Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity

Sunday Report

Today was the Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday as the Endless Green Season marches on!

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

A time will come when instead of shepherds feeding the sheep, the church will have clowns entertaining the goats!

Charles H. Spurgeon

19th Century English pastor and author

Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Luke 4:8

For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.

Matthew 9:56

Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

John 7:24

The matter is not great whether our lives on earth be long or short, but whether we live the lives of saints or the lives of sinners.

Matthew Henry

17th and 18th century English pastor and author

Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

Mark 8:33

Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

Luke 21:8

Humanity always finds out, sooner or later, that it cannot get on without a religion, and it will take a false one in preference to none. Infidelity and practical ungodliness will become increasingly prevalent… and our churches will have a more arduous contest for growth if not for existence.

Robert Lewis Dabney

19th century American theologian and Confederate officer

Do not be fooled by a belief that progressives, leftists hate guns. Oh, no, they do not. What they hate is guns in the hands of those who are not marching in lock step [with] their ideology. They hate guns in the hands of those who think for themselves and do not obey without question. They hate guns in those whom they have slated for a barrel to the back of the ear.

No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 6:44

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard.  It is quite interesting the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States.  Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church.  Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of the nation.

The Propers for today are found on Page 209-210, with the Collect first:

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle came from Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, the Fifth Chapter beginning at the Sixteenth Verse.  Paul tells us that Heaven and Earth are in conflict in our lives, “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”  If we are led of the Spirit, we are not under the law.  If we are subject to the law, which we are bound to break due to our own inability to be ultimately good, we are also bound to the pit.  But if we are with Christ, we are forgiven of our sins, providing we are truly repentant.  We will enjoy “the fruit of the Spirit … love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

I

say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Today’s Holy Gospel started in the Seventeenth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the Eleventh Verse.  Jesus comes upon ten lepers who appeal to Him,  “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”  He does and tells them, “Go shew yourselves unto the priests.”  As they left him, their leprosy disappeared.  One of the ten, “when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan[1].”  Jesus marveled at the nine who turned not saying, “Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?  There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.”  Once again a Samaritan, the “least” among the Jews was the only one to recognize and offer thanks to the Power of God.  Do we recognize the power of God in our lives and do we thank Him for the good He does us?

A

nd it came to pass, as Jesus went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: and they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan[2]. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

The Collect.

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect

How does one attain to the salvation of one’s soul? Does salvation come by personal merit, good works, a commendable spirit, sacrifice, or bloodlines? No, salvation comes by none of these according to Holy Scripture. Then from whence does it come and by what means? Please review the following text – parse every phrase and word – then, answer by what means we are saved:  But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)  And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:  That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Eph 2:4-10) Did you discover a single thing that you can do to enter into the salvation of the Lord? At the moment of salvation, we were ‘quickened’ (made alive) to know and to love God. We did not love God before He came to love us. If we DO love God, when did we come to know and love Him? We love him, because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19)

If we were, in fact, “dead in sins” how could we hear His voice or appeal to His mercy? We could not. A dead person can do NOTHING. It was His grace and love which spoke through our dead ears and pierced the chambers of our dead hearts – lying in state – in a dead and dying world. His grace revived us when we could not hear, see or speak righteousness just as the thief upon the cross.

Our Collect for this 14th Sunday after Trinity brings to our remembrance Scriptural Truth concerning our means of grace and salvation. ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity. The beauty of the Collects of the English Book of Common Prayer is that each Collect is based wholly on Scriptural Truth, each word proven in biblical texts. Are we born with a faith in God, or do we somehow acquire that faith from some source along the way? For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast Many of us prefer to base our view of Scripture on the writings of some great theologian, and identify our understanding by that man’s name – Calvin, Arminius, Luther, or Cranmer. Admittedly, all of these were stellar biblical scholars; but these men do not define for me what I believe. I may agree with one, or more, of them in many respects; but I do not base my faith in those names but in that Name above every other Name – the Lord Jesus Christ!

