Today was the Sixth Sunday after Sunday in the Endless Green Season.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Death

What sort of a lover am I to think so much about my affliction and so much less about hers? Even the insane call, ‘Come back,’ is all for my own sake. I never even raised the question whether such a return, if it were possible, would be good for her. I want her back as an ingredient in the restoration of my past. Could I have wished her anything worse? Having got once through death, to come back and then, at some later date, have all her dying to do over again? They call Stephen the first martyr. Hadn’t Lazarus the rawer deal?

Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

St. Matthew 7:19

And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

St. Luke 12:4-5

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or the new moon, or of the sabbath days.

Colossians 2:16

The Scriptures give us the only authentic portrait of Jesus Christ. If you want to know what Christ was like, study the Scriptures; that is where you find the real Jesus, and we are not at liberty to tamper with what we find there or to change it.

London is experiencing a splash of the acid test of diversity. That burning feeling on your face is the thrilling sensation of corrosive multiculturalism eating away at British communities. Banning guns, knives, drain cleaner, plungers and ostrich feathers wont address the problem. The fallacy of gun control, knife control and acid control is that inanimate objects dont kill people. Guns dont shoot themselves. Knives dont unsheathe in broad daylight and stab pedestrians. Bottles of acid dont knock on cars and then splash the occupants when they roll down the window. Immigration imported acid attacks to the UK the way that it imported gangs of Muslim men stabbing waitresses in eateries while shouting, This is for Allah”. Allah and acid [attacks] are both imports from the Muslim world.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 197-198, with the Collect first:

The Collect.

O

GOD, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man’s understanding; Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

As is oft the case, the Collect asks for help from the Holy Ghost to enter into our hearts that we might love God and, thus obtain His most excellent Gifts.  As imperfect creatures with free will, if we ask God for something, it tends to be what we want, not what we need.  He knows.  Thus, we need His Help in the form of the Holy Ghost.

The Epistle came from Paul’s letter to the Romans, beginning at the First Verse of the Sixth Chapter. Paul tells us that as we were baptized unto Jesus in life, so we are baptized unto his death.  We share His death on the Cross for our sins and by His death, our sin is dead; then as He was raised up, so are we.  It is intended the death we die unto sin is to be permanent and that we go forth and sin no more.  Yet, as long as we live here on earth, we sin.  Yet, as long as we live in Christ, we live.  Thus, we reckon ourselves “to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

K

NOW ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Today’s Holy Gospel started in the Fifth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning at the Twentieth Verse. Jesus tells his disciples, “Except your righteousness exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.”  Very worrisome indeed!  Scribes and Pharisees spent their entire lives acting the epitome of righteousness.  There is no way mere mortals could exceed their righteousness, or so it would seem.  Jesus goes on to tell us that not only would we not go to heaven if we commit murder, but we are in danger of the same judgment of we are angry without just cause.  If that were not worrisome enough, we are in danger of hell-fire if we call one another a fool!  Let not the night fall on discord with your family and friends, your neighbors in the Christian sense of The Word.  The text following asks us to do our best to follow Jesus and in return, his sacrifice will serve to set aside the just judgment and we shall be accounted as righteous before God.

J

ESUS said unto his disciples, Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt do no murder; and whosoever murdereth shall be in danger of the judgment: but I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell-fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

nd Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. 2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.  3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: 5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.  6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.  8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper? 10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground. 11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand; 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.  13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. 15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.  16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. (Genesis 4:1-16)

This is an account which hails back to the dawn of time and the beginning of the generations of the human race. It is taken from a Book of the Bible called ‘Genesis’, and appropriately so for genesis is a word meaning origin or beginning.

When the name of Cain is uttered, and seldom is it uttered, what thoughts are evoked by its mention?

No thoughts of virtue or loveliness, but thoughts of murderous treachery. Cain was a treacherous murderer of the worst kind. He murdered his own brother and he did so over jealous outrage of a religious nature. Some of our most destructive wars have had false religion as their cause.

