Today we celebrated the Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Things have changed

The true theory of our Constitution is surely the wisest and best, that the states are independent as to everything within themselves, and united as to everything respecting foreign nations. Let the general government be reduced to foreign concerns only, and let our affairs be disentangled from those of all other nations, except as to commerce, which the merchants will manage the better the more they are left free to manage for themselves, and our general government may be reduced to a very simple organization, and a very inexpensive one — a few plain duties to be performed by a few servants.

Time and Life

Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time; for that’s the stuff life is made of.

Benjamin Franklin

Poor Richard’s Almanac, 1746

When Times are Good

If the first and lowest operation of pain shatters the illusion that all is well, the second shatters the illusion that what we have, whether good or bad in itself, is our own and enough for us. Everyone has noticed how hard it is to turn our thoughts to God when everything is going well with us. We ‘have all we want’ is a terrible saying when ‘all’ does not include God. We find God an interruption. As St Augustine says somewhere, ‘God wants to give us something, but cannot, because our hands are full—there’s nowhere for Him to put it.’ Or as a friend of mine said, ‘We regard God as an airman regards his parachute; it’s there for emergencies but he hopes he’ll never have to use it.’ Now God, who has made us, knows what we are and that our happiness lies in Him. Yet we will not seek it in Him as long as he leaves us any other resort where it can even plausibly be looked for. While what we call ‘our own life’ remains agreeable we will not surrender it to Him. What then can God do in our interests but make ‘our own life’ less agreeable to us, and take away the plausible source of false happiness?

The Problem of Pain

A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.

Proverbs 19:5

O LORD, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things ; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.

Isaiah 25:1

These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates: and let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD.

Zechariah 8:16-17

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

St. Matthew 5:8

But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceeded from the Father, he shall testify of me.

St. John 15:26

Charge then that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.

I St. Timothy 6:17

He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

I St. John 5:10

We are saved now by regeneration. Regeneration and renewing are brought about by the Holy Spirit who makes us a new creature in Christ. This new life is the result of a change through cleansing from sin to holiness through the Holy Ghost who quickened and sanctified us by the Spirit to be led and guided, strengthened and helped by the Spirit.

Matthew Henry

17th and 18th century English pastor and author

We ought to be diligent Bible-readers because the Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. We shall never fight a good fight if we do not use it as our principal weapon. It may well be feared that there is not enough Bible-reading amongst us. It is not enough to have the book. We must actually read it and pray over it ourselves. It will do us no good if it only lies still in our houses. Knowledge of the Bible can only be got by hard, regular, daily, attentive wakeful reading. Memorized Scripture is a stronghold against sin in the hands of the Spirit.

Carnality and corruption creep into the spiritual and political realm of our life like cancer and deteriorate the whole fabric of state and society. Even the church is becoming a cold storage of Christians whose conscience, moral and spiritual values and witnesses are highly frozen forming a degraded crowd.

I continue to hope and pray that the seemingly inexorable march towards a rending of this Republic can be resolved peaceably, but I am a student of history, and know that once the citizenry has judged the government is a threat and not a servant, then that government will fall, or will continue down the path of becoming monsters, devouring the very people they are sworn to protect.

It’s well said that the surest way to rob a bank is to own the bank. The depositors just keep coming in, and week after week they give you money, you give them a receipt, [and] everybody’s happy. With socialism— and that’s closest to what we have— whole nations are the bank, and as with all conspiracies, you’re either in or you’re out, getting the payoff or paying the payoff, riding the wagon or pulling the wagon… And it’s a mature criminal enterprise which deploys market-tested brands— progressive, socialist, left, right, Republican, Democrat, communist and so forth— and an exit strategy. In other words, it’s a sting. The [real] beneficiaries are already world class wealthy, but they’re not quite done. When the weight of insolvency brings about an event horizon— and it will— then they’ll be done…By then they’ll have ownership of nearly all actual wealth, and in every form worth having… Everybody else, including the true believers and other useful idiots, will be holding worthless claims on [the] debt… [a] pile of worthless paper…

Remember that every time you see a masked protester caught in the act of throwing a rock or a loving couple huddled in fear of dark masked shapes in riot gear, these images are as artificial and posed as anything in an Abercrombie and Fitch catalog. They show you what is in front of the camera, not what is behind it. Look through the news reports of riots anywhere and you’ll see the same poses repeat across continents and generations. The rioters are different people with different causes and agendas, but the photos of them are being taken and selected by the same people from the same news agencies. There is never anything new on the news because the media has a pre-existing formula for handling any event. What we think of as the newspaper or the evening news just plugs actual news into its formula and turns it into propaganda.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 207-209, with the Collect first:

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY and merciful God, of whose only gift it cometh that thy faithful people do unto thee true and laudable service; Grant, we beseech thee, that we may so faithfully serve thee in this life, that we fail not finally to attain thy heavenly promises; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle came from Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, the Third Chapter beginning at the Sixteenth Verse. Paul reminds us, “To Abraham and his seed were the promises made.  He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.”  The Law, which came 430 years after this covenant, did not supersede the covenant.  The Law was “added because of transgressions, til the seed (Jesus) should come to whom the promise was made … Is the law then against the promises of God?”  No.  “… for is there had been a law given which could have given life, … righteousness should have been by the law.”  For the wages of sin are death, all sin and only those whose sins are set aside by the sacrifice of Jesus are freed from their debt.

