On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard.  It is quite interesting the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States.  Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church.  Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of the nation.

The Propers for today are found on Page 246-247, with the Collect first:

The text serving as the Epistle for today comes from Acts of the Apostles, the Eleventh Chapter, beginning at the Twenty-Seventh Verse:

I

N these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Cæsar. Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judæa: which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul. Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also.

Here endeth the Epistle

This morning’s Gospel comes from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, the Twentieth Chapter beginning at the Twentieth Verse:

T

HEN came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

James the son of Zebedee and his brother John were among the twelve disciples of Our Lord. They, together with Peter, were privileged to behold the Transfiguration (Matt 17:1), to witness the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law and the raising of the daughter of Jairus, and to be called aside to watch and pray with Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane on the night before His death (Mark 3:17).

James and John were apparently from a higher social level than the average fisherman. Jesus nicknamed the two brothers Sons of Thunder, perhaps meaning they were headstrong, hot-tempered, and impulsive; and so they seem to be in two incidents reported in the Gospels. On one occasion, Jesus and the disciples were refused the hospitality of a Samaritan village, and James and John proposed to call down fire from heaven on the offenders. On another occasion, their mother asked Jesus for a special place of honor in the Kingdom, and were told that the place of honor is the place of suffering.

Finally, about AD 42, shortly before Passover (Acts 12), James was beheaded by order of King Herod Agrippa I – the first Apostle to be martyred. (Acts 12:2)

After his death his body was taken to Spain and buried at Compostela, a town the name of which is commonly thought to be derived from the word “place of the apostle” .

The Spaniards fighting to drive their Moorish conquerors out of Spain took “Santiago de Compostela!” as one of their chief war-cries.

So James is one of the two (James & John) whose mother requested a special place for them by the side of Christ.

We read the account of this beginning in the first verse of our text (v20):

Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.  21. And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.

Mothers are ever seeking to gain advantage for their sons and daughters and are willing to circumvent conventional propriety in the effort. She had perhaps already told James and John to have the nerve to ask the Lord themselves. They would have refused to avoid the embarrassment of asking a special favor.

But her petition forced them to come to the issue.

There is an old adage which says “Be careful what you ask for!”

Most of the great petitions of life begin with the all-important “Me!”  when they should begin with a concern for the greater good of others. That is the Christ-like principle.

I hold in my hands a sea-farers telescope. Its purpose was to search the ocean horizon for other ships, for land and lighthouses, and every possible sign that would enlighten the captain of his course in confirmation of his compass reading.  The proper use of the telescope is to look through the small (me) end. That way, the search view will be brought close. When we go before God in prayer, we must do so understanding our smallness, and His Face will be magnified.

The young lass, Mary, speaks in the first line of the Magnificat (Luke 1:46)…My soul doth magnify the Lord!

When we start with an understanding of our insignificant smallness, we will come to terms with the infinite greatness of the Lord.

Suppose I look into the telescope from the large end? The object viewed will appear very far away and small.  If I begin with my over-estimation of my own importance, and size, God will appear uncharacteristically small and far away.

The proper concept is to know that we are without any merit or power whatsoever apart from His Love and Grace. That is the proper perspective. So, when we look through a telescope at God, we view Him through the small (me) end.

Jesus never neglected even a wrong request as a moment to teach and enlighten. His response……

Y

E know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

When we drink of the Cup in Communion, we are signifying that we share this same Cup with Christ. For this reason, we use a single cup – not many.

A lesson here is to avoid unwise claims. ‘Sure, I can do it, Lord. Just give me the chance!’

How did the two respond? They say unto him, We are able.

Christ does not condemn their ambition for it is an ambition for character and not possession. To love to be near Christ is akin to loving to be ‘like’ Christ.

Please, before you make a boasting claim, be sure to know what you are talking about. These two had no idea that all the apostles would be murdered except one. They would all undergo torture, isolation and death. ….a kind of death beyond their imaginations. Christ would be cruelly murdered on the cross – but this they did not realize at their moment of foolish request.

Jesus responded: Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with.  His baptism was a red one – of blood shed on the cross.     Jesus continued: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

Though many pleadings were made to Christ for healing and for restoration, He nonetheless answered them all straight forwardly and healed them. But this request is one that is completely dependent upon the Providence of God the Father. And it begins with self!

This prayer was not granted. Why not? The Apostle James answers the question himself in James 4:3 – Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

Our roles and callings have already been established in the will of the Father long before the world was created. This is settled law.

Every single citizen of the heavenly Jerusalem has his place prepared for him, not only for what, but by what he is.

The nearest to Christ in His glory will be those who are nearest Him in action and character.  How like Christ are you in action and in word and thought?

Are you able to drink from the same Cup.  Are you made worthy by His Holy Spirit testifying in your heart, and your hearing it?

