Independence Day

Fifth Sunday after Trinity

Sunday Report

Saturday we celebrated Independence Day, 4 July 2015, Anno Domini which marked 239 years since the establishment of this country on the solid foundation of Divine Providence.  That would be God.

There is a marked tendency to think of the Fourth of July as just another holiday, perhaps special because of the fireworks.  It is not.  This day marks the establishment of the only successful Republic the world has ever seen.  It is a special country with special relationship with God.  It is not that God is on our side, but rather we are on God’s side.  If we lose that relationship, we lose the special nature of our country.

It is also a day to recall the cost of freedom.

We trust you and your families had the very best Independence Day.  While you were enjoying the day, we hope you took the time remember the terrible cost of our freedom and those who paid it for us.

One Nation, Under God will result in Liberty and Justice for all

When this country was founded, it drew its authority from God, that is our Creator, and acknowledged that the rights of citizens come from their creator, not from the government.  Our nation was unique, the most educated and successful men in the Colonies were the ones who began the independence movement; dedicated godly men who were well conversant with the history of the world.  They knew the frailty of man and his propensity for both ease and evil.  They knew the need for God’s guidance for the country and provided for freedom of religion.  Contrary to the current state of affairs in this country, they did not provide for freedom from religion.  They knew an ungodly country would quickly devolve into a democracy, nothing more than mob rule, which of course is actually a dictatorship of that incredibly small minority to rule the mob.

Since the late 1800s, forces have been at active work attempting to promote government as the solution to everything so that it might rule rather than facilitate.  The evolution movement was the first manifestation of that phenomena.  Government cannot be the final authority if God exists, so He must be denied.  Thus, a “theory” for which there is literally no evidence and which runs contrary to all other rules of science has been adopted as “settled science.”[1]  Note that both communism and national socialism deny the existence of God and base all their authority on force and legality.  It is a requirement for them to remove God from the world.  Likewise note both systems remove the authority and legitimacy of the nuclear family.  What they leave as a family no longer has the authority to raise children, women become instruments of the State turning out useful units to do the bidding of the State.  The  elderly, the ill, the mentally deficient, the lame are disposed of along with any who disagree.  And it is all legal, and thus for the State moral.

This is what happens when we have no longer the Rule of Law[2], but the Rule of Man[3].

Note – Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Adolf Hitler, Joesph Stalin, Mao Tse-Tung, Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh, all atheists, were all responsible for the murder of tens of millions of people.  Nothing any of them did was illegal, for their government under the Rule of Man legitimized their actions.  Just like Dred Scott, legal and moral are not the same when you follow God not.

Consider carefully the Prayer for our Country found on page 36 of the Book of Common Prayer.  Ask yourself if this is what we should be doing as a country and how close are we to such?

For Our Country.

A

LMIGHTY God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favour and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honourable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogancy, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard.  It is quite interesting that the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States.  Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church.  Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of the nation.

We hold our Independence Day dear to our hearts and it is one of our religious feasts or holidays.  A proper Red Letter Day!

The Collect.

O

ETERNALGod, through whose mighty power our fathers won their liberties of old; Grant, we beseech thee, that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain these liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen.

The Epistle comes from the Tenth Chapter of the Book of Deuteronomy beginning at the Seventeenth Verse:

T

HE LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward: he doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment. Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name. He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen..

Today’s Gospel started in the Fifth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Matthew beginning at the Forty-Third Verse:

J

ESUS said, Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

On the Constitution and Religion

Date: January 23, 1808

I consider the government of the United States as interdicted by the Constitution from intermeddling with religious institutions, their doctrines, discipline, or exercises. This results not only from the provision that no law shall be made respecting the establishment or free exercise of religion, but from that also which reserves to the States the powers not delegated to the United States. Certainly, no power to prescribe any religious exercise or to assume authority in any religious discipline has been delegated to the General Government. It must then rest with the States.

Thomas Jefferson

Third President, Founding Father

Author of much of the Constitution

letter to Samuel Miller

The American Revolution

But what do we mean by the American Revolution? Do we mean the American war? The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people; a change in their religious sentiments, of their duties and obligations. … This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and affections of the people was the real American Revolution.

John Adams

Founding Father and Second President of the United States (1813)

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered…I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies… The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.

Forgiveness

[One of the most unpopular of the Christian virtues] is laid down in the Christian rule, ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.’ Because in Christian morals ‘thy neighbour’ includes ‘thy enemy’, and so we come up against this terrible duty of forgiving our enemies.