T

o Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

Today’s Holy Gospel started in the Tenth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the Twenty-Third Verse.  Jesus tells one of the New Testament’s most widely spread stories, that of the Good Samaritan[1],[2].

Jesus was talking to the people, “And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”  The lawyer was about to learn the first lesson of lawyering, ‘Never ask a question you don’t to which know the answer.’  As was often the case, Jesus let the man answer his own question in response to a question from Him, “What is written in the law?  How readest thou?”

The man answered well, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.”

Jesus confirmed his answer, “Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.”

But, the man wanted more and asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?”

Among the Jews, it was clear they were to “Love thy neighbor as thy self;” but their view of their neighborhood was not too wide.  From Jesus’ story and question come a clear answer as to how big our neighborhood might be.

And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves?

To this question, the man answered, “He that shewed mercy on him.”

Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.  (Luke 10:23-37)

In order to fully understand the situation confronting Christ, we must observe that which the Lectionary failed to include – the preceding two verses that reveal the setting. In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him. (Luke10:21-22) Those whose high-minded thoughts are infatuated with the Self of the Ivory Tower will not understand the Words given by Christ here. Those men are much too good to get a handle on such simplicity as the Gospel represents. They must add to it their own complicated and sophisticated interpretations and render those in words which they can barely understand themselves and, certainly, not understood of those who are so simple as to know only Christ.

“And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt 18:2-4)  I am not so proud of my title as to be very happy to become a simple, little child for Christ. All of the lawyers, Scribes, and Pharisees gathered about not only would not believe, but refused to believe, the simple Gospel that had been given to the simple disciples of Christ. Note the grace of God evidenced in the last verse of the quote: “…and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.” Has Jesus revealed His Father to you, Friend?

“And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see: For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.” What standing and privilege we have to have come into the knowledge of the Gospel. We have been given greater privilege than many prophets and kings. Have we treasured the privilege above all others?

Jesus is speaking in a public place and gathered around were those who would have enjoyed presenting a question that would have undermined His wisdom and knowledge. I am amazed that they continued so to do for they were constantly made fools by the attempt. There is a “certain lawyer” present who felt able to place Christ on the spot with a question which it was the Lord’s very specialty to answer: “And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Is this a very good question? No, it is not. The premise of the question is wrong for there is nothing that we can DO to inherit eternal life – it is a gift of God. Jesus, being the most able of all teachers, gives the inquirer another question in response to fathom the depths of the inquirer’s knowledge as well as cause for deeper thought on the matter: “What is written in the law? how readest thou?” Should not all of us determine our answers to questions of eternity on God’s Law? Should we not all have read it and meditated thereon? How does the lawyer, very apt at deciphering law, read the question? This is an excellent technique to determine – not the depth of the lawyer’s knowledge, but the want of knowledge.

The lawyer answered very ably for he knew the ‘words’ of the law, but perhaps not the spirit of it: “And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.” The lawyer may recognize the technical qualities of a diamond, but he cannot know the source of its beauty.

Note how respectfully Christ treats the question and answer of the lawyer who seeks to ‘tempt’ him. “And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.” If credit is due, you may always expect it from Christ.

The lawyer realizes that he has failed to reveal any indiscretion in the answer of Christ and seeks to justify his inquiry and standing by pressing further. By asking this next question, he hopes to weaken the credibility of Christ in whatever He claims as a neighbor. “But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?” We can clearly see by the motive and attitude that the lawyer is less in earnest to understand truth, than to place his witness off balance. His interest is not truth, but justification of himself which he is incapable of doing just like every other sinner.

These next beautiful lines of a Parable of Christ are among the most beloved and noteworthy of the Gospels and repeated almost daily in general conversation: “Come on, be a good Samaritan and loan me some money!” or “The life of a victim of an automobile accident this morning was saved by a good Samaritan who just happened on the scene of the accident shortly after it happened.” Do we not hear such accounts daily?

“And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?”

Here we see unsurpassing grace and a full figure of our Lord Himself described. In what way, you ask?  Because we were that man who went DOWN the road of life and were beaten by the devil and his friends. We were left to die until a good Samaritan (Christ) came along – going UP to the Holy City – and treated our hurts and sores with His own riches and Being. He did so after even those who were considered ‘holy’ passed us by. He cared for our wounds, and placed us on His own beast, and took us to a place of security, and continued to treat our hurts, and purchased our continued treatment and security until He returns for us. This is part of the spiritual meaning, but there is also a general application that presents in our own lives and those of other Christians.

This ‘certain man’ that went down (the wrong direction) the road from Jerusalem, the Holy City, to Jericho, a worldly city, was a Jew. He it was who, it was suspected, would have a bag of money hidden on his person for commerce. Being a Jew, he had every right to expect help from his religious leaders of the same race. He would have found the gentile Samaritans (half-blooded Jews) to have been unworthy of his friendship and beneath his class.  He would never have lifted a finger to help the ‘unclean’ Samaritan.

