First Sunday after the Epiphany Sunday Report

Today was the first Sunday after the Epiphany:

The Epiphany, or the Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles

What a long title for a simple thought.  The Epiphany is the title of the feast recalling the arrival of the Magi to pay homage to the Lord Jesus.  Epiphany means revealing or becoming aware.  Our Lord was revealed first to the Hebrews through the shepherds; the first gentiles (non-Hebrews) to whom He was first revealed were the Magi or Wise Men who came from afar to pay Him honor.

Epiphany is a fixed day, it is always the Sixth of January, twelve or thirteen days after Christmas Day, depending on how you count.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

The Force be with You

One reason why many people find Creative Evolution so attractive is that it gives one much of the emotional comfort of believing in God and none of the less pleasant consequences. When you are feeling fit and the sun is shining and you do not want to believe that the whole universe is a mere mechanical dance of atoms, it is nice to be able to think of this great mysterious Force rolling on through the centuries and carrying you on its crest. If, on the other hand, you want to do something rather shabby, the Life-Force, being only a blind force, with no morals and no mind, will never interfere with you like that troublesome God we learned about when we were children. The Life-Force is a sort of tame God. You can switch it on when you want, but it will not bother you. All the thrills of religion and none of the cost. Is the Life-Force the greatest achievement of wishful thinking the world has yet seen?

Becoming unequally yoked with unbelievers in intimate and confiding friendships creates exposed positions of which the Devil takes great advantage. Partnership in business or the more sacred union of marriage with unbelievers is perilous to the believer in Jesus Christ… He and Christ cannot be joined in agreement. No unequal yoking, no fellowship, no communion, no agreement can

exist. The result is contamination and impurity. The fruit of these voluntary close yokings is a weakened spiritual condition.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard.  It is quite interesting the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States.  Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church.  Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of the nation.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by the minister or in the case of Morning or Evening Prayer without a minister by the senior member present.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Epistle for today came from the Twelfth Chapter of Paul’s letter to the Romans beginning at the First Verse. Paul asks not only those long gone Romans, but us, as well, to “present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”  He tells us our home is in heaven.  Life here is not the end, rather the stepping off point, either to heaven or hell.  Thus, were are “not conformed to this world: but to be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that we ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”  Some of us may be better than others, but all fall short of the minimum standard.  Through Christ we attain eternal life.  In the meantime, each of us should not “think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”  Each of us has a place in the church, a reason to be and job to do.  “For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.”

I

 BESEECH you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

The Gospel for today came from the Second Chapter of the Gospel of St. Luke beginning at the Forty-First Verse.  It tells the story of when Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem after the Passover Feast in his twelfth year.  When they were done, the family group, for they likely traveled with their extended family for safety, left together.  After the first day’s travel they stopped for the night and could not find Jesus.  So, fearing the worst, they headed back at night for Jerusalem.  Braving robbers and worse, they made their way back.   After looking for three days, they went to the temple, where lo, they found him[1].  He was among the learned men “both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.”  His parents were amazed and confounded.  He asked them why they worried and why they did not understand that he was about his Father’s business.  It is noteworthy that Jesus at twelve was able to “hold his own” with the learned scholars of Judah.  He was able to out reason those who lived to dissect the Law.  “A little child shall lead them,” (Isaiah 11:1-10)

N

OW his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist[2] ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

The Collect

The overarching point of the Prayer of Collect for this Sunday is the Call to duty! We owe a duty to family, to Country, and to our neighbors. But our greater duty is to God which, if we faithfully fulfill, we shall be justified in the performance of our duty to all others.

Have you ever been very close to Christ and suddenly, through your complacency and neglect, found you are separated, by a vast expanse, from your Lord? Is it even possible for one who is intimate with Christ to become separated? Have you omitted the Daily Bread that sustains you? I am afraid that it is the most common occurrence rather than the exceptional one.  Peter once became separated from Christ in the Garden at Gethsemane and lost all courage during the separation. The circumstances may even, at times, be reversed. For example: the men on the road to Emmaus believed they had been forever separated from Christ while he walked at their very side. Separation from Christ, either actual or perceived, is a failure of faith.

We will learn in today’s Gospel text even the mother, and earthly father (for God was His true Father), of Jesus became separated from their son for three days or more:

N

OW his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

(Luke 2:41-52)

The Sermon

There are a few salient points brought out in this text that are worthy of elaboration all of which relate to our Duty to God and others:

  1. Jesus attended to his religious responsibilities in going up to Jerusalem every Passover. His parents even set the example for Jesus had He needed an example. It is very important that the young children of the church sit with their parents during worship rather than being separated to a period of silly play-church. When children observe their parents doing their Christian duty, a powerful impression is made – and a lasting one. Jesus and His parents observe the good order, reverence, and customs of the established feasts. Jesus enjoyed a warm family environment growing up in tiny Nazareth. He, like all of us, was accustomed to hearing His mother’s call to supper.

