Sunday Report

Every Fourth of July, we celebrate Independence Day in the United States of America. Tomorrow, 4 July 2022, Anno Domini which marked 246 years since the establishment of this country on the solid foundation of Divine Providence. That would be God.

There is a marked tendency to think of the Fourth of July as just another holiday, perhaps special because of the fireworks. It is not. This day marks the establishment of the only successful Republic the world has ever seen. It is a special country with special relationship with God. It is not that God is on our side, but rather we are on God’s side. If we lose that relationship, we lose the special nature of our country.

We trust you and your families will have the very best Independence Day. While you are enjoying the day, please take the time remember the terrible cost of our freedom and those who paid it for us.

I commend to you the Independence Day message from our Presiding Bishop Jerry L. Ogles:

T
HE Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound. (Isaiah 61:1)

In the midst of perilous times, I believe it incumbent upon our people to examine themselves as a nation and as a people in the face of grievous abuses against the Perfect Law of Liberty and the natural order that the God of Nature has instilled into His Creation. If these times are not most perilous to the Christian principles upon which our nation was founded, I would be at a loss to imagine what would describe our present age and predicament more suitably.

Looking to our common society and character as Americans in the same nation founded by our patriotic Founders, how do we in our present age measure up? Are we the same Americans that braved the ocean deep to come and establish a home in a land hitherto unsettled and uncultivated amidst unfriendly natives, scarce resources, and unknown customs? Are we the same Americans who fought, under overwhelming odds, a great land, and greater sea, power to gain our freedoms of speech, religion, and self-determination – and won that war?

Are we the same rugged Americans who carved out a nation from the wilderness and fought our bloodiest war between brothers and thereby established a stronger Union? Are we the same young Americans who fought, bled, and died in the trenches of World War One to make the world safe for democracy; or braved the fierce enemies of the European and Pacific Theaters of Operation during World War Two to prevent the enslavement of whole nations to totalitarian dictatorships? Are we the same Marines who slogged through the ice and snow of the Chosin Reservoir of Korea in defense of a people whose language and customs were alien to our own?

My friends. Is our American society the same that just half a century ago valued the handshake of an honest citizen to be of more worth than a signed contract today; a people who would neither countenance nor tolerate perversion of our youth or the intentional deprivation of our rights and liberties granted by God and enshrined in our Founding Documents – the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution?

I venture to say that we are NOT those same Americans. In all our great wars and battles of the past, the blood of the entire nation was offered as security to stand against any invader. It is not so today. We have a paid volunteer military whose blood we offer on the altar of freedom in lieu of our own. Though that military is dedicated and patriotic, it is no substitute for an entire nation whose sacrifices are all presented on behalf of the defense of freedom. Even our youth are being taught, with impunity, to hate our nation, themselves, and all the principles that underlie the foundation stones of this great nation that is unsurpassed in the annals of history for its blessings granted by the Providence of God.

It is time the American people reawaken to the true values of freedom and liberty, take uncompromising pride in our flag and Founding documents, and restore the memory of our great men, women, and institutions of the American Republic to the public forum and our schools. A beneficent God will favor our undertakings that reciprocate His blessings on this land – One Nation, under God, with Liberty and Justice for All. If we fail, how will our Maker respond? “But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids. Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. Today was the Third Sunday after Trinity, the third real Green Sunday in the Endless Green Season.

On Point
Someone asked, where do the quotes come from? The answer is from the people who uttered them. But, how did you find them? Oh, that. Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, some from Rev Geordie Menzies-Grierson, but overall mostly from Bryan. He always has some great ones to share. On to the On Point quotes –

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off. Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

The Propers for today are found on Page 192-193, with the Collect first:

Third Sunday after Trinity.
The Collect.

O
LORD, we beseech thee mercifully to hear us; and grant that we, to whom thou hast given an hearty desire to pray, may, by thy mighty aid, be defended and comforted in all dangers and adversities; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle came from Saint Peter‘s First General Epistle, the Fifth Chapter, beginning at the Fifth Verse. Peter tells us to not be proud of what we have been given, rather to use those gifts to the benefit of those around us. We should ask God to carry our concerns and worries so that we might to the tasks set before us.

