work of God, who cannot? It also explains the willingness of the apostles and those around them to follow Jesus unto death. He was real, not a historical imaginary figure, but a real man, the real God, whose Word was truth and light.

RETHERN, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: and that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: after that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.
Today’s Holy Gospel started in the Eighteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the Ninth Verse. Jesus tells a parable to an audience which apparently consisted of some self-righteous people, which likely fits each of us. The parable is that of a Pharisee[1] and a publican[2] both of whom pray in the temple. While the Pharisee might well have been a “better” man than the publican, he clearly was not the man he thought he was, for he “prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.” Quite the holy fellow. The publican, quite aware of how much he fell short of God’s perfection stood “afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.” Jesus told his audience, “this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” None of us is truly good, we can only strive to be better and look to our Lord to help us. Only through Christ will we be accounted as just before God.

ESUS spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Eleventh Sunday after Trinity
TWO MEN, both way less than perfect, one knows it.

The Collect
As revealed in our Prayer of Collect today, God’s greater virtue and power is demonstrated in His miraculous power to forgive our sins of rebellion and omission. Whatever grace we have is an endowment of grace from God that enables us to keep His Commandments and be accounted righteous by the blood of Jesus Christ. It is thus that we may, with Abraham, attain to the promises made available through the Lord Jesus Christ, and to share, with Him, in the blessed treasures of Heaven. This Collect is unique in specific aspects as are each of the Collects. I wrote a series of devotions a few years back on that uniqueness of each of the daily Collects – their origins and relevance to the Church Calendar, and to our lives. They are gifts to us of the early church fathers, many of whom gave their lives in fidelity to the Word of God.

The Epistle
Paul lays out the means and way of salvation through Christ alone. He, too, had been a Pharisee as we see in the Gospel account today whom Jesus addressed “certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others.” (Luke 18:9) In fact, Paul (as Saul) had been a tool of the Pharisees by which many Christian worshippers had been persecuted and murdered. This will be our context for the Words of Christ today from the Gospel of St. Luke 18:
The Gospel
St. Luke xviii. 9.
A |
ND he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. (Luke 18:9-14)
The Sermon
First of all, we note that Jesus was addressing His remarks to certain men present. Who were these men? Some are in church today. His words were addressed to certain men and women who believed in their OWN righteousness – even to the extent of condemning others and looking down on them. We would call that self-righteousness (and there is no such thing under Heaven). Such would be wise to heed the counsel of Paul to Timothy: “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. (1 Tim 6:17-19)
Secondly, our Lord is speaking of two DIFFERENT kinds of people (a Pharisee and a Publican) – BOTH went up for the seemingly same purpose (to pray). BOTH went t to the right place for prayer – the House of the Lord. But the similarities end with those two facts. Let us examine, now, wherein the characteristics of these two men diverge, and examine our own hearts to learn if we are like unto one or the other of the two:
The PHARISEE
The Pharisee’s ATTITUDE of Prayer
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself. Intimated herein is that the Pharisee stood proudly, and he prayed out of a false perspective. He did not humbly pray to God, but prayed “thus with himself.” His words were not directed to God, truly, but for his own personal purposes which are explained further in the text. He trusted that he was righteous just as millions of Christians do every Sunday at worship. Smug and arrogantly they sit in the pew thinking of those others when the word ‘sinner’ is mentioned. They trust too much in their OWN religion and not upon the imputed righteousness of Christ.
They trust too much in a particular denomination and not the sole grace of God and the sacrifice of His Son.
They feel like they are not “like those others.”
We read of how proudly the Pharisee prayed “with himself” – not to God. He prayed that others might hear his boastful words. The contrary is true of the publican who felt himself unworthy to come so near the Temple. He did not lay claim to ANY GOODNESS, or righteous deeds, in his life but only sought mercy upon himself as a sinner.
The Pharisee’s PRESUMPTION in Prayer
He did not begin by glorifying God, or showing a spirit of repentance for sins he, like us, had surely committed. But, if taken alone, his prayer would have been more fitting than it became when he added his reason for gratitude to God. “ God, I thank thee.” The Pharisee would have been better off to stop right there with that salutation! But he did not!