I am a Christian, and not a Calvinist, or Arminian, or Lutheran, or Anglican, FIRST. Just the mention of these names or faiths will often needlessly open up a great division of distrust and misunderstanding. So I always insist on explaining my faith in biblical terms and not the writings of men. This is what the Collects do, as well. They appeal to that Name above every other Name – Almighty and everliving God…. Today’s Collect makes a petition of the Lord to be given – not wealth – but an increase of faith, hope, and charity. Of course, God is the Source for each of these mighty gifts. These three gifts are all of great merit; however, one is greater than the other two for, without it, the other two matter not. What is that one gift that surpasses all others? It is LOVE! And now abideth faith, hope, charity (love), these three; but the greatest of these is charity. (1 Cor 13:13) And did you love God first, or did He love YOU first? (1 John 4:19 above). Even our love comes from God. So the Collect petitions for an increase in these three gifts from the heart of God.

Do we wholly love God with all our heart, strength, mind and soul? If we do so love God, we will love every asset of God that defines Him – including His Holy Commandments. In fact, we will love ALL of His words and works from the beginning until now. “…..and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command. What promise? It is the promise and seal of salvation by the Holy Spirit: In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. (Eph 1:13-14)

It is a truth revealed through our faith given us by God that we belong to Him. Why do we insist on spending endless ages arguing over finer points of Scripture to prove that our salvation came by the predestined Will of God, or by some decision made by us after gaining a knowledge of Christ. Isn’t the more important issue that we KNOW we belong to Him regardless the means of our coming? The Calvinist will relegate all Arminians to Hell, and the Arminians are no more merciful toward the Calvinist. It is a sad truth both base their understanding on different interpretations of Scripture. In fact, many Christians who decry Calvin actually believe what Calvin taught if the proof is not Calvin, but Scripture. God must be terribly hurt by our theological quibbling when we basically, as Christians, all agree that our salvation is the sole act of God.

The Collect reassuringly is concluded, again, by an appeal to that Name above every other Name: “…through Jesus Christ (not through Calvin, Arminius, or Luther) our Lord. Amen Do you label YOUR faith by a man’s name, or by that Name above every other Name? Are YOU Christian?

Sermon – Gratitude

The casual (to us) beginning of this Gospel text – “And it came to pass….” – is not casual at all. In fact, nothing in Scripture is casual. It was determined from ages past to “come to pass” for it was an event in the foreordained ministry of our Lord. Jesus is on His final journey of His earthly mission to Jerusalem to suffer and die for remission of our sins. His journey includes the gentile region of Samaria as well as the Jewish sector of Galilee. This should comfort us in understanding that His ministry was to all people of faith, and not limited merely to a certain race of people.

Our text today involves, again, the healing of lepers. Leprosy might be compared to sin in several particulars:

  1. Sin is insidious in its onslaught. It is not usually obvious at what point an innocent child comes to age of reckoning and becomes an outright sinner – but the sin will grow to the point that it is obvious to all that the former child willfully sins. The same is true of leprosy. No one notices the early onslaught of leprosy – even the victim. But with time, spots and blemishes appear that grow more all-invasive and severe until the body appendages begin to rot and deteriorate.
  2. Leprosy, like sin, has an increasingly reprehensible odor associated with its progress. At first, one might be able to cover the odor with ointments and perfumes, but even these cannot stench the growing unpleasant odor that the disease emits.
  3. Leprosy, like sin, separates us from our loved ones. A leper is disposed to live apart from all others of society and to shout, “Unclean!” to all who might approach him. Sin separates us from God.
  4. Leprosy is debilitating – so is sin. Many of the dreams and aspirations of the leper are interdicted by the disease. The same is true of the growing depravity of sin.
  5. Leprosy finally kills its victim – so does sin result in spiritual death of its victim.

These are just a few of the parallels that can be drawn between leprosy and sin.

Jesus is the Great Physician – not only in healing the body, but also the soul. As we look at this text today, let us consider the condition of our own hearts in comparison with those of the lepers described.

Jesus is approaching a village at some point on his journey.

He is met by ten lepers outside the village – lepers were not allowed to mingle with the village people. They could not approach near to Jesus, but remained afar off. Sinners, too, cannot come near to Christ until they do so with penitent heart. Sinners are separated from God by their sin.

They believed that Jesus could help them though they could not fully understand the manner of healing. They believed strongly enough that they, in unison, lifted up their voices and cried, “Master have mercy on us.” IT is not necessary to beg for details of mercy. The mercy of Christ will always suffice for our healing.

Prayer will always get the attention of the Lord. Jesus had not yet seen the men until they called upon His name. “And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests.” Another point illustrated here is the fact that distance is not an impediment to healing where the Lord is concerned.

