Third Sunday after the Epiphany Sunday Report

Today was the Third Sunday after the Epiphany:

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Screwtape[1] on Moderation

Make him doubt whether the first days of his Christianity were not, perhaps, a little excessive. Talk to him about ‘moderation in all things’. If you can once get him to the point of thinking that ‘religion is all very well up to a point’, you can feel quite happy about his soul. A moderated religion is as good for us as no religion at all—and more amusing.

The Screwtape Letters

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

John 15:10

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

I Corinthians 10:23

I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?

Luke 6:9

How was it that Noah persevered in building the ark? He stood alone amidst a world of sinners and unbelievers. He had to endure scorn, ridicule, and mockery. What was it that nerved his arm, and made him patiently work on and face it all? It was faith. He believed in a wrath to come. He believed that there was no safety, excepting in the ark that he was preparing. Believing, he held the world’s opinion very cheap. He “counted the cost” by faith, and had no doubt that to build the ark was gain.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard.  It is quite interesting the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States.  Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church.  Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of the nation.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by the minister or in the case of Morning or Evening Prayer without a minister by the senior member present.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle for today came from the Twelfth Chapter of Paul’s letter to the Romans beginning at the Sixteenth Verse.  The Epistle shows the way to Christian action in life.  Paul lays out a hard path, but one that goes where we want to be in the end.

B

E not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

The Holy Gospel for today came from the Second Chapter of the Gospel of Saint John beginning at the First Verse.

A

ND the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: and both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six water-pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the water-pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, and saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

 HEN therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. And he must needs go through Samaria. Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. (John 4:1-14)

Though the Gospel text today covers only the first fourteen verses of Chapter 4 of the Gospel according to Saint John, we may not do justice to the text without covering the first 42 verses.

Thirst is a powerful hunger – a hunger for water. A man or woman cannot live more than a few days, or even hours, without the benefit of water. Water is necessary for life. This principle holds true across both the physical and spiritual realms. Men will run, walk, and finally crawl across the desert sands to find water. The desire for physical life is quite strong. Should the desire for that spiritual life that is eternal not be more so?

Water is a compound comprised of two elements – Oxygen and Hydrogen. Oxygen is essential for fire (combustion) and hydrogen is an explosive gas, yet, when combined as H20, water is capable of extinguishing fires. Spiritual Water can extinguish the fires of Hell itself.

You may recall poor Hagar, the concubine of Abraham, being sent out alone with her young son into the desert Wilderness with only a bottle of water upon which to survive. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation. And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink. (Gen 21:14-19)

It is noteworthy Hagar was oblivious to the well of water until God opened her eyes to see it though it was there all along.

In today’s text, we see that Jesus has made it a particular point to divert the journey from the usual circumvention of Samaria to go directly to a city at the base of Mt Ephraim  called Sychar (Sheckham in the Old Testament) . This is the burial place of Joseph and the city of Jacob to whose Well Jesus arrives at the noon hour and sits upon the stone casing of the Well. He came to this place wittingly for He knew that He would meet a particular Woman here today.

A Samaritan Woman of ill-repute approaches at the unusual hour of noon with her water bottle to draw from the Well. Jesus asks the Woman for a drink of water. The woman is taken aback by the request of Jesus because He appears to be a Jew and the Jews hate the Samaritans. But this man seems somewhat mysterious. She wonders at His appearance.

Have you ever wondered why Christ, the Lord of Heaven cares for you and will request your love? Have you wondered why He would bother to give you the time of day?

We may learn from the approach of Christ to this Woman in personal evangelism which resulted later in broader evangelism to the entire village at Sychar. We may sometimes feel ‘uncomfortable’ in raising the subject of Christ to a stranger. Here, Christ points the way. Put the person at ease with a casual remark as Jesus’ request for water. We all want to share the blessings of Heaven. Here is our best example of personal evangelism.