Alas, he falls among thieves who are waiting along the path in ambush. The devil sets many ambushes for us to destroy both our faith and our persons. The thieves took all that the man had, even including his raiment (clothes) and left him half-dead. Do you know that all who know not Christ have been left half-dead along life’s road? Satan would prefer to leave us half-dead than fully dead so that we may cause others to follow our folly. This is true of combat. The enemy would prefer to seriously wound our soldier than to kill him. Why? Because many support personnel are required to treat a wounded warrior, but far less to bury one such soldier.

Note that a priest and a Levite comes along, going DOWN (the wrong direction) as well, to Jericho. It may be presumed that they had just completed Temple duties and were cleansed. But these two had yet to learn the meaning of the Lord’s words: “For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.” (Hosea6:6) Temple worship, or indeed any worship, will not suffice apart from a love of God and our fellow men. The priest clearly sees the man, we are told, but decides not to help the man or to touch blood which would have made him ‘unclean.’ The Levite sees the man and, at least comes to where he is and looks on him. But then goes the way of the priest. Both are guilty of lack of mercy and compassion – ingredients of character that cannot coexist in evil hearts.

Now comes a Samaritan UP the Road to Jerusalem. Unlike the priest, the Jew, and the Levite, this man is traveling in the RIGHT direction. (Psalm 1) Note the actions of the Good Samaritan:

            1)       “came where he was” As Christians, we must GO to where the need is greatest, not relax in opulence in our parlors.

            2)       “he saw him” How many needs go unseen every day though our eyes cannot avoid the observance of that need?

            3)       “he had compassion on him” Just as our Savior, Christ, this Samaritan, though hated by this Jew, felt the man’s hurt so keenly that he took measures to help the man of his hurt (just as Christ has done for those of us who have come to Him).

            4)       “And went to him” His first coming to where the man was at the time , to us by happenstance; but surely to God, our steps were ordered. After coming to a person in need we do not simply stand and watch. We GO to the victim so that we may render assistance.

            5)       “and bound up his wounds” Just as Jesus practiced triage of treating the most critical need first, so does this Samaritan by binding up the man’s wounds to stop the bleeding. Has Christ not found us with our own blood flowing from our souls and given us life? “And when I passed by thee, and saw thee polluted in thine own blood, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live; yea, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live.’ (Ezek 16:6) When we see our neighbor strangers perishing for grave want, have we forgotten the great mercies granted to us?

            6)        “pouring in oil and wine.” The only resources the Samaritan had to treat the man was the expensive oil and wine which he not only ‘applied’ but ‘poured’ into the man’s wounds. He spared no personal treasures in helping his charge. Do you not love this Good Samaritan?

            7)       “set him on his own beast” The Samaritan would rather walk in order that the wounded man might ride. This is ‘mercy’ combined with ‘sacrifice’– the kind of combination that the Lord loves.

            8)       “and brought him to an inn” The Samaritan is not concerned about his tight schedule. He takes time to take the best care of the wounded man. This is an expense as well, but he does not even consider it an expense. It is an obligation before God.

            9)       “and took care of him” I wish I had many friends as kind as this Samaritan Stranger. Actually, I do have ONE, and perhaps others of my friends who love that ONE. He continued, even at the end, to take time and trouble to treat the man.

            10)    “And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him” Apparently being convinced that the man would be well after rest and gentle treatment, the Samaritan departs to care for his pressing business in Jerusalem. But he does not forget the responsibility he has shouldered for the Jew. He PAYs even the innkeeper to continue caring for the Jew. “He doeth all things well!”

                11)    “and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.” Had you ever considered ALL that the Good Samaritan did for this wounded Jew, or for that wounded soul that resides in your own heart? “Even if it costs me more, I will pay. I will pay to the uttermost.” Says the Good Samaritan.

Jesus has told the story which will fully answer the question of the lawyer, but the lawyer remains stiff-necked in his pride. Jesus asks: “Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?” Three men were involved. Two were not only religious leaders from whom one might expect greater degrees of compassion, but also men of the same blood. They, of all people, should have considered a fellow Jew, a neighbor. They passed by without lifting a finger to help the poor wounded fellow. The third, a lowly Samaritan, spent his own wealth, took his own time, and delayed his own business to help a man whose race hated him. Which one of these three would any sane person believe was neighbor to the wounded man? You, or I, would answer the Samaritan; but the lawyer, being a Jew who loathed even the name of a Samaritan, answered only: “He that shewed mercy on him.” The lawyer would prefer a pronoun to a real name. Even so, he answered correctly even if in the wrong spirit.

Jesus responded to the lawyer in the same way He responds to you and me: “Go, and do thou likewise.” What have you been this week: a priest, a Levite, or a Good Samaritan?

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon tied the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and talked, as is oft the case, of the need for action, not simply diction.

