On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

The Bible tells us that both Sodom and Egypt were pleasant places for the unregenerate as compared with the idea of trekking out into the wilderness to commune with God. Still, a wilderness where God is will be far and away more preferable for those who are born-again than to remain in the modern versions of Sodom or Egypt.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard.  It is quite interesting the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States.  Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church.  Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of the nation.

The Propers for today are found on Page 214-215, with the Collect first:

L

ORD, we pray thee that thy grace may always prevent[1] and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle for today came from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians beginning at the First Verse of the Fourth Chapter.  Once again, Paul calls us to a new life, different from our old life.  A life in which we act in a manner worthy of the better life to which we have been called by Christ and for which He gave His life.  Paul, of all people, knows the importance of setting aside your old life, as Saul did, so that as Paul he asks us to put God first in our lives, to put ourselves last.  He reminds us, There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.  The key to a successful life is to put the important things at the top of your To Do List. And, notice it is a To Do List, not a To Think About or To Wait a While List.   What is more important than God?

I

therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, for-bearing one another in love; endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all[2].

Today’s Holy Gospel came from the Gospel of Saint Luke, the Fourteenth Chapter, beginning at the First Verse.  The Gospel starts out reminding us the Law was designed to be flexible.  The goal is to do God’s will, not to follow the letter of the law as the Pharisees were so keen on.  They brought before Him a man in need of healing as they sat to eat on the Sabbath Day.  They watched to see what He would do.  Putting the monkey on their back, He asked, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath Day?  Wishing to  be in a position to criticize rather than answer, they held their peace.  He healed the man, then asked them, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the Sabbath Day?  They would not respond; for the answer was obvious.

Then He put forth a parable to those who had been invited to dine with him, after He had seen them joust for the seats of honor.  When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest seat; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; and he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest place; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.  Do we put God first and let others raise us up, or do we put ourselves first and let others put us down?

I

t came came to pass, as Jesus went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go; and answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? And they could not answer him again to these things. And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief seats; saying unto them, When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest seat; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; and he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest place; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. It was the Sabbath Day.

Jesus has been invited to the house of a prominent Pharisee one of the chief of them, we are told.

v

And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

Many other of the Pharisees were doubtless there for they watched him. How greatly would they have benefitted if they had watched Him to learn instead of to find fault.

Why was Jesus invited by one of those who hated Him and was constantly trying to destroy Him? They had invited Jesus to dinner with the intention of catching Him in an act of disobedience of the Sabbath – it was a ‘set up’ in the popular vernacular.

Why do you suppose Jesus accepted the invitation?  Jesus was no recluse – He came to help all who would hear Him.  He loved to be in social gatherings where men would listen – ALL men…even Pharisees; and he knew that He would reveal truth even to unbelievers.

And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

The cunning mind of the Pharisee bypassed no opportunity in providing a means of entrapment for Christ. Seemingly, just by coincidence, a man with a grave and serious malady is present – a man who probably had not been invited had it not fit comfortably in the plans of the Pharisees to present Jesus with a temptation.

These men are ruthless. They will use even the kindness and compassion of Jesus to try and condemn Him.

They have seated the man with the dropsy (congestive heart failure) in a place BEFORE Jesus. They know that He loves to heal and to do good regardless the occasion, but today is the Sabbath! They will use this as an occasion to condemn Christ of violating the Sabbath by doing healing works on this day.

But Jesus knows the heart of men, and He knows the evil thoughts of the hearts of those who sit watching Him.

And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

Jesus sets the circumstances to turn the tables on these miscreants. The question restated might read: ‘Is it ever unlawful to do good?’  Did God provide man with the day of rest for the purpose of omitting even deeds of kindness?

The Pharisees and priests of Jesus day had added so many cumbersome proscriptions to the Sabbath observance and every other aspect of the law, that men could not bear them without misery – just the opposite of what God had intended.

Jesus was continually tempted in every way that we are tempted, but Jesus never gave into temptation except in certain cases.