We must pay attention to the world around us and take care not to fall prey to the devil, for he is constantly looking for ways to help us drift off our path towards heaven. You must understand that other Christians come from the same pool you do, humanity, they have the same frailties and problems you do. Hang in there and do your very best, God will take care of you in the end. There are none so poor as cannot purchase a noble death; never forget that. Trust in God and dread naught.

A
LL of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Today’s Gospel started in the Fifteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the First Verse. This is a story of Jesus, rather than one of his stories. The Pharisees were appalled that those who were particularly sinners in their very qualified eyes were attracted to Jesus and even worse, he talked to them, even breaking bread with them. To the Pharisees, Jesus told the story of the shepherd who loses a sheep and searches for it. When he finds it he carries it back to the flock on his shoulders. He goes on to tell the story of the woman who loses a piece of silver and turns her house inside out to find it. That story ends in a very interesting word play in English, “Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece (peace) which I had lost.” Jesus ends the story with, “there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” Having said that, there is also joy when we do not sin, but choose God’s way. And we enjoy it more also.

T
HEN drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. And he spake this parable unto them saying, What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

For Our Country.
A
LMIGHTY God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favour and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honourable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogancy, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Perfect Law of Liberty
Every Day is Independence Day to the true Christian

The Declaration of Independence
We hold these truths to be self-evident (like the truth of the law of gravity)…that all men are created equal (made equal in the eyes of God at birth, but not condemned to remain equal in labor or business), endowed by creator with certain unalienable rights – that among these rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness…..that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…

Some quotes at the Signing –

When Samuel Adams signed the Declaration, he said:
We have this day restored the Sovereign to whom all men ought to be obedient. He reigns in heaven and from the rising to the setting of the sun, let His kingdom come.

John Adams said:
I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.

I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost to maintain this Declaration…Yet through all the gloom I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory…Posterity will triumph in that day’s transaction, even though we should rue it, which I trust in God, we shall not.

Declare Liberty – the Liberty Bell:
After our founding fathers approved the Declaration of Independence, there was a call to have it read publicly, to fire cannons and to ring the bells in celebration! The first bell they rang was in the hall where they approved the Declaration to summon the people to hear the first public reading of America’s founding document. They rang the Liberty Bell. Where did it get its name? From the Scripture imprinted years earlier on its rim, Leviticus 25:10, which says, Proclaim liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof! Proclaim liberty throughout the land. Let freedom ring!

It certainly does not seem realistic our Framers of the US Constitution intended the restraint of the Christian religion as modern so-called Justices seem to believe, does it?

The Flag & Colors –
Charles W. Stewart, superintendent of naval records and library of the United States Navy Department, made the following observations in the Geographic, concerning the origin of the colours used in the national flag of America:

The flag may trace its ancestry back to Mount Sinai, whence the Lord gave to Moses the Ten Commandments and the Book of the Law, which testify of God’s will and man’s duty; and were deposited in the Ark of the Covenant within the Tabernacle, whose curtains were blue, purple, scarlet, and fine-twined linen.

Before the ark stood the table of shewbread, with its cloth of blue, scarlet and white. These colours of the Hebrew Tabernacle were taken over by the early Western Church for its own and given to all the nations of western Europe for their flags. When the United States chose their flag it was of the colours of old, but new in arrangement and design, and they called it ‘The Stars and Stripes.’

Our flag is of the colours red, white and blue. Red is for courage, zeal, and fervency; white is for purity, cleanness of life and rectitude of conduct; blue is for loyalty, devotion, friendship, justice and truth. The star represents a heavenly ownership…the stars of heaven, the Bright and morning Star – Dominion. (See Exodus 25:4; 26:1, 36; and Numbers 4:7.)