How did the other disciples respond to the request of the mother of James and John, and of the two men themselves? 24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.

Should we really be jealous of others for wanting to sit next to Christ, to be near Him, to be LIKE Him? Religious jealousy is the worst kind and most destructive, because it reflects a sinister side of the soul.

How should we view the sense of privilege with Christ?      What does Christ tell us?

Y

E know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. 26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; 27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: 28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

How many modern day ‘wonders of the pulpit’ would humble themselves if a member of the church was very poor and had dirty feet. Would he bring out the wash basin, bend down, and wash the feet of the poor man?

Would this happen in a church in Enterprise? A Korean Church? A German Church? Any Alabama church?

Perhaps, but very rarely. Even if a member of the church began to wash someone’s feet in the church, most likely the police would be called and the offender hauled off to jail. Yet this was the example of Christ.

My son, Michael, and I used to play a silly little game when he was a toddler. It was called “Opposites Day”. Whatever we answered to a question, the opposite would be true. After participating for a while, I would forget the rules. Michael would say, ‘Dad, can we go to the American market for chocolate (Norwegian) eggs.’  I would say ‘No, not today son.’ He would say, ‘Good, Dad. Let’s go get them’ I would protest until he reminded me that today is ‘Opposites Day.’

The only way a Christian can be worthy is in the knowledge that he is unworthy. The only way he can be great is in becoming small and humble.

Don’t forget to look through the “me” or small end of the telescope TOWARD THE LARGE END (GOD).  Magnify God, not self!

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly  contained in the forewords above.

Consider the words from the Collect, wherein we ask God that we might be like … James, leaving his father and all that he had, without delay was obedient unto the calling of thy Son Jesus Christ, and followed him; so we, forsaking all worldly and carnal affections, may be evermore ready to follow thy holy commandments …

The Collect reminds us as James forsook the world and the carnal pleasure of it to follow Christ, if we too are to truly be followers of Christ we must follow his example. He was making a good living being a fisherman but he forsook that when he followed Christ. We don’t necessarily have to give up our jobs, but the message is clear that if doing our jobs will hinder our ability to follow Christ (i.e if they ask us to do anything immoral/against Scriptures) then in that case it probably would be a good idea to quit our jobs and find one with a corporate culture that is more aligned with the values of Scripture. It is getting harder and harder to find one these days, but I believe it is still possible.  It is getting harder and harder to be a professing Christian in this country as the liberals have obtained all the power in the government and are using the full power of the government to persecute Christians.

The second half of the Book of Luke the Physician is entitled The Acts of the Apostles and recounts the time after the crucifixion and resurrection.  It covers the demise of many of Christ’s followers, among them James, the son of Zebedee.  It warns us that if we are to truly follow Christ we must expect we will be persecuted and quite possibly killed for our faith. That is the cost of following Christ, we lose the respect of the world, but what we do gain is eternal life and the respect of God. If you look at it in those terms, losing the respect of the world is a fleeting thing and only temporal, but eternal life and God’s respect is eternal.

The Gospel recounts James’ mother asking her sons be Jesus’ righthand men.  Her request somewhat reminds me of Jesus’s words, Forgive them Father for they know not what they do… Jesus went on to explain that position was not His to appoint but that of God the Father’s and that positions are not worth squabbling over. It is what you do with that position to help others that makes difference. To have a higher position and abuse it or not use it properly is not what the church is about. Jesus explains it is about helping other people and sharing the Good News with those people and it is in the end all about the individual’s actions that make the position.

So, what to make of this?

Action counts.  For by their actions ye shall know them.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Knowing Wisdom

Psalm 119: 33-48 • Zechariah  4:1-10 • John 7: 14-24

The Eighth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

O

 GOD, whose never-failing providence ordereth all things both in heaven and earth; We humbly beseech thee to put away from us all hurtful things, and to give us those things which are profitable for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Psalm 119 – Your Word is a Lamp to My Feet (33-48)

T

EACH me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.

34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.

37 Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.

38 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear.

39 Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good.

40 Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness.

41 Let thy mercies come also unto me, O LORD, even thy salvation, according to thy word.

42 So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word.

43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments.

44 So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever.

45 And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts.

46 I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed.

47 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.

48 My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.

Today’s three selections of scripture contain the theme of wisdom interwoven in the Word.

Sometimes we get so far from God’s word, we don’t see the simple message, in this case, we are looking at the concept of wisdom.

Not necessarily having it, but being able to understand what it looks like, what it is shaped by, why it is important to our daily spiritual and temporal walk in life.

It can be very hard, trying to seek the wisdom of God especially when you are daily bombarded by the cares and wears of the world.

It can be so hard to try and stay on the path of righteousness, we must daily renew our walk, each morning or before we retire at night, we need to spend a while in the Word of God.  We need a daily feeding of the Word as we find in the Holy Bible. This will lift us up, this will help to strengthen us..one day at a time.

