Second Sunday in Lent Sunday Report

Today was the Second Sunday in Lent

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

On Lent

If a man will but fast from his sins, he may eat what he pleases.

Robert E. Lee

American General and Patriot

On Lent

The best way for most of us is to fast from our sins and to eat what is good for us.

Robert E. Lee

American General and Patriot

What happens when you erase history and ignore facts and thus refuse to learn from same? You get to do it again, quite-probably with disastrous consequence.

Karl Denninger

20th and 21st century American entrepreneur and author

Children

Beware of that miserable delusion into which some have fallen — that parents can do nothing for their children, that you must leave them alone, wait for grace, and sit still. These people have wishes for their children in Balaam’s fashion— they would like them to die the death of the righteous man, but they do nothing to make them live his life. They desire much, and have nothing. And the devil rejoices to see such reasoning, just as he always does over anything which seems to excuse indolence, or to encourage neglect of means.

JC Ryle

19th century Anglican bishop and author

Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

Luke 12:40

Verily, verily I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for the meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

John 6:26-27

But godliness with contentment is great gain.

I Timothy 6:6

God has not called readers to check his Holy Bible for errors. He has called his Holy Bible to check us for errors.

Gail Riplinger

20th and 21st century American Bible scholar and author

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

Hosea 4:6

Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Matthew16:6

If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

Mark 9:23

Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

I Corinthians 5:7-8

Humanity always finds out, sooner or later, that it cannot get on without a religion, and it will take a false one in preference to none. Infidelity and practical ungodliness will become increasingly prevalent… and our churches will have a more arduous contest for growth if not for existence.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard.  It is quite interesting the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States.  Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church.  Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of the nation.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by the minister or in the case of Morning or Evening Prayer without a minister by the senior member present.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

ALMIGHTY God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves; Keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

And due to the rubric, the Collect for the Day is followed by the Collect for Ash Wednesday, which is found on Page 124:

Ash Wednesday.

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ This Collect is to be said every day in Lent, after the Collect appointed for the day, until Palm Sunday.

The Epistle for today comes from Paul’s First letter to the Thessalonians, the Fourth Chapter, beginning at the First Verse.  Apparently the Corinthians were not the only church founded in a Red Light District.  In this letter Paul is telling the people to refrain from random sex and get married.  Paul is starting into the beginning of his New Man concept.  We are called to be as God wants us to be, not as we would be without His guidance and help.  God does this, not that we would miss fun, but rather that we would enjoy happiness.

W

E beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: that no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his Holy Spirit.

This morning’s Gospel comes from the Gospel of Saint Matthew, the Fifteenth Chapter, beginning at the Twenty-First Verse.

J

ESUS went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

This story surfaces again in the Book of Common Prayer in the Prayer of Humble Access, in the Book of Common Prayer, Page 82:

W

E do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Sermon Notes

Second Sunday in Lent

Second Lesson, Evening Prayer

Pray without ceasing

Anglican Orthodox Communion Worldwide

25 February 2024, Anno Domini (In the Year of our Lord)

The Second Sunday in Lent.

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves; Keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

One great acknowledgment that stands out in today’s Collect for the Second Sunday in Lent is this: Since our father Adam partook of the ill-natured tree in the midst of the Garden, Man must still find himself constantly relying upon that OTHER Tree in the midst of the Garden at Eden which he rejected – the Tree of Life. Because of that rejection, we are full of sin and incapable of helping ourselves. We even return to, stop and listen to, and partake of the ill-fated fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. It is only the Mercy and Grace offered by the Tree of Life that keeps us from constantly appealing to the serpent of the other tree. This Collect originates in the Gregorian Sacramentary. For a fuller study and brief meditation on the Collects, I recommend The Collects of Thomas Cranmer, by C. Frederick Barbee and Paul F.M. Zahl. (Erdmans, 1999)

Sir Francis Bacon has said: “A man’s nature runs either to herbs or weeds. Therefore, let him seasonably water the one and destroy the other.”