Consider the words of the Collect:  “…whose only gift it cometh that thy faithful people do unto thee true and laudable service; Grant, we beseech thee, that we may so faithfully serve thee in this life, that we fail not finally to attain thy heavenly promises…”

In our prayer to God, we acknowledge that His only or greatest gift is that we are, through Him, able to give Him true service.  For, it must be understood the only way we can really be happy is when we align our being with His Being.  Truly align, not get around restrictions.  There is a big difference.  We are not trying to avoid being caught in a rule, but trying to live by the Big Picture and not worry about little things.  How do we do this? Well, we first must trust God in our hearts, souls and minds. Then we love him with all our hearts souls and minds, this creates a solid foundation for serving Him laudably throughout the rest of our days.

In order to serve him, we have to remember to love Him with all our hearts, souls and minds and to “love thy neighbor as thyself.”  This is the first step to following him. Then, you have to act upon your trust in Him. If you trust Him truly, as a spiritual parent, then just like with your earthly parents, you will take His advice into consideration and acting upon int. In the old times, God had to prepare the people for the coming of Christ. So the Law of the Old Testament was an intermediate step to prepare people for Jesus. People had to be trained to follow the basic moral laws, before they could even comprehend the message Jesus gave.

If we do what we should do, we will follow the little rules as a matter of course.  If we get the important things the little things will follow soon after. The only rules that are important really come from:

  1. Love thy God with all thy heart and soul and mind;

  2. Love they neighbor as thyself.

As Jesus says, “On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” He means all of the moral laws and preaching of the prophets past can be traced back to these laws, which comprise the basis for all of the laws that would follow thereafter, especially the Ten Commandments.  The 613 Mosaic Laws can call be traced back to these two commandments. They are the “Basic Speed Laws” of the Christian faith; there is no way to get around these two and be within the spirit or intent of the Law.

Trying to follow the Law failed to solve the problems of the people it was designed to help and thinking about how getting around technicalities is different than doing what is right. To comply with the Law is a different matter than finding loopholes around the Law. The Pharisees did the latter, and we should do the former.

In California, we have this law called The Basic Speed Law. It says you should drive no faster than is safe. If there is a bend of road posted at 40 miles per hour, but it is really safer to go 25 mph, which is complying with the intent of the law ?

The Pharisees would have you find a loophole in a 25 miles per hour zone for example, by just going 25 miles per hour. But, what if the area it is in is not safe for 25 mph, more like 15 miles per hour?  Could you honesty think going 25 miles per hour in what is actually a 15 miles per hour zone is within the intent of the law? No! It is the same with trying to go around the intent of the Law. We cannot honestly say we are doing something within the spirit of the Law, when we are only doing lip service to it. We must be within the intent or spirit of the Law, rather than trying to find ways around the Law.  Follow, not avoid.

In the Epistle, we are reminded God chose Abraham not because of he complied with The Law, for the Law was far into the future.  God chose Abraham because he had faith and put his trust in God.  The Law was an aid to man to help him be better when he had difficulty following God’s Will.

If we do the same and put our trust in God, we will be able to perform the laudable service that He so desires for the rest of our days. We have to keep this continuous process of faith and trust going. The best way to do that is to learn and absorb the Scriptures as a whole, to see the large picture of what He wants for us. The Law is a small part of the large picture, when you see how it ties into the New Testament, you have a larger understanding of what God wants in your lives, as individuals. That is to follow the Great Commission, to spread the Gospel of our Lord, which will improve the lives of those who truly believe upon Him and bring true Happiness throughout the globe.

However, not everyone on the globe will follow Him, and they will not be truly happy as a result. An example of this are the Pharisees.  They were religious lawyers who specialized in the 613 Mosaic Laws, which brought them death, not life.  Their job was to help people not break The Law without unduly interfering with their lives by forcing them to embrace the intent of The Law.

When the Pharisee of the Gospel asked Jesus what he should do to gain eternal life, the Pharisee correctly summarized The Law: Love God; Love your neighbor.  He would have been fine had he stopped there.  But, he had to show the Son how smart he was.  In doing so, the lawyer was about to learn the first lesson of lawyering, ‘Never ask a question to which you don’t know the answer.’  So he asked, ‘Who is my neighbor?’  The answer, of course, is everyone but you; the rest of humanity.  But, as was often the case, Jesus presented the story of the injured man helped by the Samaritan, then asked who was neighbor to the injured man?

The priest and the Levite would not see the injured man; there are none so blind as those who will not see.  They could or would not follow the second commandment of the Summary of the Law, of loving they neighbor as thyself. They were too prideful to see the truth of loving they neighbor. They were too wrapped up in the riches and cares of this world.

The material things of this world are temporary and they have blinded and ensnared many. This is the reason that the Jews have not yet come to Christ and they will not come to Christ. They care too much about the symbolic rituals of their Temple of restoring that. They are very much like many churches of today in that respect, caring about their position on Earth more than their faith in God.  Focusing on this world, which is only a temporary state, is a foolish and fleeting thing. What they should have focuses on was their eternal life. While they knew of the concept of Heaven, they truly did not know it or believe in it per se.

They cared only about following The Law on Earth and hoping that foolish hope would bring them salvation. No matter how they followed it, they could not obtain salvation on their own. The missing link to their solution was one that has been here since The Creation: Jesus Christ. They are searching for Him, but they cannot find Him, as he is right under their noses. This is the problem with the World as well. They search for the answers that He provides, but they will not acknowledge Him or His solutions.

