Fourth Sunday in Lent Sunday Report

Today was the Fourth Sunday in Lent.

From the Administrative Region of Europe and Africa

This weekend Worldwide Presiding Bishop Jerry Ogles and Director of Education and Training Bishop Jack Arnold traveled to Madrid, Spain, where they were met by the Administrative Director of Europe and Africa, who is also the Presiding Bishop of the Anglican Orthodox Church of Serbia Bishop Igor Djurcik. The three came together to consecrate Rev Yves Merå, as Presiding Bishop of the Anglican Orthodox Church of France and Rev Claudio R. de la Jara as Presiding Bishop of the Anglican orthodox Church of Spain.

This was a very quick and grueling trip for each of them.  They traveled to meet in Madrid on Friday and are leaving tomorrow on Monday. There will be a full account in next week’s AOC Sunday Report.  The executive summary is we have two excellent men as bishops in France and Spain. We are blessed to have them and their families on board as well as their national churches.

On Point

Someone asked, where do the quotes come from?  The answer is from the people who uttered them.  But, how did you find them?  Oh, that.  Some from Bishop Jerry, many from Rev Bryan Dabney, a few from other places, but overall mostly from Bryan.  He always has some great ones to share.  On to the On Point quotes –

The best way for most of us is to fast from our sins and to eat what is good for us.

Americanism

Without God there could be no American form of government, nor an American way of life. Recognition of the Supreme Being is the first, the most basic, expression of Americanism. Thus, the founding fathers of America saw it, and thus with God’s help, it will continue to be.

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Leadership

For this is what it means to be a king: to be first in every desperate attack and last in every desperate retreat, and when there’s hunger in the land (as must be now and then in bad years) to wear finer clothes and laugh louder over a scantier meal than any man in your land.

Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.

Matthew 8:22

Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.

Luke 17:3

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

John 5:39-40

The standard of the world, and the standard of the Lord Jesus—are indeed widely different. They are more than different—they are flatly contradictory one to the other. Never be satisfied with the world’s standard of Christianity!

To maintain your Christian course, you must truly turn a new leaf, and not slip back into the old man. This is one of the most difficult challenges as a Christian, but with the help of the Holy Ghost, we each can do it. You must receive the Word, hear it, and act upon it and spread it joyously to others, in order for your faith to have any meaning at all… It is not a gift to selfishly lock up, but to share… That is the true joy of the Good News. It is most certainly more blessed to give than to receive in this case… Will you slip? Without doubt… Life is a continuous learning process. Indeed, if you are a Christian that is what you must do. We will always slip up in our lives, that is in our fallen nature. But we have to get up and get back on track, using the Holy Gospel to guide us like the instruments in an aircraft. We cannot trust our feeling, but only our instruments (God’s gift of Holy Scripture). You are called to believe and act on those beliefs to the best of your ability. If you do not, then prepared as you were for life, you will so be prepared for the pit. As you read Luke, remember the second half of the Book of Luke is The ACTS of the Apostles, not thoughts, wishes, prayers or meditations. For, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.

The Anglican Church, being founded on the principal of one nation, one church, holds patriotism and true love of country in great regard.  It is quite interesting the majority of the Founding Fathers were members of the Church of England and transferred their national church identity to what became the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States.  Like Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, they saw the need for a national church.  Not a captive arm of the government, but a link to God for the people of the nation.

The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles, or letters, in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service in our church is read by the minister or in the case of Morning or Evening Prayer without a minister by the senior member present.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead, except in a White Season, where it is put off.  Red Letter Feasts, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days.  Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events.  Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent or Lent.

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ This Collect is to be said every day in Lent, after the Collect appointed for the day, until Palm Sunday.

The Epistle for today came from Paul’s letter to the Galatians, the Fourth Chapter, beginning at the Twenty-First Verse.

Paul talks about the two sons of Abraham, one of the bond, one of the free.  These two, the bond under The Law and the free under The New Covenant.  The people of old are the people of The Law, 613 laws by which they must abide.  Perhaps more properly said in practice that they must work around or evade those 613.  Yet, they cannot comply with all the laws nor even work around them.  They are doomed to failure with no help from God.  As people of The New Covenant, the original and real New Deal, we have only to comply with two laws or rules; To love the Lord with all our hearts and to love our neighbor.  Actually, those two are much harder to fully comply with than avoiding the 613 laws of The Law.  But, we have the key – Jesus Christ.  He came to earth not only to lead us to heaven, from the front; but to be a propitiation for our sins, to make us account as perfect to God to allow us to come into His Land.

T

ELL me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not: break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

This morning’s Gospel comes from the Gospel of Saint John, the Sixth Chapter, beginning at the First Verse.

ESUS went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

The Fourth Sunday in Lent.

The Collect.

RANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that we, who for our evil deeds do worthily deserve to be punished, by the comfort of thy grace may mercifully be relieved; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

S it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one (Romans 3:10)

F

OR all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23)

The Collect

We must have learned long ago in our childhood Bible school there is not anything we must do to go to Hell. Hell is where we are headed the moment we are born into the world. If we simply do nothing, then we shall surely wind up in the fires of Hell. Similarly, there is nothing we can do to earn eternal life – it is a gift of God to those who believe. If you have believed upon the name of Jesus Christ, then you have responded to God’s call as His chosen and elect. Our good works will not keep us from Hell, nor earn for us an entrance into Heaven.  But faith, responding to the Grace of God, will, indeed, gain for us such an entrance to Heaven.