Second Lesson

Evening Prayer

A

ND he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; 2 Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: 3 And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. 4 And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; 5 Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. 6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. 7 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? 8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?  (Luke 18:1-8)

This parable clearly points to the importance of faith exercised through prayer. We have in the Parable, a contrast:

…There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:

  1. A politically powerful judge and no doubt wealthy by the standards of the day, who does not fear God or man,  and  3 And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.

  1. A poor widow with no political or social standing who had been oppressed, but who feared God and believed in the power of righteousness and persistent prayer. She was incessant in her pleas for justice. She NEVER gave up on seeking justice, and believed , though she was powerless, that justice would be gained through her persistence in bringing her case. Before Christ, women were property and not entitled to rights or privileges.

The unrighteous have momentary advantage over the righteous because they are not bound by just restraint. They make their own rules, but the righteous must abide by justice. But the wicked also like to be left alone to their wicked devices. They do not wish to be constantly reminded that they are wicked. They do not want others to notice, therefore,

Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

Persistence in prayer, as in Olympic sports, bears its own reward, however, prayer without faith will simply amount to useless babbling. Why would you plead endlessly to your parents for some desired gift if there were no hope in gaining the thing begged for? Or why study without measure when your final grade will have no possibility of being improved thereby? Or why save your money and invest in gold or silver if there were no prospect of getting a handsome return?

Let us refer to the Book of James Chapter 2, beginning at the 14th Verse:

W

HAT doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

How did the unjust judge respond to the lady’s petition?

4 And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; 5 Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

The wicked lack the promise the righteous own in knowing all things work together for good to those who love the Lord and are the called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)

So the woman has, at least, the satisfaction of knowing that justice will certainly come, either now, or later.

Jesus counsels us to take a lesson from this appeal of the poor widow and the results accomplished through persistent petition.

And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.

Christ is telling us the same principle applies in prayer.

And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?

We know from the record of history despots and evil-doers all have eventually met their doom. The Caesars of history are remembered with revulsion…..the Hitlers, Mussolini’s, Stalins, Pol Pots, Maos, etc have fallen before the creeping advance of time and wield no power or respect of generations today at all. The same is true of Kim Il Sung who is a rotting corpse in a grave in North Korea.

But the righteous, as Moses, Elijah, and Enoch, are in the presence of heavenly bliss and are fondly remembered by the righteous.

How will God hear the prayers of His elect?

I tell you that he will avenge them speedily.

God will always act at the proper hour. He does not rush to judgment as do men. He considers a thing, and then does it. Moreover, He knows, better than we, the proper answer to our prayers. When we grow strong in knowing the Mind of God, our prayers will more often reflect the will of God in all that we pray for.

The Lord’s prayer – …thy Will be done!

…..O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. (Matt 26:42)

….O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. (Matt 26:39)

The last sentence of this parable should be troubling to us:

Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

This last question is a rhetorical one, and designed to give us pause to think on its significance.  What does the Bible say about these last days before the return of Christ?

T

HIS know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of  godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, 7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.……10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, 11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. (2 Timothy 3)

You can see this being fulfilled around you this very day. Not only do the wicked deceive, but they are also being deceived because they are evil, and the company they keep is evil.

What is the Christian response to this growing wickedness?

But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Do not respond as the men before the Great Flood while Noah was building the Ark. Their hearts were darkened and they took up vile affections…..what were these affections?  The same as those for which God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

What are some of the signs?  Friday an earthquake shook the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. Saturday, one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded devasted Conception, Chile and surrounding areas. In January, what happened in Haiti?

What about wars that are proliferating around the globe? There is war in Iraq and Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, Africa, and now Yemen. Does God know of these events?

A

ND Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. 6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. 8 All these arethe beginning of sorrows. 9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. 10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. 11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. 12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. 13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.  (Matt 24:4-13)

These very events are being fulfilled as we speak.

What should the Christian do in these days?

Pray without ceasing  (1 Thess 5:17)

and

F

OR yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. 4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.  6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.  (1 Thess 5:2)

Pray with a fullness of faith that righteousness will come to those who seek it. Justice always follows in the righteous steps of God’s people.