The Pharisee’s ARROGANCE of Prayer
For what was the Pharisee thankful?
The Pharisee boasts of being thankful for what he is not!
- “I AM NOTas other men are” In other words, “I am better than all others. I am good in, and of, myself.”
- I am not an “extortioner““I have never been guilty of such a sin” (but probably was stained badly thereby)
- I am not “unjust” He is being unjust on the face of his proclamation and his indictment of the publican!
- I am not an “adulterer” He may have been one of those guilty Pharisees who brought the Woman taken in Adultery to Christ who left early because of his guilt.
- I am not “even as this publican.” In other words, “I am not a COMMON sinner as is this publican!”
The Pharisee boasts of being thankful for what he DOES!
- “I fast twice in the week“
- “I give tithes of all that I possess“
In TRUTH, the Pharisee was none of what he claimed as his own:
- In truth: He was a liar! Though he claimed otherwise, he was precisely as other men are – a sinner. (Romans 3:23)
- He was an extortioner. (Matthew 23:14, Mark 12:40)
- He was unjust. His very attitude and self-opinion of himself proved this.
- He was a worse man than the publican for the publican realized his need to which the Pharisee was blinded of his own.
- He did not fast to satisfy a Godly purpose but only for the purpose of show and boasting.
- He did not tithe of all he had for he kept his heart from God by not surrendering it to Him. (Luke 20:25)
- He had a religious zeal, but not according to the Bible. “….they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. (Romans 10:2-3)
The PUBLICAN
And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.”
1) The publican knew who he was – a lost sinner and condemned.
2) The publican knew his place with God without mercy – at a distance!
3) The publican knew how he felt – guilty, ashamed and needing mercy.
4) He knew WHAT he needed – MERCY.
5) He knew how to attain mercy – repent, confess, and call upon the Lord.
6) He knew of his salvation – went down to his house justified.
There is a great secret revealed, too, in this Parable – sin causes a great separation from man and God. The only means to bridge that separation is repentance and confession of sins. When we have betrayed or hurt a close friend, do we not avoid looking them in the eye until we have reconciled ourselves to that friend? We may not speak to that friend for months due to our guilt. The friend may not even be aware of our guilt, BUT WE ARE! When we forget God, we live according to our own prerogatives. This free will always leads to sin. That sin raises a wall between us and God. Suddenly, we are ashamed as was Adam in the Garden. We cannot tear down that wall with our good deeds, but only by our tearful cries for mercy!
Do we mark our offering envelopes at church with large letters to show our great tithing? Do we embellish our prayers with beautiful words that do not come from the heart, but from a proud mind? Do we attempt to seem so close to God that publicans cannot approach Him? Do we admit our unworthiness apart from God’s grace? Have we known that the very moment we feel that we are “good enough” is the very moment that we are NOT? Do not be a pharisaical hypocrite, but be a humble sinner who lays claim to grace and mercy in God. Which of the two are we most alike – the Pharisee, or the Publican?
Better be a lowly Publican than a proud Pharisee! AMEN!
Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action
Church of the Faithful Centurion

Rev Jack brings the Propers together today. His sermon can be viewed on video HERE -> https://youtu.be/-G8_Q_zixG0
Today’s sermon tied the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together. Consider the words from the Collect, wherein we ask God … who declarest thy almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity; Mercifully grant unto us such a measure of thy grace, that we, running the way of thy commandments, may obtain thy gracious promises, and be made partakers of thy heavenly treasure; …
Once again, this Collect is kind of a follow-on to the last few weeks’ Collects. First, we acknowledge God’s power which is manifested not in terror, but in mercy and pity on our failures. We should note God has chosen to grant kindness and mercy to us; not the punishment we truly deserve. In this mercy, He shows His Almighty Power. It is important to note; with all the power in and of the universe, God manifests His Power by showing infinite mercy and kindness to us, not in causing us more tears. He does not act like an imperfect human would in his position. Most humans are not capable of showing such mercy and kindness to others, not without the help of God and the Holy Ghost. He is far kinder to us than we could ever possibly deserve. He provides the ultimate example of how we should act when great power and responsibility is given to us to handle. Like the servant of Matthew 18:23, we too often we act irresponsibly with said power and responsibility. Given our fallen nature we choose to cause misery rather than kindness. We must resist this choice and choose to show kindness to others rather than misery. However, if we truly are following God’s will then we must choose to be kind rather than evil, and do good deeds with the help of the Holy Ghost, and resist our fallen nature. This leads into the Collect.
