Today was the THird Sunday in Lent

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard.  It is quite interesting the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States.  Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church.  Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of the nation.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by the minister or in the case of Morning or Evening Prayer without a minister by the senior member present.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

And due to the rubric, the Collect for the Day is followed by the Collect for Ash Wednesday, which is found on Page 124:

Ash Wednesday.

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ This Collect is to be said every day in Lent, after the Collect appointed for the day, until Palm Sunday.

The Epistle for today comes from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, the Fifth Chapter, beginning at the First Verse. He echoes the advice of St. James in his general epistle to be Christians, not just claim to be followers of Christ, when James wrote, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

B

E ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

This morning’s Gospel comes from the Gospel of St. Luke, the Eleventh Chapter, beginning at the Fourteenth Verse.

J

ESUS was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: but when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

The Gospel

Luke 11:14-27

A

ND he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. 15 But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. 16 And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. 17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. 18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. 19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. 20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. 21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: 22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. 23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. 24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. 25 And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. 26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.  27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. 28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed arethey that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Christ presents to our hearts, minds, and eyes a very stark lesson on the power of sin, darkness and death.

A

ND he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.

A person is possessed of a devil, or evil spirit. This person has all his faculties of speech and communication, but the presence of an invited and evil guest into his heart has deprived him of the ability to use his God-given powers to speak and to communicate. It happened 2,000 years ago, and it has been happening in all intervening times to include the modern day.

Note the wonder of the people at the restoration to health of the formerly possessed person. The world is always surprised and misinterprets the works of God.

When we hide the Word of God in our hearts, we are strengthened against the ArchEnemy of our Souls – the Devil!

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. (Ps 119:11)

However, when we have a divided heart to admit even a small and cherished sin to remain in our hearts, it will grow and take possession of the whole organ.

Allowed sin always masters a man in time. The man may loathe his master, yet he obeys him; he may fear his master, yet still he does his hateful bidding.

Light always overcomes darkness because light is a positive value. Darkness has no real force. It is the absence of virtue – of righteousness. Even a tiny candle will dispel a roomful of darkness.  But we must light the candle!

God has given us His Word to light our way and illumine our dark hearts.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Ps 119:105 )

15 But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. 16 And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.

The modern church seeks signs and wonders! They must have always some present wonder and presumed miraculous sign to legitimize their faith, but what saith Christ?

1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. 2  He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. 3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? 4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

We have been provided enough evidence for our faith and more in the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ – a well-documented historical event of history.

The doubters accused Christ of using the power of Beelzebub to cast out devils.

What does this term, BEELZEBUB, mean? Lord of the flies – another word for DEVIL.

When a dead body, or even excrement, is exposed to the light of day, flies cover it and lay their eggs thereon. Later, maggots appear on the dead.

These unbelieving and wicked observers accuse Christ of bringing a lower form of life from filth. But Christ never resurrected maggots, but totally restored and healthy human beings. His power was the Creative Power that created man in the first occasion in Eden.

Beelzebub

The Lord of the Flies is a book by British novelist William Golding and, for some reason, is required reading in most American schools.

William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is a sordid tale about a group of kids who are stranded on a deserted island after their plane crashes.

The story is set during the Atomic War and plenty of references are made to the fact.

However, the real key to the story lies in the role of Beelzebub, Lord of the Flies.

Beelzebub has a central role in the story as he represents the Beast, or evil, that dwells within all humans.

The Beast cannot be hunted and since it dwells within all humans, humans are all guilty because mankind is sick.

The destruction of mankind is a point that Golding makes apparent often in this novel. He establishes early on that Beelzebub is a force within all humans that drives them to destroy and maim. (a perfect description of Satan as well as the sinful nature in all men and women born upon this earth)

Simon – loner who knows that the evil in every man’s heart can only be fought by reason and virtue. Murdered sadistically by all the others.

This book is an unhealthy book for one primary reason:

It ignores the God Equation and offers a human, rather than a spiritual, remedy.

17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. 18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.

Christ knows our hearts. He sees our nakedness always. Nothing is hidden from Him – even our thoughts and motives are revealed as a book written.