The world would be better off if they learned the lesson the lawyer learned in today’s Gospel. You will also note the Samaritan, one of those separated from the chosen mass of Judaism, did his duty.  When he left the injured man at the inn, having given the innkeeper roughly two days wages, he said, “Do what need be done, if I owe more I will pay when I pass by next.”  You will note, he put no limit on his duty, he just committed to doing what needed to be done, regardless of cost.

The lawyer to his credit answered honestly, “He that shewed mercy on him.”  Jesus told him, “Go, and do thou likewise.”

Right is not a matter of quantum; it is not a matter of majority rules or public opinion; actions speak louder than words.

Action counts.  For by their actions ye shall know them.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Does It Matter if I Worship a Different God[3]?

Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity

August 30, 2015

When I was in the military service, I knew people who were American by birth and heritage, of European descent, brought up in the Church, who claimed to be Buddhists.  Their lives and conduct showed they knew very little about the Buddhist religion, and did not really care to live by its teachings, but their “dog tags” named Buddhist as their religion.  I am old enough to remember the Hare Krishnas in the airports, and I do not remember a single Asian among them.  All were Americans of European descent.  Most were brought up in the Church, or as nominal Christians, but they were Chrinos (Christians in name only).  Hare Krishna was more of a fad to them than a religion.  Nowadays people are calling themselves Druids.  They know nothing about the Druids, they make up their own versions of Druidism, but many “Christians” do the same with their “faith,” so that is not surprising. Recently, an Episcopalian made headlines by becoming a Muslim.  She was an ordained Episcopal minister, and wanted to continue in that capacity, claiming to be both a Christian and a Muslim.  Is this possible?  Can a person be a Christian and a Muslim, Jew, or member of another religion at the same time?  Does it matter if I worship another god or a different god?

Before we go any further, let me explain what I think people mean when they ask this question.  They are asking if a person who worships another god can go to Heaven.

Naturally, many answers to this question have been offered.

One answer comes from people who are openly hostile to Christianity.  These people do not actually ask if it matters if they worship other gods, they emphatically and vehemently state that it does not.  Many of these people blame Christianity for the problems of the world today.  If it were not for Christianity, they believe, we could rid the world of capitalism and give every person an equal portion of the world’s resources.  I don’t see these people giving all they have to the poor and living like Paul, Augustine, or Mother Theresa. I usually only see them voting to raise other people’s taxes, but that’s another issue. These people believe that, if we could rid the world of Christianity, we could end the wars, hate, crime, and  injustice that plague the world, and we could create peace and prosperity in our own time.  These people forget, probably intentionally, that war, crime, oppression, injustice, and hate were part of the human condition long before Christ was born, therefore, they  were not caused by Christianity.  They also forget, or never knew, that the basic teachings of Christianity emphatically condemn hate, crime and injustice, and that their own idea that there ought to be peace, and prosperity, and justice for all people comes right out of the pages of the Old and New Testaments.  They have perverted and distorted the Biblical teachings, but they still got them from the Bible, and from the very religion they hate.  These people are often atheists, agnostics,  or agnostic theists who believe in some kind of deity of good will, but do not believe we can know anything about Him/Her/It/Them, and everything we think we know is mere speculation.

A second kind of person who asks this question iares theists who believe God is bigger than the ideas and practices of any one religion, or even all religions combined.  These people say each religion expresses some accurate understanding of God, but that understanding is only partial.  Therefore, each religion also expresses much about God that is inaccurate and misleading.  But the inaccuracies don’t matter because God doesn’t care about them.  He accepts all religions and all worship as valid and acceptable worship of Him/Her/It/Them.  Each religion, then, seeks the same Cosmic Unity/God, and each leads ultimately to Him/Her/It/Them. All roads lead to the same mountain top, and it doesn’t matter which road you take.  You can call the Supreme Being God, Jesus, Allah, Odin, Ra,  Baal, Krishna, or the Force.  It doesn’t matter because all refer to the same Essence.

A third consists of professing Christians who believe in universal salvation.  Universal salvation means everyone goes to Heaven.  I have spoken to several of these people lately, and believe this view is rapidly increasing today.  It is certainly taught by many of the old “main line” denominations today.  Actually, calling them main line is a misnomer.  They have departed from the main line and are now derailed or sputtering along a side track that will not take them to the destination they seek.  Orthodox Christians, who hold fast the faith once delivered to the saints, are the main line denominations.  By the grace of God, we were kept on the track when the others derailed or diverted to side tracks.

Universalists use language like, “we’re all God’s children, and we’re all going to Heaven.  All He wants is for us to realise that He loves us, and start treating each other with compassion.  The Church’s task, and the task of every religion, is to tell people God loves them, and work for peace and justice.”  They usually mean peace and justice as defined by the liberal socialist agenda.  I once had a professor in a Southern Baptist seminary tell me God doesn’t care who we sleep with, God only cares about peace and justice.  Others have told me God doesn’t care what we believe, and He doesn’t care about the traditional Gospel of salvation by the Cross of Christ, He only cares about peace and justice, and being nice people.  To these people, it doesn’t matter what god you worship.  Just be sincere and try to be a good person, because we’re all going to Heaven anyway.