Thus, the Collect goes on to ask His Help in following His Commandments so we might gain the good which comes from following His Will. This is a unifying theme found throughout all of the collects for a good reason. In order to get the good which comes from following Him, we first need to follow Him. We cannot achieve good results if we do not follow Him. Following requires active action as opposed to passive action. Action, not just diction as the tag line to many of my sermons go. We should recognize the good which comes from acting and choose to continue to act for Him as opposed to our natural tendency to go astray. Following His Commandments is a sure way to stay on the course set for us, if we follow the Scriptures and His Commandments and take them to heart.
We have to not just talk the talk, but actually walk the walk. It can be extremely difficult; but this is what God has called us to do. He calls us to perform actions in alignment with His Word, in order to spread His Word. We cannot effectively spread His Word if we are not in alignment with His Word. The reason we have trouble with this is that we are imperfect creatures with not just free will, but manifold, perhaps rampant free will, the norm is to choose what we want, not what we need, then we come to calamity. We are each grievous sinners, some worse than others, none better. Yet, we all come before God equal in our sinful state. In equally big trouble, some more, none less. We are all equal by virtue of the fact we are hopeless sinners without the saving grace and faith of Christ. It is only through His Faith we are saved. Not our faith, but the faith of Christ who dwells within us.
This is the point Saint Paul is making when he says that first he gave unto us[3] that understanding he got directly from God as to the role of Jesus Christ. He recounts some of the factual information about Jesus’ time here on earth after the crucifixion, the descent into hell and the resurrection. He confirms the story of the Gospel as told to him. He notes the various witnesses, still alive or recently passed away. He makes the point we must propagate the Gospel so others might believe. In order to truly spread the Gospel, he infers our actions must be congruent with Scripture. He tells us we are saved by faith alone. The point is that we need to make sure that our actions lead people towards God and Jesus and not away from them.
Our faith? Partly, but not chiefly and not first. Then, by whose faith are we saved?
We are saved by the perfect faith of Christ, our only mediator and advocate before the Father. It is not by our faith, but the faith of Him who dwells within us, that of Christ. Without Christ, we could not have any faith to begin with. The perfect faith of Christ allowed a single sacrifice to be made one time, to cook the books and account for the sins of all mankind for all time. His is the faith which saves us and our faith in Him allows Him to operate in us.
Because of their refusal to allow Him in, those who do not have the Holy Ghost in them do not believe in Him. The Holy Ghost will not enter into those who disavow Him. God will not force His Way in. We have to first ask Him to enter, then only then will He enter. God does not force His Way on people and neither should we. If people refuse, then we should to paraphrase Jesus, shake the dust off our shoes and let them be. We are not called to force our beliefs on those who do not want to hear them. That would be contrary to His Message.
Another thing to consider is Jesus is real, He is Who He says He IS. He is not a fictional character, he is not a great teacher. He is THE SON OF GOD and He came to save us: body, heart, mind and soul. There is no other way to view Him that makes as perfect sense as this[4].
If that is not enough to turn your heart, consider the parable of the publican and the Pharisee related by Saint Luke. The man who was proud of his performance was not the example Jesus chose for the one justified, rather the one who acknowledged his failures and asked God for forgiveness and help. This is to point us as an example of who we should be like. It can be said with confidence it is not the Pharisee. Think of these examples and who would we rather be like, the publican, or the Pharisee? Remember, the Pharisee’s job consisted of finding clever ways around the 613 Mosaic Laws. The publican was looking for help in actually following two:
Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith.