Christ says: “…..a house divided against a house falleth”

If you ask the average historian who said this, they would tell you, Abraham Lincoln. But Lincoln was simply paraphrasing the Bible.

It is ridiculous to allege that good can result from the spirit of evil.

19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.

I was once involved with a local Korean minister who desperately wanted to acquire a new building for the church, but he did not want to inform the people of the plan. He knew, since they were paying for the building, they might object to the cost. I advised him to inform the people and conduct prayer services to determine the Will of the Lord in the matter and to enlist the support of the people.

He became upset with me and later told a mutual friend: “That brother Jerry is good man, but He too much Bible!”

No one has ever, before, or after, paid me such an unintended compliment.

When you launch out courageously into the deep waters of God’s Word, there will always be the nay-sayers who gather to condemn you and impute false motive to your seeking. But, just as Father Noah did, keep building the Ark of Hope and Faith.

Compare with Luke 9:49-50:

  1. And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. 50And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

If a Roman priest stands and condemns homosexual marriage and abortion of innocents, will we today stone him for being Roman Catholic?

This might be Christ response to the book, Lord of the Flies –

24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. 25 And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

We are unable to clean and garnish our own hearts. This is the work of God, through His Word, and the working of the Holy Spirit.

If we renounce our sin of lust and greed, and remove them from our repertoire of sins, soon a greater and more wicked bag of sins will inhabit the place left vacant.

God’s Word, being Light, is necessary to dispel the darkness from our hearts. We are unable of our own strength and merit.

The book which I mentioned, obviates this principle and would leave men more destitute of virtue than before the attempted amendment.

If we have not yet surrendered our souls, unconditionally, to Christ, we are set for a fall to a lower point than before our feeble resolution to better ourselves.

Human reason is not the answer. We need God in our lives. We need His Word in our hearts. We need the old heart regime to be filled with goodness – not simply devoid of evil.

A vacuum always draws on the environment. It always seeks to be filled. If we presumably empty our hearts of evil, we cannot keep them empty. Something will force its way in and occupy by force our Soul’s bastion. But if Christ resides there, there will be no room for the devil.

27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. 28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed arethey that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Christ is not interested in elevating our human image – He seeks to alter it completely – to restore it to His own intents and purposes evidenced in the Garden at Eden.

Hearing and knowing God’s Word is not enough for as James has said:  19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? James

Saving Faith will always be reflected in our daily lives – the things we say and do, the manner in which we love and respond to those in great distress.

Remember the Love of Christ was not simply a fondness, but a sacrificial, compassionate love that always expressed itself in action. When He saw, He had compassion.

Bp Jack brings the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together because as is always the case there is a unifying message in the Scripture for this Sunday.   Bp Jack’s sermon can be viewed on video HERE -> https://youtu.be/-TVbL9-aRj0

Good morning! I hope you are all doing well. In today’s sermon we will be looking at the unifying message of the Collect, Epistle and Gospel and examine how they share a common message of action as we are about half way through Lent, a season of preparation.  Let us start by reading today’s Collect:

The Third Sunday in Lent.

The Collect.

W

E beseech thee, Almighty God, look upon the hearty desires of thy humble servants, and stretch forth the right hand of thy Majesty, to be our defence against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Consider these words from the Collect:

… look upon the hearty desires of thy humble servants, and stretch forth the right hand of thy Majesty, to be our defence against all our enemies …

In the Collect, we ask God look in to our hearts, and see our desire to be His children and defend us against evil.  That also means we are looking for His Help which comes in the form of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost will assist us in the process of changing of our hearts to actually have “hearty desires” to do His Will and to be “humble servants”, not our usual and customary self-centered selves.  Quite a combination of thoughts in a small bit of verbiage!  It is amazing how much we can put in a short sentence if we use words to their best advantage! If we will be follow Him, He will defend us in all assaults of our enemies. [1]  If we will not accept His Help, He will not force it on us.  Back to that old, “Thy will be done.”  The question arises once again, from whose mouth does it proceed, ours or God’s?