All comfort and all grace is from God. It is never earned, but comes ‘paid on arrival.’ It is, as the Collect avers, a grant and not a wage. Thankfully, we are not paid wages for our wages would result in a loss of grace. For the wages of sin is death; (sin ALL have sinned, I prefer to forgo the wages to which I am entitled, don’t you?)….  but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23) It is so clear and simple, isn’t it? We have all earned our suite in Hell, but God has made a free provision for us in His mansions on High.

This prayer of Collect comes from the Gregorian Sacramentary.

GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that we, who for our evil deeds do worthily deserve to be punished, by the comfort of thy grace may mercifully be relieved Please note the quality that triggers grace – it is MERCY. We have seen many clergy come and go in our church and in others that are within our purview. The single thing that distinguishes a true minister of God from all others, regardless of a parchment attesting by man’s hand that they are ministers, is the single quality of that Compassion and Mercy that was in Christ. It matters not how hard they labor, how long their hours, how accomplished their sermons, or how broad their experience; if they have not the Compassion of Christ for the little children, for the widows and orphans, for their fellow men and women in all walks of life, then they are not true ministers of God. If their concern is more for personal reward than for the additions to the family of God, they are without hope as ministers. Are we judgmental against others? Remember that same judgment will be levied against you.

Being in the midst of the Lenten Season, we may be feeling overwhelmed by the sense of our sinful unworthiness, but bear in mind that even our unworthiness cannot compare with the altogether worthiness of Christ to redeem us. Just as on the mountain two thousand years ago, He is still able to spread a table before us in the wilderness of our sins.

How is it that the Grace of God is a comfort? When we know that it is the Grace of God that has saved us, and not any personal merit we may boast of, then we are comforted in not wondering always if we have done quite enough to earn our salvation. We are comforted as a little child in knowing that, though we have displeased our parents today, their love for us has not diminished. We are as love in our disobedience as we were loved in our times of favor. But the child, like the Christian, must learn through parental discipline, to improve on his incorrigible behaviors under the father’s counsel and discipline. If you are recipient of the grace and call of God, He will not turn you lose for childish misadventures.  Did He not tell us: ….I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Heb 13:5) As far as I know, Christ has never lost any that belonged to Him for as He prayed the night of His betrayal in the Upper Room: While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. (John 17:12) Of course, the son of perdition – Judas Iscariot – was never a follower of Christ, for the Scriptures tell us that he was a devil. (see John 6:70)

I hope we will know with certainty at the conclusion of this devotion we deserve to die for our sins, but Christ Himself died in our stead.  Now we are blessed to have a Heavenly comforter to strengthen us through the feeding of the Bread of Heaven just as that ancient multitude was fed, nourished, and comforted on the mountain slope overlooking the Galilean Waters.  Have you enjoyed that comfort and strength today?

FTER these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. The Sermon

Over the past several years, I have often preached this text, and usually on this 4th Sunday in Lent. The text itself is pregnant with spiritual meaning that is clearly overt and plain to the understanding; however, I want to look at this same passage through a slightly different prism on this special Sunday before Passiontide on next Sunday.

Bearing in mind there is no word in Scripture expressed without great purpose, let us observe the introduction the text itself makes to the mountain-top event which is related in the feeding of 5,000 men and at least a similar number of women and children.

After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.

First

Note a great multitude followed Christ, but HOW did they follow Him? Christ being, at this time, ascended into Heaven, a great multitude still follows Him. But we do not follow across the ethereal expanse of empty space just as the multitudes did not follow Jesus ACROSS the Sea of Galilee. Their fervent determination to follow caused them to follow in whatever route was open to them to follow – AROUND the Sea! Whatever path leads us to Christ is a GOOD path!

Second

Note the REASON that the people followed Him. They followed Jesus for spiritual reasons based upon the miracles that He had performed in their sight. His Miracles are not the great reason we should follow Christ, unless we are referring to the Miracle of Love He has demonstrated in His Redemption of lost sinners. But bear in mind, the reason for their following was spiritual and not carnal.

Third

Observe Christ does not always make it easy to follow Him. It sometimes includes bearing a cross – in fact, it ALWAYS includes bearing a cross. So we should not hesitate to follow Him (not only around the Sea), but also up the Mountain of Bread! Jesus loved to pray and to commune from the Mountain tops because the higher one climbs; the less of the world is there which surrounds us. The world falls sharply away so that when we reach the mountain peak, there is only the sky that surrounds us.

Fourth

Mark the OCCASION of the event. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. In that day, the Passover was, at the time, a Jewish feast that pointed directly to that Lamb of God sacrificed before the foundation of the world, but illustrated in the unblemished lamb sacrificed in long-ago Goshen under whose blood the Children of Israel were Passed Over by the Angel of death that terrible night in old Egypt. 18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you. (1 Peter 1:18-20) It is the point made of the PASSOVER that I wish to emphasize today. That symbolic lamb of the old Passover is now fully realized in the true Lamb of God who was about to miraculously and spiritually feed far more than five thousand people (when women and children are accounted for). The Passover is no longer a mere Jewish feast, but is now consummated in the Lord Jesus Christ who is our Eternal Passover!

This Feeding of the Five Thousand has strong Communion implication for the Christian Church. The mystery of it is in the Bread itself – not the numbers alone!