T |
HOU shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. BCP Page 69
And, just as importantly, he was not looking for ways around those two laws, he was looking for help to follow God and forgiveness when he fell short. In our day to day lives, let us strive to be more like the publican and less like the Pharisee. Let us follow the publican’s example and look for help to follow God and ask for His Forgiveness when we inevitably fall short.
Let us ask God for the help we need to follow His Will. For we must have His Help to act as we must here on earth!
Action counts. For by their actions ye shall know them.
Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail. The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.
The time is now, not tomorrow. The time has come, indeed. How will you ACT?
It is by our actions we are known.

IKEWISE the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Comfort V 26–27
In our groanings and problems internally, we have the help of God’s Spirit in our weakness, who intercedes for us ‘according to the will of God’.
Can we find comfort in the fact that the Holy Spirit will intercede for us when we don’t even know the purpose? He will intercede when we are utterly clueless about what is happening to us at the time.
He who searches the hearts of mankind knows what is the mind of the Spirit. He knows what is right for us at any given time, because he intercedes for us according to the will of God.
When we consider our next move during times of crisis, chaos, and infirmities, the Spirit makes intercession for us in a language we don’t know. “groanings which cannot be uttered.”
We must seek the comfort God has provided for us through the Holy Spirit.
Called V 28–30
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
Those whom God has called can be absolutely certain that, in God’s sovereign purpose, everything will work together for their good.
Their salvation is not an accident. God planned it in eternity, performed it in time, works it out in time, and will eventually perfect it in eternity. We may not understand why God chose us, but it is certain; that our standing in Christ is absolutely watertight because of who He is and because He has chosen us and planned our way.
For many, the previous three verses, are tough ones to get our human mind around. We always want to be in control. We don’t like it when someone, especially God takes control. This passage erases that concept. He is in control, has been since the beginning, and will be to the end. It is God’s purpose, not ours, He is our Creator, He is our Lord, it is His plan that does control the universe, not us. This certainty of salvation should bring comfort to us, especially when we are alone and lost in our doubts. “… according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;... (Titus 1:1b-3)
If you take time to study the Word of God and focus on such terms as God’s sovereignty, salvation, security of faith/salvation, you will read over and over again, God’s plan for us, not our plan for God. Very humbling, to say the least.
Conquerors V 31–39
A whole range of problems, trials, disappointments, and suffering will come against the child of God. In all this he is to remember that God ‘did not spare His own Son’ but freely gave Him for us, and freely gives us all other things that we need. With God on our side as our Justifier, our Intercessor, our Lover, and our Keeper, we are more than conquerors ‘through Him who loved us’. Once saved by Christ, nothing at all in the past, present or future, and nothing on this earth or anywhere else is able to ‘separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord’. We conquer because we have the Conqueror living within and working for us. Now let the Word of God show us the plan…
“… What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?… For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord…
And if God is there in the worst of it, He is there through all of it. …Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us…
Paul reminds us again of the great sacrifice that God the Father gave… …. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
And now the final surety of it all, our eternal Salvation: ...Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?..
Some days we seem to be lost as far as what we think we are supposed to be doing with our lives. Today, being the last Sunday before school starts for many of you, here are some thoughts to consider. The time and energy that you spend in the ‘trenches’ never seems to pay back. There are days, weeks, and months of frustration, lack of progress, pressure from above, test scores, state scores, etc. And yet each year, yes each day, we have to opportunity to shape the minds and lives of those young people we are charged with teaching. It may seem like a thankless task at times, and at times an endless task, but one day, it should pay off. The most important aspect of your job is that you execute it with honesty, faithfulness, and integrity. If God be for us, who can be against us?
I trust that this year will be a successful year, that you are kept from harm, and that you will know that God is with you in all that you do.
Let us pray:
A |
LMIGHTY God, we beseech thee, with thy gracious favour, to behold our universities, colleges, and schools, that knowledge may be increased among us, and all good learning flourish and abound; bless all who teach and all who learn; and grant that in humility of heart they may ever look unto thee, who art the fountain of all wisdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O |
GOD, whose nature and property is ever to have mercy and to forgive; Receive our humble petitions; and though we be tied and bound with the chain of our sins, yet let the pitifulness of thy great mercy loose us; for the honour of Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Advocate. Amen.
