Today is the Twenty-Third Sunday after Trinity in the Endless Green Season, the next to the last one this year.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

For many are called, but few are chosen.

Matthew 22:14

Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching…

Luke 12:37

God would not have his people to be dismayed at the signs of heaven, to reverence the stars as deities, nor to frighten themselves with any prognostifications grounded upon them. For the stars in their courses fight not against any that are at peace with God.

Matthew Henry

17th and 18th century English pastor and author

According to the New Age theology, any and all religious practices and beliefs are fully acceptable, no matter how bizarre or incredible. What the New Age does aggressively object to, however, is the suggestion that any one religion, faith, or set of moral and ethical rules is the way. This seems at first glance tolerant; but in practice, it is diabolically clever and disingenuous. It portrays the Christian who professes belief in Jesus Christ as the way of salvation as intolerant and biased. The same is true for the Jew who refuses to accord witchcraft manuals equal in standing with the books of the Old Testament. An alleged doctrine of universality turns out to be a wicked strategy to extinguish the world’s only major religions that believe in a loving, personal God.

Allahu Akbar

You hear it everywhere these days… To understand the violent history of “Allahu Akbar”, let’s climb into a time machine and go back to the year 628 and to a place that will one day be known as Saudi Arabia…We’re in Khaybar… a desert oasis maintained by the Jews… If you want to choke off major trade routes, you go after an oasis. And that’s what a cult leader whose followers today terrorize the world by attacking its travel routes, airline hijackings, pirates preying on ships, train and bus bombs, was doing. Muslims call what happened next, the “Battle of Khaybar”. Like most Muslim battles, it was a treacherous ambush and a massacre. And it helps explain why there are no Jews in Saudi Arabia today. Nor do Muslims regret this act of ethnic cleansing. Instead they celebrate it. Muslims still threaten Jews by chanting, “Khaybar, Khaybar ya Yahud.” “Remember Khaybar, Jews, Mohammed’s Army Will Return.” And “Allahu Akbar”? That’s what Mohammed shouted as he realized that his surprise attack had been successful… He boasted that any nation attacked by Muslims would suffer a similar fate. And then he “had their warriors killed, their offspring and women taken as captives … That’s where “Allahu Akbar” originated. And that’s why Muslims still shout it at terrorist attacks. Allahu Akbar does not mean “God is Great.” It means “Allah is Greater”. What was Allah greater than at Khaybar? Allah was greater than the religion of the Jews because Mohammed was able to defeat them. In Islam, a religious war is also a religious test. Muslim victories demonstrate the supremacy of Allah… “Allahu Akbar” originated with Mohammed’s attack on the Jews of Khaybar. When Muslim terrorists shout it today, they are declaring that they are about to prove Allah’s superiority by killing non-Muslims… This is Islam. This is what it was in 628. That’s what it is today…“Allahu Akbar” isn’t something [a Muslim] happens to say while killing you. It’s why he’s killing you.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The propers for the Twenty-Third Sunday after Trinity can be found on Page 222-223:

The Twenty-Third Sunday after Trinity

The Collect.

O

 GOD, our refuge and strength, who art the author of all godliness; Be ready, we beseech thee, to hear the devout prayers of thy Church; and grant that those things which we ask faithfully we may obtain effectually; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle for today came from Saint Paul’s letter to the Philippians beginning at the Seventeenth Verse of the Third Chapter.  Writing to the church in Philippia, Paul asks them to watch whom they follow, “For many walk, of whom I have told you often, … that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.”  He reminds us of our ultimate goal, of that which for us should have the principal place in our minds, “For our citizenship is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: who shall change the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed unto the body of his glory, according to the working whereby he is able even to subject all things unto himself.”

B

rethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) For our citizenship is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: who shall change the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed unto the body of his glory, according to the working whereby he is able even to subject all things unto himself.

