Trinity Sunday Sunday Report

Today was Trinity Sunday, the beginning of the Endless Green Season, the liturgical color is white, thus the green outlined white letters of the title!

Trinity Joke
Jesus said, “Whom do men say that I am?”

And his disciples answered and said, “Some say you are John the Baptist returned from the dead; others say Elias or other of the old prophets.”

And Jesus answered and said, “But whom do you say that I am?”

Peter answered and said, “Thou art the Logos , existing in the Father as His rationality and then, by an act of His will, being generated, in consideration of the various functions by which God is related to his creation, but only on the fact that Scripture speaks of a Father, and a Son, and a Holy Spirit, each member of the Trinity being coequal with every other member, and each acting inseparably with and interpenetrating every other member, with only an economic subordination within God, but causing no division which would make the substance no longer simple.”

And Jesus answering, saith, “Say what?”

On Point
Someone asked, where do the quotes come from? The answer is from the people who uttered them. But, how did you find them? Oh, that. Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan. He always has some great ones to share. On to the On Point quotes –

Through A Glass Darkly
Perhaps I stabbed our Savior
In His sacred helpless side.
Yet I’ve called His name in blessing
When in after times I died.

Through the travail of the ages
Midst the pomp and toil of war
Have I fought and strove and perished
Countless times upon this star.

I have sinned and I have suffered
Played the hero and the knave
Fought for belly, shame or country
And for each have found a grave.

So as through a glass and darkly
The age long strife I see
Where I fought in many guises,
Many names – but always me.

So forever in the future
Shall I battle as of yore,
Dying to be born a fighter
But to die again once more.

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off. Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 186-188, with the Collect first:

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hast given unto us thy servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of the Divine Majesty to worship the Unity; We beseech thee that thou wouldest keep us stedfast in this faith, and evermore defend us from all adversities, who livest and reignest, one God, world without end. Amen.

The text which serves as this morning’s Epistle comes from the Fourth Chapter of the Revelation of Saint John the Divine beginning at the First Verse. John attempts to show us the majesty and glory of heaven using words. The picture he paints is intended to be awe inspiring and seems to meet that goal handily:

A
FTER this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes before and behind. And the first was like a lion, and the second like a calf, and the third had a face as a man, and the fourth was like a flying eagle. And the four living creatures had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those living creatures give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are, and were created.

Today’s Gospel came from the Third Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the First Verse:

T
HERE was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: the same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

The Exhortation
While it can be read every time before Holy Communion, three times a year the Exhortation is mandatory; the rubric says: That the Exhortation shall be said on the First Sunday in Advent, the First Sunday in Lent, and Trinity Sunday. The word exhortation means – an address or communication emphatically urging someone to do something. In this case, it urges each of us to consider precisely what we are doing when we come forward to receive the bread and wine of Holy Communion. First, think about the term Holy Communion, that is two words put together. Holy – Set aside Communion – Joined together. Interesting. We are set aside from the world and joined together with God and our fellow Christians in this sacrament.

At this point, we should consider what the Catechism has to say about sacraments:

Question What do you mean by this word Sacrament?
Answer I mean by this word Sacrament an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace given unto us; ordained by Christ himself, as a means whereby we receive this grace, and a pledge to assure us thereof.
Question How many parts are there in a Sacrament?
Answer There are two parts in a Sacrament; the outward and visible sign, and the inward and spiritual grace.
Question Why was the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper ordained?
Answer The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper was ordained for the continual remembrance of the sacrifice of the death of Christ, and of the benefits which we receive thereby.
Question What is the outward part or sign of the Lord’s Supper?
Answer The outward part or sign of the Lord’s Supper is, Bread and Wine, which the Lord hath commanded to be received.
Question What is the inward part, or thing signified?
Answer The inward part, or thing signified, is the Body and Blood of Christ, which are spiritually taken and received by the faithful in the Lord’s Supper.
Question What are the benefits whereof we are partakers in the Lord’s Supper?
Answer The benefits whereof we are partakers in the Lord’s Supper are the strengthening and refreshing of our souls by the Body and Blood of Christ, as our bodies are strengthened and refreshed by the Bread and Wine.
Question What is required of those who come to the Lord’s Supper?
Answer It is required of those who come to the Lord’s Supper to examine themselves, whether they repent them truly of their former sins, with stedfast purpose to lead a new life; to have a lively faith in God’s mercy through Christ, with a thankful remembrance of his death; and to be in charity with all men.
Now when you read or listen to The Exhortation, you will see it is really nothing more than a fancy regurgitation of the Catechism.