When a young high school scholar, one of my favorite poems was one by Alfred Lord Tennyson entitled “Charge of the Light Brigade”. The poem was based on a true account of a meaningless but courageous charge of Britain’s best Brigade during the Crimean War.

The order to charge was recklessly given by Lord Cardigan without full knowledge of battlefield intelligence. But the Light Brigade responded to the order without question – a trait that would become us as Christians in obedience to God.

Here are the first three verses from that poem:

Half a league, half a league,

Half a league onward,

All in the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!

“Charge for the guns!” he said:

Into the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred.

” Forward, the Light Brigade!”

Was there a man dismay’d?

Not tho’ the soldier knew

Someone had blunder’d:

Theirs not to make reply,

Theirs not to reason why,

Theirs but to do and die:

Into the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,

Cannon to left of them,

Cannon in front of them

Volley’d and thunder’d;

Storm’d at with shot and shell,

Boldly they rode and well,

Into the jaws of Death,

Into the mouth of Hell

Rode the six hundred.

Cardigan was no man of divine perfection. He was a manmade lord and not the Lord of Heaven and earth. Yet, the Light Brigade responded precisely as they should have. It is not the soldier’s duty to question why, in the heat of battle, but rather to obey immediately. It is a sad sequel to history that only 56 of these brave six hundred survived the charge.

The War in which this event occurred was the Crimean War – one of the most bloody of contest since the battles of Genghis Khan and Tamerlane. The war occurred between the western European Powers and Russia from 1853 to 1856. The results, after needless loss of many lives, was a token victory for the Western Powers ceding the Holy Land to the Roman Church for oversight.

What was the spark that ignited the fervor of war?

Hostilities had been building in the Holy Land over the oversight of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. At the time, the Eastern Orthodox Church had oversight of the building and grounds.

A leak developed in the roof of the structure and water was threatening to damage the interior of the structure. The Roman Catholic church made known their intentions to make repairs to the roof which would require a thin sheet of copper about the size of a common page of notebook paper. The Orthodox Church refused to allow it since they feared the process would allow Rome to lay claim to the Holy Sepulchre. Rance intereceded on behalf of Rome. Russian dispatched an Army Division to the Danube to prevent France and Rome from gaining the right to repair the roof.

Great Britain was allied with France. Hostilities broke out resulting in many useless deaths. The only good that came of the war was the services of the angelic Florence Nightingale in treating the wounded of both sides on the battlefield.

Why would I relate such historical facts of war in a sermon?

I tell you this story so you can better understand the full impact of Cain’s evil intentions and motives. Nothing has changed in the heart of fallen man since the beginning. Selfishness and jealousy are at the heart of personal, as well as national, warfare.

When Eve conceived her first son, Cain (possession), she considered this to be the man who would redeem the sins of his parents as promised in Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her Seed; He shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His heel.”

The seed of Satan, whose head would be crushed by her seed seemed to be fulfilled to Eve in her firstborn. “I have gotten a man from the LORD

When Abel was born a few minutes later, there was no particular or gratified response from Eve other than to call him Abel (or breath). Just a breath, whereas Cain was a POSSESSION! But Abel had received the ‘breath of life’ and Cain was of a different nature.

Abel was a Godly son and a prophet of the Lord. Christ makes reference to this fact in Matthew 23: 34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: 35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar

2…And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

Why would Cain’s offering not be accepted. He did offer it with a good heart….didn’t he? No! He did not! He knew that a Lamb had to die to make a covering of his parents’ nakedness – Gen 3: 21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

A sacrifice represents an offering to cover our sins and weaknesses, but Cain’s was totally unacceptable and he knew it.

We read in Hebrews, Chapter 9: 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, 20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. 21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Furthermore, the source of Cain’s offering was a cursed source: Gen 3:  17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: CURSED IS THE GROUND for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

So, please, do not mimic modern preachers and excuse Cain for his goodwill. He had none. His self-righteousness was evidenced by his not feeling a need to make a worthy sacrifice for sin. He is much like most modern Christians of today.

So out of jealousy, Cain murdered his brother – his only brother.

