Fifth Sunday in Lent Commonly called Passion Sunday

Sunday Report

Today was the Fifth Sunday in Lent.[1]

Passion Sunday

Passion Sunday is the fifth Sunday in Lent, and the first Sunday in Passiontide, the last two weeks of Lent, beginning on Passion Sunday and ending on Holy Saturday (the Saturday before Easter).

All crosses, pictures, images are covered with opaque purple veils and Gloria Patri is often omitted during this period. Passion Sunday is so-called because in the gospel for that day (John 8:46-59) Jesus begins his sufferings by being stoned out of the temple.  Under the old calendar, Passion Sunday was also known as Judica Sunday, after that day’s Introit: Judica me, Deus (Judge me, O Lord) from Psalm 42 (43), and was called Black Sunday in Germany. This alternate name originates from the fact that after Passion Sunday, the Judica Psalm was not said again until Easter; the German title comes from the old practice of veiling the crosses and statues in the church on that day.

The Roman Catholic Church has completely suppressed Passiontide and eliminated Palm Sunday during the course of abandoning much of the Christian history and doctrine.  They now refer to Palm Sunday as Passion Sunday.  Traditional catholics[2] still observe Passiontide as well as its rites and ceremonies.  Passiontide is observed in the Anglican Communion.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 132-133, with the Collect first:

Amen.

¶ This Collect is to be said every day in Lent, after the Collect appointed for the day, until Palm Sunday.

The Epistle for today came from Paul’s letter to the Hebrews, the Ninth Chapter, beginning at the Eleventh Verse.   Paul summarizes both the symbolism and the substance of the Lord’s sacrifice on our behalf.  Paul opens the secret of the One Perfect Sacrifice, One Time, for All Time and All Mankind.  Paul is clearly appealing to the sense of the Jews when he asks them if the blood of goats will set aside or atone for sin, how much more can be done by the Perfect Sacrifice made on our behalf?

C

HRIST being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

This morning’s Gospel came from the Gospel of Saint John, the Eighth Chapter, beginning at the Forty-Sixth Verse and tells the story of Jesus’ confrontation with the Pharisees in the temple.  Like much of John it is filled with deep explanation of Jesus and His purpose here.

Knowing them looking to find the worst in Him, Jesus asked, Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?  In a point central to Christianity, he went on, He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.  When we hear the term Jews here, we should hear the world in general, for He spoke to all who would not hear.  When they would not hear, He pointed out He sought not glory or praise from them, but only from the Father whom in reality they knew not.  Here He offers the singular benefit of Christianity, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.  This concept being foreign to them, they asked if He thought He was greater than Abraham.  That brought the crowning touch, Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day.  Knowing He was only in his early 30s, they could not grasp how he could have seen Abraham.

In a demonstration of the non-linearity of God’s time, He said, Before Abraham was, I am.[3]  As might be expected, this offended the Keepers of The Law.

J

ESUS said, Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? He that is of God heareth God’s words:  ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me. And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth. Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death. Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself? Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you; but I know him, and keep his saying. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.

T

HEN began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. 10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. 11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. 12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. 13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. 14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them? 16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. 17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? 18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.  (Luke 20:9-18)[4]

The Bride of Christ (the Church) is a ‘Garden Enclosed’ (see SS 4:12). Jesus will describe, in a parable, the nature of that Garden, or Vineyard, and how God the Father views that Garden as a dearly held possession.

When I view the mostly apostate church of our own era, I wonder how God would view that church. Perhaps in the same way He viewed the apostate church of the Old Testament represented by the scribes, Pharisees, and Jewish rulers – with utter disdain. The Church is an institution intended to change God’s chosen vessels from the worldly to the Godly, and to change the world as the salt that provides a healing balm and a preserving property for the weary world. It is NOT an institution of social experimentation that is changed BY the world. Instead of influencing the world for better, the church has accepted the values of the world and discarded the righteousness of God.

On the eastern outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, there is a large, solid stone mountain called, appropriately, Stone Mountain. The large stone dome of the mountain stands 825 feet above surrounding terrain and contains the largest bas relief artwork in the world – a monument to the Confederate President, Jefferson Davis, and generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. I have a 1925 memorial coin (half dollar) in my possession that depicts the Mountain with Lee and Jackson on shown of the bas relief. The artwork is by John Gutzon Borglum – the same artist who sculpted Mount Rushmore.