There are national holidays that are observed in every nation. The most important of national holidays usually center upon the date of founding of the nation (4th of July in America, for example). The 4th of July is not commonly celebrated in Britain, or Germany, or China – but only in America. There is, however, a holiday (Holy Day) that is celebrated more often that annually, and in almost precisely the same manner, in every country in the world in which Christians live and worship. That Holy Day is Holy Communion. Truly, it is the Passover of the Lord to the Church. The crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection of our Lord are the church’s nation foundation day, and we observe that day in a continual spirit of spiritual Presence of the Lord and of remembrance.

And the Passover……was nigh. Were this not important for us to know, it would not have been included in our text for today. The extraordinary symbolism of bread to the very spiritual nature of Christ is emphasized throughout Scripture – sometimes overtly, and sometimes in shadows. The Manna that came down from Heaven to the children in the Wilderness was not simply a spilling over of the bread pans of Israel – it came miraculously and with spiritual meaning. It satisfied their famished spirits and souls. The Bread of Presence in the Tabernacle on the shew Bread Table just before the Most Holy Place symbolized the spiritual Presence of Christ in Tabernacles of flesh to us today. The Bread Crumbs from the Master’s Table for which the Syro-Phoenician woman pleaded with humble and persistent heart symbolized the same. Even bread crumbs are still bread, and just a small measure of that Bread from Heaven was enough for her – and enough as well to feed 5,000 in our text. It is this very point that I believe our Lord is making here.

The Passover of the Jews had been celebrated for centuries with a boring sense of ceremonial obligation. They had forgotten the great depth of meaning it had for them in Egypt, and would now have for all peoples. We, too, often receive the Holy Communion with dull sense of its meaning and importance to us in sharing in the real Spiritual Presence of our Lord at the Table. What great spiritual power opened the eyes of the Two Men on the Road to Emmaus to the identity of their beloved Lord? He had related to them on the way all of the Old Testament Scriptures that spoke of Him, yet they did not recognize Him. When He took the bread in hand at their table, they still knew Him not; but when He BROKE the BREAD and gave to them, their eyes were opened to His Presence. It should also be true of our eye-scales dropping away at the reception of the elements of Bread and Wine of the Last Supper.

  1. Your attention is invited to consider the manner of the miracle of Bread as Jesus performed it.

When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? Jesus spoke this question rhetorically to fathom the waters of Philip’s faith. He had no intention of ‘buying’ bread, for the Bread of Heaven is not for sale. He knew precisely that He would miraculously feed the people from just a small morsel of fishes and loaves. Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. (Prov 23:23) There seems to be a lot more selling of the truth (of man) than buying the truth of God in today’s churches.

  1. Philip, just as you and I often have done, failed the test of faith. Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. Even if there was a king’s ransomed of gold, no amount of money could have purchased an adequate supply of bread near a seaside mountain. Even all of the bread in the bread shops of Capernaum would not have been sufficient to feed so many.

  1. There is only a tiny grain of faith expressed by the good man, Andrew: One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? Had Andrew not believed that the Lord could somehow make the five barley loaves and two fishes of the boy expand to feed thousands, he doubtless would not have raised the issue. Sometimes, it is only a small grain of faith, as small as a grain of mustard seed that is needed to open the abundant granaries of Heaven. Another point to note in this narrative is that Jesus will use whatever resources of faith and materiel we have available to accomplish mighty works. It does not take much – He could have fed them from thin air had He desired. He also allows even little children to be used in furthering His work.

  1. And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. There is no hungrily standing in line when the Lord feeds us. He makes us to lie down in green pastures. When we are sitting down, we are not taking credit for any of our own works, for it is Christ who works in us and not we ourselves.

  1. Does Jesus not do ALL things well? And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. He gave out no blessings from Heaven without first giving thanks. Can we not, at least, follow His example in this before meals? He allowed the disciples a hand in His work. He allows you and me to be involved as well in His work of the Church. Someone must serve the meals, someone must PREPARE the meals. Someone must preach. Someone must prepare the Lord’s Table. Someone must light the candles. Someone must welcome guests. Someone must go out in the community and seek out the needy, etc. What a privilege that each of us is a perfectly shaped stone to fill a particular void in the Temple of God.

  1. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Waste not, want not! my dear mother used to say to me. The gifts of God are too important to be wasted. Many men live miserable lives because God has called them to exercise a gift of Preaching, and they have refused the call. By the way, like crumbs, the fragments are still Bread. Those who were privileged to serve the bread (much like clergy) were also the ones who were called upon to take up the remnants and to clean the tables. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. At times, we may regard the small churches as simply fragments of God’s church, but they may amount to a far greater treasure of Bread than that with which we began to serve. After all were fed from five loaves and two fishes, observe that twelve basketfuls remained of that pitiful beginning.

  1. It is possible to believe in Christ the WRONG WAY! Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. This is a commendable beginning of faith; however, such faith that is based on signs and wonders alone may get derailed into a great abyss of error. When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone. The people who were fed viewed the miracle as a sign of great power (which it was). But they desired to employ that power to further a carnal, and not a spiritual, agenda.

That Bread of the Mountain was not a common bread, but spiritually created bread. It was a preview of that Bread of Life that was the Incarnate Lord and Bread of Heaven. Just a taste of Jesus can amount to a complete change of life. Like the elements of the Communion, a little goes a long way!