What were those cases? When tempted to do good, as in the present case, Christ could not resist the temptation to act out of His compassion to heal and to comfort. This was not a temptation to sin, but a temptation by sinful men of Christ to do good. He always did!

You and I are tempted, on the other hand, to do bad things not pleasing to God. But in every temptation to do evil is found an opportunity to, instead, do good. Jesus sets the example for us in every case.

Because they have set their trap, the Pharisees do not respond to the pointed question of Christ: And they held their peaceMen will most often speak out when they can condemn or hurt, but will less often speak out on the part of righteousness. Political correctness restrains them from speaking righteousness but tends always to wickedness.

So Jesus poses the simple question which they decline to answer so as not to give away their plot. How many clergy, as well as laity, remain silent on issues of great importance?  I have observed the silence, even on discussion groups of the church, remain stony silent on matters on which they should have strong opinion. The silence of those is like a scream in the night.

Those who are legalist often forget that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. (Mark 2:27)

The failure to accept the Sabbath in the manner and purpose for which it was given nullifies its benefits. The Christian Sabbath is not a once per week observance but a daily one. Christ has given us an Eternal Sabbath (Rest).

And he took him, and healed him, and let him go.  The whole will of Christ was to heal the man and not to make a spectacle of him. So Jesus, instead of having the man remain standing by for show, releases him to go his way. How different from the Pharisees who heartlessly brought the man to tempt Christ.

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

Had they forgotten the counsel of Proverbs 12:11 –  A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

An ox or a donkey were precious to men who depended on them to produce income. If one of the Pharisees own precious animals fell into a ditch on the Sabbath, he would certainly have rescued the animal, if not out of kindness, then out of greed.

He thus shuts them. Up to this startling alternative: ‘Not to do good, when it is in the power of our hand to do it, is to do evil; not to save life, when we can, is to kill.’

And they could not answer him again to these things.   7 And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,

Righteous words will shut the mouth of the wicked.

Jesus is an observer of men and women. He watched as the poor widow cast her all into the Temple treasury, and He has observed here how the guests of the Pharisee came into the room and chose the best seats and provisions.  They sought to have their seating lend them honor when they should have allowed their honor to determine their seating. They lacked humility and were filled with false pride.

So, Jesus tells them a story (Parable) to which they can relate in common life:

When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

All of the counsels of Christ are full of spiritual and uplifting truths. This short Parable is no exception.

Jesus begins the story with a delicate allusion to a type of gathering that would be different from that of his present host of whom He has been invited. The venue is a wedding feast, but still a feast so that the same principle will apply.

When we are invited to a special event, do not exalt your importance by finding the highest place, or most visible place, to stand or sit.  We will inevitably to be embarrassed by our presumptive pride when we are told, curtly, to move and surrender your place to one having greater honor than you. The only place left at that time will be the place of least honor – the lowest room. And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

He has given an example of how not to behave, but He does not leave us in doubt as to how we should behave: But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

Notice the host refers to the man who is humble and takes the very lowest place of honor as Friend. He did not refer to the man who took the highest place as Friend. Men despise false pride and arrogance in others.  If we humble ourselves, men will always elevate us in esteem. But greater is the reward in Heaven!

A college professor once hosted a tea for his graduating students.  When they all presented themselves at his home, the professor had all the cups, in the right number, assembled on the table. The cups were all of different kinds. One was of stone, one of crystal, one of clay, and some were shaped curiously different from any before seen.  When the professor invited the students to take a cup, the first took the crystal, the next the glass, the next the stone, the next the clay, and so forth.

As the professor watched them drink their tea that he had poured for them, he observed that they had each chosen the best cup at the table; but the purpose of a tea was not the kind of cup one drank from, but the tea which the cup contained. The quality of the tea is not changed by the quality of the cup which contains it. So with our worthiness before God. It is not some superficial position or appearance that is important, but what is inside.

What of you and me? Do we honor Christ in all good works during our eternal Sabbath Rest in Him?

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California

Today’s sermon tied the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and talked, as is oft the case, of the need for action, not simply diction.

