The Fifth Sunday after Easter

commonly called Rogation Sunday

Sunday Report

This is the Fourth Sunday after Easter; the Easter season is five Sundays, the last of which, the Fifth Sunday after Easter, is commonly called Rogation Sunday.  Like every day, today we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, “Christ the Lord IS Risen today!

Rogation Sunday

The fifth Sunday after Easter is commonly called Rogation Sunday from the words in the Gospel appointed for the day: “Whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give to you”. (The Latin is ‘Rogare’ – to ask.)  In the strictly biblical context, the chief thing to ask for is the spirit of God to enable us to be true children of God.

In the Western Catholic Churches, including the older Anglican traditions particularly before the Reformation and in some higher churches afterwards, processions to bless the crops and to include “beating the bounds”, developed from the old Roman rites of “Robigalia” (“robigo”: Latin for “rust” or “mould”), when prayers would be offered to the deity for crops to be spared from mildew.

Today the emphasis has shifted.  Asking for God’s blessing on growing crops in fields and gardens, and on young lambs and calves remain.  In the agricultural cycle, the main themes are seed sowing and the tending of the young plants and animals. This does not pre-suppose that all sowing takes place around Rogation.  Sowing is done all the year round, as does the birth and rearing of the young.  It is convenient to fix on one particular festival the time to remember these before God in a public way.

In the Northern Hemisphere, Rogation Sunday takes place in the springtime, when there is a renewing of the earth. In this country, it follows Easter, the season of resurrection. Renewal and resurrection therefore are also underlying themes of this occasion.

But, there is far more to the day than that.  The real meaning is in rogare.  If you don’t ask, you won’t get.  You have to ask God in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for what you want so that you can get what you need.  You have to ask.  Then, once you get what you need, act of the gift and thank God for that gift.

Remember “Ask and ye shall receive.”

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Money

The masses are being plundered on a scale which is inconceivable and unmatched in history; it is the source of the middle classes dying in the developed world. The developed world has become a well-disguised plantation of serfs and slaves. They are given nothing to store and save their labor in as the currency they hold are printed endlessly and have no reserves to back them and are redeemable in NOTHING, contrary to every sound currency in history. Modern day money is nothing less than a wealth confiscation scheme run by morally and fiscally bankrupt central banks and governments against their own citizens.

Choice

Let us recollect that peace or war will not always be left to our option; that however moderate or unambitious we may be, we cannot count upon the moderation, or hope to extinguish the ambition of others.

Vision

When you view your own sins your eyes are dim and sickly; so why, for a friend’s failings, do you have the sight of an eagle?

from Bishop Jerry

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid…

Isaiah 12:2

Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

St. Luke 4:8

Beware of antichrist; for unhappily a love of walls has seized you; unhappily the church of God which you venerate exists in houses and buildings; unhappily under these you find the name peace. Is it doubtful that in these antichrist will have his seat? Safer to me are the mountains and the woods.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister or our Deacon Striker.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 175-176, with the Collect first:

The Collect for The Fifth Sunday after Easter,

commonly called Rogation Sunday.

The Collect.

O

 LORD, from whom all good things do come; Grant to us thy humble servants, that by thy holy inspiration we may think those things that are good, and by thy merciful guiding may perform the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen.

The Epistle for today came from the First Chapter of the General Epistle of Saint James beginning at the Twenty-Second Verse. Saint James tells us not to just talk about being Christians, but to act on those beliefs and do things.  We act in accordance with the principles set forth by Christ.  We gain our salvation through the freely given gift of Grace by our Lord Jesus Christ.   Once given, and accepted; if we truly accept the gift, it will be evident in our actions.

St. James reminds us we not only must:

  • Talk the Talk;

           but

  • Walk the Walk.

    We do not gain eternal life and salvation by our good works here on earth, but only by the Grace of God, through His Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Through Christ our sins are atoned for that we might go to heaven.  True enough, but we demonstrate our attempt to follow his instructions by our works here on earth.  Remember, it is by only by our actions we are we truly known.

B

E ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: for he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Today’s Holy Gospel came from the Sixteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the Twenty-Third Verse. Jesus told his disciples that when they pray to the Father, they should ask in His Name and what they asked for would be given.  But, you must ask to receive.  Jesus told us not to ask Him to pray to the Father, but rather that we pray directly to the Father, asking for what we will in His name, because God loves us because we love Jesus.  This explains why many of our prayers end in, “we ask all this in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” or similar words.  So, if we are to if we are not to ask Jesus to pray for us, why would we ask “saints” and such.   We can talk directly to God and we are supposed to!

