Fourth Sunday after Easter Sunday Report

Today is the Fourth Sunday after Easter; the Easter season is five Sundays, the last of which, the Fifth Sunday after Easter, is commonly called Rogation Sunday.  Like every day, today we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, Christ the Lord IS Risen today!

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

That was then, how about today?

I think myself that we have more machinery of government than necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious.

Thomas Jefferson

18th century American patriot and president

Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen…

Isaiah 43:10

The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: therefore the Son of man is Lord of the sabbath.

Mark 2:27-28

And when they bring you unto synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: for the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

Luke 12:11-12

The world will never elect to follow Christ in the Way, the Truth, and the Life. It will always prefer a perversion over purity… When civilizations or nations seek to follow men instead of God, there always follows tyranny and oppression.

Jerry L. Ogles

20th and 21st century Anglican Orthodox Presiding Bishop

The America of my time line is a laboratory example of what can happen to democracies, what has eventually happened to all perfect democracies throughout all histories. A perfect democracy, a ‘warm body’ democracy in which every adult may vote and all votes count equally, has no internal feedback for self-correction. It depends solely on the wisdom and self-restraint of citizens… which is opposed by the folly and lack of self-restraint of other citizens. What is supposed to happen in a democracy is that each sovereign citizen will always vote in the public interest for the safety and welfare of all. But what does happen is that he votes his own self-interest as he sees it… which for the majority translates as ‘Bread and Circuses.’ ‘Bread and Circuses’ is the cancer of democracy, the fatal disease for which there is no cure. Democracy often works beautifully at first. But once a state extends the franchise to every warm body, be he producer or parasite, that day marks the beginning of the end of the state. For when the plebs discover that they can vote themselves bread and circuses without limit and that the productive members of the body politic cannot stop them, they will do so, until the state bleeds to death, or in its weakened condition the state succumbs to an invader—the barbarians enter Rome.

Robert A. Heinlein

20th century American naval officer and science fiction author

Whenever we are planning for posterity, we ought to remember that virtue is not hereditary.

Thomas Paine

18th century American patriot

It is when a people forget God that tyrants forge their chains.

Patrick Henry

18th century American founding father and patriot

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

John 10:27-29

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

II Corinthians 5:7

When heaven and earth pass away, when all flesh and the glory of it wither as grass, the word of the Lord endures forever. Those whose happiness is bound up on Christ’s righteousness and salvation will have the comfort of it when time and days shall be no more.

Matthew Henry

17th and 18th century English pastor and author

History

History is what happened, not what someone says happened after changing the narrative to what they wish happened.  Those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it.  Why do you think so much math is taught in school and so little history?

Bp LTC Hap Arnold

Why History is Important

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.

                                                                                                            George Orwell

1984

How can you have no regrets about your life lived and be considered fit for heaven? Without a humble, contrite heart, without a coming to God’s throne of grace to seek his pardon in the name of Christ, there can be no assurance of salvation. Those who have no regrets have nothing to confess and without their true confession, without their recognition of their sins they are lost.

Rev Bryan Dabney

20th and 21st century Anglican Orthodox minister, educator and author

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 174-175, with the Collect first:

The Fourth Sunday after Easter.

The Collect.

O

ALMIGHTY God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

This week’s Epistle came from the First Chapter of the Epistle of Saint James beginning at the Seventeenth Verse. James tells us we are the pinnacle of God’s creation, destined to be the stewards of His world.  This position has its privileges, but even more important it has its responsibilities.  Most of the time, we seem to concentrate on what we like, the privileges, and forget about those responsibilities which require work, putting off instant gratification, persistence and sometimes courage.  As Saint Paul so often tells us, we must become new people, putting aside our old ways, considerate of what we should do and let ourselves become open to His Word:

E

VERY good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

This week’s Holy Gospel came from the Sixteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the Fifth Verse.

You must recognize we are imperfect creatures with free will.  For us to do God’s Will, not ours, we need help.  We need that bit of good leaven, which will let our hearts rise to the occasion.  We need the Holy Ghost in our hearts and souls.  Listen as John tells us:

J

ESUS said unto his disciples, Now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Amen.

The Collect

The upheavals attending the government of Great Britain under Oliver Cromwell’s Commonwealth resulted in a change of opening words of this Collect. The Prayer Book and Episcopacy of the Church of England were viewed with an unfriendly eye by the new regime. The wording of the Gelasian Sacramentary, and that of all previous Books of Common Prayer, had begun: O Almighty God, which dost make the minds of all faithful people to be of one will…. The near-dictatorial government under Oliver Cromwell, designated Lord Protector for Life, was unfriendly to the Church of England and thus the wording was changed in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer to its current use. This was a pretended recognition not all who call themselves Christians practice the faith and works of Christ. I personally prefer the wording recognized by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer cited in this paragraph and consistent with the Gelasian Sacramentary. It is in complete conformity with the Word of God that all Christians should be at one Mind with Christ.

We know that in the Providence of God, all things fall before the Mind and Will of god and will conform to that Mind and Will – even the sins of desperate sinners will be turned to the victory of the Lord and His Church. O ALMIGHTY God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men We all can recount experiences in our lives in which we have been harshly wronged, but later discover that the evil intended was turned to victory under the love and guidance of our Lord Jesus Christ. Even wicked men, such as Judas Iscariot – though they intend evil – are molded to serve the over-ruling will of God our Father.

John Newton was an evil sea captain who dealt in the disgraceful trade of slaves. He was a drunkard and a profane man whom, not only the slaves his mistreated, but his crew as well loathed and hated for his cruelty. Once on a voyage to England, the vessel he was aboard came under a withering storm and gales that threatened to destroy the ship. The main mast was broken, and the ships wooden hull threatens to collapse. It was in the midst of this peril and trouble that seemed sent from the very jaws of Hell that the best good was ever done John Newton. He went down into the depth of the ship and began, for the first time since he had sat at his mother’s knee, and prayed with all of his heart – not just for physical, but spiritual, salvation. The seas calmed, and Newton was spared for better things. As a result, John Newton became one of the most powerful men of God England has ever produced. The memorable hymn, Amazing Grace, was a product of that dark and stormy night on the sea. His Olney hymns still populate the traditional hymnals of all churches.

Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest Do you love the Commandments of God? Is it even possible to love God and hate His Commandments that reveal His nature and Character? Every Christian reading this devotion should be able to confess the words of David the King without equivocation: 111 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart. 112 I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.  113 I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love. 114 Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word. 115 Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God. (Psalm 119:111-115) Only the true people of God can make this confession. Do you hate any of the Commandments of God? Are there secret sins that you harbor in your heart? What about bearing false witness or adultery – even imagined sins? 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. (1 John 5:2-3)

“….and desire that which thou dost promise.” Do we masticate every word of the Lord’s Prayer which we repeat at every worship service, or do we simply roll the words past our heart from rote memory. “Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.” Do we pray for HIS will to be done, as did Christ, or do we pray continually for our OWN wills to be done? Do you ask more of God than your daily bread? “Give us this day, our daily Bread.” Has He ever refused you your absolute needs, especially daily Bread? He has promised us to be with Christ in the Eternity Future. Is this your utmost desire? Here is the greatest of all promises: 2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. (John 14:2-3) This is the end of all faith, is it not?

“….that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found We all follow after that which we love most. If we love God’s Commandments, we will follow them out of our Love of God and not out of constraint. Of course we fall short of perfect obedience, but with our hearts fixed on God and His Law, we shall surely improve our obedience with practice (sanctification).  The General Confession for Morning/Evening Prayer epitomizes our plight: “We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders.” These offenses best not become habitual. 19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me (Romans 7:19-20) The grace of God, through the working of the Holy Ghost, will amend our desires and characters continually in causing our characters to become ever more virtuous and our desires to obey to become ever more steadfast.