T |
HE Lord bless us, and keep us. The Lord make His face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up His countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon
The Steel Minister is back from his quadruple bypass surgery on 6 July 2023!
We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon. If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth. This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.
Eleventh Sunday after Trinity

UT woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. 14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. 15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. 16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! 17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? 18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. 19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? 20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. 21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. 22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. 23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. 25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. 26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. 29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, 30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. (Matthew 23:13-31)
In the Gospel according to Matthew, our Lord pronounced several woes upon the scribes and Pharisees. They were supposed to be the spiritual leaders among the people. They were supposed to explain to their less-learned fellows what God expected from each of them. Sadly, these so-called “learned” men did not measure up to God’s expectations in that cause. Their teachings were restricted solely to those interpretations which supported their jaded religious views. Their hardheartedness was made plain on several occasions as documented within the pages of the Bible, and as a result our Lord rebuked them in terms which cut them to the quick.
First
Our Lord said, But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in (v. 13) This charge was not only a condemnation of their failure to enter the God’s kingdom themselves, but of their efforts to prevent others from entering as well. If you remember from Numbers 14, the children of Israel rebelled against God and refused to go into the promised land because of the false testimony of ten of the twelves spies which Moses had sent in by order of the LORD (Numbers 13:1-3). Ergo, one ought not to rely on simple numbers to prove a particular point because in many situations the majority isn’t always right, much less righteous. The old expression, “everybody’s doing it” does not often transform whatever is being planned or carried out into something that is wholesome, or even legal. And our Lord called them hypocrites because they did indeed know the truth, but refused to proclaim it.
Second
Our Lord revealed their religion to be of a deceptive and grasping nature when he said, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation (v. 14). Devouring the poor, especially taking advantage of women whose husbands had died, in order to extract anything of valuable from them is disgraceful to say the least. Our Lord likened such men to ravening wolves (Matthew 7:15) on account of their rapacious and grasping natures. He further warned them that they would face an even harsher judgment for their maleficent conduct. God hates theft regardless of who is doing it.
Third
Our Lord presented his detractors as zealots in the cause of religion— but not God’s religion— when he said, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves The devil has worked with great efficiency to direct as many as he may influence to join his camp. Theodore Roosevelt once noted that, ‘to educate a person in the mind but not in morals is to educate a menace to society.’ No doubt we have witnessed such in our day. In our schools, children are taught via evolution that they are nothing but animals— higher end animals but still animals nonetheless. Should we then be surprised if they then act like animals? Our society is fast becoming a “dog-eat-dog” world where anything goes and where there are no limitations on the human appetite. Our Lord spoke against those men who would do all they could to find a convert or win someone over to their religion; but as they themselves had no real faith in God, their teachings would make that new believer into a person who was more virulent than themselves in opposition to the will of God.
Fourth
Our Lord dealt with their blindness in spiritual matters when he said, Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing: but whosoever shall swear by the gold in the temple, he is a debtor! Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? (vv. 16-17) The scribes and Pharisees were very much enamored with the wealth that the temple possessed. They thought of it more than the principal behind the temple. Their religion was one based upon materialism what they could see and touch. If they had possessed a heart for God’s word they would have understood that it was not the appointments which adorned the temple that were important; but God himself who had directed Solomon to construct the temple for his glory and not the glory of man. In verses18 through 22, a similar message was conveyed— that it was not the appurtenances of the temple that were most important, but the personage of God behind their use.
Fifth
Our Lord dealt with the specifics of his detractors’ giving under the law when he said, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone (v. 23). The law supplied the children of Israel with a list of things they were to do in grateful service to God and thus be blessed. But these men had turned their religious duties into a “which-is-easier-to-do” exercise. It was easy to offer up the materials God required of them, but it was a whole lot harder for them to give God their hearts in obedience to his commandments. Yes, they were to supply the materials called for in the law. Still, they were to bring their hearts, souls, and minds along as well in thanksgiving for all God had done for them and their ancestors (Deuteronomy 6:5). This they did not do.