Jesus went on to say the forces of this world would scatter the disciples, they would be alone in the world.  Yet like Jesus, they would not be abandoned by all; He would be with them, as would the Father.  For as always, the Father is with them, as He is with Him; as He is with us.

V

ERILY, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Rogation Sunday

St. Andrews Anglican Church

1 May 2016, Anno Domini

The Collect for The Fifth Sunday after Easter,

commonly called Rogation Sunday.

The Collect.

O

 LORD, from whom all good things do come; Grant to us thy humble servants, that by thy holy inspiration we may think those things that are good, and by thy merciful guiding may perform the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen.

T

hen will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. 26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. 28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. 29 I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you. 30 And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen. 31 Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations. 32 Not for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord GOD, be it known unto you: be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel. 33 Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day that I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquities I will also cause you to dwell in the cities, and the wastes shall be builded. 34 And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed by. 35 And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited. 36 Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the LORD have spoken it, and I will do it. 37 Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them; I will increase them with men like a flock. 38 As the holy flock, as the flock of Jerusalem in her solemn feasts; so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of men: and they shall know that I am the LORD.  (Ezek 36:25-38)

            Water baptism is one of the two Sacraments of the Reformation Church. Here in Ezekiel, we have a fore-shadowing of this initiatory Sacrament of the covenantal relationship between a man or woman and their Lord. Though water baptism itself is no regenerative to the extent that the physical process itself washes and cleanses of sin, the inward and spiritual grace that is imparted either to the person, or to the child through the parent’s promise, secures the blessing of covenant for the child until he is able to publicly confirm that covenant by means of Confirmation. 25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. The evidence of a valid baptism with water is the new heart that follows the baptism (but it does not precede it). There are two profoundly important dates in this world to describe a person’s life – the date of birth, and the date of death; but in the Kingdom of God, there is only one of any account – the date of the new birth. There is no date of death associated with the new birth since it continues for Eternity.

            I have seen men who were absolute scoundrels – alcoholics, adulterers, cowards before the enemy, etc – but once they have come to know Christ as Lord and Savior; the former characters are buried in the baptism of a new life. One would no longer recognize that the new man was the same fellow as the old; and, of course, they are not the same. The man is the very same, but it is the heart that is new. The heart of the Christian rules over the mind and body in the new man whereas in the old, the flesh of the body ruled over the heart and mind. 26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. A stone has no life in it just as the sinner, being dead in trespasses and sin, has no life in his stone-dead heart. It is the heart that provides life, not the brain. The life blood is supplied by the heart: For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. (Lev 17:11) Yes, God has given unto us on the altar the only blood that can truly give life – that of His only Begotten Son. The new heart that God grants to us when we receive His Son, Jesus, is bought and paid for at the greatest expense Heaven could ever pay. It is a clean heart and a full heart – not full of the old sinful nature of man, but filled with love and the spiritual nature of its Maker.

            The new heart changes not only the desires of our hearts, but our manner of outward contact as well. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. It is not possible to obey God without the seal of His nature in our hearts, and that seal is love.

            How I long to live in a land of my fathers that is righteous and lovelier than all other lands. The old days have gone glimmering when I hung on every word my father taught me of the Holy Bible and its application – not only to the spiritual aspects of life – but the mundane as well. My father was not perfect, but he was a perfect as any man I have ever known. He lived life according to the dictates of a conscience that was fixed on God’s Word. 28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. How I would cherish a return to the days when common decency and moral conduct prevailed in the land of my nativity; but that land is no longer the one of my memories, but the once and future Israel of God.

            That perfect land, and that perfect Way, lies just beyond the veil of our purest imaginations. We may not know wholly what grandeur would best describe Heaven’s Land, but we can be sure that it exceeds every expectation of those imaginations. 29 I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you. 30 And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen. We often fail to grasp the hidden meaning of our travails on earth; and equally, we too often forget from whence come the showers of blessing in fruitful plenty and increase of crops. The travail of famine is the consequence of our own doing, but the showers of blessing flow from the open hand of God.