What is the greatest joy of our occupations? To love the very thing that our hands are paid to do. There is no more perfect profession than to love that profession by which one makes his living. There can be no greater joy in life than to love the guidance of the Guide whom you follow. This is the paradise which we may enjoy even in this world.

J

ESUS cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. 45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. 46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. 49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. (John 12:44-50)

The Sermon

He is the Light of the World, and the first Light of Genesis 1:3. Light has always been the the blessing of Heaven, but at the Creation day, God said let there BE Light upon a darkened planet. He also came as that Light which men saw who had sat long centuries in darkness.

We have often referred to Christ as the Light of the World and all that the Light means. A Light reveals the true path of security and righteousness. That is what Christ did for us, and He made it possible for us to have the scales removed from our eyes and hearts that we might be benefitted by that Light which He is. The Way itself is a Way laid out by God the Father. All that Christ did or said was in conformity to that commandment given Him by His Father in Heaven. His death and resurrection made the path available to us, as well.

It would be impossible to believe on Christ and omit the Father. That which the Father is, so is Christ; and that which Christ is, so is the Father. The Triune God of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are truly One in Mind and Purpose. It would not be possible for Christ to act in a manner, or speak in a style, that was not in complete agreement with the Mind of God the Father. We believe in God the Father because we have believed on His only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ – “… like Father, like Son!” He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent meThere is no line of separation, either in Power or Majesty, between God the Father and God the Son. Of no other man could this be said without blasphemy.

We are called Christians because we are, presumably, the children of God in Christ. Just as there are many who are not Israel who are of Israel, so it is true that there is a very large percentage who call themselves Christians but do not approach the qualifications to be so called. 45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. Do you KNOW God the Father? If so, are you bound to His Will by those iron-bars of love that compel obedience to His Commandments and reverence for His only Begotten Son? Jesus was so closely bound in love to the Father that He was precisely like the Father. There could not be daylight between His Will and that of the Father. When folks saw Christ, whether they knew it or not, they were seeing the selfsame likeness of the Father. This presents to us a great question: When people see us, are we so close in Mind and Purpose with that of Christ that they see Jesus? I read a touching illustration of a poor little boy who was standing before a storefront window admiring a pair of shoes. It was winter, and the boy had only wrappings for shoes. A kind lady saw the boy and invited him into the store. She bought him a new pair of shoes along with socks and gloves (it was winter time). When she bade the boy Godspeed and began to leave, he called out behind her: “Say, Ma’am, are you the wife of Jesus?” Should we not all behave in such a way that innocent little minds will think that we are very much like Jesus?

The Way is already laid out from Eternity Past. But who shall be blessed to find that Way in a sin-darkened world? 13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matt 7:13-14) Forgive me if I quote these verses too often, but the meaning is so crucial to our understanding that they must be emblazoned in blood on our hearts and minds. That Road that leads DOWN to destruction owes its ease and comfort to its downward plane. It is wide and filled with far greater numbers than the Narrow Way that leads up life eternal. Why would anyone desire to belong to a small and struggling conglomeration of churches called the AOC? They travel a difficult incline, and the Way they travel is considered, by the more sophisticated of the churches, as Narrow-Minded. Yes, we are Narrow Minded, and I pray that we can keep that Narrow focus on our Lord and savior and not opulent buildings, salaries, and prestige. Those are reserved for the Broad Way that leads down.

But the world is dark and gloomy. How can we find the Way that leads to life eternal? 46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. Jesus came to us in love, and only to those in whom His love is finally reciprocated. He comes as a Light to SHOW us the Way. Those who reject the Light need no judge, for the darkness itself is an overwhelming judgment and relegates their eternity to the fires of Hell. Oh, sorry, Mr. Episcopalian and Mr. Joel Osteen follower – I forgot that the word Hell is a no-no. It makes people unhappy (Osteen). If we are lost in sin, no one can do us a better favor than to teach us of our depravity before God that leads to a remorseful unhappiness that can only be resolved by a direct fleeing to the Throne of Grace. If we have the Light of Christ to illumine our dark souls, then we will see the Way and will follow it.

Does God judge a man and condemn him to Hell? God’s judgment is His Word. It is the Word that will judge us. God has very fairly and openly taught us of His Will in His Word. If we reject that counsel, we have chosen to make our beds in Hell. It was OUR decision! 47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. The world was already lost when Christ came. He simply came bearing the fruits and wisdom of salvation. He came teaching us of the Way, and the Truth and the Life. If we choose to ignore that truth, we simply remain in our lost and damned condition. Even if the world, in its fallen state, were allowed to enter Heaven, it would be the most miserable of all conditions. The world could not obey and reverence the Lord who is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. They would still love their sins, and there would again follow war in Heaven.  That war has already been fought and Satan was cast down along with his errant angels.

Isn’t it a sad state of affairs when you decide to invest in an enterprise against the anguished pleadings of your friends, and then lose all in the gamble? Your friends would have every right to say, “I told you so!” Jesus has, indeed, told us so. 48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last dayWhen we label an openly homosexual practitioner as a profligate sinner, whose judgment is that? It is the judgment of the Word of God and not our own judgment. God’s Word is a two edged sword to either convict of sin for the purpose of salvation, or to condemn of sin for the purpose of legal damnation.

Jesus came as an Emissary of Heaven. There were moments when He was so tired He could hardly lift another foot, yet He kept going from before sunrise until after sunset in teaching and preaching – souls were at stake! He was often thirsty and hungry, wet and cold, yet He kept going for us – all the way to Calvary’s crown. As an Emissary and Likeness of the Father, He came with all of the Authority of Heaven. Emissaries do not make treaties and agreements out of their own imaginations, but in accordance with the Will of the governing authority. In Christ’s case, that governing Authority was God the Father. 49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. What commandment did God give to His Son that seemed different from the Ten given at Sinai? A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another (John 13:34) What function does this valuable essence of love offer? It writes all of the other Commandments upon our hearts in the red blood of love so that it is love that compels our obedience and not fear. 2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: 3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. (2 Cor 3:2-3) Did you catch that brilliant ray of streaming truth, friends? When the world looks at us, they should see the Word of God written upon our hearts. We are the letters (epistles) of God written. No longer written with an iron pen on Tables of Stone, but God’s Law is written with the ink of Love on the fleshy Tables of our Hearts. I love God’s Word, don’t you?

50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. Which single commandment leads to life everlasting? It is the same Commandment called ‘NEW’ given by Christ in John 13:34 above. Love is the one essence that survives death and is victor over ever hateful thing. Christ Himself is LOVE personified. He is our Ark against the coming calamity just as the Ark of Noah was for those eight souls spared from the ravages of the Deluge. Look with me, in conclusion of today’s sermon, at these beautiful truths given in Romans:

A

S IT is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:36-39)

This tells us that the Holy LOVE of which Christ spoke survives every challenge – even death!

Bp Jack brings the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together because as is always the case there is a unifying message in the Scripture for this Sunday.   Bp Jack’s sermon can be viewed on video HERE -> https://youtu.be/JBGgwt86B1U

Good morning! I hope you are all doing well. In today’s sermon we will be looking at the unifying message of the Collect, Epistle and Gospel and examine how they share a common message of action as we continue to celebrate Jesus’ delivery of the promise of life eternal with Him in our life to come.  Easter, perhaps better referred to as the Day of the Resurrection is when the promise of eternal life is delivered.

