New Year
Circumcision of Christ
Sunday Report
Another Year Is Dawning
Another year is dawning, dear Father, let it be
In working or in waiting, another year with Thee.
Another year of progress, another year of praise,
Another year of proving Thy presence all the days.
Another year of mercies, of faithfulness and grace,
Another year of gladness in the shining of Thy face;
Another year of leaning upon Thy loving breast;
Another year of trusting, of quiet, happy rest.
Another year of service, of witness for Thy love,
Another year of training for holier work above.
Another year is dawning, dear Father, let it be
On earth, or else in Heaven, another year for Thee.
Frances R. Havergal, 1874
Circumcision of Christ
Today we celebrate the circumcision of Jesus in accordance with Jewish tradition, eight days (according to the Semitic and southern European calculation of intervals of days) after his birth, the occasion on which the child was formally given his name. The circumcision of Jesus has traditionally been seen, as explained in the popular 14th century work The Golden Legend, as the first time the blood of Christ was shed, and thus the beginning of the process of the redemption of man, and a demonstration Christ was fully human and of his obedience to Biblical law[1]. No longer celebrated by many churches, including the Roman and TEC, it is still the Eighth Day. That has not changed and so we celebrate the event as it is referred to in scripture, thus should it be recalled.
On Point
Someone asked, where do the quotes come from? The answer is from the people who uttered them. But, how did you find them? Oh, that. Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan. He always has some great ones to share. On to the On Point quotes –

Augustus heard of the edict of Herod, by which all the children who were two years old or under were ordered to be killed. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: but we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; but unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called: but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, so to bring to nought things that are: that no flesh should glory in his presence.

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.
The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.
The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off. Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.
The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard. It is quite interesting the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States. Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church. Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of each nation.
Today is one of those Red Letter Days, The Feast of the Circumcision of Christ.
And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. Luke 2:21 (AV)

The Epistle for today came from Paul’s letter to the people of Philippia, starting at the Ninth Verse of the Second Chapter. The portion of the letter used as today’s Epistle is relatively short. God has sent His Son to earth and given him a name above all others, Jesus[2]. Paul exhorts his fellow followers to continue to follow the Lord, not only while he is watching them, but at all times. God will give them the will and ability to do good, but only if they do their best to follow Him.

OD also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
The Gospel for today came from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, the Second Chapter, beginning at the Fifteenth Verse. Today’s Gospel recounts the angels visit to the shepherds who came into Bethlehem to pay homage to Jesus in the manger. It also documents the circumcision of Jesus, bringing Him under the Law. He who: Is, Was and always Will be, put Himself under the Law, that He might fulfill the Law and be our salvation.
Our salvation from the Law came from the perfect sacrifice one time for the sins of all mankind for all time. The sacrifice had to be a perfect human, one who did not exist until Jesus came. That perfect human had to enter in to the Law, had to be subject to the Law. Thus, Jesus submitted Himself unto the Law that he might in the end have dominion over the Law.

nd it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

HEREFORE remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:11-22)
Today, in accordance with the western calendar, we observe the beginning of a New Year. This is not the beginning of the year as mandated in Holy Scripture, for it begins at the season of Spring the first day of the Hebrew month of Nisan. And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. (Ex 12:1-2) (see also Deut 16:1 for Abib which is now Nisan). This month of Nisan was the month of the Passover (14th). It was the ecclesiastical New Year in the Bible. It has been suggested as the month of Christ’s birth, therefore we celebrate Christmas some nine months later.
We have been recently reading from the Gospel of John and his Epistles about what John calls in the beginning. This beginning relates to the Space-Time-Matter continuum that defines our understanding of the created universe. Any day of our lives, however, is a new beginning. If we arbitrarily choose January 1st to be our reference point for a New Year, so be it. Today is the first day of the rest of our lives on earth not unlike every beginning day.
Christ was in the beginning of the Creation of God, but He was also the Creation itself. Today we observe in the Gospel text the Circumcision of Christ. This will formalize His legal reception into the Household of Israel, and the putting off of sin. Just as our Lord needed not to be baptized into newness of life (for He had eternal life in Him), He neither needs the circumcision in the flesh for He was without sin; but Christ will acknowledge and endure every stipulation of the law as an example and enlightenment to us. His Creation of the world (John 1:1-3) was a new beginning. His circumcision represents a new beginning, and His baptism also reflects a new beginning. In reality, His baptism replaces the circumcision for us. Our true life in eternity began at our baptism at which we publicly proclaim, or have it proclaimed for us, our newness of life in Christ.