Every one says forgiveness is a lovely idea, until they have something to forgive, as we had during the war. And then, to mention the subject at all is to be greeted with howls of anger. It is not that people think this too high and difficult a virtue: it is that they think it hateful and contemptible. ‘That sort of talk makes them sick,’ they say. And half of you already want to ask me, ‘I wonder how you’d feel about forgiving the Gestapo if you were a Pole or a Jew?’

So do I. I wonder very much. Just as when Christianity tells me that I must not deny my religion even to save myself from death by torture, I wonder very much what I should do when it came to the point. I am not trying to tell you in this book what I could do—I can do precious little—I am telling you what Christianity is. I did not invent it. And there, right in the middle of it, I find ‘Forgive us our sins as we forgive those that sin against us.’ There is no slightest suggestion that we are offered forgiveness on any other terms.

Judiciary

The truth is, that, even with the most secure tenure of office, during good behavior, the danger is not, that the judges will be too firm in resisting public opinion, and in defence of private rights or public liberties; but, that they will be ready to yield themselves to the passions, and politics, and prejudices of the day.

On Freedom (and Predestination)

It will be too late then to choose your side. There is no use saying you choose to lie down when it has become impossible to stand up. That will not be the time for choosing: it will be the time when we discover which side we really have chosen, whether we realised it before or not. Now, today, this moment, is our chance to choose the right side. God is holding back to give us that chance. It will not last forever. We must take it or leave it.

Every time you make a choice you are turning the central part of you, the part of you that chooses, into something a little different from what it was before. And taking your life as a whole, with all your innumerable choices, all your life long you are slowly turning this central thing either into a heavenly creature or into a hellish creature: either into a creature that is in harmony with God, and with other creatures, and with itself, or else into one that is in a state of war and hatred with God, and with its fellow-creatures, and with itself. To be the one kind of creature is heaven: that is, it is joy and peace and knowledge and power. To be the other means madness, horror, idiocy, rage, impotence, and eternal loneliness. Each of us at each moment is progressing to the one state or the other.

Most of the cultures of the past that we admire, respect and even romanticize had slaves. When we look back at their achievements and even try to forge some connection to them, it does not have to mean an endorsement of their worst habits… The left is so obsessed with creating utopias of the future that like the Taliban or ISIS, it destroys the relics of past societies that do not measure up to its impossible standards. And then it replaces them with imaginary utopias of the past that never existed… The Confederate flag is a matter of history. The racial tensions stirred up by Obama have actually gotten people killed. Slavery is not making a comeback… The Civil War ended long ago. The country would be a better place if modern racists who believe that some lives, whether black or white, matter more than others would stop trying to start one.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 195-196, with the Collect first:

G

The Collect.

RANT, O Lord, we beseech thee, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by thy governance, that thy Church may joyfully serve thee in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle came from the Third Chapter of the First Epistle of Saint Peter beginning at the Eighth Verse. Peter tells to be of one mind, have compassion and pity for each other, to be courteous, to give good to all our brethren, to return good for evil, to seek peace, to do good, not just talk good.  Peter tells us to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk.  To put ourselves in others’ places, understand when they fall short and make good things happen.

B

E ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts.

Today’s Holy Gospel started in the Fifth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Luke beginning at the First Verse. This is one of the classic stories of Jesus in the Bible.  Jesus had gone down to Lake Gennesaret to pray and then speak to the people.  As they pressed in on him, he asked Simon Peter to use his boat as a speaking platform.  Speaking from a small boat near the beach is almost like speaking in an amphitheatre.  When he finished talking to the people, he told Simon Peter to go out and set his nets.  Simon pointed out they had fished all night with no result, but at His word, he would set his net.  The net gathered an incredible catch that Simon Peter and his friends could not board.  At that point, it was clear to Simon Peter he was in the presence of one far greater than himself.  He fell to his knees, saying, “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”  Then Jesus said, “Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.”  From then on Simon Peter followed Jesus.

Do not misunderstand, every day Jesus speaks to you telling you what to do.  It is your choice, you can listen like Simon Peter, or you can ignore Jesus.  He has the pony for the lottery.  He wants to give it to you, all you have to do is accept.  While He is a bit more subtle than a Drill Instructor, the question is the same, “Can you hear me?”

There are none so deaf as those who will not hear.

