West Coast Anglican Orthodox Church News

I am pleased and gratified to include below an announcement of the Vestry of St. George’s Anglican Church in Ventura, California to become an episcopal branch of the Anglican Orthodox Church renewing a relationship that been close and cordial throughout the life of St. George. This declaration of the unanimous decision of the Vestry provides a legal implementing directive for that affiliation; however, St. George will remain an autonomous diocese under the oversight of Bishop Dave Pressey. All matters regarding the decision of visiting clergy, policy of Prayer Book Worship, or daily operation of the ministry at St. George will remain under the purview of Bishop Pressey.

Announcement

Bishop David Pressey has been accepted as Bishop-at-Large in the Anglican Orthodox Church under the episcopal authority of Presiding Bishop Jerry Ogles. This is a return to the original Low Church roots of St. George’s Anglican Church in Ventura, California.

All clergy and subsequent clergy at St. George’s, as well as other affiliate churches, have derived their ordinations through the AOC beginning with Bishop Bob Godfrey. Our theology, polity, and understanding of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer were developed through the Cranmer Seminary where Bishops Dave Pressey and Reg Hammond studied with subsequent ordination and consecration.

Dr. Henry and Bishop Hammond developed the Constitution, Canons, and By-laws for St. George’s based on the original documents of the Episcopal Church in America. These governing documents continue in force at St. George’s Anglican Church in Ventura.

Bishop Jerry Ogles is a learned theologian with extensive background in history, theology, engineering, military science, and governance. However, his initial background was as a West Point Army officer who fought in Vietnam. His brother was killed in that war. Later Bishop Jerry Ogles married and raised three children. He adopted and raised four more children.

St. George’s continues a relationship with the AOC and Bishop Jerry Ogles. By Vestry decision, Bishop Jerry Ogles will assume episcopal functions for St. George’s in the event of the disability or demise of Bishop Dave Pressey. This is stated in church records.

Currently, Bishop Pressey is a member of St. George’s Anglican Church in Ventura and will continue in a pastoral and shared preaching role except when required for sacerdotal functions. This was the unanimous request of the current Vestry.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has a few great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Who to please

If you please God, it doesn’t matter whom you displease. And if you displease Him, it doesn’t matter whom you please.

Steve Lawson

Organized Religion

I remember once when I had been giving a talk to the R.A.F., an old, hard-bitten officer got up and said, ‘I’ve no use for all that stuff. But, mind you, I’m a religious man too. I know there’s a God. I’ve felt Him: out alone in the desert at night: the tremendous mystery. And that’s just why I don’t believe all your neat little dogmas and formulas about Him. To anyone who’s met the real thing they all seem so petty and pedantic and unreal!’

Now in a sense I quite agreed with that man. I think he had probably had a real experience of God in the desert. And when he turned from that experience to the Christian creeds, I think he really was turning from something real to something less real. In the same way, if a man has once looked at the Atlantic from the beach, and then goes and looks at a map of the Atlantic, he also will be turning from something real to something less real: turning from real waves to a bit of coloured paper. But here comes the point. The map is admittedly only coloured paper, but there are two things you have to remember about it. In the first place, it is based on what hundreds and thousands of people have found out by sailing the real Atlantic. In that way it has behind it masses of experience just as real as the one you could have from the beach; only, while yours would be a single glimpse, the map fits all those different experiences together. In the second place, if you want to go anywhere, the map is absolutely necessary. As long as you are content with walks on the beach, your own glimpses are far more fun than looking at a map. But the map is going to be more use than walks on the beach if you want to get to America.

Time

Everyone who believes in God at all believes that He knows what you and I are going to do tomorrow. But if He knows I am going to do so-and-so, how can I be free to do otherwise? Well, here once again, the difficulty comes from thinking that God is progressing along the Timeline like us: the only difference being that He can see ahead and we cannot. Well, if that were true, if God foresaw our acts, it would be very hard to understand how we could be free not to do them. But suppose God is outside and above the Time-line. In that case, what we call ‘tomorrow’ is visible to Him in just the same way as what we call ‘today’. All the days are ‘Now’ for Him. He does not remember you doing things yesterday; He simply sees you doing them, because, though you have lost yesterday, He has not. He does not ‘foresee’ you doing things tomorrow; He simply sees you doing them: because, though tomorrow is not yet there for you, it is for Him. You never supposed that your actions at this moment were any less free because God knows what you are doing. Well, He knows your tomorrow’s actions in just the same way—because He is already in tomorrow and can simply watch you. In a sense, He does not know your action till you have done it: but then the moment at which you have done it is already ‘Now’ for Him.