We now turn to today’s Epistle from Ephesians to get an understanding of what the new circumcision means in our own lives and in Christ. In this epistle to the people of faith of Ephesus, Paul refers to them as ‘saints.’ This is consistent with the fact that none of us can merit our salvation through our good works, but only by the unmerited grace of God. After coming to Christ, we are washed clean of our sins and are considered, on the merits of Christ, to be saints – not in the sense that we are to be venerated as in the case of Rome – but considered righteous in the eyes of God based on the Redemption made available in Christ.
How are we identified today as the people of God? We were once considered people of the Uncircumcision – the unwashed, the unbaptized, and the unholy. We were strangers to God because He was unknown to us. How has that status changed in Christ? Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world. We were Gentiles in the past years because we were aliens to the commonwealth of Israel. We were strangers to God and not entitled to the covenants and promises made available to the people of God (Israel). Being forlorn and without hope, our lives were impoverished by ignorance, darkness, violence, and shame. Being without God in the world is tantamount to being without God in eternity. How sad was our state!
But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. Thank God for this ‘BUT!’ The ‘buts’ in scripture signify a reversal. Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper. (2 Kings 5:1) Naaman was a fairly nice, well-to-do gentleman BUT he had a problem. He had a deadly, odorous, humiliating disease. Notice the contrary side of the coin in Christ. We were a destitute, diseased and dying people. We had the deadly, odorous and humiliating disease of sin, BUT Christ has made us whole! We are no longer aliens and foreigners to the commonwealth of Israel, but are now brought nigh by the blood of Christ! We have become naturalized citizens of the Household of God through the process of adoption of sons and daughters. Those adopted into God’s family enjoy every privilege of the natural children and, in most cases, far greater, for He has called us the true children of Isaac by way of God’s promise. Those who were considered the Household of Israel by accident of birth and genealogy, and who rejected the Lord, are no longer the children of promise. They yet have the privilege of returning to God by the reception of His only Begotten Son as their Lord and Savior. This promise in Isaac is open alike to all peoples.
For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us. In the Temple was a stone wall that separated the court of the Gentiles from the Holy Place. It was certain death to cross that wall. The real wall that separated us from God was the wall of sin. Sin separates us from God and from those, even, that we love. Christ is not our peacemaker, but peace itself to us. He has not become our means of observance of the Passover, but the Passover itself to us. He has not become our means of Rest (Sabbath) but our Sabbath itself (for in Him we have rest from our labors if it is He who works in us). For now there is no dividing line between Jew or Gentile, male or female, bond or free – for all are One in Christ Jesus.
Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace. Christ has not annulled any Commandments of God but those ordinances in the commandments of men that enforced a division between the worldly Israel and the worldly Gentiles, making them One in Christ if they be His in Spirit and in Truth. Christ fulfilled the Laws of God and made them even more binding in love. The spiritual pride that would divide across stone walls has been demolished by Christ to those who receive Him. The stone tablets upon which the commandments of God were written have been abolished – but not the Commandments themselves. They are, rather, now written on the soft sinews of our hearts. The popular notion that the Commandments of God were nailed to the cross is a seditious lie! It is still a grievous sin to commit murder, adultery, bear false witness, to covet, to steal, or to have other gods before God. How ridiculous to have it preached that these Commandments are no longer binding. How can the believing Jews and Gentiles be ONE new man? It is because all believers are One in Christ Jesus. It was the ordinances of the commandments that were nailed to the cross.
And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. There is no chosen people apart from those whom God has chosen and who have chosen God in Christ! No matter the depravity and sins of a people, God would have us carry the Gospel message to all alike. We may consider, as did Jonah, a people to be too far from God for hope of redemption, but we are quenching the efficacious influence of the Holy Ghost to draw His people from every condition of life. We would surely have judged the old Paul (Saul) to be without hope of salvation until his experience of the Damascus Road. We plant the seed and allow the Holy Ghost to work its miracles under the dark soil of the earth. God’s Word is a life-bearing seed that can break through stone.
For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. The Holy Trinity is not divided against Itself, but is One in purpose, will and action. If we are in Christ (the Son), we have access to the throne of Grace of the Father by one Holy Ghost. …and all three are ONE! And so are we One with God the father and God the Holy Ghost if we are One with Christ!