Today’s Epistle and Gospel share the same theme. This theme is centered around action. In order to be a Christian, you have to act as a Christian and not just say we are. And we cannot try and please both man and God, we have to pick which master we are to serve God, or Satan/man/mammon. I know who I want to serve, do you? Faith without the actions to back it up is a false and meaningless faith. Sadly there are too many people in this world today who call themselves Christians who do not truly act like Christians. We must strive to not be like those people, but strive to be Christian not just in name only but in deed as well.

In light of this, there are two phrases particularly worth remembering, “a house divided against a house falleth” and “He that is not with me is against me.”  Middle ground exists, but it is quicksand.  Eventually one has to choose a side.  Everybody has to make that choice sooner or later. It is very clear to us what side we should choose. The only rational side to take is that of God, the side that will lead us to eternal life not that of eternal death.

And, we cannot keep with the opposition.  It is the natural part of the history of the Bible and of life. We have to choose to follow God, as there is no other reasonable option, which will give us the result following God will result in. We must decide who we will follow. We do not have true faith if we do not act upon the words that our lips speak, of believing in Christ and His Father. We must emulate the example that Christ Himself set for us in His ministry of action.

Speaking of His ministry, Jesus set the ultimate example for us to follow for action.  Saying we are Christians and actually being Christians are two different states of being. It is like the difference between saying we are going to the grocery store and actually getting in the car and driving to the grocery store. It is quite easy to say we are Christians, it is quite another to act like we are. Acting like Christians is a lot harder than just saying we are but it is something we must strive to do if we are to be more like Christ. This will be something that we work on for the rest of our earthly lives.

In his Epistle, Paul tells us in order to live out our faith, we need to make our actions match our stated desires, very much in line with the thought above. Paul calls us to avoid those actions that are unbecoming of Christians and we need to walk in the light and not the dark. Given our fallen nature it can be a difficult task sometimes, but with the help of the Holy Ghost, it will be easier. We need the Holy Ghost to enter into our hearts and listen to His advice to stay on the trail of the light and not fall into the pit of darkness.   He talks about uncouth behavior of those who are of this world and not of God. He says that those folks have no inheritance in the kingdom of God, so let us strive not to be like them. He is warning us not to let our natural desires overcome us, but let the Holy Ghost in so we can desire what is good for us, versus what is not good for us as our natural tendency is. This can be a hard thing, but it is something that we must do all the same. We need the Holy Ghost’s help to fight our natural tendency of wanting bad things. We should be doing our best to emulate Christ’s example as much as we are able.

As we have discussed many times, action is the central theme of the Christian faith, which was first shown with Christ’s death on the cross and resurrection. He came to act for us, not just to talk or meditate; His great plan involved action, though it was painful, it was His action which released us from the wages of sin. We have to follow His Example that He set for us and live our lives in a manner that reflects we believe the Gospel.

Think about the Gospel.

It is very important to be unified in our worship and maintain mutual support; a team always beats individuals.  That is not to take away from individuality, but rather to note we need to remember whose side we are on and work together with our teammate. If we are not working together, then we are not truly united under Christ’s banner. And if we are not truly united, then we will not get anywhere in spreading the Gospel for all to hear, learn and understand.

We might have individual personality differences, but as long as we all believe on Christ and His Death and Resurrection and Gospel, then those differences we might have with others are minor and not worth arguing or fighting over. We must cast aside our personal feelings about the minor differences and focus on how we can work together with our fellow Christians to further His Mission here on Earth.

Christ himself came not to unite the world, but to divide it, father against son.  In Matthew 10:32-34 He says “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.” He is saying here He has not come to unite the World, for the World is not on our side. But to clearly divide the world to show who is with God and who is against God.  He came to highlight who is for Him and who is against Him.

For as earlier explained, one man cannot serve two masters. And also the saying of where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. In this life by reading through Scripture we can easily tell who is for Him and who is against Him. It is simple, who holds to the principles of Scripture is for Him. They who do not hold to them are not with Him.