The Holy Gospel came from the Twenty-Second Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew beginning at the Fifteenth Verse.  Like many people today, the Pharisees took much comfort in the fact that they followed The Law to The Letter.  Not looking to what the law was trying to get them to do and to think, but rather following The Law to The Letter.  Jesus presented a threat to their very existence, because he asked the people to do what God willed, not to simply cook their food a certain way, or turn down an invitation to a luau because they served roast pig and drank Bud.  Being good followers of The Law to The Letter, they sought to trip Him up.  “…they sent out unto Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, ‘Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?”  Having for so long lived The Law to The Letter, believing The Kingdom of God would be of this world, they could not see the obvious response.  They were absolutely floored when Jesus said, “Shew me the tribute money.”  With no thought of the answer, “they brought unto him a penny.”  Jesus asked them, “Whose is this image and superscription?”  Again playing the straight man, walking into the trap they had set for themselves, they answered, “Caesar’s.”  Driving his point straight into their hearts, he told them, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.”

This ended the encounter, “they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.”

T

hen went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Cæsar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Cæsar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Cæsar the things which are Cæsar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s. When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

The Gospel

T

hen went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way. (Matt 22:15-22)

The Collect prays we ask out of faith that such petitions might be granted. But is it possible to ask out of greed or jealousy as did the Pharisees and Herodians in our Gospel today?  Whether they knew it or not, their prayers of deception were made to God (God the Son). The Herodians were those who supported the Roman puppet king, Herod. But the Pharisees were vehemently opposed to Roman rule. How could these two be allied against Christ. I believe it is because both considered Christ a greater threat to the Roman rule (Herodians), or the religious life (Pharisees) of Israel. Both wanted, above all else to preserve their power over the people. But Christ came as the great Liberator. This, they could not bear – and neither can the larger religious institutions, or governmental powers, tolerate Christ today.

As our Epistle so well points out, we have our citizenship in heaven, not in the dirty and political premises of this world. Our motives should never be centered on material prosperity, but spiritual enlightenment.

We read how those wicked men of the Pharisees conspire with their mortal enemies, the Herodians, to entangle Christ in His words and ministry.

Strange how enemies can unite against One they consider of greater threat. They fear that One who speaks truth cannot be bested by those whose works are fleshly.

They fear their little positions of authority and seek to murder Him to whom ALL truth and authority belongs.

It is a deaf EAR they turn to the Gospel of Christ. They only seek something of which to charge Him or of which to complain. They have witnessed more of His miracles of healing, restoration to life, and acts of mercy than most of His own disciples, yet, they fail to believe – WHY?

It is because they refuse to believe!

Such contentious ones have not the Mind and love of Christ in their hearts.

True love and mercy are not divisible. That Love of Christ which we have received is authenticated by that same love and compassion we show to one another.

            Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus (Phil 2:5)

Where the love of Christ is, there can be no division. Christ is not divided against Himself! His Mind is also constant – the same yesterday, today, and forever.

They cunningly say to JesusMaster, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

            Like good politicians, these men will use deception, or even flattery,  to ensnare a good man.

We pay tribute today in the form of taxes. Taxes are essential to provide those limited government services necessary to ensure defense, order and a suitable environment for trade.  It is something we owe Caesar  if we are to live within the borders of his dominion.

If Christ insists that we pay tribute to Caesar, He will have lost the support of the people. But if He says that we should NOT, He incurs the wrath of Rome.

So how does Christ respond to these scoundrels?

But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

Christ never hesitated to call a spade a spade.

He was not very politically correct was He?

He then says: 19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. 20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? In Rome, Caesar’s money, inscribed with his image, was the coin of the realm. In England, it is the image of the Queen. In Denmark, it is the image of the King. In America, it may be George Washington, or Ben Franklin, or another of the Founding Fathers. The coin of the realm in worldly governments bears the image of the worldly ruler; however, are we not citizens of another kingdom. In the Kingdom of God, the coin of the realm bears the image of our Lord Jesus Christ – His visage and likeness. Do we bear a dual citizenship? Though we must remain IN the world, we are not to be part and party to it.

Ships are wonderful vessels constructed for the purpose of bearing great burdens of merchandise across the sea. They are, in fact, made to be in the sea. As long as they travel in the sea, all is well. But when the sea gets into the ship, tragedy stands at the door. Ships are like the church. The Church is made to season the world and to be a sweet savor to it; but when the world gets into the Church, it will lose its savor.

21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.

The image and superscription of God: The Christian disciple is as silver, purified seven times by the Refiner. He assumes the image and likeness of His Lord. The silver coin, once tamped by the authority of government, assumes the value that the authority assigns by his stamp. So, too, does the Christian assume the authority to teach the Word to all who will listen. The authority does not reside in the coin, or in the disciple, but the authorizing power. The value assigned to the coinage of Heaven is the outpoured blood of our Lord.