From the days of my childhood, that mountain has remained unchanged and unmoved in appearance. The large dome of granite and quartz is a reminder of the unchanging nature of that Great Rock upon which the Church is founded – our Lord Jesus Christ. He not only has remained unchanged in every whit from the time of my youth, but from the eternity past before which the worlds were made out of the void expanse. On that Great Rock, we see the image of Christ – His cross and the open tomb – stand out in particular relief to His unchanging nature and the security made available through His Passion.

M

OREOVER, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. (1 Corinthians 10:1-4)

Though the worldly church attempts to assume the image of Daniel’s ‘great image’ of worldly power and prestige (Daniel 2:31-32), God will not brook such apostacy in His Church. The Word and Person of Christ will, as a great Stone, smash that worldly image to smithereens. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. (Daniel 2:34) Christ, being our Foundation, strikes at the very feet and foundation of that worldly system and church.

Our Lord Jesus Christ addressed the multitudes, and often, the Jewish scholars, in simple and pointed parables from which truth and promise could be discerned by the earnest listener, and concealed to the supercilious scholars who maintained a pretended righteousness that was both wrong and hypocritical. The concealment of meaning was not an intention by God, but a demonstration of how the carnal mind is blind to truth.

The Vineyard referenced in the parable is the Holy Church purchased by the sacrifice of our Lord at Calvary. This Church is not to be confused with the worldly church full of briars, false professors, and serpents; but the Church that bears true fruit of the Spirit and adheres strictly to the Word above every other consideration.

Looking at the parable in detail, we understand the ‘certain man’ is God the Father. The vineyard is much like that Garden eastward in Eden from which the Lord God departed from the close fellowship of Adam as a result of sin. The life of man became a desolate wilderness journey. But God, though far away in His righteousness, was mindful always of His Creation. The husbandmen might be compared to those who bore the organized model of the Old Testament Church. In time, it was the organized religion of the Jews that overshadowed the purpose and meaning of God. 10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. These were prophets such as Abel, Jeremiah, Isaiah, and Zechariah.

11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. 12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. God is long-suffering toward His elect. Though He owns the Vineyard by right of purchase, He deals with man in man’s feeble understanding. God sent John the Baptist to prepare the way for His only Begotten Son, and him they beheaded for righteousness’ sake.

How presumptuous and evil of those who kept the Vineyard – the Jewish religious rulers – to usurp the Owner’s property and beat, and even murder, the servants of the rightful owner! The same happens every worship service in many churches across the landscape. False religion, in clear contradiction to God’s Word, flourishes in many of our largest churches today. Every perversion is being exalted as good, and every objection to such perversions is labeled as ‘judgmental.’ The modern church has lost its role as Defender of the Faith in which the discipline of Godly rule is maintained. It is not the Vineyard that has become corrupt, but the men and women who represent the compromise and infidelity inherent thereof today.

13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.  Be not deceived – God was not taken by surprise that His only Begotten Son was cruelly treated and murdered by the Jewish rulers and their Gentil accomplices. It was all part of God’s great plan of redemption. 14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him.  The Scribes, Pharisees and Jewish rulers were not in doubt about the Sonship of Christ. They KNEW who He was, and would resort to outright murder in order to maintain their positions of authority and rule. They saw every miracle our Lord ever performed – they followed Him everywhere as a hungry lion its prey seeking how they might entrap Him even in His works of kindness and love.

In Verse 15, our Lord asks a searching question – What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them? Before asking this question, Jesus makes another prophetic point in the parable: 39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.  (Matthew 21:39)  Was not our Lord crucified without the gates of the city?

The Jewish rulers had deformed the Old Testament Church in such manner as to make it unrecognizable as the Vineyard of the Lord. They had planted thorns and thistles and uprooted the fruited vines of grape – teaching the traditions of men rather than the whole truth of God. Do we not see this starkly happening in our churches today? Even the church music is sensuous and worldly, the preaching filled with men’s thoughts and glory and devoid of the beauty of truth in God. Seldom do we hear a sermon preached as an exposition of the word but rather how a fellow’s experience on the golf course reflects some immutable truth.