I witnessed a few years ago a famous evangelist and false prophet, saying that he would kill all those who objected to his brand of false preaching by mowing them down with a machine gun. See how false religion and false motives can incite us to evil? After being called on the subject, he claimed that he meant a Holy Ghost machine gun; but biblical evidence does not suggest that there is any such weapon of the Holy Ghost!

The blood of Abel cried to the Lord from the ground. When our bodies die, we still exist…the part that makes us who we are … our souls, our spirits. This part is indestructible for it is the essence of US. And this part of us will live forever, either in the bliss of Heaven, or in the eternal fires of Hell. “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” Eccl 12:7 (KJV)

What makes you different from Cain?

Do you offer to God a proper sacrifice of mere possessions? Or do you claim the blood of His Son, Jesus, as HIS redeeming offering. The blood of goats or lambs will not avail. They were mere foreshadows of the guiltless sacrifice to come.

Heb 9:11  But Christ, having come a High Priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands (that is to say, not of this building), 12 neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood, He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. 13 For if sprinkling the unclean with the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who 14through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Our pitiful claims to live for God are revealed as wretched rags and odorous garments by the evidence of the fruit of our works. If we love God and His Creation, we will obey Him and listen to His Voice. And when we fail and sin, we must confess and repent. We must claim the blood of the innocent Lamb shed from before the foundations of the world as our sacrifice, not the mere works of our hands. Regardless the good we do for others, without the Love of Christ, it is a perishable and stinking ointment. Only His righteousness will avail in the dark and cloudy day. Here is hope from the words of the prophet: “For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out. 12 As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.”  Ezekiel 34:11-12

If you know not the voice of the Shepherd when He calls, how will He find you? Will he, too, recognize your prayer of bleating?

Study to make your salvation sure. Amen!

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Todays sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly  contained in the forewords above.

Consider these words from the Collect, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass mans understanding; Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire

We acknowledge God will give those who love Him more good than they can imagine, let alone ask for.  But, first you have to love Him.  So, what should we ask for?  The Holy Ghost to enter in to our hearts so we might truly love Him.  If we do, more good will come to us than we can even imagine or hope for. The Holy Ghost is a key element of love, without Him we cannot even love Him. If we cannot love others, how can we love Him who we have not seen? He gives us far more love than we can possibly deserve.

That is the great and wonderful news about following our Lord. He has love for the entire world, if they would turn from their sinful ways and follow Him. This is the message we are bringing to the world. God loved us so much that He was willing to sacrifice His Son on the cross to die for us, so we and all who believe on Him might have everlasting life.  This is truly the Good News, for we were once condemned to hellfire, but now through our Lords sacrifice are going to be allowed to enter into heaven, though we are imperfect creatures.

We are imperfect creatures, created with free will by a Perfect Being.  To get into Heavens Gate, we need be accounted as perfect before the Judge.  That requires a bit of an accounting irregularity, to account imperfection as perfection.  And that is exactly what Jesus death on the cross did for us. It allows us imperfect creatures accounted as perfect before the great Judge, Our Father in heaven.

So, what does the Collect counsel, ask for the Holy Ghost to enter into our hearts that we might get more than we can desire!  Jesus!  Jesus is that accounting irregularity. He can give us his guidance and grace via the Holy Ghost, to make us better men and women of the Lord. By His Sacrifice, made one time, for all mankind, for all time, we are accounted as perfect by His Faith and Action.  Thus, through His Faith and His Action, we attain life everlasting. That eternal life doesnt start when you die either! Starting today, you dont have to wait until you die to benefit from your immortality.