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God. We have an increasing number of illegal aliens in our midst in America today. These are not citizens because they have come to our shores through ways other than the right way. We have many in our churches today who are illegal residents in Israel. They have come for the wrong reasons and by the wrong means. The only access to the kingdom is through Christ. He is our sponsor and our means of adoption. If we have come in any way other than through Christ, we shall not enjoy the privileges of the promise!
And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone. The prophets of the Old Testament, and the Apostles of the New, are the foundation of our faith. We are an apostolic church in that we adhere to the doctrinal apostolic succession of the Church. That is our foundation, and the chief corner stone, like that represented above the Great Pyramid at Giza on our one-dollar bill, from which all authority descends and is maintained together in unity, is Jesus Christ!
In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. The Temple is Christ – the same Temple which He told the Jews that if they destroyed, He would rebuild in three days (which He did at His resurrection). He is both the Temple and the Chief Corner Stone of the Temple. If we are in Christ, each of us is a stone in that Temple. All of His precious stones added together constitute the Temple of His Body. Some of us are quite irregular in shape, and some are round, square, or jagged; but God has a precise place in the Temple for our peculiar shapes and forms. All joined together, we constitute the One Temple with Christ as our Head. Constructed together in Christ, we shall be a fitting abode for God to abide with us through His Spirit.
There is a beautiful old Gospel song written by Wm. O. Cushing and George Root, and sung most commonly by Burl Ives, entitled ‘Jewels:’
When He cometh, When He cometh,
to take up His jewels
All His jewels, precious jewels…
His loved and His own
Like the stars of the morning
His bright crown adorning
They will shine in their beauty
Bright gems for His crown
He will gather, He will gather,
the gems for His kingdom
All the pure ones, all the bright ones
His loved and His own
Little children who love,
their Redeemer and Savior,
All the jewels, precious jewels
His loved and His own…
Bright gems for his crown
This song seems to be based, for its inspiration on the following verses:
A |
ND they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. (Mal 3:17)
A |
ND he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. (Matt 24:31)
A |
ND the LORD their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land. (Zech 9:16)
How comforting it is to know even stones are precious to God and such blessed stones as we are!

Today we recall the circumcision of our Lord and Savior. He is God, yet He is under The Law. How can this be one might ask? If He is God could He just choose not to obey His Own Laws if He so desires? Not all those 613 laws were those called Moral, that is to say the Ten Commandments, but there are those which are moral and there are also laws of God or physics. To answer the question posed earlier, God, the Ultimate Being, is subject to the laws He made.
While He can, and does on the very special occasion, disregard them such as when the shadow went backwards, for the most part He, too, is subject to The Laws[3]. Why? Because they were made for the general good of this world. They establish the moral code we are to follow if we are to be good citizens of His Kingdom. We see what happens when people do not follow the Laws God set out for us to live by.
If we stop living by The Laws, then we are no better than the animals of this world, who live by no such Laws whatsoever. Then, there is no benefit, no reason, for us to follow Christ if we do not live by the laws He has set before us. That is the whole reason to have the Laws, to rein in our evil desires and make us a holy and wholesome people. Without the Laws, we would be not wholesome and vicious and vile individuals. You can see what would happen as you see the forces of Evil attempting to destroy and discredit Christianity all across the globe. The results of their infiltration in various governments are resulting in less people following the Law and thus less people being wholesome and good and instead being encouraged to pursue their own desires at the cost of their soul and eternal life.
If we think do not need to follow these laws, then how could we claim to be following Him? We follow Him because He is the embodiment of all that is good and pleasing, unlike the world, which seems to be the embodiment of pure evil and sickness. They are revolted by God because as they are born of the darkness and not having accepted His Son and His Grace, they cannot bear to look upon the brightness of God. They are like the Orcs of the Lord of the Rings who are disgusted and in fact harmed by sunlight as they are creatures of the darkness. Moses not being able to look upon God without a veil was also an allegory to this simple fact. If we remain in the darkness, we cannot bear to look upon Him, the Living Light. So, we need to let the Holy Ghost enter into our hearts and allow us to bask in His Everlasting Glory and Light.