I

T came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, and saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: and so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

Unless a Christian or a minister is called of God, he will not follow Jesus. He must be both called and chosen. This principle is born out more acutely in today’s text. It is the THIRD calling of Peter, James and John – and it is the EFFECTUAL calling of the three for they forsook all and followed Him on this Third calling. Peter, especially, seemed one who was hard-headed of hearing. The Lord had called Peter to follow Him three times, He had told Peter that he would deny Him three times, He asked Peter, “Lovest thou me?” three times, and He told Peter to “Take and eat” (Acts 10) three times. This latter calling to take and eat had nothing to do with the ceremonial food laws, but the acceptance of the Gentiles into the church. There is an overruling principle here that our Lord will not give us rest when He calls and chooses His disciples. He will continue the call in increasing intensity until the Spirit has prepared the heart to respond. In human reason and logic, which covets its own will, this principle is resisted to the end that salvation comes to rest upon human will and not that of God. For the three callings of the three, see John 1:35-42, Matthew 4:18-22, & this present text above.

As the 17th Article of Religion confirms, based on many Scriptural proofs, and which I quote in part:

XVII. Of Predestination and Election

Predestination to Life is the everlasting purpose of God, whereby (before the foundations of the world were laid) he hath constantly decreed by his counsel secret to us, to deliver from curse and damnation those whom he hath chosen in Christ out of mankind, and to bring them by Christ to everlasting salvation, as vessels made to honour. Wherefore, they which be endued with so excellent a benefit of God, be called according to God’s purpose by his Spirit working in due season: they through Grace obey the calling: they be justified freely: they be made sons of God by adoption: they be made like the image of his only-begotten Son Jesus Christ: they walk religiously in good works, and at length, by God’s mercy, they attain to everlasting felicity.

God calls and chooses, and He does not relent. He will have that which He lays claim to. “Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.” (Matt 20:15-16) “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.(John 15:16) He had chosen you, too, if you are a disciple of Christ, and the Holy Spirit drew you nigh unto God as a fisher’s hook in the jaw.

Now to the greater detail of today’s Gospel Text: Jesus stands on the shore of the Galilean Sea (Gennesaret) and saw two ships standing there unoccupied. He chose the ship belonging to Simon Peter. When God chooses His Elect, He also chooses their all – “lock, stock, and barrel!” Ask your mom or dad if you know not what this latter term means, or see the footnote of the written version of this sermon[4]. All that you own, have owned, or ever will own, belongs to God the Father. We can give nothing to Heaven but that which Heaven has given to us.

. . . . and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. There were so many people pressing about Jesus that He needed a separation from them to preach. Today, the minister may get so close to the people that he will begin to preach what THEY want to hear, and not that which God has spoken in the secret chamber. I believe humor is important for health and happiness; however, when in the pulpit, it should not be the center of attraction. The Gospel is serious, and we must be serious in preaching it. So we separate ourselves by some distance when preaching. That is the purpose of the pulpit and, I might add, the true minister will separate himself from his own worldly thoughts, too, when preaching. Jesus sat down and taught the people as was His frequent custom. He did so because He was the Teacher – He had the Authority.

Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. This was most certainly early morning since the ships were sitting idle and the fishermen were cleaning their nets (which they did always after a night of fishing). Jesus has fully orchestrated this moment from before the foundation of the world. He has the chosen disciples, He has the boat, He has the soul hungry people on shore, and He has the great sea filled with fish who also respond to His call. But the command of Jesus to the disciples (Peter, James, and John), does not seem at all rational. The morning sun is not a good time to fish since the fish are not feeding at that hour and they can also more easily see the net. The best time is in the darkness of the night, and the disciples had been fishing all night long without profit.

We are very much like these three disciples. We labor in earnest but nothing seems to avail. But when Christ arrives on the scene, and we do His bidding, the results will be quite different!  5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.  It is obvious that Simon (Peter) has the stuff disciples are made of for he was willing to ignore his own impulses and follow the command of the Lord – even if it defied all reason to Simon. Why can we not all say, with regard to personal affairs, and national policy, “nevertheless at thy word.” “No matter how little your Word makes sense to me, Lord, I will nevertheless, like a good soldier of the line, obey without hesitation!”