You must keep constant vigilance against backsliding, for a fallen Christian is in worse shape than one who was never exposed to The Word. In order to maintain the constant vigilance you have to always act upon your faith. The Epistle and Gospel both talk about the curious dichotomy; you are saved by faith, Jesus’s faith, and your faith alone saves you, not what you do; yet if you have faith, you must act on that faith. To maintain your Christian course, you must truly turn a new leaf, and not slip back into the old man. This is one of the most difficult challenges as a Christian, but with the help of the Holy Ghost, we each can do it.

You must receive the Word, hear it, and act upon it and spread it joyously to others, in order for your faith to have any meaning at all. Otherwise we will have been for the worse than if we never had heard the Good News. It is not a gift to selfishly lock up, but to share and give to others. That is the true joy of the Good News. It is most certainly more blessed to give than to receive in this case.

You must grasp your acceptance of Jesus Christ as your savior and your repentance is the beginning of your life as a New Man in Jesus.

Will you slip?  Without doubt.  But, when you do, will you again repent and continue to do your best to follow the Word of God, the Light and the Truth?  All that matters is you get up and do your best not to do what you did to slip. Life is a continuous learning process. Indeed, if you are a Christian that is what you must do.  We will always slip up in our lives, that is in our fallen nature. But we have to get up and get back on track, using the Holy Gospel to guide us like the instruments in an aircraft.  We cannot trust our feeling, but only our instruments (God’s gift of Holy Scripture).  You are called to believe and act on those beliefs to the best of your ability.  If you do not, then prepared as you were for life, you will so be prepared for the pit.  As you read Luke, remember the second half of the Book of Luke is The ACTS of the Apostles, not thoughts, wishes, prayers or meditations.

For, “blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

How many times when we were growing up, did we have to be reminded of something?

How many times were we told to finish it, fold it, mow it, or get something done?

In today’s passage we read where Moses is going over the reasons for obeying God’s commandments.  Moses gives the people several ways to remember the commandments.

N

OW these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: 2 That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

  1. The commands, decrees, and laws are to be kept by you and taught to your children and your children’s children.  You are to fear the Lord.   The fear of God means that you are reverential. We are to revere God.  He is to be held in highest esteem by us.

  1. We are to love God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our strength.  The commandments that were given that day were to be upon your hearts.

4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: 5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

  1. Talk about them. Teach them to your children….’impress them on your children’.  Talk about them when you sit at home, talk about them when you walk along the road, when you lie down (at night) and when you get up (the next morning) 6And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

  1. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

  1. .. remember… don’t forget…all these commandments and decrees and laws were to be central to the day to day life of the Hebrew people, to keep them in the light of the Lord.  To help them not stray from His way.

20 And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you? 21 Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh’s bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand: 22 And the LORD shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes: 23 And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.

Now in remembering and teaching these laws, commandments, and decrees, the people were being asked to do the impossible.  They could do most of these things, but there would be times that they would fail.  That is where the tabernacle and later temple sacrifice would come in to being.  Something would be slain to shed it’s blood to offer protection to the one who offered the sacrifice.  The concept of the blood sacrifice was not salvation, it was to point to the ultimate sacrifice, that is of Christ Jesus and his shed blood that would wash away our sins.

One cannot keep all the Ten Commandments.  If you have broken one of them, you have broken all of them.

The Ten Commandments are there to show us that we utterly fail at trying to keep them.  They are there to remind us that only One can keep the Ten Commandments, Jesus, because he is Sinless.   He being sin for us, by taking on the sin of the world at the cross, He will save man from his sins.

Our duty as parents, grandparents, friends of young or growing Christians is to help in the growth of the spiritual young.   We are to always give a reason fearing God. Show by teaching, by example, by helping to remember, that God wants us to love him, to obey him, to always be in reverence of Him….because He has commanded us to.

We are to be ever mindful of the command of God.   V.24 – 25

24 And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. 25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.

When we get to the New Testament we will see several references to Jesus becoming our righteousness.  By His stripes (whippings) we are healed.  The illness of sin will be healed by his once and for all sacrifice on the cross.   We will be free of all that keeps us from God, we must first accept that gift that God the Father sent us.  Jesus Christ the Redeemer of Mankind.