Even in our infirmity, God will sustain us always.

Bp Jack brings the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together because as is always the case there is a unifying message in the Scripture for this Sunday.   Bp Jack’s sermon is below the propers and can be viewed on video HERE -> https://youtu.be/-TVbL9-aRj0

Good morning! I hope you are all doing well. In today’s sermon we will be looking at the unifying message of the Collect, Epistle and Gospel and examine how they share a common message of action as we enter into the time of Lent, a season of preparation.  Let us start by reading today’s Collect:

The Second Sunday in Lent.

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves; Keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Consider these words from the Collect:

… we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves; Keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul …

In the Collect, we acknowledge to God that we cannot direct our own lives; if we listen to our own selves we are without guidance.  Consider the airplane flying, it orders its movements according to Polaris, the Pole Star of True North.  If a pilot flies guided by his “inner self” he soon knows only where he is: at the controls, and little else.  Like the pilot who needs to know where the True North is so he can orient himself, we need God’s guidance to move towards our goal of eternal life with Him. While flying my aircraft in instrument meteorological conditions or IMC , I have to rely on the aircraft instruments as our bodily senses lie to us about our aircrafts true altitude. So too do we have to rely on Scriptures for our guidance on the path towards heaven as our natural inclinations will also lie to us on our true performance.. This is why we cannot rely on ourselves to navigate towards heaven but we need the help of our spiritual navigator the Holy Ghost.

The first step of getting onto the narrow uphill path towards heaven is that we have to let Him into our hearts in order to let Him guide us. If we do not do this, then how can we expect to have Him guide us, if we are not open and ready to receive Him and His Guidance? We would be perpetually lost and would never make it onto the narrow uphill path towards heaven. This is why need the help of the Holy Ghost to be our infalliable co pilot and help guide us on the narrow uphill path towards heaven

Thus, when Paul tells us to keep our bodies under control of our minds and our minds to be guided by God only, He helps move us on course. He tells us to avoid the things that can sabotage our journey towards God and can physically hurt both our souls and body. These things he lists out are things that would derail us if we engaged in those activities. We must seek to not do them and to instead remain on the courseline that the Holy Spirit has outlined for us. This ties in very well with the collect’s request for God to keep us outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls. It links the theme of both spiritual and physical moderation extremely well. If we stay away from the things that would derail us, we will find our journey on the narrow uphill trail to be much easier than if we didn’t stay away from those things. The Holy Ghost will help us avoid those negative activities and moderate our spiritual and physical lives if we will allow Him in and listen to His Guidance.

Being honest with others and especially ourselves is one of the most important things we can do. If we are not honest with ourselves to start, how can we be honest with others?  The worst person to lie to is yourself after all. For only by living our faith can we demonstrate that we in fact have faith.  For professed faith with no action when you are able to act is not real.  You must actualize what you claim to believe. We must put our nice words into action and not just leave them as words. We are called to be as God wants us to be, not as we would be without His guidance and help.  God does this, not that we would miss fun, but rather that we would enjoy true happiness.

Keeping evil thoughts under control can be a difficult task, but we do not have to face it alone, we have the Holy Ghost in our lives and other Christians and friends that support us and guide us, that can help us battle evil thoughts.  This is not a battle that we should be fighting alone, but with support from the Holy Ghost and our Christians and other friends. This proves that Christianity is not a solitary religion but a social one. We need the help of our fellow believers if we are to succeed at the race of Life. Of course we need to be willing to talk to our good friends within the Church about our problems and evil thoughts and listen to their advice, and more importantly to the Holy Ghost’s advice to combat these evil thoughts and drive away the temptations of the devil.  Christianity did not flourish because its followers were hermits, it flourished because its followers evangelized the religion throughout the known world. It is an active religion and it requires its followers to actively participate in it by spreading the Good news.  It would never have spread as far as it did if it was a hermetic religion.  Keeping our thoughts under control can be almost impossible at times but with the help of the Holy Spirit it is not impossible at all.