THE EXHORTATIONS.
¶ At the time of the Celebration of the Communion, after the prayer for the whole state of Christ’s Church, the Priest may say this Exhortation. And Note, That the Exhortation shall be said on the First Sunday in Advent, the First Sunday in Lent, and Trinity Sunday.

D
EARLY beloved in the Lord, ye who mind to come to the holy Communion of the Body and Blood of our Saviour Christ, must consider how Saint Paul exhorteth all persons diligently to try and examine themselves, before they presume to eat of that Bread, and drink of that Cup. For as the benefit is great, if with a true penitent heart and lively faith we receive that holy Sacrament; so is the danger great, if we receive the same unworthily. Judge therefore yourselves, brethren, that ye be not judged of the Lord; repent you truly for your sins past; have a lively and stedfast faith in Christ our Saviour; amend your lives, and be in perfect charity with all men; so shall ye be meet partakers of those holy mysteries. And above all things ye must give most humble and hearty thanks to God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, for the redemption of the world by the death and passion of our Saviour Christ, both God and man; who did humble himself, even to the death upon the Cross, for us, miserable sinners, who lay in darkness and the shadow of death; that he might make us the children of God, and exalt us to everlasting life. And to the end that we should always remember the exceeding great love of our Master, and only Saviour, Jesus Christ, thus dying for us, and the innumerable benefits which by his precious blood-shedding he hath obtained for us; he hath instituted and ordained holy mysteries, as pledges of his love, and for a continual remembrance of his death, to our great and endless comfort. To him therefore, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, let us give, as we are most bounden, continual thanks; submitting ourselves wholly to his holy will and pleasure, and studying to serve him in true holiness and righteousness all the days of our life. Amen.

Trinity Sunday.
The Collect.

A
LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hast given unto us thy servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of the Divine Majesty to worship the Unity; We beseech thee that thou wouldest keep us stedfast in this faith, and evermore defend us from all adversities, who livest and reignest, one God, world without end. Amen.

TRINITY Season marks the last half of the Christian Calendar Year. The first half, beginning with the Advent Season, define the great doctrines of the Church. The last half, TRINITY, define our response to the works of Christ and our duties to God.

Trinity Sunday is the day that links the two halves together. Both the offer of free grace made available in Christ by the acts of the first half are equally important to our response to that grace through faith unto good works required by the teaching of the second half. We begin the Church year by the promise of God the Father. The Father has promised to send unto us His only Begotten Son that the Advent Season heralds. The Christmas Season is the consummation of that promise. God the Father sent God the Son to us at Christmas. On Whitsunday, we observe the consummation of the Trinity (Triune God) by the gift and coming of the Holy Ghost. So Trinity Sunday recognizes the fullness of God’s presence with His people by the sending of the Holy Ghost of Pentecost.