Good morning! I hope you are all doing well. In today’s sermon we will be looking at the unifying message of the Collect, Epistle and Gospel and examine how they share a common message of action as we near the end of Lent, a season of preparation.  Let us start by reading today’s Collect:

The Fourth Sunday in Lent.

The Collect.

G

RANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that we, who for our evil deeds do worthily deserve to be punished, by the comfort of thy grace may mercifully be relieved; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Consider these words from the Collect:

… we, who for our evil deeds do worthily deserve to be punished, by the comfort of thy grace may mercifully be relieved …

In the Collect, as is often to the case we acknowledge to God we have fallen way short of our goals He set for us. We are also acknowledging we deserve to be punished for our failures; by His Grace we are relieved of our well deserved punishment. Jesus laid down His Life so we might be free from eternal damnation.  That we might be accounted as perfect at our final judgment, not that we might be perfect.

In order for us to enter heaven, we have to be accounted as perfect.  Most of us know we are so far away from perfect, it would not seem to be possible.

How then can we get into heaven, if not by our own means?

The answer is simple. God has provided the Way, the one true Way, by sending His Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins so we might have eternal life, and He also sent the Holy Ghost to help guide us.

At that final judgment day, if we stay the course and follow God’s guidance, we can be accounted as perfect through the Grace of God’s Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ, Paul is right on point when he talks about the two sons of Abraham, one of the bond, one of the free.  Before we accepted Christ and the Holy Spirit we were like the son of the bondwoman and enslaved to sin. Once we accepted Christ and the Holy Spirit and have made an effort to transform our lives from our old sinful selves as the son of the bond, to the better selves, we are now sons of the freewoman.

The son of the bondwoman represents not only our state before Christ; but also those who refuse to follow Him.  They are stuck in bondage to their own sinful selves and can never exit that state, except they allow the Holy Ghost into their hearts and redeem themselves. It represents the state of all those who do not have the Holy Ghost within them and us before we let the Holy Ghost into our hearts to regenerate us.

The two are representative of the two covenants with God, the bond under The Law and the free under The New Covenant.

The people of old are The People of The Law.  Six Hundred Thirteen Mosaic Laws each of which they were to follow.  They really did not attempt to follow them, rather to avoid being seen to break them.  A very complex and even more difficult life to live, to comply and uphold those laws and failing. It did not work that well. We still fail miserably at times, but we only have two laws, which we will hear about in a second. They are still hard to follow at times, but impossible to skirt with fancy reasoning.

The importnat thing to remember about the 613 laws is they could not accomplish what Christ accomplished with His Sacrifice and establishing the New Covenant. The Holy Ghost helps us along the journey to this goal, to bring us to eternal life.

The New Covenant is so much less complex than the Old Covenant.  It is much easier to remember the ways of the New than the Old. It is more efficient than the Old Covenant. However, the New Covenant requires that our actions match our claimed belief in Jesus, God and the Holy Spirt.  However, tempting as it may be to discard the Old Testament entirely, we must remember that the Old Covenant had a purpose. The Old Covenant had to come first to get people’s hearts ready to follow the New Covenant.  For the New Covenant could not be introduced, or in other words, Jesus could not come to Earth until the people were ready for His Teachings. The Old Covenant was a stepping stone to the New Covenant.

Remember this from Holy Communion:

Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith:

T

HOU shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Under the New Covenant, we have only two laws with which we must comply.  But, there is a catch.  We are not to just avoid breaking those two laws, we must actually live them in our hearts, souls, minds AND bodies.  We must actualize them. It is the common theme of Action not just Diction, that appears in sermons past here. The only way in which we can follow these two laws is we have to put them into practice in our day to day lives, which requires Action and not just Diction. The New Covenant is not about following the Law perfectly, but it is about living the spirit of the Law to the best of our abilities.

This requires we act based on what we can and should do, not what we want to do.  What we want to do will not get us the results that acting from following God’s word will.  The results may or not be obvious right away, but they will be soon enough. A hard principle to follow; but in the end, it is the easiest way and worth the struggle to trust God instead of worrying and or doing what we want to do.

What we want to do is very rarely if ever in congruence with God’s Word. We have to realize this and shift our behaviors to be in line with God’s Word and Will.  We must recognize what we want to do will not benefit us as well in the long run as what God wants us to do.  This is very hard, but it can be done with the help of the Holy Ghost. We just have to let Him into our hearts and provide us that guidance. Once we receive that guidance than we should act upon that guidance.  In John 6:30 Jesus tells us, For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.  If Jesus strives to do His Father’s Will, how much more should we do so?

Action will always benefit our spiritual state compared to inaction. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are compelled to act upon our faith. Perhaps not what we want right at the time, but certainly what we need then and in the eternal future.  In the middle of nowhere, two thousand years from the nearest McDonalds, the disciples looked to Jesus to fill the needs of their congregation.  Jesus took what they had and gave them what they needed; for he himself knew what he would do.  He acted to help them.  Do ye likewise:

ACT

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail; the easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Be of God – Live of God – Act of God

Fourth Sunday in Lent

Revealing the Glory of the Lord

11 March 2024

Psalm 18:1-20 • Ezekiel 39:21-29 • 2 Corinthians  3:12-18

The Fourth Sunday in Lent.

The Collect.

G

RANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that we, who for our evil deeds do worthily deserve to be punished, by the comfort of thy grace may mercifully be relieved; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

And due to the rubric, the Collect for the Day is followed by the Collect for Ash Wednesday, which is found on Page 124:

The first day of Lent, commonly called
Ash Wednesday.