As we continue this season of reflection let us remember that in each passage of scripture where there are warnings and dire consequences for not obeying God and following His way.

There is an equal and excellent way out of trouble.   He always provides us a way out.  The ultimate way out of the mess we make of our lives of course is the example of Jesus.

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Let us pray:

L

ORD help us to remember.  Help us to teach others to remember.  Let us not forget what you did for us on the cruel cross so many years ago. That when the time came, you conquered Death, you took the sting of Death away, you rose from the grave and by doing that you gave us hope.  Hope in the life to come and in the life everlasting. Amen.

T

HE LORD bless us, and keep us. The LORD make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The LORD lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and evermore.  Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore.    Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Third Sunday in Lent

In John’s Gospel our Lord makes an important distinction concerning the regenerate and the unregenerate when he says, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. Which of you convinceth me of sin. And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. (John 8:42-47)  He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life. (John 5:24)

Given those verses of scripture, we are presented with on one hand, the unregenerated masses— read “majority”— who belong to our adversary, and a believing remnant— read “minority”— who belong to God. The unregenerate are the children of disobedience as noted in Ephesians 5:6) The unregenerate do not understand the words of Christ because they cannot hear them. As the apostle Paul explained, But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is image of God, should shine unto them. (II Corinthians 4:3-4) The remnant, on the other hand, hear the words of Christ and accept them as truth, and they will seek to honor God through their obedience to his word and commandment. As John noted in his first general epistle, … he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in [Christ] and [Christ] in him… hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us (3:24) Ergo, all who have been born again of the Holy Ghost will live in obedience to God’s will which excludes those behaviors that are identified in Scripture as the works of the flesh.

And what are the works of the flesh? The apostle Paul warned us to, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh (Galatians 5:16) Further on in the same chapter he described them in detail when he wrote: Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft [sorcery], hatred, variance [contentiousness], emulations [jealousy], wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like, of the which I tell you before, as I have told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21)

For some, the above passages are difficult to hear much less adhere to in their daily lives. The new bible versions soften some of the words used in the Authorized Version such as substituting a phrase “sexual immorality” for the word, fornication. As one Bible researcher has noted concerning the swap, “In the battle between man’s mores and God’s laws, the new versions have opted for the ‘popular’ morals of the day. They have substituted the relativistic word ‘immorality’ for the word ‘fornication’. The word ‘immorality‘ carries with it no description of what is forbidden. Webster elaborates:’ Immorality: State or quality of being immoral. Immoral: Not moral; [and]. Fornication: Illicit sexual intercourse on the part of an unmarried person.’” I ask you: Which word supplies the clearer warning? Now God did not give us his word as a draft for our approval, so either one accepts God’s word written, or one will, by default, be in rejection of it. There are no exceptions.

Paul wrote extensively on the Christian ethos. He knew what it meant to join “the dark side” as he had once been an ignorant tool of the devil prior to his conversion (Acts 9:1-20). But after he accepted Christ as his Saviour and Lord, the apostle proved to be a passionate and successful minister of the gospel. Consider the scope and detail of the apostle’s works. His epistles contain the rubrics for church order and worship. He was called to supply form to the substance— to flesh out the specifics of what it means to have a church. He was called to preach and be heard of the remnant that they might be saved by the effectual working of the Holy Ghost.

But in our contemporary world, there are presently a host of wayward churches and pastors who have, in essence, traded away the true gospel for another gospel. And they have thus opened themselves up to the apostle’s curse (Galatians 1:6-9) For in their acceptance of a false gospel they have rejected the concept of biblical inerrancy and are encouraging infidelity to our Lord who has commanded otherwise. They have become cultists who gather around a figment of Christ, but not the only begotten Son of the Father. Such beliefs are in fact the spirit of antichrist which has been sown by Satan throughout the world since our Lord’s first advent (I John 2:18-23 and 4:1-6) And so it is on account of this evil spiritual presence that our Lord has been forced to stand outside their church doors knocking to enter not only their assemblies but their hearts. (Revelation 3:20)