Grace is a gift of God made available through the life and sacrifice of Christ. ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hast given unto us thy servants grace. A gift does not assume value until it has been received. The means by which the gift is received is by FAITH. The evidence of our salvation BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH is GOOD WORKS. Good works cannot save. It is by grace through faith that saves and makes us yearn to do good. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Eph 2:8-10) Three prepositions seal the whole: BY grace are we saved, THROUGH faith, UNTO good works. “….. by the confession of a true faith” Any works, good or bad, by the unsaved are without any merit whatsoever. An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin. (Prov 21:4)

“. . . . to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity.” It is the gift of grace by way of faith that compels us to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity – the fullness of God in His Triune nature. “. . . . and in the power of the Divine Majesty to worship the Unity.” To what ‘Unity’ does our worship apply? To the same Unity of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost that are ONE in nature and of which we, too, must be ONE in nature with the Church and with the Trinity. Jesus prayed that we would be One with Him just as He was One with the Father. If that be so, we will be One with each other so that no division of the Body of Christ is possible. If we are divided and fragmented by non-essential matters such as carpet color, type of pews, or personality differences, we are not One with Christ.

Just as we cannot boast of our good works, neither can we boast of the free, unmerited grace that saves us; nor of the faith that brought us to receive that grace from God. We beseech thee that thou wouldest keep us stedfast in this faith. It is the power of God that keeps us secure in faith. When God shut the door on Noah and his family, He made them secure in their salvation. Noah was secure in the salvation of the Ark. He could not fall from the Ark because He was shut in. So the truly chosen and elect of God cannot fall from the strong and secure hand of his Savior (Ark).

We have no self-defense against such a powerful enemy as Satan. It is Christ who defeated that old Serpent and won our salvation. If we are in Christ, we are defended against the wiles of the devil. “. . . . and evermore defend us from all adversities” Christ is our Tower, our Bulwark, and our everlasting Defense – the very Rock of our Salvation that is immovable.

The last line of our Prayer of Collect sums the whole of Trinity – One God, in Trinity! “. . . . who livest and reignest, one God, world without end. God is forever alive and He reigns in power and glory. How would we ever presume to come before Him with indifference or irreverence. If Moses was told to remove His shoes before the glorious appearing of God, why are we less respectful. We must approach God with reverential worship, silence before He speaks, and humility of person. Do we observe this reverence before, during, and after worship each service of the Church?

Sermon – The Night Visitor

We are presented an example of a man who counted the cost before investing in Christ. He came at night just as many Christians are undercover believers before the world. But Nicodemus, once he believed, never again came at night, but openly.

In today’s text, let us study together to glean all we possibly can glean from what God is telling us in these passages. Remember that it is God who speaks to us and not the imagination of your pastor.

Christ was often quite harsh and frank in condemning the hypocritical Pharisees. And He treated them with disdain because of the hardness of their hearts, but there were others among the Pharisees with whom Christ was very kind and forgiving – those who honestly sought to know the Truth. One such Pharisee, a member of the powerful Sanhedrin, was Nicodemus.

Note the approach of Nicodemus:

1. He came under cover of darkness. Actually, we all are just like Nicodemus. We begin our search in the darkness of our sins, but, invoked by the urgings of the Holy Spirit, we cautiously (at first) seek to know more of Christ. (1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same came to Jesus by night)

2. Nicodemus had an elementary knowledge of Jesus. He had heard of the condemnation of Christ by His fellow Pharisees, but he had also hear of the amazing miracles Christ had performed (an may have even witnessed some of those miracles), and he had heard of the beautiful doctrines Christ had proclaimed. He wondered at His goodness, and he wondered how could such a one be evil? (and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.). The important thing about Nicodemus was that is: He did not allow his mind to be blocked from learning truth for himself)

3. He was told a mystery by Christ which he could not comprehend: Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? This was an honest question, unlike those asked by the Pharisees who tried always to find fault in Christ. Even though Nicodemus could scarcely understand the depths of the mystery of which Christ spoke, he nevertheless kept his mind in pursuit of Truth.

4. Jesus keeps on the mystery and even broadens it. A keen intellect (which Nicodemus possessed) often needs greater challenge for understanding: Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water (natural birth) and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

5. Do we understand this? Can we see the wind? Do we know that there is a force called ‘wind’ even if we cannot see it? It is not necessary to visibly observe a phenomenon to know that it exists. We cannot see heat or cold, but we certainly understand it. We cannot see darkness, but we can see light and contrast the two.

