Sunday Report
Today is Whitsunday, also known as Pentecost.
Pentecost which is commonly called Whitsunday and the time of Whitsuntide
The octave (8 days) following Whitsunday. In the Book of Common Prayer, the Monday and Tuesday after Whitsunday are Red Letter days, so called because days provided with a proper Collect (prayer), Epistle, and Gospel were marked in the calendar in red ink. “Whitsuntide” (formerly also spelled “Whitsontide”) or “Whitsun Week” is derived from Middle English whitsonday, from Old English hwita sunnandæg, “White Sunday”, in reference to the white ceremonial robes formerly worn on this day.
Whitsunday marks the Feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles on the 50th day after Easter. It ranks, after Easter, as the second festival of the Church. In the West, the Vigil of Pentecost soon became a secondary date for baptisms, with a ceremony resembling the Paschal Vigil Service. (Pentecost is the Greek name for the Jewish Feast of Weeks, which falls on the 50th day after Passover.) As the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles on this day (Acts 2:1), the name was applied to the Christian feast celebrating this event, popularly called “Whitsunday”.
On Point
Someone asked, where do the quotes come from? The answer is from the people who uttered them. But, how did you find them? Oh, that. Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan. He always has some great ones to share. On to the On Point quotes –
Good & evil increase at compound interest. The decisions you & I make everyday are of infinite importance.

Work
If you don’t want to work you have to work to earn enough money so that you won’t have to work.
Frederic Ogden Nash
(1902 – 1971)
We have no reason to be discouraged and cast down if the religion we profess is not popular and few agree with us. We must remember the words of our Lord Jesus Christ: ‘The gate is narrow’. Repentance, and faith in Christ, and holiness of life, have never been fashionable. The true flock of Christ has always been small. It must not move us to find that we are reckoned singular, and peculiar, and bigoted, and narrow minded. This is the ‘narrow way’. Surely it is better to enter into eternal life with a few—than to go to Hell with a great company.

The Bible tells us that both Sodom and Egypt were pleasant places for the unregenerate as compared with the idea of trekking out into the wilderness to commune with God. Still, a wilderness where God is will be far and away more preferable for those who are born-again than to remain in the modern versions of Sodom or Egypt.

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.
The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.
The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off. Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.
The Propers for today are found on Page 180-182, with the Collect first:

GOD, who as at this time didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people, by sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit; Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Scripture serving as this morning’s Epistle came from the Second Chapter of the Acts of the Apostles beginning at the First Verse, which consisted primarily of a listing of all the countries and regions surrounding Jerusalem, or at least the hardest to pronounce ones, and a description of the actions of the Apostles when the Holy Ghost came upon them. But, you will also notice that the coming of the Holy Ghost demonstrated the universality of The Word, for when they spoke in tongues, The Word spoke to each in their own language. The Word was not some stranger’s language, but their very own!

HEN the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilæans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judæa, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
Today’s Gospel came from the Fourteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the Fifteenth Verse:

ESUS said unto his disciples, If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words; and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do.

Whitsunday is the seventh Sunday after Easter and coincides with the Jewish Day of Pentecost. Pentecost followed fifty days after Passover. As Christ is OUR Passover, we observe WhitSunday as our day of Pentecost. Pentecost was the day of the giving of another Teach – the Law – to Moses on Mt Sinai. So Whitsunday is for us the Day of the giving of another Teacher to us which is the Spirit of Love and Truth. 24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. (Gal 3:24-29)
Our prayer of Collect today makes reference to the Holy Spirit as a Light and a Teacher. It is the same Light and Teacher which Christ was to us in His earthly ministry. It is the same because it is not in God’s nature to to present us with contradictory teachings. All that the Holy spirit reveals to us is simply that which Jesus Christ has also revealed so clearly in His Word. The ministry of Christ was limited to the physical grounds of Judea, Samaria, Galilee and the adjacent environs. However, Christ promised to send to us an encourager and a Comforter to be with us always and to open our eyes to the deep mysteries of God as revealed BY and IN His Word

I will address primarily the Epistle and Gospel texts in today’s sermon.
The floodgates of Gospel graces were opened on the Day of Pentecost fifty days following the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ made every provision for His people in His Birth, Life, Testimony, Suffering and Death, Burial, Resurrection and Ascension.