Why show themselves to the priests? It was not to complete any healing, for they were healed as they went away – it was to grant them entrance into polite society again. When we come to Christ, we are admitted to the society of other believers – we are accounted righteous though our righteousness is that IMPUTED righteousness of Christy and not our own.

And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.” It surely MUST come to pass if Jesus issues the decree!

When we come to Christ, believing in faith, our faith must result in acting upon that faith. Obedience to Christ requires our immediate response. Immediately the lepers departed to see the priests. When we have repented of our sins and believed, we must walk in a different direction, and with a different purpose, than our previous walks.

15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God.” The grant of great expectations requires a great response. One of the ten, realizing that his leprosy was gone, could continue no further without glorifying the Great Benefactor who had healed him. He was not ashamed to lift his voice and loudly glorify God. In fact, I do not believe he could resist doing so. How silent do we remain after Jesus has healed us of our great sins? Should we not bear witness, far and wide, of our healing by revealing that Great Physician that healed us to other lepers?

It is implied nine were Jewish, and clearly stated this one was a Samaritan that was healed. He could not resist the power of gratitude to fall at the feet of Jesus and thank him for so great a favor. “And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.” He was the very one least expected to come near to Christ – he was a Samaritan! But he was now cleansed and, as we must do also, he came near to Christ after his healing. After our forgiveness of sins, we, too, must draw near by faith to Christ and ever after remain so.

In our sins, we are all strangers to God, but once we are cleansed, we delight in His company. “And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.” Today in church, there are perhaps one in ten who are gracious and loving of Christ to kneel (in their hearts) at his feet and than Him for His many mercies to them. Where are the nine? They are no longer in fellowship with Christ. They have disappeared!

Only this stranger – this Samaritan – was made whole and healed to the fullest. The other nine had their leprosy healed, indeed; but they again drifted away and were separated from the most important One with whom they could have associated themselves. Many make public professions of faith and do the same thing. “And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.”  The faith (and gratitude) of the Samaritan had made him whole to the fullest extent. Not only had his leprosy been healed, but, more importantly, his soul!

Everyone present in the worship service today has that opportunity to express their full faith and gratitude to Christ – through their public testimony, through their changed lives, and through their service to Him. Have you done so?

Sermon – Reverend Hap Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Rev Hap’s sermon can be viewed on video RIGHT HERE!

Today’s sermon tied the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and talked, as is oft the case, of the need for action, not simply diction.

Today we consider The Law and how it failed to solve the problems of the people it was designed to help and think about how getting around technicalities is different than doing what is right.

Consider the words of the Collect, “…give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command …”

The Collects often are repetitive, in that we pretty much ask the same thing week after week.  Why is that?  We have the same failings and frailty week after week. We are asking Him to make us want to follow Him that we might gain the prize which He has promised us.  That prize is eternal life which begins when we accept it, not when we die. We need to realize this fact and adjust our lives accordingly. We have to shift our focus from the short term to the ultra-long term (i.e, eternal) view of our actions. This will help us to become better spiritual stewards of the gifts which God has bestowed upon us.  And once more we ask God to help us want what He wants for us not what we want for ourselves.

We are praying for the increase of faith, hope and love, so we can maintain that course guidance.  Just like Paul says, if we do not have these qualities in us, it is impossible for us to stay on course. And we do not obtain these qualities from ourselves, but from the Holy Ghost. We need to listen to Him in order to stay on course. Not just listen to what He says then go off and do what we want to do. He is our infallible navigation aid. He will never fail us. The problem lies more in us failing Him. But with His Help and Guidance we will succeed. To succeed, there must be change on our part, modification of our behavior to follow Him. It requires actual action. This is the constant of Christian living that is unavoidable.

Paul lists out the actions that are the works of those who are still under the influence of this world or the flesh, i.e fornication, heresies, strife, envying etc. If we are truly people of God, then we will not have those qualities and will do our best to quell them. Those are all qualities that make us worse human beings and draw us further away from God and not nearer to Him. Then he lists out the qualities of those who are of the spirit, long suffering, peacefulness, good faith, gentleness meekness etc. These are the qualities that if we let the Holy Ghost into our hearts we will heave.

It is only by having these qualities that we are able to follow God and do to His Will. Without the Holy Spirit in our hearts, we will be unable to have these qualities and have less happier lives. We have to make the effort to let the Holy Ghost in and shine his light in our hearts and drive out the bad qualities and let the good qualities in. The good qualities will not only help us to serve God, but make us a lot more pleasant human beings to be around.