            When the hand of plenty is opened to our gratification, suddenly we will awaken to our unworthiness of the blessing. The dark days of our sins loom large before us, and we are forced, not by our wills, but by that of God, to repent in sackcloth and ashes. 31 Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations.  Have you ever loathed yourself? I hope you have, for until you arrive at the point of loathing the sinner and old man that you were, you can never come to the Table of the Lord. In speaking to the old Jewish Church that has greatly apostacized, God makes His will known to save them despite themselves. We too were saved despite ourselves, being dead as the corpse of four days. We were totally unworthy, and if we think we are worthy, we most certainly are the most unworthy of all. 32 Not for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord GOD, be it known unto you: be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel.

            We are saved for a cause and for a purpose. We are not saved because we are such fine specimens of humanity, but just the opposite. It is for the glory of God that he can take rotting corpse and turn it into a kind and loving worker of righteousness. We are saved by grace, indeed, but that is unto good works, and as an example to the lost who God intends to gather into one fold.

            Like the Old Testament Church of Israel, we often believe we can reserve God to ourselves as was the hope of Jonah in defying God to go to Nineveh. But the works of God in the hearts of His Elect is intended to broaden, not confine, His great love to all of His Creation whom He has chosen among the children of men. . . . . the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us(Romans 5:5) It should be our prayer the love of God is shed abroad to enlarge the boundaries of the Holy Tent rather than to slam the door to the Kingdom behind us.

Are you the shining light to the world that God intends you to be?

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

We are in the Easter Season which consists of Easter and the following four Sundays, until we get to Rogation Sunday.  This is a time we should work on centering our lives on the central figure in our religion, Jesus Christ.

Consider these words from the Collect:

by thy holy inspiration we may think those things that are good, and by thy merciful guiding may perform the same

As we near the Ascension and thus Pentecost and the arrival of the Holy Ghost, we ask for God’s “holy inspiration we may think those things that are good”, that is to say help from the Holy Ghost so we might direct our souls to the things we cannot see as good without His Help.   Once we see them, we need His “merciful guiding may perform the same…”.  After all, what good is it to know what we should do, if we won’t, can’t or don’t do it?

That brings us right to Saint James’ point, we gain our salvation through the freely given gift of Grace by our Lord Jesus Christ.   Once given, it must be accepted.  If we truly accept the gift, it will be evident in our actions.  Our actions should reflect that we are a hearer and a doer of the Word, and not just a hearer only. To truly a believer requires that we make that belief known in our lives through action.  If you are going to be a Christian, the key is right there – BE.  Being requires action, not just diction.  Many can talk the talk, but will they walk the walk too? Being a Christian requires doing both, which may be very difficult sometimes, but it must be done. It is the only way we will have salvation, through Christ, but yet we must be with Him, by acting for Him. If you are going to be a Christian, what you say is of no import compared to what you DO.  Do your actions reflect God’s image or that of the other guy?  Who do you put first?  Pretty basic questions that often we don’t like the answer to. But they must be answered nevertheless, all the same.

We must align our lives to be able to show people we do follow Christ. There are too many people who claim to be Christians, who are clearly not, because their lives do not reflect their stated belief. We must not let this happen. We must show the truth of John 14:6  “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” To show this truth we have to live that truth through our actions. It is not just enough to say we know the Word of God, if we truly know the Word of God, we will act upon that Word of God and serve Him in this life.

Without Christ’s guiding light, we are not on the path to holiness and righteousness. We must show this in our lives, by living and breathing His Word, and using His Word to guide us throughout our lives. These are all actions we take to show that we have belief and are acting upon that belief.  This is important to our souls for our spiritual health, and as well as our physical health too. We need all the Help of the Holy Ghost to keep us on this path. How do we keep on this path?

We find a lot of help in John’s words, he give us insight into things that none of the other disciples do.  We need help.  We pray for help. Pray for help that we might act, and that is how we keep on the straight, narrow and uphill path.  So, what about prayer?  Let’s start with to whom do we pray?

Jesus is pretty clear.  Don’t pray to Him, pray to God.  Feel free to use His Name.  Pray to God in His Name.  In effect, we are CC’ing (Carbon Copying, to use an archaic term which as transitioned to an electronic mail (email) term) Jesus in our prayers. We are not to put Him in the To: line, but the CC line. Not addressing Him directly, but to address God directly with Jesus copied, as it were. He tells us God loves us because we love Jesus.   But, pray to God. I think that not many people have ever understood this part of scripture, as I have heard people pray to Jesus when he is not the correct person to address your prayers to. He specifically tells us to direct the prayers to His Father, who can better help us.