HEN said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost. (John 20:21-22)
It is is well and good the Coming of the Holy Ghost was concurrent with the beginning of the Gospel Age. The prophecies of Isaiah of the coming Messiah were clear that God would no longer be veiled from us as the Most Holy was in the Temple. He would ABIDE with His people at the fulfillment of the prophecy: Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) “. . . . which being interpreted is, God with us. (Matt 1:23-24) Christ, being God in a body of flesh, was with us until the ascension. But the Holy Ghost, being the Third Person of the Godhead, has been with us ever since in His powerful presence. He brings Love, Hope, and Liberty. “The Spirit of God first imparts Love; He next inspires Hope, and then gives Liberty; and that is about the last thing we have in many of our churches.” D.L. Moody. Christ is ever with us by the presence of the Holy Ghost.
The Holy Ghost comes bearing heavenly gifts. Thomas Aquinas categorized these gifts from the study of Isaiah 11:2-3 thusly:
- Wisdom,
- Understanding,
3 Counsel,
- Fortitude,
- Knowledge,
- Piety,
- Fear of the Lord.
The Holy Ghost will not speak a new or different Gospel, but opens our hearts and minds to the Gospel already preached – and lived – by our Lord Jesus Christ. You will remember that Christ did not preach a Gospel message that varied from that of His Father. When Philip inquired of Jesus to be shown the Father, Jesus responded: 9 Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? 10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. (John 14:9-10) Jesus did not bring an INDIVIDUAL message, but that message dictated by the One, Triune God which includes the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
Now our Lord has sent to His people the Holy Spirit as a Comforter to open our eyes in the teaching of all that those teachings of the Father which Christ taught, and now which the Holy Ghost teaches.. The Holy Ghost is the Compass and Light of God for our hearts. The Holy Ghost does not speak of Himself, but of all that Christ taught us. We have been promised a Presence of God to be always with us.
One of the names of our Lord is Immanuel which means “God with us.” (Immanuel in Isaiah 7:14) But in fulfillment of the promises and mighty works of God, our Lord must have returned to the Father when His works of salvation were completed. So He promised to send us another Comforter whose spiritual & physical jurisdiction would know no geographical limits. That Comforter is the Holy Ghost. And Christ is with us in His presence.
The Holy Ghost is a Spirit and is therefore unrestricted in either time or space. It is for this reason that Christ told his disciples: “These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:25-26, see also 15:26-27) Herein we have a glimpseof the Personality of the Holy Ghost. He will not speak of himself, but will teach us all things and bring into remembrance those things we have read and studied from the Word (which is Christ written). The Spirit will remind us of nothing we will not find in the Holy Bible.
The Old Testament was filled with Law and Prophecies. These were given by inspiration of the Holy Spirit; however, the Holy Spirit was limited in its efficacy to the general believers until Christ had fulfilled all things.
Recall the words of our Lord to the Woman at the well: Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. We have many churches well informed of the Law and the Prophets, who wholly missing the Spirit of Love granted by the Holy ghost. Those two must be intertwined.