The Jewish leaders literally hated this last question of Christ, but Christ continued in giving answer: 16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others.   How did the Jewish rulers respond to this dismal picture? And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. By all means they prayed God would not do so to them for they KNEW the truth of the parable indicted them in their willful sins. Jesus looks them in the eye and tells them: 17 What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? 18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.” Matthew adds an additional detail to our Lord’s response: 42 Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? 43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. 44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. (Matthew 21:42-44)

The response of the Jewish rulers is further defined by the following postscript to the parable: 19 ¶ And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. 20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. (Luke 20:19-20)

And so, with the Sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ outside the gates of the Temple at Jerusalem, the rule of the usurpers of Israel were wrenched from them and given to the legitimate caretakers – those who, from the days of Abraham, had believed and relied upon that Promise made to Abraham of a Seed to deliver them – the Church of the New Testament!

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion

Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

Consider these words from the Collect:

… thy people; … by thy great goodness … may be governed and preserved evermore, both in body and soul …

In the Collect, we acknowledge without God’s great goodness and divine intervention, we cannot be preserved in either body or soul.  This is a constant truth through ought the Bible, the New Testament in particular.  Without God’s great goodness we simply cannot be preserved. What does asking for God’s great goodness mean for us? It means when we ask we might be governed and thus preserved by His great goodness, we are in effect asking for His Guidance for us, so we can be preserved in both body and soul. We acknowledge God is the ultimate good and is the source of all truth, and we need His Help if we are to succeed. This concept is constant throughout all the collects. It is constant because it is the truth. We can only follow the narrow uphill path towards heaven with His Goodness and His Guidance.  As always, if we are left to our own devices and desires, we are lost.  Guided means we need to ask, then listen to what He Tells us, then actually follow those instructions.

For those who are not perfect[5], following instructions can be hard at times but it must be done nevertheless. For if we do not follow His Instructions, we will never make it. Fortunately for us We have His guidance through the Holy Spirit available to help us make progress on the narrow uphill trail towards heaven.

If we are looking to Him for guidance, we then need look to Him for safety.  Safety meaning only the safety of our soul, our eternal life. It does not mean safety from dangers to the body here on Earth. Our bodies are still able to be physically harmed, but our souls are safe from eternal damnation, that is what safety truly means. If we are to truly be believers and followers of Him, we will have to sometimes be in a place that puts our mortal body in danger, but as long as we believe on Him, our soul will be safe.

Our only means of being accounted as perfect when we come before God is to rely on the sacrifice and intermediary priesthood of His Son, our Savior Jesus Christ to account us as perfect before God on that final day. Christ has replaced the intermediary priesthood of the Jews with himself, our one and only High Intermediary Priest.  Your AOC ministers, while officially titled as priests, are not intermediary priests! The day of the intermediary priests have come and gone for us with the Old Testament in the past. We need only Christ, there are no middle men between us and Jesus.  He is our Savior, our Leader, our Teacher, our Master, our Example!

Christ came to succeed the Old Covenant marked by sacrifices of innocent animals; killing off animals in an effort to atone for our sins really did not do the job.  It was a way to prepare people for Christ’s coming. They would not have understood His Message otherwise without it. Christ’s death on the cross and resurrection highlighted that His Ministry was all about action. If we truly are believers of Him, we will ACT upon His Word and not just say it. There is truth to the saying that action speak louder than words.

In the Gospel, Jesus explained to the Pharisees before Abraham had even been conceived, He was. In fact, Jesus was the one who created this Earth, so He has been around since before the beginning of the planet. The Pharisees could or would not grasp in their heads Jesus was who He claimed to be, the Son of God. They chose to try to destroy His ministry rather than follow Him. Time and time again we see them confronted with the truth Jesus offers and they always choose to reject it rather than embrace the truth.

This is a very common pattern with God’s enemies. Their hearts have been blinded by their love of their selves, pride and greed. They cannot see the simple truths we see as followers of God. They look down upon us and think we are the ignorant ones, when reality is the other way around.

They cannot, or will not, see that the priceless gift Jesus came to offer us. Jesus came to save our souls and give us eternal life, eternal life starting right then.  Not just for the Jews and Israel, but the whole wide world, Jew, Gentile, Greek and all others.  Jesus brought salvation and life to the entire world.  That was not what the Pharisees were looking so hard for with their magnifying glasses as they examined Torah and The Law.  They were looking for what would be only a temporary power, power on this physical plane. This pales in comparison to safety and happiness forever, for all eternity.  Pharisees were not big picture people, and as Calvin told Hobbes, We big picture people rarely become historians or Pharisees, I might add.   The Pharisees were very obviously not big picture people; they misinterpreted the prophecies of the Messiah. Regardless, even though some people chose to misunderstand the prophecies, He came and He made that one sacrifice, at one time, for all mankind, for all time. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life[6].

