243rd Birthday of the

United States

Marine Corps

No better friend, no worse enemy

On 10 November 1775, Captain Samuel Nicholas formed two battalions of Continental Marines at Tun’s Tavern in Philadelphia as naval infantry in accordance with a resolution of the Continental Congress.  They were to “be able to serve to advantage by sea when required” and “that they be distinguished by the names of the first & second battalions of American Marines.”

No better friend: someone who will kill to protect you; someone who will give their life for you; someone who will be right there in your times of trouble and, thinking of you and your problems, will sacrifice so that you might get through your problem.

No worst enemy: someone who will not hesitate to destroy you even if that means destroying himself in the process; someone who will chase you down to the ends of the earth to extract revenge; someone who will cause you blood and tears and smile when it happens.

With a Marine as your friend, you have a person who will kill to protect you. With a Marine as your enemy, you have a person who will kill you. Pretty simple, huh?

The concept comes from the epitaph of Lucius Cornelius Sulla, famous general and legendary dictator of ancient Rome:

“No friend ever served me, and no enemy ever wronged me, whom I have not repaid in full.”

Happy 243rd Birthday, USMC!

Veterans Day

Veterans Day

Saturday, 11 November 2017, was Veterans Day.  It is the Eleventh Hour of the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month.  Is not the first Monday or Friday in anything, it is not an occasion to sleep in or barbeque.  It was originally Armistice Day, the day the Great War (World War I) ended.  The armistice was signed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month ending the War to End all Wars which took the lives of about 20 million people.  We remembered that day until World War II, a war which took the lives of about 70 million people, not including the 25 million killed by the Soviets internally.  In total, almost 100 million people lost their lives during the period of this war.

Our country has chosen this day, Armistice Day, to honor those who have served our country.  This is not the same as Memorial Day, the last weekend in May, during which we honor those who have given their lives for our country.

On this day, we honor those who have and do serve our country: men and women who have stepped forward when their country called; some even before the call.  We honor those who have put their country before themselves and families.

Sometimes we forget the sacrifices made by the families.  It is one thing to be in combat, forward deployed or on TDY at Christmas.  It is another to have your son, daughter, husband or wife gone.

We can both tell you from personal experience that it is a lot easier to go to war than to send someone to war.

It is easy to think the country is going to hell, in or out of the proverbial hand basket and it may well be.  Yet, so far we have young people who step forward and fill the breech in the line.  How long we know not, but still they come forward.  While they come we are safe.  When they stop, we fall.  Do not fail them.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Trinity

Today we celebrated the Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Trinity Sunday.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

The Fall of Rome or Here

Do not blame Caesar (or fill in a substitute name), blame the people of Rome (USA) who have so enthusiastically acclaimed and adored him and rejoiced in their loss of freedom and danced in his path and given him triumphal processions. Blame the people who hail him when he speaks in the Forum of the “new wonderful good society” which shall now be Rome’s, interpreted to mean “more money, more ease, more security, and more living fatly at the expense of the industrious”.

Marcus Tullius Cicero

True Evil

The greatest evil is not now done in those sordid “dens of crime” that Dickens loved to paint. It is not done even in concentration camps and labour camps. In those we see its final result. But it is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice.

The Screwtape Letters

It would tire the hands of an angel to write down all the pardons God bestows upon true penitent believers.

William Bates

Do you think that you deserve forgiveness? If you do, you are not a Christian.

  1. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

Jeremiah 2:13

They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

Luke 5:31

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are call in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God and Father of all who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Ephesians 4:4-6

There is a common, worldly kind of Christianity in this day, which many have, and think they have enough—a cheap Christianity which offends nobody, and requires no sacrifice—which costs nothing, and is worth nothing.