But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. (James 1:25)

The Perfect Law.
Let me remind you how, in every revelation of Divine truth contained in the Gospel, there is a direct moral and practical bearing. No word of the New Testament is given us in order that we may simply know truth, but all in order that we may do it.

This truth is illustrated below. Having liberty as a blessing to ourselves, we owe that truth our hearts and lives –

And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts. (Psalm 119:45)

We have, as Christians, the responsibility to walk at liberty, not being shackled by the former chains of sin.

We cannot be free apart from Christ. Christ came for the purpose of making us free and proclaiming Liberty!

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; (Isaiah 61:1)

We have a heavenly responsibility to proclaim the Liberty whereby we were set free, both as individuals and as a nation:

Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. (Jer 34:17)

The Spirit of the Lord brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the sick. (Luke 4:18-19)

What made us free?

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:2)

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. (2 Corinthians 3:17)

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. (Galatians 5:1)

So do not abuse our privilege under liberty. Do not return to the falling walls of Babylon and the flesh of the heart.

For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

We are to comport ourselves as a free people and not as those living under despots such as in China, fearfully looking about to know if we are being watched.

So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. (James 2:12)

But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. 11 Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord. 12 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption; 13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you; 14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: 15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; 16 But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man’s voice forbad the madness of the prophet. 17 These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. 18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. 19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. 20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. 22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog isturned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. (2 Peter 2:10)

On Independence Day, Americans should give thanks to the Author of liberty that we have been privileged to live in this “sweet land of liberty,” where we can worship God freely, in accord with His Word. Liberty is not license, however, and the essence of the American system is liberty under law. Fundamentally, that law is “the law of nature and of nature’s God”–the natural laws of God’s world and the revealed laws of God’s Word. Within that framework we do have liberty–but not liberty to defy either the physical law of gravity or the spiritual “law of liberty.” The latter is formulated in Scripture and has been applied over the centuries, in the English common law and later in our system of constitutional law, both of which are based on Scripture.

Some today, seeking license rather than liberty, might recoil at the very idea of “the law of liberty,” calling it an “oxymoron,” or contradiction in terms. But Jesus said that only “the truth shall make you free!” (John 8:32). “Sin is the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4), and “sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James 1:15), not freedom!

No one can be saved by the law, but those who are saved–by grace through faith in Christ–will love God’s law, for it is “holy, and just, and good” (Romans 7:12). We should say with the psalmist: “So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever. And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts” (Psalm 119:44-45).

There is, indeed, a law of liberty, and whoever will walk in real liberty will find it only in God’s law of life, through His revealed Word. For “whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed” (James 1:25).

Hierarchy of Laws
We are to obey the laws of the land…unless those laws contradict the law of God. We obey the law of righteousness and not the law of fleshly desire.

Whose law do you keep? Your eternal destiny depends upon your answer.

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold – Time and Action
Church of the Faithful Centurion – Descanso, California
Today’s sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

Consider these words from the Collect:

… hear us; and grant that we, to whom thou hast given an hearty desire to pray, may, by thy mighty aid, be defended and comforted in all dangers and adversities …

The Collect starts as they often do by asking God to hear us. It seems to me this is rather odd a thing to ask as He hears us all the time; the problem is when we need His Help we so rarely ask, then when He answers, we will not hear Him. That being said, when we do accept the Holy Ghost’s Help to pray, we can expect to receive spiritual, mental and physical comfort from God. The key word in this is accept. In order to receive the comfort from God, we have to first let him into our hearts to begin his renewal of our spirit. If we do not accept the Holy Ghost’s help, then God will not be able to help us.

It would be foolish not to accept the Great Physician’s help to transform our spirits. It would be like having cancer, and there being a cure for cancer and rejecting that cure because we don’t like it. Without the help of the Holy Ghost into our hearts, we truly cannot follow Christ. We, of ourselves, cannot follow God without His Divine Assistance. We are sheep gone astray from our shepherd and without Jesus, are wolf food. But with Jesus’s protection, we are safe from the wolf/lion known as Satan.