We make strong nets to catch fish, and large and elaborate buildings to accommodate worshippers, but these are never sufficient to the purpose when God is in the matter. 6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. I would love to have seen the expressions on the faces of the disciples, and the crowd ashore, when so many fish were gathered as to break the net! Why are we always surprised when God performs a great work or miracle in our lives? And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. The work of preaching and evangelizing is not a one-man show – it is a joint effort of the Church. We must trust and depend upon one another to help in the harvest. But the tremendous returns of God to our meager investments of labor are dwarfed at the blessing and size of it! “And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.” No one at Galilee had ever witnessed such a prolific catch of fish – and what an unusual hour for it! If we labor not to harvest the crop, God will set our fields on fire. If we hear His Voice and obey, He will bring forth showers of blessing. There was not an un-amazed observer either at sea or on the shore that day in Galilee.

Only God commands the sea and the creatures of the deep. Peter, though a common sense kind of seaman, was overcome with astonishment at this miracle and knew, without doubt, that he was in the presence of the Lord of Heaven! So did his comrades know it. The question is this: Do YOU really know it? In your quiet times in closet on by the sea, do you know and feel the presence of the Lord of Heaven? And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. Truly. Peter became just that as well as the other two disciples present.

This third calling of Christ to the disciples – Peter, James, and John – was an effectual calling as evidenced by the last verse: “And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.” We also must bring our catch to shore, or to Heaven. God may have called you to His bosom many times, but you have yet to respond. Have you yet forsaken all and followed Jesus?

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly  contained in the forewords above.

Consider these words from the Collect:

the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by thy governance, that thy Church may joyfully serve thee in all godly quietness

In the Collect, we ask that the events of this world might follow God’s governance or will.  Why?  Because in those places where it does, we find happiness and joy.  It is that simple, it means more, reflect on that.  After all, amazing is it not?  Since the Garden, it has always been one of the two same choices:

  1. We follow God’s Will for us, we do what is good for us, individually and as a people or a country.  It is hard work, but easier than we imagined; we prosper when all goes well.  It was all our doing, we are happy because we were so smart.

  1. We ignore God’s instructions, doing what we want to do, not what we are supposed to do.  It turns out to be way harder than we thought possible, in the end everything turns to weasel spit.  It was not our fault, it was God’s fault, He is punishing us.

As long as we are human, imperfect creatures with free will, it will never change for humanity.  But, we individually can change, and with enough individuals changing, humanity will change.  We can learn from the past and live for the future in Him who gave His Life that we might be free eternally. This is a very similar theme to last Sunday’s sermon, with very good reason. It applies to almost every single lesson in the Bible, which is to do God’s will, above what you want to do. Every time we do what we want to do instead of what God wants us to do, we fail. But when we do what God wants us to do, we succeed! Even though we want to do what we do, rather than what God wants us to do, it is better for us in the end to do what God wants us to do.  Doing what God Asks = Happiness, Not doing what God Asks = unhappiness, to put it into mathematical terms!

So, how do we make our little part of this world follow God’s will? Peter tells to be of one mind, have compassion and pity for each other, to be courteous, to give good to all our brethren, to return good for evil, to seek peace, to do good, not just talk good.  Peter tells us to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk.  We have to start first with ourselves and allow the Holy Ghost intou our hearts to transform us. After we are transformed by the Holy Ghost, only then can we truly be able to help others. It will not happen right away, but it is a steady and continuous process, in fact taking most of our lifetime here on earth. But while we are being transformed, we can do our best to help others. But we must realize that it is only through God we can help others, and not to us only. To put ourselves in others’ places, understand when they fall short and make good things happen. The key word is “walk”, to act upon the teachings of Christ, and not just utter them and not do them. All of us, including myself struggle with this, but as long as we are DOING our best, and not just saying it, then that is all He asks of us.  We cannot do more than our best. We must be doing our best and not just faking doing our best. There is a sincere difference between the two. If you are sincere, people will know it. If you are not sincere, people will also know it too.

So, just how do we make good things happen?  Fairly simple, do what God asks! Follow the Summary of the Law and all shall be well in ones life. Every moral law hangs off of the Summary of the Law “Love your God with all your heart soul and your mind, and Love thy Neighbor as thyself.”. These two commandments are all where the Ten Commandments originate and thus what all the moral laws of the universe are governed by. They are the ultimate benchmark for us, which we should try and do our best to meet. This is an extremely common theme again! Doing what God asks is the answer to all of our problems if you think about it! Don’t figure out ways to seem to do what He asks, while doing what you want.  Don’t be a Pharisee! Consider when Jesus told Simon Peter to go out and set his nets.  Simon was tired, he was hungry, he had fished all night with no result.  After making excuses, he decided to do what he was told! There is a lesson there, instead of making excuses why things are the way they are, why not be quiet and do God’s will instead? It will have a lot better results that is for sure, like Simon Peter and his nets!  The net gathered an incredible catch that Simon Peter and his friends could not board.