Evil and sin are diseases which can only be cured by being regenerated through the Holy Ghost. We cannot cure these diseases on our own, as the blind cannot lead the blind in this case, or more appropriately the sick cannot heal the sick. We need the perfect healer of the Holy Ghost to enter into our hearts and cure us of the malady of sin. As a rule, God does not break His own Laws; in the very unique cases He does it is for an extremely good reason. This world needs a system of order so that things are done in an orderly manner and not confusion. Without a system of order, there is chaos. God is not chaos; God never brings confusion. Chaos and Confusion is not of God, but of the Devil.
God never tests, but when we are tested by this world, He monitors the results. He is very much like the proctors who monitored my online exams at WGU. He did not write our tests; however, He is always watching to see how we perform in stressful and trying situations. He brought the new covenant or new agreement to us through His Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Knowing we cannot ever be perfect, He gave us a way to be accounted as perfect at the Judgment Day – One Sacrifice, Made One time, by One Man who was God, for All Mankind for All Time. Jesus is our light and our life. Through Him all things are possible.
All salvation takes is the simple understanding of a child or a shepherd. The simple truth that is Christ. He is not complex. His message is not sophisticated. He is the way. The One Way!
Paul’s Epistle tells us God has set Jesus at the top of the universe’s food chain, so to speak when he says at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, Lord, that is Lord of All. And why? to the glory of God the Father. For God created everything, yet of Him was Jesus begotten. Jesus is the one who created the Earth, so it makes sense that He is at the top of the universes food chain. Recognizing this simple but very important fact, we need to do our best to put Him first in our hearts. We need the help of the Holy Ghost to put Jesus first, as Paul tells us, For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Notice the to will and to do. We are not only to talk, but more importantly to walk.
When you read the rather straightforward accounting of the shepherds being told of the birth of Jesus and their trip into the village to see the newborn babe Luke gives, do wonder what they thought? Here they have been told the King of Kings had just been born in Nazareth; when they come to town, they find a little baby, wrapped in rags, in an animal feeder. Not a kingly sight, not even a common sight, but an almost pitiful sight. A sophisticated and clever thinker might have doubted the angels and let those thoughts lead them further from The Truth. Yet, in their simple acceptance of the angels’ tidings, they started the spread of The Word. They were truly the first of all those converted to followers of Christ. They had the faith as a child would which is to simply believe what they have seen and been told and not to excessively question it. For us, this is the start of the lesson that our faith must be as a child, simple, not complex, not looking to count those angels dancing on the head of the pin, just knowing and believing that however many angels are required to dance on the head of the pin, so will the number be.
This is the first day of the New Calendar Year. Remember also, it is the first day of the remainder of your life here on earth, let it count for something. The line of time stretches from the unfathomable past to the unknowable future. Where the finger of God touches that line is The Present. The Present. The only place in which we can exist; we live in the present, the past will never come again and tomorrow never comes. We can only act in the present, the here and now. Take the right path, starting right now.
Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail. The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.
The time is now, not tomorrow. The time has come, indeed. How will you ACT?
It is by our actions we are known.

OW I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; but is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: but when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive time adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an. heir of God through Christ.

HE birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying. Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, arid thou shalt call his name JESUS: for lie shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: and knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
As we reflect on today’s scripture passages let us marvel at the fulfilment of so many prophetic writings found in the Old Testament. Looking back at the four Sundays in Advent we can see the birth of the promised Messiah, we see the events and messages of Promise all unfolding. What we must also bear in mind, that the First Advent being fulfilled, we know that the Second Advent will also come to pass. We find a number of passages both in the Old and New Testament, that speak of the perfect creation, dirty and fallen, groaning, longing for redemption. We know within our souls that we too need that redemption. We understand that God’s greatest gift, His Son sent to us to die in our place on the painful and shameful cross, is the complete mystery and marvel of the Testaments. We cannot conceive of the idea of doing what God the Father did for us. We are self-centered, selfish, evil, full of hate, envy, pride, and other scabs of a fallen nature, to ever think about redeeming anyone else, let alone ourselves. We just can’t do it.
I like to make a reference to the millions of resolutions that were uttered or written down in the last few days or last night. By the first of February most of those resolutions will have been cast aside like dirty clothes. Most of them will be a mere memory or maybe a few weeks of no pain, no gain at the local gym, YMCA, or other torture chamber located in your town or city.
Not saying that exercise or good diet are not a positive thing, it is just a reminder that we cannot save ourselves. Only the One sent to earth so many millennia ago, Emmanuel, God with us, can save us. …I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no man (one) comes to the Father but by me… That is the Truth that our Lord and Savior left us. Salvation is not ours to complete, least any man boast.