  1. Note the relationship of Mary and Joseph to Jesus. In the KJV (Received Text) they are referred to as Joseph and His MOTHER. In the modern versions, BOTHare called His parents which blur the distinction of Christ as Son of God!  I.e. ESV, NIV & New American Standard Version:  His parents did not know it .

  1. Jesus was a model of obedience and discretion, therefore Joseph and His mother Mary were taken by surprise He did not follow the company back to Nazareth. Jesus was ALWAYS obedient to them, but now a higher obedience was required. It was an isolated instance of His Father’s desire to expose His only Begotten Son before the Temple elders and doctors. Though Jesus was an obedient child to Joseph and Mary, the time would come when He must obey the Higher Law of His Father. I am disgusted at clergy who advise their charges to obey the secular law when that law contradicts the Higher Law of God.

  1. Joseph and Mary were accustomed to the ordinary expectation Jesus would follow them. They were wrong. When religious liturgy of practice becomes too ordinary, we may become complacent in its observance. We may have studied so very industriously for many years from God’s Holy Word, and then decide, “Ah, I have studied enough. I can take a sabbatical from studying the Daily Bread of Life. But now, you are in danger of being separated from Christ. Is it worth the risk?

  1. Joseph and Mary sought for Christ among their kinfolk and acquaintances. Need I remind you that no kinfolk, no acquaintance, nor even any ministers, bear any monopoly on Christ. We gain no spiritual favor with God owing to our faith of our family. No one can “bring Christ to us.” We must find Him ourselves. We can show the Chart and Compass to our friends, but they must take the tools in hand to seek His face personally.

  1. Christ has an engaging manner of teaching. He hears our inquiries and claims, and then He asks us questions that none other can conceive to ask. He is an excellent listener, and His inquiries fathom the depths of the heart of men and women.

  1. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple. There were courageous and loving women who also sought Christ after three days, and found Him in the Temple of His Resurrected Body. If we earnestly seek Him, we shall find Him.

  1. All men were forever astonished at the words of Christ – even His mortal enemies. How often did He put the Pharisees, rulers, and Scribes to shame with His excellent and deliberative teaching.

  1. It may be Mary’s memory of the great Angel Gabriel’s counsel to her while she was yet a virgin may have lost some of its meaning and luster in her memory. She refers to Joseph as His father even though she knows full well that he is not, or perhaps she merely did so to appease social pressures. She was most often absent during the teaching and preaching of Christ. It may be that Mary did not come to full realization of who her Son was until after the resurrection.

  1. Mary feels offended by the presumed one-time failure of Jesus to obediently follow them. One thing Mary did that was right when she learned of her separation from Jesus – she sought Him sorrowing. Every soul that finds itself separated from Jesus must seek Him, not in the pride of familiarity, but sorrowing.

  1. One great reason that we need Christ, not only as redeemer and Savior, is that we do not know God the Father well. He does! 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. The reason for Jesus’ lingering behind in the Temple was as clear as the Sun to Jesus, but Mary and Jesus could not have discerned the cause. They failed to understand His explanation, but our failure to understand all that Christ has spoken to us is no reason to reject His saving invitation.

  1. Though He would become the Savior of His people and the Light of the World, Jesus was an obedient Son and remained subject to His mother and to Joseph. I pray that young people today would be subject to their parents even if their parents are only a carpenter and a keeper at home! Even if the child aspires to some high calling, he should never exalt himself above his parents. If Jesus was subject to Joseph and His Mother, how much more should we be? 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.There was something mysterious about this occasion to Mary. She did not fully understand, nonetheless, she kept all in her heart.

  1. Jesus continued to grow. When we cease to grow and learn, then we cease to live. His wisdom, too, increased with his physical stature, and He grew in favor and knowledge of God His Father. If we take our eyes off Christ, we may lose Him or be separated from Him for a time. Better to be staid on Christ constantly, than to be constantly returning from our human endeavors to seek Him out anew.

Conclusion

This incident in Christ’s points to our own responsibilities; moreover, our DUTY, in coming of age, to come to Christ! Twelve years old is a traditional and fitting age for a young person to be confirmed into the Church and to begin to grow more vibrantly into greater stature and wisdom. It represents the midline of youth when a fork in the road begins to appear in the distance – a fork which will begin to lead him more directly to the government of God in his life or, au contraire, further away if the wrong path is chosen.  Jesus dutifully was brought to the Temple on the eighth day following His birth to be circumcised (a custom that parallels baptism in the New Testament economy). And when of a knowing age (twelve years) He again comes to the Temple to be examined by the doctors thereof. This is fairly consistent with the Church practice of Confirmation at a knowing age.