These qualities will improve not just our spiritual but our physical lives immensely. The bad qualities can take a toll on our physical body not just our spiritual selves. The good qualities will do the opposite, will have a positive effect on our physical body and spiritual selves. It is in our best interest to do our best to follow God, and we will not only help Him by doing so, but helping our selves at the same time.

In order to perform action actions to serve Him, we need the Holy Ghost. However, the question is who will listen to the Holy Ghost? The only people who listen are those who are in need, hurt, pain and despair.  Often it is because they, or one of their loved ones, are ill or injured, perhaps near death.  Perhaps they are unemployed or undergoing some family upheaval.  Their situation is less than perfect.  They need help and they know it.  In their own mind, they are the Samaritans of this world. It is no accident Jesus’ parables and stories center on actions, not words, thoughts and meditations.  We need to retrain ourselves to ask for His Help before we are in need, pain or despair. The Holy Ghost can help us retrain ourselves, if we will but let Him in. Actions show who you truly are. Actions show the world who you follow, God or Mammon. You are not truly be a believer if you don’t act for Him. Without action, there is nothing. The key driving principle behind his parables are actions for Him, are those of goodness, not of evil.  Those who believe on me keep my commandments.

Actions!

Yet, those who turn to God in “need” are no different than each of us.  To quote Paul, “None are perfect, all fall short.”  We, each and every one of us, need God’s help.  Perhaps some need it more, none need it less.

When Luke tells us of Jesus and the ten lepers whom He heals and only one expresses thanks, do you think he is only telling of lepers? It is a metaphor for us. When things go wrong, we often blame God. When things go right, oh weren’t we so clever?  All too often, when God assists us, we do not turn back to Him in thanks, but merely go on our way and credit ourselves for being so smart. One of the lessons is that when God helps us in our lives, we should always take the time to give thanks to Him who helped us and created us.

Through our Lord, God is there for each of us if we will accept His help.  When He gives that help, how do we react?  Frankly most of us just think it our due.  We oft fail to give thanks for all that He gives us.

When we get an answer we don’t expect, do we thank Him?  What if we get an answer?  Do we thank Him?

Like the lepers only one in ten will show thanks for the mercy and help given them.  Rarely do people give thanks for large efforts done to help them. We must endeavor to be grateful for Him and for all of those who strive hard to help us out in our times of need.  In the case of the lepers, it was the Samaritan[4], showing that fancy dress and rules are not as important as doing what is right and being grateful for what we are given.

Are you part of that 10 percent?

Remember, it is Please and Thank You that are the magic words, not Please and I don’t have time for you.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

The Collect.

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

T

HE word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,  2 Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the Lord.  3 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.  4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, are these.  5 For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour;  6 If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt:  7 Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.  8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.  9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;  10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?  11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the Lord. (Jeremiah 7:1-11)

This reading from the prophet Jeremiah, is centered on the dark times of Israel when the people were not being faithful, the leaders were being evil, the very places of worship were being misused.  So much that Jeremiah writes about is being played out again in our time.  He is very clear in pointing out what causes the problems that the people are faced with, he very clearly writes about action/reaction.

What is amazing is how current this 2400+ year old text actually is.  How can we not see the hand of the Lord in His word?

As we know, God instructs, corrects, and speaks to us in his HOLY word; and taken in context both his Holy Word and the Word made flesh, his only begotten Son, Jesus.

Let us notice a couple strong directives;

  1. Do not trust in deceptive words. Today many are using deceptive words to try and calm and sooth those who may not realize that those words are filled with true hate. Why do I say hate?  If a person is perishing and no one tells them to be aware, or to turn from their wicked ways and live, then you are really showing hate by letting that person think that there is nothing wrong with their everyday  and then one day to perish.  In verses 5,6,7 we see a clear directive of how to live. The warning signs are out there, we need to heed them.

  1. Do not do evil things elsewhere and then come to the house of the Lord saying everything is safe. In other words don’t be doing things on the sly or in the darkness and then expect to come to God’s house and pretend it isn’t happening.  This warning is especially pointed at those who lead others in worship.  Robbing, stealing, murder, well maybe not in the full sense of the word, but if you are not a clear message giver, if you do not show the right path, the only path, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, then maybe you are guilty of the above actions.  Notice the last part of Verse 11, I HAVE BEEN WATCHING ! DECLARES THE LORD. Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.