The Rule

[W]here there is no law, there is no liberty; and nothing deserves the name of law but that which is certain and universal in its operation upon all the members of the community.

Why governments inevitably fall into redistribution

Man can live and satisfy his wants only by ceaseless labor; by the ceaseless application of his faculties to natural resources. This process is the origin of property. But it is also true that a man may live and satisfy his wants by seizing and consuming the products of the labor of others. This process is the origin of plunder.

Now since man is naturally inclined to avoid pain — and since labor is pain in itself — it follows that men will resort to plunder whenever plunder is easier than work. … When they can, they wish to live and prosper at the expense of others. This is no rash accusation. Nor does it come from a gloomy and uncharitable spirit. The annals of history bear witness to the truth of it.

There are too many ‘great’ men in the world — legislators, organizers, do-gooders, leaders of the people, fathers of nations, and so on, and so on. Too many persons place themselves above mankind; they make a career of organizing it, patronizing it, and ruling it.

The mere belief of the facts and doctrines of Christianity will never save our souls. Such belief is no better than the belief of devils. They all believe and know that Jesus is the Christ. They believe that he will one day judge the world and cast them down into endless torment. It is a solemn and sorrowful thought that on these points some professing Christians have even less faith than the devil. There are some who doubt the reality of hell and the eternity of punishment. Such doubts as these find no place except in the hearts of self-willed men and women. There is no infidelity among devils.

The Republicans do not know the uses of victory.

L. Bryan Dabney, Sr.

20th century lawyer and bibliophile

The sentiment of “Republicans do not know the uses of victory” assumes that they are incompetents stumbling from one election to the next. Such a position likely came about as a result of partisanship in previous times. But in our current sphere, I would think that a more appropriate expression might be that, “Republicans know all too well those uses of defeat where they will benefit as opposed to the uses of victory where they will not.” The reality is that both political parties at the top will act on issues which will enhance their wealth both corporately and individually. The few principles they possess are negligible apart from their quest for more money and power. Whatever they might do on behalf of their constituents is designed solely for their benefit and gratification. Still, their lust for control over the people pales in comparison to that of their owners— operating behind the curtail, a la the Wizard of Oz— who have supplied them with gratuities of every kind in exchange for their votes and influence. They are as spiders trapped in their owners’ webs. They are deceivers who are themselves deceived. They are predators who are themselves prey. They are liars who have succumbed to lies. So beware the robber, the thief, and the murderer who hides behind the mask of authority and bids you cooperate for your own good whilst he feeds off of your fear, and profits from your folly when you vote for him at the next election.

There are no longer two political parties, but one – the Government Party.  When you see a D or an R after the candidate or elected person’s name, you see a mirage, it is really a G.  The people in office offer their allegiance to the Govenment.

The problem is that the government is now live.  It is an organism of its own.  The three branches of government now hold their allegiance to it and not the Constitution.  This country was carefully designed as a Constitutional Republic with suffrage limited to those who produced.  It was not a democracy, which is the worst form of government.  It is the worst because as soon as the government finds it can buy votes from those who do not produce with money taken from those who produce it becomes mob rule.  Mobs are not ruled “democratically”, rather by their leaders who stand well clear of the firing line.

In many places today, it matters not how you vote, the system will tally the votes the way it wishes.  And, if you send someone to office who campaigned as a conservative, they will vote with the Government Party when they get in to office.

On the Present

The war is not meant to be won, it is meant to be continuous. Hierarchical society is only possible on the basis of poverty and ignorance. This new version is the past and no different past can ever have existed. In principle the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. The war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects and its object is not the victory over either Eurasia or East Asia, but to keep the very structure of society intact.

George Orwell

            All wars, even when carried on by the strongest of nations against weak opponents, are chancy, and their costs, in every respect, are always much more than anticipated, even putting aside the physical destruction and the lives lost.