That is what happened to Simon Peter; that is what will happen to you, if you will but listen. Listening and then acting are the key principles of this Gospel, we must listen to what He says, and then ACT upon it.

Do not misunderstand, every day Jesus speaks to you telling you what to do.  It is your choice, you can listen like Simon Peter or you can ignore Jesus.  He has the pony for the lottery.  He wants to give it to you, all you have to do is accept.  While He is a bit more subtle than a Drill Instructor, the question is the same, “Can you hear me?” The problem with us is that we just do not want to hear. That is why we need the Holy Ghost to open up our ears, that we might hear and obey.

There are none so deaf as those who will not hear.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Pressing and Serving

Fifth Sunday after Trinity

July 5, 2015

The Scriptures for this morning bring two important truths before us. They are important because they are the word of God. But they are also important because of their particular relevance to our situation.

The first is found in the Gospel reading in the words of Simon Peter, who fell down at Jesus’s knees and cried, “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” We read in this passage that the people pressed upon Christ to hear the word of God.  People crowded around our Lord. They attempted to get near to Him. They strained to hear His words.  The Apostle Paul once wrote, “woe is me if I preach not the Gospel.” These people seem to believe, “woe is me if I hear not the Gospel.”

Indeed, woe is anyone who hears not the Gospel. The word, “Gospel” is a combination of two English words, “God” and “spelled.” When we talk about giving or receiving instruction we often say we want it spelled out for us. And when we talk about the Gospel we are talking about instructions and guidance which God has spelled out for us.  In one sense, the entire Bible is God spelled. But when Paul wrote, “woe is me if I preach not the Gospel,” he referred to message of the life and ministry of Christ; specifically his death and resurrection by which He accomplished our forgiveness and reconciled us to God. This is the way we generally use the word “Gospel” today.

It is rare to have people press upon us to hear the Gospel. There is, instead, an animosity toward the Gospel today. I don’t have statistics, but it would be my guess that the majority of people today either profess a religion other than Christianity, or have a hazy belief in an undefined god, or profess agnosticism or atheism. Even those who claim Christianity are often doctrinally confused or hold erroneous views on important doctrinal issues. How I wish people today would press upon us to hear the word of God.

There is a contrast drawn here between these people who press to hear the word of God, and Peter, who cries, “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man O Lord.” And yet there is also similarity between the people and Peter. Both want the Word, but Peter knows that he has no right to press upon the Lord. He is a sinner, and is completely unworthy to be in the Lord’s presence at all.

The truth I am trying to get at here is that we all, like Peter, are sinful people. “All we, like sheep have gone astray. “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” No matter how hard we have tried, how good we have tried to be, or how successful we have been at living decent, moral, God fearing lives, we have all failed at some point.  If we are honest with ourselves, we will see that we have failed at many points, and that our failure to fully and joyfully keep the commandments of God is a common and almost constant aspect of our lives.  It is not that we have necessarily fallen into the “big sins.”  It is that we have followed God on our own terms instead of His, and that is the very heart of sin.  So we are sinners.  We need to allow that truth to enter our minds when we look at the world and its ways.  Yes, the world is a wicked place.  Yes, its people are sinners.  Yes, its ways destroy lives and families and nations and cultures, and souls.  But, except for the grace of God, except for the redeeming work of Christ, except for the Holy Spirit calling us to faith and enabling us to believe the Gospel, we would be just like everyone else in the world.

The second truth is found in the Epistle reading.  It is; “if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye.”  Most of today’s churches and preachers present Christ as a life enhancing commodity, as though He exists to give us a purposeful, happy, or prosperous life.  But the sad truth is that Christians suffer, and, sometimes we suffer just because we are Christians.  In our own time, people are persecuted and killed for the crime of being Christians.  And this is not a new thing.  From the very beginning, Christians have paid with their lives.  Stephen was stoned to death. With the exception of John, all of the Apostles died as martyrs.  The Romans allowed the Jews to kill Christians because it distracted the Jews from their constant attempts to overthrow Rome.  Saul was on a mission to Damascus to capture Christians and take them to Jerusalem for execution when Christ appeared to Him on the Damascus road.  Nero blamed Christians for the great fire in Rome, and for the first 300 years of Christian history the Church was hated and her people were hunted, tortured, crucified, and fed to the beasts in coliseums throughout the Roman Empire.  We have no way of knowing how many Christians died in the Coliseum in Rome, but we know it was used for executing criminals, and Christians were considered criminals.