Also, if they had indeed loved God, they would have exercised judgment, mercy and faith. Judgment requires a mindset of doing what is right as defined by the law. Mercy requires us to possess a heart dedicated to discerning whether or not leniency would serve better than severity in dealing with others. Faith calls on us to believe God over the world, the flesh and the devil. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). The law was of little value without a trusting faith in him who is its author. Why bother with the precepts of the law if you really do not accept that there is a God after all? God was not real to those men. For if he had been, then they would have taken a different path. They would have obeyed the commandments from the heart. Jesus said, He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God (John 8:47).
Sixth
Our Lord also criticized them for being so blind to the truth of God that they would, strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel (v. 24). They would clean the outside of a vessel but not the inside (vv. 25-26) and that opened them up to all manner of corruption and sin. And because their religion was corrupted, our Lord called them, whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity (vv. 27-28). The scribes and Pharisees worked hard to ‘appear’ righteous. They sought to use their positions within their communities to mask who they really were. Our Lord saw them as they were and not what they pretended to be. It is one thing to see the outside of any thing but what lies beneath the exterior? A house may look great on the outside, but unless you are careful to have a home inspection, you may find it full of termites in the interior.
Seventh
Our Lord’s final woe: because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets (vv.29-31). Jesus knew them all too well. For God had called the prophets to preach to the people regarding their misdeeds and trespasses. He called them to be witnesses for him against the wicked souls of their generation and that is why they were slain by those men. Our Lord accused the scribes and Pharisees of possessing the same mindset as their ancestors regarding their resistance to God’s messengers. And such was clarified in an earlier chapter of Matthew’s gospel where our Lord was confronted by a group of Pharisees from Jerusalem who questioned him saying: Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? (15:1-2) Jesus responded with a question, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? (v. 3) Without a doubt, their earthly fathers were more important to them than their Father in heaven, and Jesus wanted them to see their error in thinking. Who should be more important: God or man?
We ought not allow the devil to shake our faith in God and in his Christ via secular and profane reasoning. Neither should we permit a secular or profane person to have standing in our minds and hearts ahead of our good and gracious God. We cannot truly be of the Christian faith if we have no faith in Christ as our Saviour and Lord. For if he is your Saviour and Lord, then you will heed his commandments and do them from the heart. The scribes and Pharisees of our Lord’s earthly ministry were hypocrites. They did not truly believe in God neither did they see life through his lens of scripture. They possessed a mere appearance of righteousness, all the while grasping up what they could of the recognition, wealth and fame their titles afforded to them. Our Lord’s message to them was like a light on a cockroach— once turned on, they attempted to scurry into the darkness. Let that not be said of us. Let us then live in obedience to God’s word and commandment knowing that in our sincerity he sees us and will care for us because we truly love him and are seeking to please him via our lives lived in his service.
Let us pray,
H |
OLY Father, deliver us from all false pretence in our worship and in our living; that through our obedience to thy word and commandment, we will show forth that light which is within all who are born again of the Holy Ghost; for this we ask in the name of Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
Have a blessed week, Bryan+
People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.
The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.
Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?
No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.
What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.
How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.
What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.
Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!
Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.
Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells
While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.
The most common cause of death related to multiple myeloma is infection, with pneumonia being the most common fatal infection. Other common causes of death are bleeding (from low platelet counts), complications of bone fractures, kidney failure, and blood clots in the lungs.

Michael Baran – End stage congestive heart failure. 20 March 20 at 10:56 AM To all my friends and family I had to go to the hospital in Rochester NY where I had my implant mechanical heart assist pump placed in my abdomen. I have end stage heart failure. On Wednesday I had to go to the hospital I was in need of a wheelchair I was very weak and I needed to have someone push me because I got short of breath, and I was so weak, I needed assistance to get up out of the wheelchair. I had to do a walk test and I had to have help to stand up my blood pressure was so low. I fell back In to the wheel chair. I tried to walk after they got me up and was able to use the hand rail and walk about a hundred feet there were two aids behind me I had to stop and nearly collapsed. They kept me from going down. After all the tests were done the Nurse practitioner reviewed over the results. I had one valve replaced about 6 months ago. But now the other 3 are leaking, there is not much they can do for me.