JC Ryle

No nation is sovereign if it cannot control its borders and have full authority to determine who can become citizens. More than a century ago, the Supreme Court announced what was considered the commonsense understanding of the matter when it remarked that ‘it is an accepted maxim of international sovereignty, and essential to self-preservation, to forbid the entrance of foreigners within its dominions, or to admit them only in such cases and upon such conditions as it may see fit to prescribe.’ Today’s progressive liberals, however, no longer consider self-preservation a rational goal. To them… it is now an act of injustice… [which] must give way to openness and diversity, even if it exposes the nation to danger and undermines its sovereignty… The nation-state is the stumbling block standing in the way of progress toward the uniform global regime… [It] will dispense with the inconvenience of having to rest its powers on the consent of the governed, because it will not be a constitutional government but an administrative tyranny. In this future world state there will be no citizens, only subjects. Feudalism will have returned, but now on a global scale. Many on the Right who support [a] supposedly ‘compassionate’ immigration policy do not realize they are contributing to the realization of this future state.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The propers for the Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Trinity can be found on Page 223-224:

The Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Trinity

The Collect.

O

 LORD, we beseech thee, absolve thy people from their offences; that through thy bountiful goodness we may all be delivered from the bands of those sins, which by our frailty we have committed. Grant this, O heavenly Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen.

The Epistle for today came from the First Chapter of Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians, beginning at the Third Verse.  Writing to the people of Colossus, Paul tells them that he is constantly praying for them and exhorts them to do their very best to actually fulfill the promises they have made to God, to Walk the Walk, not just Talk the Talk; to study hard the Word and use the strength they will get from God to act on the things they have learned and professed.

W

e give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard  of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, for the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: as ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ; who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and long-suffering with joyfulness; giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.

The Holy Gospel came from the Ninth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew beginning at the Eighteenth Verse.  While Jesus was talking to some of the disciples of John the Baptist, one of the local politicians whose daughter had just died came to Him with faith that He could return her to life.  As he was leaving His meeting with the disciples to follow the politician, a woman who had been ill for many years, reached out in faith to “touch His garment.”  She knew He was the key to her life, though she likely had no real understanding of just how.  She had faith in Jesus.  As she touched his garment, He turned saying, “Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole.”  She was instantly healed.  Like the Faithful Centurion[1]: Truth set her free, faith made her whole. Jesus continued on to the politician’s house and returned his daughter to the living.  Consider that in none of these cases did Jesus’ saving grace hinge on actions by the saved, but rather their faith that Jesus would save them, then acting in accordance with that faith.  It was not what they did, but what He did that saved them.  But, His actions were in accord with their faith.

W

hile Jesus spake these things unto John’s disciples, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples. And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: for she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, he said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose. And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.

Amen.

M

y little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:  2.And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.  (1 John 2:1-2)

This COLLECT is one of the more interesting and inspirational of all of the Prayer Book. It encapsulates succinctly the mighty truth of salvation and forgiveness made available in Christ our LORD. As with the other Collects, it rightly bases its petitions upon those sure promises made firm in Holy Scripture. Herein lies the power of the Collects – that is, their biblical soundness which never presumes, but bases the petition upon those promises made full in Jesus.

Though God is ever ready to absolve those who truly repent of their sins in Christ, He nonetheless desires that we make petition for the grant of absolution. Even in worldly judiciaries, pardons are not granted except by formal petition. God is like many loving fathers of this world who dote upon their children. His joy is made full when they ask for those things He is anxious and desirous to grant.

Who are those people who are privileged to receive this absolution from God? Who are those referred to as “thy people?” Concerning the Articles of Religion, the catechumen is asked their meaning:

Question. What dost thou chiefly learn in these Articles of thy Belief?

Answer. First, I learn to believe in God the Father, who hath made me, and all the world. Secondly, in God the Son, who hath redeemed me, and all mankind. Thirdly, in God the Holy Ghost, who sanctifieth me, and all the elect people of God. (1662 BoCP)

This Collect is not the prayer of the profligate sinner, but the elect child of God. It is a prayer to be addressed communally in Church among those who know Christ as Lord and who petition for absolution of those sins which they have committed through a prevailing weakness of the flesh. These are NOT intentional sins, but sins performed in absent-mindedness of duty to God. Sins of both commission AND omission fall into the categories for which we pray absolution.

Herein lies an extremely important truth – only God can forgive and absolve sins. It is not the priest or Bishop who absolves, but simply pronounces the will of God to absolve and forgive all who truly repent. The Absolution is simply a confirmation by the celebrant of those promises made sure in Christ to forgive all who appeal to Him. The absolution as contained in the Order for Holy Communion reads:

A

LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; Have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The absolution for Morning Prayer reads:

A

LMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live, hath given power, and commandment, to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins. He pardoneth and absolveth all those who truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel.

Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Of course, we seek absolution in the Collect for one purpose: to clean our consciences and to remove guilt of sins. It is intended to reflect a conscious effort on the part of the believer to amend constantly his sinful ways through the sanctifying efficacy of the Holy Ghost. We are not perfect creatures. We are subject to the same desires and temptations of the flesh as all men have been from the Garden Gate at Eden. But when we have come in to the family of God, our spirits do constantly battle with the vulgar and profane promptings of the flesh to overcome and to put our bodies under subjection to the Spirit.

Every sin committed is like a rope binding our flesh and subduing our spirits. Once repented and absolved, those ropes of bondage are cut from us, and we are free in Christ. through thy bountiful goodness we may all be delivered from the bands of those sins, which by our frailty we have committedOnly by the goodness, and not the judgment, of God can our sins be remitted and absolved. Were justice to be dealt every sinner, no sins would ever be absolved. We stand convicted and deserve the fires of Hell, but Christ has paid our sin-debt for us by His sufferings and passion of the cross. This opens the flood-gates of mercy for all who will receive. Have you?

The Gospel

hile he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. 19 And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples. 20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: 21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. 22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. 23 And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, 24 He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. 25 But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose. 26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land. (Matt 9:18-26)

There are two miracles in the text that are remarkable for timing and self-assessment. First of all, the timing. A ruler of the local synagogue comes to Christ with heartbroken appeal that Christ will come and raise her up. First of all, he waited a bit late to come to Christ in the human conception of urgency. The girl had been seriously ill, and yet the rabbi waits until she is dead before coming to Christ. Had his faith been exceptional, that would have been a compliment to it; however, he was a Jewish rabbi and had yet to accept Christ as Lord. So he may have lingered late from a matter of pride. Regardless, the main point is that he came to Christ at last. Christ knew full well that a lady whom He had known from before the world was made was approaching Him stealthily, but, still, He made as if to go with the synagogue ruler.

At that very moment, a woman with a serious issue of blood was approaching. She, too, had lingered long in pain and suffering before making the only move that could heal her. She sought Christ out of desperation. I remind you that she had spent all her life’s savings on physicians for the past twelve years and was no better. In fact, her illness grew worse. (see Mark 5:25,26) It is noteworthy to each of us personally that we often wait until a matter becomes desperate before we seek out the Lord’s blessing on our condition. But, again, the important point is that she came to Christ at last. Though there were throngs around Christ – many bustling and touching Him in random incidence – He nonetheless felt a different kind of touch when the woman touched the hem of His garment. It was a touch of faith, and the Lord felt it. When we pray in faith, the Lord is keen to hear our prayer. The woman was healed of her physical incapacity, but more importantly, she was made whole in body AND soul! Jesus does not do half-way healings.

I have wondered why this seemingly incidental second miracle took place at the very moment the Lord was proceeding to the house of Jarius. I believe it must have been to instill a greater faith in the heart of Jarius who was still steeped in the Jewish religion devoid of grace. For God to perform miraculous healing, there must be a lively faith in the subject of that miracle. And once Jarius saw the woman healed, his faith was multiplied.

Once the Lord arrived at the house of Jarius, many Jews were gathered weeping bitterly. This outburst is often as much show for some, but a true expression of grief to those who know and love the maiden. When the Lord asks them to make way for His entry, and tells them the maiden is not dead but sleepeth, their presumed grief turns to scornful laughing – not so much grief at all. They know death, but the Lord knows LIFE! He goes to the young girl, takes her by her tiny hand, and says, “Talitha cumi” which means “young maiden, or little lamb, arise!” (see Mark 5:41). 42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. 43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat. (Mark 5:42-43) Sick people doe not eat! Why did Jesus tell the company present to tell no one about the miracle.   Did He honestly believe the astonished observers could keep such a secret? I do not believe so. I believe He often gave such counsel to remind each of us of what a wonderful thing He has done in our own lives. Can we keep that secret? No, we will go out and tell every soul we meet of the great mercy and grace God has extended to us even if He bids us keep it secret!

Have we done so?

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

Amen.