Let’s start by reading the Collect for today:

The Fourth Sunday after Easter.

The Collect.

O

ALMIGHTY God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

We are in the Easter Season which consists of Easter and the following four Sundays, through Rogation Sunday.  This is a time we should work on centering our lives on the central figure in our religion, Jesus Christ.

Consider these words from the Collect:

… who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found…

The very first phrase is critical to understanding the world and our place in it.  We want to follow our own hearts, that is the unruly wills and affections of sinful men, which will lead us not to heaven but to hell if left unchecked. These unruly wills and affections of ours are what have caused the problems in the world. People wrongfully try and cast blame on God, but it is us that has caused the problems in the world and not God. If we did what God told us to do, the world would not have these problems. These problems all stem because of our natural inclination to not to want to listen to God. The Collect points out that we cannot order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men, as we are but imperfect creatures. Only God can do this and we have to rely on Him to help us get our unruly wills under control and back on the path towards righteousness.

In order to get back on the path towards righteousness, we have to internalize His commands into our hearts through listening and then through repetition, action.  Like any other skill, repetition is key in order to get better with this. This is the only way we can follow His Commandments and show the World we follow Him. For all of the above to happen we have to let God into our hearts, souls, minds and bodies and let His Directions carry us through life. In order to be true believers, we have to actualize our stated beliefs. Actions show that we don’t just talk the talk, but that we walk the walk as well. This means we have to live out our Christian Faith and not just talk about it. This is easier said than done, but it is something that we must do our best to do as much as it lies within us. God can and will help us do this, but only if we let him into our hearts.

Our life will be better when we follow His directions and if we will allow God to rule us and desire His help, we will be able to attain the state of happiness we will then deserve. It may not be what seems to be easy at the time, but we have to trust that God knows that He is doing and that He knows what truly is good for us. And in the end it will be easier than if we went through the “easy” route and took shortcuts in life that aren’t really shortcuts.  He knows what is right and what is wrong for us. He does not want us to lead so called puritanical lives with no fun allowed whatsoever, but we must have fun the right way and not the wrong way. The right way can lead to a lifetime of happiness, whereas the wrong way leads to a life time of misery. It is as St. Paul says moderation in all things. Too much of a good thing can end up becoming a very bad thing. Moderation in all things, as Paul so rightly notes.  This is why God puts limits on us, not to punish us, but to help us live our lives in a spiritual and a physically healthier manner.

Many people think that God forbids things for us, because He does not want us to have fun. Nothing can be further from the truth. He forbids things harmful for our spiritual well being, and encourages us to have clean spiritual, joyous things in our life to develop our spiritual well being. God knows what can hurt our spiritual and physical and mental  health and is advising us to avoid those things so we do not inflict unneeded harm upon our souls, bodies and minds.  Those people confuse the things harmful for our spiritual well being with fun and think things actually helpful for our spiritual well being are not fun. When it is completely not the case. The Holy Spirit will help us to truly see what is harmful for us and what is not harmful for us.

We need God’s help (this is one of the places the Holy Ghost comes in) to be able to want for ourselves that which He Wants for us.  Because clearly we are not capable of doing this on our own without His Help. The Collect asks us to allow God into our hearts to bend our will towards His Will and His Wants.  If we can desire what He Wants, our ability to follow His Instructions will be much enhanced. And not only will they be much enhanced, but the more we follow His Instructions, the easier it will be for us to continue on that straight and narrow path towards heaven. It is like practicing any sort of learned skill, the more you practice at it the better you will get. Of course, we will never be fully perfect at it, but as long as we keep doing our best to get as close as we can to perfection, that is all that matters.

We are God’s creatures, first among all His Creation with all the privileges (which we like) and all the responsibility (which we are not so keen on) which come with that status.  All good comes from God, who is always with us; always the same; a true bearing in world in a constant state of flux. While the world may change, the Word will never change, no matter what happens in the world today. His Word is a refreshing constant, in this world where nothing ever seems certain. The Ways of the World go to and fro, in a constant state of flux. However, God’s Word always stays the same; its meaning never changes, as God never changes. As God is truth, which by its nature cannot change, so should we never change in our beliefs towards Him.

So, how can we hear?

When Jesus got ready to leave this world for His, He told the disciples He would send them the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, to keep them in Him and to help them understand what they had so far been unable to truly grasp.  Unless we allow the Holy Ghost to enter into our hearts, we will never understand that which is from God. This is an important concept with messages that are not from God being bombarded across the world through principalities and powers of this world. Only the Holy Ghost can help us remain grounded within the truth. We need the Holy Ghost to enter into us that we might be able to hear the Word of God, and more important than just hearing the Word, we need the Holy Ghost to be able to act upon the Word. We must allow the Holy Ghost to enter in to our hearts and souls so we can understand what God has for us.  It is that simple.  Open your heart, pray for God to send Him into that open heart.

For with the Holy Ghost’s help, you can hear, understand and act on The Word.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

Fourth Sunday after Easter

Light f the World
28 April 2024, Anno Domini

Psalm 27 • Isaiah 60:13-22 •  John 8:12-30

The Fourth Sunday after Easter.

The Collect.

O

ALMIGHTY God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

As we begin this study this morning let’s “reflect” on what is light.  To understand the great utility of light, whether it be natural or artificial; all one must do is retreat to the country or wilderness devoid of either and look around.  If it is a moonless night the pale stars will provide some illumination, if it is a cloudy night, then you will have none. Now you may add any type of artificial light, whether it be portable or on a wire, and you will get some degree of vision of what is out there in the dark. Truth be known, even with the brightest of lights, you still only see part of the area around you due to the shadows cast by objects and vegetation.

Now if we look at the same scene in the daylight, even on a cloudy day, there is a whole different vision of the area.  The shadows are cast and yet you can see into the shadows with full sun, why?  As the illustration that Christ gave us in this passage from John’s gospel, the light is all consuming. As the sun illuminates or enlightens the whole world, so does Light of the world, Christ.  Ye,s we are talking about two different concepts of light and yet the illustrations are fit.

The sun is a all revealing light to the natural world …and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof… (Ps.19:6b)  So in the same way it is for followers of Christ. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

What an apt illustration.  As the sun is a light to the natural world, so is Christ Jesus a light to his followers here on earth.  A follower of Christ will not walk in darkness.

As the Bible commentator Matthew Henry wrote:

Christ is the Light of the world. God is light, and Christ is the image of the invisible God. One sun enlightens the whole world; so does one Christ, and there needs no more.[1]

Why is that so important today? Why do we need to cling to that wonderful promise today?

With the whole world in chaos and crisis mode many people have begun to despair the future.

They are fearful of what is to come.  The saddest aspect of this fear is that it is not necessary for those who understand and follow the way of Christ.

They shall not be left without the truths which are necessary to keep them from destroying error, and the directions in the way of duty, necessary to keep them from condemning sin.[2]

We are equipped to fight error. God has given us his Word, both in his Son and in the Holy Bible. We have written instructions as to how to deal with the present situation and ANY that should follow.

What a dark dungeon would the world be without the sun! So would it be without Jesus, by whom light came into the world. Those who follow Christ shall not walk in darkness.[3]

We must always remember, unlike the Socialist and Communist, this is not the end of us here on earth.  Jesus told us that he has a place for us and that if he prepared that place for us he will come again and take us to that place.