In order to have the Holy Ghost’s help into our heart, we must let go of self centered and prideful ways. Prideful beings cannot be followers of Christ. Peter makes this point when he says that God resists the proud and gives His Grace to the humble. The humble are those who are more likely to accept His Grace and the Holy Ghost’s help to renew their spirit. The proud believe they are self-made people and scoff at the very idea of God sending his only begotten Son that we should not perish but have life everlasting (John 3:16). These people are very resistant to God and the Holy Spirit. These are the people that scoff at us and do not understand the benefits of the power of God and the Holy Spirit. They will continually be living in their own delusion unless they are otherwise shaken from it. And this is an extremely powerful delusion and it is difficult for these folks to be shaken from it. It is possible, but it does require that they allow the Holy Spirit in them, in order to be snapped out of the delusion. They do not understand that our self centered and prideful ways hurt us way more than it can ever help.

The humble know they cannot make it into heaven on their own; thus they know they need that divine help and are willing to accept it. They know that without God’s help they are nothing and thus they are more willing than the proud to rely on God.

We must strive to be humble in our lives and less prideful. When we let go of our pride, we can see where we are in error. This is a life long process for most of us. It is a very difficult thing to let go of our pride, but it is something that must be done to further our character development all the same. Next time you are thinking prideful thoughts, stop and try and switch to a more humble attitude. In life, being humble will get you a lot farther than being prideful ever will.

When we accept help from the Holy Ghost, we can begin to fix the cracks and faults in our spiritual character. He can shine a light into the darkest areas of our hearts. Jesus could do this as well and He knew very well the spiritual character of each person He encountered in His Earthly Ministry. He knows which areas we need to most work on and He will tell us. We just have to listen to Him and then act upon it. Listening and then acting is the key phrase here. Without listening we’ll never know what we need to change and without acting we will never be able to change. So we must listen to what He has to say, regardless of how we feel about it and then act

With a clear view of the inner most thoughts of their hearts, Jesus tells the Pharisees the story of the shepherd who loses a sheep and searches for it. When he finds the sheep he carries it back to the flock on his shoulders. He goes on to tell the story of the woman who loses a piece of silver and turns her house inside out to find it. That story ends in a very interesting word play in English, “Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece (peace) which I had lost.” Jesus ends the story with, “there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” No doubt the Pharisees missed the point of the parable as their hearts were too blackened by pride to hear His Word.

The moral of the parable is Jesus is all about saving the sinners, not those who are already “righteous.” But for realists, there are none who are already “righteous.” I liken the church as a hospital for sinners. And all of the saints were sinners in their past too. Therefore Jesus is all about saving all of us, as none of us are truly righteous without His Influence in our lives. Having said that, there is also joy when we do not sin, but choose God’s way. And we enjoy it more also. So, it is preferable if we do not sin in the first place, but if we can’t do that, then God finds joy when we truly repent and turn back to Him and ask for His help and be willing to listen. There are no holier than thous in Christ’s flock, we are all equally non perfect folk or sinners that have let the Holy Ghost into our hearts to inspire us to change and become better humans and children of God.

Notice Jesus’ actions when He finds a lost sheep, He carries it back to the flock on His shoulders with a smile on His face. He rejoices in each lost soul saved. This is what the Church is about, bringing lost souls to Our Shepherd of Souls, Our Savior, Our Advocate, Jesus Christ, to His Kingdom of Heavenly Joys.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail. The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow. The time has come, indeed. How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Third Sunday after Trinity
3 July 2022
1 Peter. 5: 5-11 • Luke 15:1-10Humility

Amen.

The Epistle
1 Peter. 5: 5-11.

A
LL of you be subject one to another, and. be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

In the simplest sense when we read the Epistle today there really isn’t a mystery to the words.

We are to humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand. He will exalt you in due time. He gives grace to the humble and resists the proud. And most especially we are to cast our care upon him. Why? Because he cares for you.