Consider the words of the Collect, … thy grace may always prevent and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works …

The first thing to consider when you look at today’s Collect is a word: prevent.  Prevent is a word that has many meanings, and at least one has fallen out of general usage as time has gone on.  This is one of them.  In this case the word prevent means to go before.  Before you object to archaic words, consider this is a current word, it just has a use you may not have been aware of and now you are!  What a bonus for this week!

So, we ask God that His Grace, His Love, His Power, His Help may go before and after us to protect us and guide us that we might desire to do what He wants us to do.  Pretty much a re-wording of a lot of the Collects.  Why would that be? Simply put it is because we are imperfect creatures with free will and we have the same failings week after week, so we need the same message week after week to reinforce what God wants us to learn. The more the message is repeated, the more likely it is to sink into our hearts, souls and minds.

We tend to sometimes think we know ourselves better, however that is simply false. God designed and built each and every one of us. Do we truly think we know more than our Creator? That is the foolishness of our natural inclination talking.  If we stop to think, we realize, with the help of the Holy Ghost, God truly knows what is best for us and it will be a lot better for us if we listen to him.  If we follow what He wants for us, we are guaranteed to have good results in the long run. It does not mean we will not suffer in the short term; however it means if we follow God’s will for us, then we will come out ahead in the end, in our eternal life. In the end will it be our will that is followed or God’s will?

As a matter of course, we will make mischief and or trouble, some of us more than others. God is the ever patient father who has to gently warn us and allow us to experience the consequences of our inclination to sin, in order to learn not to do it. This is His form of correction. He seldom corrects us directly, but allows us to be corrected by our consequences of our bad decisions. If we never got to experience the natural results of our mistakes, we would never learn. When bad things happen as a result of our doing, it is not His fault that’s it happened, but our fault for not having done what we were supposed to do because it was too difficult.

The other part of the collect talks about asking God to make us be continually given to do good works. This means to put His Will into our heart and give us a desire to continually do good works for others, by given, the collect means to put a desire into our hearts to do God’s Will here on Earth and part of doing His Will on Earth is performing good actions, otherwise known as good works.  If we are followers of Christ, as a matter of course, we will perform such good works as those of which we are capable. However, we cannot perform these good works of our own accord; we need His guiding spirit, so we ask Him to shine and come into our hearts and help us have the mindset to do those good works for Him.

Through consequences of our sinful actions, we know that we shouldn’t do it again.  We know, often very clearly, what we want; God knows, always very clearly, what we need.  There is almost always a distinct difference between what we want and what we need. God knows what we want is usually not good for us. But what we need is always good for us.

But we do not often know what God wants for us, so we have to first pray to Him to find out what He wants, then the most critical step of the communications is we have to listen to what He says and once we listen, then act upon what He says.  He is there, like the rubrics to guide us along our paths in our daily life.  So, we need to ask God every day, every time, for help to do our duty. Every day, every time, He will answer our questions, we just need to open our hearts, souls, minds and ears to Him, and after hearing His Answer, act upon it

So, what does Paul tell us in his letter to us? He is callings to a new life, different from our old life.  He is calling us to reform and to turn a new leaf so to speak. We shed our old clothes, as it were, like reptiles shedding their old skin and put on the brand new armor of light, new helmet, new boots, new everything.  He calls us to leave the old sinful live behind and live anew as one of God’s family members. It is not the easiest thing in the world to do, but as the saying goes, nothing worth doing is ever easy. With the help of the Holy Ghost we can live this new life and turn our back on our old sinful lives.

This is made possible by the Holy Ghost, who is our lifeline to God our Father. Paul, of all people, knows the importance of setting aside your old life, as Saul did; as Paul he asks us to put God first in our lives, to put ourselves last.  He even changed his name to reflect his state as a new man under Our Lord’s leadership. It is not a I’ll Get a Round To It List, or What I Don’t Want to Do List.  What is more important than God? It is all about prioritization, putting God ahead of your wants and desires.