American coinage is the only in the world that has consistently appealed to the trust of God in its mintage. In God We Trust! In America, we the people are Caesar.

We set our rulers up, and we take them down by our exercise of the franchise. We can blame no one for the ungodliness of our rulers…. but ourselves. We will always get precisely the kind of ruler we deserve!

            22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way The Words of God confuse the learned and the deceitful. In His mouth there is no deceit nor shadow of turning.

Are we citizens of God’s Kingdom?

Are we stamped with His image of ownership and authority?

What must we render unto God to receive that title of coinage of the realm? All of our selves – our being and our daily currency should reflect His Image just as the coin of the nation represents the image and authority of that nation.

When men know you, may they also know Christ through you. I pray that the stamp of Christ is apparent upon all who are within range of my voice today.

Sermon – Rev Jack Arnold

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

The Twenty-Third Sunday after Trinity

The Collect.

O

 God, our refuge and strength, who art the author of all godliness; Be ready we beseech thee to hear the devout prayers of the Church; and grant that those things which we ask faithfully we may obtain; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Collect says Our God is the author of all perfection; we ask Him to be ready, to hear our sincere prayers: He may answer those things which are good for the Church and the world for which we ask and from His Grace we may receive those things which are good for us.  Left unsaid is that we must be ready to hear and act on His Word. In order to receive those things which are good for us, we must be ready and willing to have them. Which means opening our hearts up to the Holy Ghost and be performing actions which are consistent with Scriptures.

In the Epistle, St. Paul tells the Philippians to follow God and not be dependent on man, as so many in this country are now. The problem he explains with many, who claim they are followers of Christ, but don’t walk the walk, is they are selfish and only think of themselves. There are too many people around the world that think and act in this manner.  They have no desire to help others, and in fact have a desire to tear others down rather than lend them a helping hand. This is not a manner consistent with what Christ has taught us and violates the Summary of the Law, wherein it talks about loving our neighbor as ourselves. He warns them will lead them onto a path of doom and destruction.   Whereas if people would love their neighbor as themselves, it would lead them on a path to prosperity and eternal life. And also, he talks about how the enemies of Christ glory in our shame; this will be their undoing in the end also. It may benefit them for a short while here on Earth but in the end, it will lead them to their everlasting doom. We are not to worry, but rather lean on Our Lord, even in these times of trials and tribulations, some of which we have yet to face. We realize our citizenship is in heaven, for which we look to Our Saviour. If we are on the side of righteousness, of the Lord, of godliness, then who are we to fear?

Nobody; save a respectful fear of Our God.

We will not bow before the forces of darkness; but rather stand tall, equipped with the armor of light, the shield of truth, and the helmet of faith. We will give those in authority the respect that they are due as tradition, but we will not be dependent upon them for our every need and whim.  This is why those who seek to create a larger government are working on supplanting God’s authority over us. For if God is the authority, as He is; man has no power to determine what is right and what is wrong. Man is not responsible for his own power. This is why those who are seeking to enlarge their power over the people in this country are working on destroying the Church. Paul says in the end, these people’s efforts will be in vain and they will be destroyed, as much as they are attempting to destroy us here on Earth. We can be cheered up in these depressing times, knowing we are on the winning side for eternity. We are to turn to God; if we are to be dependent on anything, it must be God upon whom we are dependent, and not Man. Being dependent on man only leads to eternal death for us, but being dependent on God leads to eternal life for us. So, must we put our trust in God as our Eternal Navigator, our Guide throughout the rocky path of life. Returning to Him when we are lost, He will always guide us back to the straight and narrow path.

Which brings us to the point of the Gospel, in which Christ tells the Pharisees of how they are to deal with the problem of tribute to Caesar. They have no love for the Roman Government, as we have very little love for the swamp dwellers in our Government. However, Christ reminds them to separate their hatred of the government, and do the right thing. As we must give God His due (our worship and prayer), we must give the government their due (taxes, etc.), but this does not mean we treat the government as demi-gods, to put it one way, as politicians often think of themselves.  The government has to earn our respect, not the other way around, which too often it and the members in it forget this simple fact.