In fact, God would prefer you to start acting like you will live forever right now.  Thus, decisions you make, actions you take will be with the long term view of eternity!  Versus our rather usual shortsighted short term view, we must think in the terms of the big picture, not the tiny speck in the picture. Think of the clear vision of the big picture and not just the small, close in picture.  We must keep focused on the big picture, touching down at Heavens Gate. To get to that touchdown point, we have to align our actions in the pattern of life with Gods Word, make our actions consistent with our stated belief in Gods Word. Like flying, this will require a lot of adjustment. Think of how your actions will impact you, your family and others down the road, before acting and make the necessary adjustments.  The Holy Ghost can provide the inspiration and guidance we need to think through our actions. We just need to listen to Him at the moment when we need to act and remind ourselves that our future will be better if we listen to the Holy Ghost rather than ourselves.  We have to think of ourselves as a part of Gods much bigger and larger picture, and act to the best of our abilities and with the guidance of the Holy Ghost as a positive aspect of that larger picture.

In todays Epistle, St. Paul says as Jesus Christ died and rose again, so too should we die to our sins and rise again in a better state. He uses this metaphor to describe both our life here on earth, renewed through the death of the old man to the new, and to describe our life in Heaven from here on Earth. When we die here on Earth, we will be resurrected in heaven with our Lord, free from our mortal and corruptible body, to our new and immortal state.

And as he says, as death has no dominion over Jesus Christ, so too shall it have no more dominion over us. For by His death and resurrection, He has paid the wages for our sin, which as St. Paul says in Romans is death. His death has paid for our sins, so we might be accounted as perfect to get into heaven. We cannot be worthy on our own to get into heaven, but for the Grace of God, sending his Son Jesus to die for our sins, we will be able to get into heaven. This is the greatest miracle of our Lord Jesus Christ. He accounts us imperfect creatures as perfect, so we can get into heaven.

The resurrection truly is the greatest miracle Jesus performed. Because before He came and died for our sins, we could not get into heaven on our own and in fact still cannot. It is by Gods Grace, that He sent His only begotten son, that we should not perish, but have everlasting life. This is truly an amazing miracle, and I find myself still amazed every time I think of it. How we poor sinful creatures who could not make it to heaven on our own, have had our wages of sin paid by our Lords death upon the Cross.

As imperfect creatures, immortal or not, we make mistakes.  One to avoid is being madat ones fellow creatures, particularly family and friends.  We pick the most illogical reasons to be mad, the word chosen rather than angry.  Looked at logically, as God does, we need to solve the issue, kiss and make up, and do it before the sun sets on our anger.  Never part in anger.  One of you may not come back.  We must put aside our often foolish and angry thoughts and not act upon them, but rather have Christly thoughts and act upon those. Remember that before you are angryat a friend, relative, acquaintance, or stranger. We must not let anger and other irrational emotions such as fear get the best of us; but rather think calmly and figure out the best way to handle whatever situation we are in without losing control of our emotions. How do we do this? The clear solution is to pray to God and ask for His Help in bridling our tongue and have it be a reasonable tool rather than a tool of anger and deceit! And to also remember this every time we are in a moment of heated emotion.

When Jesus gave His Life for us, He did it knowing we would fail to follow in perfection, but fully aware some would follow to the best of their ability. We must get back up after we make our mistakes and continue on trying the best we can to follow Him. That is all He asks, do your best.  Even Saint Paul had trouble following our Lord, but he kept trying and doing his real best not to make the same mistake again.  Doing your best is not the same as saying you are doing your best.

There are none so deaf as those who will not hear.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Sixth Sunday after Trinity

23 July 2017

Psalms 111 • Isaiah 57:13b-19 • Acts 11:1-18

The Sixth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

O

GOD, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass mans understanding; Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Here are some questions that arise from our readings today.

  1. How do we get to know and understand God?

  2. How does God help us to understand why we should worship him?

  3. Why are we to praise the Lord?

  4. Who can receive the salvation of God?

  5. How do they hear this salvation of God?

  6. Why should we take this message to the people?

Our first two questions can be answered in the passage from Psalm 111.  In verses 2-7 we see both questions addressed.

P

raise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation.