I’d like to end this meditation with a page from the Days of Praise devotional:
And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. (Revelation 21:5)
The coming of a new year is a good time to consider that glorious time to come when Christ will make everything new again. In the present age, all things shall wax old as doth a garment (Hebrews 1:11) under the bondage of the universal law of decay and death; indeed the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now (Romans 8:22).
Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness (2 Peter 3:13). There, in the new Jerusalem, we shall each have a new name and sing a new song (Revelation 21:2; 2:17; 5:9). We shall have new bodies, fashioned like unto his glorious body (Philippians 3:21), and a new dwelling place, prepared by Christ Himself among the many mansions in His Father’s house (John 14:2).
And all the old and dying things will be completely and forever gone. There shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away (Revelation 21:4). And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away (Isaiah 35:10).
What a Happy New Year that will be! In the meantime, we have His new covenant and have each been made a new creature in Christ (Hebrews 12:24; Galatians 6:15). Since all His words are true and faithful, we know His promises are sure. Therefore, already, old things are passed away; behold all things are become new through faith in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Let us pray:
O |
ALMIGHTY God, who alone are without variableness or shadow of turning, and hast safely brought us, through the changes of time, to the beginning of another year: We beseech thee to pardon the sins we have committed the year which is past, and give us grace that we may spend the remainder of our days to the honor and glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A |
LMIGHTY God, who hast poured upon us the new light of thine incarnate Word: Grant that the same light enkindled in our hearts may shine forth in our lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
T |
HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon
We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon. If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth. This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.
First Sunday after Christmas
No doubt you are aware God’s truth has been hidden from the worldly and profane. In the Book of Daniel we are thus informed concerning that fact when the prophet was told, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand: but the wise shall understand (12:10). Now nothing sets off the worst of bible critics than verses like the ones above. Here a few others for your consideration.
In his first epistle to the Corinthians, the apostle Paul advised: For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent (1:18-19).
And in his second epistle to the same he penned: But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them (4:3-4).
And further to Colossians, the apostle wrote: For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; that their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God; and of the Father, and of Christ; in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (2:1-3).
And concerning those verses from Colossians, Rev Matthew Henry pointed ou, The treasures of wisdom are hidden not from us, but for us, in Christ.
And all of the aforementioned verses are in harmony with our Lord’s offering of thanks to the Father when he prayed: I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes (Matthew 11:25).
As regenerate souls in Christ, we recognize God’s word is truth (John 17:17). And because it is truth, we rely upon it to help us as we journey on as pilgrims and strangers bound for glory. The wise of this world rely upon their own understanding of the things which will lead them to only one place. Hell is full of those who did what was right in their own eyes (Judges 21:25). Who viewed themselves as being righteous by their own efforts (Revelation 3:17). We may safely refer to such behavior as the way of Cain and is so-called because Cain— and others like him— rejected God’s standards and set them aside for those of his own choosing (Jude 3-19). The wise and the prudent of this world in our Lord’s day— such as the scribes, and Pharisees— are fit examples of those who used their knowledge and wisdom for personal gain. Today, the wise can be found within the body of Christ serving in various capacities. They might be seminary doctors, clergy or even lay people. And like those of our Lord’s day, they too are his enemies through their rejection of him as the Christ, the only begotten of the Father. However, they are not without a lord and master. For in their rejection of the living Christ, they have embraced another Jesus— which is Antichrist— and another gospel— which is the false gospel of perdition (see Galatians 1:6-9).
As faithful followers of our Lord Jesus Christ, we have been commanded to avoid the unequal yoke of fellowship with those who are not in keeping with the fundamentals of the Christian faith. And that will not be easy. Remember that Satan’s mortal agents within the various churches have worked very hard to deceive and trap the unwary and the unlearned by misrepresenting truth of God’s word. They will attempt to press the faithful within said bodies to compromise and dialogue with those who bear only the name of Christ but not his nature. Now it should be understood that every form of compromise will require at least one party to give up something in hopes of gaining something else. And what are the usual and expected items to be sacrificed by Christians in any compromise with the unregenerate? In every case they are the tenets of sound Christian doctrine. And to that end, Satan desires that all regenerate believers give and not get. He wants to replace the unity of all under our Lord with a unity of all under his rule and authority (see II Corinthians 6:14-18 and Revelation 13:1-18). It’s as if we are reliving Genesis 11 and the attempt by Satan’s man, Nimrod, to unite all humanity together under a single leader. Eventually, all who reject the one true Christ of Scripture will worship the Dragon and the Beast (Revelation 13:1-7).