Consider these words from the Collect, … absolve thy people from their offences; that through thy bountiful goodness we may all be delivered from the bands of those sins, which by our frailty we have committed. …

The Collect asks God to pardon our offences, that is our wrongs, failures and failures to act as we should, where we have “erred and stray from His Way like lost sheep”, through His great mercy.   Note, through the mercy of God, not because we have been good, but because we cannot be good without Him in the form of the Holy Ghost.  Without His Light, we are darkness.  This is yet another common theme running through all of the collects. The theme is simple. We need Him to deliver us from the multitudes of sins, by which our frail nature of ungodliness, we have committed.  Each day we find new ways to sin, or at least we think that until we find in fact there is no new thing under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 1:9)

Truly there is nothing new.  There are no new sins to be invented, to paraphrase the scripture quote from Ecclesiastes. The human heart is always as dark and depraved without the shining light of the Holy Spirit as it ever has been. It has been this way since the time of Adam. People are always seeking ways to get around God and His Laws, but they truly cannot. Our only hope is to be in Him and be reborn in the Spirit. As Abraham Lincoln said in the famous Gettysburg address “That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom.”  Only under God, can we be reborn a new, and as he said, our freedom will be reborn again.  We can only be reborn in the spirit and not the flesh as Nicodemus found out when he came to Jesus by night. In order to be reborn a new in the spirit, we first have to ask for our sins to be pardoned and be delivered from our sins by Jesus Christ Our Lord and Our Heavenly Father.  The key word is ask. This will never happen for us if we do not take the first step and ask God to enter into our hearts and regenerate our spirit. He will not come in uninvited into to our hearts. We have to allow the Holy Spirit access in order for our spirits to be revitalized.

And once we ask for our sins to be pardoned, we have to go forth and persevere in our efforts not to sin again. Only then can we be truly re-born. Through a sense of godliness, we obtain that “new birth” of freedom. If everybody in this country followed that simple advice, just think of how great our country would be. Look at Abraham Lincoln for an example of a Godly man, one of the greatest Presidents ever elected, who by following God and His Word, helped preserve the Union of this wonderful nation, albeit at a great cost to our freedom and with a huge expansion of government[2].

In the Epistle, Paul tells the Colossians if we are to be reborn through Christ into a “new birth of freedom”, as Lincoln said, we must place our hope not on Earth, but in Our Heavenly Father and his abode above.

Unlike earth where moth and rust doth corrupt and thieves break through and steal, in heaven, we shall encounter none of that. We shall encounter none of the imperfections we see here on Earth daily. It is truly a wonderful place to be. We must keep our sights on our destination of heaven. We have to always keep this in mind every time we are weighed down by the woes of the world and of troubles in our lives. We have to always keep flying our spiritual airplane no matter what happens in this life. If we put our goal as going to heaven and setting our airplane on the magenta line towards heaven, eventually we will get there. We may encounter severe turbulence from events in our lives that threaten to upset our spiritual state, but as long as we keep flying the spiritual airplane, all will be well in the end. Heaven is truly the only place where we can place any hope and not be disappointed. God will never fail us; we just need to not fail Him. We have to do our best to follow Him here on earth and do our best to spread to Word to the people around us. If we do this, the truth shall shine forth through in our work, at home, in our daily lives and people shall see Christ working through us for His purposes. If we follow what God asks, which is a very common theme in the Bible, as it is in my sermons, we prosper and do well.

Which brings us to the point of the Gospel, in which Christ heals a woman who has such supreme faith in Christ healing her, that if she but touches his cloak, she knows she will be healed. She did not have any doubts about Christ’s power to heal her. She truly had a solid faith.  She depended not on the talisman of the cloak, but the power of Christ with which she expected to connect. She knew Christ had the power to heal her and believed He would heal her. Christ was impressed by the woman’s faith.  If we had the faith of this woman in Christ, imagine how we could impact the world around us. There would be little we could not do for our fellow men and women.  And, I might ask, what is stopping us?  The ruler whose daughter had died also shared this amazing faith in Christ.  He had zero doubt whatsoever Christ would do these things.

Also, the faithful centurion and the man whose son was sick had this tremendous faith. The faith of all of these, in particular the ruler whose daughter died was truly strong. Christ recognizes this man’s faith and rewards with the girl’s resurrection.  Quite a surprise for those who had just laughed and scorned him, basically telling him “That is impossible, you can’t raise the girl from the dead.”