2 The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.

3 His work is honourable and glorious: and his righteousness endureth for ever.

4 He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.

5 He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant.

6 He hath shewed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.

7 The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure.

  1. How do we get to know and understand God?

  2. How does God help us to understand why we should worship him?

The way we understand and know God is by observing his great works, the great things that are created and are around us to see.  Over the past 50 years or so there has been a change in the understanding of origin of life.  Instead of the wholesale belief of Darwinian creation, scientist have concluded that there isn’t enough proof to settle the theory.  Darwins theory has been examined and found wanting.  Ironically, the greatest believers in Darwins theory are found in the educational fields and journalist/pseudo-scientist of popular TV.  Here we find a group of people who have more faith in a failed system than any other save communism.  That is a whole other story there.  In spite of human arrogance, one must seek the scripture to find the answers to those first two questions.  God is full of compassion. (understanding the plan of Salvation is a start), God is revealing to his people his great power. He shows it in his righteousness, his keeping of his covenant, and the surety of his truth and judgment.

  1. Why are we to praise the Lord?  Verse Ten sums this up very neatly.

8 They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.

9 He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.

10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

Now we come to perhaps the most important aspect of living a Christian life. These are questions that sometimes dog a new believer. They dont know what to do with their new found faith, and yet they instinctively know that they should share it with others. So we may ask the following questions and can find the answers neatly summed up in todays scripture readings.

We find answers to these questions in our reading from Acts 11:1-18.

  1. Who can receive the salvation of God?

All who call upon the Lord. They must repent of their sins, turn from their wicked ways and seek to live a holy life in the Lord.

  1. How do they hear this salvation of God?

“…Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

All believers, in one way or another, are obligated to tell others of Jesus and His salvation. We can do it by example, we can do it by the Word, we can do it by gentle conversation. But we must be prepared to be able to “…But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear…

  1. Why should we take this message to the people?

“…Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God…?”

In this last verse of our scripture reading today {above}, is the whole summation of what, why, and how we are to share Gods message to the world. We do not have to go to Africa, Asia, or India to share this message. We can go across the road, down the lane, at the store, at school, or the social center. Anywhere we met people, interact with them can be our mission field. Understand that at all times people are watching you to see how you react to good and bad things that happen to you or those you love. As Peter wrote in his first epistle; {1Peter 3:15-16}

15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

In conclusion, we find answers to these questions expressed in the passage from the Psalms and from the Acts of the Apostles, while in fact you can find this message through out the Old and New Testament. God has asked us to seek those who are to be saved. Just by our daily lives we can tell people about our Awesome God. We can share where ever we meet people who are searching, hurting, or looking for the Way.  As an interesting note, we see in the account of Peter, that those who were responsible for the church at Jerusalem backed off confronting Peter. He told them what happened, they wisely fell silent. Then they praised God for the work He was doing in the world. This was not going to be just a Jewish faith, this was going to be a faith for the salvation of the world.

18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

Let us pray:

O

God, who has prepared for those who love you such good things as pass mans understanding; Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Chris our Lord. Amen

O

GRACIOUS Father, we humbly beseech thee for thy holy Catholic Church; that thou wouldst be pleased to fill it with all truth, in all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in anything it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, establish it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of him who died and rose again, and ever liveth to make intercession for us, Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord. Amen.

O

God, who art the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom; Defend us Thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in Thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

G

ive us light in the night season, we beseech Thee, O Lord, and grant that our rest may be without sin, and our waking to Thy service; that we may come in peace and safety to the waking of the great day; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

T

he grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Acts 11:1-17

A

nd the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.  2 And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,  3 Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.  4 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying,  5 I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:  6 Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw four-footed beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.  7 And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.  8 But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.  9 But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.  10 And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven.  11 And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me.  12 And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house:  13 And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;  14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.  15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning  16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.  17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

Dead and Alive

Romans 6:3-11

Sixth Sunday after Trinity

July 23, 2017

The Book of Romans was written about 58 Anno Domine by the Apostle Paul.  This does not mean the book consists of Pauls ideas and speculations about God.  It means it consists of Gods word to us, given through the Apostle as he was moved by the Holy Ghost (2 Pet. 1:21).  Like all of Pauls writings, Romans is a book of practical doctrine.  In other words, it presents the basic doctrines of the Christian faith, and how they relate to practical every day life.  It has truly been said that Romans encapsulates the entire Bible, and that to understand Romans is to understand the entire revelation of God, and how to live accordingly.