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ This Collect is to be said every day in Lent, after the Collect appointed for the day, until Palm Sunday.

The overriding theme of today’s scripture readings is revealing the Glory of the Lord.  When we reflect on the psalter or the first and second lesson we hear again and again the glory and power of the Lord revealed.

I

WILL love thee, O LORD, my strength.

2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

Whether this is being revealed to the ancient Hebrew or to the more modern early Christian, this revelation is in three phases; past, present, and the future.

Interestingly enough, the three tenses are used in the last lesson from second Corinthians.  St. Paul points back to Moses as the past that is no longer an excuse to not know Jesus Christ.  In the early portion of Chapter 3, Paul makes reference to the glory that is fading, that from the time of Moses.  Then he takes that idea and brings it into the present by pointing out the reality of the hope he and the early disciples had in the now resurrected

Christ, the true Messiah, the one who was promised from the Fall in the Garden of Eden.

14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.

15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart

He points out that when the old covenant is read, those who are still in that mind set and spiritual sense have a veil covering their understanding and most especially their heart.  It has not been removed because as Paul writes only in Christ is it taken away.

16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.

17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

The veil that Moses wore to keep the Israelites from danger and fear is the foreshadowing of what would come in the way of them when Christ was revealed.

But as the curtain (veil) in the temple was ripped in two when Christ died on the cross, so too was that veil, the veil of misunderstanding also removed.

If you think of the times Moses met God Almighty, he had to hide his eyes, he had to cover himself to avoid being destroyed by the shear Holiness of God, the pure and Sinless One, then think to just before Christ begins his last couple of weeks of ministry.    On the Mount of Transfiguration, Christ is revealed to the few disciples to be truly God.  The brightness of His face is the same as with Moses, but instead of hiding that behind a veil, he can be fully seen, because he stands before our Father, as our mediator and advocate, keeping us from sure destruction, because of our sins.  Wow, what a difference from Moses, a holy man and prophet, and yet just a man. Here stand Jesus, as a man and yet pure and sinless, he can withstand the ultimate Holiness of God and protect us from being destroyed, and in fact be our once and for all Savior from sin and death.

Paul returns to the theme of Christ as the solution to confusion, misunderstanding, lack of clarity, inability to see where we are going, which of course without Christ is to death and darkness.  Then Paul gives us the good news; whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.  Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Then to drive the point home, Paul writes of the continuing process; …and we who with unveiled faces all reflect the lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

We need to understand that this ‘unveiled’ face is what the world sees.  It is by our daily walk with our Lord that we reveal to the world what it is like to be a growing Christian.  That my friends is an awesome responsibility.   We are so easily knocked off the path, we are so easily distracted from doing or saying or living the Christ like way, that we at times can become a stumbling block to non-believers.    Oh that the Lord would give us strength to live our lives in his way, to always seek him for comfort and support.  We need to always keep Christ central to our lives, to avoid the appearance of evil, to avoid living like the world, to daily take up his cross and follow him.

We must remember, ….to whom much is given, much is required.      We have a great and important task, we must live for Christ as if this is the last day we will be here on earth.  We must live our lives, through Christ who strengthen us, to the best of our abilities.

Let us pray:

A

LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who declares your glory and shows forth your handiwork in the heavens and in the earth; Deliver us, we beseech thee, in our several callings, from the service of mammon, that we may do the work which thou gave us to do, in truth, in beauty, and in righteousness, with singleness of heart as thy servants, and to the benefit of our fellow men; for the sake of him who came amongst us as one that served, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.    Amen

O

LORD Jesus Christ, who dost give power to such as will receive Thee, that they may become the sons of God; Draw unto Thyself all those who are desirous to come to Thy light; make the way plain for them, that they may no longer be entangled by any worldly cares, so as to be kept out of the way of salvation. Enable them to realize the privileges of Thy Holy Church, and the blessedness of our adoption into the fellowship of Thy Holy Spirit. Deliver them from all false and unworthy conceptions of Thy service; and grant that they may give themselves to bring others with them to serve Thee’ in spirit and in truth, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and ever. Amen.

T

HE LORD bless us, and keep us. The LORD make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The LORD lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and evermore.  Amen.

T

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore.    Amen.

John 6:1-14

This Is That Prophet

Fourth Sunday in Lent, 2024, AD

What is the measure of greatness? Is it wealth? Power?  Influence? Fame?  Who is great among the people of earth?  Socrates?  George Washington? Jonas Salk? I know many people whose names are not studied in history books, but were or are, in my opinion, far greater than the kings and queens and presidents and philanthropists and philosophers of world renown.

To me, greatness is measured by influence for good in the world.  If that is true, the second greatest person who ever lived was born a slave in Africa, raised in the palace as the grandson of the king, and lived in the wilderness herding sheep.  He wrote books which have shaped the values of most of the people in the world from his time to this very moment.  People on every continent, in high places, and low, know his story, even if they don’t believe he was a real person. Even many who reject his words know of them, and most can even quote some of them.  The man, of course, is Moses.  I want to read some of the words he wrote.  They are not his words.  They are God’s words.  God spoke them to Moses, but Moses was the reporter, and he recorded them in one of his books. As I read them, you will immediately recognise their direct relationship to the words we read a few minutes ago in the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel.  They are: I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and I will put My words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.  Those are the words of God to Moses in Deuteronomy 18:18.  They foretell the coming of a prophet who will come from God and speak the word of God to humanity  Now ponder these words from John 1:21, when the Pharisees came to John the Baptist and asked him, Art thou that prophet?  Now, with these two verses in your mind, read John 6:14, which is the last verse in our Second Lesson on page 132 of the Prayer Book, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.  Jesus of Nazareth, who has just openly fed five thousand men, plus women and children, with the five crackers and two sardines of a small boy’s lunch, is that prophet. He is the One God told Moses He would raise up, the prophet that should come into the world.