He proved them wrong.  He gave a very practical demonstration that much is denied men, but though God all things are possible.  But, we need the faith of the woman, the faith of the ruler and the faith of the centurion.  We must follow Him and the plan He laid out for us. We have to be willing to listen and be ready to follow Him.  In time, we shall too have an amazing reward, through our faith and we shall be in a “new birth of freedom” from otherwise certain death. We can do things thought impossible, if we put our trust in Him, as I have aforementioned.

This is what Jesus meant when he said we could move mountains with our faith. If we put our trust and faith in Him, nothing that we need to do is impossible for us to achieve. We must keep listening to His Guidance and to do our best to follow Him.

Works must follow faith however. We cannot have a full faith, unless we act to demonstrate the faith. Faith is demonstrated through our actions, and our Lord set this in His Example for us to follow.

Jesus’s miracles were all about actions, not just in word, but in deed. He did both, as we must also. If we only talk the talk, but do not walk our talk, then our words mean nothing.  If we walk the walk also, our words have weight, meaning, as we become men and women of the Word. I say of the Word and not like the old saying, he is a man of his word. For we want to become a Man/Woman of His Word, not our word! If we go by His Word, we can never go wrong. We always seem to go on our word and that is where we get into trouble. It is action not just diction which counts. The two can go together, but in the end, actions speak louder than words.

Following this theme of words and action as today is Veteran’s Day, I realized God has used godly men for our freedom to be kept, by laying down their lives for ours. No greater love could be found in the world, then those men who died in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War I, the Pacific and the European theatres of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, Desert 1 and 2, Afghanistan and countless dirty little wars where the freedom of our country and that others was threatened.

Through a sense of godliness, these men went to battle on our behalf, as Christ battled Satan on our behalf.  These men did not just go into battle with the godliness, they prayed hard for them, they prayed for each minute just to stay alive, especially in the hellholes of the Pacific and the European theaters.  The danger they faced were far more perilous than the ones we face today.  We overcame the enemy, not only because of our superior tactics, but we had men ready and willing to take the enemy on and do our best to prevail, and who followed God.

The Collect, Epistle and Gospel tie together, laying out, detailing and reinforcing the same message, ultimately.  We have to have faith in Christ and God, and be willing to accept the Holy Ghost into us, that through Him, we may do good works on Earth and that we will receive our just reward for doing what is right in the end.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Amen.

Today is the one hundredth anniversary of the armistice that began the process to end the First World War, at the time being called the Great War or the “War to end all Wars”.   But has history would prove and the wickedness of mankind would prevail, this was only one of many wars in the 20th Century.  Of course, in scope this war and what would be known as the Second World War would eclipse all other conflicts in as far as geographic reach.  There would be a number of conflicts that would be mostly regional in scope and limited to a couple of cultures, but in the same sense, these too would be catastrophic to certain regions of the globe.  Most of these other conflicts would involve the attempt to impose a single government or expression upon a people, using violence, executions, starvation, and other means to get the job done.  Many of these conflicts would be the single-mindedness of a small group or individual imposing their ideals of what a government should look like.  With the exception of the Spanish Civil War, these other conflicts would be the implementation of some form of Socialism / communism / command type of government upon a people.

Beloved, it does not matter what these folks try to do, their will and their way will be overthrown.   In some cases, we will witness this, in others we will not.  As we have seen in the last 100 years, every single socialistic/communistic form of government has failed.  Any that have survived in some form of communism has had to evolve into a quasi-capitalistic form in order to stay in power.  The commune, the ideal of “one for all, all for one”, does not work in the real world.  There will always be those who are over or in control of the masses.  Communism works for ants, bees, and termites. They all work to keep the colony alive. There is a division of labor, you have guard insects, worker insects, nursery insects, and one queen.  Each colony in fact is like a multi-celled creature, all working together to make the colony thrive.  When one tries to apply that concept to humans, things begin to break down.

Now you ask, how does this all relate to our scripture for today?