One of the primary doctrines taught in Romans is the doctrine of Justification by Grace through Faith.  Justice means to give people what they deserve.  If we think of it in terms of a courtroom, justice means the guilty are punished and the innocent go free.  Or it means the injured party receives payment, and the injuring party pays.  In our relationship with God, we are the injuring parties, and God is the injured party.  And one of the great teachings of the Bible is how God moves us from the moral necessity of paying for our sins, while remaining the just and good God that He is.  Justification is God being able to treat you as though you deserve His love and blessings.  To justify you, God must move you from being rightfully condemned for your sins, to being regarded by Him as righteous.

This has been the primary topic in the first five chapters of Romans, and the main point of the discussion is obvious, the only way we can be justified before God is by a special act of God.  It is not something we can accomplish for ourselves.  It is something God must do for us out of His pure grace.  Therefore the Bible talks about justification by grace.  Romans 3:24 and 25 tells us we are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His bloodfor the remission of sins.”  In other words, we are saved by grace, which includes the whole scope of Gods redeeming work in us, and especially refers to the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, who died for our sins.  In grace, God sent Christ.  In grace God enables us to understand that He died for our sins.  In grace God enables us to believe in Christ.  In grace God enables us to trust the work of Christ to justify us.  Trusting Christ is called faith.  Thus, we have recounted the great central truth of our salvation, which is stated so well in Ephesians 2: 8 & 9; by grace through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.

After coming to understand Justification by grace through faith, a Christian naturally wants to know how this doctrine applies to daily life.  We know we are forgiven.  We know we are going to Heaven “In the Sweet By and By.We need to know what that has to do with the not so sweet here and now.  In other words, what does a justified person do?  How do I live in light of my justification?  How do I live like a Christian?

The Bibles answer is very simplebelieve what the Bible teaches, and do what it says.  Paul makes the point that justified people are different people.  Were a new kind of people, and we live a new kind of life.  In Romans 6:2, he describes us as being dead to sin.

Paul illustrates this with baptism.  In 6:4 he says we are buried with Christ in baptism.  Many believe this verse refers to immersion.  They believe going under the water symbolises the death and burial of your former life.  Being raised out of the water symbolises your resurrection to a new kind of life in Christ.  But the meaning of this verse is not found in the water, it is found in the effect.  Baptism unites us to Christ in such a way that we died with Him and rose with Him.” As He died to sin, so do we; as He rose to righteousness and glory, so do wewrote Dr. Charles Hodge in his monumental commentary on Romans.

The idea of being dead to sin permeates this chapter.  Its logic goes something like this.  There was a time when you lived for yourself.  You decided what your goals, values, and moral choices were.  You chose them according to what seemed best for you, according to your desires at the time.  You may have chosen good and decent things, most of the time, but the point is, you chose them rather than letting God choose them.  You have, as we pray in the General Confession of Morning and Evening Prayer, followed too much the devices and desires your own heart.

You have heard me symbolise your heart as a Throne on which the Lord of your life sits and rules.  There was a time when you were on that throne.  The choices and rulings you made are almost irrelevant, because, like Eve, you had placed yourself in charge instead of putting God in charge and trusting Him to make the right and best decisions and rulings for you. This may not sound so bad, but it is the very essence of sin. It is to be like a child who will not eat the wholesome food you worked to buy and cook for him.  Rather than trust your judgement, he wants to decide what to eat.  It is to be like an employee who wants to decide when and how he will do his job rather than going by the company rules.  It is to be like a soldier who wants to decide what kind of weapons he will use, and how he will deploy himself in battle rather than being part of the team and strategy of the captain.  It is to be like a sheep who goes its own way instead of following the Shepherd.  What do we call such sheep?  We call them strays,” and our Lord Himself uses them to illustrate the essence of sin.  We even use them that way when we confess, We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep.”