We find that the universalist and the one world-one people groups do not understand the gospel, they are just like the great learned men of Christ time on earth. They have great knowledge, they can debate the legs off a centipede, they can even argue about how many religions believe in their view of spiritual/world issues, but most importantly, they do not have the Light.

By their very pronouncements and grand publications, documentaries, and even counterfeit belief systems, they still miss the mark.  They have no real hope of anything beyond what they have here.  The whole purpose of making the here and now your “paradise” is to keep the deluded from realizing that there is a spiritual real that is not being addressed.  Satan is great at being the Angel of Light, but as a Liar and deceiver of all mankind.

If we knew Christ better, we should know the Father better. Those become vain in their imaginations concerning God, who will not learn of Christ. Those who know not his glory and grace, know not the Father that sent him.[4]

Now as we look at the last part of this gospel passage we once again see the certification of Christ Jesus to those he ministered to and down through the hall of history to us:

Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. As he spake these words, many believed on him.

So what does that tell us of the essential ministry of Christ?  The final passage reveals a lot.

Those who had followed Jesus for a while could see that he derived his authority from an unseen source. When he kept saying that he and the Father were the same and he did what his Father taught him, the simple folk understood that.  Jesus even gave us an idea that this would be the pattern.  When he gathered little children around him to bless them, the disciples tried to shoo them away. Jesus admonished his close followers with the words But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

In the simple faith of a little one, God has built His kingdom.

We can have all the degrees available to mankind and online degree mills, but unless you come to the Son as an innocent child, you will not see that kingdom.  So the last part of the passage speaks volumes.  ..as he spake these words, many believed on him….  Those who had followed Jesus for a while knew that what he spoke of was true.  The most simple of folks had no problems accepting the WORD.

Nothing but the doctrine of Christ’s grace will be an argument powerful enough, and none but the Spirit of Christ’s grace will be an agent powerful enough, to turn us from sin to God; and that Spirit is given, and that doctrine is given, to work upon those only who believe in Christ.[5]

Beloved. We need to turn to Christ and live. Now is the time of salvation. The base man-generated crisis and chaos is not the end all. He Lives. Christ Jesus lives today. We celebrated the Glorious Resurrection just a few short weeks ago. We must now live it daily. The world has no hope for us. Our hope is in Christ Jesus.

Let us pray:

O

GOD, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Saviour, the Prince of Peace; Give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions. Take away all hatred and prejudice, and whatsoever else may hinder us from godly union and concord: that, as there is but one Body, and one Spirit, and one hope of our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of us all, so we may henceforth be all of one heart, and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and charity, and may with one mind and one mouth glorify thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A

LMIGHTY God, whose blessed Son went about doing good, and healing all manner of sickness; Continue, we beseech thee, this his gracious work among us, especially in the hospitals and infirmaries of our land; cheer, heal, and sanctify the sick; grant to the physicians, surgeons, and nurses wisdom and skill, sympathy and patience; and send down thy blessing on all who labour to relieve suffering and to forward thy purposes of love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A

LMIGHTY Father, who didst send thine only Son that through him all men might be saved; Enable those who teach so to consecrate their lives that, being themselves led of thee, they may lead thy children in the paths of everlasting life; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore.    Amen.

He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!

Fourth Sunday after Easter

Waiting for the Holy Spirit

James 1:17-21 • John 16:5-15

28 April 2024, Anno Domini

Before ascending to Calvary and then ascending to His Father, Our Lord Jesus Christ warns His Apostles But now I go my way to him that sent me. (John 16:5a) The Twelve were shocked to the point that they did not know what to say. Jesus, as a good teacher anxious to verify the knowledge acquired by His disciples, then asks them: … and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? (John 15:5b). The Twelve have no idea. They don’t look into the future. They stand there, longing to stay always with the Master, Christ Jesus. They despair at the thought that He may leave them (John 16:6): But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. The Twelve feel sorry for themselves, just as bereaved Christian families mourn their death, while it is on its way to Heaven in glory. Their main concern is about their own future, not what Christ is going to do – what will become of them, without Him, left in the midst of so many enemies?

The idea of Christ joining His Father on the heavenly throne of divinity does not occur to them. To them, heaven and earth are two separate and watertight worlds, as are heaven and hell. Yet they have seen the miracles wrought by Jesus Christ, by means of the power from on high. But they believe that this power will cease as soon as Christ is no longer there with them on earth. They are Jews, and as such, they know how God intervened in the historical past of their people to guide them out of Egypt, out of the land where their ancestors were slaves – with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm: Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? (Deuteronomy 4:34) The Twelve, therefore, should have known the Eternal Father intervenes on earth according to His will, with no limit, and Jesus confirmed this to them by teaching them the Lord’s prayer, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10).

It is not that the Twelve are lacking faith, but they are so moved by the news of their Master’s departure they lose the memory of the past, so much are they entrenched in the present moment and the immediacy of everyday life.

Christ invites us to see further, higher, and to contemplate God in order to discern His action in our world. There is no need for a telescope to see God, for He remains invisible to our eyes of flesh. But He manifests His presence through His actions. You don’t see the electricity flowing through high-voltage cables; But if you get close to it, you hear a faint whirring, as if the cable was alive. It carries a mass of energy within itself, and its power is such that if we touch it, we are dead, killed by its power; In Exodus 33:20, God said to Moses, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. Imagining that we could see God without suffering the consequences would be sheer folly. So let us be content to know that He exists, that He created us all, that He knows us by our first name, that He loves us and proves it to us by sending us His only begotten Son to die in our place, so that we can join Him in Heaven. Then we will see Him, but not with our eyes of flesh. We will be united to Him and we will see Him as Christ sees the Father, with a gaze of fusional and eternal love, in perfect submission and accord to His will. This is the true communion to which God invites us: a participation into His glory.

And Christ promises this glory to His disciples, those who believe in Him and hope for His return in glory And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (Matthew 24:30)  And He will make us partakers of His glory, as Peter says in his First Epistle to encourage us to patience … the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. (1 Peter 5:10) Yes, He will set us up with Him in HIS glory – not ours!

But in order for us to be fully strengthened and encouraged, we need the power from on high, we need the Holy Spirit. See how weak the Twelve themselves were… Who among us doesn’t have electricity at home? This powerful energy can kill us if we fool with it, not obeying the commandments of caution, but it is also a blessing to us when it is put to our proteus by an electrical transformer – the Holy Spirit. This is what Jesus teaches His disciples in the Gospel of John: Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.  (John 16:7)

Once more, Christ is right, He knows that we need a Comforter. But at this very moment, Our Lord still has the use of it, as long as He dwells on earth, in our midst. However, once He ascends to Heaven, to the source of divine power, He no longer needs it as much, and He can get rid of it and send it to us! A bit like a power plant, the source of electrical power, emits its energy into the grid without losing any of its own capacity to produce electricity and adapts its production to consumption, in the absence of any possible large-scale storage. And this energy is free, just like electricity is free in Iceland. God produces as much grace as we need, if we ask Him for it, through prayer. He who asks for nothing receives nothing, but God’s grace is freely given to His adopted children who ask Him for it, in faith.