Nations that have started wars with the psychological certainty of winning rarely have, and when they have, the results were rarely lasting… People need to realize that after a war, things are never the same as they were before, and that even the winners rarely get what they fight for. War is a fool’s errand in pursuit of ephemera… Americans are foolishly assuming that the peoples of the Middle East will change their attitudes if enough force is imposed for a long enough time and enough promises of a better future are made. History belies this assumption. Unfortunately, history teaches its lessons to only those willing to learn…

Rules of War

  1. Step One, acknowledge you are at war.

  2. Step Two, identify the enemy.

  3. Step Three, realistically identify his strong points and weak points and what he values. Identify what victory means.

  4. Step Four, bring your strong points to bear against his weak points.

  5. Step Five, when his weak points are gone, his formerly strong points will be weak. Bring your strong points against them. At that point, if by chance he has two of anything left destroy them. Fight with 100 percent of the violence available.

The problem is we have yet to get to Step One. All we are doing is spending American lives and money we don’t have.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 118-120, with the Collect first:

The Sunday called Septuagesima, or the

third Sunday before Lent.

The Collect.

O

 LORD, we beseech thee favourably to hear the prayers of thy people; that we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Epistle for today came from the Ninth Chapter of the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians beginning at the  Twenty-Fourth Verse.  Paul tells us that we must strive for mastery over ourselves so that we can gain the crown of eternal life offered us at great cost by our Lord Jesus Christ.  We must each do our own personal best to control our own actions and behavior so we can follow God’s Plan for each of us.  We must be bold and certain in our actions.

K

NOW ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize?  So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: but I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection; lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

The Holy Gospel for today came from the Twentieth Chapter of the Gospel of Saint Matthewbeginning at the First Verse.  Often quoted, this is the very important parable of the vineyard.  While it appears to be principally directed towards Christians wanting to be “first” in importance and the like, it has a more direct meaning.  It is a fine lesson in “buyer’s remorse” or coveting of jobs or similar concepts.  If you got a good deal, it does not change because someone else got a “better” deal.  Take what you got, go forth and be happy.  Other meanings abound.  For a very direct application, what this means is “cradle” Christians are no more likely to go to heaven than this morning’s convert.  They just get to enjoy the Christian experience longer.  One note, if you wait until the last minute to join the gang, your time here might end before you get around to it.

Sometimes people act like being a Christian is an unpleasant experience that they will do when they get a round tuit.  It is not.  Christians aren’t perfect, they just have more fun being imperfect and imperfectly trying to improve!  Anyway, here is the Gospel according to Saint Matthew:

T

HE kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

Sermon Notes

Septuagesima

24 January 2016, Anno Domini (in the Year of Our Lord)

For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. 2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? 7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. 8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. 9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. 10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. 11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, 12  Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. 13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? 14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. 15  Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? 16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen. (Matthew 20)

            Christ, being both the beginning and the end, has sole right to decide the reward of those who follow Him.

            This parable has direct relevance to the preceding event in Matthew 19 – 16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? 21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

            The Apostles did not understand this treatment of the rich young man. Jesus carefully explained that they would inherit eternal life, but He also closed the previous chapter with the words: 19:30  But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

            There are a number of parallels to be drawn from other contextual references of the Bible to this principle of first/last, last/first.

            Luke 15 – Parable of the prodigal son.

And he said, A certain man had two sons: 12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

            The younger son (representing the gentiles)took his belongings and left the father and older brother and went into a far country where, after a time of carousing and living in finery, he lost all and was feeding the pigs.

After a time, he came to his senses and resolved to return to his father as a hired servant, but the father only lavished the boy with gifts and love and called him his son.

            The older was of a sad and fallen countenance.

25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. 28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him. 29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: 30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. 31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. 32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

            These, and many others we will not relate at this moment, serve to remind us that the Kingdom of Heaven is not organized along the lines of labor unions, or Corporate Human Relations policies.

            It tells us, first of all, that the gift of eternal life is not dependent on years of service or some principle of seniority.

            Once accepted by Christ, we are accepted wholly and in full.

            My wife used to remind me some churches and Christians are like the chickens in the chicken coop – the moment a baby chicken finds an insect and tries to eat it, one of the older chickens rushes over and pecks the young chicken on the head so that he is unable to eat.