There is another answer to this question.  It is not very popular today.  In fact, most of the world’s people hate it.  The Bible says it is a stumbling block and an offence to people. It is the answer given in the Bible.  It is given in many places and in many ways.  In the Old Testament, the worship of other gods is called idolatry.  In fact, God often compares it to whoredom and whoremongering (Jer. 3:1, 2).  The very first commandment is, “thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Ex. 20:2).  “Before me” does not mean to place another god ahead of God in our affections and service.  It does not mean we can have other gods after Him, as long as He is first.  It means we are to have no other gods before His face, or, in His presence.  Since God is present everywhere, the clear meaning of this commandment is that we are to have no other gods at all.  “Thou shalt have no god but ME.”

According to the Bible, worshiping another god is not just worshiping God by a different name.  It is attributing the glory and blessings of God to an image, a statue or an idea made to resemble corruptible people or animals (Rom. 1:23).  People who worship these things profess to be wise, but prove themselves fools (Rom. 1:22).

The Bible never hints that idolaters will go to Heaven.  Instead, it clearly states the opposite.  “No man cometh to the Father but by me,” said our Lord Jesus Christ.  Speaking of Jesus, crucified and raised from the dead, the Apostle Peter said, Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).  Of those who worship other gods, the Bible says, “the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death,” (Rev. 21:8).  “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city, for without  are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie,” (Rev. 22:14, 15).

Idolaters, then, are placed in some pretty bad company.  They are counted among murderers and abominations and whoremongers.  Theirs is not a harmless case of mistaken identity.  Theirs is a sin which breaks the first and greatest commandment. God takes that commandment very seriously.  We should, too.  So, does it matter if you worship another god?  Yes. Emphatically, yes.

Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity

Ready and Watching

30 August 2015, Anno Domini

Psalm 73 • Habakkuk 1:12-2:4, 14 • Hebrews 10:35-39

The Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity.

Amen.

Habakkuk 2:1-4, 14

2 I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.

2 And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

Hebrews 10:35-39

35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.

38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

How do we serve the Lord?  In what ways do we prepare ourselves for this service?  If we look for clues in today’s scripture we can see several very pointed ways that we should go. We should be always vigilant, ‘watching’. We should be ever prepared. As we peruse the Bible daily we should be open to the Holy Spirit’s direction as directed by discoveries we see in the Word.

Here are a few ideas and suggestions as to how we should prepare, watch, and be ready as believers.  A daily ‘soaking’ in the Word is the first prescription that needs to be followed.

Let us look at a few concepts from the prophet Habakkuk, each of which involves our focused attention.

Stand watch

Look up, look around, look within and watch to see what he will say unto me. If you listen attentively to his Word as you read it and digest it, as you hear it spoken.

God speaks to us in His Word and he also speaks to us in our own consciences, whispering to us, “this is the way, walk in it.”  Sometimes in order to hear God we must withdraw from the world, we must seek a quiet space, a quiet time, spending time in the Word, continue in prayer.  In a way we must do what the psalmist did; ‘…consider the days of old’ and make ‘a diligent search in the Word’.   Don’t give into your doubts, but struggle to make the best out of them.  So as you pray to God, we must carefully observe what answers God gives by way of his Word, his Spirit, and his providence. (This means the things that happen to us that we have no control over and yet by them happening we have a change in circumstance or direction.)  Sometime this change doesn’t make any sense to us at the time, but in reflection, we see that His hand was in the change for our good or instruction.

The Vision

Let us look at the Anglican commentator, Matthew Henry, as he discusses the last concept in this passage from Habakkuk.

This vision, the accomplishment of which is so long waited for, will be such an exercise of faith and patience as will try and discover men what they are.

  1. There are some who will proudly disdain this vision, whose hearts are so lifted up that they scorn to take notice of it; if God will work for them immediately, they will thank him, but they will not give him credit; their hearts are lifted up towards vanity, and, since God puts them off, they will shift for themselves and not be beholden to him; they think their own hands sufficient for them, and God’s promise is to them an insignificant thing. That man’s soul that is thus lifted up is not upright in him; it is not right with God, is not as it should be. Those that either distrust or despise God’s all-sufficiency will not walk uprightly with him,   Gen. 17:1. But…

  2. Those who are truly good, and whose hearts are upright with God, will value the promise, and venture their all upon it; and, in confidence of the truth of it, will keep close to God and duty in the most difficult trying times, and will then live comfortably in communion with God, dependence on him, and expectation of him. The just shall live by faith; during the captivity good people shall support themselves, and live comfortably, by faith in these precious promises, while the performance of them is deferred. The just shall live by his faith, by that faith which he acts upon the Word of God. This is quoted in the New Testament (Rom. 1:17; Gal. 3:11; Heb. 10:38), for the proof of the great doctrine of justification by faith only and of the influence which the grace of faith has upon the Christian life. Those that are made just by faith shall live, shall be happy here and for ever; while they are here, they live by it; when they come to heaven faith shall be swallowed up in vision.