But be careful! Divine grace does not belong to us! It remains the property of God and under His control, and the Holy Spirit works according to His divine will: (John 16:8): And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment Hey, this is meany! But Christ selectively chooses men; He doesn’t put everyone in the same boat. On His left He places unrepentant sinners (v. 9): Of sin, because they believe not on me These are not connected to the electricity distribution network and exhaust themselves in vain, relying uselessly on their own strength to achieve glorification. At His right hand He places His faithful believers: repentant sinners (v. 10): Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; As you have heard, the Holy Spirit declares us to be righteous, for we are justified by faith … as it is written, The just shall live by faith.  (Romans 1:17b)   And in John 20:29b, it is written: … blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

As for Satan, the great tempter, his fate was sealed by the resurrection of our Lord Christ. Having conquered death and overpowered Satan, Christ leaves behind an empty tomb. Before His eyes, the list of our sins is equally empty, our faults and transgressions are blotted out, if we believe and repent of every disobedience to God, whether voluntary or not. This is what Jesus foretells in John 16, verse 11: Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. No man could have invented such words. Proof that they are truly inspired of God, dictated by the same Holy Spirit.

The Twelve are astonished. They don’t know what to say. Then Jesus postpones His teaching until later, until the day of Pentecost when they will receive the ability to understand all the Master’s Words; they will then be informed (John 16:12-15): I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the Father and of the Son who has been handed down to us since Pentecost, through apostolic succession, free of charge.

Note that Pentecost corresponds to the Jewish feast of the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai. The Holy Spirit’s mission is indeed to remind us of the Law, but not in a spirit of outward, moralizing and servile obedience – God engraves this Law in our hearts, to the point that it becomes a second nature to us: we are transformed, regenerated, born again; we are adopted sons and daughters of Jesus Christ’s own Father For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people (Hebrews 8:10) Our heart is a battery connected to the network of divine grace. We transmit this grace to those around us, through the radiance of love. We are then living stones, as if electrified, of the Church, the Bride of Christ, remembering that Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. (James 1:17-18)

And we oppose love to anger. The same Epistle of James reminds us: Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. (James 1:19-20. Let us leave the judgment to our Eternal Father, for He alone can read the hearts of men.

Let’s not imagine, for the sake of boasting, that we have a red phone connecting us directly to the Holy Spirit, that we could receive special, personal revelations. That would be a serious mistake. The Holy Spirit invents nothing new, nothing that is not already written in the Bible: Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed (James 1:21-25)

The Holy Spirit reminds us of the Law, for we are forgetful: But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. (James 1:25)  Please pay close attention to this: The Holy Spirit in us does not promise us happiness, pleasure, and satisfying all our desires. It enables us to succeed in what God expects of us: that is, our obedience to His will, and our testimony of God’s love, offered freely.

Why should we be angry when we have the assistance of the Holy Ghost and the promise to share in the glory of God in Heaven? We are indifferent and impassive in the face of anything that may happen to us here on earth, good or evil, as was Moses, who had his eyes fixed on the goal: By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.  (Hebrews 11:27)  Then we can say with Paul: I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:7-8)

My friends, let us put these eternal truths in our minds: through baptism we have received the Holy Spirit promised by Our Lord Jesus Christ to His disciples, and not only to the Twelve and their successors, the bishops: The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. (Romans 8:16) We are all servants of the same Truth. We all benefit from the same promise. And we will all be glorified in heaven on the day of judgment, for we are already justified if we are in Christ, through faith. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint Johns Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Fourth Sunday after Easter

In our Old Testament lesson from Job (19:25-27), we find God’s plan for a resurrection to life. For I know that my redeemer liveth, and the he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: and though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me. This passage is also found in our prayer book on page 324 under The Order for the Burial of the Dead. The rubrics tell us that the minister will meet the body at the church door or at the grave and going before it shall say those words along with, I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die… We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

Every mortal faces the inevitability of death. It has pained human beings throughout the ages with a dread of being separated from this life because this is all we know. Secular historians and modernist bible critics have often postulated that the development of “religion” stemmed from man’s attempts to explain, or come to terms with, those realities which were beyond his capabilities to perform or control. Without a doubt, the reality of death has played a significant role in that cause. Certainly men can kill, and have done so quite frequently. And, from time to time, individuals have taken their own lives. But in the natural course of things, people are as in the dark about their passing from this life as they are about their birth into the same. And like our birth, death is also a powerless moment for each of us because death reveals our greatest weakness. Consider the banner quote of one website which says, “On a long enough timeline the survival rate for everyone drops to zero’ and every person since Adam is aware of the truth that statement. Those who once lived know about Death first hand, whereas the living know of its work via the passing of family and friends. Death is unavoidable. The ancients of the Classical World had a epitaph which summed up the matter at hand: ‘As you are, I once was. As I am, so you shall be.’ Ergo, our passing from this life is not a matter of IF but WHEN.

And death threatens mankind in a way little else can. Look at your daily activities and count the ways you may become fearful for your life or that of another. Everything from another person sneaking up behind you and scaring you “to death”, or when you experience a “close call” such as a near-miss with another vehicle on the highway, or getting so sick that, as the old folks would say, you were “at death’s door.” Figures of speech to be sure, but they nevertheless have a basis in fact from times past. So even the best of Christians will have such anxious moments as those mentioned.

Now you might think that the unregenerate would be doubly fearful regarding their passing from this life. After all, they have no Saviour on which to lean for comfort, and no Redeemer who has paid the price for their lives. Still a fair number will attempt to shut such out of their minds. They may use pagan mysticism. They’ll just say the right words or the proper chants and bingo, there they are in whatever state of mind they wish. Some may even embrace a form of Christianity while avoiding the requirements for godly living. And, as part of their faith system, they may entertain a belief in God’s “justice-love” for all people, and that he will open the kingdom of heaven to the unregenerate as well as those who are regenerated in Christ. That’s nice, and that’s PC. There is no negativity. You can just live as you wish and there are no consequences of an eternal or everlasting nature. I have searched the scriptures in vain to find any reference which would support such a belief system for clearly, it is a fantasy— or rather a phantasy— that will lead them into the greatest nightmare of all. A nightmare from which they will never awaken.

On the other hand, I have found numerous passages that communicate the polar opposite of their wishful thinking. Many have heard the words in John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. “Oh yes” the unregenerate will say, “there is the proof text for our position.”  They may even offer up the next verse which says, For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. “Enough said?” But consider verse 18 which says, He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

The colonial preacher, Jonathan Edwards once noted, “God has laid himself under no obligation, by any promise to keep any natural man out of hell [for] one moment. God certainly has made no promises either of eternal life, or of any deliverance or preservation from eternal death, but what are contained in the covenant of grace, the promises are given in Christ… But surely they have no interest in the promises of the covenant of grace who are not the children of the covenant, who do not believe in any of the promises, and have no interest in the Mediator of the covenant. So that, whatever some have imagined and pretended about the promises made to natural men’s earnest seeking and knocking, it is plain and manifest, that whatever pains a natural man takes in religion, whatever prayers he makes, till he believes in Christ, God is under no manner of obligation to keep him a moment from eternal destruction.” In short, the unregenerate “have no refuge, nothing to take hold of; all that preserves them every moment is the mere arbitrary will, and unconvenanted, unobligated forbearance of an incensed God.” To quote a modern wit, the unregenerated should, “Be afraid. Be very, very afraid.” And, to tell the truth, I suspect that very many of them have a sneaking suspicion that there is the God of the Bible who is waiting on them and that makes them edgy and fearful. But not enough to turn them unto him and be saved.

As Christians, we understand our heavenly Father knows well our fear of death and dying and that is why he inspired several writers of Holy Scripture to include passages such our Old Testament lesson from Job. God wants us to be comforted knowing that as his servants we will be redeemed from this body of sin and death. As St. Paul said, O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? (Romans 7:24)?to which the Holy Ghost gave him to reply, I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord… (Romans 7:25) for, There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit (Romans 8:1). Jesus Christ is our redeemer kinsman who shed his blood that we might live. He is the one that Job was talking about in our lesson today. Only God the Son was made flesh and walked among us. And only he can save us from our sins and give us everlasting life.