The first missionaries to many countries were often executed.  Paul, himself was almost executed by stoning.  He only survived because his attackers stopped stoning him because they thought he was dead.  On June 15th of this year Elisabeth Elliot died.  You may remember her as the wife of missionary Jim Elliot who was killed by the Huaorani tribe in Ecuador in 1956.  He was murdered by the people he went to tell about Christ.  Elisabeth Elliot did not like the emotional romantic way missions are presented in many churches today.  She considered missions and dangerous and difficult calling.  According to her, “missionaries don’t go, they ‘go forth,’ they don’t walk, they ‘tread the burning sands,’ they don’t die, they ‘lay down their lives.’”

She was also critical other sentimental, emotional trends in the Church. In a talk in Kansas City she said; “Don’t get in touch with your feelings, submit radically to God, and do what is right no matter what.  Suffering is normal.  Have you no scars, no wounds, with Jesus on the Calvary road?”  To ministers, she said, “I don’t think you should say, ‘Pursue joy with all your might.’  I think you should say, ‘Pursue obedience with all your might.’”

Her words summarise what I am trying to say today.  Too often we expect Jesus to make life easy for us, to protect us from every hurt, and to give us a giddy kind of emotional high, which we confuse with Christian joy.  Instead, He often calls us to sacrifice and suffer for His cause and in His service.  This is what the Apostle Peter is telling us in the Epistle.  Expect it.  Expect to have to put your feelings aside to obey Christ.  Expect to have to put your happiness aside to follow Christ.  Expect that obedience to Him will make you uncomfortable sometimes.  Expect Him to make you do some things you don’t want to do, and stop doing some things you do want to do.  Expect obedience to be costly.  It has cost many Christians everything.  Make up your mind to be obedient, no matter what it costs.

Fifth Sunday after Trinity

In the End, we will win

5 July 2015

1 Peter 3:8-15a  •  Luke 5:1-11

 The Fifth Sunday after Trinity.

G

The Collect.

RANT, O Lord, we beseech thee, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by thy governance, that thy Church may joyfully serve thee in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

In these most turbulent times we must look to the Word of God to find comfort and peace.

It is so hard at times for us to see anything good coming out of all the chaos that we see on a daily basis.  And yet, we must understand that the Victory is His. Because Jesus died on the Cross he made all things right for eternity. The flaws of the Garden would be reversed. A new heaven and a new earth will be created, all because when Jesus Christ uttered those words “…it is finished”.   He was telling us and Satan that all was completed. The disease, death, sorrow, uncertainties, ravages of time on our earthly bodies, all that would now be overcome.

Stop shooting our wounded.

Christians have the propensity to attack the wounded brethren instead of helping them. We are so interesting in majoring in the minors, {there are many examples of this in church history}, that we forget the overarching theme of God’s love towards us.  “…while we were yet sinners, Christ died for our sins…”   The Gospel that should be preached to the unsaved, the lost, to those who are on the broad path, that is tantamount to what we as followers of Christ need to be doing.    As we carefully read the passage from 1 Peter 3:8-15, consider the words of Peter as he wrote of reconciliation not retribution in the life of believers in his day.  It really isn’t any different today. We need to stand with believers in other faith groups when we face the evil that is attacking the Church that seems to have no bounds.

(1 Peter 3:8-15a)

Please understand this isn’t a surrender of the orthodox tenets of Scripture as presented in the received texts, no this is where agreement in Christ-like matters are apparent.  We do not lay aside our beliefs in the name of unity, no we just agree on those aspects of other believers that are based on true reading of the Word of God.

The following passage from the book of Romans is an excellent point in what is important as to the life we should be living for Christ.  The careful reading of the Word will keep you from error.

N

ow I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.  For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.  For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.  And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. (Romans 16:17-20)

Our Legacy

This day after our national celebration of independence we need to acknowledge we have a great legacy to look up to and to remember.

Most especially we should remember all those who served our country in her time of need. Those who‘…all gave some, some gave all…’ — they should never be forgotten.