If that is the case, seems like it pretty much rules out praying to Saint Bob, does it not? If we can’t pray to Jesus, why would we be praying to a Saint?  We would be praying to a  human, who we may or may not put any trust in. But if we pray to God, we can be certain He will answer us, and even if we don’t like the answer, we know that is the course we will have to take. It doesn’t matter if we like God’s answer or not, we still have to listen to it, and do it anyway, knowing it will be the right path in the end. We will always have some sort of a struggle with this in our lives, but if we turn to God, He will help us win our struggle.

We have to listen to His Answer and think on it and then act upon what His Answer is and not just dismiss it. Dismissing it is all too easy for us to do, since we are naturally inclined not to do it. But we have to think that dismissing His Answers will not gain us anything in the long or short term.  We need to listen to His Answers and then act upon them, which will be the key to true happiness within our lives.

We have to realize what we truly need and ask that He will open our hearts, minds and souls to His answer that we might act upon His answer. The critical portion is that we act upon the answer that we are given, to do our best for Him and that our friends, family and coworkers and neighbors might see the light we shine for Him and see who we follow in word and in deed. We must show others not just through our words, but through our actions that we truly belong to Christ’s flock. We must show great love for our fellow man, even to the point of death, through our actions, to reflect Christ’s love for us, that He too loved us even to the point of death.

So, pray to God, ask for what you want in Jesus’ Name.  He always listens and He always delivers.  The problem for us is that what He delivers is what we need, not necessarily what we want. Our wants and our needs are oft different, in fact they are seldom the same. But we should want what we need, and God will help us understand that, if we be a doer and a hearer of His Word. He will always give us what we need, but will we listen to what He wants us to do?

Need and want, they are both four letter words, oft used interchangeably, which do not mean the same thing.

God’s Will is always done, we just don’t understand.  Accept what happens as acceptable, so long as you have done all you can.  In the end, all that counts is where you go when you leave here.  That depends on your actions in following Jesus’ instructions.  If you believe, you are safe.  Now and forever.

  • Talk the Talk;

           AND

  • Walk the Walk.

It is an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

B

E ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. (James 1:22-27)

The great reformer Martin Luther, did not like the epistle of James. He had come to a saving knowledge of his Savior, Jesus Christ, with the understanding nothing he, Luther, could do would save him from eternal damnation.  It was God in giving his Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins, who would save us. Luther came to this understanding by pouring over the letters and gospels in the New Testament.  Being originally trained as a lawyer, Luther looked at spiritual matters in a practical-legal way. He understood that his sin-filled life could not be cleaned by anything he did to try and scrub that sin.  He had gone to Rome to seek answers to his burning desire for surety. He knew that there was something missing in the Mediaeval church of Rome. He asked many questions of any learned man he met, most pressing question being how could he be sure he was heaven bound.  No one seemed to have the answer.  Then he came upon the answer in his studies. He understood universal sin or being born in sin, what he wanted to know was how to be free of that curse.  ‘…for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus…’

Now Luther understood.  There was nothing he could do to obtain his salvation. It had to come from God, through his Son, Jesus Christ.  That was the only way man could be saved.

So why did Luther have problems with the letter of James?  It seemed to negate the idea that salvation came from God, with no help from man.  But after careful examination of the words, we see that James was writing to those who were in the Kingdom, not those outside of the Kingdom of God.   He was urging fellow servants of Christ to put their faith, which came from hearing the Word, into action. James was telling the early Church to go into action. It was time to move to the front and engage the world. It was time to not only be godly, but to act godly, especially to those who were the most vulnerable; widows and orphans.  How timely.

Today we have many widows and orphans.  Not necessarily in a physical way, but most definitely in a spiritual way.  The head of household, the father/husband is MIA.  In many cases we have a father/husband who is in the house, but in reality he is not on duty.  He has abandoned his wife and children to the cares and woes of this world. There is no husbandly love nor is there any fatherly guidance being afforded.  What is the result?  We have a crude, chaotic world in which bad language, violence and meanness is common.  We have a break down of civil codes, the breakdown of the moral compass, the breakdown of common society because men/husbands/fathers have gone missing.

