a Hymn Devotion for 8 July 2025 Anno domini, the Anglican Orthodox Communion Worldwide

Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee.  (Psalms 67:3)

This a hymn of beautiful lyrics untied with reverent baroque musical score by Luigi Rossi (1597-1653). The lyrical composer is John Crosse (published in1825). This version of the hymn taken from the Book of Common Praise – the Hymn Book of the Church of England (Canada), 1909 edition pg 342. It is a hymn of praise to the omniscient, omnipresent Sovereign of all Creation – Heaven, Earth, and Ocean. The hymn is truly a hymn of prayer extolling the great joy of owning God as or Almighty King without asking anything else. Such prayers are pleasing to God for all things good belong to those who love the Lord.

LORD OF HEAVEN AND EARTH AND OCEAN

1 Lord of heaven and earth and ocean,
Hear us from thy bright abode;
While our hearts, with true devotion,
Own their great and gracious God.

 2 Now with joy we come before thee,
Seek thy face, thy mercies sing;
Lord of life, of light and glory,
O, accept the praise we bring!

 3 Health, and every needful blessing,
Unto us are daily shown;
And with joy thy love confessing,
Now we bend before thy throne.

 1 Lord of heaven and earth and ocean, Hear us from thy bright abode; While our hearts, with true devotion, Own their great and gracious God. God the Father, pre-existent in the glories of His Heaven, has blessed us with every needful resource for our lives and souls. He sent His only Begotten Son from the opulence of grace and love to earth to be a visible manifestation in bodily form as man. In that we way, we are enabled to know God intimately through acquaintance with His Son who is One with the Father in every aspect of Mind and Will. He does, indeed, hear us from His Highland Throne when our prayers are lifted from this wilderness of sin and depravity. The true heart that loves God can only do so through constant devotion fed daily upon the Bread of Heaven that is the Word of God.

2 Now with joy we come before thee, Seek thy face, thy mercies sing; Lord of life, of light and glory,
O, accept the praise we bring!
With what other mood can we approach the face of our Lord? Are we suffering the loss of a loved one to the sleep of death, or personal hurt or grief? Do we not remember that there is no death in Christ our love for him, and His love for us survives death. Are we sick or hurting? Know we not that He is the Great Physician standing at the ready to revive and heal us? He is truly Lord of Life and the Light of Life. We must rest assured that He will never reject our sincere praise.

3 Health, and every needful blessing, Unto us are daily shown; And with joy thy love confessing,
Now we bend before thy throne.
Our Lord offers perfect health in body and Spirit, but our own sinful natures deprives us of that health at times in our walk of life. Even the sins of Adam has brought death and suffering to the race – how much less our own. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. The most serious illness a person can suffer is that of spiritual sickness or even death. “For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.” (1 Corinthians 11:30) The one healing that supersedes all others is life itself, and that life eternal. We were all dead in trespasses and sin ere the Lord called from without the tomb of our fleshly burial and quickened us in Christ – made us alive, lifted our unbecoming yoke, and set our feet on solid ground (the Rock which is Christ).