Bishop Ryle once wrote concerning these last days, “…that the world will never be completely converted to Christianity by any existing agency, before the end comes. In spite of all that can be done by ministers, churches, schools and missions, the wheat and the tares will grow together until the harvest; and when the end comes, it will find the earth in much the same state that it was when the flood came in the days of Noah (St. Matthew 13:24-30; 24:37-39)… [and] that the widespread unbelief, indifference, formalism and wickedness, which are to be seen throughout Christendom, are only what we are taught to expect in God’s Word. Troublous times, departures from the faith, evil men waxing worse and worse, love waxing cold, are things distinctly predicted.”

Our Lord said of Noah’s time that, … as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be (Matthew 24:37-39) Now look at the spiritual condition of humanity as described in Genesis 6: And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually (v.5). Paul noted in his second epistle to Timothy that, …in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves… unthankful, unholy… lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof... (vv.2-5)

The apostle also forewarned the church would experience apostasy prior to the return of our Lord. Consider his words in II Thessalonians 2: We beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, that ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be reveal, the son of perdition (vv.1-3). It will be that man of sin who will use a great deception to cloud the minds of the unregenerated so that they will not turn unto Christ and be saved (II Thessalonians 2:7-12).

The LORD informed the prophet Isaiah that his message to the people would not be received and believed (6:9-13). It was a message meant for those who would hear even though they were few. God is interested in proclaiming the truth to all, but he knows that only a small segment of those who will hear will believe and turn unto him. They are the remnant. To quote Bishop Ryle once more: “I believe the grand purpose of the present dispensation is to gather out of the world an elect people, and not convert all mankind. It does not surprise me at all to hear that the heathen are not all converted when missionaries preach, and that believers are but a little flock in any congregation in my own land… The gospel is to be preached as a witness, and then the end shall come. This is the dispensation of election, not universal conversion.”

And so it has been the solemn duty of every faithful Christian to be salt and light in this sin-darkened world regardless of whether or not the masses accept our witness. Paul wrote, knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men (II Corinthians 5:11). In that vein, we should pray for God’s gift of faith to be spread abroad, and that God would bring a spirit of revival into the world in these last days. The power of praying Christians is infinite, for the Lord we serve is a mighty and sovereign God who cares for us and hears us. James tells us in his epistle that the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much (5:16).

Paul reminded young Timothy in his second epistle: And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will (2:25-26). Though many will perish, still we ought to pray for the unregenerate around us. Our duty is to give them the gospel of truth, to give it to them straight, and to keep giving it to them as God gives us the occasion so to do.

We close our worship of both Morning and Evening Prayer with A Prayer of St. Chrysostom which states in part, “Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them…” We may not always understand why God acts, or does not act in a particular matter for which we have petitioned him. Nevertheless, we can rest assured that in his love for us he will hear us. To that end, let us close with an excerpt from John 10:14, I am the good shepherd and know my sheep, and am known of mine. For the Remnant, those are most comfortable words indeed, so let us work to expand the Remnant as God gives us the leave to do in his service so that more will indeed hear and be obedient to God’s word and commandment.

Let us pray,

O

GOOD and gracious God, whose everlasting purpose has been to redeem thine elect saints from thy wrath to come, and to bring us into thy rest; assist us we pray, that by the power of the Holy Ghost, we would be made a people fit for our work here as well as for the world to come; and these things we ask in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Have a blessed week,

Bryan+

Bishop Dennis Campbell’s Sermon

Bishop Dennis is a brilliant speaker.  He is able to take biblical precepts and make them perfectly understandable, even to me.  When he provides the text of his sermons I take the utmost pleasure in passing them on.

The Kingdom of God Has Come Among Us

Luke 11:14-28

Third Sunday in Lent

Most people know this story.  A person is mute and blind due to demonic oppression.  Jesus casts out the demon, but the Pharisees accuse Him of doing it in the power of the prince of devils.  Christ refutes their accusation by comparing what He has done to an assault on the devil’s kingdom and castle in which He binds the devil and plunders his castle.