ND when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. (Acts 2:1-11)
Whatever they expected could not be explained, but they knew now that whatsoever Christ had said, bore deep and abiding truth in it for them.
If someone had asked, “For what purpose do you wait here this day?” they would not have reason to give except that the Lord has told us to await this day. When they had gathered for the Last Supper with Jesus, there was a calm serenity that pervaded the room, but today, there was even a touch of disorderly confusion. There were men there from all over the known world. They had come to know of Christ and were, too, His disciples. But they all spoke in different languages that caused the gathering to appear almost chaotic as each chatted to his fellow countryman in a language which most others could not understand. So there was a continual buzz of confusion. Yet, they waited. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
It should be noted that, in spite of many varying personalities, all were gathered in One Accord. Their minds were at One withChrist, and therefore with each other. Though they were confused by a lack of understanding of each other’s language, yet they agreed in truth. The Holy Spirit of God will not abide division. When the Church does not await and listen for the Voice of the Holy Spirit, He will not come. He waits without.
Suddenly, as they waited, there came a strange and peculiar sound from Heaven. It sounded very much like a mighty Wind – and it was! It was the Wind of God in the form of the Holy Ghost. The coming of the Holy Ghost was not in any sense partial or piecemeal – it filled the entire Upper Room. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. It should also be noted that when God is working, men are at rest. These men were seated awaiting the Bread and Manna of Heaven just as the 5,000 seated on the mountain slope overlooking the Galilean Sea when Christ miraculously fed them an abundance from a pittance of provision.
There may have even been some dismay and fearful expectation as the Holy Ghost descended. When Christ walks by our side on our Road to Emmaus, we often do not recognize Him. We may even be fearful of His presence as was the disciples that stormy night on the Sea when they saw Christ walking on the waters.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. These cloven tongues were not actual fire but appeared like fire over their heads. It was an intense and beautiful moment. Their hearts could no longer sit in silence, and they overflowed with the love of God and His truth. The experience was profound and defied description.
What was the result of this sudden outburst of the Holy Ghost?
Herein lies the miracle of tongues as expressed on the Day of Pentecost: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Not only did all speak in other tongues, but, miraculously, they could ALL understand each other. At first, these men were confused at a lack of understanding. Now, they are confused at the miraculous GIFT of understanding. It was the reverse of confusion and misunderstanding that occurred at the Tower of Babel. These men were not `babbling’ (derivative term from the name Babel) but were speaking in a language that ALL understood in his own tongue. This was an Apostolic gift that was given for the benefit of the early church and the broad propagation of the Gospel over the known world. Would we not immediately recognize such an experience to be a miracle in our own times? Any lost sinner can stand up and utter ridiculous babblings among the congregation, but how can you say `AMEN’ to that which has no meaning? God is not the Author of confusion: For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. (1 Cor 14:33)
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. Now this is evidence of the miraculous power of God, is it not? If someone stands speaking in a babbling tongue that no one understands, where is the proof of the miraculous power of God? Paul tells us: O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. (1 Tim 6:20-21) and later, he says: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness (2 Tim 2:15-16)
Friends, despite the yeoman efforts some false professors make to deceive us on tongues, nothing could be clearer in God’s Word than this admonition against confusion.
Please observe how wonderfully was this legitimate employment of the miracle of tongues received by the believers: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness (2 Tim 2:15-16)
I once read from the memoirs of the martyred John Stam who was beheaded by the Chinese Communist for his faith and preaching of Christ: A minister of some renown was invited to speak at the Chinese church. He was on his first visit to China and knew not a single word of Chinese language. When he arose, he began speaking in so-called tongues. It did not seem like any language at all to most of the listeners, but only confused their understanding. Suddenly, an old Chinese elder of the church arose and stormed out of the church. One of Stam’s co-workers chased out after the faithful old elder to determine his angst. The old Chinaman responded, “That man was cursing God in the Chinese language.” Such babblings are truly influenced by a spirit, but certainly not the Holy Spirit.
Let me encourage every one of us here today to adhere to the known and revealed truth of God as attested by the Holy Ghost. He will not add to God’s Word, or detract therefrom, but will open up to our hearts and souls the mysteries revealed in the Word of all that Jesus taught us. And suddenly there came a sound from Heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost. (Acts 2:2-4. (and what is the confusion of babbling if not adding to the plain and clearly stated Word of God)?
Sermon – Reverend Hap Arnold – Time and Action
Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California
Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.
Once again, today’s propers come together very well, their focus is narrow, thus powerful.
Consider these words from the Collect:
… sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit; Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort …
When Jesus left on Ascension Day, we lost a teacher here on earth. We still have Him in our memories as Redeemer and Savior; but what to do for understanding and that needed closeness to God? In response to His departure, God sent us the Holy Ghost.
Who is this Holy Ghost and why is he here?