Beloved in Christ, biblical doctrines matter. They matter because it is through them that we are informed about our relationship with the Godhead. And sound biblical doctrines have been paid for not only in the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, but in the blood of countless Christian martyrs who stood up for the truth of God’s word in the face of all manner of persecutions. If we have any understanding of the truth of Jesus Christ, we ought to be filled with thanks to God for the sacrifice of those who went before us in the faith. And in that light, should we not exercise great care in preserving what has been handed down to us? Should we not resist the Devil and his pernicious followers who are merely wolves in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15)? Absolutely!
It is important for everyone who has been born again of the Spirit to resist the temptation to follow after those whose earthly credentials give them an appearance of godly wisdom, but whose hearts are cut from the same cloth as those of the scribes and Pharisees of our Lord’s day. Just as those evil men hid behind their monikers of piety and religion, so do their contemporaries within the Christian Church. The modernists are ashamed of the risen Lord whose name they bear because his true nature does not fit within their jaded and compromised definition of the Christian faith. We must ever be watchful and on our guard against their offers of compromise and dialogue. You can count on their master sending them to us, and so we must be ready at all times to stand for God’s truth clothed in our spiritual armor.
We need to know what is in our bibles and not what is in the latest book by Rev/Mr. or Ms. So-in-So. Neither are we to embrace the pronouncements of Bishop This-or-That. We need to hear the truth of God’s word from a believing minister and not sit Sunday after Sunday in a church where God’s word is twisted and tortured by Rev./Pastor Mr. or Ms. Such-in-Such who would not know the living Christ if he suddenly appeared before them. It is my hope that each of you will develop a lively faith in Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord. That you will seek to live in obedience to God’s will as found within the pages of Scripture. And in that vein, I admonish each of you to be wise in Christ and to prepare yourselves so that you are not caught unawares. Avoid the web of lies that has been spun by Satan’s cronies within the church. Keep to God’s word written and steer clear of all who will not follow it. And may the God of Peace bless and keep you all in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Let us pray,
D |
EAR Father Almighty, who has given to us the free gift of salvation through thine only begotten Son; keep us from all deception, and give us hearts that are ever ready to resist until the end; so that at the last, we need not be ashamed to stand before thy Son and give an account of our lives in thy service; and these things we ask in that name which is above every name even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Have a blessed week,

Bishop Dennis Campbell’s Sermon
Bishop Dennis is a brilliant speaker. He is able to take biblical precepts and make them perfectly understandable, even to me. When he provides the text of his sermons I take the utmost pleasure in passing them on:
The Story of Redemption
Part II
First Sunday after Christmas Day
January 1, 2023
Today’s sermon is a continuation of last Sunday’s on the Story of Redemption. There is a sense in which every real sermon is about the story of redemption, because redemption is the second most important theme of the Bible. God is the first theme, of course. But sermons usually expound only a small part of that story, focusing on a single passage, or verse, or, sometimes, just a single word in the Bible. But a couple of times each year I like to talk about the Bible as as whole. I do this because I believe it is important that we understand the flow of historical events in the Bible. I also believe it is even more important that we see that the Bible tells a story. It is a unity. It is easy for us to become so focused on learning verses and getting life and faith lessons from individual Bible verses that we fail to see the book as a whole. If we are not careful, we may begin to look at the Biblical books in isolation, like an anthology of Christian literature rather than as one story. The works of C. S. Lewis are familiar to most of us, and many of his works have been published as collected works, with titles like, C. S. Lewis Signature Classics, or, The Inspirational Writings of C. S. Lewis. Some of you probably own those collections, as do I. Some people see the Bible as that kind of collection of inspired and holy books. Even if you don’t know much about C.S. Lewis, you probably know about his Chronicles of Narnia. These seven books are about the history of an imaginary place called Narnia. Each of the books is about key events in that history and each book is an integral part of the saga. They chronicle Narnia. We can use this as an illustration of the Bible. It is more than a collection of holy books, it is a story, a chronicle, a history of God’s redeeming grace at work in this world. It is the story of redemption
The Bible records actual, real events. It is a book of real history, His Story. That makes it very different from the Narnia books, and from pagan religions. Zeus and Venus were not real beings. They never lived on Mount Olympus, and never did the things written about them. Isis never existed. Thor never walked the earth, and Odin never lived in Asgard. Their stories are myths, not history. But the real Abraham left the real Ur for the real Canaan. Real slaves were led out of real Egypt by the real Moses. David was a real king of the real Israel. Real wise men came to Bethlehem to see the real Jesus Christ, and the real Herod tried to kill Him. The real Jesus lived in the real Nazareth, walked on real water, raised real dead people, was really crucified, really dead, really buried, really rose from the dead, and really ascended into the real Heaven. And the real Jesus Christ is coming back to judge the real quick and the real dead. The Bible records these real, historical events. But it is doing more than preserving history. The Bible is telling the story of God’s redeeming grace. The Bible tells the story of redemption in Jesus Christ.