Let’s look at the last three verses of the selection from Malachi.  In these verses, from chapter 4 we are reading about the destruction of the proud and wicked.  They will be burned up.  What day is this?  This is the day the Lord returns, the wicked and the proud are deemed stubble, that day they will burn up. Nothing will be left of them, even down to the root or any branches.  Over the centuries, when man has tried to subjugate his fellow man with an oppressive form of government, there has been a winnowing out of such governments.  In each case there have been better, more moderate forms of government, mostly based on the Judeo-Christian law system, that bring a more balanced form of governing to a people.  We look at the advancements of Western Civilization, when man has been allowed to flourish and prosper due to the diligence of his own labor, there we find levels of good government.  When the opposite is allowed to grow, only chaos, death, and destruction follow.  All evil will be thrown down, one day.

O

n that day, those who are in the Lord will be protected. They will find healing in the wings of the Sun of righteousness.  “… The saints’ triumphs are all owing to God’s victories; it is not they that do this, but God who does it for them…”*.  For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.  But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.  And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.

Let’s read what Matthew Henry says about this portion of Malachi:

Here is a reference to the first and to the second coming of Christ: God has fixed the day of both. Those who do wickedly, who do not fear God’s anger, shall feel it. It is certainly to be applied to the day of judgment, when Christ shall be revealed in flaming fire; to execute judgment on the proud, and all that do wickedly. In both, Christ is a rejoicing Light to those who serve him faithfully. By the Sun of Righteousness we understand Jesus Christ. Through him believers are justified and sanctified, and so are brought to see light. His influences render the sinner holy, joyful, and fruitful. It is applicable to the graces and comforts of the Holy Spirit, brought into the souls of men. Christ gave the Spirit to those who are his, to shine in their hearts, and to be a Comforter to them, a Sun and a Shield. That day which to the wicked will burn as an oven, will to the righteous be bright as the morning; it is what they wait for, more than those that wait for the morning. Christ came as the Sun, to bring, not only light to a dark world, but health to a distempered world. Souls shall increase in knowledge and spiritual strength.

Behold another day is coming, far more dreadful to all that work wickedness than any which is gone before. How great then the happiness of the believer, when he goes from the darkness and misery of this world, to rejoice in the Lord for evermore!

Overall we must understand the Lord is in control of all. We see chaos, we read of riot, we see depicted on TV the waves of protests and anger, but we must not fear any of this.

The Lord of Peace will have the last word.  Jesus Christ is not created, he is begotten. He and the Father are the great I AM.  The Holy Spirit gives us power to resist the fear that encompasses those who do not know God.   He is the comforter promised by Jesus just before he ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of God the Father.

We see this very power revealed in the final passage for today found in Luke 10:17-24.

A

nd the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.  And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.  Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.  Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.   In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.  All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.  And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:  For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

Again from Matthew Henry:

All our victories over Satan, are obtained by power derived from Jesus Christ, and he must have all the praise. But let us beware of spiritual pride, which has been the destruction of many. Our Lord rejoiced at the prospect of the salvation of many souls. It was fit that particular notice should be taken of that hour of joy; there were few such, for He was a man of sorrows: in that hour in which he saw Satan fall, and heard of the good success of his ministers, in that hour he rejoiced. He has ever resisted the proud, and given grace to the humble. The more simply dependent we are on the teaching, help, and blessing of the Son of God, the more we shall know both of the Father and of the Son; the more blessed we shall be in seeing the glory, and hearing the words of the Divine Saviour; and the more useful we shall be made in promoting his cause.

Let us pray:

O

 ALMIGHTY God, Who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, That they may love the thing which thou commandest, And desire that which thou dost promise; That so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, Our hearts may surely there be fixed, Where true joys are to be found; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

G

RANT to us, Lord, we beseech thee, the spirit to think and do always such things as are right; that we, who cannot do any thing that is good without thee, may by thee be enabled to live according to thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Trinity

This coming Friday will be the fifty fifth anniversary of the founding of our communion by the Most Reverend James Parker Dees. Some time before, he made a decision to leave the Episcopal Church because it had loosed itself from the clear teaching of Scripture and was drifting into apostasy. The Bible tells us that we must contend for the faith (Jude, 3). That means we are to stand up for God’s word written against all else. So it follows that if any church body abandons God’s word, then the true and faithful Christian must find another where God’s word is respected and observed.