6. Nicodemus, though he is an infant to these mysteries, presses on for more truth. He does not give up and quit the search! . 9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? Jesus loves honesty and simple faith.

7. The response of Christ to the seeker of truth: 10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? 11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you ofheavenly things? (This is the reason Christ spoke in Parables) 13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.(This clearly refutes the notion that has been the subject of recent books, that someone has visited heaven and returned to tell us about it. This is the height of arrogancy) 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: (Numbers 21: 5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. 6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. 7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. 9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived. The comparison is perfect. WE, being dead in trespasses and sins (Eph 2:1) need only look to the Cross of Calvary for our healing. He who was without sin, became sin for us on the Cross. He bore our VERY sins. 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

8. 8. The change that happened to Nicodemus:? He publicly defended Christ before the Sanhedrin: John 7:50 – 50 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,) 51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth? 52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. He publicly came to beg the body of Christ for burial (in the face of all the enemies of Christ) John 19: 34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. 35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. 36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. 37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. 38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. 39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

Conclusion:

1. Nicodemus came with some basic understanding, but he also came with doubts. Just as we may have first come to Christ.
2. Nicodemus persevered to understand the mystery of Salvation just as you and I may have done.
3. Nicodemus was not afraid to ask questions, and neither should we be.
4. Though he came in darkness, he left in the Light of Christ – just as the beginning of Creation happened in darkness, there was Light in the morning!
5. Nicodemus was associated with the wrong crowd. Some of you may be as well.
6. Nicodemus turned his back on fear and on his former faithless associates on the Sanhedrin. So should we.
7. Nicodemus BELIEVED Christ! And so should we!
8. Nicodemus left a changed man, and so should we.
9. Nicodemus defended the Gospel of Christ, and so should we.
10. Nicodemus, in the end, had great courage for Christ. Do we have that courage?

Sermon – Reverend Hap Arnold – Time and Action
Church of the Faithful Centurion
Descanso, California
Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

Today’s sermon covers the basic concept of the Triune God, that is the Father, Son and Holy Ghost and how they were introduced to us through time and the Bible in particular; it draws the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above. .

Consider these words from the Collect:

… acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of the Divine Majesty to worship the Unity …

In the Collect, we acknowledge there is a Triune God, that is to say there are three aspects of God; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost. A Triune God means literally Three in One, not three separate Gods or godlets, but a single being with three aspects. How does this work?

The honest answer is – WE DON’T KNOW. We have not been told of how this Being operates. We just have been told there are three and They are ONE. We have some knowledge and scriptural guidance on how parts of the thing work, but not all. Saint Paul told the people of Corinth, 12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. (1 Corinthians 13:12) One of the basic principles of classified information is it is only to be revealed to those who have an actual NEED TO KNOW, not just the curious. Like many secrets, we don’t really have a need to know, so we have not been told.

What we do know is:

• God is I AM;
• God the Father sent The Son to be our Savior, He was there at the beginning and created this world;
• The Holy Ghost breathed life into the world, and brings understanding, comfort, strength, perseverance, courage, inspiration, patience;
• They all have always been and always will be.

That is what we know; it leaves a lot we don’t know, but we can certainly be kept busy with what we do know. What we do know is that what we have must be enough for the here and now. It should enough for us to operate on His Word with our simple and limited understanding of the Trinity. We must be content with what we read in Scripture, all the other stuff we wonder about Him are just extraneous details, like how many angels can dance on the head of a pin? So much theological discussion is captured in that term. So, how many angels can dance on the head of a pin? Whatever the number, the answer from our standpoint is so very simple; As many as God determines the circumstances require. Note, as God requires! Not you, not me. God. Trying to think about those intricate details that we do not know or understand only serves as a distraction from following God and doing what He asks. He does not want us to speculate on how the Three in One concept works, but rather just understand it is and go forth and follow Him to the best of our abilities.