Christ permeates the entire Bible. Christ is the seed of woman who bruises the serpent’s head. Christ is the One whose heel is bruised by the serpent. Christ is the Passover Lamb who saves His people by His blood. Christ is the sacrifice on the Day of Atonement. Christ is the High Priest who offers the sacrifices for sin. in the Temple Christ is the Lamb sacrificed for sin, and the altar is the cross on which He is offered. Christ is Immanuel, God with us in Isaiah 7:14. Christ is the Man of Sorrows who heals our souls by His stripes (crucifixion) in Isaiah 53. Christ is the Ruler who comes out of Bethlehem, and Christ is the Messiah who brings in the Kingdom of Peace and Righteousness in which people can at last beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. The Old Testament is about Him from beginning to end. Christ Himself said if we believe what Moses wrote in the Old Testament, we would believe in Him, for Moses wrote of Him (Jn. 5:46).
There is a sense in which the Old Testament is the book of God’s Promises Given, and the New Testament is the book of God’s Promises Kept. The promises given are kept, fulfilled, in Jesus Christ. The promise to make Abraham a great nation is fulfilled in Christ. The promise through Micah that many peoples will come into the house of the God of Israel is fulfilled in Christ. The old Israel, which was primarily confined to one nation, is, in Christ, fulfilled in the New Israel, which transcends all national, ethnic, cultural, and time barriers. This New Israel is called the Church and Body of Christ. The salvation of those who are condemned by the Law is accomplished by Christ who became Man and went to the cross where He bore in Himself the price of our redemption. He suffered the wrath of God in our places. He was punished for our transgressions. The full revelation of God is accomplished in Christ, who said if we have seen Him we have seen the Father (Jn. 14:9-11).
The New Testament, is the continuing story of Redemption as the message of the Gospel goes into the world. The Gospels record the life and ministry of Christ, by whom the work of Redemption is accomplished. The Book of Acts records the spread of the Gospel into the Mediterranean world. By the end of Acts there are Churches in Africa, Asia, and Europe. The Epistles explain the Gospel. In them we find the meaning and purpose of the ministry of Christ expounded and applied so it can always be understood through the successive generations around the world.
I have called Jesus Christ the full revelation of God, yet that revelation is veiled in the sense that it is not fully recognized. Christ came to earth within the limitations of time and space. He came in humility to be rejected and crucified. Many hear His words, but fail to recognize the voice of God. Many hear of His cross, but fail to recognize Who is giving Himself up to that death. These things are veiled to such people. But He will come again in power. In that day the veil will be removed. Every eye will see Him. Every knee will bow to Him. In that day He will bring the story of Redemption to its close. In that day His enemies will be conquered. Satan, sin, ungodliness death and hell will be cast out of His presence forever. He will gather His people to Himself in a place where all suffering and sin will be ended forever. In that Land we will see Him with our own eyes as Adam and Eve saw Him walking with them in the Garden. In that day all our questions will be answered and our joy will be complete. The sorrows of this present life, if remembered at all, will only serve to highlight the glories of the New World. All things will be brought together under Christ, who will rule in grace and peace forever.
Thus, it would seem, ends the story of redemption. The purpose of God in His creation has been accomplished. Fallen people have been called into fellowship with God and redeemed by the blood of Christ. Evil has been conquered forever, and the people of God live in peace and righteousness. This is what the history of the Bible is all about. But, the end is really just the beginning of the new story, which, as C.S. Lewis wrote in The Chronicles of Narnia “goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.”
People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.
The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.
Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?
No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.
What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.
How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.
What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.
Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!
Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.
Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells
While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.