We worship the One True God, a triune God, that is Three in One; Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Most people have no trouble understanding the concept of God the Father, Christians seem to get God the Son, but many seem to have a difficulty with the Holy Ghost, the Third God Guy.
The Holy Ghost has been there since the beginning. He breathed life into the world, yet His actions seemed to be sporadic until Pentecost.
Well, today is Pentecost, the time one normally thinks of the Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit, the Breath of God, the Comforter. When people do think of Him, they oft think of the actions described in the words of Saint Luke in the Acts of the Apostles. The dancing and speaking in tongues. All that happened so we might understand with the help of the Holy Ghost we might bring the Word to all mankind. The Word of God is a universal language. When the disciples spoke in tongues, the people around them heard the Word in their own language, not an odd combination of sounds that no one understood. The disciples spoke and were heard by those around them in their own language, not Klingon. It is not for us to speak in tongues without study; that was a one shot deal. It was designed to show us we could and should with hard work and persistence bring the Gospel to the world in the language of the people. It showed we were in fact to preach the Gospel to all nations, not just the nation of Israel, but to all the nations of the World. The many nations of the fallen race of Adam comprise those to whom the Good News is to be spread. Which is why God sent the Holy Ghost; so we would understand it is for us to bring the light of Christ into the world for all to see and believe upon. He is here so we can understand and then act upon His Word. He is here to provide us with the guidance and understanding necessary to preach and spread the Word into the far regions of the Earth. The Holy Ghost allows us to spread His Word amongst all the people in the world to give them the knowledge that they might open their heart to the Holy Ghost and believe. He opens our eyes to what is good for us and what is not good for us, so that we know what to believe and what not to believe.
We need the Holy Ghost if we are to follow Christ’s Great Commission. He knew we would need the Holy Ghost if we were to have any success in this endeavor. However, He also knew He needed to leave if the Holy Ghost were to come and stay, so the Holy Ghost’s coming had to wait until after the Ascension. He had it planned out so the disciples would not be without a direct connection to Him for very long.
The Holy Ghost also helps us to give the “righteous judgment” the Collect speaks of. This judgment is not the same as God’s final judgment on our performance, but it is a judgment based on Scriptural values, with the Holy Ghost’s help, we can make on our lives and others lives, based on how we see it through the lens of the Holy Ghost and Scripture. It is not to insult people, but to be truthful from the standpoint of Scriptures and be able to say certain behaviors do not line up with Scripture, i.e. homosexuality and abortion. To say those behaviors are not Christian is a righteous judgment statement the Holy Ghost helps us determine.
The Holy Ghost is also our direct connection to God. When Jesus left, the disciples were distant from God. When they were not near Jesus, they did not do as well as when they were with Him. As with the righteous judgement, the Holy Ghost helps us to align our actions and views with that of Scripture. The Holy Ghost helps us to properly understand and apply Scriptural principles in our own lives. Note Peter’s actions after the arrest of Jesus for an example, thrice denying His Lord. The Holy Ghost came so we would have understanding and a direct connection to God, wireless as it were, instead of having to be tethered to Christ. This is how He can always be with us, even though He is not physically with us at the present time. We will never have to fear anything as long as He is with us, for if He is with us, who should we be afraid of, if we are on His side?
If we allow the Holy Ghost into our hearts, we will never be far from Him, and He will never be far from us. We have to consciously let Him into our hearts, He will not come uninvited into our hearts. The Holy Ghost helps us understand Scripture and gives us guidance on our earthly lives, as we work towards staying on the straight and narrow path towards heaven He will be a constant guiding presence in our lives, that will give us peace in times of trouble, and will help us guide and focus our minds in our worship of God. He will give us inspiration and help us to do what is right for our fellow Christians and friends, while staying true to God. He will light our paths in difficult times and trials and will give us the guidance we need to finish our race for God.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that He would be leaving, but the Father would send a facilitator; one who whose presence, if we let Him into our hearts, would bring understanding of His Word into those self-same hearts. The Comforter would bring the Love of God into our hearts to let us feel His Love. He will help us understand we are striving to be one with God, with Jesus and with the Holy Ghost. Our love is demonstrated by our actions. Jesus points out those who do not truly love Him will not keep His Commandments. However, if we truly do love him, we must act for Him and by doing so will keep his commandments. This is only possible if we allow the Holy Ghost into our hearts then believe and ACT upon our faith! This is a point made time and time again in Scriptures. We need to be doers of the world, not just hearers, to paraphrase Saint James. For if we love Jesus, we cannot do otherwise than He asked.
If you think about it, you will recall the second half of the Book of Luke is titled The Acts of the Apostles. It is not the thoughts, the beliefs, the feelings, the meditations, the inner feelings or any other touchy feely thing, it is the ACTS. If you believe, you must act on those beliefs. The Holy Ghost is here to help us know how to act, we will just have to let Him into our hearts, and then ACT.
We need the help of the Holy Ghost to learn what we are to do, how we are to do it and most of all to do it. Action, not just diction.
Pray for His continual presence in your heart.
Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail. The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.
The time is now, not tomorrow. The time has come, indeed. How will you ACT?
It is by our actions we are known.