If we continue faithfully and prayerfully in following after Christ, we shall not lose Him.

Sermon – Bishop Jack Arnold

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together because as is always the case there is a unifying message in the Scripture for this Sunday.   Bp Jack’s sermon can be viewed on video HERE -> https://youtu.be/EXjeR_B8e7Q

Good morning! I hope you are all doing well. In today’s sermon we will be looking at the unifying message of the Collect, Epistle and Gospel and examine how they share a common message as we look at the arrival of the Wise Men for Epiphany.  Let us start by reading today’s collect:

The First Sunday after The Epiphany.

The Collect.

O

LORD, we beseech thee mercifully to receive the prayers of thy people who call upon thee; and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Consider these words from the Collect:

…grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil the same…

As imperfect creatures with free will, we will never figure out what we should be doing, let alone do it, on our own.  We are confused beings who get into trouble left to our own devices. Without an external source of help, we will never be able to follow God on our own.  God sent the Holy Ghost that we might listen to Him and understand. He will give us the ability to figure out and know what and how we are to do the things we need to do here on Earth for Him.

We need to not just understand The Word spoken to us through Jesus and the Scriptures, but to understand what we should do; hence the prayer to figure out what we need to do, then give us the power or strength to do what we are supposed to do.  The Holy Spirit will give us the guidance we need to perform actions for Him. We just have to open our hearts and be ready to listen and act upon His Guidance.

To live the Word requires action and self-improvement each and every day of our lives. It also requires that we listen to His Guidance and then act upon His Guidance. This is a constant struggle that will be continuous for the rest of our earthly lives.  We need to ask ourselves at the end of each day, what did I do to act for God and what I did right today and what did I not do right? And figure out with the help of the Holy Ghost how to correct our wrongs and go on to the next day and do our best to do better.

I would say that self improvement and action are the chief mechanisms of the Christian Faith. Part of the self-improvement process is recognizing the signs we are in trouble and immediately consult Him and His Word and figure out an action plan according to the principles in Scripture. If you recognize you are in trouble you are part of the way there, then all you need to do is to reach out to Him in prayer and figure out what you need to do to get out of trouble. God will give you perfect advice, all you have to do is listen to Him and then act upon what he tells you to do. It only works if you act on what He tells you do, if you just listen and ignore His advice, you will never get better. So we must listen and ACT upon what He says we should do.

This is a continuous process that will occur for the rest of our earthly lives.  Jesus set the ultimate example for us in action, by His Death and Resurrection. His Ministry revolved around action and helping others. We must do the best to do likewise and act. It is by our actions that our faith in Him is shown to others. I would say that faith without action is not a true faith at all but a false one. We must avoid this by doing actions for Him. The Holy Spirit will help us in this, we just have to listen and then act upon His Guidance.

What we need to do next is we need to turn ourselves outward.  Not be self-centered, but we must think of God and our fellow Christians. We are naturally self centered beings so this is difficult for us to do, but we must get it done all the same. We must turn ourselves away from looking to ourselves and look towards others and how we can help and encourage them. In order to accomplish the Great Commission, we have to work with our other fellow Christians as a team. Notice there is no I in team. We have to let go of our egos and embrace the Holy Spirit as we work with our fellow Christians to follow His Teachings and spread His Word through ought the globe.

“There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit.”

Paul tells us not to concentrate on our status, position or grandeur, but to see what we can do to help.  Just like our body would not function if all parts were brains, neither will Christ’s Team function if everyone is concerned about their position.

When we look at the Gospel today, aside from the historical function telling us that Jesus was in the temple bringing the light of the gospel to the rabbis, there are other lessons.  We do not want to micromanage your life, but it is a good idea keep your friends and family informed of what you are doing and where you are going.   Jesus’ earthly parents risked life and limb going back up the road to Jerusalem at night.  But, that was their duty as parents.  A duty must be done, no matter the cost. The lesson here is to keep your family and friends well informed of what you are doing, rather than going off on your own, figuring you can handle it.

Duty means to do what you are supposed to do, then count the cost.  There is no sense of duty if you are merely doing what is easiest for you at the time.  While doing your duty will in the end be the right thing, thus the easiest thing, it may not seem so at the time.  Doing one’s duty can result in one’s temporal death, the end of their time here on earth.  Not an easy way on the surface.  But, recall that what seems like that easy downhill path leads to The Pit, it does not lead to the summit.  Our country is where it is today because of those who preceded us, those who did their duty.  It will not keep going up if, as a country, we stroll down that wide smooth downhill boulevard.  We must struggle to stay on the narrow path, which leads to the summit.