  1. The rest of Chapter 7 gives more warnings and admonitions to those who would profess to be faithful, but are not. We can even find a reference to what Jesus will confront on his last trip to Jerusalem. The absolute corruption of the Temple, the desolation of what is meant to be holy. Jeremiah is pointing down the halls of history to that time when Jesus confronts the corrupt money changers, the crooked animal sacrifice providers, the whole rotten system allowed by the clergy of the Temple to flourish right on the grounds of the Temple. 4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these.   8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.

The prophet was warning of evil to come. He was writing to warn that this system that Jesus will encounter, was not the proper way to worship God.  Just because you say it over and over does not make it true.

Then Jeremiah give us a word of redemption:  3Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.

As people of faith, as people of the Book, the Holy Bible, we need to always be on guard for those who would try to lead us astray.  Much of the Bible gives warning to false teachers, false preachers, and in general any one who would lead the sheep of HIS pasture astray, warning those who try, that there will be great consequences for their actions. to whom much is given, much is required.

Here are some important things to remember.

  1. Daily talk to God, go to him in prayer.
  2. Daily let God talk to you, read His Word and he will talk to you.
  3. Daily pray for others, your family, your pastors, your boss, your leaders, and your country.

God uses the small to confound the great.  I am reminded of our AOC brothers and sisters around the world, who upon notification from Sister Cinder and the National office, will pray for perfect strangers worldwide.  They lift up the sick, the despondent, those who face difficult surgeries, those who have suffered loss, to the throne of God the Father and Jesus Christ the Great Physician: all for healing, peace, or comfort in God’s will.

Let us always remember each other before the Lord. Paul wrote he did this continually, throughout his whole ministry, even up to the time of his execution in Rome.

Do we have the stamina to stand firm in the Lord?  Do we have the faith to believe He will provide what is needed to us, not according to our will, but His?

Let the Lord work in you this week and in the days to come; give God the glory for great things He has done.

He will use you in so many ways, let Him work in your life so you don’t follow the wrong path and be confounded by those who mean harm.

Let us pray,

O

God of unchangeable power and light eternal: Look favorably upon the body of thy whole church, and by thy eternal providence accomplish the salvation of man, that all the world may see and know that what was fallen has been lifted up, and what was grown old has been made new, and that all things are restored by him through whom they were made, even thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.    Amen.

O

 Lord, take our minds, and think through them, Take our lips, and speak through them, Take our hearts, and set them on fire with love for thee. What we know not, teach us. What we have not, give us. What we are not, make us. For Jesus Christ’s sake.           Amen.

T

he grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore.   Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity

In our first lesson today, we read the prophet Jeremiah’s words to the people of Jerusalem and Judah: Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not; and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations (7:9)? A godly person’s answer would be an emphatic NO. Unfortunately, for both the kingdoms of Israel and Judah the answer was an unqualified YES. We should also understand that those behaviors which were set forth by the prophet are just as much present in our time as they were in the world of ancient Israel. If one makes but a cursory review of what passes for news, one will find those behaviors being exercised with depressing regularity. While we could spend quite a lot of time on those sins mentioned by the prophet, the focus of this message will be confined to the sin of walking after other gods, or idolatry.

We should know and understand that in ancient times, polytheism was the most popular form of religion. While Noah and his sons held a belief in the one true and living God that was eventually set aside. In just a few generations following the deluge, the monotheism of Noah had degenerated into the polytheism of Nimrod and his descendants. One may ask, “Why was such the case?” Because the scriptures tell us that the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth (Genesis 8:21). Man is a fallen creature possessing the spiritual trait of original sin. Ergo, every person knows the difference between good and evil whether they want to admit it or not (Genesis 2:17). Therefore, all sin is a conscious choice made by men to do evil on account of that trait (Romans 7:7-24). In the Book of Exodus, God set forth in the first two commandments that he alone is God, and that no graven images of any kind were to be made of him and used in his worship (20:1-6).