When Luke relates the parable of the feast, it is more than just a seating diagram. I liken it to the tale of the publican and the Pharisee. When Christ talks about the man who exalts himself and sits too high at the wedding and thus must be abased, that would be the Pharisee. When Christ then talks about the man who sits low, and is raised to the higher station, I think of the publican, who smote his breast and would not even raise up his eyes to heaven. We have to be the publican in our dealings with not only God, but all people, rather than our natural tendency of being the Pharisee. We should not be one of those selfish individuals who always causes grief for others because he is blind to his own faults and only thinks of himself. Again, as with the ceasing from sin, this is one of the harder things we have to do. But it must be done, no matter how we feel about it. So, let us turn to our Lord to help with it, because He alone can help us. He can only help us if we are truly willing with our hearts, souls and minds. We have to be willing to act and do actions, and not just say it.

It is very possible to do the good deeds and have fun doing them. The time we spent in worship with the other ministers and their wives at the AOC Conventions in the past proves this. Doing good things for other people and being with other believers gives me some of the greatest happiness I have ever felt. This comes from the Holy Ghost, from being inspired by Him, around other believers. Wherever two or three or gathered, Christ is there also. It is a wonderful feeling wherever He is.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

What is required of a pastor?

26 September 2021, Anno Domini

Psalm 25 • Jeremiah 13:15-21 • Mark 10:35-45

The Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

L

ORD, we pray thee that thy grace may always prevent and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We find an interesting occurrence in our second lesson today.   The human desire for relevance coming into conflict with the duty of a pastor.   If we take to heart the message we find in this tenth chapter of Mark’s gospel, we can very easily discern when wolves get in among the flock. In other words when those who are false teachers/leaders rise up in the midst of believers, we should have no problems identifying them. In these latter day it will get more and more chaotic as Satan tries to lead the faithful astray. He already has his own, he doesn’t need to lead them, he needs to sow chaos amongst the believers, so beloved be aware of this and let us learn from the great lessons of Christ Jesus, our Savior.

  1. When the brothers James and John asked Jesus for a special favor, he gently answers them that at least part of what they asked for will be fulfilled. In a sense, the duty of a believer to take up their cross and follow Jesus was what the Master was explaining to the brothers.

35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.  36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?  37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.   Jesus answers the brothers: 38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

  1. The seating arrangement that James and John were asking for was indicative of places of honor in that society. The brothers did not fully understand the Kingdom concept yet, that is why Jesus told them it was not his place to award those positions of honor. God the Father would place Jesus on His right side which would indicate the office of advocate/redeemer/savior in the culture.  We see this depicted in the trial and death sentence of St. Stephen, the first martyr for the faith… But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God.

Notice Stephan says the Jesus is on the right hand of God (the Father) standing. That is a position of authority and action.  Jesus was advocating for Stephan as he was dying under a hail of stones. Wow, how much more of an illustration do we need to see the kingdom relationship of God the Father and God the Son?

  1. The cup that Jesus refers to is the physical death on the Cross, the very cup he asked God the Father to spare him from. But he then says …not my will by thy will be done... in regards to the death that he would face the next day.

  1. The baptism being the Holy Spirit, who came down from heaven at the Jordan baptism done by John the baptizer. This of course is a future reference to the Day of Pentecost and the pouring out of the Holy Spirit on the disciples at Jerusalem.

Now Jesus explains to the disciples about what it will mean to be a follower of Him. The ancient customs of the time, which are still prevalent today, will not be the standard of measurement as far as what a leader or in this case pastor will be.

42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.

The true standard of measurement will be what Jesus explains:

43  But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:  And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.  For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

You will notice that to make clear what He is explaining, He uses two different words to outline what it means to be a leader of men in the Faith.  Minister and servant are the two words He uses. A minister makes sure that all are helped, cared for, comforted (made comfortable) and in other words made to feel safe.  The servant is even more involved, they care for physical needs such as food and shelter. And in this time, it also included washing the road dust off the feet of the weary traveler and making them comfortable for the evening. These tasks were some of the lowliest of all task to be performed by the least in society.

And how does Jesus finish up the passage?  For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister…(and then the most important reason for Jesus earthly stay) and to give his life a ransom for many.