Twice we read in our scripture for this day once in the writings of the minor prophet Habakkuk we read “…but the just shall live by his faith…”. And then in the book of Hebrews we read “the just shall live by faith”. We also see that doctrine expressed in the letters to the Romans, Galatians and to the Hebrews.  What does this mean?  In a very real sense it reveals that we really can’t do anything to advance our salvation; we must rely on the faith God gives us to believe what He says through the scripture.

Let us pray:

O

GOD, who sparest when we deserve punishment, and in thy wrath rememberest mercy; We humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness to comfort and succour all those who are under reproach and misery in the house of bondage; correct them not in thine anger, neither chasten them in thy sore displeasure. Give them a right understanding of themselves, and of thy threats and promises; that they may neither cast away their confidence in thee, nor place it any where but in thee. Relieve the distressed, protect the innocent, and awaken the guilty: and forasmuch as thou alone bringest light out of darkness, and good out of evil, grant that the pains and punishments which these thy servants endure, through their bodily confinement, may tend to setting free their souls from the chains of sin; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

W

E humbly beseech thee, O Father, mercifully to look upon our infirmities; and, for the glory of thy Name, turn from us all those evils that we most justly have deserved; and grant, that in all our troubles we may put our whole trust and confidence in thy mercy, and evermore serve thee in holiness and pureness of living, to thy honour and glory; through our only Mediator and Advocate, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity

The Epistle

Galatians 3:16-22

T

o Abraham and his seed were the promises made.

In the Epistle, Paul tells us the law was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. That mediator is our Lord Jesus Christ who came to serve as our link to God the Father. And on account of our acceptance of his atoning sacrifice, our names have been inscribed within his Book of Life. The Bible teaches us that our Lord came to serve as our mediator — our intercessor— standing at our side much as an earthly attorney stands by his client before the bar of earthly justice. While our Lord is our advocate, he also serves us in ways different from an earthly attorney. He will respond to every charge which our adversary will level at us with, “This one is covered with my blood”. For the moment we accepted his gift of grace, we then received an immediate and binding pardon that renders every accusation against us void because he cancelled them at the cross.

Now, one might say, “You mean all I have to do is say that I am a Christian and my sins will be taken away?” Well, not exactly. Believing on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and accepting his free gift of grace is not the same as simply stating that one is a Christian. Let us consider a few points of difference. First of all, it must be understood that while the Bible does indeed speak of our acceptance of the atoning work of our Lord on the cross, it also requires us to turn unto God and repent in the name of Christ if we will be saved. Salvation is open to all who truly do in fact repent of their sins and trespasses. But there’s more.

After we have accepted Christ, God expects us engage in behaviors which reveal our faith in Christ to others. If one is a newly regenerated person, such a one ought to be baptized (if such has not already been done for them). That is why we refer to baptism as a sacrament— an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace. It was called for in the Great Commission and, as regenerate people, we are expected to be obedient to God’s word written. The Bible sets forth our Lord’s expectations for us. And on that score, we ought seek daily fellowship with him through prayer and Bible reading. For only by following the Bible’s prescription for salvation will we come know our Lord as our “only Mediator and Advocate”. While believing on Christ is essential beforehand, afterwards we are then expected to bear fruit in his service.

Disturbingly, many churches today are peddling what is termed as an “easy believism” as they are encouraging people to simply say they believe in Jesus Christ without teaching them the fundamentals of what it means to truly accept him as Saviour and Lord. Without a solid grounding in God’s word written, what sort of beliefs will they entertain about him? Do they believe that he was just a “good” man? Do they believe that he was simply a gifted public speaker, or a sage offering philosophical advice? The unregenerate of our Lord’s day accepted him as a good teacher and a healer. Sadly, not much has changed in the minds of the unregenerated[4] masses since then. Those who do not possess a true understanding of our Lord stand a good chance of being lured away into those cults of Christ rather than becoming members of the body of Christ. Without scriptural knowledge, they will likely be, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive (Ephesians 4:14).

The unregenerated cannot know our Lord as their “Mediator and Advocate” as they have not recognized his true nature, and this puts them outside of God’s love and blessings. They may have been baptized, or even made a public profession of faith by saying a “sinner’s prayer”. Yes, and in spite of this, their hearts have no place for God, and they have no respect for his word written. They live as if Christ had never lived, and they will die without his grace to lift them heavenward because they did not truly accept him into their hearts, but merely uttered with their lips his holy name.

I have often wondered why so many who have been exposed to the gospel reject it. The gospel of Christ provides true peace for troubling times. It contains that greater love which no mortal can express or imagine. It speaks of God’s forgiveness for our previous faults and failings as well as their expungement when we confess them in Christ’s name. Through our faith we are thus redeemed from death, hell and the grave. The gospel of our Lord comforts us with the blessed assurance of God’s everlasting promise to end all our pain and suffering. And as we believe on him as the Christ, we believe also that he has gone into heaven to prepare a place for us, and that in due time he will come again to bring us home. We believe that as saved persons, he will empower our spiritual gifts so that we might expand the number of the elect through our witness.