Matthew gives us a fine example of faith that demonstrates how we must be guided by faith in our Lord.  The woman who cries unto Jesus is a Gentile, just like us.  Just like us she longs for His Mercy.  In her case, she asks only for the mercy rejected by others, the crumbs of the Master’s Table[1].  This is the essence of our faith, we are not worthy to dine at His Table, no more than dogs are meet to dine at our table.  Yet, what is left over is more than enough for us.  And we are content with that, knowing what miserable creatures we are.  And, even more important, even knowing what miserable creatures we are, Jesus offers to share His Table with us.  This woman had just as much faith in Jesus as the Faithful Centurion. She had faith that He would share His Mercy with her and heal her Daughter. She was rewarded for her faith by Him healing her daughter.  The key in all of these interactions that Jesus had with these people, is that these people had tremendous faith in Him. We must have that same faith and we must show it in our lives by carrying out actions consistent with his message.

He is not content for us to grovel for His crumbs. If He offers His love for us, should we not love Him back, by acting upon our faith?  If you truly believe, you are compelled to act upon the faith you have. Action is the key cornerstone of the Christian faith. Jesus afterall laid down His life for ours on the cross that we might have eternal life, the ultimate example of action. If He did that for us, it would be behoove us to act upon our Faith and follow His Example of helping others and leading them to God.

It is also important to understand if one loves God, He still has the exact same amount of love available for any other person or group.  His love is infinite, even if it wasn’t, love multiplies in use! We do not have to worry about God running out of love at all. There is more than enough to go around!

Recognize how poorly you do with your own guidance, accept His Guidance, stay on course and accept the fruits of that action. Realize that you will make mistakes multiple times in your life, but what counts is that you turn back to God and do your best not to make that same mistake again.

There is but one way to heaven.

That easy to find, easy to follow, easy to hike path does not lead to the summit where eternal life in the real world awaits.  Open your heart to the Holy Ghost, use His Power to follow our Lord to God who awaits in heaven.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

¶ This Collect is to be said every day in Lent, after the Collect appointed for the day, until Palm Sunday.

The Old Testament is full of foreshadowing, most especially when dealing with the redemption of God’s people.  We see in this passage several instances of foreshadowing.

6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: 7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.

The least will become the greatest.

9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me. 10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

Joseph had two dreams, first his brothers bow down in obeying him, second dream even his mother and father as well as his brothers bow down to obey him.

This of course is the foreshadowing of when the family goes to Egypt years later seeking famine relief.  The brothers will come upon their youngest who is now third in command of all of Egypt. Eventually the pharaoh will place Joseph second only to him. Joseph will be instrumental in getting Egypt ready for seven years of famine.  Again, dreams will be the answer.  Joseph will interpret pharaoh’s dream and will be put in charge of preparations against the coming famine.

What was meant for evil, God turned to good    Jacob loved his younger sons more than his older ten, thus causing some intense jealousy. Jacob’s second wife was his first love. Rachel died during childbirth of Benjamin. Joseph and Benjamin were sons of Rachel and Jacob.

Suffice it to say, this jealousy will eventually turn bad.  The older brothers, already not happy with their brother Joseph.  Eventually they plot to kill him and instead they sell him into slavery. They sold him to a caravan going to Egypt. Eventually after a number of years the one sold into slavery, the one bound and held against his will, becomes the “savior” of his whole family.

It is because he became a slave, a servant, a lowly person, he would later be able to rescue his family from certain death by starvation, a number of years later.

As we survey the landscape of life, sometimes we cannot see what is happening either in the short term or long.

In our lesson today, we see how the Lord prepared the way for the whole family of Jacob, to preserve them for a greater purpose.  By making sure the twelve tribes survived, God sealed the covenant He made with Abraham about the ongoing family that Abraham was father to.   This would be another opportunity for Satan to stop the redemption process through Christ, by stopping the family line early on.   If you look at the long genealogy of Christ, you see several times there is a thin line that almost is broken.  This is one of those times.

The family of Jacob is on the edge of starvation, but they will be redeemed, not because they did good, but because they meant evil.  God of course turned it around so Joseph could save his brothers and father.