The other peoples of the earth worshiped idols and images which were the work of their hands (see Isaiah 44:8-17). St. Paul warned the Corinthian church in his first epistle about the dark forces behind idol worship when he noted that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice unto devils, and not to God… (10:20). He also warned the church in Rome concerning the same when he wrote, Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things (Romans 1:21-23). St. John warned his readers in his first epistle to, keep yourselves from idols (5:21), and for some the first three centuries following its birth, the Christian church rejected the use of idols and images in worship. Unfortunately, as the 5th century dawned, a distinct change was sweeping over Christendom. As Dr. Jesse Hurlbut explained, “… the triumph of Christianity resulted in… [an] alliance of the state and the church… The ceasing of persecution was a blessing, but the establishment of Christianity as the state religion became a curse.”

Dr. Hurlbut went on to describe how the increase in church membership, which came about because of its official approval by the Emperor Constantine, opened the way for, “…both the good and the bad, sincere seekers after God and hypocritical seekers after gain…Ambitious, worldly, and unscrupulous men sought office in the church for social and political influence. The moral tone of Christianity in power was far below that which had marked the same people under persecution.” With the influx of the unconverted pagan masses, idolatry was soon to follow. Dr. Hurlbut observed that, “The services of worship increased in splendor, but were less spiritual… The forms and ceremonies of paganism gradually crept into the worship. Some old heathen feasts became church festivals with a change of name and of worship. About 405 AD images of saints and martyrs began to appear in churches, adored, and worshiped. The adoration of the Virgin Mary was substituted for the worship of Venus and Diana…”

It was not until the Reformation in the 16th Century that the tide of idolatry was briefly stemmed. The new denominations which had formed around the teachings of men such as Martin Luther, John Calvin and Thomas Cranmer rejected the use of images and icons as part of their worship of the Godhead. But alas, such was not the end of the matter. The faithfulness to Scripture which had birthed those churches was not maintained, and by the late 20th century it was not uncommon to find within their sanctuary’s statuary, images and even icons being worshipped and venerated. Others took another course by creating for themselves a whole new set of idols such as church leaders from across the ages; new bible versions; adopting a more allegorical approach to understanding Scripture; and embracing the anti-biblical notion of political correctness in church doctrine and worship despite the expressed prohibitions against such teachings and practices as found within the Bible.

But lest you think that idolatry in our world is confined only to a church building, think again. Today, we are virtually inundated with every form of depravity and licentiousness under the rubric of entertainment. If you have any sort of medium such as cable, etc., you will witness such things. And so everything presented has been written to include behaviors and products that encourage the viewer’s appetite for lustful living. It should not be surprising then to find people worshiping all sorts of things, more particularly their possessions, and their money. Our Lord said that, No man can serve two masters… you cannot serve God and mammon (St. Matthew 6:24), but modern mass man is not reading Scripture. If he attends one of the so-called “mainline” churches he will likely not hear any meaningful exposition of it. And if he attends an evangelical church, all the good preaching in the world will not matter if he does not take to heart what he has heard and then live in accordance with the same.

Idolatry is the Devil’s answer to what the unregenerate desire in a deity. It is an ersatz god which Satan will one day replace with himself. In his way of thinking— which he impresses upon the minds of the unregenerate— “Why have a God that cannot be seen when you can have one of your own making and quite visible? (Exodus 32:1-4; Daniel 11:31; St. Matthew 24:15; Revelation 13:14, 15)? Why bother with the King James Bible and its clear language that expresses God’s commands when you can adopt one of my versions which will better suit your particular point of view (I St. Peter 1:15-21)? Why have a set of laws that are so confining and judgmental when you can follow your own path and set your own course (Romans 3:10-12; St. Jude 11)? Why have a Saviour who is God’s only begotten Son when you can be your own saviour and decision-maker (St. John 3:16-18)? Why have an eschatology that calls for the resurrection of the righteous, and the translation of the saints who will become the exclusive dwellers of God’s coming kingdom when you can have all people of all religions equally sharing in a future paradise (I Corinthians 15:20-58; I Thessalonians 4:13-18; Revelation 20:4- 6)? Why have a theology which speaks of the end of this present world system when you can simply have a change from one age to another with little or no fuss (II St. Peter 3:1-13)?” And in support of this point, the Rev. Robert Lewis Dabney once observed that, “Humanity always finds out, sooner or later, that it cannot get on without a religion, and it will take a false one in preference to none. Infidelity and practical ungodliness will become increasingly prevalent… and our churches will have a more arduous contest for growth if not for existence.” No doubt, “Time has come today” with regard to the Dr. Dabney’s prognostication. It is here for all to see.