We are not to think of the government replacing God, but rather that God has granted the government their authority to govern, but not to supplant Him. His authority is where the government gets their authority, and will always be; whether they choose to recognize that or not, is up to them. That is what we pray for when we pray for the President, that he would recognize God’s authority and align his leadership with that of God’s will. The statists in this country believe the false lie that man can govern man without assistance from God or God’s authority. Governments which do not recognize this fact are in the end, doomed to fail. The history books are filled with pages of failed governments, all failed because they refused to recognize God’s rightful place as the source of their legal authority.

Jesus’ point is that we give them what they are owed, no more and no less.  The Pharisees were trying to trick Christ to say that you must honor one or the other, when you can do both.  We should be serving God and not man; that does not mean that we do not have to pay our dues to the government that rules us. It is only through God’s grace that he allows government to rule over man. The government we have was established with the recognition it serves at His pleasure. Its Declaration of Independence establishes people have rights endued them by their Creator, not the government. It is with the authority of the people that the government serves. It must exist to serve the people and God. It is not to be a self-licking ice cream cone. Jesus told us to feed the poor people, not create laws that took money from other people to do that purpose, of which he commanded us to do.

The Collect, Epistle and Gospel tie together, laying out, detailing and reinforcing the same message, ultimately.  We have to respect the authorities that govern us, no matter how we disagree or dislike them, and conduct ourselves like Christians. However, that does not mean that we replace the rule of God with the rule of Man. Man’s laws should merely be a restatement of God’s laws, not to replace God’s laws.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Twenty-Third Sunday after Trinity

Equality, not democracy, subtle difference

19 November 2017, AD

Psalm 8 • Isaiah 64 • Matthew 23:1-12

The Twenty-Third Sunday after Trinity

The Collect.

O

 God, our refuge and strength, who art the author of all godliness; Be ready we beseech thee to hear the devout prayers of the Church; and grant that those things which we ask faithfully we may obtain; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Matthew’s gospel is rather interesting.   As citizens of the United States, we have been taught and sometimes lead to believe that democracy is the best or truest form of government on earth at this time in history.  True raw democracy, {rule of the crowd [people] can lead to chaos}.  Now before you run out to find the highest tree branch and a fresh rope, let me explain what I mean.  Rule of the crowd {demos in Greek} has proved to be problematic in the past.  If you look at popular revolutions, whether it be the Peasant Revolt in Luther’s time, the Wat Tyler revolt in England, various other popular uprisings across history, chaos is the usual result.  Until order is restored wholesale slaughter takes place, no one is safe, all are targets, all are subject to suspicions that in many cases lead to execution, banishment, or both.

One of the greatest dangers of democracy is the eventual realization by those who vote that they have the ability to vote themselves perks and favors.  The issue then comes down to what is good for a nation or what is good for the individual.  Problem being, since man is totally depraved, born in sin, steeped in the desire to take care of all wants, herein begins the abuse of power.  Once an electorate understands the power of the ballot, they begin to vote in special benefits and privileges that are not necessarily good for all.  This is human nature at its worst.

So, what is one to do?   Well folks, this late in democratic history, it is too late to close the gate.  There is no desire to restrain oneself from getting all, whether from the government or from some other source.  A short review of the last 20 months of a rather brutal presidential champaign gives us a view to the future. With promises of “free” stuff to all who vote for one party or the other, the demos voted for the goodies.  Popular vote went to the party that promised the most free stuff.  Now, I am not trying to condemn one party over the other, I am pointing out why democracy as we know it is toxic.  It matters not which party promises the goodies, whether in tax write offs, credits, or out right “free” stuff, both parties are guilty as charged. They are both pandering to the voter who wants more and more from the government.

In our not too distant past, government was understood to protect us from outside {foreign} invaders, unfair trade practices, regulate standards {weights and measures}, coinage and very little else.   Over the last 150 years the desire of the public has slowly morphed from being reliant on God and god given talents, to being reliant on Government and government given goodies.   Shame on us.

Ok, enough shaming.  Now let us look at what Jesus taught us about hierarchy and rule of True government.  That being the Kingdom of God.