Ref. 45:5 ff.  …do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you….7. But God sent me ahead of you to preseve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

Joseph was a proto-Christ figure in the Old Testament.

His Christlike Spirit Shown; as we read about what Joseph did instead of what he could have done to his brothers, we see the spirit of Christ being foreshadowed in Joseph’s behavior.

  1. Forgiving his brothers’ sins   Gen. 45:15   …And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them.  Afterward his brothers talked with him.

  1. Filial devotion   Gen  46:29    …as soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father and wept for a long time.  [Christ honors His Father by doing his will, as in going to the Cross]

  1. Returning good for evil   Gen 50: 19 – 21 But Joseph said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?  You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.  So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.  And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

When adversity comes our way, we need to see that it may be for our good. One way or another we can learn to move around the roadblocks and troubles that sometimes hit us on life’s way. The Lord gives us many lessons in His Word.  It is our job to read and study these lesson and see how they apply to our modern world.  NOT change the lessons, NOT adapt the lessons, but LEARN from the lessons.    We are often tempted to change, modify, or alter the lessons of the WORD to avoid upsetting anyone and making sure we don’t trigger a sensitive person.

We should always bear in mind that the WORD is a stumbling block to the lost.  Many people do not want to repent and turn from their wickedness and live.  So they find ways to “soften” the Word of God so as to sooth itchy ears, to calm jangled nerves, to not cause anyone to be afraid.

That is not what the Word of God is meant to do.   We are to take up our cross and follow Him who died for our sins and opened the gates to Heaven.  He is our Salvation.  Christ Jesus our Lord.

God be with you this week.  May He bless and keep you.

Let us pray:

G

OD the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, bless you and keep you; the Lord make his Face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you; the Lord lift up his Countenance upon you, and give you peace.    Amen.

T

HE LORD bless us, and keep us. The LORD make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The LORD lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and evermore.  Amen.

Second Sunday in Lent

A Woman of Great Faith

  1. February 2024, Anno Domini

Amen.

T

HEN Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. (Matthew 15, 21-28)

Jesus was under considerable pressure. The hostility of the people had intensified. Master and His   disciples withdrew into the borders of Tyre and Sidon in Phoenicia. That was north-west of Canaan. And there is a woman (this lady is a Canaanite – a Syrophoenician by birth, a Greek by birth, a Gentile by birth (Mark 7:26)) who is said to have Great faith. She is a champion of faith.

Tyre and Sidon – these cities are well known or notorious to be wicked, sinful cities.  Jews have always said, they are the ones who deserve the hottest parts in hell.  The lifestyle, the religion and worship in Tyre and Sidon was filled with idolatry. The news about the miraculous Doctor and Healer was already widespread not only in Israel, but also abroad in these parts.

There was one woman, who came. This woman, has a little daughter who is stricken with demon possession; she had an unclean spirit. Desperate problem. And when she heard that Jesus is here, she came and fell down at the feet of Jesus, obviously asking for help. This cry is a manifestation of the desperation of a woman, a mother who heard about Jesus, about his goodness and kindness towards the sick, heard about Jesus’ miracles. Instead of healing her demon-possessed daughter right away, Jesus kept raising the bar, making things difficult for her. But all that was meant to draw out her deep faith in Him. And after a very tense conversation, Jesus declares and “said unto her”: “O woman, great is thy faith”.

What is “Great Faith”? Great faith and little faith have nothing to do with the size, amount, or degree of faith. Her story reminds us of what faith, prayer and love looks like when we are faced with real, personal adversity. So, what is it about her faith that makes it great? This lady like other persons throughout the New Testament, demonstrate the greatest faith, recognizing that we need Jesus. They realizing that can’t get it right on our own, We can’t fix ourselves, our problems.  We need Jesus, because Great faith requires a great need. Augustin once said that “there is a hole in the heart, that can only be filled by Jesus”.