Amen.

nd it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. 30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come. 32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call. (Joel 2:28-32)
This brief passage from the minor prophet Joel is one of the most direct foreshadowing accounts to the Day of Pentecost.
The first two verses speak to the universal outpouring of the Holy Spirit, ‘…I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh…’ This is different from the multiply encounters with the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. In that testimony we read where individual or a times small groups were indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Aaron, Moses, Miriam, the prophets who walked with Elijah, etc.
But on the whole, generally there was not a universal infusing or outpouring the Spirit on a general population. That is until we come to the account described in the book of Acts. The most compelling part of this scripture; this outpouring of the Holy Spirit will no longer be ethnic in nature. It will be universal, as in the catholic church, (universal church).
Here we have the faithful as they wait in Jerusalem, as instructed by the ascended Christ, suddenly ‘baptized’ by the Holy Spirit. This event, now known as the Day of Pentecost was unprecedented as revealed by the remarks made by those who observed the event. Many who were baptized by the Holy Spirit that day were converts to Judaism, they were Gentile, not Jews by birth.
There were others who observed what was happening, who had not experienced the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, who would accused the believer of being drunk. Peter denies that accusation by indicating the early hour of the day, …it is the 3rd hour… (9 am)
Another interesting fact, the outpouring was not gender specific. Men and women, sons and daughters, old and young…they all ‘…in those days…’ will have the Spirit poured out upon them.
Verses 30 &31 seem to be out of chronological order. These two verses can be interpreted as to being about Christ recent crucifixion. There were a number of heavenly signs observed, there was an earthquake noted on the day of Christ death. The sky was dark for three hours. The blood and water refer to His piercing after His death, where blood and water flowed from his side. There was an eclipse that Friday, it was a “blood” moon, orange/red in color as observed as the eclipse occurred shortly after the moon rose.
Verse 32 explains clearly the plan of salvation …whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be delivered. And to finish off the thought ...and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call…
Let us now look at the passage of scripture from the letter to the Romans.
T |
HERE is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. (Romans 8:1-11)
In these eleven verses we find how to know if someone is in Christ. The very nature of the flesh will be changed if you are in Christ. The Spirit, (now poured out on all believers) is a witness to our sinful nature in the law and will show righteousness of the law being fulfilled in us…how?, by not walking after the flesh, but by walking after the Spirit. We are to be spiritually minded, it is life and peace.
Being carnal minded puts us against God, by being in the flesh, that is carnally minded we cannot please God. But if you are not carnally minded, because you are in the Spirit, your body should be dead because of sin. But the Spirit is life, the very same Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead, he will quicken you by his Spirit…that dwells in you.
Paul, in writing this ‘list’ of what to look for in believers and non-believers, gives us a way to examine our spiritual lives in light of the Gospel message. This was after the fact of Pentecost, so the Holy Spirit is now upon all believers, not just the believing Jews. Peter will be the first to record this when he witnesses Cornelius and other gentiles receiving the Holy Spirit.
Paul reaffirms this concept in this passage from 8th chapter of Romans. Here Paul is writing to Roman, Greek, and other gentile believers, instructing them in the understanding of what has happened, first in Jerusalem and then the rest of the known world.
By this accounting modern day believers comfort in Paul’s words as he expresses the real difference between the Old and New Testament. If you spend time reading and rereading these first eleven verses of chapter 8 of Romans you can find comfort in the finished work of the Lord. Jesus died once and for all on the Cross, to raise us from our dead selves to new life. He causes us by the Holy Spirit to seek him, we should desire the Word, we should read the Word, we should live the Word; Daily.
Let us pray:
O GOD, who as at this time didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people, by sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit; Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.
O LORD Jesus Christ, who saidst unto thine Apostles, Peace I leave with you , my peace I give unto you; Regard not our sins, but the faith of thy Church; and grant to it that peace and unity which is according to thy will, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon
We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon. If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth. This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.
Whitsunday
Today we celebrate the coming of the Holy Ghost upon the disciples of our Lord. Our church calendar commemorates this solemn and extraordinary event which is also referred to as Whitsunday, or Whitsuntide for the first three days of the week on which Pentecost falls during the year. The name Whitsunday comes to us from the Old English word for the color white. This was on account of the white robes which were worn by recently baptized persons. Pentecost was and remains a Jewish festival which falls fifty days after Passover and memorializes our LORD’s giving of the Law to Moses. For Christians, it is the birthday of the church when God gave the gift of his Spirit to the apostles. Ever after, the Holy Spirit of God would come to all who have truly accepted Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.
Now let us consider the details of that event. Prior to his ascension, our Lord instructed the disciples not to depart from Jerusalem until they had received the Holy Ghost (Acts 1:4-8). And as they observed the ascension of our Lord, they were also informed by the angels present (Acts 1:11) that as the Lord Jesus had so ascended into heaven, in like manner he would return. It was this event which further affirmed in their minds that Jesus is of God and that all that he had taught them would eventually come to pass. Their eyewitness testimony and their willingness to die rather than to deny that witness is an integral part of the Christian ethos as noted in the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds. And no one who bears the name of Christ can be his while at the same time denying his ascension into heaven as the apostles so witnessed, and which has been recorded within the pages of the Bible.
After the ascension, the apostles returned to Jerusalem with great joy and were found continually in the temple praising and blessing God (Luke 24:52-53). They gathered themselves together with other believers and were in prayer and supplication. They also at the urging of the Holy Spirit, selected another disciple from among the brethren who was named Matthias.
Ten days later, on the Feast of Pentecost, God sent to them the Holy Ghost as Christ had promised. The Spirit of God came to them with a rushing wind as in Genesis 1:2 and was then followed by the cloven tongues as of fire that sat upon each of the disciples. As the Rev. Matthew Henry once observed, “These tongues were cloven (divided) to signify that God would divide unto all nations the knowledge of his grace. The tongues were divided, yet they (the disciples) still continued all of one accord, for there may be a sincere unity of affections where yet there is a diversity of expression.” They were, after all, preaching the same message just in different languages.
Across the globe, there are myriads of Christians who make up the body of Christ. They may speak different languages and have differing orders of worship, but if they are in Christ, they will possess the Holy Spirit of God. They will thus honor and adore the Godhead through their reverent worship, teaching, preaching and living of his word and commandment. And such will be plainly visible to any fellow Christian. While our worship may differ from those of the other denominations of the Christian faith; nevertheless, if we are all holding to the essentials of the faith, we are brothers and sisters in Christ, eternally linked to him and to one another by the indwelling of the Holy Ghost.
Back in Genesis 11:1-9, the LORD broke the ethnic and linguistic unity of mankind in order to restrain the operations of evil in the world. While in Acts 2:1- 11, he began the process of reunifying mankind under the auspices of the Holy Ghost. Through the third person of the Trinity, he would build a spiritual unity amongst the various peoples, kindreds and tongues who not being able to identify with others different from themselves apart from the Holy Spirit, might have that unity by means of God’s Spirit in Jesus Christ. For after the Holy Ghost had come upon the disciples, they spoke in the languages of the multitude of visitors who had come to Jerusalem for the Feast of Pentecost. Luke noted in Acts 2:5, there were in Jerusalem devout Jews from every corner of the known world and they each heard the gospel in their own language. This miraculous act demonstrated God’s power to proclaim to all the world beginning first in Jerusalem his offering of salvation (Luke 24:47). God ‘s word cannot be restrained neither can it be rendered unfruitful. God’s plan and purpose has been to redeem that which was lost, and the gift of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost was an important milestone in that regard.