Who is Jesus?  Our Savior?  Indeed.  But, more He has been since before the beginning of the world, for He is One with I Am.

Through His Actions, we are saved.

Do ye likewise:

ACT

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

Amen.

¶ This Collect is to be said every day in Lent, after the Collect appointed for the day, until Palm Sunday.

As we approach the end of Lent we can detect a note of urgency in the scripture selections for each Sunday leading up to the greatest event in Christ Jesus earthly ministry.  The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus after three years of earthly ministry.  I am not a numerologist nor do I subscribe to the following of number codes allegedly found in the Bible; but I do find it interesting how various number sequences occur and reoccur time and again in scripture.

Is the average seminary course of study three years because Jesus’ ministry was three years?

Just wondering.  But I digress. Instead let us look at the strong theme that is presented in our gospel reading as well as our epistle reading.

  1. The high priesthood of Christ. {Heb. 9:11}

  1. The once and for all sacrifice of Christ, the shedding of his blood to seal our redemption, the revelation of truth in spite of the chaos and darkness that surrounded the times of Christ. {Heb. 12-14}

The author of the letter to the Hebrews wrote about the ancient and recent history of the Hebrew peoples, who would later be called Jews by way of reference to the two surviving tribes, Judah and Benjamin. From these two tribes come the kingship and the kinship that certifies Christ Jesus both in heritage and from a spiritual sense.  Christ is called a high priest of good things to come and yet he is not of the priestly tribe, the Levites. He is from the smallest tribe, Benjamin in the lineage of king David.

B

UT Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;{expand the idea}. 12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.{eternal redemption because Christ is not of this world.  13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:  14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? {the perfect lamb of God, the ultimate Passover lamb, without spot or blemish; ie. Sinless}. 15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. {this ties up the whole package}

With the reading of the passage from Hebrews we get the historical perspective, now we look at the certificate of truth as presented by Christ Jesus himself.

In the passage from the 8th chapter of John’s gospel, Jesus is arguing with a group of learned sceptics, who are questioning every aspect of who Jesus says he is.

First, Christ calls them out for hearing the word of God but essentially not heeding the Word of God. {Christ Jesus being the LOGOS [logos], Word of God}.

They try to come back at Christ with the idea that he isn’t a Jew after all, but a half breed Samaritan and that he is possessed with a devil to boot.  Jesus retorts he honors his Father and that they are dishonoring him and the Father.  The back and forth argument continues when Jesus states the coming promise of the death of death. [When Christ comes back from the dead he conquers death].  The culmination of the heated discussion comes when the learned sceptics attack Christ on his statement Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.

Essentially they call out Jesus for being greater than the Patriarch Abraham and the prophets.  Jesus puts the nail into place when he states: Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Of course, this drives the crowd crazy, because Jesus has just declared that he and God are the same.  Remember when Moses was asking God what to tell the enslaved Hebrews in Egypt who sent him?  God tells Moses tell them I AM sent you.

So, when Jesus told these men that he was before Abraham, in fact he was I AM, they picked up rocks to stone him, because he was equating himself with God.  This was blasphemy in the eyes of those men. Since it was not God’s plan for Jesus to be stoned to death, another miracle happens. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

Jesus will later certify his divinity when he returns from the dead three days after being crucified by the Romans. He will present himself to at least five hundred witnesses, people who had seen Jesus before he was crucified, many would over the next decades certify that they indeed saw Jesus alive AFTER his crucifixion.

These are pretty heady times, all of these prophecies are now coming true, the final work of Christ on earth is soon to occur. The once and for all sacrifice for the sins of the world is about to happen, because Jesus obeyed his Father and offered himself up as that pure, sinless sacrifice, the Pascal Lamb.