Plainly, those who walk after other gods are acting in opposition to the expressed commands of our righteous and holy God as found in his word written. And it should be clearly understood that those who do such are in danger of everlasting damnation. God expects everyone to follow his word for their eternal good. He sent his only begotten Son into the world to serve as a propitiation for sin so that all who believe on him shall not perish but have everlasting life. He commands us to love and serve him, seeking his will for us on a daily basis. So it stands to reason that if one places any person or any thing ahead of the Godhead, then one has committed the sin of idolatry. The First and Second Commandments call on the faithful to hold to the Godhead against all other so-called deities. Therefore, let us live in obedience to the expressed will of God and avoid every form and appearance of evil by rejecting idolatry in all its forms, giving only to our blessed Lord and God all the glory, laud and honor he rightly deserves.

Let us pray,

O

 gracious Father, we ask for your protection as we wrestle with the forces of darkness that have been arrayed against us by our adversary the devil; and that in all our efforts to stand for the faith, give us courage to reach into the fire and pull as many as we can from the enemy’s grasp; for this we ask in the name of him whose mighty hand holds us so that we are kept from falling, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week,

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  Wed like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells

While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.

The most common cause of death related to multiple myeloma is infection, with pneumonia being the most common fatal infection. Other common causes of death are bleeding (from low platelet counts), complications of bone fractures, kidney failure, and blood clots in the lungs.

Michael Baran End stage congestive heart failure.  20 March 20 at 10:56 AM  To all my friends and family I had to go to the hospital in Rochester NY where I had my implant mechanical heart assist pump placed in my abdomen. I have end stage heart failure.    On Wednesday I had to go to the hospital I was in need of a wheelchair I was very weak and I needed to have someone push me because I got short of breath, and I was so weak, I needed assistance to get up out of the wheelchair.    I had to do a walk test and I had to have help to stand up my blood pressure was so low.  I fell back In to the wheel chair.   I tried to walk after they got me up and was able to use the hand rail and walk about a hundred feet there were two aids behind me I had to stop and nearly collapsed. They kept me from going down.   After all the tests were done the Nurse practitioner reviewed over the results. I had one valve replaced about 6 months ago.  But now the other 3 are leaking,    there is not much they can do for me.

Yesterday I prayed that if God didn’t need me here. to take me home.  I long to be free of this old body and to see my Lord, my family and friends that have gone on to their rewards, to be with them evermore.  I told the Lord if he needs me here then he needs to renew my strength so that I can walk.

I woke up this morning and felt good. I got up to go to the bathroom and to my surprise I did not struggle to stand up!!!  I actually walked to the bathroom without a walker.     I am back in bed crying as I write this to you as the Holy Spirit brought to my mind Isaiah 40:31 ..Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength and shall soar on wings like eagles they will run and not grow weary they shall walk and not faint.

I have been unable to walk more than 100 ft or so, for the last six months in the last two weeks my oxygen saturation was as low as 74 and unable to walk without a walker.   have a lift chair-recliner in the TV room. I am now able to get up without it.!!!

My God is an awesome God he has heard my prayers and has indeed strengthened me.!!!

Columbiq

I am writing to request your prayers for Colombia, my country. At this moment frightful things are happening, a great diabolical shadow is cast over this nation.

  1. The Constitutional Court in a tyrannical way has decriminalized the crime of abortion in Colombia, even up to six months. This is an illegitimate process, the court is legislating, something that is not within the competence of the judges, on the other hand the issue of abortion was a cause judged in 2006, which is why it should not be judged again in 2022. But socialist groups, international elites, social engineers and feminist groups have not given up on the issue. They want to traffic in death.

  1. The candidate of the extreme left Gustavo Petro is close to become the president of Colombia, this is a man who in his youth was a guerrilla criminal, a vile and despicable man who has always served the interests of drug trafficking, he was an advisor to Chavez who implanted Communism in Venezuela, his second home is Communist Cuba.

  1. The same court approved the movement of Gustavo Petro called: “la Colombia Humana”, it gave him the status of a political party, with this, he has the possibility of getting to introduce at least 15 congressmen, basically he is close to kidnapping all the powers, he already has the judicial power in his pocket, he only lacks the executive and the legislative. We are close to the precipice, we trust in a miracle of God.

We hope you support us with your prayers, I will ask the brothers to pray unceasingly so that in his mercy we will be saved from these perverse men. God bless you and keep you in all things.

Your servant in Christ,

Bishop José Antonio Rios

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.