Look back at those who stepped forward when the country called, Concord, Veracruz, Gettysburg, San Juan Hill, Chateau Thierry, Pearl Harbor, Normandy, Peleliu, Bastogne, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Chosin Reservoir, Ia Drang Valley, Khe Sanh, Hanoi, Laos, Cambodia, Basra, Kabul, Bagdad and countless unfamiliar and unpronounceable names in Southwest Asia.  In them, you find a unifying theme of Duty, doing what you have to do, no matter what it takes, then count the cost.  Those who fought for our country did it out of duty to their country and God and to protect their family. We must emulate their purpose and serve God dutifully. Christ is the ultimate example of this, the only begotten Son of God, yet doing His duty to die for us, which is what God needed Him to do, to save us from eternal hellfire.  So, it was His Duty and He did it with honor.

Through duty, we too might have a noble death and welcoming in heaven.  We must do our duty to God, to Honor, to Country and Family.  Sometimes we will fall short, for we are imperfect creatures with that darn free will.  Thus, at times we choose the wrong path or our strength falls short or we just cannot do what is needed of us.  Then, we need to reset and restart towards the goal God has set for us.

But, back to the Gospel and the parents’ arrival at the temple, where lo, they found him.  He was among the learned men “both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.”  His parents were amazed and confounded.  He asked them why they worried and why they did not understand that he was about his Father’s business[3].  It is noteworthy to see Jesus at twelve was able to “hold his own” with the learned scholars of Judah.  He was able to out reason those who lived to dissect the Law.  “A little child shall lead them,” (Isaiah 11:1-10)

He comes!

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

¶ This Collect is to be said daily throughout the Octave

I

 BESEECH you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

In Paul’s letter to the Romans we find an interesting charge being made to the Gentile readers of his text. He gives them the challenge of presenting themselves as a living sacrifice to God.

Notice the very real difference. Animal sacrifices were offered freshly slaughtered. The life of the animal was taken to offer parts of the animal to the gods.

In the case of the Hebrew people, the best or choice meats were offered to God as a burnt sacrifice. {Left-overs went to the priests and their families as a payment for the work of the priestly craft.} We see Paul’s challenge in a plea, “I beseech you”, to the newly converted Gentile readers, present their bodies as a living sacrifice.

Why? Because it is ‘your reasonable service’.   It is what you are supposed to do.

Notice Paul uses the phrase “living sacrifice”, meaning they were to live their lives as a sacrifice, not by dying, but by living faithfully unto the Lord. It is interesting when you see the examples that many of the writers of the New Testament use, it was easily related to day to day life.  These early Christians knew what it was like to live in a world of danger, darkness, fear, chaos,(oddly not too dissimilar to today’s world).  So Paul isn’t writing a complicated message, he is using everyday events and activities to illustrate the Christian life. This “living sacrifice” would be an example to the unconverted, both Hebrew and Gentile, a representation of a godly life.   In a sense, another revelation or epiphany to those who were perishing.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

The next verse can’t be any clearer in meaning. Do not conform your life to the world. Do not act, speak, live like the world does. Instead Paul writes that we are to be transformed, changed, renewed, turn 180 degrees away from the world, by renewing the mind.

This is to prove to you that you are God’s own. We struggle in this ‘post-modern’ world with the concept we need to change the Church to fit in with the world.    Why ?

The world is a horrible mess, no clear center of meaning or purpose; only chaos, corruption, strife and evil. So why should we change to that mess?

Instead as Paul wrote, we need to change our ways, we need to be conforming to what God wants us to do, not what the world wants us to do.  This is the main reason the modern church is failing the world.  It is so ‘hell-bent’ on changing so as to not hurt or trigger anyone, when we know that the Word and the Cross are a stumbling block to the unsaved.

The world has nothing to offer mankind as far as peace, security, eternal life, or salvation.

“…I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no man comes to the Father but by me…”.  Christ Jesus spoke that truth. Contrary to what the world says and even some religious leaders say, Jesus is the ONLY WAY.        Why did He say it if it wasn’t true?

3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Now Paul addresses another issue, no less important, as far as the life of the church is concerned.

The concept of service, use of one’s talent(s), in the furtherance of the Kingdom of God.  Paul’s warning is to us is: Do not put yourself above others in the family of God.

Do not think because you have a more important position or duty, that you are ‘better’ than just an ordinary person in the pew.

Think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

We are reading about talents and abilities. When one has the talent for numbers, or the skill with tools or research, these are God given.

These are gifts that one should ‘mine’ in the most ambitious way, allowing for all the talents that God has given one, an outlet and  a way to glorify the Lord.

We can do so much with what we are given, add some training, acquire some experience, and next thing you know you are doing great things for the Lord.

4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

The next two verses (4 & 5 ) here speak to this division of labor and yet a central purpose to a believer’s life.

There is a reason to bring our talents to the altar to ‘ …present ourselves a living sacrifice...’