Also, Great Faith Requires Persistent Trust!  When this woman first turns to Jesus, he ignores her – He doesn’t answer her at all, at first. In this case, however, Jesus’ behavior is surprising: he does not respond to the woman’s request, he does not pay attention to the woman, nor does he answer her. He makes it clear that he has no interest in miraculously intervening in the case of this troubled woman. The disciples cannot understand this, that is why they stand up for this woman and ask Jesus to do something and help her in her distress. Maybe you feel that way sometimes when you’ve prayed. Many speak or wrote about “The Absence of God.” Or “God is silent” when we pray.

But Jesus has a plan.

With the woman, also with the apostles.

This Canaanite woman same like we, sometimes the only answer we seem to hear is silence. And that can test and challenge our faith, can’t it? But Canaanite woman responds to his silence with faithGreat faith does not give up, but persists!

Finally, Jesus want to teach her and teach us, during conversation with her, that Great faith doesn’t require us to be worthy. The Jews considered themselves the only worthy ones, However, in the conversation between Jesus and this woman we see that Jesus is teaching us that it is not about our worthiness. It’s about grace – God grace. Because great faith relies on God.

Jesus admires the faith of this woman, admires her urgent and persistent request. And thus he exceeds the limits of his mission. He says to the distressed woman: “be it unto thee even as thou wilt.” And from that moment on, her daughter was healthy.

Perhaps it is not surprising the “champions” of great faith were the “outsiders” during Jesus’ time.  As in the case of the Syrophoenician woman God allows our faith to go through difficult, sometimes even absurd situations. He wants to purify her, He wants to find out if we can really give ourselves into His hands and believe that His love is much bigger than our plans, desires and expectations.

Let’s cry for God’s help through Christ the Lord persistently and without any doubts. Let us confidently expect help at all times and in all our physical and spiritual needs. Let us trust God’s grace and remain in true trust in Jesus as the Redeemer and Savior of the world. Jesus sought, is seeking, and will seek such faith until his second coming. He blesses such faith already here in time and with a reward in eternity. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Second Sunday in Lent

In today’s Gospel, our Lord was approached by a Syrophenician woman whose daughter was possessed of an evil spirit.  Her faith in him was such that even when told by our Lord that he was come to the lost sheep of the house of Israel and It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and cast it to the dogs, she persisted with the comment: Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. Our Lord’s response was clear: O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And the apostle then noted, And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

In an earlier chapter of today’s gospel (9:20-22), our Lord healed a woman who had an issue of blood. He recognized her faith when he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole (v.22). The woman truly believed that by merely grasping his clothing she would be healed of her infirmity, and she was.

Another example of our Lord’s healing power was when he heard a group of ten lepers calling out to him for mercy (Luke 17:11-19). He did not touch them and said nothing more than to Go shew yourselves unto the priests (v.14). Of the ten, only one returned to give thanks and he was a Samaritan. To this man he said, Arise and go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole (v.19).

These events, as well as others during our Lord’s earthly ministry, were included within the pages of scripture and provide a message of hope and comfort as they set forth the power of God to do good to those who hold a true and abiding faith in Jesus Christ. God as our Creator has the power to act within our frame of reference and in ways we may not expect. The question for us then is do we see his hands at work in our lives and give him the glory?

Over the ages, the Devil and his servants have worked indefatigably to keep as many souls as he can from reaching out to God through Christ. Think about how many others who were standing nearby that hemorrhaging woman, or the Syrophenician woman, or the ten lepers, could have been healed but were not because they had not faith enough to reach out for him? And such remains true today. There are actually persons who claim to be Christians all the while possessing no real faith in Jesus Christ as God’s only begotten Son. They refuse to accept the truth about Jesus of Nazareth as being the Christ, the Saviour, the King of kings and Lord of lords. They cannot envision him as such because they have been blinded by Satan who has taken the word out of their hearts leaving them with naught but an empty space wherein he has dumped a horrendous amount of skepticism and doubt concerning the things of God.