Reading the words you see a certain construct and lay-out in how the words are put in order.

When you move from giving up your cares or casting them on God, then you are to be sober, vigilant; why?

Because the devil, your adversary, is roaring about as a lion seeking whom he may devour. So, vigilance and sobriety is to give us a steadfastness in the faith. And we are not going through this alone. If we are on God’s side we are able to withstand the wiles of the devil. Our fellow believers around the world are suffering the same afflictions, some even worse…unto death. And yet they remain faithful to the end.

Now comes the most beautiful part of this passage of scripture: But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, established, strengthened, settle you.

He will care for you because of Jesus. He will carry our cares and burdens, he will sustain us, strengthen us and settle us. In other words he will give you peace in your afflictions.
And the final and most important aspect of this study; the ascription. To him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

And he spake this parable unto them, saying, What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and. go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle. and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

In the simple reading of the Gospel, we find that God deals with us as individuals, not as a number or an unknown. In both parables Jesus puts the emphasis on the one lost; whether it be the sheep or the silver piece that is missing. That one is most important in the quest to find it and save it. Wow, pretty impressive. The Creator God of the World cares for us so much that He searches for us until we are found. He cares so much for us He sends His only begotten Son to come and save us by His death on the Cross. Pretty heady stuff, I’d say.

In both stories, once the lost has been found, the searcher (Jesus) calls everyone to come celebrate and rejoice. And to make his point at the end of each parable Jesus makes clear that the one who was lost, now being found causes joy in heaven.

Notice that he makes it clear the lost sheep or piece of silver is compared to one (that theme again) sinner who has repented .

Notice something else about these two parables ? The shepherd and the woman both seek that which is lost, until they find it……they don’t give up. Then and only after finding that which was lost do they call for rejoicing.

A famous author who in his youth was a non-believer, wrote that he could not get away from the Hound of Heaven. God kept pursuing him until he finally gave up and came to the Lord finding the salvation that he so desperately needed and yet so foolishly kept running from.

God wants every sinner to repent and turn from their wicked ways. He will not stop until he has found you and brought you to the Cross. If you have been trying to run from God, stop, turn around and be saved. The angels in heaven will rejoice when you come to the Lord.

Let us pray:

A
LMIGHTY God, the fountain of all wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask, and our ignorance in asking; We beseech thee to have compassion upon our infirmities; and those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, vouchsafe to give us, for the worthiness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O
FATHER of mercies and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need; We humbly beseech thee to behold, visit, and relieve thy sick servant [Name] for whom our prayers are desired. Look upon him with the eyes of thy mercy; comfort him with a sense of thy goodness; preserve him from the temptations of the enemy; and give him patience under his affliction. In thy good time, restore him to health, and enable him to lead the residue of his life in thy fear, and to thy glory; and grant that finally he may dwell with thee in life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O
ETERNAL God, through whose mighty power our fathers won their liberties of old; Help us to be ever mindful of the great sacrifices that were made to secure our independence and liberties. Give us a thankful heart on this day of our nation’s birth; Grant, we beseech thee, that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain these liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

T
HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon
We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon. If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth. This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Third Sunday after Trinity

Acts 8:5-25

T
HEN Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. 6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city. 9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: 10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. 11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. 20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. 21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. 23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. 24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. 25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

The Book of Acts contains several caveats for all who would seek positions within the ministry of our Lord. At the outset, we were introduced to a man named Simon who, beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: to whom they all gave heed… saying, This man is the great power of God (vv.9- 10). Like Balaam the hireling prophet (Numbers 22-24), Simon no doubt had profited materially and professionally from his mumbo-jumbo until Philip the Evangelist arrived. We were then informed that, when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized… (v.12). And it seems that even Simon was also moved to accept Christ and was baptized, after which, he remained with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done (v.13).