35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.

We need wisdom to get along in life …Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.

Verse 37 of this passage is very practical, just turn my eyes from the junk in life, give me life instead. In Verse 40, the psalmist asks for the desire to seek God’s precepts, to get the life caused by righteousness of those precepts.

Let us listen to what Bishop JC Ryle a great churchman of the last part of the 19th century wrote concerning a Christian’s daily walk:

He endeavors to live according to God’s will, to do the things that please God, to avoid the things that God hates. His aim and desire is to love God with heart and soul, and mind and strength, and to love his neighbor as himself. His wish is to be continually looking to Christ as his example as well as his Savior, and to show himself Christ’s friend by doing whatever Christ commands. No doubt he is not perfect. None will tell you that sooner than himself. He groans under the burden of indwelling corruption cleaving to him. He finds an evil principle within him constantly warring against grace, and trying to draw him away from God. But he does not consent to it, though he cannot prevent its presence.In spite of all short-comings, the average bent and bias of his ways is holy—his doings holy—his tastes holy—and his habits holy. In spite of all his swerving and turning aside, like a ship going against a contrary wind, the general course of his life is in one direction—toward God and for God. And though he may sometimes feel so low that he questions whether he is a Christian at all, in his calmer moments he will generally be able to say, with old John Newton, “I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I want to be, I am not what I hope to be in another world—but still I am not what I once used to be, and by the grace of God I am what I am.

What does wisdom look like?  Give an ear to this next passage, pretty much modern day bullet points, from Proverbs 1:

T

HE proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

4 To give subtitle to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

Let us now look at the writings attributed to King Solomon, especially in his early days as king of the nation of Israel. This very familiar passage gives us simple instructions to how to find wisdom. That the marks of such wisdom are shown in your behavior towards others. That those who are wise will increase in this wisdom and learning. It really isn’t very hard to understand, wisdom takes discernment, you must notice and learn what wisdom is.  Dealing with justice and equity, listen and increase in learning. Understand and obtain guidance.  Notice the warning at the end of this passage: Have a reverence for God, know that He is in control, this is the beginning of knowledge, which leads to wisdom.  But the warning to the fool must also be understood, if you despise wisdom and instruction, it is to your peril.  Be aware of foolish behavior.

7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Now let us see what St. John wrote about wisdom and knowledge.

14 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

This account is early in Christ’s ministry, people are still wondering about his credentials. They want to know how he knows so much, and yet is a simple laborer.

15 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

So, Jesus explains.

16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. 17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

It is interesting, that Jesus put the discernment back on the listener.  This of course was due to the need for those listening to believe what was being taught, this would divide out the believer from the non-believer.  This would be based on wisdom, or as would later be given, the Holy Spirit. He would give wisdom to those who were to receive it, they would then be able to discern the good from the evil.  In the next passage, Jesus gives the listeners a clue as how to discern a person who is from God.

18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

If that person speaking does not try to puff themselves up, but point to the Glory of God, that person is of God. This is the application of wisdom. So many times in the past centuries people have followed false teachers, prophets, and leaders, they wouldn’t have if they had stopped to think about what they were saying.

  • Did they honor God?
  • Did they point to Jesus as the ONLY WAY?
  • Did they seek to stay out of the way and let the Holy Spirit do his job?

Just in our lifetime there have been many a false teacher and so called prophets who have lead people to perdition.

Think of Jim Jones and Jonestown, David Koresh and Waco, plus countless others who have just taken financial advantage of unwise believers over the years.

Look at Verse 18 of the Seventh Chapter of John again. Make sure those who seek to teach you are in God’s word, for God’s work, for God’s kingdom, not something they are doing for themselves.

Let us pray.

G

OD be merciful unto us, and bless us, * and show us the light of his countenance, and be merciful unto us; That thy way may be known upon earth, * thy saving health among all nations. Let the people praise thee, O God; * yea, let all the people praise thee. O let the nations rejoice and be glad; * for thou shalt judge the folk righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Let the people praise thee, O God; * yea, let all the people praise thee. Then shall the earth bring forth her increase; * and God, even our own God, shall give us his blessing. God shall bless us; * and all the ends of the world shall fear him.