But there was no skepticism or doubt on the part of the woman with the issue of blood, the Samaritan leper, or the Syrophenician woman. God’s word has made it plain what he desires of us: that we would also come forward and confess our sins to him in the name of Jesus Christ, and be healed so that we can go on with our lives, freed from their ill effects. You see sin makes us ill spiritually and may even affect us physically. We know that when we are physically ill we ought to seek some sort of prompt relief. We will try all the conventional remedies available to us; but if they do not work, then we may even have to call on a physician for more advanced treatments. With sin sickness, we need to go to the throne of God’s grace. Frederick W. Faber once penned these lines in a hymn (#304, 1940 Hymnal):

There is no place where earth’s sorrows,

are more felt than up in heav’n;

there is no place where earth’s failings

have such kindly judgment giv’n.

There is plentiful redemption

in the blood that has been shed;

there is joy for all the members

in the sorrows of the Head.

The woman with the issue of blood trusted in our Lord’s power to heal her if she but touched his garment. How often do we pray, “O if I could but touch thy garment O Lord and be healed of my sins, my illnesses, my failings and faults? O wouldest thou forgive me and cleanse me, O God, in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ?”

In today’s Gospel, the Holy Ghost also moved the woman whose daughter was possessed by a devil to approach our Lord on account of her extremity. I have often heard it said, “that when we are at our[2] wit’s end, that is where the regenerate person will find God waiting.” He is patiently waiting for us to come to him when all other options in our chest of knowledge have failed us. And when he delivers us, if we have any courage at all, we will confess to him our foolishness of not coming to him in the first place.

So the moral of our lesson today is this: Go to God with your cares and concerns, with your triumphs and your tragedies, with your sorrows and sufferings, and surely, with your praises and thanksgivings for all that he has done for you in Christ Jesus. Therefore go and seek him as if you wished to touch his garment, trusting that in that moment he will do for you more than you could ever possibly imagine[3]. And then be sure to give him the glory and praise with heart-felt thanks.

Let us pray,

F

ATHER, we call upon thee to fill us with thy most holy Spirit; that under his influence we would seek thee daily via our prayers and praises, and that you would, in turn, touch our lives and make of us fit servants of thy kingdom; and this we beg in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Have a blessed week,

Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  Wed like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Columbiq

I am writing to request your prayers for Colombia, my country. At this moment frightful things are happening, a great diabolical shadow is cast over this nation.

  1. The Constitutional Court in a tyrannical way has decriminalized the crime of abortion in Colombia, even up to six months. This is an illegitimate process, the court is legislating, something that is not within the competence of the judges, on the other hand the issue of abortion was a cause judged in 2006, which is why it should not be judged again in 2022. But socialist groups, international elites, social engineers and feminist groups have not given up on the issue. They want to traffic in death.

  1. The candidate of the extreme left Gustavo Petro is close to become the president of Colombia, this is a man who in his youth was a guerrilla criminal, a vile and despicable man who has always served the interests of drug trafficking, he was an advisor to Chavez who implanted Communism in Venezuela, his second home is Communist Cuba.

  1. The same court approved the movement of Gustavo Petro called: la Colombia Humana, it gave him the status of a political party, with this, he has the possibility of getting to introduce at least 15 congressmen, basically he is close to kidnapping all the powers, he already has the judicial power in his pocket, he only lacks the executive and the legislative. We are close to the precipice, we trust in a miracle of God.

We hope you support us with your prayers, I will ask the brothers to pray unceasingly so that in his mercy we will be saved from these perverse men. God bless you and keep you in all things.

Your servant in Christ,

Bishop José Antonio Rios

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

[1] Sound familiar?  Check out the Prayer of Humble Access, Holy Communion, BCP Page 82.

[2] Our wit’s end, that is the problem, our!  We must be like today’s examples and look to our wits, our brilliance, but those of our Lord God Almighty.  If you believe that title, Almighty, that is ALL Mighty.

[3] Ask and ye shall receive.  But, you have to ask and you have to receive.  You have to see it when God delivers it.  For, there are none so blind as those who will not see.

[4] Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells.  While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.  The most common cause of death related to multiple myeloma is infection, with pneumonia being the most common fatal infection. Other common causes of death are bleeding (from low platelet counts), complications of bone fractures, kidney failure, and blood clots in the lungs.