There is so much good that God through Christ will do, and has done, and yet many persist in discounting the gospel message either at its initial presentation, or after having briefly experienced its effects. They tend to keep God at arms length because of their lack of faith, and are thus lured away by temptations of the world, the flesh and the devil.

Thankfully, we who have been born again possess God’s gift of grace. Every time we recite the words of either the Apostles’ Creed or the Nicene Creed, we are affirming our belief that Jesus Christ is our Saviour and Lord— that he is our only Mediator and Advocate with God the Father. Through the words of the creeds, we affirm our acceptance of God’s free gift of redemption, and that through our confession to the Father in the name of Christ, we are forgiven of our sins and trespasses. And as we have been so cleansed, we are then enabled to approach God’s throne of grace where we may lay our cares and concerns; our praises and thanksgivings; our petitions, and our pleading— doing so in the knowledge that we will be heard by our good and loving God.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, if you are in good standing with God; if you have done as he has commanded and truly confessed your sins; then I urge you to come to God’s table and partake of his sacrament. Honor him as your Saviour, Redeemer and Friend, your great high priest, and the author and finisher of your faith. If you will do so, you will find him standing with you against all that the world, the flesh and the devil will send your way. For through faith in his shed blood, you will find redemption and comfort for your souls.

So then, I urge each of you to come and receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord. Seek his will for you. Read and inwardly digest his word and commandment. Do not reject his teachings because you do not fully understand them. Do not reduce God’s word written to human terms, and thus allegorize away the miraculous and the prophetic. God’s word is true. It is inspired and inerrant. It contains much which can help you in this life, and it will also prepare you for the life to come. It clearly sets forth for all to see that a loving God stepped into his creation to redeem that which was lost. Make it your prayer today that God will touch your heart, and that you would embrace his only begotten Son as your only Mediator and Advocate.

Let us pray,

H

eavenly Father, help us daily to become more effective witnesses in thy love and service so that others might come to know Jesus Christ as their only Mediator and Advocate; for this we ask in his most holy name. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Pakistan

We are reminded that one of the founding principles of the Anglican Church is its national churches.  While not a theological principle, it is nonetheless one of the critical elements of our way;  we join Bishop Jacob in celebrating the independence of Pakistan:

Dear Bishop Ogles & AOC family,

Greetings from Pakistan. On 14th August we are celebrating Independence Day.  The Government of Pakistan officially celebrate August 11 as Minority Day. This year on 11th August the President of Pakistan arranged a very nice function to mark Minority Day in President’s House. It was my honor that the President of Pakistan extended an invitation to attend this function. It was first time I as Bishop of Anglican Orthodox Church of Pakistan attended the function. There were two hundred guests from all over Pakistan who attended this function. Later a very good dinner was served. Thanks God that the Lord provided this chance to witness and represent AOC in very high level. May the name of our Lord be glorified.

In Christ’s alone,

+Ernest Jacob

Bishop of AOC Pakistan

The forces of evil are strong in Pakistan.  The force of God stronger.  Pray for our Christian family there.

Pakistan is affected by heavy rains and flood.  Some of our members who live near canals or creeks also affected. Last Saturday flood water came into the St. Paul Anglican Orthodox Church building located at Jamrud in Khyber Agency called tribal area. Jamrud is 15 miles away from my home town Peshawar. The church building was filled with water and damaged the carpet. We do not have benches in this church and people sit on the floor during church service.  Last year we replaced old carpet with new one and this year flood damaged the new carpet again. Due to this incident the Sunday Service could not be held.  Please pray for our priest Rev. Razzaq and members who are working hard to clean up the church building and let it dry so that they can have service on Sunday. Some houses located near this building also damaged due to rains.  Please pray for these dear members who are facing this hardship.

In Christ’s alone,

Bishop Ernest Jacob

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·       One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·       All religions are not equal
  • ·       All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·       The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·       All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·       Good;
  • ·       Bad;
  • ·       Evil;
  • ·       Right;
  • ·       Wrong;
  • ·       Allah is the Devil;
  • ·       Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

The Islamist group (ISIS) just took over Quaragosh, the biggest Christian city in Iraq; 164 men, women and children were beheaded.  People ask where is God?  The real question is where are the people to enforce God’s will.  Pray the people of the world will see Allah for who he is, the Devil.  Pray for those who remain behind that they might find a way to safety.

[1] Samaritan – Of or pertaining to Samaria, in Palestine. — n. A native or inhabitant of Samaria; also, the language of Samaria. [1913 Webster]

Samaritans were descendants of those who had stayed behind during the Captivity and had been separated for many years from the body of Judaism.  They had not developed, nor did they subscribe to them, all the rules the Jews managed to invent during their separation.  The main body of Jews viewed them as lesser peoples, not really Jews.

[2]Good Samaritan n : a person who voluntarily offers help or sympathy in times of trouble [syn: {Samaritan}]

[3] Executive Summary – YES, it matters.

[4]The Trilemma of Jack Lewis in Mere Christianity – I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.