We must put aside the thoughts of who and what God is, and just understand He is I AM, there is God, there is the Son, there is the Holy Ghost and they all work together in their own way to be the one God of our faith. There is a reason for this even though we don’t know it, but it works out, so we do not have to wonder how it works, we just continue believing and acting! Why do we feel the need for details when Jesus just asks to believe, 2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:2-3)

You don’t need to know how may angels can dance on the head of the pin, just that a sufficient number can and will at the right time,

But, what of later? If we have eternal life, we have it now and later. What comes later? Heaven. What is heaven? In the epistle John attempts to describe to us what Heaven is like. He attempts to show us the majesty and glory of heaven using words. The picture he paints is intended to be awe inspiring and seems to meet that goal handily. The main thing we can be certain of is that we will not be disappointed. We speculate as to will this or that be in heaven? When we get there, the answer will manifest itself and you will have no regrets. John’s description should serve to tell us heaven will easily surpass all of our expectations. He is trying to convey Heaven is a destination truly worth our earthly toils. Heaven is the real world, where things are bright, not dull and dark as though looking through a glass. Rest assured, we will see for ourselves what it is like one day, all we need to know is that it is a really wonderful place we should be aiming to go to when we die, through our belief and actions here on earth working together!

As to the details of heaven, think about the angels dancing on the head of a pin. The only detail I can give you with complete certainty is you will not be disappointed, nothing will be lacking, there will be no disappointment.

So, how do we get to the real world from these Shadowlands? There is but one way, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the Propitiation for our sins.

Do not be fooled by “there are many paths to God” which seems to be the way of the world today, there is only one way into heaven. All roads do not lead to heaven. Many lead to the pit, but out of the many roads, there is only one narrow uphill path which will get you to heaven. Doing good is good, so to speak; doing good without God is not good enough. Only being accounted perfect will get you up the path and in the door.

One thing is clear, in order to traverse this narrow uphill trail we need help! Lots of help as a matter of fact. The first thing we need in our hearts is a new heart, a new and contrite heart. This is what Jesus was telling Nicodemus in the Gospel. He was explaining how we need a new heart in order to continue to serve God. The Pharisees could not or would not see that their hearts were not good enough on their own to serve Him, as ours are not if they are not regenerated. That is really hard, in fact, it is so hard it cannot be done by ourselves. We need something like turning over a new leaf so to speak. There is a way as a matter of fact for us to do this.

We must be born of the spirit! What spirit?

The Holy Ghost. We must accept we in and of ourselves will never be perfect. Our hearts as they are will not lead us towards God, but away from God unless we have the help of the Holy Ghost! No one gets in to heaven unless they are accounted as perfect. We will never be perfect in and of ourselves. Should we quit trying? No! We are commanded to follow our Christ. Will we fail? Without question. What is the solution? To believe and follow the Christ. To open our hearts to the Holy Ghost that we might believe in full and accept the help from the Christ that our imperfection needs to be His followers.

To follow God, we need Christ as our leader and the Holy Ghost as our compass. In short, we need all members of the Trinity’s influence in our lives if we are to arrive in the real world, that of Heaven.

There is but one way to heaven.

That easy to find, easy to follow, easy to hike path does not lead to the summit where eternal life in the real world awaits. Open your heart to the Holy Ghost; use His Power to follow our Lord to God who awaits in heaven.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail. The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow. The time has come, indeed. How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

Finding Trinity, Unity, and Faith

Trinity Sunday.
The Collect.

A
LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hast given unto us thy servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of the Divine Majesty to worship the Unity; We beseech thee that thou wouldest keep us stedfast in this faith, and evermore defend us from all adversities, who livest and reignest, one God, world without end. Amen.

I
N the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. (Isaiah 6:1-8)

This brief passage from the prophet Isaiah gives us a glimpse of what was in the holy temple in heaven. The prophet is seeing Christ in the temple next to God the Father.

