Memorial Day

Sunday Report

This past Monday was Memorial Day, the day set aside to remember and honor those whose lives bought our freedom and their families who remain behind.  Today was Trinity Sunday, the beginning of the Endless Green Season, the liturgical color is white, thus the green outlined white letters of the title!

Bishop’s Letter for Memorial Day Observance 25 May 2015, Anno Domini (in the 239th year of our Declaration of Independence)

Bishop’s Memorial Day Letter

Memorial Day, 2015

            The cost, in blood and treasure, of our liberties in America is beyond measure; but this cost points to a principle of the American psyche that has existed from the beginning and prompted our fore-fathers to risk all, including their “lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor”. (from Declaration of Independence – last line) Yes, honor is a sacred trust as well as the lives of the men who placed such a premium upon it that they were willing to give their lives to defend our freedoms.

            Memorial Day is a day devoted to the honor of those who gave the last great sacrifice in defense of a nation highly favored by God. As long as men and women of honor continue in that tradition, our nation will remain free; however, a key component of freedom is a reliance on the Providence of a Beneficent God that is the Guarantor of Liberty. If we ever forget that gracious Hand that has fed, guided and defended our the peoples of our far-flung shores, we will find that we have also lost our liberties along with our memories.

I have put together a few lines of poetry to commemorate this day of remembrance and sacrifice entitled, “Call to Arms”. It reflects my sentiments for the day, and I hope yours, too:

Call to Arms

The call to arms resounded

 From sea to shining sea.

The soldier packed his knapsack

And took his final leave.

He left behind a family –

A daughter, son, and wife,

And made his roll-call muster

And then he gave his life.

The dirge sounds slow and muffled

As his comrades bear him on –

The flag-draped casket jostles

As the Caisson rolls along.

He may have been a youngster

In his early manhood bloom –

Or she may have been a doctor

Near the battle’s crash and boom.

But one and all stand honored

Amid the cross and star

As heroes of the nation

Who gave their all in war.

The Blue Star mother mourns –

The young wife bides alone –

As the nation pays its tribute

For the seeds of freedom sown.

On distant shores celestial –

The trumpet sounds the call

As freedom’s angels gather

To greet the soldier home.

            Bare-headed, I salute every combat soldier, sailor, airman, and Coast Guardsman who gave his/her all for me, and for you, and for you, and for YOU – on this Memorial Day in America of 2015 (in the Year of our Lord)!

Memorial Day

Rev LTC Hap Arnold, CA ANG USAF Retired

Last Monday was Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember those members of our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice, without whose sacrifice we would not be free.  This is not a day to thank a veteran, probably it is the only day of the year that it is not the day for that.  All veterans heard the country’s call and answered.  They were not those who would not hear.  But, those of us here today are the fortunate ones, for whatever reason we made it back.   In my case after 30 years and two weeks of military service with the Navy and Air Force, thirty percent of the people I flew with did not make it back one way or the other.  They are the ones we remember today, they paid the entire bill for our freedom.  Well, maybe not all the cost.

When we think of Memorial Day, we remember the young men and women who since the beginning of this great nation answered the call of freedom when our country was in peril, rode into battle and did not return.  We honor those who lost their lives in training, transit and combat.  But, we often forget the families they left behind; mothers, fathers, wives and husbands, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters.  Each of them bore a portion of the cost of freedom.  This cost is not a one shot deal.  Those who remain behind pay every day of their time left here on earth.  The cost of freedom is high, very high.  It is just cheaper than not being free.  But, it is payable on demand.

If you want to know what freedom costs, ask our Presiding Bishop. Jerry Ogles younger brother Kenneth Wayne Ogles joined the National Guard at age 17 and immediately transferred to the active Army’s First Cavalry Division.  He wanted to make a difference, to do his duty to God and Country and protect the innocent people of South Vietnam.  Kenwas killed in action on 16 February 1967, in the Ia Drang Valley, in the Binh Dinh Province, South Vietnam, with the First Platoon of C Company, the First Battalion of the 8th Cavalry, First Cavalry Division at the age of 19.  There is not a day that has gone by in the intervening 48 years that Jerry and his family did not measure the cost of freedom.  Remember Kenneth the next time someone wants you to give a little freedom for the promise of safety or comfort.

I do not know how many ways to say it, but FREEDOM IS NOT FREE; it is the most costly commodity on this earth, except for not being free.  That costs more.