Ideally, every Christian ought to heed God’s word written for it tells us that death has no terrors for the regenerated soul in Christ. The apostle Paul noted that if we are absent the body, we are present with the Lord (II Corinthians 5:1-10). The body will indeed deteriorate and be reduced to dust but our souls will live on with the Lord until that day, as Job so noted, when we will be given a new body that will last for eternity. We will once more stand on the earth and see God the Redeemer with our own eyes and know then the truth of the scriptures which we heard today for we will be the living examples of it.

Let us close with a word from the great English pastor, Charles H. Spurgeon who said, “Death is… a return from exile, a going home to the many mansions where the loved ones already dwell. The distance between glorified spirits in heaven and militant saints on earth seems great; but it is not so. We are not far from home— a moment will bring us there… When the eyes close on earth they open in heaven.” Only in Jesus Christ is there redemption from death, hell and the grave. Only in Jesus Christ are we freed from our sins via his atoning work on Calvary’s cross. Only in Jesus Christ is there hope of salvation.

If you have not already done so, I encourage you to embrace the Lord Jesus as your Saviour. Accept his free gift to you by confessing he is Lord of all your life. Confess your sins to the Father in his name, and then live as a redeemed and blessed child of God and inheritor of the kingdom of heaven. If you will do that, a glorious future awaits you for God is willing that none be lost.

Let us pray,

M

OST gracious and loving God, aid our witness to the unregenerate, that they too might be joined with all thy saints in thy coming kingdom through a true and abiding faith in thine only begotten Son; for these things we ask in his most precious name. Amen.

Have a blessed week,

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  Wed like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Rachael is in intensive care in one hospital and Lydia was treated and released at another hospital.  Please pray for peace of mind and soul for the Richards, and for the medical team treating them that they might pay attention, do their very best and be open to God’s guidance.  Pray also for what we desire as a good result.

2100 27 April 2025 Update

We are one day away from the day that changed our lives forever. How fitting, then, that today Rachael finally got to see Lydia (the one she saved in the accident). All the kids are doing well and so is Rachael. She still has head pain (the main prayer request) and is low on energy, but she is still improving every day. Thanks be to God!

1930 26 April 2025 Update

Rachael did great today with all her therapies, and today she had an extra one with two eye doctors. Praise report they said both eyes are fine! She did have some nerve damage to her left, but it is possible that within 6-12 months it could correct itself on its own, possibly without surgery! All the kids are doing well also. Praise the Lord for His mercy and grace!

2000 24 April 2025 Update

Rachael had a slow start today, but she ended up doing great and initiated wanting me to take her outside! And she also folded five of her shirts! Thought I would share a video for the update since this was another big milestone for her. Supposedly less than two weeks away from discharge day!Thank you for praying!

2300 24 April 2024 Update

Sorry this is a little late, it was an eventful day! Physical therapy cleared me to lift Rachael in and out of her wheelchair. So no more assistance from nurses! Now we have freedom to leave the room when we want to use bathroom, or go outside etc. She had another great day, stayed awake and alert longer, had pain but didn’t seem to notice it as much. OT had her assemble a small shelf, then had her fold clothes and put them on the shelf. PT had her stand up in a walker and do some excercizes. Speech therapy had more of a question and answer session, asking her questions like what was the name of her church, and getting to know her. I’m hearing rumors that OT may start getting ingredients for recipes so Rachael can try cooking next week!  The end of the day was highlighted by separate video calls with Isaiah, Lydia, and Hannah. This was the first time Rachael got to talk to Lydia since she saved her in the accident. Other than Isaiah who is having a bad cold, the girls seem to be improving.  For prayer, continue to pray that Rachael’s headaches would go away, and for her memory to continue to improve. Lots to praise God for, including the incredibly long list of people who have visited, given cards, given gifts, and prayed. There’s not nearly enough space to list everyone who has helped, just know you are loved.

If you are still planning to visit, you can come anytime between 6am-8pm, but the best window of time to visit is 4-7pm as Rachael’s therapies end and she’s had time to rest. PM or text me with any questions

1845 23 April 2024 Update

Rachael did very well today. Briefly sick this morning, otherwise she killed it in all three therapy appointments. Drew a picture with crayons, tried leg stretching excercises, and stayed awake much longer today. I only got updates from Isaiah and Lydia today, but it sounds like they are doing great. She also had a catscan for precautionary purposes, and it was stable. For prayer, pray Rachael’s headaches would go away and the different medicine combinations they are trying would continue to result in less pain. She is making daily progress thanks in part to your support and prayers. Thank you!

1730 22 April 2024 Update

Rachael continues to slowly progress. She rested a lot more today. Was able to play a timed game with occupational therapy with each hand and did very well. She also got to eat breakfast sitting up in her wheelchair.  The kids all have various levels of illness, but only Hannah officially tested for Covid. Pray that they would all heal up soon.  Not much else to share on my end, other than the Carpenter family seems to be on the mend. Thank you for praying!

1840 21 April 2024 Update

Rachael and I talked on the phone today for first time since accident. She is definitely able to process things better. The doctor gave her a special nasal medicine that seemed to help with some of her head pain (the primary problem). She also still has eye, ear, and back pain. She probably thinks I am a pain too  I was able to take Isaiah to church. I think it goes without saying that the support I received was incredible, as expected.  Pray for Hannah’s doctor apt tomorrow (Monday), and for Sarah Ballantine’s daughter Nadia’s apt Wednesday. Sarah is watching Lydia. Pray also for healing for the Paul Carpenter family (breathing related), and for energy and patience for both sets of our parents watching Isaiah and Hannah.

1700 20 April 2024 Update

Good day again for Rachael, she ate much better today. She still had pain but not as intense as yesterday. The big news today was she got to see Hannah! Initially Hannah just wanted me to hold her but this gave Rachael a chance to recollect, after the accident, some of the songs she sang to the kids. After awhile she remembered, and Hannah started to warm up to her again. Interestingly, the first song that Rachael sang to her without someone else initiating it was Amazing Grace. Some photos forthcoming but I will share what I have so far. Thank you for praying!

1800 19 April 2024 Update

Rachael did great again today! She was extra tired and sore however she wowed the speech therapist with how well she did from the previous day. I also got to push her in her wheelchair for the first time to an open air of the hospital where she defeated me in a game of connect four.  The big news today was Rachael finally got to see Isaiah for the first time in 22 days! It was obvious he was glad to see both of us. Lydia and Hannah are still recovering but doing well.

1130 18 April 2024 Update

Rachael had trouble sleeping due to head pain, but her first day of intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy went very well! She stood up briefly and also got to try out her new wheelchair. The infectious disease team says because of the results of her central nervous system (CNS infection) the plan is to keep her here at OSU Dodd for 4 weeks with a tentative release date of 2 May 2024.  Hannah was released from Children’s. She does have covid officially as does her grandpa, Jeff, but the symptoms are more akin to colic. They are both doing well. She will be staying with him in the meantime.  Thank you for praying!