There seems to be seven principles of personal evangelism represented in this exchange with the Woman:

  1. We must have face-to-face contactwith the sinner. Though the Jews had no contact with Samaritans, Christ harbored no such prejudice or resentment. He traveled across a great distance and over dry and dusty roads for this meeting. If Christ did not go to the place where the Woman was, she would never have received Him or known Him.
    1. If we are to be fishers of men, we will catch few in a barrel. We must go to the Sea of Life.
    2. Our problem in planting seed may not be the lack of good ground, but that we have left the seed in the silo. “Is the seed yet in the barn?” (Hag 2:19)
    3. Do not equate separation with isolation. Christ talked to sinners far more than those who were Godly .Even in war, we must mix with the enemy in battle. However, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness.” (2 Cor 6:14)
    4. Our contact must be across age considerations as well as social concerns. Jesus said in Mark 16:15 – “Go into all the world.

  1. Establish a common interest.  See how Christ does so with the Woman. She came desiring water to quench her thirst. Christ also indicates a desire for water. “Give me to drink.” This demonstrated to the Woman a common interest shared by the two of them.
    1. Christ immediately built a bridge which connected the interest of the Woman with His own. Once a bridge is built, much traffic may cross thereon.
    2. One common interest may expand into others of greater import. Jesus has a special kind of water – the Water of Life. It is precisely the kind of water this Woman thirsts after even without knowing.

  1. Emphasize the spiritual over the physical. Every human needs temporary benefits for life but, to a greater extent, we need everlasting provision for eternal life. We may accomplish this through
    1. Our example – Jesus speaks with courtesy to the woman and she can detect His great sincerity.
    2. Our actions – Christ treated even abject sinners with compassion and respect. The words of Christ drew at first on the physical, but transitioned smoothly to the spiritual (from physical water, to water of life).

  1. Measure your pace – do not get ahead of the understanding of your party. See how Jesus teaches from the known to the unknown: Well Water to Heavenly Water; Worship at Mt. Ephraim to Jerusalem; the perfect means of worship (Spirit and in Truth)

  1. Do not be judgmental.
    1. Jesus did not dwell unnecessarily on the fact that this woman was an adulteress. He came to save and not to condemn.
    2. Preach against sin, but do not close the door to salvation to the sinner. The Door belongs to Jesus. The emphasis must be on the seriousness of sin, but also the availability of forgiveness.

  1. Keep the Main Thingthe Main Thing! Be persistent in adhering to the point.
    1. The Samaritan Woman tried to turn the conversation from her sins and need of forgiveness to worship
    2. Christ answered her question but went straight back to her need of Him as the Savior.

  1. Be Direct – people do appreciate honesty. If we try to be politically correct, we will not be good witnesses of Christ. He is exceptional and exclusive (not common and inclusive).

Do not argue over issue beyond the party’s ability to comprehend (ie prophecies of Revelations).

Please consider the result of Jesus’ encounter with the Woman at the Well: it led to many of the Samaritans accepting Christ. One Seed planted begets much fruit.

Remember, sharing the Gospel releases us from personal liability for a soul. We plant the Seed. Leave its germination to God and Hos Holy Spirit. We may witness to one today and seemingly lose that person to the devil, but years later, the seed sprouts and that person comes to Christ because of that word you shared years ago.

Have you shared with one at the Well of Christ lately?

Good morning! I hope you are all doing well. In today’s sermon we will be looking at the unifying message of the Collect, Epistle and Gospel and examine how they share the common message of action as we celebrate the revealing of our Lord to the world.  Let us start by reading today’s collect:

The Third Sunday after The Epiphany.

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Consider these words from the Collect:

… mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us …

In the Collect, we are asking God to set aside our failures and protect and aid us in all we do with His strong hand.  God is perfect, thus so is His counsel.  When we acknowledge our imperfection and ask Him for help, we should look to the written record of His Son, our Savior; the ultimate example of perfection and we should be doing do our best to follow Him, by being honest, hard working, peaceful and helpful.  When we do this, we will prosper; not only in this world, but in our hearts. It will not only improve our own lives as a result but of those around us. This is a winning situation for everybody! When we pray for His Help, we need to listen for the answer, then act on it, not ignore it because it is not the answer we wanted. This is a very common theme throughout the collects and by extension, the Bible. As we have always the same problems, we have the same need, which is to turn to God for help!