We must pray to our Father in heaven to forgive us as a nation for turning our backs upon Him.  We must pray for reformation, a turning from our wickedness, repenting of the same and seeking the Lord…while He may be found.  We must stop this mindless plunge into the abyss; for if we don’t, God will declare us Ichabod.

In the End

If we understand in the end, God’s peace and the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ is the only concept that will live in eternity, ALL evil will be vanquished. Satan will be overthrown, he will be in power no more, {in power over the evil on earth}.  We will win because we are with Christ. He is our King of kings and Lord of lords.   Amen and amen.

Now is the time of your salvation; are you with the King of kings and Lord of lords?

Let us pray:

A

lmighty God, who in the former time didst lead our fathers forth into a wealthy place, and set their feet in a large room; Give Thy grace, we humbly beseech Thee, to us their children, that we may always approve ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Defend our liberties; preserve our unity; save us from lawlessness and violence, from discord and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Fashion into one godly people the multitude brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those whom we entrust in Thy Name with the authority of governance, to the end that there may be good government at home and peace with all the world. In the time of prosperity fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble suffer not our trust in Thee to fail. All which we ask for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

O

God, whose Name is excellent in all the earth, and Thy glory above the heavens; who on this day didst inspire and direct the hearts of our delegates in Congress to lay the foundations of our national peace, liberty, and safety; We bless and adore Thy glorious Majesty for all Thy loving kindness manifested towards this land and people; and we humbly beseech Thee to continue Thy goodness to us, that the heritage received from our fathers may be preserved in our time, and be transmitted unimpaired to the generations to come; that all nations of the earth may know that Thou, O Lord, art our Savior and mighty Deliverer, and our King for ever. Grant this, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O

God, whose kingdom ruleth over all; Bestow Thy blessing, we beseech Thee, upon those who hold the civil authority in this state and nation, that by their right administration of the laws and our careful obedience to the same, we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, in all godliness and honesty; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

T

HE Lord bless us, and keep us. The LORD make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The LORD lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Fifth Sunday after Trinity

James 3:8-14

8   But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9  Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

There is a line out of a recent western movie that seems appropriate to mention. In a particular scene, one of the characters has just finished a cursed-filled diatribe to which the other character responded, “You kiss your momma with that mouth?” How often do we hear those around us “venting their spleens” with vile and bitter language? Some do such without much thought; while for others it is a conscious act of verbal violence meant to demean and degrade. In Psalm 32:9, we are instructed to be, …not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle… which means that we ought to exercise self-control in all that we do. The fact that one can be urged to revile others with language that is not the least bit conducive to edifying reveals that person’s level of self-restraint, or as the limbo dancers are asked, “How low can you go?”

Probably the most used epithets are those which contain the name of God. The Third Commandment reads, Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain(Exodus 20:7). This sin is now so much a part of our vocabulary that many will utter his holy name without even thinking about. God gave us that commandment to remind all humanity that he is the Almighty God, the LORD of hosts, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and all that in them is (Acts 4:24). We have been made in his image and after his likeness, but we are finite and he is infinite. God is pure. God is holy. God is perfect. We are not to call upon him if we are not ready to truly address ourselves to him. Ergo, to flippantly throw his name out to others as an exclamation is demeaning to his glory, and to use his holy name in an epithet, is blasphemy. Still, have you ever noticed how people are so quick to treat our heavenly Father with disrespect? Why can’t they use the name of some pagan deity? I remember in an old tv series from the 1950’s, one of the principal characters used the exclamatory phrase of “by Jupiter” or the like to express his level of either approval or disapproval of a particular action. But in today’s world— across every field of endeavor— you will hear not only vile and vulgar language being used in ordinary conversation, but you will also hear the LORD’s name being used in such profane speaking.

How does God’s name vainly uttered aid the user? In point of fact, it doesn’t. The wicked are notoriously shortsighted and forgetful, but God is not. On that terrible day of judgment before the Great White Throne, they will be judged for every idle word that came forth from their mouths. What agony there will be on that day. There will be no escape, no appeal, and no advocate to stand beside them in their defense. God will hold them accountable for every vile jest, every filthy word, and every blasphemous remark. I have heard it said that the unregenerate excuse the use of their verbal barbs and wicked language with the offhand comment of, “Oh they’re just words.” Really? Such persons are being disingenuous at best and lying at worst. I would vote for them being liars because only the grossly unintelligent would not know that taking the LORD’s name in vain, especially when it has been hurled at another in a barrage of insults, is forbidden. These offenders know what they intend in their use of such language, and throwing God’s name into the mix adds weight and garners attention. It adds to the shock factor and is suppose to diminish the subject of the insult. How tragic that the name of God has become a tool to reduce another human being both mentally and emotionally. That is, after all, what cursing another was meant to do otherwise the speaker would not do it.