In these verses we find a division of labor/talents/skills and yet also a unity of purpose. We need to search our own lives periodically to see that we are using our God given talents to the honor and glory of God and to the furtherance of His Kingdom. It is so important to us both spiritually and emotionally to know that we are a part of the whole; that we are a part of the family of God.

Just recently an illustration was shared about a visiting pastor trying to get a family to come to church. He travels to the family home, is invited to sit by the fire place and enjoy a cup of tea. As the niceties of the day are shared the pastor took a fire place poker and carefully pulled a glowing ember from the crackling fire out onto the hearth. Within a few minutes the glowing ember began to get grey and grow cold. It eventually went out. The head of the house hold noticed the ember and told the pastor he and the family would be at church the next Sunday.

As believers we are meant to be together. We are meant to edify and help each other all to the purpose of praising God our creator. We are the family of God. As we gather at the holy supper today let us remember we are all members of God’s family. Let us remember each other in prayer, let us work together to see that the Gospel is preached and live in our everyday lives.

To God be the glory.

Let us pray:

O

 ALMIGHTY Lord, and everlasting God, vouchsafe, we beseech thee, to direct, sanctify, and govern, both our hearts and bodies, in the ways of thy laws, and in the works of thy commandments; that, through thy most mighty protection, both here and ever, we may be preserved in body and soul; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Amen

O

 GOD, who by the leading of a star didst manifest thy only-begotten Son to the Gentiles; Mercifully grant that we, who know thee now by faith, may after this life have the fruition of thy glorious Godhead; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

T

HE LORD bless us, and keep us. The LORD make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The LORD lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and evermore.  Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

First Sunday after Epiphany

N

OW when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.  (Matthew 2:1-12)

Matthew relates the story of the wise men who came to worship at the feet of the Christ child. The Greek name for a wise man is magos from which we derive our words magic and magician. It is a name which has been used by biblical writers to describe the pagan practitioners of astrology, sorcery and soothsaying.

The wise men (magi) in our lesson, had discovered a special star. As a result of their research about this new celestial object, they found that it heralded the birth of the King of the Jews. But simple research was not enough to satisfy their souls for the Holy Spirit had inspired them to seek him out. So they left their homeland in the east and journeyed westward to Judea that they might find this child and worship him. Given what we know about these men, it is highly likely that they may have possessed some knowledge of the Pentateuch particularly the prophecy of Balaam who was given of God to speak of the Star out of Jacob (Numbers 24:17). For it was by this single event that God directed the path of the magi, first to King Herod in Jerusalem, and then on to Bethlehem where they worshiped our Lord and presented him the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Their testimony and their actions clearly mark them as believers for as the Rev. Matthew Henry once wrote: ‘All that have found Christ fall down before him and submit themselves to him.’

Some have questioned the decision of the wise men to approach King Herod about the birth and the location of the Christ child. All things being equal, it might appear to be a fair criticism of the wise men. Why go before the established ruler of Judea and state unequivocally that you are searching for another king? However unwise such an action might appear to be, what the critics fail to understand is that their announcement of the Messiah’s birth to King Herod was part of God’s plan and purpose. If God had not wanted them to go there, an angel would have redirected them just as they were warned to take another way home from Bethlehem. God wanted King Herod to know via these special messengers that the Messiah had come. Herod called his advisors and questioned them about the birth place of the promised Messiah. The wise men did not know about Bethlehem until Herod’s priests and scribes told him and he passed the information on to the wise men. Then Herod sent them away with the deceitful command of, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also (Matthew 2:8). King Herod had spent much of his life garnering power for himself at the expense of all around him. He had long before purposed in his heart he alone was king of the Jews apart from any support or affirmation of Israel’s God. His folly was thus made manifest by God’s divine message that for all his efforts, he was but an interloper, a usurper, a fraud, a wicked man devoid of divine understanding whose life would soon end in agonizing torment. God had put him on notice that his reign was about to be terminated and that the true king of the Jews had now come.

Also, there is a grave warning in Matthew for all who would place themselves outside of God’s commandments as they will face his divine justice which will contain not one iota of mercy or staying of his hand. God has called all people to obedience, and Herod was hardly a humble ruler seeking God’s will for if he had been, he too would have gone to Bethlehem and groveled at the foot of that rude manger recognizing that the true king had come. The masses of satanically inspired humanity will not bow their knees before the King until the Judgment when every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:10-11). We know the wise men were again directed by the star to the very place where the Christ child lay, and that once there they worshiped him and gave him gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh. Their names were not given to us in Scripture, and only centuries later were they numbered and named. Suffice to say that God knows them and that ought to be good enough for us. Nevertheless, Christians in the centuries following the foundation of the Church created their own mythology concerning the wise men from the East. God intentionally left out certain details, and divine reticence ought to be respected in every case. We Christians are supposed to accept God’s word on faith— believing simply because it is his word and his word is truth (John 17:17). Many times the profane histories of mankind have verified bible truths though not on account of the what the Bible said. And in any case where Scripture says one thing and man’s secular record says something different, we ought defer to the Scriptures.