T
HAT the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him. (John 12:38-41)

With a careful reading of the Word of God, the Bible, you will see an irrefutable connection between God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We, the creature, being limited by our physical nature, do not understand the divine or spiritual nature of the Trinity; our Creator.

Over and over again, during Christ ministry on earth, he made the clear distinction that he and God the Father were the same, and yet they were distinctly different. ‘Three in One, One in Three.’ If you see me, you see the Father,…I and the Father are one,… I AM (spoken at the synagogue at Canaan) causing the crowd to seek Christ’s death.

Trinity Season is the longest of the church calendar, it covers the months of May through November, or June through December, with very few holy days during that time. There are a few saints’ days, the original apostles are recognized, Saint Michael, All Saints, but for the most part a time of quiet reflection. Two theories as to the length of Trinity season.

1. It was during the busiest time of the agricultural cycle; cultivating, tilling, weeding, early harvest, middle harvest, and grand harvest all fell within this period of the church calendar; thus the need to not take time away from the fields.

2. This was a period of time where the church family could learn many of the lessons of the Bible, creation, redemption, the life of Christ and his earthly ministry, much of the lessons of his parables.

Either theory is ok, in that we are taking time to learn of the life and ministry of Christ the Redeemer.

Each day and each Sunday during the Trinity Season, let us take time to learn, to read, to pray, to inwardly digest the Word of God. To know that He is God, that He is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, all to our edification and understanding of what He has in store for us in our lives here on earth.

This is a good time to study the Creed of St. Athanasius, found on page 27 in the International Version of the Book of Common Prayer. This creed is not in the 1928 BCP. This may be due to the very clear concept of final deposition of those who have died. In the last part of the creed you will find expressed of what happens to those who are not believers. This caused controversy in the English church in the late 1800s, which flowed over to the American Episcopal church. This controversy, based on Biblical principles, seems to be the main reason the Athanasian Creed was removed or relegated to a minor position in more modern prayer books. Over all the Athanasian Creed expresses the concept of the Trinity in the clearest way, making it the most important creed for a people who believe in a Trinitarian God.

Let us pray:

W
E humbly beseech thee, O Father, mercifully to look upon our infirmities; and, for the glory of thy Name, turn from us all those evils that we most justly have deserved; and grant, that in all our troubles we may put our whole trust and confidence in thy mercy, and evermore serve thee in holiness and pureness of living, to thy honour and glory; through our only Mediator and Advocate, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O
GOD, whose nature and property is ever to have mercy and to forgive; Receive our humble petitions; and though we be tied and bound with the chain of our sins, yet let the pitifulness of thy great mercy loose us; for the honour of Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

T
HE Lord bless us, and keep us. The Lord make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and evermore. Amen.

T
HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon
We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon. If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth. This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Trinity Sunday

In the Epistle, the Book of Revelation tells us those present in the throne room in heaven worshiped the Lord saying, Thou are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory, and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are, and were created (4:11). This should hearken us back to the first chapter of Genesis wherein is found the creation account that begins with the statement, In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth (1:1).

Our LORD is a great and wonderful God who possesses a Triune nature in the personages of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. These are not modes which he uses as some believe. The modalists envision God the Son only taking on the attributes of the Father and the Holy Spirit as if donning a garment or robe for that purpose but always he is the Christ. That is not what the Bible teaches. The Nicene Creed expresses this tri-unity of God— or Trinity— in the following manner: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in all things visible and invisible: and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; begotten not made; being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made… And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified.

When we are asked about our shared Christian faith, the true and faithful Christian can utilize the words of the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds to explain that which is a mystery in any real sense. As professor Griffith Thomas once observed, ‘… creeds are not so much what we are to believe as what we do believe on the doctrines included… They are intended to lead up to personal reliance, and the intellectual statement of truth is only a guide to the simple yet perfect trust of the soul in God.’ And in a preceding comment he said, ‘A creed [is] a landmark, not a goal, a term of communion rather than a statement of truth in its entirety.’