            Some one new comes into the church with some excellent talent the Lord has given them, and oftentimes, the older members do all in their power to prevent that new person from sharing that talent the Lord has given.

            That is a part of the meaning of the parable we study today of the Husbandman and the laborers.

            The Husbandman is Christ – the laborers are those called to follow Christ.

            Listen to the the explanation given by Bishop R.C. Trench, in his Notes on the Parables and Dean of Westminster Cathedral:

“But for all this the question, “What shall we have?” was not a right one; it put their relation to their Lord on a wrong footing. There was a tendency in it to bring their obedience to a calculation of—so much work, so much reward. There lurked, too, a certain self-complacency in it. In this parable the Apostles are taught that, however long-continued their work, abundant their labours, yet without charity to their brethren, and humility before God, they are nothing; that pride and a self-complacent estimate of their work, like the fly in the precious ointment, would spoil the work, however great it might be, since that work stands only in humility, and from first they would fall to last. The lesson taught to Peter, and through him to us all, is that the first may be altogether last; that those who stand foremost as chief in labour, yet if they forget that the reward is of grace and not of works, and begin to boast and exalt themselves above their fellow-labourers, may altogether lose the things which they have wrought; while those who seem last may yet, by keeping their humility, be acknowledged first and foremost in the day of God.”

            Another point of this parable is related to the first we have made above.

            The Hebrew people of Israel had been blessed with the favor of God in being an example and forerunner of the people of God.  They had come to believe that God dealt only with them in goodness and blessing and no one else.

            They considered that, if God were to welcome the gentiles into His plan of Salvation, that they must be less blessed than the Jews.

For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. 2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

            Therefore, the Jews are represented by the workers who were hired at the early hour of the morning.

            The husbandman had offered them one penny (or denarius) a day for their labor. This was the customary daily wage for a laborer at the time of Christ.

            Other laborers were hired at the noon day hour, and finally others during the last hour of the harvest.

And he went out about the third hour (9:00 AM), and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. 5 Again he went out about the sixth (12 noon) and ninth hour(3:00 PM), and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour (5 PM) he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? 7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.

            The Jews believed they should receive preference above others who were called latter into the Kingdom, but that is not the way the Lord Jesus works.

            When He healed the diseased, restored sight to the blind, healed leprosy, restored life to the dead …..He always healed COMPLETELY. Those who were healed were healed completely! He also treated the most serious disease first – SIN!

            Example: Matthew 9: 2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. 3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. 4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.7 And he arose, and departed to his house.

            Christ is generous to the Gentile and Jew alike. No one can claim preference in the eyes of God due to the time of their salvation OR THE RACIAL BLOOD IN THEIR VEINS.

            Our reward shall be the Words uttered on that day when we come face-to-face with Christ our Lord: Matt 25:34 33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:   AMEN

Sermon – Rev Jack Arnold

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

Consider these words from the Collect:

… we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness …

In the Collect, we ask God who knows we should be “…justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour …”  To get into heaven we need to be accounted as perfect.  Yet, we cannot be “cured” of sin nor “improved” to perfection. So how do we solve this irregularity? We are imperfect creatures with free will, the most confounding combination ever created for salvation.  We know we ourselves cannot solve our dilemma, Who can?  There is a solution for us!  Consider the words of John Newton near the end of his life, “Although my memory’s fading, I remember two things very clearly: I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior!” The answer lies in the latter part of Newton’s quote. Our sins are justly punished by eternal damnation, yet there is hope in our Lord.  For eternal salvation is the delivery promised to each of us by Jesus.  This is the reward of the race we run here on earth.  Our race is for that eternal prize, not just, as they say, filthy lucre.  It is the complete opposite of filthy lucre and an extremely pure one. It is for the promise of an eternal, unending life, to be spent with our Lord and Savior Jesus. It is for the promise of a world unaffected by the tarnish of sin, unblackened by the sinful deeds of imperfect beings. It is an unshadowed world.  It shall be true happiness at last, to meet with our beloved family, our Christian heavenly family, friends and beloved pets.

Eternal salvation is a far more valuable prize than anything we could possibly acquire here on Earth.  It is in fact a priceless treasure, truly priceless, except for the death of our Saviour and resurrection. That is the only price involved with our eternal freedom. We have to keep this foremost in our thoughts as we continue to run the race set before us!  Keep the eyes on the prize, as it were!  As my grandfather was fond of saying, “Keep your eye on the doughnut, not the hole.”  That means keeping the important things in sight at all times, excluding the unimportant.