Let us pray:

O

 GOD, merciful Father, who despisest not the sighing of a contrite heart, nor the desire of such as are sorrowful; Mercifully assist our prayers which we make before thee in all our troubles and adversities, whensoever they oppress us; and graciously hear us, that those evils which the craft and subtlety of the devil or man worketh against us, may, by thy good providence, be brought to nought; that we thy servants, being hurt by no persecutions, may evermore give thanks unto thee in thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

W

E humbly beseech thee, O Father, mercifully to look upon our infirmities; and, for the glory of thy Name, turn from us all those evils that we most justly have deserved; and grant, that in all our troubles we may put our whole trust and confidence in thy mercy, and evermore serve thee in holiness and pureness of living, to thy honor and glory; through our only Mediator and Advocate, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O

 GOD, whose nature and property is ever to have mercy and to forgive; Receive our humble petitions; and though we be tied and bound with the chain of our sins, yet let the pitifulness of thy great mercy loose us; for the honor of Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

T

HE Lord bless us, and keep us. The Lord make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and evermore. Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore.  Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Fifth Sunday in Lent – Commonly called Passion Sunday

In today’s gospel our Lord encouraged his  listeners to view his works as being from the Father. Still, they condemned him as one possessed of a devil and they denied his offering of salvation from death as being demon-inspired. Nevertheless, the thing which angered them most was when he said: before Abraham was I am. Those five words forced his listeners to respond in one two ways— either they would fall down and worship him as the Messiah, or they would take up stones to kill him as a blasphemer. Needless to say, they chose the latter.

But isn’t that always the case with the masses of the unregenerate of our world? Scripture is filled with accounts of just this sort of behavior. Whether it was the murder of righteous Abel; or Joseph being sold into slavery; or the constant murmuring and rebellion which Moses endured, it should not be at all surprising that Satan would enlist Christ’s earthly brethren to kill him under the rubrics of the Law of Moses— the very law he came to fulfil on their behalf.

And what say ye of our world today? I think you will agree that nothing has changed. You will still find the unregenerated working to silence all who are born again of God’s Spirit. A favorite tactic of theirs has been to call us names such as “fundamentalists”, or narrow-minded” or even “the frozen chosen”. They also have sought in recent years to restrict our right to free expression in public spaces via government edict as well as by verbal and physical violence. Christians in several places have suffered various forms of degradation and destruction of their houses of worship by those who are the Devil’s charges. The unregenerated are even using the tactics of peaceful co-existence to diminish the witness of faithful Christians. It may be by degrees, that is, “You can speak here at this time, just not at all times”,or it may come in the form of an outright prohibition , such as, “We don’t want you to proclaim this teaching or that from the Bible in public as it may be offensive to some and we will prosecute you if you do.”

Yet in spite of all their efforts, the Bible makes it rather plain that we are not to compromise, neither are we to negotiate with those who are part of this evil world system. We are further forbidden to submit to its several, sordid practices. We who are born again of the Holy Spirit are expected to properly discern good from evil and avoid the latter as a matter of faith. The Bible tells us that a daily regime of prayer and Bible reading will open the gates of heaven to us. Our Lord has promised us his assistance in every good word and work as well as to keep us from the power of the evil one. His help is always available to us, and we need only ask in faith believing that he will.

Still, we will face the Devil’s stone-throwers. While those in our Lord’s day attempted to use scripture against him, their modernist counterparts are more interested in condemning the Bible (especially the KJV) for being politically incorrect. For instance, the doctrine of original sin embarrasses them, and on that account they have sought to set aside the concept of sin, but not their sinful behaviors. So when they are confronted with a Christian’s witness which disturbs their understanding of morality and behavior, they will resort to their particular “stone pile” to combat the source of their discomfort. As St. Stephen cut to the quick the unregenerate of his day with his inspired message to them, so also are the unregenerated of our time cut to the quick by the word of God spoken to them by one of God’s own (see Acts 7:51-60 and Hebrews 4:12).

And modern day stone-throwers are a serious threat to all who have been born again in Jesus Christ. The doubter will cast stones of doubt into their congregation. The denier will cast stones of atheism and agnosticism amongst the flock. The libertine will cast stones of bodily corruption. And, in one form or another, they all will cast the stones of blasphemy and division. How in character it would be for them to take the hymn Crown Him With Many Crowns and change it to Stone Him With Many Stones for such has been done since the founding of the Church and will be so until our Lord returns.

One stone in particular, is the spirit of Jezebel as set forth in Revelation 2:20-24. In Halley’s Bible Handbook, we find the following description: “Jezebel… may have been a prominent… devotee of Diana, with a gift for leadership who had a following of influential people in the city, and who was attracted to the growing cause of Christianity, attached herself to the Church, militantly insisting… on the right to teach and practice licentious indulgence, claiming inspiration for her teaching. She was called Jezebel because, like… the devilish wife of Ahab… she was introducing the same vile practices into the Christian Church. [While not all the local pastors accepted her teaching, they nevertheless accepted her as a fellow pastor] thinking that she might be a help in winning the whole city to the name of Christ.”