Now consider what it means to receive God’s gift of his Spirit. First of all, we are regenerated— born again— by his power in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are thus made alive in Christ and have died to this world system (Ephesians 2:1-10). If such does not happen— if we do not die to the things of this world— then those desires for the inordinate things in this life— the lures of the world, the flesh and the devil— will draw us back into a life of sin and degradation. Our Lord said, No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other… (Matthew 6:24). We have to choose whom we will serve. If we are born again then we will choose to keep to the strait gate and the narrow way of Christ. If not, then we will fall prey to the evil one.
Secondly, we have received an anointing by God via the Holy Ghost who has sealed us (I John 2:20-27). Matthew Henry once noted concerning this passage that, “True Christians are anointed ones and are anointed with oil of grace, with gifts and spiritual endowments by the Spirit of grace. The Holy Spirit is compared to oil as well as to fire and water. .. The effects of this unction [anointing] is a spiritual eye-salve. It enlightens and strengthens the eyes of the understanding. Thereby you know all things concerning Christ and his religion.” And so, by this anointing we have grace sufficient to do those things which
God has called on us to do. Via our anointing, we have become soldiers in his army and workers in his harvest. We have not been anointed to live a life of indolence— to be as sloths— hanging about waiting for some opportune moment to partake of the benefits of God’s grace. We have been anointed to be like the diligent sower, the vigilant watchman, the persistent prayer warrior, and the faithful steward. We have been anointed to ACT, as Rev Jack Arnold reminds us in his church’s weekly newsletter.
Thirdly, as we have received the baptism of the Holy Ghost we ought to keep in mind that it was not a work of ourselves, or of men, but of God. In Acts 2:17, Peter recounted what the LORD had said through the prophet Joel (2:28- 29), I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh. While we are commanded to observe the sacrament of Holy Baptism, it is after all God who furnishes his Spirit, not at our behest, but in accord with his will and purpose. While men and women may undergo water baptism, if their hearts are not right with God, then nothing will come of their efforts. We only receive that one true baptism if we truly believe and accept God’s offering of salvation via his only begotten Son’s atoning work on our behalf. Think of all those who have submitted to this sacrament or ordinance who did so not to please God, but to receive the praise of men. If we would truly receive the gift of the Holy Spirit of God, then we must have a heart dedicated to obedience to Christ.
And lastly, the Holy Ghost guides us into all truth (John 16:13); empowers our witness (Micah 3:8); and sanctifies us in our walk and work (II Thessalonians 2:13-14). You cannot please God except by living in accordance with his word and commandment. And you will not get, as it were, to “square-one” with the Godhead apart from the divine assistance of the Holy Ghost.
At Pentecost, the church received the gift of the Holy Ghost. It is a gift of inestimable value and one that is confined solely to those who possess a true and lively faith in Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord. If we are truly of the faith, then the Holy Ghost will empower our witness and our lives in God’s service. May God so fill each of us today.
Let us pray,
F |
ATHER, we pray that thou wouldst fill us with thy most holy Spirit as you did the apostles of old; that we might ever proclaim the good news of salvation to those who are as yet mired in sin; that they too might come to believe on Christ Jesus as their Saviour, and be numbered with thy saints in glory; for this we ask in that name which is above every name, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Have a blessed week, Bryan+
People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.
The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.
Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?
No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.
What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.
How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.
What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.
Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!
Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.
Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

For Our Country
Our country has lost its way. Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take. Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them. Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God. Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down. Down, into the depths of the pit. Pray people will recognize there is:
- One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
- All religions are not equal;
- All ways of life are not equal;
- The Bible holds the Key to Life;
- All rights come from God, not the State;
- Good;
- Bad;
- Evil;
- Right;
- Wrong;
- Allah is the Devil;
- Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.
Pray this recognition will not come too late. Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.
Persecuted
Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India. Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy. Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.