In many ways I believe James was writing to the present church era. We as men have abandoned our duties, we have allowed the world to take over the nurture and care of our families— which has led to a great calamity in our civil society today.  What is right, what is honorable, what is true, what is morally correct; all of these questions go a begging.

Men, it is time to step up to the plate, to put your shoulder to the wheel, to step into the breech and be doers of the Word, not hearers only.   You ask how do I do this?

  1. Come to church.

  2. Study the Word of God

  3. Apply what you have heard and studied, both at church and in your private devotions, to your every day Christian walk.

  4. Now is the time to come forth.     Now is the time to go back on duty.  Now is the time to lead your family.

In the next month and a half we will celebrate both mothers and fathers on a national level.

Instead of celebrating as the rest of the nation does, do something special men, dedicate your lives to the service of your King, the author and finisher of your salvation, by being doers of the Word, not just hearers only. Don’t deceive yourselves.

Let us pray:

O

 Almighty God, who pourest out on all who desire it, the spirit of grace and of supplication; Deliver us, when we draw nigh to thee, from coldness of heart and wandering of mind, that with stedfast thoughts and kindled affections, we may worship thee in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord.                                                      Amen.

O

 God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light riseth up in darkness for the godly; Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what thou wouldest have us to do, that the Spirit of Wisdom may save us from all false choices, and that in thy light we may see light, and in thy straight path may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

T

he Peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: And the Blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you, and remain with you always.  Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, expouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Fifth Sunday after Easter

Today is called “Rogation Sunday” in our church calendar. The title “Rogation” is derived from the Latin word “rogare” which means “to ask.” In today’s Gospel (John 16:23b), our Lord said unto his disciples, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you. The apostle Paul penned an uplifting affirmation of our Lord’s words in his epistle to the Ephesians: Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen (3:20- 21). The Rev. Matthew Henry once wrote the following comment about Ephesians 3:20, “There is an inexhaustible fullness of grace and mercy in God which the prayers of all the saints can never draw dry. Whatever we may ask or think, still God is able to do more, abundantly more. We should encourage our faith by a consideration of his all-sufficiency and almighty power.”

When we pray give us this day our daily bread in the Lord’s Prayer, we are asking God to provide for our sustenance today. How many times has God opened his hand to us in ways which often are more than we need? And how many times do we take his gifts for granted? Witness the words of our Lord in St. Matthew’s gospel account, seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you (6:25-34). Having an established daily prayer life opens the door to more blessings than we can count. As one church billboard read: “God answers knee-mail.”

Rev. EM Bounds wrote extensively on the efficacious nature of prayer. He once opined that, “…prayer brings to us the blessings which we need, and which only God can give, and which prayer can alone convey to us… God’s only condition and limitation of prayer is found in the character of the one who prays. The measure of our faith and praying is the measure of his giving” (On Prayer, p. 206). With that in mind, let us examine the following prayer requests as found within the pages of Scripture.

After leaving Laban to return home to the land of Canaan, an anxious Jacob pleaded with God over his upcoming reunion with his brother Esau. God more than satisfied his need for security when his brother came and greeted him with a loving embrace(Genesis 32:9-12).

Hannah poured out her soul unto the LORD only to have the high priest rebuke her for being drunk. But when he heard the particulars of her prayer, he blessed her and sent her home. Hannah did receive from the LORD a son, Samuel, whom she dedicated to the LORD and God, in turn, gave her five other children for which she had not asked (I Samuel 1:9-18).

Nehemiah prayed in sorrow for God to restore the city of Jerusalem. In his capacity as a high Persian official he could hardly imagined that his lord would permit him to journey from his court and restore the city of his ancestors. But that is exactly what Artaxerxes did. God can turn the heart of even the most obstinate person if such be necessary to assist his own (1:4-11).

Daniel prayed daily in the face of being an outlaw against Darius the king and was thrown by his enemies into the lions’ den. Nevertheless, God heard Daniel’s prayer and preserved him. He eventually gave to the prophet his assurance by means of an angel that Daniel would receive an even better reward at the end of days (1:4-11; 12:13).

Finally there was Saint Paul himself. After meeting our Lord on the road to Damascus, the apostle prayed and received not only the return of his sight, but he received the gift of God’s abundant grace which opened the way for him to advance the cause of Christ in his day. Such assurance was on his mind when he wrote to the youthful Timothy, Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing (II St. Timothy 4:8).