Particularly when things get hard, we must keep our end goal fixed firmly in our mind’s eye in order to stay on the path. In order to stay focused on the path, we must always remember that the end, the arrival in Heaven will outweigh all of the sacrifices, blood, sweat and tears we shed in this life. Paul assures us our efforts will give us a reward greater than even our pitiful minds can imagine, if we but stay the course.

Our eyes should be focused on the finish line, not our “competition.”  The only thing which counts is that we each cross the finish line.

So how do we run the race?

With our eyes focused tightly on the finish line, not on those around us, wondering are they doing better than we are?  That is not a useful question.  The useful question is, “Am I doing the best I can?” And, remember this is a Team Effort. We have to want to win, and in order to win the race set before us; we have to perform actions. We need to act upon the Word of Scripture, the message, which is to promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ and preach it to all nations, as in the Great Commandment. But we must first start with our neighbors and work our way outward. It must be a team effort, we cannot all do it alone. We need support along the way, especially when things get tough, we need our Christian buddies to give us moral support and encouragement from the Word.   We want the Christian Team to win.  If an outsider joins, they join the team fully from then on.  We need to give each team member all the help we can.  A deathbed[1] conversion gains the same prize in the end as a life long Christian.  The life long Christian will have had the more rewarding life here on earth, but eternity is a long time after that. So, with that in mind, we must DO our best and not just say it, and we do that by acting upon the Word and not just reading it, but acting.

We are all so far from perfect that Holier than Thou is pretty damning praise.  Don’t even go there.  The best you can really do is not to be as evil as another, even that is pretty doubtful. But, we can do our best for our Lord and that is what really matters.

The Gospel for today, the very important parable of the vineyard, also gives us very good advice on the conduct of our daily lives and contains a crucial key to happiness.  There is the lesson that the deathbed conversion gains the same prize of eternal life as the lifelong follower, but there is a lot more in it for every day life.

It is a fine lesson in “buyer’s remorse” or coveting of jobs or similar concepts.  If you got a good deal, it does not change because someone else got a “better” deal.  Take what you got, go forth and be happy.  Don’t complain because somebody else got the same deal as you did sooner. Other meanings abound.  For a very direct application, what this means is “cradle” Christians are no more likely to go to heaven than this morning’s convert.  They just get to enjoy the Christian experience longer.  So let us not begrudge those who are newly converted, but let us rejoice that they have been saved! As Christ said, we should rejoice that one sinner has repented of his ways!  One note, if you wait until the last minute to join the gang, your time here might end before you get around to it.   So don’t wait until tomorrow to act, do it today while you still have time!

Sometimes people act like being a Christian is an unpleasant experience that they will do when they get a round TUIT.  It is not.  Christians aren’t perfect, they just have more fun being imperfect and imperfectly trying to improve!

Christ gave us eternal life.  But, we have to accept it.  Once you accept it, start living as if you will live forever.  You will and you will have to live with your actions for ever! So Act early and Act often!

There is but one way to heaven.

That easy to find, easy to follow, easy to hike path does not lead to the summit where eternal life in the real world awaits.  Open your heart to the Holy Ghost, use His Power to follow our Lord to God who awaits in heaven.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Septuagesima

24 January 2016

Psalm 20 • Joshua 1:1-9 • 2 Timothy 2:1-13

The Sunday called Septuagesima, or the

third Sunday before Lent.

The Collect.

O

 LORD, we beseech thee favourably to hear the prayers of thy people; that we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

Psalm 20

T

he LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;

Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;

3 Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah.

4 Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel.

5 We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the LORD fulfil all thy petitions.

6 Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand.

7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

8 They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.

9 Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.

This Sunday begins the count down to Easter. We are 70 days, not counting Sundays, from Easter Sunday. As we prepare to start the season of Lent we see several themes carried in today’s scripture.

  • Salvation.

  • Faithfulness

  • Courage.

In the psalter we read of the Lord God of Jacob sending his help and strength to defend his own.

We should only trust in the Lord, not the strength of men. Chariots and horses will fail, but only the Lord will save.

Really a simple message, after all, but maybe a challenge to believe.