Many times, the church has been seduced by those who are possessed of this same spirit of Jezebel. They come bearing an attractive message albeit not a true and godly one. The lure of greater church membership, more money and a more pleasurable experience are her principal offerings. The spirit of Jezebel is a spirit of defiance against the written word of God. It is also more ecumenical and thus serves as an access way by which the world may enter and corrupt the church. For it is these three offerings which modern Christianity holds up as their golden calf and before which they bow in reverence. Nevertheless, these are but bruises upon the head of the church for Satan intends to use this spirit of Jezebel to knock its members senseless to his plans and purposes. As Delilah betrayed Samson with her beauty, and her wiles lulled him into a false sense of security through earthly pleasures, so Jezebel mystifies the church with her craft and sleight of hand, ever mingling the grace of God with the spirit of deception making the former of none effect and inflicting harm upon all who fall under her sway. And should any man criticize her, they will be ridiculed and scorned for she has all the appearance of innocence and her work has seemingly been proven beneficial.

Rev EM Bounds once noted, “The strength of the church lies in its devotion to God. All else is incidental and is not the source of its strength. But in the worldly, popular language, a local church is called strong when its membership is large, and when it has social position and financial resources. A church is thought to be powerful when ability, learning, and eloquence fill the pulpit, and when the pews are filled by fashion, intelligence, money, and influence. An assumption of this kind is worldly to the fullest extent. The local church that defines its strength in this way is on the highway to apostasy.”

The Devil also encourages regenerated Christians to throw stones of condemnation at our own brothers and sisters in Christ when only a compassionate admonition would suffice. We must make sure that our speech is always seasoned with salt, telling the truth to all, but doing so in love. The Bible teaches us that we ought not separate ourselves from true brothers and sisters, and thus break the unity of the church without cause. Still, differences will exist and we are to be mindful of them. But to cast a stone is something that carries with it the implication of finality; and many so-to-speak Christians are ready to hurl a stone rather than offer their hand in lifting up one who is simply weak in faith and poor in doctrine, but is otherwise still seeking to know the truth of Christ. We are supposed to help one another not persecute each other. The Devil will provide us with persecution aplenty, so we need not have such as our default response in matters of faith and practice.

Being properly armed for spiritual warfare ought to include a lesson or two in identifying both friends and foes in Christ. It is often difficult at times to know who is and who is not our side in this fight. Nevertheless, we ought to make every effort to discern between the parties so as to avoid the enemy as well as hold to and support the faithful. So the next time you get the call to stone another, cast them the Rock of Christ via the word before you ever cast the stone of condemnation.

Let us pray,

O

 LORD our God, assist us daily that we might reach out in love to those who are as yet unsaved; that they too might come to know him who is the Rock of our Salvation, and our sure defense, even thine only begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells

While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

[2] In this case the word catholic catholic (derived via Late Latin catholicus, from the Greek adjective (katholikos), means universal) comes from the Greek phrase (kath’holou), meaning on the whole, according to the whole or in general, and is a combination of the Greek words meaning about and meaning whole.  The word in English means including a wide variety of things; all-embracing in particular as relating to the historic doctrine and practice of the Western Church.   It was first used to describe the Christian Church in the early 2nd century to emphasize its universal scope. In the context of Christian ecclesiology, it has a rich history and several usages.  The term has been incorporated into the name of the Roman Catholic Church, arguably not actually a Christian church, though with many Christian members, under the Bishop of Rome.  Other Christians use the term catholic (normally with a lower-case letter c) to refer not to the Roman Catholic Church but the Christian Church and all believers in Jesus Christ across the world and across the ages, regardless of denominational affiliation.

[3] This response was similar to God’s answer to Moses’ question, Who do I tell them sent me?

[6] If the text of this sentence seems familiar, it is John 3.16, probably the most widely quoted text of the Bible.

[7] The average 5-year survival rate for women with non-metastatic invasive breast cancer is 91%. The average 10-year survival rate for women with invasive breast cancer is 84%. If the invasive cancer is located only in the breast, the 5-year survival rate of women with breast cancer is 99%