In the Epistle, Paul counsels us to not repay our fellow men’s evil with evil but to do right as much as possible in a given circumstances. This is another concept that is easier said than done but it is something that must be done all the same. Repaying evil with evil only makes situations worse, not better and that is something we need to realize. If we do right in a given situation, then it will be on the other person for acting poorly and not us. He also says that God will reap vengeance on evildoers and it is not for us to deal vengeance out. He also says we need to be honest and forthright in all our dealings as is befitting our children of God status. He points out if we give kindness and honesty even to those who we do not like or get along with, that will be truly more satisfying for us then any kind of imperfect revenge or sabotage we can come up with. It will in the end be on their own heads for refusing our hospitality and kindly actions. He says we are to live peaceably with all men for as much as lieth within us. This does not mean we should be doormats, but rather we should treat our neighbors kindly up until they point they attempt to take our things or our lives, at that point we can do what is needed to defend ourselves from the threat. But other than that, we are to treat our neighbors the way we would like to be treated. This follow’s Jesus “Love they neighbor as thyself commandment.” And it shows that we are to treat all of our neighbors and fellow humans this way to the best our abilities unless as stated above they try to take our things or harm us. It really is the best way to live our lives here on Earth. However if we are to  live this commandment, we need to follow our nice words to our neighbors up with actions.

Which brings us to the next point, why are we always emphasizing action?  There is a simple reason for this.  In the space of time where we exist, where we are, is Today. Where God’s finger touches the line of time. Not tomorrow nor the past, but today. We can’t go back in the past or go forward to the future and act there, our actions have to be done in the present.  Actions are how we live out our faith.  Without actions there is no evidence of our faith that people can see. That is why worrying does nothing productive. We should focus on what we can do in the present, rather in the past we cannot change nor the future which is unknown. Acting in the present is far more productive than worrying about places we cannot act in like the past or unknown like the future.

Our God is a God of Action.  No less is His Son one of action.  All throughout the Bible, you find Jesus doing things, not just talking about them. His messages all convey action. Jesus did not just talk nice words, he backed them up with action. This is why we emphasize action. To truly follow Christ requires us to be like Him within the best our abilities and with the Help of the Holy Ghost, perform actions.  To be like Christ, we must back our stated belief with actions that confirm that belief, following His Word. It is a tough task and we may never get there fully, but we’ll never get there if we don’t at least do our best and not just say it.

The Gospel provides a great example of how our God is a God of Action.  In the Gospel we see Jesus performing His first documented earthly miracle, turning water into wine at Cana.  He was at first apparently reluctant to perform it, telling his earthly mother that it was not the right time for Him to perform miracles. Mary chose to ignore this and instead placed great faith in her son by instructing the servants, “Whatsoever he saith to you do it.”

She had great faith in Him in that He would perform a miraculous action. Mary truly had the faith Jesus talked about which could “move mountains.” When He referred to this, He was not talking about literally moving mountains, but obstacles which get in our way in life.  That is the faith we need to have in Him and God. We need to have faith that He will help us overcome those mountainous obstacles, we just have to let him into our hearts.

His actions created a wine so good, it caused the governor to remark they usually set out the best wine first, then when the partygoers get more drunk they bring out the worst wine. But the wine Jesus created was so good, he said in effect, “You have saved the best for last.”

The whole point behind the Gospel is that Jesus, and God, is a person of action not just diction. Jesus could have chosen not to do anything or tell the servants anything. But He chose to honor His mother’s request and perform a miracle that set off His earthly ministry. When faced with the opportunity to act, He always acted. This was the first of those times when He was faced with a decision point. You will note in all of his miracles He chose to act. When we’re faced with the opportunity to act, we must emulate Jesus’s example and act to the best of our abilities.