The apostle Paul in his second epistle to the Corinthian church (6:17) reminded his listener to, … come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord and touch not the unclean thing and I will receive you. Bishop Dees left the dying body of the Episcopal Church he loved and established the Anglican Orthodox Church precisely because he was honoring the word of God as the apostle had commanded all Christians to do in the face of apostasy. And since that time the AOC has remained an independent Anglican body, upholding those doctrines which are firmly grounded upon the inerrant word of God without compromise and without apology.

And on account of its faithfulness to God’s word, the Anglican Orthodox Church has consistently stood against ecumenism, or the acceptance of all brands of religion regardless of their tenets and doctrines. We recognize it to be one of the devil’s tool which he has used to ensnare the unlearned and the unsuspecting who claim membership in the body of Christ. Ecumenism has put to good use the notion of Political Correctness as a cover for its activities. And why? Because the PC movement is more about silencing criticism, rather than preventing injustice. It is a placebo and not a solution. It has morphed many churches into a perverse form of Christianity via the unbiblical tenets of “everybody is good,” “everybody is saved,” “everybody can learn the basic skills,” (oops, that last one is a piece of Proto-PC educational jargon which is as false as the basic premises of ecumenism, but you get the point).

When one examines the current slate churches that have embraced political correctness, one will find that they advocate what I have termed the three great principles of, “tolerance”, “inclusion” and “peace”. These dovetail nicely for as they are “tolerant,” they are also “inclusive” or better yet, “permissive.” They have exchanged the exclusivity of the Christian faith for a watered down version of the same and all for the sake of unity and numbers. But unity for the sake of unity alone is bad theology. As the prophet Amos once noted, Can two walk together except they be agreed (3:3)? If the believer is yoked to any infidel within the church, the yoke will be unequal. And how can it be otherwise?

Think about it. Tolerance of sinful behaviors will by its very nature open the door to an inclusive understanding of salvation, which then requires that the church member accept the PC church’s understanding of the word “peace.” But such an understanding will cost the true Christian dearly. For if the faithful wish to remain within said church for whatever reason— family, friends, business associates, memories of days gone by and the like— then such a one will be required to accept that body’s twisted understanding of the Bible.

On the other hand, the peace which our Lord gives us is a settled spirit in an Page6of 9

unsettled world. We who have been born again have God’s peace which comes to us via the Holy Ghost the Comforter. The PC church’s peace is a feeling of freedom from the indictment of sin for those who are willfully sinning against the God. But such is not the case for the regenerated soul remaining within a PC church as they are expected to meekly harbor a spirit of acquiescence or acceptance for all that goes on within said church. That is hardly something which would supply comfort as they have likely witnessed all that they believe in— and which has been plainly stated in Scripture— violated and dispensed with by those who are living in opposition to God’s word written. If you think differently, then consider the words of the apostle Peter in his second epistle wherein he wrote that Lot was, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked. (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds (2:7-8).

Another aspect of apostasy within PC churches is theological liberalism which encompasses the denial of Scripture as inerrant truth; a denial of the virgin birth of our Lord; the denial of individual and hierarchal evil in the personage of the Devil and his hosts of fallen spirits; the denial of the existence of hell; as well as the acceptance of any number of sinful behaviors which have been plainly prohibited by Scripture.

These things did not come about overnight, but were introduced gradually so as not to shake the unsuspecting congregants from the comfort of their pews. Only after some of the more controversial elements were introduced did there arise a hue and cry among the faithful. Unfortunately, by that time the process of change had so metastasized that there was little hope of recovering that which was lost. It was gone, having mutated into another belief system that followed after another gospel and worshiped another Christ (see Galatians 1:6-9.

As a result, the acceptance of said heretical beliefs and practices by many modern episcopal bodies has gone hand in hand with their relegation of the Anglican Articles of Religion to mere footnote status. The Thirty-nine Articles had long kept the Anglican Church and its various subdivisions in doctrinal purity. However, once these were abandoned, said churches were then loosed from their ecclesiastical moorings and have ever since been tossed to and fro by every wind of false doctrine and every evil way.