1630 17 April 2024 Update

  1. Rachael was discharged from Miami Valley at 12:37 today and we are now comfortably settled into our room at OSU Dodd Hall in Columbus. If you visit, text or PM me in advance so I can give you parking and room directions. She ate better today and is resting and settling in well. Visiting hours are 6am-8pm but **please** let me know in advance when you plan to visit. The hospital does not require it, and children are welcome, however due to Rachael’s sensory condition and vigorous rehab program, I am asking all visitors to arrange a time to visit with me in advance with so that she is not overloaded. There is a Panera and Wendy’s within walking distance, and a playground adjacent for anyone bringing children. I’m being told most patients stay here 3 weeks or less.
  2. Last night Hannah (our youngest) had major breathing problems. Sarah took her to ER and rode in an ambulance with her to Nationwide Children’s. She has Covid. Her grandpa Jeff visited her and as a precautionary has to stay with her in a locked room for 5 days.
  3. Isaiah and Lydia are both doing well, although even Lydia had a scare with tornado warnings in her area.
  4. Both the Carpenter and Ballentine families, who have helped watch our kids and helped in other areas are dealing with various forms of illness and fatigue.
  5. I still have laryngitis, although not quite as bad. Lots to pray for, and lots to praise God for. As always, thank you all for everything!

0830 17 April 2024 Update

Attention prayer warriors; start your engines! It’s about to get real!!

  1. Rachael is getting discharged from hospital today. She is having lots of pain and this morning she was very sick (likely a response to medication). Pray for her transition to rehab at OSU Dodd Hall
  2. Hannah, our youngest, was taken to the ER in Bellefontaine early this morning with breathing troubles. It sounds like she has Covid.
  3. I have laryngitis, which is making it difficult to talk to all the doctors, different hospitals.
  4. Paul Carpenter, who helped watch the kids over the weekend, is also having breathing troubles (likely related to past pneumonia). ER trip for him is pending.
  5. My parents are watching Isaiah in Columbus, Sarah is watching Lydia in Belle Center (one of her kids recently had surgery and there is possible sickness there as well) and Rachael’s dad Jeff took off work to care for Hannah in Columbus (if she is transferred). Pray they do not get sick!

Needless to say, the battle is real but nothing will shake us!!

1520 16 April 2024 Update

After all the prayers, it has been confirmed that Rachael will be discharged from the hospital tomorrow! She will be transferred to OSU Dodd Hall in Columbus, OH for rehab. So if there are any visitors near the Dayton, OH area that would like to see Rachael here one last time, today is your last chance!  She has been a little weaker today, not eating as much. I think she just needs more rest. As expected, she has had a lot of pain in her head, but also some dizziness, and some vision trouble in one of her eyes. Pray that a little rest would take care of that.

1930 15 April 2024 Update

Another good day for Rachael. She was a little weaker in the morning, but by the afternoon and evening she not only sat up on her own several times, but she ask me if I could read the Bible to her! She was also able to read some things on her phone. She surprised speech therapy in how well she did with her memory. And, of course, chocolate lover she is, she ate her entire brownie . I did find it interesting that one of the first things she wanted to do on her phone, was to check up on her friend and see how her new baby was doing. Discharge is still a possibility in the near future! Keep praying!

1800 14 April 2024 Update

Rachael had a great day. Rested well, followed more commands, and communicated a lot better. I could tell people were praying!  I also got to see the kids again on a dinner invitation from the Carpenters. So thankful for the Ballentines, Lewis’s, family, and others helping to care for the children, and drive them from point A to point B. I am hearing rumblings about an imminent discharge which would be amazing had you seen the condition Rachael was in prior to today. Please pray for this transition to go well whenever it happens!  So thankful, as always, for all the support of every kind during this challenging time. We could not get through it without God working in and through you!

0600 13 April 2024 Update

She slept a lot more today and ate better. She talked quite a bit while she was awake and I couldn’t help but think about what she repeated more than anything Can we go home to see the children in Belle Center? Had I been in her shoes, the first thing out of my mouth would have likely been about my pain and discomfort. The last thing she did before her accident was save Lydia’s life. One of the first things she did after her own life was saved was ask about the children. That tells you all you need to know about Rachael.   Now all that’s needed is time. And patience for God to work His healing power in His time. Thank you for your prayers and support!

0600 12 April 2024 Update

After a good visit with the children, I got back to see Rachael and was told I had 20 minutes to pack our stuff as we were going to be evicted from the ICU! We got settled in the trauma unit last night. Praise the Lord!  For visitors, there are no changes except for the elevator to take and the room. PM me If you are planning to visit and I will give you updated room info.  As of now she has no feeding tubes, and she is eating on a specific diet. Although prior to her being on a fixed diet, I was able to sneak in a piece of beef jerky and one of my mom’s homemade chocolate chip cookies which she ate (don’t judge!)  For prayer, pray Rachael would regain more memory and respond more to commands. She is talking a lot, but lots of repetitive, incoherent sentences. Although a praise is one of the words she continues to repeat is Jesus! Overnight I heard her saying the Lord needs to save all these people. Also prayer for my family as a whole in general, for the children, and the families who are watching the children now and in the near future.

0600 11 April 2024 Update

Yesterday was definitely one of the hardest days for Rachael and I, but by God’s grace we got through it. Rachael has been taking lots of baby steps; conversing more, eating food, and sitting in a   chair with her helmet.  Also, she got the feeding tube out of her nose today, hopefully for good! And Lord willing could be moved to trauma unit as soon as one opens up. Thanks to the Lewis family, I was able to see all my kids for an extended visit at Chick-fil-A in Dayton. Man, it was so good to see them again.  Progress, but a long road ahead. Many needs remain and many unknowns exist. But I believe in a faithful God who sovereignty carries out His will and will get me through.

0600 10 April 2024 Update

She is doing so much better! Yesterday PT helped her stand up on her own and she put a sock on her foot by herself! She has been conversing a lot more and today besides talking about wanting the children and parents she said The Lord needs us to be here. Yesterday I also was blessed to meet Jesse, the man who life flighted her to the hospital, and was treated by a visit of 14 Mennonites from my old church Bethesda Fellowship.  Today speech therapy had her try a swallow test which she passed with flying colors. Now she is attempting to eat solid foods for first time since accident!  Pray for Isaiah who has a stomach bug, and that it won’t spread; Lord willing I will get to visit the kids tomorrow! Pray for a good visit. And thank you all for your gifts, support, and prayers!

0600 9 April 2024 Update

She had a great day yesterday. Speech therapy had her taste ice cubes so see if she could swallow, which she did successfully. Physical therapy had her sit up in bed, which she did almost by herself. They let me give her a hug too. She has been conversing more, and overall has been in a good mood all things considering. Today, Lord willing she will get to put on her new helmet to protect her head. Thank you for praying!

0600 8 April 2024 Update

She had a great day yesterday in terms of rest and talking more coherently. Her MRI didn’t work out due to movement, so will have to have another soon. But she says things like Can you help me and Honey come here. She also called me darling, and this morning said sit with me. She also asked how are the children. I showed her some photos and videos. She still can’t say any of our names, but she seems to know who we are.

0600 7 April 2024 Update

She woke up a few times last night saying things like honey come here and when she saw me, I saw her give me an air kiss. Her eyes have not been centered when she opens them but fever appears to be gone. She is currently having another MRI on her brain and neck. She has been, ironically enough resting well on the Lord’s Day. Another nursing student from Cedarville has been helping. It seems like when we have a shift of a nurse who is positive and upbeat, Rachael seems to improve. So pray that continues. And as always I appreciate all your prayers and support. Joshua+

0600 6 April 2024

Her fever has been up and down but at the moment is gone. The swelling around her eye appears to be gone as well. Beyond that, after speaking to the doctor it sounds like there are a lot of unknowns, and a LOT of different doctors and tests/scans today. Pray for more answers, and energy and rest for Rachael. The kids last I heard are doing well also. Pray for one of the children of the families watching our kids for recovery from surgery. This has been an additional burden on a lot of people now and will likely be as time goes on. If you are still interested in helping our family and wondering how, PM or text me the way in which you are willing and I can let you know what is needed. Many needs have been met, but there may be areas I have not considered either for our family or for the families who are helping us indefinitely. Thank you for your help and prayers.