Memorial Days[1].

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, in whose hands are the living and the dead; We give thee thanks for all those thy servants who have laid down their lives in the service of our country. Grant to them thy mercy and the light of thy presence, that the good work which thou hast begun in them may be perfected; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord. Amen.

It seems to me that Memorial Day is one of the saddest days of our year.  This is not because of the cost to our country, in particular the families who remain behind, though that cost is huge.  The reason the day so sad is that the people have absolutely no feeling for the cost of the freedom they value so little today.

Our country is free today because when our freedom has been threatened by those who would overturn our way of life, patriots stepped forward to take action against our country’s foes.  They put their lives on the line that we might be free.  Tomorrow on Memorial Day, we remember those whose lives were given, whose families paid the price for our freedom today.  They did not give their lives for anything but freedom.  If you ascribe their motives to other motives, you do so at your own peril.

Hundreds of thousands have given their future and the futures of their families’ for ours.  Charge your glass, raise it high.  Drink to them.  Give thanks to God for their patriotism and steadfast courage.

A final note to each of you veterans reading this report, each of you stepped forward when the country called.  You heard the call others could not.

We are the lucky ones, we are here.  We must never forget the cost of freedom, dearly paid by those who have gone before us.

To my fellow veterans, I thank each of you for stepping forward and I am grateful you are all here with me to remember.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Death – Shall I speak of it or will that be worse?

I have learned now that while those who speak about one’s miseries usually hurt one, those who keep silence hurt more. They help to increase the sense of general isolation which makes a sort of fringe to the sorrow itself. You know what cogent reason I have to feel with you: but I can feel for you too. I know that what you are facing must be worse than what I must shortly face myself, because your happiness has lasted so much longer and is therefore so much more intertwined with your whole life. As Scott said in like case, ‘What am I to do with that daily portion of my thoughts which has for so many years been hers?’

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 186-188, with the Collect first:

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hast given unto us thy servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of the Divine Majesty to worship the Unity; We beseech thee that thou wouldest keep us stedfast in this faith, and evermore defend us from all adversities, who livest and reignest, one God, world without end. Amen.

This morning’s Epistle was written in the Fourth Chapter of the Revelation of Saint John the Divine beginning at the First Verse.  John attempts to show us the majesty and glory of heaven using words.  The picture he paints is intended to be awe inspiring and seems to meet that goal handily:

A

FTER this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes before and behind. And the first was like a lion, and the second like a calf, and the third had a face as a man, and the fourth was like a flying eagle. And the four living creatures had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those living creatures give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are, and were created.

Today’s Gospel came from the Third Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the First Verse:

T

HERE was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: the same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old?  Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Sermon Notes

Trinity Sunday – Ordination of Edward Pressey and John Evetts

Saint George’s Anglican Church, Ventura, California

31 May 2015, Anno Domini (In the Year of our Lord)

We have gathered here at this time and place today to worship the Lord in Holy Communion, and to ordain in prayerful contemplation two men whom the Lord has called into His ministry of Holy Orders as priests.

In the United States, a commission grants authority to act on behalf of the Chief Executive Power – the President.

In the Church, the commission to preach the Gospel is granted to all whom the Lord has called into His Holy Ministry.

Acting on behalf of the Almighty Sovereign of all Creation, the ministry calls for men whose integrity is unassailable and whose faith is tried and proven.

Such men must never exceed the terms of their calling in God, but to preach His pure and unadulterated Word, and to quit themselves as men of an Holy disposition.

Reading from the Gospel of St. Matthew 28:19-20

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

The ministry of God is a sacred trust the violation of which will redound to the great detriment of the offender. For, as we read from 1 Cor 14:8 –

For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?  (1 Cor 14:8)

An UNCERTAIN sound resounds throughout the world, and even the Church, today. Holy Scripture has been abandoned in favor of social issues to soothe itching ears. The teachings from the modern pulpit are influenced more by the values of the world than of the church.

As ministers of God, we are not to compromise on the Word of God to please social engineers or the wicked inclinations of  those who are in rebellion against the Lord of Glory and His Holy Word.

As will be discovered from the Epistle reading for today, God has established orders for His ministers. The authority granted is not our own, but belongs solely to God. As ambassadors and emissaries of the Divine Power, we are to represent, in minute detail, the will and teaching of Him who sent us.