What say you…men of God. Do you minister to your flock? Do you serve your flock as a servant? Do you reach out to comfort those in need?

These attributes that Jesus illustrated in this passage will give a believer the ‘litmus test’ of what a true pastor is; if he is always about himself, if he is always seeking gain, if he is always seeking fame, this behavior is a red flag to believers. Your pastor is not of the image of Christ.

Sad to say, but over the years when false preachers and leaders have shown up, if these attributes had been applied there may have been much trouble averted. Look at the life and times of Jim Jones, David Koresh, and ilk in modern times, much tragedy could have been avoided. And in past eras if such attributes had been applied the founders of Adventism, LDS, Jehovah’s Witness many more could have avoided the pitfalls of heresy.

Beloved, the Word of God does not return void. When God inspired the writers of the Bible to put down the record of history, prophecy, covenant, and the promise of salvation, He made sure that ALL of it was completely truthful.

As faithful pastors it is our duty to make sure we are following the same precepts and doctrine… the faith once delivered… in all that we do and say.

Let us pray:

O

 GOD, by whom the meek are guided in judgement, and light riseth up in darkness for the godly: Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what thou wouldest have us to do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices, and that in thy light we may see light, and in thy straight path may not stumble, through Jesus Christ our Lord.        Amen.

O

 MOST loving Father, who willest us to give thanks for all things, to dread nothing but the loss of thee, and to cast all our care on thee, who carest for us: Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, and grant that no clouds of this mortal life may hid from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which thou hast manifested unto us in thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.        Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore.        Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

In today’s epistle, we have Paul’s warning to the Ephesian elders regarding the tending of their flocks. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears (Acts 20:28- 31). And such was no doubt a timely message for within a generation the heresy of Gnosticism appeared in Asia Minor and deceived many just as the apostle had warned. As church historian Jesse Hurlbut explained, The Gnostics… arose in Asia Minor… and were a grafting of Christianity upon paganism. An important feature of Gnosticism was that it permitted the interpretation of the Bible in such a manner that the written word of God could be taken to mean whatever the reader desired. And on that account, it reduced the fundamental truths of the Christian faith to mere allegory and presumption. Truly it qualified as one of those doctrines of devils (I Timothy 4:1) and destructive heresies (II Peter 2:1) which the apostles had written about.

Dr. Merrill Unger once observed, the term ‘heresy’, [in] its strictly New Testament usage… [is] not… primarily false doctrine… but [is] first and foremost… sectarian disharmony, and factional division… a deadly and damnable satanic device, utterly destructive of Christian oneness. And in affirmation of what Dr. Unger has written, there seems to be an ever-increasing number of church movements and cults that are drawing people away from traditional orthodox Christian bodies. They offer their wares in venues where the senses are aroused while the proverbial wool is pulled over the eyes of everyone present. It is more akin to a science fiction story where all sorts of things are possible while the minds of their viewers are neutralized so that they might entertain their messages without rejecting them out of hand. Everything from worship practices and doctrinal pronouncements are foisted upon their attendees who come hardly equipped to discuss the truth of Scripture much less defend the same in any meaningful way. If only those poor souls were of a mind to question their deceivers in detail they would find that the source of their offerings came not from the Lord of all living, but the god of this world.

Consider the words of St. Paul in our epistle lesson: PAUL, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead). The apostle’s calling came as a result of his experience on the road to Damascus. He later communed with our Lord in Arabia where he received instruction regarding his ministry and doctrine. The apostle Paul confirms this in his first epistle to the Corinthians wherein he wrote, Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? (9:1)  And in his epistle to the Galatians he stated clearly that, …I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ (1:11-12).

Scripture tells us that the office of apostle was limited to those men who were called directly by our Lord. If the office was to have continued in perpetuity, then the Holy Ghost would have supplied the criteria for filling it. Nevertheless, such was not the case. And regarding those who would prophesy in the name of the LORD, Moses warned, But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously… (Deuteronomy 18:20-22). While the church may have within its membership those who have been empowered to prophesy, there is no office of prophet within the body of Christ. It is a spiritual gift— like speaking in tongues— which is regulated by the provisions of I Corinthians 14. Only the Holy Ghost guides us into all truth and away from error. If he did not instruct the apostles concerning the continuance their offices, then we ought not accept any one who would assume that office.