0600 5 April 2024

She slept well last night. This morning the doctor had to stitch up a hole on her scalp from surgery. As a precautionary, she is having an MRI to ensure there is no infection. She is still talking with deep breaths, but primarily repeating words like okay and please can you help me. Having pain in stomach area. Also has had a fever of 102. The swelling in her eye has gone down some. The MRI should be around 1030 this morning and take an hour so I will update more later or tomorrow. Thank you for praying!

0600 2 April 2024 Update

Rachael had a great day yesterday and a great night. She is nodding, pointing, and looking multiple directions more, and resting well. Still on ventilator. They tried her breathing on her own yesterday which she did briefly but they decided she needed a little more time. The prayer request would be for her to get strong enough that she can follow commands quicker without thinking. The kids have been in excellent hands, and are eating and sleeping well, and having fun. It is truly mind-blowing how the body of Christ has come together to not only care for our families physical needs, but Spiritual also. I have had almost 40 visitors, some driving 6-10 hours round trip. Some dropping their plans, and leaving large families to stay for hours just to make sure I am okay. And even with what appears to be more stormy Ohio weather headed our way, I can truly say in more ways than one I’ll praise You in this storm. There is Light at the end of the tunnel. Joshua+

0600 31 March 2024 Update

I was told that depending on how she responds/doesn’t respond to commands, that she could very likely have some type of aphasia. Please pray God would deliver her from that possibility; especially after the encouraging news this morning about her brain. And thank you all again for…everything  Rachael is still fighting. The urgent specific prayer for her would be responding to commands from doctors and nurses and cooperating. That way she can get off oxygen and try to talk.  The doctor still thinks there is a good chance she will recover acceptably.  That is all for now.

0118 30 March 2024 Update

Update on Rachael. And it is a praise item! The nurse woke me at 2am to update me that Rachael has more bodily movement and can respond with her head in a nod, can turn her head side to side, and she has been moving her left arm! Up until today she had only been able to move her right arm and right leg. Praise God!

Here are specific requests for Rachael as of now:

  • Pray that Rachael could respond to commands (wiggle your toes, give me thumbs up etc)
  • Pray that if she responds to the above, that she could come off oxygen. Her lungs are okay!
  • She is able to see and hear. To what extent I am unsure so pray that she can hear, see, talk, etc as much as before
  • Pray she can move her left leg. Her left foot does have a small hairline fracture.
  • Pray when the nurses do her regular tests that Rachael would cooperate. She always was a little stubborn

Requests for our kids:

  • Pray for family and friends watching and caring for them over the days, weeks, and months ahead. Isaiah is 5, Lydia is 3, and Hannah is 1. Because of their ages, they of course have specific needs. Pray specifically not only for their physical needs being met, but especially for their spiritual needs.
  • Praise God for good health, especially for Lydia as she had been in two car accidents over the last few months and has shown no signs of injury either time. Because she has autistic tendencies, there is no way for her to talk and communicate what she needs, how she feels, and now her mother is in the same condition.

Requests for me:

  • Pray I would get my wife and closest friend back the way she was. And if not, that God would prepare me emotionally, Spiritually, and physically for what changes to expect.
  • Pray I could see my kids soon. I miss them dearly, but I cannot leave Rachael.
  • Pray that I would have the joy of Jesus during moments of condemnation.
  • Pray that God would give me confidence in Him during Spiritual attacks; particularly as it relates to how I treated Rachael prior to accident. That God would give me discernment with triggers that cause attacks, because I need to be strong for Rachael!
  • Pray for my personal walk with God; prayer life, time in the Word etc.
  • Pray for wisdom related to finances, bills etc.
  • Pray for patience and peace with God’s will and timing.
  • Praise God for all the visitors and pray God would send more! Visiting hours are 8am-8pm at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH. PM or text me for room info.

Most importantly,

  • Pray that God would reveal how He wishes to be glorified by this ordeal,
  • He would be preparing me for opportunities to share the Gospel and empathize with nurses, other patients, visitors etc now and perhaps friends or family in the future.

Of course, praise God for all the prayer warriors all over the WORLD and for all the answered prayers and (from my viewpoint) unanswered prayers. For so many churches and church leaders praying, for so many hugs, calls, cards, words of wisdom, encouragement etc. I love you all!!!

0430 29 March 2024 Update – Good Friday

Thank you so much to everyone who has prayed, offered to help, and visited me at the hospital. Some people drove many, many hours just to be here and pray. I have no words for my gratitude. I just want to say I am humbled and overwhelmed with joy for the support shown during this difficult chapter in our family thus far. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you. As far as updates, the situation is fluid, but Lydia was released from the hospital. She is fine. Our other children are being watched by my parents, bless their hearts, and are also doing well.

For those of you who were unaware of exactly what happened, you have my permission to share this:  Rachael walked across the street to get the mail at our house, and Lydia was with her. Apparently she ran a little too far ahead of Rachael and somehow a truck struck Rachael causing her to fall and hit her head. By God’s grace, Lydia’s life was saved I suspect Rachael protected her from the truck. Rachael, however was not so lucky. She has a major laceration to the back of her head and had to be life-flighted to ICU. She is in stable condition (as of this post). She had to have part of her skull removed and plastic surgery was performed successfully. The team at the hospital has done an outstanding job of caring for her.

Needless to say, life is about to change significantly for us. I have no idea if the woman who said I do over 7 years ago will ever be the same again. I do not know how our three children will be able to handle mommy not being around indefinitely. There are many more questions. One thing is for sure, God is in control and all things work together for good to those who love God.

If anyone wants any additional info or has any questions, please send me a PM or text me if you have my number.

Love in Christ,

+Joshua

Columbiq

I am writing to request your prayers for Colombia, my country. At this moment frightful things are happening, a great diabolical shadow is cast over this nation.

  1. The Constitutional Court in a tyrannical way has decriminalized the crime of abortion in Colombia, even up to six months. This is an illegitimate process, the court is legislating, something that is not within the competence of the judges, on the other hand the issue of abortion was a cause judged in 2006, which is why it should not be judged again in 2022. But socialist groups, international elites, social engineers and feminist groups have not given up on the issue. They want to traffic in death.

  1. The candidate of the extreme left Gustavo Petro is close to become the president of Colombia, this is a man who in his youth was a guerrilla criminal, a vile and despicable man who has always served the interests of drug trafficking, he was an advisor to Chavez who implanted Communism in Venezuela, his second home is Communist Cuba.

  1. The same court approved the movement of Gustavo Petro called: la Colombia Humana, it gave him the status of a political party, with this, he has the possibility of getting to introduce at least 15 congressmen, basically he is close to kidnapping all the powers, he already has the judicial power in his pocket, he only lacks the executive and the legislative. We are close to the precipice, we trust in a miracle of God.

We hope you support us with your prayers, I will ask the brothers to pray unceasingly so that in his mercy we will be saved from these perverse men. God bless you and keep you in all things.

Your servant in Christ, Bishop José Antonio Rios

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

[6] Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells.  While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.  The most common cause of death related to multiple myeloma is infection, with pneumonia being the most common fatal infection. Other common causes of death are bleeding (from low platelet counts), complications of bone fractures, kidney failure, and blood clots in the lungs.