Questions to be Asked

The people naturally wonder how Jesus is able to do the things He does.  How is He able to feed multitudes with a little boy’s lunch?  How is He able to heal the sick?  How is He able to cast demons out of people?  Are the Pharisees right?  Are the exorcisms fake?  Are they accomplished through demonic power?  Or, are they from God?

Then, as now, some people faked healings and exorcisms.  People would go from town to town, staging healings and exorcisms of accomplices who were neither sick nor possessed by demons.   But, in this instance, the people seem to know the dumb and blind man.  They know his condition is real, and they know his condition is changed, cured by Jesus.  Let’s go one step further, the people know he is possessed by a devil.  This is no psychological trauma, no brain malfunction, no lack of mental ability.  It is real and actual demonic oppression.  So this is a real exorcism.  Even the Pharisees know it isn’t fake.  They accuse Jesus of many things, but never accuse Him of faking His miracles.

Satan is a powerful being, and he sometimes gives extraordinary abilities to people.  The Egyptian magicians were able to copy some of Moses’ signs in Egypt, and stout chains could not hold the Gadarene demoniac.  The accusation of Pharisees is that Jesus casts out devils by Satanic power.  Beelzebub, prince of devils, is Satan..

Verses 17-20 give Jesus’ rebuttal of this accusation.  He begins saying a house divided cannot stand, and infers that if He casts out demons by Satan’s power, Satans house is divided.  His exorcism would be a coup, or civil war within the kingdom of Satan, which will result in Satan’s kingdom collapsing on itself.  Satan would not allow that.  If, on the other hand, Jesus casts out devils by the finger of God, the Kingdom of God has come upon you.

Next, he gives the illustration of the strong man armed (Satan) and the stronger Man (Jesus) conquering him.  The point of the story is that Jesus is not casting demons out by Satanic power, He is invading Satan’s kingdom, entering his castle, freeing his captives and taking his “goods” as the spoils of war.

Here we come to the main point of this passage.  This is an important, a very important point: if Jesus’ exorcisms are real, and if they are not accomplished by some kind of deal with the devil, they must be accomplished by the finger or power or Spirit of God.  If they are accomplished by the power of God, the Kingdom of God is come among you in the Person of Jesus Christ.

A Decision to be Made

This means the people have a decision to make.  Christ once asked the Pharisees “what think ye of Christ?  Paul, confronted with a frightening vision on the Damascus road, cried out, “who art Thou Lord?”  Pilate wanted to know what to do with Jesus.  Those who see the results of this very real exorcism had to ask themselves these same questions about Jesus.  What should I think of Him?  Who is He?  What shall I do with Him?

These questions force the people to decide whom they will believe.  The Pharisees had much to commend them; position, they were leaders in Israel.  Education, they were doctors of the law, the Ph.D.s of their era.  Social standing, they were among the wealthy.  Reputation, they were regarded as the keepers of the identity and traditions of Israel, and they were regarded as righteous and Godly men.

Jesus was from Nazareth, an inconsequential town in an insignificant place.  He had no money, no seminary education, and no degrees to endorse Him.  But Jesus did have one thing, to commend Him, He has healed the man and cast out the demon.  The Pharisees have not.

Like the people who witnessed the exorcism, we, also have a decision to make.  We also need to decide who Jesus is and what to do with Him.  We also have to decide whether we will believe the Pharisees, or the Lord.

A Blessing to They that Hear

If Jesus truly frees people from the devil, by the power of God, what shall we do?  He gives us the answer in His response to the woman’s comment in verse 27: “blessed are they that hear the word of God.”

Hearing means more than receiving sound waves.  We can turn the volume of a music system up so loud it makes our ears hurt, yet not hear the words and message of the music.  We can sit in Church for years and hear the Bible read each Sunday, but still not receive its message.  We can read the Bible every day, and yet, not hear it.  This, obviously is not the Lord’s meaning here.  To hear the word of God is to receive its message, to internalize it.  It is to give it your attention, like you used to do when your parents addressed you in “that tone” that said they meant business.   Listen attentively.  Give your complete attention to the Word of God.  Receive its message.