Probably the best passages of Scripture to affirm this understanding of God is found in Matthew 28:19 wherein our Lord said, Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Here we have our Saviour clearly identifying whom we are to worship. It expresses the personages of the Godhead as truth and that believers are to be baptized using this formula.

Throughout the gospel accounts we are supplied passages concerning the nature of the Godhead. In Matthew 1:18-25, we are told that our Lord’s first advent was meant to fulfil the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14 wherein it was written that, …a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us (v.23). St. Matthew 1:18 tells us that our Lord was conceived by the Holy Ghost. And in Luke’s gospel account, we are supplied more details (1:26-38). Mary was approached by an angel of the Lord who announced her selection to bear the Messiah. The angel greeted her with the favor of God (the Father) and that she would conceive and bear of the Holy Ghost the Son of God whom she would name JESUS. Again, we have the elements of the creeds set forth in those passages from Luke’s gospel account.

In Matthew 3: 1-17, we have these same elements mentioned with regarding our Lord’s baptism by John the Baptist. Just prior to our Lord’s arrival, John warned the Pharisees and Sadducees saying, And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham (v.9). These men understood God to be their heavenly Father even as Abraham was their earthly father. In Isaiah 9:6- 7 such is clearly expressed: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, the everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. Look again at the passage. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given. Who pray tell might that be? Is it not Jesus the Son of the living God? and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, the everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. The elemental name Wonderful fits the totality of the Godhead as well as its individual members. The title of Counsellor speaks of the Holy Ghost who guides us into all truth. The mighty God is also a universal attribute of the Godhead for he is able to do all things. The everlasting Father is plain enough for even the rudest skeptic as is the last descriptor: The Prince of Peace.

While the Pharisees and Sadducees may not have closely examined the aforementioned points from Isaiah 9:6-7, they nevertheless were subject to them as are all who dwell upon the earth. God will judge everyone by his word and no one can avoid these particulars because, as the apostle Paul has noted in his epistle to the Romans (1:18-20), …Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.

So when John the Baptist spoke as he did to the Pharisees and Sadducees (Matthew 3:8-12), he was not communicating something foreign to their understanding. They were well aware of what John meant. They simply chose not to believe his witness. The one he described as being, mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire was none other than the very Son of God whom they, for the most part, would later reject to the detriment of their immortal souls.

We are then told that Jesus came and was baptized of John and that the Holy Spirit descended like a dove and lighted upon him as he came up out of the water, and was followed by a voice from heaven which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased (vv. 13-17).

Our Lord Jesus Christ made numerous references to God the Father as noted in the gospel accounts. He taught his hearers to pray the Lord’s Prayer. He instructed the disciples to speak what the Spirit of your Father… speaketh in you (St. Matthew 10:19-20). He also told them in the same chapter that, Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven (v.32).

In John 14-16 we have our Lord’s instructions to the twelve concerning the coming of the Holy Ghost. He reminded them of the unity of the natures when he said, Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me… (14:11). Herein do we find further confirmation of the unity and the individuality of the Godhead. Unity in mind and individuality as to the personages of the Godhead.

There are other passages to be sure, but what we have examined today is congruent with the principles of our Christian faith as found in the New Testament. God has given us his word written to illuminate our minds and comfort our souls. He has imparted to us a witness concerning his nature and being. He has set it all down on paper via his inspired penmen who wrote as were moved by the Holy Ghost. For it is the Third Person of the Trinity whom the Father and the Son have sent to comfort, keep and guide us into the strait gate and narrow way of Christ. (Also see I John 5:7-10).

Our God is gracious and loving beyond our understanding of those words. He has prepared a kingdom which as the Bible tells is of indescribable wonder and beauty. God has made all things and desires that all people would come and be welcomed of him there. But in order to be received, you must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as God’s only begotten Son. In order to be accepted, you must reject the current world system dominated by Satan and his minions. In order to be saved, you must confess your sins and trespasses to the Father in the name of Christ our Lord who was once offered for our sins on Calvary’s cross. And you must be an obedient and faithful servant by endeavoring daily to keep God’s word and commandments. If you will do these things, you will come to know God as he knows you.