Not long afterward, the apostles Peter and John travelled from Jerusalem to see what the Holy Spirit had wrought by the work of Philip and to pray for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (for as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) (vv.14-16). Upon arriving, the apostles, laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost (v.17). After witnessing the coming of the Holy Ghost to those who believed, Simon offered [the apostles] money, saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost (vv.18-19). Imagine, if you will, the horror and disgust which likely filled the apostles when they had heard such a request. Imagine also, how it was received in heaven by the LORD Almighty.

The reply given Simon was “short, sharp and to the point.” But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity (vv.20-23).

When we examine the case of Simon the Sorcerer, we find that his motivations for accepting Christ were based not on receiving salvation but upon self-service. He had hidden his true intentions from Philip, but not from the apostles. Consider the words of Rev. Matthew Henry on this subject: “Simon was ambitious to have the honour of an apostle, but not at all solicitous to have the spirit and disposition of a Christian. He was more desirous to gain honour to himself than to do good to others. Now, in making this motion, he put a great affront upon the apostles, as if they were mercenary men [who] would do any thing for money, and loved it as well as he did… He put a great affront upon Christianity, as if the miracles that were wrought for the proof of it were done by magic arts, only of a different nature from what he himself had practised formerly. He showed that, like Balaam, he aimed at the rewards of divination; for he would not have offered money for this power if he had not hoped to get money by it. He showed that he had a very high conceit of himself, and that he had never his heart truly humbled. Such a wretch as he had been before his baptism should have asked, like the prodigal, to be made as one of the hired servants. But, as soon as he is admitted into the family, no less a place will serve him than to be one of the stewards of the household, and to be entrusted with a power which Philip himself had not, but the apostles only.”

Today there are numerous examples of Simon the Sorcerer plying their wares as so-to-speak ministers of the gospel. One need only look about to see those whose ministries involve greed for gain; who preach and teach the doctrines of men rather than the whole counsel of God; who disdain the everyday callings to serve all the while seeking after those postings that will elevate their status among men.

Peter noted in his second epistle such persons have eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls; an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam… who loved the wages of unrighteousness… These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest: to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever (2:14-17). And the apostle further described such persons as, servants of corruption… For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them (vv.19-21).

Our Lord warned us to, Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits… Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit (Matthew 7:15-17). When you hear any minister claim that the word of God must be reinterpreted to meet the needs of a modern world watch out. Modern society is inundated with all the filth which the world, the flesh, and the devil can conjure up. The unfaithful minister will peddle his master’s wares as opposed to teaching and preaching against the wicked and their nefarious doctrines and behaviors. The false witness offers mankind a false gospel. Such a one may come in the finest clothing money can buy. Such a one may come using the cross as a prop, and the Bible as a lure, in order to fill up his or her synagogue of Satan. Simon the Sorcerer was content to hide behind his baptism and his feigned allegiance to Christ. Ergo, should we be surprised if the modern versions of such a man should do likewise? I think not!

The Bible contains any number of warnings so that regenerated souls in Christ may avoid being deceived and their faith overthrown. We must beware those things that have been set forth in Scripture as harmful to our overall spiritual well-being. The old saying of “not all that glitters is gold” is apropos. We must watch. We must be discerning. We must be Bereans. And, we must pray for guidance and strength in the Holy Ghost. Do not allow yourself to be taken in by those whose master is not the Good Shepherd but the Thief, the Murderer, and the father of Lies. Pray then for what is pure, wholesome and righteous in the sight of our Lord. Seek his will for you and avoid the unfruitful works of darkness.

Let us pray,

G
RACIOUS LORD, fill us with thy most holy Spirit; and grant us wisdom and courage to live in obedience to thy will and pleasure; for this we ask in the name of thy Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed week,

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?
No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We’d like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells

While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.

The most common cause of death related to multiple myeloma is infection, with pneumonia being the most common fatal infection. Other common causes of death are bleeding (from low platelet counts), complications of bone fractures, kidney failure, and blood clots in the lungs.