Where do we hear the word of God?  Should we expect visions, like Daniel’s vision of the four beasts?  There was a time when God spoke to His people in signs and visions.  But Hebrews 1:2 says He has spoken to us, in these last days, “by His Son.”  Hebrews is saying God’s former ways of speaking to us have ended, for He has given His last word in Jesus Christ.  “This is My beloved Son,” said the Father to the disciples of Jesus on the mountain, “hear Him.”  God has spoken to us, in the final sense, the authoritative sense through Jesus Christ.  That is why John 1:1 calls Jesus the word who was with God and was God.  Jesus gave His word to the Apostles, and the Apostles recorded it in the Bible.  So, in a very real sense, the Bible is the word of God, as though it came from the very mouth of God.  Hear it, Listen attentively.

A Blessing to They that Keep

Hearing and understanding the Bible is not the end of the story.  We must let it shape our our beings, so that its thoughts become our thoughts, its values become our values, and its views of life and goodness and truth become ours.  Keeping the word of God means we let it abide in us, and let it transform us and conform us to Godliness; let it shape us that we may become like Jesus, and become the people He wants us to be.  To keep the word of God is to hold it as a way of life, out of love, giving up ourselves to His service, and becoming living sacrifices.

One way of keeping God’s word is by obeying His commandments.  We all know that, almost instinctively, for if we truly love someone, we do the things that please him/her.  God is pleased with righteousness, and righteousness is defined in His commandments.

A second way of keeping God’s word is called faith.  Faith is just believing God.  Sometimes we call it believing in Him, or believing in Jesus.  It is what the Bible means in First John 3:32 when it says, “This is His commandment, that we should believe on the Name of His Son, Jesus Christ.”  Believing in Jesus this way, basically means trusting Him to make your peace with God.  He died to forgive your sins and present you righteous to the Father.  He is like a shield between you and the punishment for your sins.  As a shield absorbs the arrows and blows of the enemy, keeping the soldier safely behind it, Jesus, on the cross absorbed the punishment for your sins, and kept you safely behind Him.  “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  Trust your Shield.  Trust your Saviour.  Keep His word.

Did Jesus cast out the demon by the finger of God?  Did the Kingdom of God truly come down to us in Christ?  If these things be so, surely the words of blessing to those who hear and keep the word of God are also true.

God bless you.  Amen.

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  Wed like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Columbiq

I am writing to request your prayers for Colombia, my country. At this moment frightful things are happening, a great diabolical shadow is cast over this nation.

  1. The Constitutional Court in a tyrannical way has decriminalized the crime of abortion in Colombia, even up to six months. This is an illegitimate process, the court is legislating, something that is not within the competence of the judges, on the other hand the issue of abortion was a cause judged in 2006, which is why it should not be judged again in 2022. But socialist groups, international elites, social engineers and feminist groups have not given up on the issue. They want to traffic in death.

  1. The candidate of the extreme left Gustavo Petro is close to become the president of Colombia, this is a man who in his youth was a guerrilla criminal, a vile and despicable man who has always served the interests of drug trafficking, he was an advisor to Chavez who implanted Communism in Venezuela, his second home is Communist Cuba.

  1. The same court approved the movement of Gustavo Petro called: la Colombia Humana, it gave him the status of a political party, with this, he has the possibility of getting to introduce at least 15 congressmen, basically he is close to kidnapping all the powers, he already has the judicial power in his pocket, he only lacks the executive and the legislative. We are close to the precipice, we trust in a miracle of God.

We hope you support us with your prayers, I will ask the brothers to pray unceasingly so that in his mercy we will be saved from these perverse men. God bless you and keep you in all things.

Your servant in Christ,

Bishop José Antonio Rios

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

[2] Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells.  While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.  The most common cause of death related to multiple myeloma is infection, with pneumonia being the most common fatal infection. Other common causes of death are bleeding (from low platelet counts), complications of bone fractures, kidney failure, and blood clots in the lungs.