God is ready to hear our requests and he expects them. He is gracious to listen to our petitions and will, in his own time, answer them has he sees fit. That is where our patient acceptance of his will comes into play. We must learn to wait on him. And even then, he may not grant us what we asked for reasons which he will eventually make known to us. God is like that. He may close a door on an activity, or a relationship, only to open another which will be far and away better for us. We must trust him with our prayer requests and in that trust we must be confident that he will neither let us down nor forsake us. He may not give us what we want, but he will give us what we need most.

In many churches today, the desire for material gain has crowded out the notion of patient acceptance of God’s will as they have substituted the false gospel of prosperity for the gospel of Grace. The fact is that not every person is spiritually equipped to handle such a gift. Nevertheless, God gives his gifts both spiritual and material to those who, in his mind, can handle such. He is selective based upon his standards and not ours. Because God did not give you a material gift does not mean that he does not love you, or that you are not in good standing with him as a Christian. Trusting God with our needs does not translate into him giving us a boxcar load of money. We might enjoy that, but how would such a gift be used by most people? They would waste it on things and not on what was truly needed. Just look at most of the lottery and gambling winners. As they say, “Easy come, easy go.”

In closing, let us consider one final example: the widow of Nain (Luke 7:11-15). She was in mourning for her dead son and only child. What a loss she had just experienced. She was likely pouring out her heart to God when God the Son came and restored to her that which she had lost. That is answered prayer! What a relief and what a gift from him who hears us and who desires our good. Jesus Christ is the ultimate in gifts which God could have given us. Our Lord shed his blood so that all who have been born again of his Spirit might be saved from the power of death, hell and the grave. Such a gift is beyond estimation. And God has given that gift to us because we believe on the name of his only begotten Son.

My prayer for each of you is found in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, That [God] would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God (3:16-19).

Let us pray,

F

ather, help us in our prayers and petitions to ask of thee for that which is expedient for us, and to trust that you will answer our prayers in consideration of the same; for this we ask in the name of our Intercessor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

After Church Hospitality

We would like some pictures of your after service gatherings.  Come on! Help out!

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Sara asks that you pray for guidance for her as she deals with the stresses of her family and life.  Pray that she can separate those things which she can affect from those things which she cannot and give her grace to accept that she cannot do everything and can only change those things within her control.  She asks for God’s help for her business so that she might remain gainfully employed while keeping up with the needs of her mother and husband and healing her own problems.

Jacquie to open her heart to God and accept His Love and Grace.

Diocese of Virginia

Saint Joseph of Arimathea Anglican Orthodox Church is under a lot of stress.  We all are, but they need even more prayer.  Rev Roger Jessup, their wonderful minister, had to retire as he was so pressed by the duties of a primary care giver, in addition to all the worries of this world.  Pray for trust in God for each member of the parish and for them to find economic relief.

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • ·         One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself
  • ·         All religions are not equal
  • ·         All ways of life are not equal;
  • ·         The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • ·         All rights come from God, not the State;
  • ·         Good;
  • ·         Bad;
  • ·         Evil;
  • ·         Right;
  • ·         Wrong;
  • ·         Allah is the Devil;
  • ·         Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

The Islamist group (ISIS) took over Quaragosh, the biggest Christian city in Iraq; 164 men, women and children were beheaded.  People ask where is God?  The real question is where are the people to enforce God’s will.  Pray the people of the world will see Allah for who he is, the Devil.  Pray for those who remain behind that they might find a way to safety.

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of “Separation of Church and State” in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

Education

Aaron is in need of God’s guidance to see what he needs to do to fulfill his potential and live his life in a manner which will bring true happiness to him.

Thomas Dabney is attending Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, to finish his Bachelor’s Degree.  Please pray for Thomas to focus on education and do his very best at school.

Various Special Requests

This is a horrible time for the people of India, Christians in particular; they are having problems with Hunger, Bank Closings, Transportation and Schools not functioning.  Pray for the Leaders and Members of our Church in Eluru Andhra Pradesh. Pray their basic needs will be met and God will be close to them in this time of need.

We ask that you pray, please ask God that the Holy Ghost might give you insight into how you might make the lives of your friends and family better.  Remember helping others is not just those who you don’t know!