One of the major intentions of the miracles of Jesus was to reveal Jesus Christ as that prophet.  Did His miracles show His great love? Yes.  Were they expressions of His will to alleviate human suffering? Yes.  Were they demonstrations of the Divine power that was within Him?  Yes.  They were all of that, but most of all they were revelations of Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, that prophet God promised so long ago, that should come into the world.

When God told Moses about that prophet, He said he will be like unto thee. He will be like Moses.  Moses was a great man.  I believe he is the second greatest person to ever live on this planet, but, isn’t it saying too much to say he was like Jesus?  In answer, let us be clear that God was not saying Moses was the equal of Jesus.  No man, not even Moses, is the equal of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the greatest Person to ever walk on planet earth.  We are all, in fact, so far below Jesus in every matter, that to look upon His glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth without some kind of shield, like His human body, would be too much for our physical bodies to endure, and would crush the life out of us in an instant.  He is so far above us we are unworthy to even speak His name.  So God is not equating Christ and Moses.  He is saying  Moses has some similarities to that prophet.

Jesus and Moses were both born into humble circumstances.

Moses was born a slave and the son of slaves.  Jesus was born in an animal shed to an unwed woman and a carpenter who was not His father.  Both Joseph and Mary were of royal heritage, but were, themselves working class people.  Moses later became a shepherd, almost a hired hand, in a foreign land, and Jesus worked as a carpenter until the age of thirty.

Both lived in glory before taking up their respective callings.

By the providence of God,  Moses was raised in the palace.  As grandson of  the Pharaoh, he had every advantage of privilege, status, education, and material wealth. Jesus, before His incarnation, that is, before He came to earth as a Man, dwelt in Heaven in the fullest possible communion with God the Father and God the Spirit.  He, Himself is the word of God, who was with God and who was God.  We could spend years looking into that great and mysterious truth, and we will have eternity to enjoy seeing it more and more fully, though never being able to fully grasp its meaning.  For now all we can do is accept that Jesus and the Father are one; that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are three Persons, and, at the same time, are always in the past, present, and future, One God.  The point I am trying to make is that Jesus Christ had, and abode in, the unspeakable glory of God, before He came to earth.

Both were deliverers of their people.

Through Moses, God delivered the Hebrew people from their slavery in Egypt.  This was accomplished with a mighty hand and many wonderful miracles of God.  Through Jesus Christ, God delivers His people from their slavery to sin, and the prison of eternal hell.  We were slaves to our own lusts.  We were under bondage to Satan.  We were under Divine condemnation for our sins.  We were unable to free ourselves.  Only God could free us.  So, God became a Man, a strong man, and entered the kingdom and castle of Satan, as we saw in last Sunday’s Gospel reading.  He subdued the devil and opened the dungeons that held us, and set us free.

Both were lawgivers.

We all know how God spoke to Moses and gave His commandments to Israel through him.  We all know the story of how God engraved the Ten Commandments into tablets of stone, which He carved out of the mountain, and gave to Israel through Moses.  We have all read of God’s laws given in Leviticus Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Likewise, we all remember the words of Christ recorded in John 1:17, the law was given by Moses.

Jesus, also, gave the law of God.  The same Bible that says the law was given by Moses also quotes Jesus saying a new commandment I give unto you and if ye love me, keep my commandments.  What is the difference between a law of God and a commandment of God?  There is no difference.

Both gave their lives for their people.

Moses gave his life to Israel.  I do not mean he died to save Israel. I do not mean Moses’ death overlooking the Promised Land in Dt. 34:5, was somehow dying for Israel.  Moses death was due to his sin at Meribah. When I say Moses gave his life to Israel, I mean he devoted his life to the service of Israel.  I refer to his life of self sacrifice for the benefit of the people of Israel. Moses carried a heavy burden most of his life.  He stood between Israel and God.  He interceded and prayed for Israel when the people sinned.  He lived in constant labour to teach them the ways of God and beseech them, a wayward and rebellious people, to love and obey God, and receive the fulness of His blessings.  At 120 years of age, his eye was not dimmed or his natural force abated (Dt. 34:7), but the years had not been easy.  Yet, he remained far more faithful than the vast majority of the people on earth.  In that sense, he gave his life to Israel.

Unlike Moses, Jesus had no sin.

He was conceived in righteousness, and He lived in righteousness to the very end.  He was righteous in Heaven before He came to earth, righteous in life while on earth, and continues in complete righteousness now and forever.  Goodness and truth are His very nature.  Therefore, Jesus’ death on the cross was not due to any fault, sin, or lack of complete moral perfection in Him.  His death was due to our sin.

We don’t like to admit it, but we are all sinners, for sin is any lack of complete righteousness, either in our actions and thoughts, or in our beings.  In other words, any failure to be as good as God, is sin.  That is why every time we read about people in the Bible getting a glimpse of the perfection of God, they are immediately overcome by the knowledge of their own sinfulness.  The light of God’s perfection reveals the darkness of our flaws.