The labor of the ministry is not labor at all, but a blessed rest for the true ministers does not his own works, but the woirks of Christ are to be manifested throughout his life.

9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. 10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. (Heb 4:9-10)

Incidentally, the Greek word for ”rest’ in verse nine is Sabbatismos (referring to the eternal Sabbath we enjoy in Christ by allowing Him to work through us and suppressing our own works by the power of the Holy Ghost.

In the Holy Gospel for today (Matthew 9), we read of the plenteous harvest that awaits those who sow the seed of the Gospel near and far.

We are to sow indiscriminately on all soils. The germination oif those seed we sow is not our affair, but that of the Holy Ghost that nurtures and works in the heart of the earth to awaken the tiny seed to grow and to reach for the sun.

Unfortunately, there are far too many laborers today who work in darkness to sow seeds of deception and a false Gospel.

The minister, as a soldier of valor for God, must guard against such false doctrine and leavenous poisons that are so prevalent in churches today.

Trinity Sunday: What an auspicious day for ordination into God’s ministry!

The Gospel for Trinity Sunday is found in that beautiful 3rd chapter of the Gosepl of St. John;

It speaks of a man named Nicodemus who came to Jesus by night.

Nicodemus was a powerful man – a Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin (the only member to speak in defense of Jesus). (John 7:50)

Yet, he came by night. Some have suggested that he came at night as a matter of convenience of a busy man. Others have suggested that he was fearful of condemnation by the other members of the Sanhedrin. I believe the latter to be the case.

On each of the two separate occasion in which Nicodemus is subsequently mentioned, John reminds us that Nicodemus was the one who came to Jesus by night! Why would he mention this unless it attached a defining significance to the name of Nicodemus.

Though Nicodemus came to Jesus at first by night, he never again hid his love and faith for Christ.

In the end, he publicly exposed himself to the hatred of the Jews, and of Rome, by appearing with Joseph of Arimethea to claim the body of Christ at the court of the Roman Prelate, Pontius Pilate.

As ministers, our faith may have begun as that of a grain of mustard seed, but all seed (to be productive) must grow. And so, as ministers, we must grow with the pure Word of god that we preach.

I congratulate, and caution, the men who are called to the Holy Office of priest today. Your calling is the most joyful and glorious a man can take up if he remains faithful and devoted toi Christ and His lambs.

However, the words of the Apostle Peter are most apt as a warning, not only to the laity of God, but most directly, the ministers:

8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. 11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. (1 Peter 5:8-11)

Revelation 4:1-11, John 3:1-15

Trinity Sunday

May 31, 2015

Here we are again, going into Trinity Season of another year.  Those who mark time by the secular calendar will say we don’t begin the second half of the year until July.  But those who go by the Church calendar know that our new year starts with the first Sunday in Advent, and we are almost exactly half way through the year.

The important thing about the church year is that since Advent we have been looking at prophecies about the Saviour’s arrival, and about His life and ministry, His death, resurrection, and ascension into Heaven.  In other words, we have maintained a strong emphasis on doctrine.  We have maintained a strong emphasis on His Second Coming.  His work is not yet completed. Oh, yes, His work on the cross is finished.  He paid the price of our sin and reconciliation to God by His one, full, and sufficient sacrifice.  But the creation has not yet been fully restored under Him.  There is still much evil to be overcome.  There are still wars and famines and pestilences and earthquakes, just as there have always been, and they will always continue until He returns.  These things are not signs that His return is near.  They are signs that He has not returned yet.

It the meantime He has placed us here to continue His work of reconciling people to God.  That seems odd to us, doesn’t it?  After all He tried, and all it got Him was a cross.  If He couldn’t do it, why should we think we can?

We read that He has given us His Bible, and His Spirit, and that He has overcome the world, and even His death was a victory, and we say. “Yes, that’s true, but the world is so entrenched in evil, and the natural inclination of all humanity is away from God, and even with the word and Spirit we are still a very few against so very many, and they seem to hold all the power, how can we hope to make even a small dent in the unbelief and darkness?  And then we read again, “with God, all things are possible.”

As we move into Trinity Season we begin to focus more on Christian living.  That is something we all need to do, year after year after year isn’t it?  We have been focusing more on Christian doctrine, and that is also something we need to do year after year after year, too, for we never know half as much as we think we know, and we are never half as godly and saintly as we think we are.