In closing, I offer you five questions for your edification and enlightenment:

  1. Are you truly searching for Christ much as those wise men of old had done?
  2. Do you humbly worship our Lord and pray the prayers of our liturgy from the heart, rather than simply saying them?
  3. Do you truly and earnestly love the Lord by keeping his word and commandments?
  4. Are you willing to serve him by using the spiritual gifts which God has given you in his service?
  5. Have you established a prayer time each day to reach out to God and lay before him your sins, your thanksgivings and your concerns?

As God called the magi to come and worship the Christ child, he also calls all humanity to come and do likewise, but with one difference. We worship not a child in a manger, but him who sits at the right hand of the Father and who is King of kings and Lord of lords. The magi worshiped him for what he was born to become, while we worship him as he is and what he will always be. For we have obtained everlasting salvation in his name and through his blood. So let us emulate King David when he said, I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the LORD for there we will be received with joy by him who has given us the gift of eternal life (Psalm 122:1). Therefore in the words the hymn O Come all ye faithful we ought to, Come let us adore him, Christ our Lord.

Let us Pray,

F

ATHER, as we remember with joy the coming of the wise men who announced that the King of Glory had come into the world; strengthen also our witness in bearing the good news of Jesus Christ to others around us, that they too may hear and believe on him as their Saviour and Lord. And we ask this in his most precious name. Amen.

Have a blessed week,

Bryan+

Bishop Dennis Campbell’s Sermon

Bishop Dennis is a brilliant speaker.  He is able to take biblical precepts and make them perfectly understandable, even to me.  When he provides the text of his sermons I take the utmost pleasure in passing them on.

First Sunday after Epiphany

Matthew 2:1-12

The Wise Men, the Star, and the King

Yesterday, we began the Epiphany season, starting with the commemoration of the visit of the wise men, who made a long and perilous journey from Babylon to Bethlehem to see and worship the King of the Jews.  To us, Epiphany is a season, not just a day.  And that is fitting for such an important event, though, I think, for most people, including pastors and theologians, Epiphany passes unnoticed.  Fortunately, our calendar of Scripture readings and seasons, brings us back to Epiphany every year.  Thus, we come today to read about the wise men who came seeking Christ.

The arrival of the wise men probably puzzled Mary and Joseph.  These men were pagans and Gentiles, what did they know about the Messiah?  Why did they even care?  Even worse, they were from the east, the land of Syria, Babylon, and other ancient enemies of the Jewish people.  They were not from Africa, Asia, and Europe, as presented in so many creche scenes today.  They probably learned about the Messiah from Jews who were taken to their land as prisoners after the devastating conquest of Israel by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.  Thousands of Jews died in that massacre.  That was nearly six hundred years before Christ, but the memory of it still burned in the collective mind of the Jewish people.

Much as I like John Henry Hopkins’ carol, We Three Kings, the wise men were not kings. They were scholars and keepers of the histories and mythologies of their people.  They were probably priests.  They were the forerunners of science and medicine, which they also practiced.  They were respected and influential people in their own country.   They were also star watchers, who developed the signs of the Zodiac as a means of tracking the annual cycle of the earth’s seasons.   They knew, when Capricorn was in a particular place in the night sky, the winter solstice was near.

They also believed the stars and planets foretell and affect events on earth.  When they saw the star of Bethlehem, they knew the King of the Jews had been born.  The fact that a star announced His birth meant He was much more important than an ordinary king, and they resolved to go to Jerusalem to see Him and pay Him homage.

Why did the wise men think the star announced the birth of the King of the Jews?  Probably because the Jews who were settled in Babylon as a result of their conquest, looked forward to a deliverer-king based on Numbers 24:17-19.  You may remember in Numbers, the king of Moab had asked the prophet Baalam to curse Israel so it would be unable to conquer Moab on its way to possess the Promised Land of Canaan.  Balaam refused, being warned by God not to curse Israel.  The king of Moab was furious with Balaam, but instead of executing him, told the prophet to return to his own place and people.  But before leaving, Balaam was overcome by a vision in which he was given these words, I shall see him, but not now:  I shall behold him, but not nigh” there shall come a star out of Jacob, and a Scepter shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.  And Edom shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly.  Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth (Numbers 24:17-19).