A

LMIGHTY God, who alone gavest us the breath of life, and alone canst keep alive in us the holy desires thou dost impart; We beseech thee, for thy compassion’s sake, to sanctify all our thoughts and endeavours; that we may neither begin an action without a pure intention nor continue it without thy blessing. And grant that, having the eyes of the mind opened to behold things invisible and unseen, we may in heart be inspired by thy wisdom, and in work be upheld by thy strength, and in the end be accepted of thee as thy faithful servants; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

T

HE Lord bless us, and keep us. The Lord make His face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up His countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Eighth Sunday after Trinity

In our his letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul noted that, For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear: but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father (Romans 8:15). And in another epistle, the apostle admonished, For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (II Timothy 1:7). Consider also the apostle John’s declaration to us in his first epistle (4:18): There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Now consider further vVrse 10 of Psalm 111 wherein we find a seemingly different message: The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever. From this passage, FEAR is interpreted to mean having a healthy respect for God as our Supreme Judge. And because every mortal is under the curse of original sin, so it follows that all human beings ought to FEAR God’s judgment. That is why the Law was given as it reveals our sinful natures. Witness the apostle Paul’s words in Romans (3:19-20), Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for the law is the knowledge of sin. The Law also provided a means for covering sin in order that the Old Testament saints might commune with God. Witness also the words of Moses in the bBook of Leviticus (16:30-34): For on that day [the Day of Atonement] shall the priest make an atonement of you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD… And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year… Needless to say that time and again, the children of Israel violated God’s law and lived in outright disobedience to his expressed will. In such a state, they had lost that godly fear which was necessary for their fellowship with him. And so, without godly FEAR, they did not seek to be cleansed of their iniquities which in turn opened them up to God’s wrath.

The atheists and agnostics of our day are quick to grasp selected passages of Scripture on account of their seeming paradoxical nature without seeking to learn their precise biblical meaning. In an attempt to justify themselves, they have attached their own meaning to such passages in an effort to repudiate the divine authenticity of the Bible, as well as to mischaracterize the Christian religion as nothing more than an ancient fable founded upon hypocrisy and inconsistency. Many refuse to recognize their errant behaviors for what they are and confess them to God in Christ Jesus. They shun God’s true religion and his redemption to their detriment. Christians have been warned by our apostolic fathers concerning those who would mock and scoff as well as twist God’s word. Since the beginning of the Christian Church, these heretics have sought to ruin the faith of the elect. As eter warning in his second epistle (3:3-4): Knowing this first that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? And further on in that same chapter he wrote a stirring defense of Saint Paul, whose writings the unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction (vv. 15-16) . Twisting God’s word is not something he takes lightly, and he will judge in the strongest terms those who have misused his word written for their sordid purposes. Witness the words of the apostle John in Revelation: If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are in this book. And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life… (22:18-19).

Returning to the passages above concerning FEAR, let us reflect on what the Bible has to say about this word. First of all, we can define FEAR to be anything which causes us anxiety. We FEAR an economic meltdown because it might result in our being financially ruined. We FEAR criminal gangs because they interfere with our right to unhindered enjoyment of public spaces. We FEAR foreign interventions because they might result in a global war which will result in a horrendous loss of life, and, given our tenuous economic state, one which will likely collapse our entire social and political order. And finally, we FEAR the expansion of government control over our lives because it will diminish our privacy and impact negatively upon our rights and liberties as free persons. Yes, there is much we could add to our list of current and worldly fears.

Nevertheless, God has called us to embrace a perfect love which casts out FEAR. For it is through Christ’s atoning work that we have been justified and sanctified. In our acceptance of his free gift we have moved from FEAR to FAITH. We trust in the regenerating power of the Holy Ghost who guides us into all truth and who leads us to confess our sins and trespasses. And on that account we are made right with God, and are , by extension, made heirs with Christ in his kingdom. Consider the words of Moses as found in the Book of Deuteronomy (6:4-5) Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: and thou shall love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. As Christians, we understand that our love of Jesus Christ brings us the love of God the Father. Our faith overcomes that natural tendency in us to FEAR the judgment of a righteous and holy God. Our Lord encourages us to consider him a friend as well as our Saviour. Witness also the words of our Lord as recorded in St. John’s gospel (15:14-15), Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Hence forth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

The critic and skeptic are pawns of the Devil; for under his tutelage they will persist in their refusal to follow God’s rules for life. And their persistence in this cause mirrors that of the leaders of the Jews during our Lord’s earthly ministry. For if they continue in that rejection, they do indeed have much to FEAR! The earthly and profane rulers of this world seek to instill FEAR into all who are subject to their control. That is basically how human government has perverted its duty to preserve righteousness and truth, and it is entirely demonic. The Devil seeks to imprison as many as he can with a spirit of FEAR because it is both crippling and debilitating. He has sought to imprison even the elect of God that they too might be compelled to live in such a state. No doubt, if he can succeed with the godly such will impair the communication of the gospel of truth to those who languish in his prison house of sin and degradation. We must not FEAR. We must do our duty. God has given us his word written to serve as a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. As Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson is reputed to have said, “The duty is ours the consequences are God’s.” Live, therefore, in obedience to Christ and live without fear knowing that all is in God’s hands.

Let us pray,

F

ATHER, give us hearts to love thee so that we might live without fear, and in so doing that we might better serve thee in this life; for these things we ask in the name of our Saviour and Friend, even Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week,

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells

While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.