This shows that if we are to become like Christ, we are also to be men and women of action and not just diction.  There are too many in this world who to paraphrase President Trumps’ inaugural address “They talk the good talk and sit around on their hands and do nothing.” It is all too easy to say the right words at the right time; however, it is harder to perform the right actions at the right time.

Actions truly show our character more than words ever could.  How should we act to show the best of our character?  To the extent you are able, attempt to do good to all.  Always do the right thing when you are faced with a choice. Sometimes that choice is harder than others to be made, but it must be made all the same. It is possible if we have the Holy Ghost in our hearts to do the right thing. We are not Christ, but if we do our best emulate His earthly actions, we do well.  If you treat your enemies with respect and kindness, you oft make them your friends. Like many other things Jesus taught, it is easy to say and hard to do.

Like Jesus at the well, we must remember that our purpose is to help bring people to salvation. We are not called to any action that would push people always from salvation, but rather to lead them by example towards that salvation.  Let us think about that the next time we do our actions. We must consider if our actions might push people away from salvation or to it. If our actions might push people away from salvation, then we must reconsider our actions and find an action that will push people towards salvation. We are called to be like Christ as much as possible. So, with that in mind, we must strive to influence the people around us for good.  A good reason to think before you open your mouth. Think is what I am about to say going to lead this person to or from Christ. If it will lead them away, think of how you can phrase it so it will lead them to Christ. Any step you take today may have future consequence.  Your witness, your testimony, your actions can bring people to the point they accept the Holy Spirit or not.  Your interface may only be one small step; but do your best to make it a step towards God, not away. Therefore, let us think about our actions and the possible consequences they could have for people turning to or away from Him.

Error is error, wrong is not right.  But, a person’s final destination is up to God, not us.  Fortunate for each of us, it should be considered.  During the journey of life through the time space continuum, we need to do our best to keep ourselves and those around us moving towards God, not away from Him.  The direction is always clear, sometimes we just do not want to read the signs. That is why we need the Holy Ghost’s help to read those signs and keep on moving in the consistent direction towards heaven.

If we understand we are less than perfect, actually far less than imperfect, we have a good start.  We know we need God in our lives to give us direction.  We need His guidance to direct our ACTION.

The common theme through the Collect, Epistle and Gospel is that if we have hope and trust in God, we must dread naught, and carry on, empowered through our daily lives here on Earth until we are called to our heavenly home.   These are actions we must take not mere thoughts or words, actual actions!

Read the Bible, find out what He wants you to do, then Do It.  What can you do today to carry out His Will?  There are a multitude of things you can DO to carry out His Will, but the question is, “Will you?”

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Third Sunday after Epiphany

You can’t quit now

21 January 2024, Anno Domini

Psalm 12 • Deuteronomy 16:18-20 &17:8-11 • Ephesians 2

The Third Sunday after The Epiphany.

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

It is rather interesting the passages today focus on justice, peace, or the right way to live.  We read about how others seem to be in control in David’s psalm but in the end we are reassured God is on his throne and in control.

6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.  7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

The two selections from Deuteronomy deal with the process of taking care of matters of justice and law, especially in how to administer and keep an eye on the process of law.

18 Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with just judgment.  19 Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.  20 That which is altogether just shalt thou follow, that thou mayest live, and inherit the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Now let us focus on the promises and grace as shown in the second chapter of the letter to the Ephesians.

In the first ten verses, Paul gives a lesson of the state of all mankind.  This does include the great promise of salvation, 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)  6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.  That great promise and gift does have some obligations, as we see that it is a gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Why?

We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

So we get lowered down a peg, so that we do not claim we saved ourselves, it is the work of God, but we also get “marching orders”.  St. Paul lets us know there is a plan of works that we are to do….as believers, as followers, as ones made in the workmanship of God, created in Christ Jesus.  We do not work for our salvation, we work after our salvation, we work because he has set out a plan, in advance, for us to follow.

We are all endowed with some type of talent, it is a gift, because our Creator, God placed that in us.