God has set before us in plain language who he is, the question then is will you accept his word and embrace him as the Lord of all your life? Will you accept him as Father, Son and Holy Ghost? Will you accept him as your Saviour, Redeemer and Friend? That is my prayer for each of you.

Let us pray,

O
GRACIOUS and loving God, whose only begotten Son has paid our sin-debt with his blood; accept our prayer of confession that we may be made right with you, being saved from judgment and everlasting death so that hereafter, we may be made fit members of thine everlasting kingdom; and these things we ask in the name of Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Ghost art ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Have a blessed week,

Bryan+

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?
No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells

While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.

The most common cause of death related to multiple myeloma is infection, with pneumonia being the most common fatal infection. Other common causes of death are bleeding (from low platelet counts), complications of bone fractures, kidney failure, and blood clots in the lungs.

I tried to walk after they got me up and was able to use the hand rail and walk about a hundred feet there were two aids behind me I had to stop and nearly collapsed. They kept me from going down. After all the tests were done the Nurse practitioner reviewed over the results. I had one valve replaced about 6 months ago. But now the other 3 are leaking, there is not much they can do for me.

Yesterday I prayed that if God didn’t need me here. to take me home. I long to be free of this old body and to see my Lord, my family and friends that have gone on to their rewards, to be with them evermore. I told the Lord if he needs me here then he needs to renew my strength so that I can walk.

I woke up this morning and felt good. I got up to go to the bathroom and to my surprise I did not struggle to stand up!!! I actually walked to the bathroom without a walker. I am back in bed crying as I write this to you as the Holy Spirit brought to my mind Isaiah 40:31 ..Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength and shall soar on wings like eagles they will run and not grow weary they shall walk and not faint.

I have been unable to walk more than 100 ft or so, for the last six months in the last two weeks my oxygen saturation was as low as 74 and unable to walk without a walker. have a lift chair-recliner in the TV room. I am now able to get up without it.!!!

My God is an awesome God he has heard my prayers and has indeed strengthened me.!!!

Columbiq
I am writing to request your prayers for Colombia, my country. At this moment frightful things are happening, a great diabolical shadow is cast over this nation.

1. The Constitutional Court in a tyrannical way has decriminalized the crime of abortion in Colombia, even up to six months. This is an illegitimate process, the court is legislating, something that is not within the competence of the judges, on the other hand the issue of abortion was a cause judged in 2006, which is why it should not be judged again in 2022. But socialist groups, international elites, social engineers and feminist groups have not given up on the issue. They want to traffic in death.

2. The candidate of the extreme left Gustavo Petro is close to become the president of Colombia, this is a man who in his youth was a guerrilla criminal, a vile and despicable man who has always served the interests of drug trafficking, he was an advisor to Chavez who implanted Communism in Venezuela, his second home is Communist Cuba.

3. The same court approved the movement of Gustavo Petro called: “la Colombia Humana”, it gave him the status of a political party, with this, he has the possibility of getting to introduce at least 15 congressmen, basically he is close to kidnapping all the powers, he already has the judicial power in his pocket, he only lacks the executive and the legislative. We are close to the precipice, we trust in a miracle of God.

We hope you support us with your prayers, I will ask the brothers to pray unceasingly so that in his mercy we will be saved from these perverse men. God bless you and keep you in all things.

Your servant in Christ,

Bishop José Antonio Rios

For Our Country
Our country has lost its way. Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take. Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them. Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God. Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down. Down, into the depths of the pit. Pray people will recognize there is:

• One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
• All religions are not equal;
• All ways of life are not equal;
• The Bible holds the Key to Life;
• All rights come from God, not the State;
• Good;
• Bad;
• Evil;
• Right;
• Wrong;
• Allah is the Devil;
• Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late. Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted
Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India. Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy. Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.