First off, Jesus points to those who make rules, but don’t live by them. The scribes and Pharisee, having the authority given by Moses, now centuries later, totally corrupting that authority. Think this not so?   Why did Moses not go into the Promised Land?  He disobeyed God.  He was still God’s appointed leader up and to the time for entering the Promised Land, but because he disobeyed God, he was not allowed to go in.  This did not condemn Moses to eternal hell, he is counted among the “great host of witnesses” in the book of Hebrews and elsewhere in the Bible.  But when God kept Moses on the border, letting him die there, He also would make this point with His Son Jesus.  Here in the passage from Matthew Jesus points out the corruption and failed faith of the scribes and Pharisee. He lists all the requirements that they placed on the regular folk, but not doing the same.  (Reminds me of Congress).  These learned men loved the limelight, they loved being given the places of honor, loved be recognized in the streets as wise and powerful. Here is where Jesus puts a full stop to this behavior.

“…But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren…”

Then Jesus goes farther, he gives us the true hierarchy of who we are as believers in Him:

“….Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted…”

An interesting side note to our friends on the high side of the Anglican expression:

And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

Before you jump to conclusions, this is in the context of leadership within the church/family of faith, not your earthly father, be he biological, foster, or adopted.  No when Jesus made this statement, he was indicating the excesses of the scribes, Pharisee, and others as to how they liked to be addressed in public.  So, to our high church Anglican associates, we are not to call our clergy “father”, Jesus makes that abundantly clear.

Now for the final somewhat harsh, {to us raised in an individualistic society},the kingdom of God is exactly that, a kingdom. NO ONE voted God into his kingship. By His very eternal nature, His being here before the world began, He being the creator of the creation, He is KING.

God the Son is referred to as King of kings and Lord of lords.  Again, a non-elected position.

It is hard for us stubborn humans to accede power to anyone else.  We are self-centered, born in sin, always seeking that which we want, not necessarily what we need, all activity that leads to chaos, hate, fear and confusion.  It is what we see in our secular world today.

Need more proof as to the warrant of authority from God?  How about the model prayer Jesus taught us through his disciples:

O

UR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

So, to conclude our lesson today, let us look again at these verses:

Our equality is based on our relationship to our Master, Jesus Christ. We are all equal under his care, we are to serve one another here on earth, we are to worship the Father who is in heaven, we are to be examples to the fallen world of what is means to be in Christ.

So instead of buying into the chaos driven democracy, the rule of the mob, we should live in the shadow of the Creator, He who called us to Himself, He who redeemed us by the Blood of His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

As the old familiar chorus reads, “…turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace…”.

B

ut be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. 9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

O

 LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.  9  O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth.  (Psalm 8:1,9)

Let us pray:

O

h most merciful Father aid us in our daily journey, lest, through our own frailty, or the temptations which encompass us, we be drawn again into sin, vouchsafe us, we beseech thee, the direction and assistance of thy Holy Spirit. Reform whatever is amiss in the temper and disposition of our souls; that no unclean thoughts, unlawful designs, or inordinate desires, may rest there. Purge our hearts from envy, hatred, and malice; that we may never suffer the sun to go down upon our wrath; but may always go to our rest in peace, charity, and good-will, with a conscience void of offence towards thee, and towards men; that so we may be preserved pure and blameless, unto the coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

O

h Lord, we beseech thee to continue thy gracious protection to us this day unto its night. Defend us from all dangers and mischiefs, and from the fear of them; that we may enjoy such refreshing sleep as may fit us for the duties of the coming day. And grant us grace always to live in such a state that we may never be afraid to die; so that, living and dying, we may be thine, through the merits and satisfaction of thy Son Christ Jesus, in whose Name we offer up these our imperfect prayers. Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Bishop Dennis is a brilliant speaker.  He is able to take biblical precepts and make them perfectly understandable, even to me.  Oft he provides the text of his sermons and I take the utmost pleasure in passing them on:

Sola Gratia, Sola Fide

Twenty-third Sunday after Trinity

November 19, 2017

The Reformers believed many of the doctrines and practices of the Medieval Roman Church contradicted the teachings and practices of the Bible and the early Church.  They set forth five statements, which they believed exposed the errors and recovered the true, Biblical faith.  We call these statements the Five Solas of the Reformation.

We have been looking at the solas since October 29 as we remember the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses, and the recovery of Biblical faith through the work of the Reformers.  We have looked at Soli Deo Gloria and Solus Christus.  Today I want to look at two more, Sola Gratia and Sola Fide.  Grace alone, and faith alone.