But today we look at one of the culminating doctrines of the entire Bible, the full doctrine of God, the Holy Trinity.  God, the Three in One. I want to do so by reading a few verses from the Bible in addition to the ones we read earlier.  You will probably know them by heart, but just listen as I quote them to you.

First is the very first verse of the Bible: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

The second is a little longer, from the first chapter of John’s Gospel:  “In the beginning was the the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God, the same was in the beginning with God, all things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.”

The third is from John 14, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.  And I will pray the Father and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever, even the Spirit of Truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.  At that day ye shall know that I am in my father, and ye in me, and I in you.”

Each of these passages show the unity and oneness of God.  In Genesis we see that God was in the beginning creating the heavens and the earth.  By the way, that “beginning” is our beginning, not God’s for He is without beginning or end.  In John 1 we see that the word of God, which became flesh and dwelt among us, is also that very exact same Being who created the heavens and the earth. Finally, in John 14 we see that this one God, who is Father and Son, is also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter who comes from the Father and the Sun, and is indeed one with them, the very same God through whom Christ is in the Father, the Father is in Christ, and we are in Him, and he is in us.

You will hear many detractors say Christians serve three gods, not one.  Indeed there are also many who call themselves Christians, who actually think there are more gods than the One God revealed in the Bible.  Especially, they believe Jesus Christ and God the Father are two distinct gods.  Not only is it incorrect, it is absolutely contrary to every teaching of Scripture.  The whole point of the Bible is that the One God who created all things good came to earth as a man to redeem those who have fallen into sin and now dwells within them by his Holy Spirit.  The  great God of all creation is far greater than we can understand.  The only source of truth we have about Him is that which is given in the pages of the Holy Bible.  The Bible does not tell us everything about God, for only one who is equal to God could understand everything about God.  But the Bible does tell us everything we need to know about God, and it reveals God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity now and forever.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Trinity Sunday

In our epistle lesson for today, the apostle John opened Chapter Four of Revelation by stating, After this I looked, and behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. In the three preceding chapters, St. John had been given messages for each of the seven churches in Asia Minor. Within the last message to the church at Laodicea we are given Christ’s position relative to the people in that church when he said, Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches (Revelation 3:20-22). God has an “open-door policy” but it is only accessed by a strait gate and a narrow way (St. Matthew 7:14).

Now we should not be surprised that profane humanity would seek to offer liberty, free commerce, or any other appealing scheme using scriptural messages as a metaphor to cover their conniving and deceitful plans. In the late 19th century, Secretary of State John Hay developed a foreign policy statement known as “the Open Door”. This pronouncement by our government was based on two notes which had been sent to the various powers who were doing business with Imperial China. In sum, our government called on those countries to recognize the territorial sovereignty of the Chinese government and affirm the commercial equality of all nations doing business there. Needless to say, this policy did not benefit Imperial China at all as the major powers continued their unabated partitioning of that country into spheres of influence, virtually guaranteeing to each the acceptance of their extortionist terms for trade and commerce in that beleaguered land.

From the above example, we may safely assume that in the eyes of a natural man, any so-to-speak open door policy which gratifies his desires and wishes will be given a passing mark, even if it means that others will suffer loss on account of his actions. The triple demons of Jealousy, Covetousness and Greed are constantly pushing the world of unregenerate mankind into such practices. As St. James noted in his epistle, From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts (4:1-3).

But God has his own open door policy with regard to his eternal kingdom, and one that we would be wise to heed if we desire to enter therein. First of all, God does not permit us to take unjust advantage of others. He does not sanction any injustice whether they be carried out by persons, businesses, or even governments. God’s law is clear. Consider the following examples:

Thou shalt not commit murder (Exodus 20:13). God does not permit the unjust taking of any human life. There are only certain limited conditions for taking the life of another which includes self-defense, or when the state exercises its duty to punish murderers, and during times of just war (not a war of aggression).

Thou shalt not steal (Exodus 20:15). God does not accept the unjust taking of the belongings of others.

Thou shalt not covet… anything that is thy neighbor’s (Exodus 20:17). God has given to whom he will, what he wills; therefore he does not sanction even the desire to make off with the belongings of others.

Thou shalt not oppress a stranger (Exodus 23:8). God has called on all men to seek the good of their fellows and to abstain from those things that will result in their harm. This commandment includes the use of government to take from one person to give to another against the will of the holder.

Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honour the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbor (Leviticus 19:15). God expects us to be fair and just to all regardless of their material well-being.

Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the LORD your God… (Leviticus 19:36a). God calls on each of us to be just and fair in our business dealings with others.

We have been admonished in the Scriptures to keep God’s commandments and live, and such means more than what is the extent of this life. Witness the words of our Lord, I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved… (St. John 10:9). And to the angel of the church of Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth and no man shutteth; and shutteth and no man openeth; I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and has not denied my name (Revelation 3:7-8).

And God’s open door is exclusive. Witness the words of St. Paul in his epistle to the Romans, And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose… them he… called… he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified… Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?… For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (8:28-39). Ergo, God’s kingdom is restricted to those who are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28). The universalist doctrines of Baalianity are vanities taught by charlatans posing as ministers of the gospel who are, in reality, ministers of death. As St. Paul warned St. Timothy in his second epistle, For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables (4:3-4).

Affirmation of sound doctrine is a sign of being born again of the Holy Ghost because as our Lord so stated of the third person of the Trinity, Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth… (St. John 16:13). And where do we find sound doctrine one might ask? The apostle Paul tells us in II St. Timothy, All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works (3:16). It does not take a degree in rocket science to understand that last statement and only the willfully unbelieving would attempt to challenge it.

The open door policy of God stated in the affirmative is this: believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, repent of your sins through confession to God in his name, and then live your life in obedience to God’s word written. You ought to contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints: being ready at all times to give an answer to anyone for the faith which is within you. Live as you have been called of God and use the talents he has given you for his glory and your eternal good. Be faithful in your worship of the Godhead. Study the word so that you might better avoid the snares of our adversary, and that you might share it with others who are less-learned in a particular area. Be merciful and be forgiving. And finally, watch for the Lord’s return and pray always for your fellow saints in this life. There are of course others that I might have missed, but I would think that doing those aforementioned things would be paramount for any born-again Christian. So when it is time to depart the precincts of this life, you may rest assured that your trembling soul will be welcomed through God’s open door with the words, Well done thou good and faithful servant. Thou hast been faithful over a few things, I shall make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord (St. Matthew 25: 21b).

Let us pray,

F

ather we thank you for that blessed assurance which we have in thy Son, who hath redeemed us from death, hell and the grave; help us always to speak the truth of thy word written to all without fear of rejection; and guard our spirits, souls and bodies against the wiles of the devil; for these and other needful things we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·       One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·       All religions are not equal
  • ·       All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·       The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·       All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·       Good;
  • ·       Bad;
  • ·       Evil;
  • ·       Right;
  • ·       Wrong;
  • ·       Allah is the Devil;
  • ·       Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Trinity Joke[3]

Jesus said, “Whom do men say that I am?”

And his disciples answered and said, “Some say you are John the Baptist returned from the dead; others say Elias or other of the old prophets.”

And Jesus answered and said, “But whom do you say that I am?”

Peter answered and said, “Thou art the Logos[4], existing in the Father as His rationality and then, by an act of His will, being generated, in consideration of the various functions by which God is related to his creation, but only on the fact that Scripture speaks of a Father, and a Son, and a Holy Spirit, each member of the Trinity being coequal with every other member, and each acting inseparably with and interpenetrating every other member, with only an economic subordination within God, but causing no division which would make the substance no longer simple.”

And Jesus answering, said, “Say what?”[5]

[4]The Gospel of John identifies the Logos, through which all things are made, as divine (theos), and further identifies Jesus as the incarnation of the Logos. As the Logos, Jesus Christ is God in self-revelation (Light) and redemption (Life). He is God to the extent that he can be present to man and knowable to man. The Logos is God,[Jn 1:1] … Yet the Logos is in some sense distinguishable from God, for “the Logos was with God.”[Jn 1:1] God and the Logos are not two beings, and yet they are also not simply identical. … The Logos is God active in creation, revelation, and redemption. – Frank Stagg

[5]Did you ever wonder what difference the translation makes?  Consider while “the Word was God” is by far the most common English translation, non-Trinitarian groups such as the Jehovah’s Witnesses (in the New World Translation and their edition of the Emphatic Diaglott and Unitarians (in Thomas Belsham’s modification of William Newcome’s version) translate “the Word was a god.”