Janet and I were watching a Max Lucado video the other night.  Lucado was explaining how one determines what they should do with their life, especially pertaining to being a Christian.  He essentially expressed the very real concept that NO you can’t become what ever you want to be.  There are some careers, jobs, vocational paths that are not open to an individual.  One must determine by their skills, talents, abilities what they need to be doing for the Lord.  This can be determined by both a practical application and a strong spiritual sense.  Pray, pray, pray for guidance in what direction you should travel. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

You can’t quit now.

Something I noticed in my study of the Word of God, no where in the Bible is there any mention of retirement.   Yikes.  You mean the good old American ideal of retirement isn’t in the Bible?  That is right.  Notice what happens to leaders throughout the Bible.  They work and are in the traces until they are called home to their God.  In some cases they don’t get to live out their entire lives before they get the call.  Some cases they are very old, such as Moses.  In some cases they get a quick “haircut” like Sts Peter and Paul.   But nowhere can you find the word retirement.     There are plenty of times Jesus went off to a quiet place to pray or to eat undisturbed with is disciples, but that idea is a retreat, an R & R, not a retirement.

Now before you despair the idea that you must stay in your job forever, the Bible gives us plenty of examples of career changes.

Shepherds becoming warriors, soldiers becoming evangelists, commercial fishermen becoming preachers, government officials becoming preacher/teachers.

These career changes are in some cases late in life, and yet the faithful went on and did the work cheerfully, for the most part.

Occasionally as we read you have a couple of fellows who try to run away (Jonah), feign disabilities (Moses), complain because God didn’t kill everyone (Jonah), or whine about being the only one following God, (several of the major and minor prophets)

But overall, as I read it, we are to be doing God’s work until he calls us home.  Some of the most gracious workers in the field are those who can not get out and about.

I know of one lady of God who spends her days copying and colleting old out of print Christian classics.  She offers these on line for a nominal fee, just to cover her operating costs.  She has been wheel chair bound for over 20 years due to a chronic long term muscle disease.   And yet when you read her internet postings, she is the most cheerful and uplifting person, she is doing what she can to further the Kingdom of Christ.

No matter what is happening in Washington or Jefferson City, we must do the right thing and keep working for the advancement of the Kingdom, in spite of what may be road blocks, we must, within the law under take the spreading of His word to the farthest reaches of this world, we need to be about our Creators work as we see it revealed in our talents.

Let us pray.

F

ATHER, we ask that you help us to find our talents and gifts, those that you have endued us with as young, middle or mature Christians.  We want to follow your will, we want to advance your Kingdom, we want to be workers in your fields now and until we are called home.  Give us that due sense of peace, the knowledge that we are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and most especially members of God’s household, build on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.  In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.  And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.      Amen.

O

 GOD of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.   Amen.

T

HE LORD bless us, and keep us. The LORD make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The LORD lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and evermore.  Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Third Sunday after Epiphany

In today’s Epistle to the Romans, Paul writes Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men (v.17). Consider the last part of that verse. What does it mean? Rev Matthew Henry once penned the following regarding the use of that expression in II Corinthians 8:21. He said, “… it is the duty of all Christians to provide for things honest, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men; that is, to act so prudently as to prevent… all unjust suspicions concerning us, and all occasions of scandalous imputations.”

Even the worldly and ungodly have from time to time utilized such wisdom to carry forth their various plans and devices. Hear now the words of Niccolo Machiavelli from his work The Prince:

A Prince should therefore be very careful that nothing ever escapes his lips which is not replete with the five qualities [of mercy, good faith, integrity, humanity, and religion] so that to see and hear him, one would think him the embodiment [of the same]. And there is no virtue which it is more necessary for him to seem to possess than the last; because men in general judge rather by the eye than by the hand, for every one can see but few can touch. Every one sees what you seem, but few know what you are, and these few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many who have the majesty of the State to back them up.