Those words, in their original context, refer to Israel’s conflict with Moab, and eventual conquest of much of the area around the Jordan River Valley. But the vision looks far beyond that, far beyond the geographic and national identity of Israel, to a King far greater than any mere man. The Jewish people always looked to these words in times of trouble and oppression by foreign nations.  Thus, when forced from their land and transplanted by the rivers of Babylon, and while their land was once again occupied and ruled by Gentiles, they looked back to this promise, and hoped they would, one day return and be blessed in the land of Israel.  They looked for the star to come again out of Jacob, another deliverer, like Moses, Joshua, and the judges like Deborah and Samson to lead them to victory and peace in their homeland again.  They looked for the Messiah, the Star out of Jacob.  The wise men, seeing the star knew it was the sign that the Scepter was rising in Israel.

The star itself has been the subject of much interest.  Many have tried to equate it with conjunctions of planets or planets and stars that occurred around 4-2 BC.], which is the approximate time Jesus was born.  I don’t believe the star was a natural phenomena, fitting as it would be for nature itself to announce the birth of the Lord.  I say that because Matthew says the star “went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.”  When the wise men “saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.”  The star seems to have disappeared during the wise men’s journey from the east.  It reappeared when they left Herod’s palace, and “went before them, till it it came and stood over where the young child was” (Mt. 2:9).  This makes me believe it was a supernatural star, a special sign to the wise men, to bring them to Bethlehem.

In the days of the wise men, the journey from Babylon to Bethlehem would take years.  They would not go directly west, for that would take them across a thousand miles of dangerous, waterless desert, and they would probably not have survived such a journey. Instead, they would follow the Euphrates River in a northwesterly direction, where water abounds and settlements and cities provide shelter and provisions to continue their pilgrimage.  This is the route Abraham took when he left Ur of the  Chaldees for the land which God would show him. At the northern end of the Euphrates, they would turn southwest, following the Jordan River Valley, turning west at Jericho and following the Jericho road into Jerusalem.  It would be a trip of about 2,000 miles.  How many miles can a camel go in a day?  I don’t know, but St. Matthew says Herod decreed the death of all the children two years old and under “in Bethlehem and all the coasts thereof” (Mt 2:16), so we may surmise the wise men traveled for two years there and two years back.

Why Jerusalem?  Why did the wise men stop in Jerusalem?  Because Jerusalem was the capitol of Judea.  It was where David had his palace. It was where Solomon, and the kings of Judah had their thrones, and governments, and military headquarters, and horses and chariots and soldiers and weapons.  It was the site of the Temple, the spiritual capitol of Israel and the symbol of the Throne of God.  Where would the new king be born but in Jerusalem?  Where would he live but in the palace of the king?  The wise men naturally expected to find Him there, wrapped in splendor and comfort, surrounded with servants and wealth.  Instead, they found him in a  humble house, away from the homes of the well-to-do, the son of  a working man who dressed in work clothes.  Perhaps Joseph had been able to sell property in Nazareth and raise enough money to start a carpentry shop in Bethlehem.  Or, maybe he was a hired hand, a day laborer, like the men in the parable of the householder in Matthew 20.  Either way, His situation must have been a surprise to the wealthy, cultured wise men.  Had it not been for the star, they might have returned to Babylon without seeing Jesus.

I suppose their appearance was a surprise to Mary and Joseph, too, and to every one in the neighbourhood.  A caravan of wealthy men, with servants and rich clothing, stopping to visit a two year old boy in a working class family would gain the attention of people from the entire town.  I can imagine children running along beside the camels, begging for money or food.  I can imagine people running ahead to find a place with a better view of the caravan, and people talking; “what is happening?  Who are these people?  What are they doing here?”

Interesting as these things may be, why do we read about their visit and their gifts today?  Because their visit is one of the most significant events in human history.  It is the beginning of the breaking down of the wall of partition that divides the Jews from the Gentiles.  It shows Gentiles worshiping Christ.  Even more importantly, it shows God accepting their worship, just as He accepted the worship of the most pious and Godly Jews.  No longer will the people of God be defined by ethnicity, or locality, or the Temple.  God’s people will worship Him in Spirit and in truth in Jerusalem, and Samaria, and in the uttermost parts of the earth, through the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  The key to the Kingdom is this young child, born King of the Jews, whose birth, as the angels said, is the tiding of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For it is not just the King of the Jews who was born, it was the Saviour of the world.

Glory be to the Father, and the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.  Amen

Extra from Bishop Dennis

Today Bishop Denis unearthed some very interesting information I am confident you will benefit from:

The earth has completed another orbit around the sun, and is now at the place we use to mark the end of one year and the beginning of another.  I pray this next revolution will bring God’s blessings to you with all good things, especially Godliness, truth, faith, and peace.

As we begin 2024, people are forming plans to make things better than they were in 2023, at least the things over which they have some control.  In December 1722, a young man was making similar plans; not about losing weight or giving up bad habits, for, important as such things obviously are, his plans were about higher things.  He called his plans, “Resolutions.” I hope to share some of them with you over the next few weeks.