As we have learned, all sorts of errors are indeed acceptable if you can cloak them with an elastic and distorted understanding of God’s word written. Some heretics claim that there will be a great revival before Christ comes again. This too is without scriptural support. Our Lord himself confirmed that when he asked, Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? (Luke 18:8) And in line with that the apostle Paul warned the Thessalonians in his second epistle to, be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed… (2:2-3). St. Paul also described the last days as perilous times (II Timothy 3:1). Keep in mind that the Antichrist will be defeated by our Lord alone at his coming and not by a massive revival of souls.

Our Lord warned of a great deception in the last days which will include, great signs and wonders; insomuch that if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect (St. Matthew 24:24). That clearly covers extra-biblical and occultic practices and beliefs. The lesson here is simple. Those who follow the charlatans of the modern apostate Christianity are likened unto the blind following blind, into the ditch of perdition. Don’t be counted among them.

Those who truly love the Lord understand that the Bible is the rule and guide of our faith and practice. And if such is the case then why should any believer embrace those persons or groups which have made revisions— both redactions and additions— to Holy Writ? As Matthew Henry wrote concerning the same in his notation on Revelation 22:18-19 that the Lord had placed, … a most solemn sanction, condemning and cursing all who should dare to corrupt or change the word of God… [It] is a flaming sword, to guard the canon of Scripture from profane hands. Such a fence as this God set about the law (Deuteronomy 4:2) and the whole Old Testament (Malachi 4:4), and now in the most solemn manner about the whole Bible, assuring us that it is a book of the most sacred nature, divine authority, and of lasting importance.

In closing, the imaginations of wicked should not be accepted by the body of Christ. We ought to heed the warning which our Lord gave us in the Olivet Discourse, Take heed that no man deceive you (Matthew 24:4). That’s our challenge. So when someone tells you that the Bible is unsound or incomplete, and that there is a new and better revelation awaiting you if only you are willing to come under the authority of some new apostle, prophet, or what have you, watch out! The wolves in sheep’s clothing are at the door ready to draw you away as their disciples. Keep your door shut against their offerings and appeals and seek the Lord’s will for you via your prayers and trusting in his word written. If you are sincere, he will answer you in ways that will affirm his presence as he sees fit. Let God act in his time and praise him for his gifts of wisdom and grace in your life.

Let us pray,

O

 LORD, whose word is truth and sufficient unto every good word and work; guide us by means of the Holy Ghost to fully accept and trust the Scriptures alone as they are the words of life unto salvation in Christ Jesus; for it is in his most blessed name that we ask these things of thee. Amen.

Have a blessed week,

Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

11 September 2001

We recall the twentieth anniversary of the attack on the United States of America by the forces of Islam.  This attack, the most deadly of any ever perpetrated on the country brought us together for an instant, then its impact faded with most Americans who wanted to go back to nicer times.  It allowed the massive attack on our liberty in the name of safety.  Please pray for those whose lives were lost or changed by this attack, in particular their families.  Recall the heroism and pray that sense of unity might return to the country.  We are not at war with Islam, Islam is clearly war with us.  That is a problem.  In the past twenty years our country has moved so far from that given to us that it is no longer recognizable.  We are told that if the right people believe something it is fact.  That is an even bigger problem.  The country has turned its back on God.   That the real problem.  Please pray for our country

.

Corona Virus

With most of the world on some form of restriction, we ask you pray for the governments be guided into appropriate reaction and scientists find cures and vaccines and that the virus pass each of us by.

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

[1]             Prevent is a word that has many uses, and at least one has fallen out of general usage as time has gone on.  This is one of them.  In this case the word prevent means to go before.  Before you object to archaic words, consider this is a current word, it just has a use you may not have been aware of and now you are!  What a bonus for this week!

[2]             you all, normally pronounced ya’ll, is clear proof Paul was from the South.