The apostle Paul reminded us that we should, …put off all… anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth (Colossians 3:8). Yes, the unregenerate of the world will, under the influence of evil, seek to have us lose control over ourselves releasing, as it were, those things in our minds that were once part of our old nature under the regime of the world, the flesh and the devil. But we must not permit it. The apostle urged us to be in control— to have self- control— so that we do not open the door to sin. When we vilify others in ways meant to harm them, then we are acting beyond the pale of biblical authority. God did not tell us to use bad language in our Christian witness. To rebuke, to chastize, or to admonish does not give us the right to use the devil’s tools in God’s service.

Now, you might say, Reverend, what can I do as a newly born-again Christian to overcome my past use of such words? Well, the answer is: You have to keep watch over your own self much as a soldier keeps his watch over his encampment. You have to be watchful. You have to be vigilant. You cannot expect Satan’s minions to take a break, to go on vacation or the like in their campaign against you . You have to stand your watch over all your faculties for that is your godly duty. You cannot be an effective Christian without exercising self-restraint. If you once were person given to harsh language, strive to rid yourself of it by learning new ways to express your feelings without resorting to vulgar comments. You should also seek God’s pardon for these and other errors. Our great and loving God has promised to forgive and to forget any sin which you bring before his throne of grace through the blood of his only begotten Son. But it is not enough to ask for forgiveness, one must then live in obedience to his will and commandment ever after. For only through a life devoted to God, will you truly reflect that state of liberty from the bondage of sin, more particularly, the sin of the loose and cursing tongue. Our heavenly Father loves us and he wants us to live eternally with him in his kingdom. The reviler, the blasphemer, the mean- spirited curser, or the like, cannot enter therein. So let your words be seasoned with salt and keep your tongue under control for that is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.

Let us pray,

G

ood and gracious God, who has not cursed us, but has blessed us with the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ; grant that by the indwelling of the Holy Ghost we thy servants will reject the language and customs of this world in order that we might embrace thy wholesome language which is from above; for this we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Here is an update from Daisy’s brother Galin:

My sister’s condition, as you know, has stabilized.  Daisy was transferred to Kaiser’s San Leandro Acute Care Rehab for therapy and wound vac care [as an aside, she’s been fortunate to have good roommates with good families].  My sister was recently fitted for her left prosthetic arm; it is controlled through the nerves, appears to be quite functional, and fairly easy to control.  Once that prosthetic is completed they will fit her for her right prosthetic arm.  The feet, however, are a different story.  While the wound vac has worked tremendously in healing her feet, they will need further healing before being fitted for prosthetics.

Kaiser will be discharging my sister on August 2.  So yes, she will be going home soon.  She’s looking forward to it.  She and we know there’s still a very long road ahead but I know she’ll be able to handle it.

Galin

Pray for peace of mind and trust in God for Daisy’s family, her husband and children Tiffany and Chris.

Mary Thornell has been battling colon cancer for three years now, she is currently treating at the City of Hope.  Things seem to be going well, the numbers seem headed in the right direction.  Good news received on 29 June from Mary and Jet:

Today we met with our Oncologist at the City of Hope to get the results of Mary’s cancer scan done last week. The scan shows a 50% reduction in all her lung tumors. It also shows no cancer anywhere else in her body, to include all organs and colon area.

The doctor was very pleased with Mary’s response to treatment which started in March 2015. She completed the Irinotecan (a very toxic chemo drug) regimen at the end of May. So the new protocol going forward will be called “Chemo Maintenance” every other week and will consist of Avastin, which is a drug developed by the City of Hope and also will continue with the 5FU pump which she has attached for 48 hours. For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

Lock, stock, and barrel is a merism (figure of speech) used predominantly in the United Kingdom and North America, meaning ‘all’, ‘total’, ‘everything’. The effective portions of a gun (or more specifically a rifle) are the lock (used to hold ready the sparking mechanism); the stock (the portion held), and the barrel (the aiming guide and conveyor for the explosive-driven ball). Collectively they are the weapon, therefore, everything.