In Christ you have decided to no longer be a stray.  You have died to that way of life.  You have crucified it.  You have crucified those desires.  The Bible says, “our old man is crucified with Him [Christ], that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.”  It is no longer your life orientationIt is not the direction and goal of your life.  Even more, you are buried in Christs burial.  You are secluded away from that way of life of sin as a corpse is sealed away from the rest of the world.  But Christ did not remain in the grave, and neither do we.  He rose from the dead into a new and glorified existence, as He had before He took flesh upon Himself and came to earth.  In Him we are risen from the dead into a new and glorified life.  In this new life, God is our life orientation.  His will controls the direction of our lives. Our desire and goal is to live for Him alone in full love and obedience to His every commandment.

It is my belief that the average Christian today misses this radical change and break from sin.  We want to go to Heaven.  We want to do religious things, and we want to refrain from the big sins,”  but we dont make much effort to really die to sin, or to crucify sinful attitudes and values that still live in us.  We cling to them because we love them.  Were are like sheep who live on the fringes of the flock.  We dont want to stray too far away.  We like to keep the flock and the Shepherd in sight.  But we dont want to be too close either.  When the Shepherd calls us away from a rock, we decide to look it over more closely.  When the Shepherd calls us to the fold at night, we wonder what it would be like to spend the night in the wilderness.  Beware, beloved.  Beware of such attitudes.  Such sheep may not die to sin, but they may die to wolves.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Sixth Sunday after Trinity

Do you think there is anything too hard for God? Can you imagine anyone saying there is? What would you say to them if you heard such, especially coming from a fellow Christian? And last but certainly not least, are you guilty of such as well? Food for thought to be sure. Still, if we are truthful with ourselves we would have to admit that there have been times in our lives when God may have seemed distant and detached from us. Every major figure from Abraham to the apostles had to wrestle with their lagging faith in the LORD. And if that was so for them, then it will be true for us.

Throughout the pages of Scripture we are presented with lessons on Gods power to act within our frame of reference. In the case of Noah and his family, God spared them in the ark on account of Noahs faithfulness even as he inundated the earth via the great flood which extinguished the lives of the unrighteousness (Genesis 6:1-22; 7:1). As the apostle Peter once wrote, The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished (II St. Peter 2:9). God had Noah build the ark in the presence of his ungodly neighbors whom he preached to until the day he went into the ark. Unfortunately for them, they rejected his ministry and continued on in their sinful ways, as our Lord so noted, For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, unto the day that Noe entered the ark. And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away… (St. Matthew 24:38-39). And St. Peter confirmed the same when he wrote, [For God]… spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly (II St. Peter 2:5).

In Genesis (18:1-16) we learned Abrahams wife Sarah laughed at the notion she was going to bear a son in her advanced age. She doubted Gods ability even if it was for but a moment. And Gods correction was swift and to the point when he replied, Is anything too hard for the LORD (Genesis 18:14)? In the preceding chapter of Genesis, Abraham was called of God to become a father of many nations (Genesis 17:5), principally to be father of the Hebrews who would descend from his son Isaac (Genesis 17:19): a miracle child born to parents well beyond their childbearing years (Genesis 18:1-15).

Isaacs second son, Jacob, remained faithful to God while his brother Esau did not (Genesis 27:34-35; 28:10-15). It was on account of his obedience Jacob received a multitude of blessings from the LORD inclusive of which was the restoration of his son Joseph after many years of separation believing that he was dead (Genesis 45:24-28; 46:29-30). Joseph provided protection and care for his brethren and they grew into a great nation within the bounds of the kingdom of Egypt (Genesis 50:15-21; Exodus 1:7).