At first, most of the Reformers’ discussion centered on the issue of the forgiveness of sins. Forgiveness is one of the most important issues in the Bible and in human existence, and the Reformers believed they had found errors in the Church’s teaching here.  They agreed with the Church on the reality of sin and the pressing need of all people to be forgiven and restored to God, but they had a major disagreement about how forgiveness and reconciliation are accomplished.  The Reformers claimed forgiveness is a gift from God, accomplished by the cross of Christ.  On the cross, He suffered the penalty of your sins, paid the price of your sins, satisfied the justice of God, and bore the cost of your forgiveness.  “God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself.”

This, put the Reformers at odds with the Roman Church, but this is not the end of the issue.  Now the question arises, how does a person receive the forgiveness Christ purchased on the cross?  Here, again the Reformers clashed with the official teaching of the Medieval Church, which centered around earning merit.  Merit, as it is was being taught by the Roman Catholic Church, is something done by people to deserve forgiveness. Merit cancels sin, and if you earn enough merit you can skip purgatory and go straight to Heaven.

According to the Reformers, merit is given, not earned.  Indeed it is utterly, completely, and eternally impossible for any human being to earn merit.   Why?  Original sin.  We are all familiar with the story of Abraham, and the Covenant God made with him.  We know the Covenant was with Abraham and his descendants through Abraham as their representative.  The Covenant promised blessings and grace from God, and required obedience and faith from Abraham and his people.  That was not the first Covenant God made with people.  The first was with Adam. In this Covenant, Adam was the head and representative of all mankind, so the Covenant was with  all humanity through Adam.  God promised to give humanity eternal life, paradise, and fellowship with God.  In return, humanity would give God love and obedience to His will: especially they would not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

There were penalties for breaking the Covenant, just as there are penalties for breaking a contract.  A mortgage is a covenant between you and the bank.  The blessing of the mortgage is that you get to use the bank’s money and buy the house.  The duty of the covenant is that you pay your monthly mortgage bill.  The penalty, or, curse, of the covenant is that if you fail to pay your mortgage, the bank takes your house.

Adam broke the Covenant with God.  Therefore, the curse of the Covenant has fallen upon all whom Adam represented, which is, all humanity.  There are many aspects of the curse, but the one we need to talk about today is death.  I am not talking about physical death, though that is a part of the curse.  I am talking about spiritual death.  I am talking about the loss of righteousness and the inability to make ourselves righteous and acceptable to God.  We became dead toward God, as dead toward Him as a corpse is toward the world.  And, just as a corpse cannot give itself life, neither can a spiritual corpse make itself alive to God, by any action of its own.  No pilgrimage to Rome, no veneration of relics, no hail marys, and no indulgence from the pope can earn merit from God, or put a person in the spiritual position of deserving forgiveness from God.

So if we are all dead to God because of sin, and if there is nothing we can do to atone for our sins, how can we ever get out of this spiritual death, which includes the second and real death, the eternal fires of hell?  We can’t.  But God can.  That’s what the cross was all about.  Jesus died our death.  Jesus paid our penalty.  Jesus suffered all the curse of the broken Covenant on our behalf.  He suffered the curse as our representative, just as Adam brought us into the curse as our representative.  Jesus offers to restore us to what life was like before the curse, and He gives that life to us as a free gift.

We call this, grace.  Sola Gratia, means this all comes to us through grace alone.  That is what makes the Reformation view different from the Roman Catholic view.  We do not believe we can do anything that makes us worthy of God’s forgiveness.  It is not something He gives on the basis of something we do.  That would be grace plus our good works.    Grace alone means forgiveness is something given to us in our complete lack of merit.  It is entirely the gift of God from start to finish.  It is grace plus nothing.  It is grace alone.  Sola Gratia.

Now the question becomes, how is the grace of God received by sinners?  The answer; Sola Fide, faith alone.  Faith is the act of believing Christ is the Son of God.  That doesn’t mean He is God’s baby.  It means He is part of the Trinity as we talked about last Sunday, and as we read a few minutes ago in the Nicene Creed.  It is to believe He is “God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; Begotten not made; Being of one substance with the Father.”

More importantly, it is to believe the words of Christ, recorded in the Holy Bible.  Words like, “I and the Father are one.”  “He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father.”  “I am in the Father, and the Father in Me.”  It is to believe in Jesus the way“Doubting Thomas” believed when he finally saw the risen Christ, and realised who Jesus is. He bowed at the feet of Jesus and said, “my Lord, and my God.”