At the time of writing, the man, just out of Yale, and only nineteen years of age, was preparing for the ministry at the home of his father, the Reverend Timothy Edwards, in Windsor  Connecticut.  His exceptionally high intellectual gifts, combined with his obvious piety and devotion to study and duty, made him a skilled expositor of the Scriptures and a useful servant of God and His Church.  He would go on to become a famous preacher, who, with others, like the Wesley brothers and George Whitfield, were greatly used in the First Great Awakening in America (c.a. 1730-1740).  His name was Jonathan Edwards.  His preface and first Resolution, given below, are from the first volume of the Works of Jonathan Edwards, Banner of Truth Trust, 1974 edition.

RESOLUTIONS

Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God’s help, I do humbly entreat Him, by His grace, to enable me to keep these Resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to His will, for Christ’s sake.”

1.Resolved, That I will do whatsoever I think to be most for the glory of God, and my own good, profit, and pleasure, in the whole of my duration; without any consideration of the time, whether now, or never so many myriads of ages hence.  Resolved, to do whatever I think to be my duty, and most for the good and advantage of mankind in general.  Resolved, so to do, whatever difficulties I meet with, how many soever, and how great soever.

The Reverend Mr. Jonathan Edwards is almost unknown today.  In his own time, he was well known throughout the colonies, and his fame continued long enough to have his sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” read in American public schools into the 1970s. His Master of Arts from Yale was the highest level of academic achievement in the land, and was accomplished at a time when knowledge and scholarship were highly valued, especially when combined with personal wisdom and kindness.

Reverend Edwards’ “Resolutions” reveal an understanding of sin as an existential human struggle, common to all people.  They also express the deep faith of a man who realizes the immensity of the love that went to the cross to redeem sinners.  It is easy to picture him at the evening fireside in late December, discussing his calling with his pastor father and pious mother.  Rather than the  shortcomings of the Church, the conversation would focus on his preparation for the frightening task of preaching the Word and being faithful to God and the Church.  It was in this setting his “Resolutions” were written. Today we will look at Jonathan Edwards’  second and third Resolutions.

  1. Resolved, To be continually endeavoring to find out some new contrivance and invention to promote the  forementioned things.

  1. Resolved, If I ever shall fall and grow dull, so as to neglect to keep any part of these Resolutions, to repent of all I can remember, when I come to myself again.

Reverend Edwards’ Resolution 4 sounds very much like St. Paul’s encouragement to abstain from even the appearance of evil.  Number 5 sounds like Paul’s admonition to redeem the time.  Clearly the good Reverend knew the Bible, and intended to live by it.

  1. Resolved, Never to do any manner of thing, whether in soul or body, less or more, but what tends to the glory of God, nor be, nor suffer it, if I can possible avoid it.

  1. Resolved, never to lose one moment of time, but to improve it in the most profitable way I possibly can.

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Columbiq

I am writing to request your prayers for Colombia, my country. At this moment frightful things are happening, a great diabolical shadow is cast over this nation.

  1. The Constitutional Court in a tyrannical way has decriminalized the crime of abortion in Colombia, even up to six months. This is an illegitimate process, the court is legislating, something that is not within the competence of the judges, on the other hand the issue of abortion was a cause judged in 2006, which is why it should not be judged again in 2022. But socialist groups, international elites, social engineers and feminist groups have not given up on the issue. They want to traffic in death.

  1. The candidate of the extreme left Gustavo Petro is close to become the president of Colombia, this is a man who in his youth was a guerrilla criminal, a vile and despicable man who has always served the interests of drug trafficking, he was an advisor to Chavez who implanted Communism in Venezuela, his second home is Communist Cuba.

  1. The same court approved the movement of Gustavo Petro called: la Colombia Humana, it gave him the status of a political party, with this, he has the possibility of getting to introduce at least 15 congressmen, basically he is close to kidnapping all the powers, he already has the judicial power in his pocket, he only lacks the executive and the legislative. We are close to the precipice, we trust in a miracle of God.

We hope you support us with your prayers, I will ask the brothers to pray unceasingly so that in his mercy we will be saved from these perverse men. God bless you and keep you in all things.

Your servant in Christ,

Bishop José Antonio Rios

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

[1] Note also the tremendous advantage God has over the Devil.  Not only did God make both man and the Devil, but He has actually been a man, the Devil only read about men and thought about men and contemplated men. In Jesus, God has been a man.  Note – in this instance, He learned about the compassion, worry and duty of parents towards their Son!  The Devil, not so much.

[4] Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells.  While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.  The most common cause of death related to multiple myeloma is infection, with pneumonia being the most common fatal infection. Other common causes of death are bleeding (from low platelet counts), complications of bone fractures, kidney failure, and blood clots in the lungs.