Moses was called of God to deliver the children of Israel from their bondage in Egypt (Exodus 3:1-10). The whole story of Moses bears the hand of God present all the way through from his birth and adoption by the daughter of Pharaoh to the very end when God took him. Moses was the lawgiver, the scribe, the administrator and shepherd for his people through the days of God’s judgment on the Egyptians, the rebellion of the people at Kadesh-barnea, and their various difficulties in the wilderness as part of that forty year trek they were compelled to make before entering the land of promise. Gods hand preserved and guided, punishing the wicked and strengthening the faithful. Afterwards, Joshua was called to take up the mantle of Moses and lead the people to take hold of the land which the LORD had promised their forefathers that he would give to them (Deuteronomy 31:14, 23).

One of the judges called of God to administer over the people was Gideon. His miraculous victory over the Midianites using only a small number of men is a testament of what God can do if he wills (Judges 8:9-23). The last judge over Israel was Samuel who restored the priesthood of the LORD and anointed the first two kings over the people. His life, from his remarkable birth, to his return in the spirit to prophesy before King Saul before his ill-fated last stand at Mount Gilboa speaks of Gods power and ability.

There are other examples within the pages of Scripture that are worthy of examination such as David, Elijah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel as well as the record of our Lords earthly ministry, and those of the apostles. For through that record, we are presented with the power of God to act in furtherance of his will and pleasure on behalf of his creation. From the pages of the Holy Bible we are taught authoritatively that God is indeed able. He is not thwarted by the works of man or those of our adversary, the Devil. God is the Creator, the Sustainer, the Redeemer. He is Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. He is Love, he is Righteous, he is Holy, and he is Just. No prayer of his own is left unheard, neither are the tears of his own overlooked. No cry of anguish by his people will be ignored, and no injustice to his own will be given a pass. The might, power and majesty of the Godhead will be made known and his own shall be provided for.

Sometimes people in dire straits will say, Oh thats not something that God can do”, or “Thats too big for even God to handle.Really? Hear now the words of Moses which he wrote in the Book of Genesis: In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light (1:1-3). Read them again and then think on what they are communicating to us. For within these opening verses of the Bible, we have in mere words an illustration of Gods awesome power and majesty. So much Bible doctrine stems from this event as we have the sovereign nature of God revealed in very clear and unambiguous language.

In chapter four of the Book of Revelation, the apostle John had been called up to the very throne room of God where he witnessed several great and marvelous events (v. 1). First of all, he witnessed the beauty of the place (vv. 2-3). Then there were the personalities which were present around the throne and all of them praising God and bowing before him (vv. 4-9). He heard the four beasts, or living creatures, praising God and saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come (v. 8). He witnessed the twenty four elders who also lifted their voices in praise saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created (vv. 10-11).

God in his infinite wisdom, and for his eternal purpose has created the earth and all that therein is or ever has been. If we accept him for who he says he is, then we ought not deny his power to act in our lives as he sees fit. We must remember that God acts in the best interest of his own. That does not mean that we will not face trials and tribulations. But in Gods good time, he will see to our needs and maybe even our desires as well. A few years back, a Florida woman was injured when she fell in her home and had to undergo surgery to realign the vertebrae in her neck. The woman had previously suffered a neck injury years before which rendered her blind. Nevertheless, as she returned to consciousness following the operation on her neck, she realized to her surprise – and that of her doctor – that her eyesight had been restored. She immediately gave God the glory. The unintended consequence of her fall led to the restoration of her sight. The Bible tells us that Gods ways are mysterious and wondrous. How very, very true.

Now consider our own conduct. Do we count our blessings when they come and give God the praise for his divine work in our lives? How many times in the past did we receive the gifts of God in ways we had not anticipated? God does indeed provide and we in turn ought to praise him for that provision and not be afraid to ask for such as if it were a burden on him, or something that might be too difficult. We ought to ask but not ask amiss. We ought to petition but not become impatient. We ought to wait upon the LORD and not act as unruly and spoiled children: who having asked, now demand that their desires be fulfilled at that moment. On the contrary, let us be patient and wait upon the LORD. Let us then seek his will for us in all our requests and believe that he can act, and that he is indeed able.

Let us pray,

F

ather, grant us patience to accept what you will do in your own time, and, that whatever it is, to know that you have our best interests at heart; for these things we ask in Christs holy name. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.