Faith is believing Christ suffered the curse in your place as your representative.  Faith is trusting Him with your eternal soul.  Faith is trusting what He did on the cross to pay for and forgive your sins. Faith is trusting Christ to be your Saviour.   That is faith, and faith is the only way to receive grace.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint Johns Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Twenty-Third Sunday after Trinity

Today’s Gospel presents an account of Lord’s temptation by the Pharisees and Herodians to speak against the Roman authorities. These men had hoped to bait him into making a seditious comment so they could have him arrested. Our Lord perceived their thoughts and answered them with, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?, and afterward said, Shew me the tribute money. Now the coin which the Pharisees and Herodians presented to him bore the image of Tiberius Caesar. When our Lord asked them whose image was on the coin, they almost gleefully replied, Caesar’s, to which he gave them the now famous response of, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.

As Christians, we are to render unto God that which is his due: more particularly to love him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. We are also expected to pay our taxes and to do all that is lawful under the rubrics of our order of governance. Our Lord did not say render unto Caesar on certain occasions, or if we feel like it. We are expected to, as St. Paul stated in his epistle to the Romans (13:7), render… tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour… is due. Our Lord expects us to live peaceably within our communities and thus avoid any action which might bring opprobrium upon ourselves or the gospel.

We have seen what our Lord did and said, now let us look at what he did not do. He did not raise the specter of rebellion against the Roman authorities because that was not his purpose. As he told the temple guards who had come to seize him in the Garden of Gethsemane following his institution of the Lord’s Supper, Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be (Matthew 26:53, 54)? And to Pilate he said, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence (John 18:36).

Our Lord came to seek and save the lost. He came to die for our sins and rise again. His revolution was to gain the promised victory for all his saints over the world, the flesh and the devil. And this he did. He did not come to lead a violent and bloody clash with the armies of Rome. He counseled peace and obedience within the existing governmental framework.

Returning to Romans 13, the apostle Paul explained the reasons for our required good citizenship. Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisted the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil… Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake (vv.1-7). But does this mean that we must be obedient in the face of tyranny?

Sometime ago, Robert Hawes— a Libertarian writer— addressed this issue in his article entitled Higher Powers:

The first thing I would like to point out to people… who think Christians should obey government officials no matter what because they are the higher powers, is that there is another, yet higher power… the Constitution of the United States. This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land (Article VI, Section 1). It is from the Constitution that our elected officials, both federal and state, derive their office and legitimate powers. Their powers are delegated… they are limited to the specific areas of authority… Further, [they] are bound by oath or affirmation to support the Constitution and its provisions… Thus, in taking up the powers and responsibilities of political office, our elected officials are also agreeing to place themselves under the law. This is one of the foundational ideas of the American political system: the concept that everyone is under law and equal in its eyes. For this reason, if government officials violate the Constitution, their actions are… void of authority… they are as much criminals as the guy who robs your local 7-11 store…

Our Lord did not condone evil, but rather rebuked such at every turn, and we are to do so as well. God has given us this land of liberty as a gift and we should do all we can to preserve it. If we choose not to act, then we are in essence abdicating our God-given freedoms to the forces of tyranny. We cannot proclaim liberty throughout all the land if we are not willing to stand up for our God-given rights which he has supplied us in our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

I have heard some Christian pastors say Romans 13 pronounces an absolute prohibition against resistance to a tyrannical government. These ministers believe even if our government became tyrannical, we would still be required under the apostle’s teaching to be obedient to it for conscience sake (v.5b). If you think so, consider this: If one acquiesces to tyranny, one is therefore in agreement with it and will suffer God’s condemnation. And why? Because approval-without-action is just as much sin as approval-by-participation (see Romans 1:32).

Our duty as Christians is to keep our hearts and minds turned toward God regardless of our situation or circumstance. We ought be leaning on his everlasting arms and not on our understanding. And we should not be afraid to petition God regarding our cares and concerns. If we will do these things, we will be rendering unto God the things that are God’s as our Lord commanded.

Let us pray,

H

oly Father, we humbly beseech thee to pour upon us thy blessing and thy peace; that being so filled we would do the works thou hast commandest us to do; for these thing we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Saviour and Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  Wed like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.