Nor are we able to change our sinfulness or atone for the sins we have done.  In other words, by our sins we are unfit to be in the presence of God, and we are unable make ourselves fit.  If we are going to become fit, it is going to have to be through something done for us by God.  He did this for us by dying on the cross.  He had no sins of His own.  He had no need to suffer punishment or justice for He did not break the holy laws of God as we do.  To rescue us from the punishment we deserve, Jesus took it for us.  He, who had no sin, took our sins for us, in order to give His righteous to us.  Taking our sin upon Himself, he suffered our punishment on the cross.  He suffered the pain we deserve, and died the death we should have died.  That is the meaning of the world’s favourite Bible verse, John 3:16:

God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not persist, but have everlasting life.

Another way to think of this is; Jesus purchased the right to go to Heaven for us, and He gives that right to those who accept it by faith. In this case, faith means trusting Jesus’s crucifixion to pay the penalty of our sin, and accepting a full pardon from God as His free gift.

Let us return now to the words of John 6:14, this is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.  Jesus Christ is that Prophet like Moses, who was to come.  He is like Moses, and yet, He is greater than Moses, the way a builder is greater than his house;  or, more accurately, the way God is greater than a man, or even all humanity.  In a way, Moses is a symbol of Jesus.  What Moses was and did are examples of what Jesus is and does for us, but Jesus does it all perfectly, and on the Divine scale.  Moses led his people to the Promised Land.  Jesus leads His people to Heaven.

God bless you.  Amen.

Rev Bryan Dabney of Saint John’s Sunday Sermon

We are fortunate to have Bryan’s Sunday Sermon.  If you want people to come to The Truth, you have to speak the truth, espouse the truth and live the truth.    This is really a good piece and I commend it to your careful reading.

Fourth Sunday in Lent

In today’s Epistle, Paul asks the churches in Galatia: Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?  (Galatians 4:21). They had been tempted by the Judaizers to accept the bondage of the law of Moses rather than the completed work of Christ who satisfied the requirements of the law for us. What the Galatian Christians did not seem to understand was that our Lord’s sacrifice on Calvary’s cross released them from an obligatory observance of the law as a matter of religion and called them to true obedience to its moral principles in the name of Jesus Christ.

God supplied the law to show the children of Israel the cost of sin and what they had to do to be rid of it, but only in a temporary manner. Notice they were to make offerings and sacrifices of all sorts. There was the tithe of crops, as well as the use of unblemished animals for offerings and sacrifices to cover sin. But none of those things, if followed to the letter, would cleanse them completely and permanently of their sins and trespasses, and so they had to perform them again and again, year after year (Hebrews 10:1-18).

It should be abundantly clear that all of those things had a godly purpose which they were to take to heart. They were expected to give thanks and praise to God as he had promised to assist them in meeting their duties. (Deuteronomy 28:1- 14) Who would provide the increase in their herds and flocks? Who would provide them with a bountiful increase of the land? Who would water their fields and vineyards with needed rainfall? Who would give them children as an inheritance? Who would protect them from their enemies? Was it not God himself who would do all those things and more? Still, all of those blessings were conditioned on the children of Israel’s obedience, for if they did not obey his word and commandments, he would bring upon them many times more judgments and punishments than blessings. (Deuteronomy 28:15-68)

Now consider the blessings which the Israelites received both before and after the presentation of the law. Were they not called of God to be his people chosen for his purpose? Were they not witnesses to the terrible plagues that fell upon the Egyptians but did not come near their homes? Did they not see the forces of Pharaoh destroyed in the Red Sea? Did they not receive from God the Commandments on tables of stone? Did they not have access to God via their worship in the tabernacle and later the Great Temple in Jerusalem? Did God not send them his messages of truth through his holy prophets so that they would seek the coming of the Messiah who would redeem mankind from sin and death? Yes, in all these things they were shown firsthand the reality of God and his powers. One would think that on account of such displays of the LORD’s majesty they would desire to know him better and seek his will for them. But this they did not do. What they did, over time, was to institutionalize what God had given them in the law to the exclusion of God’s promise of the Messiah who would save them from their sins. Instead of looking for his coming, they came to regard the things which they had received as sufficient in and of themselves, rather than simply the shadows of things yet to come. (Hebrews 10:1-3)

Needless to say, they rejected the Lord of Glory in favor of their faulty understanding of God’s word written. Saul of Tarsus was a perfect example of a man who was filled with religious zeal. He sought to round up and persecute all who were part of the sect of Jesus never once questioning his motives until our Lord called him out on the road to Damascus— Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? (Acts 9:4) For it was there that Saul of Tarsus realized once and for all that he had been working against God and only afterwards did he acknowledge his error and was baptized. At that moment, the man known as Saul of Tarsus died and the apostle Paul was born of the Holy Ghost. In time, he came to understand what God had intended in his law and that it was not the creation of a system whose end was itself and whose adherents were locked in a cycle of repetition from one year to the next without end. The Bible tells us God has determined an end to all things and his Christ is that person who will bring it all to a close.

So then what is the purpose of the law? It shows us where we have come up short in our relationship with God. It requires sacrifice. It requires obedience. It kills. It does not save. It was never meant to. When one looks at God’s purpose for the law of Moses, it points us to him who can save us from the burdens of sin. How did Jesus Christ accomplish this? He did so via his death on the cross. He died so that we might live. He came to fulfil the law, not destroy or take away from it. He satisfied the particulars of the law for all who would believe and accept him has their Saviour.