Michael Baran – End stage congestive heart failure. 20 March 20 at 10:56 AM To all my friends and family I had to go to the hospital in Rochester NY where I had my implant mechanical heart assist pump placed in my abdomen. I have end stage heart failure. On Wednesday I had to go to the hospital I was in need of a wheelchair I was very weak and I needed to have someone push me because I got short of breath, and I was so weak, I needed assistance to get up out of the wheelchair. I had to do a walk test and I had to have help to stand up my blood pressure was so low. I fell back In to the wheel chair. I tried to walk after they got me up and was able to use the hand rail and walk about a hundred feet there were two aids behind me I had to stop and nearly collapsed. They kept me from going down. After all the tests were done the Nurse practitioner reviewed over the results. I had one valve replaced about 6 months ago. But now the other 3 are leaking, there is not much they can do for me.

Yesterday I prayed that if God didn’t need me here. to take me home. I long to be free of this old body and to see my Lord, my family and friends that have gone on to their rewards, to be with them evermore. I told the Lord if he needs me here then he needs to renew my strength so that I can walk.

I woke up this morning and felt good. I got up to go to the bathroom and to my surprise I did not struggle to stand up!!! I actually walked to the bathroom without a walker. I am back in bed crying as I write this to you as the Holy Spirit brought to my mind Isaiah 40:31 ..Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength and shall soar on wings like eagles they will run and not grow weary they shall walk and not faint.

Philippines
We are generally doing good, except that all boundary checkpoint out were tightened again due to the DELTA VARIANT entered the city. On the other side, our members in Tulodan are now experiencing famine due to the effect of the recent continues heavy rains during the month of July to early August which completely destroyed their vegetable plantation.
Bishop Anthony Pangsiw

Diocese of the Epiphany
Saint Paul’s Moberly, Missouri would like your prayers that the Holy Ghost might enter more fully into their hearts so that they might be more effective in spreading the Word of God.

Diocese of Virginia
Saint Joseph of Arimathea Anglican Orthodox Church is under a lot of stress. We all are, but they need even more prayer. Rev Roger Jessup, their wonderful minister, had to retire as he was so pressed by the duties of a primary care giver, in addition to all the worries of this world. Pray for trust in God for each member of the parish and for them to find economic relief.

Columbiq
I am writing to request your prayers for Colombia, my country. At this moment frightful things are happening, a great diabolical shadow is cast over this nation.

1. The Constitutional Court in a tyrannical way has decriminalized the crime of abortion in Colombia, even up to six months. This is an illegitimate process, the court is legislating, something that is not within the competence of the judges, on the other hand the issue of abortion was a cause judged in 2006, which is why it should not be judged again in 2022. But socialist groups, international elites, social engineers and feminist groups have not given up on the issue. They want to traffic in death.

2. The candidate of the extreme left Gustavo Petro is close to become the president of Colombia, this is a man who in his youth was a guerrilla criminal, a vile and despicable man who has always served the interests of drug trafficking, he was an advisor to Chavez who implanted Communism in Venezuela, his second home is Communist Cuba.

3. The same court approved the movement of Gustavo Petro called: “la Colombia Humana”, it gave him the status of a political party, with this, he has the possibility of getting to introduce at least 15 congressmen, basically he is close to kidnapping all the powers, he already has the judicial power in his pocket, he only lacks the executive and the legislative. We are close to the precipice, we trust in a miracle of God.

We hope you support us with your prayers, I will ask the brothers to pray unceasingly so that in his mercy we will be saved from these perverse men. God bless you and keep you in all things.

Your servant in Christ,

Bishop José Antonio Rios

For Our Country
Our country has lost its way. Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take. Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them. Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God. Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down. Down, into the depths of the pit. Pray people will recognize there is:

• One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
• All religions are not equal;
• All ways of life are not equal;
• The Bible holds the Key to Life;
• All rights come from God, not the State;
• Good;
• Bad;
• Evil;
• Right;
• Wrong;
• Allah is the Devil;
• Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late. Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted
Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India. Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy. Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.