Needless to say, it is hypocrisy to mimic being a child of God when you are not, but then the wicked aren’t concerned about the matters of faith and practice except to use them to further whatever agenda they have in mind. Nevertheless, God has read their hearts and knows well their intentions and purposes. And God knows us as well. That is why he gave us the messages found within holy scripture. Remember, All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. (II Timothy 3:16-17) Our good and gracious heavenly Father wants us to keep the Devil at bay and to do that we need to avoid the things which will open ourselves up to his influence.

Rev EM Bounds once noted, “If the spirit of forgiveness is always maintained and constantly exercised, it is a supreme defense against the attacks of Satan. An unforgiving spirit is not only Satan’s widest door into our hearts, but also his strongest invitation and warmest welcome.” When we are providing things honest in the sight of God and men, we are showing forth the truth of God’s word written. We are honoring our Lord and we are revealing the honest nature within us. We are not mere actors playing a role as Christians. We are Christians! The true and faithful Christian will not act against his nature because he is about pleasing God and not simply himself.

Rev Bounds also observed that, “The mighty new-birth experience makes a man watchful like a sentinel at his post. When the Enemy in power is massed… the believer is like a watchman. He stands on the walls of the beleaguered city like a guard over a royal prisoner. This keeping and guarding himself is safety against Satan’s inflaming touch. The faithful and vigilant Christian keeps himself pure, and Satan comes and finds nothing in him (see John 14:30). Every vantage point is barred and sleeplessly watched. ‘Keeping ourselves’ is the surest pledge that Satan will not keep us.”

Oh, how true. The regenerate soul has the power to say No to sin and make it stick for as the Apostle Paul wrote in I Corinthians 10:13, There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

When you are providing what is honest in the sight of men and of God, it is good to know that we can successfully resist temptation because it is a tool of the evil one who will seek to overthrow our faith and make us all castaways. God did not seal us as believers to have us removed from his hand. Consider also an earlier passage from I Corinthians: What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s (6:19-20).

I pray each of you will daily live in God’s perfect will; that you will cleave to his word written and stand firm in the doctrines found therein. We can know what God’s perfect will for us is if we are willing to be obedient to his word and commandment as found within the pages of scripture.

The unregenerate say that they cannot understand the word of God and so they listen to false teachers and ministers who tell them what they want to hear. This is not a new tale at all, for as the apostle Peter wrote in his second epistle, But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction (2:1).

They do not understand because as our Lord once warned, Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word (John 8:43). They are, as the apostle Paul described them, “Natural men” who, receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto [them], because they are spiritually discerned (I Corinthians 2:14). That is why an unregenerate person cannot serve God because he or she cannot truly understand what God’s expectations are for his people as they are not of his fold.

As Christians we are to reach out to our unregenerated fellow citizens as God gives us leave to do so that they will have a witness which might, and I emphasize might, have a spiritual therapeutic effect upon them. And who knows, maybe some of them might turn and be saved. But we have to put forth a honest and godly message and only by the power of the Holy Ghost will that be possible if we are truly in Christ and not just acting as if we are in Christ.

Let us pray,

O

 LORD our God, give us the words to say to turn the hearts of the unregenerate to you; and bless our efforts in these last days as we serve in your harvest; and these things we ask in the name of him who is our only Saviour and the King of kings and Lord of lords, even Jesus Christ. Amen.

Have a blessed week,

Bryan+

Third Sunday after Epiphany

The Wedding at Cana

21 January 2024, Anno Domini

The Third Sunday after The Epiphany.

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(John 2:1-11)

Until recently, only Jesus could turn water into wine.  Have you heard a new device from an American sommelier’s workshop will soon change this situation. “Jesus did it and now you can do it too,” joked the sommelier and owner of the Winery in Napa Valley, who, together with entrepreneur and winemaker Phillip James, developed an interesting device called the Miracle Machine.  Thanks to secret technology and a few ingredients, including grape concentrate and kvass, the pitcher-shaped machine can turn ordinary water into wine, without barrels or long waits. Just choose the type of wine from the menu, add water and press the button. The device can be connected to a smartphone, which through a special application will provide the necessary information about the fermentation process and at the same time notify you when the wine is ready for consumption. Depending on the type of wine, the entire production process takes no longer than three days. It truly turns water into the “drink of the gods” – just add a few ingredients and you have wine for a fraction of the usual time and cost.” It seems interesting, but unlike them, Jesus didn’t use any ingredients, especially didn’t wait for three days… He works a miracle in an instant. That’s why it’s a miracle.