Let us examine this message in detail.

First Salvation: ‘…we will rejoice in thy salvation…’  Knowing that the Lord saves will cause one to rejoice, to see the joy of tomorrow, because the Lord is strong to save us.  ‘…the LORD fulfill all thy petitions…’ .  He will care for and give what we need in accordance to his will.

‘…now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him {his anointed} from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand…’   That is all we need to understand. He who has anointed us, in other words, called us to him, those will he save.  Knowing that the strength of the LORD will maintain us, it is his right hand that keeps us from spiritual danger.

Why is this so amazing?  We who justly deserve punishment for our wickedness and sin, have been raised up by the mighty hand of the LORD.  That is what is so amazing, that God would reach down and help us, sustain us, keep us. He will deliver us from our sins.  This is our Salvation.

Second Be strong and of good courage: Now let us turn to the lesson we read in the book of Joshua.

Here we read that God has charged Joshua with the important job of leading God’s people to victory over their foes, finally settling them in the land promised to Father Abraham.

When the Lord spoke to Joshua he gave him not only marching orders but also a plan of the future of the homeland of the Hebrew people.  What did this require Joshua to do?  He had to be strong and of good courage.  Strong and of good courage ?  Yes, it was going to be a long arduous task ahead for Joshua, but he was going to have the God on his side. Joshua was to not turn left or turn right, no he was to follow the straight path according to all (of) the law.

As we remember what our Lord and Savior did when he was tasked with the mission his Father gave him, to seek and save that which was lost; maybe now we can understand why it is important to observe the Lenten Season. As a foreshadowing of the Christ, Joshua’s behavior gives us a pattern of behavior and example that helps us to see how important it is to follow the example of Christ our Savior.

Jesus himself said that he did not come to replace the law, but to fulfill it.  We see this in all aspects of Christ ministry while he was here on earth.  What a Savior!

As we will soon begin the Lenten Season, let us pray the Lord will help us to be ever mindful of the great gift he sent us, his Son our Savior, who would die for our sins, he would rise again and become the First Fruits, showing us the true way to the Father.  Keep that prayer in your heart.   Now our final thought for this Sunday, some seventy days from the Glorious Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, that first Easter; let us see why we can rely on God, not man.

Third Relying on God, not man, for our ultimate defense and salvation. (See above)

  In this passage from the record of Joshua’s life and work we can find that he relied on the Lord for all that he did.  When we follow the example of Joshua we see that it will bring peace. We will be without fear, because the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.  In other words we should rely on the Lord God for everything. We should not rely on man. As David wrote in the 20th Psalm, ‘don’t rely on strong horses, or chariots, but remember the Name of the Lord thy God.’   We can save ourselves a lot of heartache if we stop trying to find another way out. We should look to the Lord.   In this time of meditation and reflecting upon what God has done for us, in spite of our sinful nature, look to the example of Joshua.  See what the Lord promised him.  “…have not I commanded thee?  Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed {depressed or sad}: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest…”   He will be with us to the end of our earthly lives.   After all did he not save us because we are his anointed ?    What promise, what good news.

Beloved, go this week into the tumultuous world, go into the chaos we know as life; knowing that the Lord is with you and will keep you from all spiritual harm, you only need to believe it.

Let us pray:

O

 LORD, deal not with us according to our sins.  Neither reward us according to our iniquities.

O

 GOD, merciful Father, who despisest not the sighing of a contrite heart, nor the desire of such as are sorrowful; Mercifully assist our prayers which we make before thee in all our troubles and adversities, whensoever they oppress us; and graciously hear us, that those evils which the craft and subtilty of the devil or man worketh against us, may, by thy good providence, be brought to nought; that we thy servants, being hurt by no persecutions, may evermore give thanks unto thee in thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

W

E humbly beseech thee, O Father, mercifully to look upon our infirmities; and, for the glory of thy Name, turn from us all those evils that we most justly have deserved; and grant, that in all our troubles we may put our whole trust and confidence in thy mercy, and evermore serve thee in holiness and pureness of living, to thy honour and glory; through our only Mediator and Advocate, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

B

eloved, go in Peace; may the Lord bless and keep you this week in all that you do in say, this we ask in the Name of the Father, the Name of the Son, and the Name of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.  Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Septuagesima