The most common cause of death related to multiple myeloma is infection, with pneumonia being the most common fatal infection. Other common causes of death are bleeding (from low platelet counts), complications of bone fractures, kidney failure, and blood clots in the lungs.

Michael Baran – End stage congestive heart failure. 20 March 20 at 10:56 AM To all my friends and family I had to go to the hospital in Rochester NY where I had my implant mechanical heart assist pump placed in my abdomen. I have end stage heart failure. On Wednesday I had to go to the hospital I was in need of a wheelchair I was very weak and I needed to have someone push me because I got short of breath, and I was so weak, I needed assistance to get up out of the wheelchair. I had to do a walk test and I had to have help to stand up my blood pressure was so low. I fell back In to the wheel chair. I tried to walk after they got me up and was able to use the hand rail and walk about a hundred feet there were two aids behind me I had to stop and nearly collapsed. They kept me from going down. After all the tests were done the Nurse practitioner reviewed over the results. I had one valve replaced about 6 months ago. But now the other 3 are leaking, there is not much they can do for me.
Yesterday I prayed that if God didn’t need me here. to take me home. I long to be free of this old body and to see my Lord, my family and friends that have gone on to their rewards, to be with them evermore. I told the Lord if he needs me here then he needs to renew my strength so that I can walk.
I woke up this morning and felt good. I got up to go to the bathroom and to my surprise I did not struggle to stand up!!! I actually walked to the bathroom without a walker. I am back in bed crying as I write this to you as the Holy Spirit brought to my mind Isaiah 40:31 ..Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength and shall soar on wings like eagles they will run and not grow weary they shall walk and not faint.
I have been unable to walk more than 100 ft or so, for the last six months in the last two weeks my oxygen saturation was as low as 74 and unable to walk without a walker. have a lift chair-recliner in the TV room. I am now able to get up without it.!!!
My God is an awesome God he has heard my prayers and has indeed strengthened me.!!!

Columbiq
I am writing to request your prayers for Colombia, my country. At this moment frightful things are happening, a great diabolical shadow is cast over this nation.
- The Constitutional Court in a tyrannical way has decriminalized the crime of abortion in Colombia, even up to six months. This is an illegitimate process, the court is legislating, something that is not within the competence of the judges, on the other hand the issue of abortion was a cause judged in 2006, which is why it should not be judged again in 2022. But socialist groups, international elites, social engineers and feminist groups have not given up on the issue. They want to traffic in death.
- The candidate of the extreme left Gustavo Petro is close to become the president of Colombia, this is a man who in his youth was a guerrilla criminal, a vile and despicable man who has always served the interests of drug trafficking, he was an advisor to Chavez who implanted Communism in Venezuela, his second home is Communist Cuba.
- The same court approved the movement of Gustavo Petro called: la Colombia Humana, it gave him the status of a political party, with this, he has the possibility of getting to introduce at least 15 congressmen, basically he is close to kidnapping all the powers, he already has the judicial power in his pocket, he only lacks the executive and the legislative. We are close to the precipice, we trust in a miracle of God.
We hope you support us with your prayers, I will ask the brothers to pray unceasingly so that in his mercy we will be saved from these perverse men. God bless you and keep you in all things.
Your servant in Christ,
Bishop José Antonio Rios

For Our Country
Our country has lost its way. Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take. Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them. Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God. Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down. Down, into the depths of the pit. Pray people will recognize there is:
- One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
- All religions are not equal;
- All ways of life are not equal;
- The Bible holds the Key to Life;
- All rights come from God, not the State;
- Good;
- Bad;
- Evil;
- Right;
- Wrong;
- Allah is the Devil;
- Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.
Pray this recognition will not come too late. Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

[1] The act of circumcision is often used in Scripture as an allegory for The Law, that is the system of the 613 laws referred to as Mosaic Laws under which Jews operated since the time of Moses.
[2] The name Jesus, savior, is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua, which was originally Hoshea (Num. 13:8, 16), but changed by Moses into Jehoshua (Num. 13:16; 1 Chr. 7:27), or Joshua. After the Exile it assumed the form Jeshua, whence the Greek form Jesus. It was given to our Lord to denote the object of his mission, to save.
[3] Yet, do not misapprehend, we know but little of His Laws and the laws of the universe as He made them. Our grasp of the space time continuum is little beyond that possessed by those at Moses time. He is, was and always will be. We live in the present, remember the past and prepare for what will be, the best we can.