The Gospel of John begins with a prologue – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us… (Jn. 1:1.14)  John continued the description of what happened next by describing a very rare event the Wedding in Galilee. According to Rabbinic Judaism, the wedding days were Wednesday and Thursday. The wedding consisted of the groom’s friends bringing the bride in a procession to the groom’s house. The wedding usually lasted 7 days. This wedding took place in Cana. The word Kana means “to create” “to obtain”. “the won people”, “God’s created people”. Cana was a village about 6 miles from Nazareth and therefore was probably someone Jesus and his family knew.  Wedding feasts of the first century were not like weddings today. Bride and groom did not go away on a honeymoon; they invited everyone in, to rejoice with him for the whole week.

John alone sensitively perceives the connection between the love of a man and a woman and God. John begins his Gospel immediately after the prologue by describing the wedding relationship of love between the bridegroom and the bride. He perceives that if he wants to say something about God’s love, he cannot do so immediately. He must start talking about love, which is intrinsically much closer to man. In his letter he writes: We love him, because he first loved us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. (1 Jn 4:19-21) John is not alone in noticing this connection between the love of a man and a woman in relation to God. The prophet Isaiah already wrote 300 years before him: For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.  And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. Tou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God. Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married. For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee. I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence, And give him no rest, till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth. The LORD hath sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured… (Is. 62:1-8)

The Biblical report tells us in one moment an unfavorable situation occurred.  “They have no wine!” In a seven-day wedding feast, that is not insignificant. Wine was a key beverage in the eastern culture. A symbol of love, joy, happiness and as symbols of the blessings of God… Unfortunately, in our regions, wine is often associated with the loss of human dignity as a result of drunkenness, but this is not a common practice in the southern regions, and it was not the case in the Galilee region either. Most of us are clueless as to the importance of wine in Jewish thought. When God spoke of punishing the nation, he would talk in terms of taking away their wine.  Without wine there was wrath from God, with wine, God’s favor. When God spoke of renewing their kingdom, he would speak in terms of restoring wine.  (Deut. 7:13-14; Psalm 104:14-15; Isaiah 55:1; Isaiah 25:6; Lamentations 2:12; Jeremiah 48:33; Amos 9:13-14…)

Jesus could take a bad situation and make it right! That is why Jesus turns water into wine, and not only a few bottles, but about 400-700 liters! Its not be similar to a parlor trick one might see on a David Copperfield special or some machine from the introduction to this text. Did you know changing water into wine involved an entire change in the molecular makeup of the water? A theologian wrote: “It’s not like Jesus added some food coloring or a teaspoon of salt. No, he changed the atomic structure of the liquid — a feat that required a staggering amount of energy and indicated ‘a mastery of natural law far beyond our current comprehension’.  However, Jesus really did change the water into wine, thus revealing his glory. At a molecular level, the water, basically hydrogen and oxygen, was changed into wine that contains sugars, yeast, and water, which contain carbon and nitrogen along with oxygen and hydrogen. Thus, by changing water into wine Jesus demonstrated his authority over even the atomic structure of atoms by commanding oxygen and hydrogen atoms to disassemble and reform into other atoms of different configurations.” Very powerful stuff. God is a God of the impossible. Is there anything major that God can not to do? What an awesome God!

How many of you have already said to yourself in your life: “It’s not what it was at the beginning of our marriage… We don’t have already the intoxicating wine of mutual love!” Don’t be afraid when it comes! This is not a tragedy! It’s not an experience that is anything special. Tragedy begins if Christ is not around! Then, instead of the wine of mutual love, the temptation arises to pick up the real bottle of wine and bury your hope of finding love in it. Or there is a temptation to find “another” – “second pots” from which the wine of initial falling in love will once again flow for a while, but now it will be wine mixed with drops of the bitterness of breaking up the initial relationship and family. So, if there is no tragedy when we find that we lack wine, I must add once again in one breath that tragedy occurs when we lack Christ nearby.