The hymn Crown Him with Many Crowns (Hymn #352, 1940 Hymnal) calls on all regenerated souls to crown the Lord Jesus Christ with many crowns precisely because he is King of all. He is our Lord and Master whose kingdom is eternal and one in which we will abide with him forever safe from the ravages of the wicked spirits dominated by Satan.  We, therefore, have a place in a kingdom that cannot be shaken or moved. Reason enough to crown our Lord with many crowns. But did you know that believers will also receive one or more crowns from our Lord? The scriptures speak of five different crowns which will be given to those whom the Lord shall deem worthy to receive them; they are the:

  1. Incorruptible Crown

  2. Crown of Life

  3. Crown of Glory

  4. Crown of Righteousness

  5. Crown of Rejoicing

Incorruptible Crown

This was spoken of by the apostle Paul in our epistle lesson for today wherein he wrote: Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize?… Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible (I Corinthians 9:24-27). The corruptible crown which the secular runner received as an award was a wreath of made of laurel leaves. The apostle referred to it as corruptible because it was made from materials which were not meant to last. It was literally a crown for that moment because following the next race another one would be given, and another in the race after that, and so on. The apostle reminded Christians that upon the completion our race in this mortal life, we will receive a crown from our Lord which will never fade or fail if we run and faint not. To qualify, we must be faithful in his service. We must exercise due diligence in our works on his behalf. And once we have received the incorruptible crown, it will be ours for all eternity. It will be our badge of honor, which like all the others, we will gladly cast them at the feet of our Lord and Saviour.

Crown of Life

This will be given to those believers who have been faithful to our Lord unto death. As St. John noted in the Book of Revelation, Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life (2:10). As Matthew Henry noted, “The life so worn out in his service, or laid down in his cause, shall be rewarded with another and a much better life that shall be eternal.” When one reads the accounts of the early church fathers who served God unto death, we find the names of men such as the apostles Paul, Peter, James, Andrew and Thomas. In fact most of the disciples as well as a host of early Christians were martyred for the faith as well as the Reformation saints who perished rather than reject the truth of God’s word written. Inclusive within that number are our Anglican fathers, such as Cranmer, Ridley, Hooper and Latimer, who chose the stake over their acceptance of the doctrine of the “real presence” in the Communion. No doubt the names of those whose lives were used up in service to our Lord in the mission fields will receive such a crown as they spread the good news to the remote regions of the world where the light of Christ had yet to pierce and who labored even in the face of death to preach the word of God to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. What graciousness they shall receive at the hand of our Lord we can only imagine.

Crown of Glory

This will be given to those in church leadership who properly tended their flocks. As St. Peter noted in his first epistle that church leaders ought to, Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; neither being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away (5:2-4). The Lord has promised good to them who love him and who feed his flocks which are scattered across the earth. Pastors and bishops are supposed to love God and preach rightly the truth of his word written, and all who do will receive this crown.

Crown of Righteousness

This will be given to those who love the Lord’s appearing. As St. Paul wrote in second epistle to St. Timothy, Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing (4:8). The Bible tells us to fix our hearts on the coming of the Lord. The wise virgins of St. Matthew’s gospel (25:1-13) have been supplied as an apt example for us. The regenerated Christian will make provision for his watch, and should he nod off to sleep, he will eagerly awaken to go and greet our Lord at his coming. We must be prepared and tell others to seek Christ’s coming. All who are looking and praying for our Lord’s return will receive this crown.

Crown of Rejoicing

This will be given to those who have happily brought souls to Christ. In his first epistle to the Thessalonian church, the apostle Paul penned these words: For what is our hope, or joy or crown of rejoicing: Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming: For ye are our glory and joy (2:19-20). Because the regenerate Christian bears fruit— bringing others to the Lord as he has been called to do— the same shall receive of the Lord a crown of rejoicing on account of that joy in their hearts upon seeing others entering the fold of Christ. Do we tell others about our Lord? Do we desire that others be saved? Do we pray for those who are lost that perhaps God will influence them to come to him either by our witness or that of another regenerated believer? If we love the Lord, then we will also seek to bring others to him, and should they come to Christ, we will rejoice with them in their victory over sin and death.