And last but certainly not least, these churches have dropped their use of the King James Bible as their source of truth which is something our communion has not done and for good reason. The Authorized Version of Scripture is a trusted translation which has stood the test of time. For many generations, countless believers have relied on it for comfort and for edification in their Christian walk. It is the word of God written in a very elegant and reverent form of the English language. If you use the other versions and compare them with the King James Version, you will find that they will have missing words, missing phrases and missing passages. It is welled documented the NIV (which has become the most popular of the new versions) has some 64,000 plus words less than the Authorized Version.

I have often heard the comment that the Authorized Version is an incomplete translation, or it is not “up-to-date” or it is hard to understand. Well, let’s consider a few points for clarity. The King James Version is based on the Textus Receptus: a Greek text of New Testament which was developed in the 16th century from a host of Byzantine manuscripts and fragments while the new versions are largely based on two Alexandrian texts that were the likely products of Origen, a noted Christian heretic from the Third century AD or several of his associates. These were later collated by two apostate Anglican scholars Hort and Westcott who used them to develop their own Greek text from which the Revised Version of the Bible was created in 1881. Their corrupted Greek text has become the base for all of the new versions thanks to the work of modern scholarship. Now, why on earth would you accept a bible that has a base text developed by one heretic and formulated into another by two more? Such is a good example of spreading bad seed and the master of deception is behind it.

Bishop Dees set out to found an episcopal body that would remain faithful to God’s word written. He sought to educate young men in the fundamentals of sound doctrine and worship so that they too would be faithful ministers. He might be compared to the noble Epaphras of Colosse (Colossians 1:7-8) in that he was a learned and faithful minister of Christ and well-grounded in the knowledge of the Scriptures. When he witnessed the error of the Episcopal Church, he raised his voice in favor of the truth of God’s word written, even when it was not popular to do so. And he was an able leader of our communion as he set up a worldwide ministry which continues to this day.

So when the naysayers criticize us for being too small, or for meeting in private homes, or because our ministers do not wear superfluous ornaments and vestments[3], or because we hold to the foundational doctrines of Anglican Christianity via our use of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer and the King James Bible; we simply answer thus: that we are remaining faithful to our Lord’s commands and will not compromise them for whatever plum the devil and his earthly puppets might dangle before us. Bishop Dees resisted such in 1963, and we are obliged to do likewise. As we remember his sacrifices and his trials, let us vow to keep our church firmly grounded on the Rock of Christ and his word written. May it please our heavenly Father to assist us in this quest as we continue to hold fast to the sound doctrines which we have been given till he comes again.

Let us pray:

D

ear LORD, who art the author of all sound doctrine; guide this our Anglican Orthodox Church into all truth; fill our ministers and members with thy most holy Spirit; that through our witness, we will bear fruit in thy name; for this we ask in the name of him who gave us the Great Commission, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week, Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Veterans Day

O

LORD God of Hosts, stretch forth, we pray thee, thine almighty arm to strengthen and protect the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, coastguardsmen and contractors of our country. Support them in the day of battle, and in the time of peace keep them safe from all evil; endue them with courage and loyalty; and grant that in all things they may serve without reproach.  We give you thanks for those who serve, for those who have served and their families who pay the price of that service to keep our country free; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

[1] The centurion at Capernaum whose servant is ill:  Matthew Chapter 8 verses 5 to 13:

And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

See how this story matches that of the woman:

  • His servant was sick;
  • He knew Christ could help;
  • He was prepared to ask Christ for help;
  • He knew that Christ was in a position of power;
  • He didn’t even have to be near the servant to help

The centurion wasn’t someone who went to get a doctor, or an itinerant herbalist. He went seeking a miracle, and that is what his faith got him.  This centurion had faith, greater faith than Christ had ever found. Yet who was he? He wasn’t a scribe or Hebrew scholar. He wasn’t a member of the local synagogue. He was a member of the hated, oppressing, occupying army.

[2] The American Civil War was fought not over slavery, but over States Rights.  Make no mistake, the right being disputed at the time was slavery.  Many will say the wrong side won, including the noted thinker Thomas Sowell.  Slavery was an institution whose time was long passed, it did not serve anyone, master or slave.  It was counter to the Word and should never have existed here.  Truly it was an instrument of the Devil and was used to harm our country.

[3] I only ask you point to one instance in Scripture where Jesus asks us to do otherwise.  He never wore fancy dress, extorted money to build a Crystal Cathedral or suggested when two or three thousand are gathered in my name…