I know a few marriages – not many, but still – who have confided in me: “I like my wife much more now, after 25 or 30 years of marriage, than at the beginning of our relationship.” Do you know why that is? Because they have a place in their apartment where they can meet together for joint prayer every evening. Maybe by child’s bed, maybe in your bedroom. They read a Psalm together, ask Jesus for help and pray for themselves and each other, so that they can be a means of mutual sanctification. To reveal to each other a Love that they themselves are not the author of. They already know the truth about themselves, and they know very well that their wine of original love has run out. However, they also know the truth about Christ and he really transforms their water of effort into the wine of love more delicious than it was at the beginning.

Even, if you are not married, do you find yourself in a rough spot? Are you in chaos same like that day when was problem: “they have no wine”? Maybe you are now in a chaotic period of life when you have found that there is “no solution” or “no cure” or maybe “no one to help me”. Are things looking bleaker than you expected? Why don’t you go one step further? Why do you only see empty ‘pots’ of your problems? Why don’t you look for Jesus who is just a step away from you? Do you believe that Jesus can solve your problems, in His time, so that you can enjoy the blessings (wine)? What if He changed the whole molecular structure of a problematic situation for the better? Like water into wine. Jesus, who turns water into wine, is faithful and true. When they saw all this and were convinced of the power of Christ – his disciples believed on him  (Jn 2:11)

Do you believe in His power in your life? Choose God. Choose God’s way. Choose to follow God wholeheartedly. God will work miracles in your life.

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

In this case, He heard your pleas for Harper and her family and has done more than we could ask or imagine. She made it beautifully through the surgical procedure on the intestinal blockage and is doing so well that she was discharged last evening. She is recovering at home and doing very well. We are all very thankful to you our prayer warriors for your prayers and your encouraging words. In addition, the medical team has issued some new protocols for home care in the hope that these will keep Harper from having further issues. Columbiq

I am writing to request your prayers for Colombia, my country. At this moment frightful things are happening, a great diabolical shadow is cast over this nation.

  1. The Constitutional Court in a tyrannical way has decriminalized the crime of abortion in Colombia, even up to six months. This is an illegitimate process, the court is legislating, something that is not within the competence of the judges, on the other hand the issue of abortion was a cause judged in 2006, which is why it should not be judged again in 2022. But socialist groups, international elites, social engineers and feminist groups have not given up on the issue. They want to traffic in death.

  1. The candidate of the extreme left Gustavo Petro is close to become the president of Colombia, this is a man who in his youth was a guerrilla criminal, a vile and despicable man who has always served the interests of drug trafficking, he was an advisor to Chavez who implanted Communism in Venezuela, his second home is Communist Cuba.

  1. The same court approved the movement of Gustavo Petro called: la Colombia Humana, it gave him the status of a political party, with this, he has the possibility of getting to introduce at least 15 congressmen, basically he is close to kidnapping all the powers, he already has the judicial power in his pocket, he only lacks the executive and the legislative. We are close to the precipice, we trust in a miracle of God.

We hope you support us with your prayers, I will ask the brothers to pray unceasingly so that in his mercy we will be saved from these perverse men. God bless you and keep you in all things.

Your servant in Christ,

Bishop José Antonio Rios

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

[1] Remember, Screwtape is one of the Devil’s minions, a supervisor at that, so when he advises his student what to do, it is the polar opposite of what God wants. In his case, God is The Enemy! The patient? That is YOU!

[2] Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells.  While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.  The most common cause of death related to multiple myeloma is infection, with pneumonia being the most common fatal infection. Other common causes of death are bleeding (from low platelet counts), complications of bone fractures, kidney failure, and blood clots in the lungs.