While salvation is a gift of God to all who are born again of the Holy Ghost, the awarding of crowns is merit-based as we will be judged on how well we performed our duties in our Lord’s service. Consider the parable of the Talents as found in St. Matthew’s gospel (25:14-30). The Lord will extend to those who are faithful a hearty Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter into the joy of thy lord (v.21). God has plans for all who are of his elect beyond the precincts of this life. Therefore be faithful and not fearful. Be considerate of God’s word written and follow it. Stand fast and contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. Be strong in the Lord and the power of his might. Do all these things for a crown awaits you in heaven with our Lord’s greeting. Such is my hope and my prayer for each of you in Christ’s name.

Let us pray,

G

racious and loving God, assist us by means of the Holy Ghost that we might live each day praying for and looking for the coming of thy dear Son; and that we would not miss the joy of the marriage feast which thy wilt prepare for all who love his appearing; for this we ask in the name of him who wears many crowns, and who is our Lord, our King and our Saviour, even Jesus Christ. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

The Islamist group (ISIS) took over Quaragosh, the biggest Christian city in Iraq; 164 men, women and children were beheaded.  People ask where is God?  The real question is where are the people to enforce God’s will.  Pray the people of the world will see Allah for who he is, the Devil.  Pray for those who remain behind that they might find a way to safety.

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of “Separation of Church and State” in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

Pray their basic needs will be met and God will be close to them in this time of need.

We ask that you pray, please ask God that the Holy Ghost might give you insight into how you might make the lives of your friends and family better.  Remember helping others is not just those who you don’t know!

Little Boy Blue

by Eugene Field

The little toy dog is covered with dust,

   But sturdy and stanch he stands;

And the little toy soldier is red with rust,

   And his musket moulds in his hands.

Time was when the little toy dog was new,

   And the soldier was passing fair;

And that was the time when our Little Boy Blue

   Kissed them and put them there.

“Now, don’t you go till I come,” he said,

   “And don’t you make any noise!”

So, toddling off to his trundle-bed,

   He dreamt of the pretty toys;

And, as he was dreaming, an angel song

   Awakened our Little Boy Blue—

Oh! the years are many, the years are long,

   But the little toy friends are true!

Ay, faithful to Little Boy Blue they stand,

   Each in the same old place—

Awaiting the touch of a little hand,

   The smile of a little face;

And they wonder, as waiting the long years through

   In the dust of that little chair,

What has become of our Little Boy Blue,

   Since he kissed them and put them there.

What is Septuagesima?

Septuagesima Sunday is the name given to the third Sunday before Lent. The term is sometimes applied to the period of the liturgical year which begins on this day and lasts through Shrove Tuesday (with the following day being Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins). This period is also known as the Pre-Lenten season or Shrovetide. The next two Sundays are labelled Sexagesima and Quinquagesima, the latter sometimes also called Shrove Sunday. The earliest Septuagesima Sunday can occur is January 18 (Easter falling on March 22 in nonleap year) and the latest is February 22 (Easter falling on April 25 in leap year).

Septuagesima comes from the Latin word for “seventieth,” with Sexagesima and Quinquagesima equalling “sixtieth” and “fiftieth” respectively. They are patterned after the Latin word for the season of Lent, Quadragesima, which means “fortieth” because Lent is forty days long (not counting the Sundays, which are all considered little Easters).  Because a week is only seven days long, not ten, and since even then only six of those days might be counted if the pattern of Quadragesima is followed, Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima, don’t literally correspond to the periods of time they imply. It is interesting, however, that just about 70 days (68 actually) is the minimum number of days between the octave day of the Epiphany on January 14 and Easter, implying that a season just about 70 days long can always fit between the two.

The 17-day period beginning on Septuagesima Sunday was intended to be observed as a preparation for the season of Lent, which is itself a period of spiritual preparation (for Easter). In many countries, however, Septuagesima Sunday still marks the start of the carnival season, culminating on Shrove Tuesday, more commonly known as Mardi Gras. The Gospel reading for Septuagesima week is the parable of the Workers in the Vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16).

[1]Of course, you must consider that overshooting a deathbed conversion will result in no conversion, thus no eternal life.  Convert earlier than needed rather than later than needed.  My dad talks of a bombing range in England, Cowden, on the edge of a cliff.  If you dropped short, you got a score.  If you dropped long, you missed the whole country.  Same idea here.