Yesterday I prayed that if God didn’t need me here. to take me home. I long to be free of this old body and to see my Lord, my family and friends that have gone on to their rewards, to be with them evermore. I told the Lord if he needs me here then he needs to renew my strength so that I can walk.
I woke up this morning and felt good. I got up to go to the bathroom and to my surprise I did not struggle to stand up!!! I actually walked to the bathroom without a walker. I am back in bed crying as I write this to you as the Holy Spirit brought to my mind Isaiah 40:31 ..Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength and shall soar on wings like eagles they will run and not grow weary they shall walk and not faint.
I have been unable to walk more than 100 ft or so, for the last six months in the last two weeks my oxygen saturation was as low as 74 and unable to walk without a walker. have a lift chair-recliner in the TV room. I am now able to get up without it.!!!
My God is an awesome God he has heard my prayers and has indeed strengthened me.!!!

Columbiq
I am writing to request your prayers for Colombia, my country. At this moment frightful things are happening, a great diabolical shadow is cast over this nation.
- The Constitutional Court in a tyrannical way has decriminalized the crime of abortion in Colombia, even up to six months. This is an illegitimate process, the court is legislating, something that is not within the competence of the judges, on the other hand the issue of abortion was a cause judged in 2006, which is why it should not be judged again in 2022. But socialist groups, international elites, social engineers and feminist groups have not given up on the issue. They want to traffic in death.
- The candidate of the extreme left Gustavo Petro is close to become the president of Colombia, this is a man who in his youth was a guerrilla criminal, a vile and despicable man who has always served the interests of drug trafficking, he was an advisor to Chavez who implanted Communism in Venezuela, his second home is Communist Cuba.
- The same court approved the movement of Gustavo Petro called: la Colombia Humana, it gave him the status of a political party, with this, he has the possibility of getting to introduce at least 15 congressmen, basically he is close to kidnapping all the powers, he already has the judicial power in his pocket, he only lacks the executive and the legislative. We are close to the precipice, we trust in a miracle of God.
We hope you support us with your prayers, I will ask the brothers to pray unceasingly so that in his mercy we will be saved from these perverse men. God bless you and keep you in all things.
Your servant in Christ,
Bishop José Antonio Rios

For Our Country
Our country has lost its way. Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take. Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them. Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God. Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down. Down, into the depths of the pit. Pray people will recognize there is:
- One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
- All religions are not equal;
- All ways of life are not equal;
- The Bible holds the Key to Life;
- All rights come from God, not the State;
- Good;
- Bad;
- Evil;
- Right;
- Wrong;
- Allah is the Devil;
- Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.
Pray this recognition will not come too late. Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.
Persecuted
Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India. Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy. Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

[1] Pharisee – One of a sect or party among the Jews, noted for a strict and formal observance of rites and ceremonies and of the traditions of the elders, and whose pretensions to superior sanctity led them to separate themselves from the other Jews.
[2] Publican 1. (Rom. Antiq.) A farmer of the taxes and public revenues; hence, a collector of toll or tribute. The inferior officers of this class were often oppressive in their exactions, and were regarded with great detestation.
Literally a Publican is one who farmed the taxes (e. g., Zacchaeus, Luke 19: 2) to be levied from a town or district, and thus undertook to pay to the supreme government a certain amount. In order to collect the taxes, the publicans employed subordinates (5: 27; 15: 1; 18: 10), who, for their own ends, were often guilty of extortion and peculation (defrauding the public by appropriating to one’s own use the money or goods entrusted to one’s care for management or disbursement; embezzlement). In New Testament times these taxes were paid to the Romans, and hence were regarded by the Jews as a very heavy burden, and hence also the collectors of taxes, who were frequently Jews, were hated, and were usually spoken of in very opprobrious terms. Jesus was accused of being a “friend of publicans and sinners” (Luke 7: 34).
[3] Though Paul was writing to the people of Corinth, the information is just as applicable to us, perhaps more so now than ever before.
[4] This is the Trilemma of Jack Lewis in Mere Christianity – I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.