Returning to Galatians 4:22-31, we are told that, Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. We are told that this is an allegory which explains the two covenants: one from the mount of Sinai, which gendereth to bondage which is Agar. For this is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. The new covenant is of grace versus the old covenant which is the law. The apostle reminded his readers grace is superior to the law for as he explains in Galatians 3:19-24, Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

The Galatians had in their ignorance accepted a false understanding of the law.  Paul brought them back into a proper biblical understanding of what God intended for them to know. So, with that in mind, let us avoid those who claim to know the truth all the while peddling doctrines which fall short of the saving grace of Christ. Remember to keep the law in a proper perspective. It is a guide. It is a director. It points us to him who can save us from its penalties. If we truly understand the nature of original sin, then we will see the law as God desires us to see it— judgment, justice, and condemnation. Once we see ourselves by its light, we then are made fit to see the light of Christ shining out to us, calling us to embrace him and be received of him. He is ready with arms wide open to receive every penitent sinner. He will not turn any away who truly have confessed their sins to the Father in the name of Christ. Therefore, come to our Lord Jesus Christ today and let his love and forgiveness wash you clean from all your sins which the law has revealed unto you.

Let us pray,

O

MOST loving God, grant that we may see ourselves and our misdeeds as you see them, and that in so doing give us humble and contrite hearts to confess the same before thy throne and receive the pardon which thy Son shed his blood to provide for us; and this we ask in that name which is above every name, even thy Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Have a blessed week,

People in our Prayers – http://faithfulcenturionprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Why? Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God’s work.

The Prayer Team of the Anglican Orthodox Church was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Anglican Orthodox Church to be prayed for?

No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Jack – jack@faithfulcenturion.org or Dru – dru@ faithfulcenturion.org, or call the office at (619) 659-3608 or fill out a prayer card at your church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Hap in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is our happy duty to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the prayer team. Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Hap will know to pray for them.

Prayer List Notice If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  Wed like to update our prayers to reflect the need and most important to give thanks!

Corona Virus

Alan Ridenour’s father was hospitalized on a ventilator with Covid.  After almost two months in the hospital, he has recovered to the point he has been released to home.  Please join the family in a prayer of thanksgiving and for a full recovery.

Laurie, daughter of Jim and Mary Lou Flanagan has post-Covid lung damage, dizziness, falling, blacking out and loss of time relation. Please pray that they find a cure for these problems for Laurie.

Bill Hall is still having difficulty breathing and with his ability to move about.

Columbiq

I am writing to request your prayers for Colombia, my country. At this moment frightful things are happening, a great diabolical shadow is cast over this nation.

  1. The Constitutional Court in a tyrannical way has decriminalized the crime of abortion in Colombia, even up to six months. This is an illegitimate process, the court is legislating, something that is not within the competence of the judges, on the other hand the issue of abortion was a cause judged in 2006, which is why it should not be judged again in 2022. But socialist groups, international elites, social engineers and feminist groups have not given up on the issue. They want to traffic in death.

  1. The candidate of the extreme left Gustavo Petro is close to become the president of Colombia, this is a man who in his youth was a guerrilla criminal, a vile and despicable man who has always served the interests of drug trafficking, he was an advisor to Chavez who implanted Communism in Venezuela, his second home is Communist Cuba.

  1. The same court approved the movement of Gustavo Petro called: la Colombia Humana, it gave him the status of a political party, with this, he has the possibility of getting to introduce at least 15 congressmen, basically he is close to kidnapping all the powers, he already has the judicial power in his pocket, he only lacks the executive and the legislative. We are close to the precipice, we trust in a miracle of God.

We hope you support us with your prayers, I will ask the brothers to pray unceasingly so that in his mercy we will be saved from these perverse men. God bless you and keep you in all things.

Your servant in Christ,

Bishop José Antonio Rios

For Our Country

Our country has lost its way.  Over half the people that vote, voted for a government that promises them things it cannot deliver in return for their souls which it can, will and does take.  Our foreign policy backs the rise of Islam, we turn our backs on those who would follow God and arm those who murder them.  Pray God will raise up a leader from among the people who can turn the country’s course 180° and attempt to come back to God.  Pray the people will recognize that they are headed down a smooth wide road into the pit, a road that will get smoother and smoother, steeper and steeper until the only possible way is down.  Down, into the depths of the pit.  Pray people will recognize there is:

  • One True and Triune God who is goodness in and of Himself;
  • All religions are not equal;
  • All ways of life are not equal;
  • The Bible holds the Key to Life;
  • All rights come from God, not the State;
  • Good;
  • Bad;
  • Evil;
  • Right;
  • Wrong;
  • Allah is the Devil;
  • Abortion is no more than sacrifice of children to Baal.

Pray this recognition will not come too late.  Pray we will, each of us, do our duty to God, Country and Family, putting His Honor above all.

Persecuted

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of Separation of Church and State in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

[1] Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells.  While there is no cure for multiple myeloma, the cancer can be managed successfully in many patients for years; the average life expectancy is 4 years. However, some people beat the odds and live 10 to 20 years or more.  The most common cause of death related to multiple myeloma is infection, with pneumonia being the most common fatal infection. Other common causes of death are bleeding (from low platelet counts), complications of bone fractures, kidney failure, and blood clots in the lungs.
